VR-LA when he regains his memories going like, wow can’t believe I liked him like that. Crazy. Makes a joke about it in front of the new sanctum crew and they’re just like … Are you sure you stopped?? He’s very sure thank you very much, how he feels now is waaaay different to that. He hasn’t stopped at all but it’s just become more personal rather than surface level and he hasn’t clocked the difference

Meanwhile Maxim catching proper feelings as they become better friends and missing the way VR-LA used to be. He thinks maybe VR-LA liked him differently back then. Wonders if he could get that feeling from VR-LA again. But he doesn’t act on it, he’s very happy with how things are now and this friendship is far better and more valuable than the strange tension of the past.

Thinking about professionals but pre canon…

VR-LA crushing on Maxim in that ‘this person is utterly unattainable, but god fucking damnit they’re hot’ way. Like he’s not going to try start something, he is perfectly content with how things are, but he day dreams… occasionally. It’s a nice interruption to his MR-SN related pining. MR-SN is similarly out of his league, but MR-SN is also friendly and open and warm to him in a way that allows him to delude himself into thinking he has a chance. Maxim is a pleasant fantasy, but just that, a fantasy. He doesn’t fret about it like he does MR-SN.

Until slowly, so slowly he doesn’t notice until it’s much too late, Maxim’s demeanour shifts into something almost friendly. He doesn’t smile, but his voice seems warmer, he speaks at greater length and more freely, and the first time he truely and openly compliments VR-LA… oh the poor boy is gone.

Anyway thus far don’t have many thoughts as to Maxim’s feelings, but yeah, lil pre canon VR-LA being an utter gay wreck is lodged in my mind

Maxim seeing VR-LA get very flustered at something, can’t help but be a little amused by it. He’s not feeling any attachment you see, it’s just, entertaining is all. He assumes it’s just a part of VR-LA’s awkwardness in dealing with people, doesn’t think it has anything to do with him specifically, so occasionally he’ll gently prod at the things he knows set VR-LA off. One day he catches himself thinking it cute. Stops for a moment. Stares. Then abruptly turns around and pretends it never ever happened.

He has no feelings on the matter. None at all.

I’m imagining Maxim helping VR-LA take his armour off, and just, it being so incredibly tense. Like there’s just more clothes under there, they’ve done this so many times before, but it feels so vulnerable. The feeling only increases over time. The pauldrons make VR-LA look broader than he is, stronger, and while Maxim knows he’s not weak in the slightest he does seem awfully fragile wearing anything else. He feels guilty for almost craving the sight, like he’s somehow endangering his knight by wanting to see him with no armour or regalia.

A the opposite, Maxim double and triple checking the straps a fit as helps VR-LA into his armour, ensuring nothing could possibly be amiss. One day he complains of a plate digging into his back, Maxim says nothing, but the next morning VR-LA finds him adjusting the straps and his gambeson to fit and cushion better. Maxim isn’t sure why his knight seems so flushed as he helps him into the repaired piece later. It still feels to VR-LA like he’s playing dress up, the imposter syndrome creeping in, but Maxim quietly compliments him once and he forgets about that for the whole day.

Mash together knight/squire and knight/prince to get squire/knight/prince. 

Maxim is a dedicated and professional squire, older and more senior than the others (though for some reason never taking the rank of knight himself) and previously responsible for the training of knights. That is until he gets assigned to a new knight, he will do his duty (of course) but it feels like a significant downgrade in station.

VR-LA is a harried and exhausting Mage Knight, constantly trying to prove himself, often pushing himself past where he should. Close with much of the castle staff including the cook (Finbar) and with a long-standing rivalry with the librarian (Cassamir).

MR-SN is a seemingly well put together prince. Charming, beautiful, intelligent. He loves showmanship and adventure, is constantly begging the king and queen to give him leave to travel the world. Unfortunately he’s too much of an asset to be risked.

Maxim, despite his initial annoyance, grows to admire this clever knight. He appreciates how VR-LA treats him as an equal even though Maxim’s job is to serve him. Despite his best efforts, he finds himself growing attached. There is real feeling behind how he tends to his knight, especially with VR-LA so frequently burnt out and exhausted. He worries about him terribly.

MR-SN enjoys how genuine VR-LA is compared to the other brash yes-men knights, especially his wit and obvious intelligence. He trusts VR-LA to guard him while he sleeps, even when he so often wakes up screaming and panicked from his frequent nightmares. VR-LA’s utter devotion is a tad unnerving and MR-SN has the slight urge to test it.

VR-LA, poor poor VR-LA, is attacked on two fronts. His sweet squire (a dear friend  even if Maxim would never admit it) is always there for him, especially when he is vulnerable. He finds himself falling for the man, with all their late night conversations and the care (however much may be duty not love) Maxim shows him. 

What’s just as bad is the pretty prince who keeps inviting him to share his meals, laughing at his jokes, sponsoring and bolstering his position. VR-LA can’t help but be in awe of him. As well as fascinated by MR-SN’s imagination and how stories seem both to delight and plague his prince.

And hey, maybe the prince also spares as glance at the squire so patiently following his knight around.
