Holy shit I have so many thoughts

How much they all put into VR-LA deceiving DX-TR just for it to fail???

And VR-LA hitting the self destruct switch on the staff knowing that he wouldn't survive the blast just to take DX-TR down with him??????

If I'd been following this as the episodes came out I'd be so pissed. Hearing THAT and having to wait another two weeks for a conclusion sounds like actual hell.

As of this moment I still haven't finished the last two episodes of Rolling with Difficulty campaign 1. But that changes tonight!

I'm about to listen to those episodes back to back, and maybe I'll post some thoughts while I'm in it, idk.

Shangri-la Frontier is a fun adventurous and lowstake since it's literally about people playing a VR game. So WHY is my brain trying to twist this fun little show into a fucking nightmare. Let me explain

Any time Utopia is brought up my brain immediately thinks, oh this game company is trying to take over the world and brain wash everyone with VR. Utopia is after all, after world domination.

Show brings up how NPCs are ran by AI, my brain rejects that and thinks, no utopia has captured real life people and uses them as NPCs to help give the feel of real conversation happening.

I have no actual reasoning behind these thoughts and I was pretty horrified after I had them as well. Anyways I am fucking spiraling hard for absolutely no reason. I wish my brain would chilllllllllllll. Let me enjoy a show that doesn't absolutely rip my heart of my chest, please I'm fucking begging.

Rowan's ripped shirt: A classic Captain Kirk thing, the guy would always get into fist fights with various aliens and rip his uniform to shreds in the process. And I found it very fitting since a certain model has the tendency to get naked in front of the camera. 😜

Rowan's weapon: This is a Klingon Bat'leth! I used the one we have at home for reference. 😅

Alan's communicator: Since Alan kept pretending to hold something to his ear to speak to Rory, I settled on Lt. Uhura's iconic ear piece!

The uniforms: A mix between the Playtech/TechTown polo shirts and the black collar uniforms in Star Trek TOS (the original series with Kirk and Spock)

Adam's "glasses": Instead of dramatically taking off his glasses, he's dramatically taking off Geordi La Forge's visor (Star Trek TNG)

Adam's tricorder: A device for scanning and analysing stuff, in this shape or form often used by Mr. Spock

Ben's helmsman helmet: Cerebro from the X-Men movies

Ben's helm: Since Adam complained there shouldn't be an actual helm on a star ship and it's all controlled by an AI, I decided on VR controlls. 🤣

Reaction: ± [Warning: avoiding SPOILERS much as i can but it still hints at the plot evolution.] The parallels in U with its basically straight rip of the plot and character roles from Beauty and the Beast gave off the impression that this film would be a fun teenager romantic comedy. Even our best guess only got the situation right and not the identity, not until just before the reveal.

What a surprising turn of plot. Much darker and more serious than what i thought it might be purely from seeing millenium parade's music video --which was what brought this film to my attention. Very good though. Definitely a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

Memorable aspect of the movie: + Music. Definitely. Brought me to tears at one point. Definitely the point where they want you to. + Animation. A delightful treat for the eyes, with the differences of animation style from the real world to the VR game. I love this practice in these kind-of isekai (like Shangri-La Frontier, and actual isekai Log Horizon and the like). + Story. Man, that story. 10/10 would recommend.

Don’t read below the keep reading bar if you are trying to avoid rolling with difficulties season three and end of season two spoilers

In the spirit of highest praise, what the hell was this season start? We didn’t even get a party to enjoy before everything hit the fan! (The party at the end of season two doesn’t count. It was months ago.)

Also, it was heart-breaking to find out that Otto wasn’t the tired police chief in charge of four loose cannons. I feel like I should have known that he was actually the Godfather but honestly, I thought he was just the exhausted jerk with a heart of gold. In hindsight, the signs were probably there all along but until the music dropped to new sinister levels, I didn’t pay attention to it. (Part of me hopes that Otto actually is doing what’s best for the Heap but I really don’t buy it. Based on his earlier actions, this whole episode is definitely a power-trip.)

