summary: reader deals with the aftermath of saeran’s bad ending 2.

author’s note: hello! this is my first time posting my writing on tumblr. i recently got back into mystic messenger thanks to @cvhenia and fell hopelessly back in love with these pixel arrangements. i’m already thinking of writing a pt.2 for this.

This is Reader’s doing. Isn’t it? At least, that’s what Saeran’s been telling them for the past forty-nine days. Forty-nine days. That's how long he has spent delighting in their misery. It's been fifty-eight days since their arrival to Mint Eye, nearly two months.

“…Ugh. I suppose you’ve earned something to eat, moron.” He sauntered over to the single pedestal table in the middle of their room. Along with the black vase with its assortment of flowers, there was a platter of sandwiches. Two pale pink wingback chairs flanked the table, one with a decorative square pillow. Reader has grown weary of the shade; that same pink occupied their blanket and pillowcases. They bit back any comments about how it sickened them—it made sense that Saeran would change their ivory walls and curtains to pink in order to torment them further.

They were sitting on their knees, on the mattress where they spent most of their days. Reader toyed with the hem of their dress, the same dress Saeran kept them in. Once, they might’ve thought the flower patterns and vine embroidery across the blackness of the smooth fabric was beautiful. Now, the dress was a tragedy.

At least Saeran dressed in the same well-tailored suit that hugged his body. Reader redirected their attention to the rain lashing the windows. They imagined hanging out in it with old friends. A ghost of a smile graced their lips imagining the scene: Yoosung slipping in a puddle and dragging Saeyoung down with him, Jaehee suppressing laughter, Zen’s mocking smirk, and Jumin hiding away under an umbrella.

It's difficult to picture what they're doing right now. Hopefully not locked away in a tower like the Brothers Grimm’s Rapunzel with her long, gold tresses.

They imagined Zen to be the one clad in prince’s attire and chanting: “Reader, Reader, let down your hair!” from below. He'd make a great fairy tale prince. They pictured him beaming at their comparison.

With the rain, Reader’s mind became flooded with thoughts of their kind-hearted Ray. They'd kiss him as rain beat down on the two. Reader regretted not kissing them harder in the secluded garden. Their daydreams went up in smoke with the loud click of Saeran's tongue.

“Are you deaf? Or do you just lack the brain cells to understand me?” Saeran's mouth slid into a lopsided grin.

Reader's eyes roved freely over his figure. He lifted a brow and moved into one of the seats, his movements perfectly feline. Saeran picked up one of the little finger sandwiches off its silver platter and bit into it, chewing slowly. “See? it’s not poisonous.” Not that I'd waste poison on you, he failed to add.

They’ve trusted him before, only to get their gifts ripped from them. Reader didn’t remember when they started thinking of food as a gift … Maybe when it became a rare delicacy. Saeran’s cruelty seemingly knew no bounds. They only wondered when he'd get a partner to spite them. They’ve lost a dangerous amount of weight in their time at mint eye. Reader has started to lose other things, too.

Small things, mostly. Such as autonomy, freedom, access to daily showers, and the RFA. But that doesn’t mean they haven’t lost great things—take afternoon walks and cold lemonade in the summertime for example.

“Ask: ‘Saeran, may I please eat lunch with you?’”

When they went to speak, their tongue felt leaden. Despite this they asked: “Saeran, may I please eat lunch with you?”

Reader’s voice cracked right in the middle of their sentence.

That fiendish smile on his moon-white face grew. “You may, Reader.” He watched as they reluctantly left their spot on the mattress and sat in the other chair.

Saeran’s minty blue eyes filled with amusement. He propped his cheek with a spare hand and his snow-white hair shifted, the frosted pink edges falling over one eye. It was difficult to imagine him with crimson hair and honey-colored eyes like his twin, Saeyoung. They gingerly reached for one of the small sandwiches and picked it up. Seconds later, they wolfed down the entire thing, going in for seconds.

“You’re such a hog.” He made a face. “I’d kill you if you weren’t fun to break.”

“I wish you'd do it. Get it over with.” Their eyes spoke what their lips refused to.

He can pretend to have power all he wants; Reader knows the truth. Saeran is equally weak, if not weaker. He’s under Savior’s control, just like everyone else in Mint Eye. That’s what made it difficult to completely hate him. Reader justified his wrongdoings because of his trauma. Their bodies are bony, skeletal, with hollow cheeks and sunken eyes. The main difference between the two of them was the smell. Saeran smelled like his floral lotions while Reader’s scent consisted of sour breath and sweat.

