How do you feel about people accusing you that you’ve been “mean” or “harsh” because of your analysis of Rin’s academic intelligence or attention span?

I've gotten like ten of these kind of asks, so I'm going to answer this one since it's newest. There are a few things going on here.

1) I don't know if you intended it this way, anon, but you are allowed to just say that you think I'm mean and harsh. It's okay to have opinions. That doesn't mean all opinions are correct, but it's okay to have them and own that you have them.

Having said that, I haven't seen any accusing. All the direct interactions with my post have been fairly positive even when people disagreed with a point I made. If someone is accusing me of something then it's a post I haven't seen or they've blocked me and if that's the case, more power to them for using tumblr's features like they should ദ്ദി ( ᵔ ᗜ ᵔ )

2) Rin is not intelligent academically. Rin himself says this repeatedly. Most of the people around him point this out. Rin's scores point this out. Rin being that way is a part of his character and an important part of the plot in more than just making him a relatable character. Rin doesn't do things he doesn't see a point in, and Rin also actively avoids studying/learning about a lot of things because he does not like being confronted with being a demon. He starts the manga off with having specific opinions about his own abilities while also ignoring/trying to avoid his own hand in that. (Skipping school, not pursuing friends, letting his temper get the best of him, etc.) He doesn't think he's capable in school so we see him not really pursue that. It isn't until later in the story that we see him put some effort in, and that's usually because his friends are studying and he's with them. We still see him scoring poorly on his other subjects. If they make it out of this war and return to school, I believe we'll start to see some of that change.

3) Rin's attention span being short isn't an insult (nor is his academic intelligence) and something that I feel is a trait of his and a feeling I think the manga backs up. He quickly loses focus on tasks he deems uninteresting and seldom listen through instructions. Outside of cooking at least. He struggles to listen through plans and prefers winging it which is why, at least in the first half of the story, he indulges his wandering attention. If it isn't wandering attention it leans far more towards him just being rude and dismissive, which fits him pre forest camp arc, maybe, but doesn't really fit him post.

Genuine question after reading the mey-rin essay (which I love btw, the way you wrote it? Immaculate): do you think the writing of women in Kuro could improve if they had more focus? Like, with Lizzie i personally did a whole 180° on how I feel about her once her past was more shown during book of Atlantic. Mey-rin I already loved her and after her own "focus" my love for her increased even more, it felt like reading something more real other than just a stereotype or a trope. I feel like they would all be more enjoyable (tho I'm biased because I love them) if they had more time to shine. *pls Yana, Ran Map focus one day, I would love to know more*

hi anon, first of all thank you, i’m glad you liked the essay :))

short answer: yeah, no. focus is not inherently redeeming.

so, we all clear on my take ? good, good. let’s get into a bit more detail. (and into some proper capitalisation)

Now, focus is great and all, but there has to be a reason the new information we get is interesting. In the cases of Lizzy and Mey-Rin, it kind of is the same phenomenon: now that we have more of this background information, it recontextualises aspects of the character we might not have cared for before, and we gain a renewed appreciation for a character we understand better. This works well, and kind of is a requirement, because they both got very rocky starts. We’re turning elements readers have identified as “bad” into parts of a more complex, “justified” whole.

However, I’m going to be very honest here, I think it’s stupid and doesn’t change the fact that the writing of women in Kuro is fucking horrendous.

It’s great for Mey-Rin: it doesn’t necessarily detach itself from previous characterisation and actually strengthens it (hence the feeling of it turning the stereotype more real), and causes no real change in the character. On top of that, the timing is perfect: right before a demonstration of pure loyalty, Yana shoves a big, red “THIS CHARACTER IS THE WAY THEY ARE FOR THIS REASON” sign, which associates the recontextualised elements with a virtue readers will absolutely love. All in all, absolute banger (with a few problems), let’s not write another essay.

But what the fuck was that with Lizzy? Don’t get me wrong here, I love writing about how awful gender is sometimes, but did we really need to do it… like that? In case what I mean isn’t clear, let’s do a quick recap. This very normal child with normal child behaviour (being girly, childish, emotional, and lowkey annoying, in a normal kid way) was very strongly hated (and. well. mocked by the narrative) for those traits, and her turning point is…? Let me check my notes. Ah, yes, the turning point is that Lizzy behaving like a girl is okay not because it just fucking is, but because it’s actually all a lie and deep down she’s a strong warrior who’s just acting like that because she was told to. Obviously you can’t just be both, silly! And yeah there’s more nuance to that, but I’m not writing a Lizzy essay, for a plethora of reasons. What bothers me is that the readers’ enjoyment of the character is dependent on the denial of her previous femininity, and it’s not just an unexpected effect – it’s how it’s written.

(and, sidenote: as a lizzy enjoyer i kind of hate the fandom’s general perception of her? at least with mey-rin it truly improved with time, but with lizzy… people still think of her the exact same way, they just spend a lot of time talking about how much they enjoy the “cooler” parts of her, instead of spending time shitting on the rest of it. anyway, no lizzy essay, i should keep my takes to myself before i end up in trouble!!)

