An Shiraishi and her feelings
So, the Singing in Sync event was how An realised she didn't view Kohane as her equal so she got too protective of her and tried to shield her from mistakes which ended up disrupting their dynamics early on, but what if those feelings weren't An thinking she was more superior than Kohane, but her starting to realise that Kohane had a lot more hidden potential than she originally thought? Which resulted her in being afraid that she'll get left behind and be alone again once Kohane truly blossoms, so to prevent that from happening she subconsciously started stepping in to "help" Kohane and stop her from learning and thus growing and progressing in her skills? Yet she and everyone else mistakenly thought it was An not truly thinking of Kohane as her partner as no one knew at that time that An has anxiety and insecurity issues as she was always so confident especially in her singing.
In that sense An's anxiety and feelings of insecurity had actually appeared way before Bout for Beside You and mainly stemmed from An's environment growing up in Vivid Street and Nagi, both of which were explained in further detail in Vivid Old Tale. All her life, An has been praised and noticed for simply being Ken's daughter and all of them compared An to Nagi, which made An want to become even more like Nagi since it made people happy (and that's what she wanted right?). To the point that An actively tries to imitate Nagi to the best of her abilities ― her mannerisms, personality, and singing style ― which ultimately led her to where she is now, struggling to find her own sound because she had forgotten that she wasn't Nagi, and that means that her singing style would be different from hers. An's feelings of frustration, helplessness, everything, are what will truly make her stand out because her experiences are what makes her so unique, and to fully utilize that potential she has to sing with those feelings, like she did in Resonant Town (which Shiho picked up on). Hopefully Whip the Wimp Girl will show An finally embracing her own singing style and breaking away from Nagi's shadow, because thats the only way she can surpass rad weekend in my opinion.
As for An's and Kohane's relationship, it's actually still quite unstable although they have been partners for about a year already. They haven't seemed to form complete trust between them, which makes sense since they didn't get much of a chance to work together as a pair before forming VBS unlike Akito and Touya. Considering An thinks that her entire identity is 'being Nagi', she would definitely feel like it was being ripped from her after Kick it Up a Notch when Kohane was almost good enough to reach Nagi's level. If she wasn't Nagi, then who was she? An feeling lost and as if she didn't belong in VBS (since RADder had Nagi, Ken and Taiga which she thinks of as Kohane, Touya and Akito) is a given. An definitely doesn't want to feel jealous of and inferior to Kohane, and is probably guilty that she feels that way at all, since they were supposed to be partners and not rivals. Facing it head on may be the only way An will realise that Kohane wasn't going to leave her just because of that and start forming that unbreakable bond of trust between them.

Noroi: The Curse [ノロイ] (2005)
Tumblr media
Horror can sometimes be an experiment in sociology: what frightens a particular target audience? How can a filmmaker or storyteller prey on the social anxieties of a group? But sometimes, a horror movie almost sheds more insight into the mindset of the filmmaker themselves than it does on the effect they were trying to have on their viewer. Does Koji Shiraishi trust his audience to actually be paying attention to his movie? Apparently not, because anything remotely spooky gets treated like some kind of NFL instant replay after a coach has appealed the referee’s call. Wait, was that a spooky kid in the background? Shit, guess I’d better rewind, slow it way down, and zoom in on the part of the frame in question. Fuck! I guess that’s creepy as hell! At best, this just draws a groan, a sort of “yep, I got it already” sort of reaction. At worst… well, the final shot of the film decides to recall maybe the most goofily awful effects image of the entire movie, so what a way to end things. It’s tempting to dunk on all of the rhapsodic reviews from the Reddit type mindset who seem to think this is some sort of under appreciated classic of mindfuck horror, but that would be as easy as freeze-framing on something from three scenes ago that the audience might not have caught if it hadn’t been obvious enough the first time around. The film squanders everything that it sets up for itself in its promising early sequences. The inherent chaotic exploitation of Japanese reality TV shows is captured in a way which makes it clear nothing good will come of this: a little girl is exploited and reveals creepy details during a psychic contest, and a troubled medium attacks a cohost in an interview show gone wrong. Mix in the disruption of ancient ritual by modernization in the form of a dam project, and boy have you got a stew going, baby! But as the runtime drags ever on, the narrative strategy shifts from using its strengths—pseudodocumentarian fragments of a greater story to be pieced together by the viewer, horrifying in its gaps—to caving to the subgenre’s weaknesses—cheap shaky-cam exploitation and incoherence for the sake of incoherence. But at least it’s finally getting the 1080p BluRay treatment by Arrow that something which is mostly deep-fried VHS-rip type footage that this sort of film deserves.
I do wish I had more insight into the Shinto elements and influences that are abundant in the fascinating folk-horror which makes the backbone for a disappointing ultimate delivery. Talk of kami and oni litters the more spiritually focused conversations, drawing a pall around whatever the fuck was going on in this community before the dam ushered it to a watery grave, and practices have a way of persisting, as evidenced by the tight-lipped new settlement with all of their dogs. Knots are rendered horrific and severed, and unique rituals bring untold horrors. An interesting backdrop. More of this.