Saeran saw the flickering embers within their eyes, the remaining fight from their lost inferno. He wanted them to snap and say something without his permission. Reader is only a shell of their former being. They’ve lost nearly all hope of being rescued by the RFA. If Saeran sought further control, he’d need to reevaluate his plan. His harsh words elicited no more tears from the faucet in their eyes.

Did that mean their affection for Ray has gone down the drain so soon? They stopped fighting for him. Saeran expected them to burn brighter. To Reader’s satisfaction, he found himself painfully disappointed in them.

“Dull as dishwater,” he mumbled under his breath.

It's not like they're silent without reason. Saeran commanded them to only say “yes” to him. Yet there isn't anything worth talking about anyway. They lowered their eyelids, watching the sandwiches as if they'd grow legs and crawl off the platter.

“I’ll be back.” Saeran’s bottom lip caught between his teeth on his way out of the room.

They let loose a sigh of relief when the door clicked behind him. Reader placed a hand over their chest in an attempt to calm their thundering heart. They gobbled up the rest of the sandwiches, not sparing a crumb. If they kept this up, Saeran’s ought to get bored of them.

“Now,” Reader moved to the door when he surely left, twisting the knob.

When it didn’t open, they tried opening up the windows. This became something of a daily routine. Reader held a sliver of confidence that he’d forget to lock them in. Everybody makes mistakes. They've made a whopping amount of them. Enough to completely change their life in a number of days.

If only there was a reset button for this.

Even with one, they didn't trust themselves enough to not fall in love with Ray again and do this over again. Love had proven itself to be a destructive force.

“Oh, come on … There must be something.” They chewed on one of their jagged fingernails, contemplating their next decision.

Their attention turned to the vase on the table. Angrily, they scooped it up in their frail arms. Either it's heavier than it looks, or Reader has lost their strength. They walked over the light gray rug that sprawled across the floor and hurled the vase at their window.

Except they missed their shot. The vase slipped from their hands and crushed a foot beneath it. Tears rushed to their eyes from the pain as they let out a screech in response. Reader grabbed their foot and watched as water and flowers poured from the intact vase.

Why hadn't they thought to drink the water? Plant fertilizers are mildly poisonous, but it's better than nothing at all. Burning tears trailed down their cheeks. They took a sharp breath inward and threw themselves on the bed, landing on their back with their legs dangling off the side.

They sniveled as the tears gathered in their ears. Watching the brown chandelier overhead had also become a part of their daily routine. It reminded them of the parties they used to host. Reader interlaced their fingers and settled them on their belly.

Unknowingly, they melted into the void. A dreamless sleep with nothing beyond darkness. They've compared rest like this to death itself. It made death seem … Easy. Easier. Relaxing. Worth it; Saeran couldn't bathe in their sorrow if they were dead.

He never specified when he'd be back. But Reader saw no more of him for the night. Maybe he did show up with dinner for them, only leaving upon the discovery of their rest. No, that wasn't like him.

When their moronic eyes opened, they took in the expanse of their bedroom. Their temples throbbed from another migraine. Sunlight seeped in through the windows, casting a soft glow on the planes of Reader's face. How long had they slept? Was it the next day or a catnap later? Only one thing was for certain—

They were alive.

i prefer ray over saeran but not if hes wearing this because to ellys smelly ass litterbox and back i will burn that ruffled collar if it the last thing i ever do in my life

9; Casual & Deep Story V

why is bro built like a stripper pole??? hes just unnaturally long and its disturbing to a point that i cant not take it into consideration even if this is an outfit ranking

that haircut is not it for you man and get new sunglasses i know why you have them but pick something else theres something off

the outfit is so overwhelmingly basic and void of color and its really a spoiler for how hes blind because he could not have consciously put this together

8; Yoosung

again hes built like a stripper pole but to a much lesser degree

ive always felt uncomfortable looking at yoosung and his big beady eyes. do not get me wrong i love yoosung but i always feel like he knows my sins

those shoes are hideous, get rid of them. get a better haircut because this one does not make me feel any better about him and its so horrenously big that i know his hair is full of secrets

the shirt is fine, i guess, and i like the jacket, i also have nothing to say about the pants. i like the color palette but thats it. i would have ranked it higher if he didnt give me carpal tunnel with a single glance

7; Jumin

i have little to nothing to say about this. its a basic suit

i like the little bit of purple because thats his color and its cool

his legs are oddly skinny and long in comparison to the rest of him tho and its making it to where i want to classify him as built like a stripper pole but its just his legs so i cant

For the Disney day of the event, to kind of take a beloved topic and use it for the various fandoms, I decided to do a little post about the Mystic Messengers and their favourite Disney characters! I hope you lovelies will enjoy!

