Beat Unwound Future (and all mainstory puzzles, just need to do the car and bird minigame) and... ahgh my heart 💔. That twas as emotional as I was lead to believe.
Anyways, screenshots and comments below cut
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Top half of the screen looks cool and... calm down buddy. There are better ways of dealing with this.
Tumblr media
Yeah, they don't care and I don't care. I've seen villains worse than you be redeemed. Now come on man.
Tumblr media
You however, I will punt into the drywall. Like seriously, not even a slap on the wrist smh. Don't talk about him like that when you're the one responsible for his grief.
I hope Clive shows up again haha. He was cool.

IVE BEEN ENABLED. LETS FUCKING GO. long ass post time
BEWARE SPOILERS FOR AZRAN LEGACY/MIRACLE MASK/UNWOUND FUTURE!!!
FIRST THINGS FIRST: take everything i say with a grain of salt since im definitely foggy on a lot of story parts and am only vaguely aware of what happens during the prequel trilogy. also im bad with words. anywaysssss
I'd say the moment from the moment he got adopted and was separated from his family, he's repressed both his memories and his emotions as his survival tactic. Since he was a kid of around 6(?) being ripped away from his only sources of comfort and stability in his life would seriously tamper with his mental state.
All he would be able to feel at that point would be loss and grief; too much for any child to bear, meaning they'd likely just shut down emotionally to stop feeling the pain that they'd have no reprise from. His survival tactic has just been to forget he'd ever been hurt at all, and he wasn't exactly given many other options at this point in his life.
After that point though, nothing in his life further down the line has actually been better for him ever since he started repressing his emotions. Following the loss of both Randall and Claire, he's just further sunk himself in his emotional repression because he never learned better coping mechanisms (I don't believe we actually see him cry for either Randall, and I believe he's only cried for Claire at the end of UF). Repressing grief after grief on top of his own childhood.
Due to how much emotion we actually see him express in Unwound Future, that may have been him reaching his limit with how much he was able to repress, with several DECADES worth of emotions coming to the surface due to the game as a result of the personal stakes in the plot.
Hershel is a man who's obviously severely emotionally constipated, repressing everything he feels to appear very subdued (his anger is only slanted eyes and gritted teeth; happiness only a small smile or "haha"; sadness is slanted eyes again, even his crying at the end of UF was clearly him holding back I think).
Claire's death and how society perceives "gentlemanliness" - or sociably acceptable emotions for an upstanding member of society - likely just made this all worse for him. On top of unconsciously trying to protect himself, he's now also trying to play the part of a "true gentleman" since it's what he believes Claire sees him as or wants him to be.
He's such a broken character trying to put on a proper visage, and no one even sees it (or if they do, they're not bothering to help). It's pretty sad honestly.

wait okay so… do any characters i personally enjoy actually die in APP
Tumblr media
Well… this can go in numerous ways. When I think of the characters (I believe) you enjoy, for the most part I can say no. However, if I can recall correctly, you like Claire a bit and which it becomes a slippery slope. Here’s why that is.
(UNWOUND FUTURE SPOILERS)
APP follows a lot of the canon that both A Hat in Time and Professor Layton follow. This would mean that… the incident happens. You know how it is. However, when the time machine explosion does happen, Claire’s body and soul get ripped apart from each other. Claire’s body gets transported to the future, while her soul winds up in The Land Between Time, and later on, The Moon World (AHIT’s setting). In present’s time, she’s a spirit essentially, often being mistaken for being dead because both herself and others believe she really is dead (as she currently has no correlation to her body still being alive). So during this decade it’s a mix between both? Although most of her time during the AU she’s present as her spirit self.
Otherwise no, Emmy and… Tiffany, don’t die. 🙂