A small part of me (that I knew was wrong) was hoping Otto was going to subvert my expectation. I pictured the mission going surprisingly well and the team coming back to a toddler-proofed ship. Imagine the ship with the special alert tape around all the trap doors so that no one tripped over the door or fell down the hole looney tunes style. Dani’s freakout would have been hilarious but it would be from a place of care at least. Far better than ripping the ship away!

Speaking of, I’m terrified that the ship being taken away is going to cause a rift in the group. I’m really, really hoping that VR-LA doesn’t blame Dani for Otto being an absolute piece of work. Part of me is still (wrongly) hoping that Otto is looking out for the crew somehow but the events of the episode and the music really show how wrong that hope is.

On that note, the music! Holy crap that set the tone so well! I was on the edge of my seat the whole time I was listening to the episode and it set the tone for Otto so much. This was terrifying. The initiative theme (it sounds like the opening theme) normally makes me happy and ready for some ass kicking but the theme that seemed to fill the whole episode (tense moment?) made it just add to the dread.

And then everyone talking at the end of the heist. Just wow. You can really see the alignment/thought process differences in the characters when you step back and think about it. I don’t agree with everything the characters said or what the final decision was but it was believable. Especially Kyana with her big baby eyes watching Daddy, Mommy, and Daddy talking about how things went south.

I’m not sure about the team blindly taking Dani’s lead when it comes to dealing with Otto though. I think Dani’s point about putting their foot down about what they are uncomfortable with is very valid. Yes, the crew wants to support her and would follow her whether she goes. However, as Dani stated, blindly following could get them all killed. I’m not sure they need a leader. (Although it has been mentioned multiple times to the point where I wonder if we are setting up for someone to take the lead. Capitan VR-LA perhaps?) But there needs to be more discussion about decisions that impact the whole group.

For example, I’m glad that Finbar started the motions for them purchasing the ship but I’m starting to really notice his habit of ‘knowing-what’s-best-for-everyone’. I’m sure that VR-LA would have preferred to have been part of that discussion. Dani definitely would have wanted to be. Kyana maybe not as much but she has insights that could have been helpful.

And then we have VR-LA. Sneaky, sneaky VR-LA. I’m terrified that the season is going to set him up to choose his old crew over his new. And I’m even more worried that various events are going to push him to his old crew. In this first episode, we have Finbar making decisions for him. We have Otto taking his ship away. And then we have the Goddess of the Weave who might pull strings to make things more interesting.

And then we also have Dani. Her words about how she’s been taking care of herself longer than everyone else (riffrat, street rat) concern me. However, I don’t see her leaving VR-LA and Kyana unless things go super super south somehow. I’m undecided about her and Finbar. I feel like it’s sorta like an only child dealing with someone who is an older sibling. It’s annoying and uncomfortable. I’m sure they’ll be fine and they’re going to tick each other off a lot in the meantime but I don’t emotionally feel that way. I feel like Finbar and Dani care about each other but it’s not as clear as Dani’s relationship with VR-LA and Kyana.

(I should note, I had flashbacks to Yu Yu Hakusho’s Three King saga and was waiting for someone to throw a punch and storm off.)

Anyways, the Goddess of the Weave seems to like the group so hopefully that’s good. (Although if myths and the Percy Jackson books have taught me anything, gods being interested in you is normally painful and horrible.)

Final thoughts, I’m still super tense and shaking from the episode. So glad that it’s back but it’s going to kill me to wait for the next episodes.

*points* same braincell!!! I honestly think it might have something to do with the whole selfishness thing Red keeps discussing with her character. Like. Kysna’s not a Good Person in the traditional sense all the time, but a complex and morally grey character in an environment that makes her look neutral good most of the time, and this really showcased that. She does what she wants, says what she thinks, and serves what causes she believes in, and in that moment, she truly just…. Doesn’t mind being VR-LA’s iron fist. Nothing she said was pulled out her backside, it was all blunt and honest and utterly terrifying. She told Enoch to fly above the volcano. She used the astral face to manipulate her way into a position of power over him, even if they aren’t on the same page as to what Exactly Suvi IS. She didn’t mind much that plan B was ‘kill Endellion and talk to his ghost,’ unlike Finbar, our Neutral/Chaotic Good Boi. Nothing in her code contradicts what’s happening because her code isn’t fully built on ‘objective universal moral standards’ like a lot of protagonists seem to be and it hits you like a freight train when En asks if she thinks she’s being ‘used as a weapon’ and she just….. straight up says yes. I don’t mind. I was made to be a weapon. I think my friends can wield me pretty well actually. Lovely day to rip a man to bloody shreds at nothing but my best friend’s word.