Jihyun’s mother liked to show him Disney movies in various languages on the rare occasions she got to spend overnights with him. She would always end their evenings with one before bedtime, so V became knowledgeable about at least the classic Disney movies. He always particularly loved Belle from Beauty and the Beast. She loved the Beast for everything he was, even the worst of him, was truly kind while being intelligent and he loved everything about that movie, from the love story to the songs to the art and the villains.

Jumin has watched almost all the Disney films as they came out and has been to the majority of the Disney parks. His father definitely thought that Disney was something of a cultural touchstone, especially among children, and that it would give Jumin something to talk about with other children, such as those born to the Chairman’s business contacts. Because Jumin grew up with them, he finds he has a nostalgic connection with Disney and does keep up with the newer movies. His favourite is a more recent one, but he really enjoys Coco. The music, the colours and art, the storyline, he felt it was all really beautiful. However, as much as he loves the movie and feels for the main character, his favourite character is still from the classic movies, Quasimodo. It was actually the animated Hunchback of Notre Dame that made Jumin want to go and read the classic novel.

Zen loves Disney movies because they’re the perfect mix of music and story. He prefers the movies that have more music in them and can do perfect renditions of all of his favourite Disney songs, especially ‘Go The Distance’ from Hercules. Speaking of Hercules, it’s his second favourite Disney movie. Aladdin just barely tops it out for his most favourite and it’s Aladdin himself who is Zen’s favourite Disney character.

Jaehee has actually gone her whole life without seeing any of the animated Disney films. Any Disney film she has seen is only because it was a film made by someone else that Disney acquired the rights to. Because of this, she does technically have a favourite Disney character, with it being Maria from The Sound of Music.

Yoosung actually is another one who really does enjoy Disney films, even as an adult. He’s watched the majority of the classics, with The Lion King being his favourite. He loves Simba and kind of wished he could be like Simba when he was a kid, but as an adult, his favourite character would have to be Marlin from Finding Nemo. That movie always makes Yoosung tear up every time he watches it.

Saeyoung gets into moods where he’ll want to binge Disney films, just because they’re usually light watches, with happy endings and catchy music, and they don’t take a lot of mental power to watch. He really, really connected to Stitch from Lilo & Stitch for reasons he can’t even rightly explain and it’s his favourite Disney character by far.

Saeran, for the aesthetics and for the story, really does enjoy The Nightmare Before Christmas and Hocus Pocus both. They’re the only Disney movies he really watches with any regularity, as Disney movies aren’t normally really his thing. His favourite character is actually Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas, with Binx from Hocus Pocus being a really close second.

Vanderwood has actually never watched a Disney movie in his life up until he met Saeyoung. It’s Seven who makes Vanderwood sit through them whenever Saeyoung gets in a Disney mood, so his choice of characters is based off the maybe four Disney movies he’s ever seen. I do think Vanderwood really enjoys the more live action Disney movies, and his favourite is Tron Legacy, with Sam Flynn being his favourite Disney hero.

Rika always connected more with the villains in Disney films than the heroes. It’s really hard for her to pick an absolute favourite among them but she’s really fond of both Maleficent and Ursula. She especially loves Ursula’s voice, which she finds really soothing for some reason and she knows all the words to ‘Poor Unfortunate Souls’.

What are your Headcanons for the rfa if they were fairytale characters?

This ask has certainly reawaken my childhood interest in fairytales and mythical creatures! It's always fun to play around with magical au's, so I had a lot of fun pondering over each respective character, and what role would they play in a fairytale setting. Btw, feel free to shoot me another ask if you were referring to actual characters from various fairytales, 'cause I have ideas on that front as well!

Yoosung

Unicorn. Now, this may seem like a very odd choice for him, but there's actually some reasoning behind it! Unicorns are often depicted as skittish creatures, who are actually very fierce at heart. I can't help but compare them to Yoosung in that regard, as he's often viewed as somebody who's a bit of a scaredy cat when, in reality, he is a person with a heart of gold who will fight tooth and nail for something he knows is right. Kind of like unicorns sometimes serve as protectors of nature and its many creatures in need of care. They are also deeply intertwined with healing properties, which fits right in with our boy Yoosung. Do I imagine him as a star-themed unicorn? Yes. Yes, I do.