The Hoosiers' Trick To Life album gives me so much Professor Layton vibes it's insane. I'm bored, so I'm just gonna tell you what the songs from the album remind me of.
(Full of spoilers for most of the games btw)
Worried about Ray
This song makes me think about Unwound Future. To me, it's a song about how Luke is worried about the Professor because of how he keeps loosing his cool whenever he sees Claire. I also think the lyrics, "They say the future's out to get you, You know that I won't let you fall" fits kinda well with the themes of the game as well.
Worst Case Scenario
Again, this song reminds me of Unwound Future. I imagine the song's talking about Clive and Dimitri and how they dealt with all the losses in their life. The lyrics, "But being healthy's only for the wealthy" refers to Bill Hawks and how he always seems to get what he wants.
Run Rabbit Run
I think this gives me Descole vibes. Sort of like how some people, like Randall, saw him as someone who could help them with their problems. Little did they know, he was deceiving them for his own gain. If they had any hope of redemption, they would have to run from him while they could.
Goodbye Mr A
Mr A in this song is Mr Ascot. He knew too much about the Azran and his quest for more knowledge lead him to his supposed demise.
A Sadness Runs Through Him
This song reminds me of all the villains in the series. They were in pain, and as a result they all "Looked in the wrong place for redemption". They all could have been properly redeemed if they had tried hard enough. (Also, please look at this animatic that kirbro made with this song. It's so well made and deserves recognition!)
Clinging On for Life
This is about Desmond and how he had lost all the people he had ever loved. He is reaching out to Layton and asking him to teach him how to love again, because he is sure he has lost the ability to do so.
Cops and Robbers
Not much I wanna say about this. This is just a really fun song that reminds me a lot of Mystery Room.
Everything Goes Dark
This song reminds me of the Phoenix Wright crossover. The people of Labyrinthia do not know that underneath all the danger that they believe they are in, there is an even more sinister and deceptive plot going on.
Killer
This gives me Diane from Mystery Room vibes.
The Trick to life
"The trick to life is not to get too attached to it". Desmond believes that if he forms an attachment to someone else, they would be cruelly ripped away from him. This is why he closes himself off from everyone.
Money to be made
The people of Labyrinthia living their fake lives while believing the Storyteller would solve all their problems and keep them safe.
Rules
This kinda matches the theme of Unwound Future where not every story has a happy ending and not everyone gets their comeuppance. It's something all the characters just have to live with.
And that's it! Hope you liked these interpretations!

Laytontober day 13
Loss
(Promps here)
Characters: Layton
Warnings: some mentions of violence, injuries. Unwound future spoilers.
He opened his eyes slowly, to see a white ceiling.
He was not in his home.
His now lonely home.
The pain made him remember everything.
He had being researching, trying to learn what happened.
 The explosion.
The funeral.
The suspicious lack of answers.
It was no accident, he knew.
Despite causing him more pain, Hershel sat on the bed a little too fast, and moved his hand quickly to his head, no matter he knew nothing could be there.
He looked around and spotted, next to the bed, his top hat.
The view brought him a estrange mix of feelings.
So many memories about the person who gave him the present, about the circumstances, about the accident.
But it was no accident. He repeated once more, at least he would remember it, no matter what the newspapers said.
Someone didn't want him to investigate; now he remembered, again, the treats from those men just before they hit him and left him on the ground, unconscious.
 Who brought me here?
A lot of get well soon notes were next to the precious gift. He would see them later, however, but it made him wonder for how long he had been unconscious.
And it made him feel guilty, knowing how much people he worried when putting himself in danger.
"Mr. Layton, you are awake." Hershel heard a voice; a tone a little surprised, a little relieved, and turned around, to see a nurse. She called someone, and a few moments later a doctor entered to examine him, asking him some questions while making sure his pupils where working fine. It seems they beat him badly, and blacking out after being hit, was, of course, not a good thing.
Hershel hear his mother's voice on the other side of the door, but a nurse told her to wait a little.
Hershel felt defeated as he answered the woman, wondering how worth would it be to tell the police about the attack.
He wanted to know what happened to her. He wanted to know why he lost her.
He wanted to know who was responsible.
He watched the hat again, feeling he should be wearing it, as he promised, and thinking it was fortunate it wasn't damaged during the attack.
Why? He needed to know why.
But this time he ended in the hospital.
What would happen the next time?
Great part of his research has been thrown away; someone broke into his office once.
He owed her to learn what happened.
 Claire.
He had to know. He couldn’t help to remember Randall too, whose body was never found.
Both events were not similar, but he couldn’t help to feel something similar.
Losing someone again.
The doctor was already leaving, and his mother would enter, begin him to stop for his safety.
Part of the pain he was experimenting was no physical; he attempted to soothe it by pressing his hand close to his heart, uselessly.
The absence was still playing with him, it was so slow, by now he shouldn't be expecting to see her next to him in the morning. How long had it been?
But right now he had no more tears, and that bothered him, feeling the lack of them only made that sensation of emptiness stronger, he thought the tears would take part of the burden with them.
There was something he wished he could rip out of him, but he didn’t know what. There was something he felt missing, but he wasn’t completely sure about what it was either.
Perhaps it was just too much to process.
His mother finally entered, followed by his father. Their faces reflected relief and happiness. Only when they got closer they showed some worry, and Hershel was conscious of how the bruises covered part of his face, he recalled now the doctor told him he was lucky no bones were broken.
He wanted to take the hat and wear it again, hoping it would calm him, if only a little.
He wished so badly the emptiness would disappear.