basically a server I used to be in did a collaborative unit swap thing for April Fools but I still like what I came up with so I want to. rework the three I did into full on oc units. two of them need new names because they only make sense with who was in that unit but anyway. here they are as a current reference (with planned outfits) (last one is in reblog due to image limit rip)
Dreamy_Harmonics (name remains the same)
USED TO BE - Shizuku Hinomori (leader), Ichika Hoshino, Kohane Azusawa
STARTING VOCALOIDS - Miku, KAITO
The Miya Girls' unofficial karaoke club turned online cover group - Dreamy_Harmonics formed after an incorrect rumor gave one girl a second chance at her dreams, as well as giving two others a chance to pursue their own.
When Shizuku Hinomori quit Cheerful*Days, she held onto her love for singing. So much so that she organises her own karaoke club in school, if only so she can continue to sing. It drags in First Year Ichika Hoshino, who attends the first meeting out of curiosity only to be met with her old friend's older sister. Desperate to hold onto what little she has left of those times, she becomes a regular and sometimes even brings her guitar along. The pair are eventually joined by Kohane Azusawa, another First Year who wants to find something she can be passionate about. As the trio sing in the hopes that they will find what they're looking for, they come across Sekai - a dreamy landscape that constantly shifts in structure. Miku and Kaito join in with their singing every now and then. One day, they come to school to find that someone had recorded their singing the previous night and the city is abuzz with the potential return of Shizuku Hinomori. In the end, the karaoke club decide to set up their own channel to post their covers and eventual original songs.
Dreamscape Sekai - This Sekai has no "correct" formation and is very much like a dream to walk through. The starry sky twinkles above them and the clouds they walk on constantly form different shapes and structures. Sometimes it is a concert stage, sometimes a park and play equipment, sometimes there are formations that aren't completely clear - as if the person this represents isn't sure what their dream is. One day a beanpole emerges from below, and traveling down it brings them to a colorful meadow full of song from chirping birds.

Vivid***Stardom (new name - RAINBOW🌈STARBURST)
USED TO BE - Tsukasa Tenma (leader), An Shiraishi, Airi Momoi
STARTING VOCALOIDS - Miku, MEIKO
A future world star, a prodigy of street music and a retired live show star come together to form Vivid *** Stardom - a musical theatre group that aims to let it's three members achieve their dreams.
Tsukasa Tenma aims to be a world star! However to do so he needs a troupe, which isn't so easy now that he's failed his audition at Phoenix Wonderland. His walk back home lands him on Vivid Street, where he witnesses An Shiraishi performaning. Inspired by her determination to perform alone on such a busy street, he begins to put on one man acts, unaware of Vivid Street's live show background. An humors his insistence though, and before long they strike a deal - if Tsukasa's shows incorporate Vivid Street's culture, An will sing for his shows and together they'll put on a performance to outshine Rad Weekend. Despite their passion, something is lacking in their art. A trip to Sekai brings them face to face with Miku and Meiko, who suggest to them that someone with knowledge of comedics may be needed to attract an audience. This someone is Airi Momoi, an ex idol and panel show guest who soon finds herself endeared to the pair's drive. Her wish to be someone who can truly bring hope to others makes her the final member of their little troupe.
Theatre Sekai - This Sekai has a seemingly endless set of stages for any sort of theatrical performance. The main lobby has a snack bar and a ticket booth (both currently run by Meiko, however she says the guy who should be running the ticket booth will be here soon). The workers are a bunch of plushies. The posters show the variety they have to offer, sometimes simple plays, sometimes live music, sometimes idol shows. However most often are the musical theatre productions by Miku and her group. Once the second floor is finally renovated the actors have a place to sit around and relax between shows and acts. Props and costume are littered about the different rooms.

OWN (new name - S.O.L - stands for Somebody's Only Lifeline)
USED TO BE - Mafuyu Asahina (leader/only member)
STARTING VOCALOIDS - Miku
An online solo artist of unknown background whose large following find their music to be dark and unsettling. One day, the artist stops uploading... Only to come back a month later as if nothing happened. But there's a change in their music... It feels slightly warmer.
Mafuyu Asahina wishes to disappear. She finds Sekai on a late night trying to write the next song for OWN. She awakes in a cottage on a snowy mountain surrounded by trees, with Miku waiting for her. She keeps coming back to Sekai every night as a source of comfort as she is still stuck on her current song. Eventually, through connections to her schoolmates and exploring the music around her, Mafuyu finds herself with a renewed passion for music, hoping that with her own work she can save herself and bring comfort to those who have listened to her cries.
Mountain Sekai - Isolated from the rest of the world, a single cottage provides a warning atmosphere to a mountain where the snow is seemingly constant. Trees surround it on every side with a few paths that would supposedly go somewhere. They don't. Eventually one path opens up to the beginnings of a village where the vocaloids begin to reside for the most part. Miku remains in the cottage.