Zen

Merfolk. Well, that was an easy pick! What could be more fitting for our darling star of the RFA than these beautiful and mystical creatures of the sea? Merfolk often symbolize individuality and independence, and those traits are very prevalent in Zen's life story. Be it through the tale of Ariel rebelling against her controlling father, or the tales of the sirens (which are different from mermaids but are worth mentioning regardless since they're often intertwined with one another) luring those unlucky enough to disturb their home waters to their demise, merfolk are mysterious and freedom-loving creatures. I can imagine Zen struggling to make a life for himself, as every human he meets falls for his beautiful voice and mesmerizing beauty... But, all he wants is to be seen for his skills and passions. There could be a very intriguing love story to be written about a merman Zen falling for a runaway sailor MC!

Jaehee

Faun. While fauns are creatures who are only depicted as men, we can bend the rules a little! This one's more of a biased choice of mine since I have a soft spot for fauns and their gentle nature. Fauns, similarly to satyrs, are half-human half-goat creatures, but they serve a distinctly different role from the aforementioned satyrs. While fauns are known for their occasional mischief, they are a symbol of harmony and balance between human existence and nature, and serve as protectors of the countryside and shepherds. There's something very sweet about imagining Jaehee as a reserved loyal faun slowly learning to accept that gentle loving part of herself and finding her own little community. I want her to create many delicious foods for the village she chooses to make her home and keep everyone's livelihoods safe and happy. (With occasional mischief of course!)

Jumin

Wizard. More specifically, dark magic wizard. It is simply way too fitting for his canonical fascination with the occult for me to overlook! Though, despite his affinity with dark magic, Jumin would use his powers strictly for necessary and good use. I could also see him being one of the most powerful mages in all the land, which is why he's also responsible for keeping the peace between every individual magic user. Could you imagine the damage a powerful witch or wizard could do if there were no regulations put in place? I see him also studying alchemy and potion-making in his free time. He is a responsible and wise wizard who's very in tune with his magic, but his status and power also keep him alienated from the rest of the world. Maybe a certain curious MC could help him with that? And yes, Elizabeth is his familiar.

Saeyoung

Dragon. This is another biased choice of mine because I just know for a fact Saeyoung is a huge nerd for dragons and has a dragon OC he loves with all his heart. To be fair, in some folktales, dragons do play the role of fierce protectors, loyal to those they hold dear and vicious to those who dare lay a hand on their treasure, be it in the form of literal gold or people they swore to defend. Either way, dragons are a force to be reckoned with, and it does describe our lovable but unforgiving redheaded on a pretty good level. Can you imagine? Him having to use his strength for horrible things, if only this meant his precious brother would be protected and happy? A lot of story potential for sure. I'd also like to imagine him having glowing dots on the underside of his wings that form various constellations. A reminder of his true gentler nature beneath all the blazing fire.

Jihyun

Phoenix. What could be more fitting for Jihyun's self-destructive devotion than a creature that literally sets itself on fire, only to be reborn again to repeat that very same cycle again? Not to mention the fact that fire brings a ton of very painful memories for him? He probably sees only the destruction his fire brings, overlooking the true beauty of it. Jihyun spends a lifetime neglecting himself and burning brightly for other people in his life instead of valuing his own tender heart. And, in the end, that's the exact reason why his fire hurt so many, despite his good intentions. But, phoenix's story is not one of loss and despair, it's a story of hope and renewal. I'm sure Jihyun will find his true strength eventually, and once he does, he will come out of the ashes shining brighter than ever before. Not for anyone else's gain but his own.

Rika

Faye. I quite like the idea of Rika being a faye with genuinely good intentions who was met with nothing but fear and loathing just because of who she is. See, fayes are known for their malice and the danger they entail for humans, especially children. It would certainly be hard to convince a bunch of paranoid and scared folks that you mean no harm. And, paradoxically, that's exactly what pushes Rika to eventually become the very same malicious and cruel faye everyone in her village claimed her to be. She abducts those she views as outcasts and brings them to her kingdom - a place where everyone can live in peace and harmony without fearing rejection or hatred. While faye can't lie... However, Rika is known for her extraordinary charisma and her elegant way with words. She can convince anyone to come to her side with one wave of her hand and just a tiny sprinkle of magic.