Back to thinking about Claire and Clive and their traumas born from the same tragedy yet entirely different
You ever think about the fact that Clive's parents were (almost) never directly mentioned ? Layton mentioned them for the backstory talk and that's all, objective "they are dead" statement. And the other time we heard about them was in the flashback. In both of these cases, they're only evoked to announce their death, nothing else. We never get to hear about them in present tense, Clive himself never speaks about them. They're just... Gone. They won't come back, not thanks to revenge, not as ghosts, not even in discussions. They're dead and they'll stay dead.
On the other hand, Claire is very much alive- or at least she looks like it. Even before we get to the Claire reveal, every character keeps her memory alive. Dimitri is doing this all for Claire, Layton is a living tribute to her, Don Paolo's character is linked to her choices. She's everywhere and haunting the narrative before we ever learn that she is literally haunting the narrative. She's corporeal enough to change things yet her time is up, so really how much change can she bring ? She is stuck in this transitory state where she doesn't get to live yet can't die and disappear either. Even if she were to die once and for all, most of our characters would still have her as a driving force. She is forced to influence this story far beyond her death.
I wonder how they got along. Clive for whom death is absence, it is forgotten family and empty homes, and Claire for whom death is life persisting, loud with memories and transcending feelings.
#I think Clive fucking hated her. Yet felt close to her at the same time#He initially bonded with her as in 'she died too' but then when she actually came back he got jealous and furious#Why does she get to come back. Why her and not my parents ? Were my parents not loved enough ?#Were they not special enough is that it ? I'm sorry they didn't get a tragic enough backstory. So sorry they were collateral damage.#He resents her and she's upset too. Claire isn't furious at others like him but she's bitter that she still got her life stolen.#She's as disgusted as Clive. You wanted your parents kid ? I wanted MY kids. I wanted my fiance. I wanted my life#Of course there's something infinitely valuable and beautiful about Claire's loved ones keeping her memory alive#But there is also something deeply human and heartbreaking about it. She should have lived. She wanted to. Why is that not enough#Claire and Clive are similar in that way I think. They reek of certainty brutally ripped apart and broken pieces that won't fit anymore#Their relationship is made of intense resentment and bitterness. But it only hides the grief and loneliness killing them both#clive dove#claire foley#professor layton and the unwound future#professor layton and the lost future#unwound future spoilers#lost future spoilers#my stuff#my analysis#Time duo#Honestly I went for these two but every single character's way to deal with grief is so interesting.#I love Clive's 'My parents are dead and they're gone forever and I don't get why I should have to accept this' but they're all amazing