So, based on those two examples: no, focus is not enough to let Yana show that she’s always been capable of writing women.

And as much as I love Ran Mao (which is a lot) I think I will have to deeply sigh at every single aspect of her character if we get more detail. I’ll take it, because I love her, but I will be even more acerbic in my criticisms. Because focus won’t fix her. If you pull a magnifying glass on shit it’s still shit. And the writing of women in Kuro is, in fact, very shitty.

so, anon, i hope my answer is at least interesting? obviously if yana somehow puts her head on straight and starts writing ran mao well i will be here for it but the odds are… not in our favour. as for the other women… well i’d love to see more of lady midford, but that seems unlikely, and i’m always here for more grelle, and her writing is… a complicated issue other people explain way better than i do. so yeah.

she did! it’s actually an aspect of the novel i really appreciate. sooooo here’s the spoilery content. after she starts at sinegard she gets her period and with that some really really painful cramps that basically take her out. however, her exams are just around the corner and she has to pass them with flying colors or the military academy will send her packing (can’t remember how many students are selected, just that at least one of the teachers has to claim you for their subject. otherwise the school will just drop the student like a hot potato). and rin ofc wants to stay at sinegard and she cannot really see how menstruating every month will benefit her in any way when she’s not planning to have children anyway. in a school full of men (she’s one of a handful of girls) and a male-dominated career (military), she see this function of her female body as a disadvantage that will hold her back. so she talks with the medical staff at sinegard and one offers her a concoction that will destroy her womb but leave her period free. and she chooses to drink the medicine and spend a couple of days in utter pain while one of her organs is basically killed off.

some people choose to take this decision as a basis of their moral judgment of rin, especially in connection to info that is later revealed ((under the cut some major spoilers that kinda relate back to this))

we, and rin herself, later learn that, like altan, she’s speerly. with rin infertile snd altan dead by the end of book one, the speerlies as an ethnicity will noe die out for real. rin never regrets her decision though. she wouldn’t have changed it even if she’d known at the time that she was speerly.

some people in the fandom really have an issue with her decision to destroy her uterus to get rid of periods, but in the context of her character and the society she navigates in it makes perfect sense. they take it as her denying her womanhood when it’s simply not about that. there’s A Lot behind her decision to free herself of menstruation (including her plans to stay childless) that people tend to ignore

also, these same people like to take this circumstance to paint rin as uncaring and anti-feminist and selfish and self-absorbed and morally corrupt/bad, when it is clearly super questionable to attach any moral judgment to the choices a woman makes about her own body…….

you try to hold back your smile. really, you do, but you can’t.

“so you like when i hang off you all the time.”

he groans again, turning his face into the couch cushion. “shut up.”

"shut up!" his face is on fire. he can't bring himself to look anywhere near your eyes.

you scoot closer. he tenses.

you lean in gently and press your forehead to his temple.

“i thought i was annoying you.”

his answer is immediate.

“yes.”

but then, after a beat:

“but let me try, too.”

you blink. “try what?”

3. How did your oc discover themself? Did something cause them to question, or did they always know?

rin -> yes and no. I imagine Rin really solidifies her perception of herself as gnc sometime during college. Specifically, I think rin played around with a couple different presentations and landed back on masculinity as her preferred presentation :D additionally!! she does have a couple other gender qualities mixed into her presentation but it's predominantly masc so… as for aromanticism, i don’t think Rin realized she was aromantic till early into college. Prior to college, all the social coding around romance felt… fake? Like she genuinely thought romance was over exaggerated for some reason and it’s not till college that she realized people actually do feel like that. <- it was a mind blowing moment.

fiona -> he’s always kinda knew. to be clear, he hasn’t always acknowledged that his identities were real but he’s always had that fuzzy knowledge <3

5. How did you figure out your oc's identity?

some characters just have a very strong sense of who they are and all it’s up to me is expand on that + find labels that fit (<- think fiona + sawtooth). for those OCs, I don’t do much “figuring” as I do “discovering”

for others (like rin), I do some researching for stuff that vibes with my idea of her. <- there’s a lot more trial and error since my idea of who she is fluctuates a lot.

First Meeting Starters

Artair blinked at hearing the voice, before wheeling around. There was a kid-- well, a kid by his standards, if the rounder edge to her face was an indicator of her age-- standing there, about his height. She was a young girl with brown hair and warm gold eyes. He could immediately see freckles down her nose until they disappeared behind a band-aid, a scar on her cheek and one on her lip.

She looked a little scruffed, with grease in a few places, like maybe she'd been out here in the scrapyard too for a while. If he had to guess she might frequent here, given she looked strong, and recognized it was weird he was here. Maybe she worked around here or something? Or if there was a buddy system rule, she might know he shouldn't be here alone.

He supposed it was weird either way, to see a random guy out here alone at night.

"Uh--" He rubbed at the back of his head, tilting it slightly into his hand to offer her a curious, but sheepish look. Maybe he'd look clueless enough not to come across as bad news. "Am I... not supposed to be?"