I am soooo obsessed with season 3 Kyana. Like her little speech to Endellion??? The way her tone was light and plain and so absolutely menacing???? Her complete and utter confidence in her friends. In VR LA. The way she is so ready to beat this man bloody dead.

How fascinating is it that SEGA’s creation Ulala was created and inspired from a barrage of women. Her name was created from Kier’s quote “Ooh La La” from the “Groove Is In The Heart” video. However in Japan they claimed it was U-RARA which basically means Ulala. Due to a lawsuit SEGA were not going to be truthful because they wanted to win at the time. Though Ulala was inspired by many things, the main inspiration was Lady Miss Kier from Deee-Lite. Mineko Okamura is the Japanese VO for Ulala and originally Apollo Smile for the English. Apollo was hired because she was like a live-action Anime girl for the West and when the creators of Ulala saw her, they thought she would be perfect to bring Ulala to life. Cherami Leigh recently took over Apollo’s role when Smile refused to reprise her role due to retirement. Nahoko Wright who was once Janet Jackson’s choreographer is the model and created most of Ulala’s dance moves and Micheal Jackson known as Space Micheal makes a cameo appearance in the game, weirdly Lady Miss Kier did dance moves similar to Ulala decades earlier, including Kier’s unique space style and vintage era fashion sense especially the platform boots and also SEGA had asked Kier for permission to use her image and song to promote the character to which she denied, however they did it anyway. Reason? Under U.S. Copyright Law, a parody can be considered a derivative work protected from copyright infringement claims by the fair use doctrine. Did you know that Lady Miss Kier is Ulala’s singing voice in Samba de Amigo? When you see Ulala take into consideration of the women especially Lady Kier, who inspired her creation. Ulala was reboot in 2020. The VR reboot flopped, due to the gameplay controls. The old game is known for controller support. New character Kell seems to look reminiscent to Lady Miss Kier’s “Groove Is In The Heart” style, especially the hair. J Andriessen of Destructoid and anyone with a brain regards Ulala as a blatant Lady Kier rip-off.

High school Dani is peak “if only she just applied herself”

Also the concept of Dani finding VR-LA and fully thinking she found a dead body before realizing Oh my god this guy’s alive

Rip Finbar on not finishing school on time, but completely accurate and he’s applying to culinary school anyway so hopefully they won’t mind too much.

All of them except for Dani who has a Reputation are thought to have never done anything wrong or illegal in they’re lives. This is wrong but Dani’s the only one who doesn’t care if people think that.

Kyana still has some leftover anxiety about being caught by the creepy death cult but it’s Fine. (Okay that’s not even an au that’s just what happens in canon but still)

None of them aside from Finbar are particularly planning on going to college (maybe VR-LA but he’s got bigger problems to deal with) but after all of them graduate (cause I imagine they’re all in different grades) they’re planning on going on one giant road trip through the states.

Kyana tries every sport at the school and decides she doesn’t want to do any of them because they feel wrong and the death cult was terrible but the training was actually good. All the sports are too structured and she doesn’t feel like she can just move.

Probably takes some martial arts classes outside of school though and everyone’s blown away how this mystery girl showed up with no previous formal training and kicked everyone’s asses. “That’s what happens when you’re raised in a spooky death cult 🤷” no one there thinks she’s serious at first but she’s mentioned it several times now…

I don’t have anything to say about the mostly not dangerous electrical magic shows I just love that idea

So I made a couple posts and a fic of this Rolling with Difficulty High-school AU idea that wormed its way into my mind like a fungus, and I definitely don't think I have the time or energy to make it a whole thing.

But I kinda want to make it a whole thing.

So here are some character headcanons as a compromise

Dani

Adopted by Otto in exchange for working for him in his scrapyard (and occasionally his "scrapyard")

In this AU, I like to imagine her getting her name by seeing an episode of Danny Phantom somehow and seeing one of the ones with Dani Phantom and being like "Oh yeah, that's a role model baby."

Wears clothes with a fire aesthetic, but dyes them all blue. Also dyes her hair blue. Says she doesn't really care but also goes through all the time and effort to dye the roots as soon as they start to show.

Says the car is hers, which is not true because it's still Otto's and also she doesn't have a license.

Carries a multitool around with her everywhere she goes. It's pretty big as is, and she knows how to use each tool in at least three different ways

Anyone who wants to use the shop room at school has to pay tribute to her in the form of soda, hot sauce, or money.

Yes, she does have a fireball tattoo on the inside of her arm. Yes, it is blue.

Barely scraping by in her classes, but only because she refuses to put any effort into them.

VR-LA

One day Dani's fucking around in the woods when she stumbles across an unconscious guy in a barely functioning car on some dirt road in the middle of nowhere.

So of course she's like

She drags Virla (not that she knows his name yet) into the passenger seat and drives the car (poorly) back to the scrapyard.

Otto says he'll keep the car but not the kid. Dani says "Ok, bet." and sneaks Virla back into the house every day for a month before Otto gives up and says fine, he can stay, but he has to work too.

Still doesn't have pretty much any memory, just his name and vague flashes now and then.

Really good at sleight of hand magic, but also tech and circuitry and that kind of stuff. He combines the two to make fascinating (and rarely ever dangerous I swear) electrical magic shows.

Trained dove named Bing

Also he has a prosthetic leg. When Dani found him he had one that was barely holding together, so she whipped him up a new one on principle alone. It has two secret compartments and a battery for his shows.

Acing all his classes while barely trying

Finbar

The tallest guy in school, teachers included.

Has a giant family. Like ten brothers and sisters, with his parents and siblings in the most chaotic house in the state.

The gang goes over to eat and hang out because it's the best food in (insert preferred range of measurement here). Dani still thinks she hasn't met them because whenever she goes she gets blackout hammered and forgets the whole thing.

Joins Dani and Virla in their jobs because it makes it a lot easier for him to stop by a grocery store and grab meal prep in the car.

Can and will lift Dani and carry her away when she's being too much of a little shit.

Everyone in school either has a story or has a friend who has a story of dating him and the gossip has hit self-sustaining critical mass

Despite this, his only relationship that seems to be provably happening is the on-again-off-again with Elyse.

Had to retake his senior year two or three times, but is managing to get through his classes now thanks to previous experience, and the teachers liking him.

Kyana

Also adopted, but by an apocalypse death-cult in Wisconsin

Trained from a young age to be a "soldier" when the "new world" comes around.

Gets one wiff of the fact that there's an outside world beyond the bunker she lives in and goes "I'm outta here."

Runs away, hitchhiking across several state lines before being found by Enok

Enok is like "Oh, a child. I guess she's mine now." One of the other members of his religion he's traveling with is like "I don't think you have to-" "[while already holding Kyana's hand] My daughter now."

Rounds out the PERASPRA crew when they're driving around and see her holding her own against some wolves on the side of the road. Dani tries to help out by shooting a slingshot but misses and almost hits Kyana before she catches it out of the air.

They find out she's starting at their school tomorrow and the friendship is solidified instantly.

Like a mountain goat, can and will climb anything.

Still in those training habits, so the fittest in the school, and barely not as strong as Finbar. Whatever team gets her in gym, the other just gives up.

Once her tragic backstory gets out, one of the biggest mysteries in the school is how she manages to be so sunny and upbeat despite the terrible stuff she's been through.

Is constantly (in a friendly if unaware of the pushiness way) trying to recommend diet and wellness tips for others

Doing above-average but not fantastic in her classes

Misc

Takes place somewhere in the middle of nowhere, Midwest America

A lot of illegal stuff going on. Dani, Virla, and Kyana's adoptions are all basically moot. Kyana's legal guardian is still technically the doom cult, so she's on the lam from them. Otto's junkyard is legit, but he also runs a separate smuggling business that all four of them participate in on occasion. Finbar's doing the best out of the four of them, but some of those romance rumors include things with teachers. It was after he was 18, but that's still not allowed.
