One of the reasons I've always loved Dragon Ball relates to how democratic the super powers are.
That sounds weird, given that the one thing non-fans know is "Goku is OP and can blow up planets", but hear me out on two points:
- The majority of superpowers are derived from ki (qi, chi) use, and
- Every living being has ki
Therefore, every human in that Universe has the potential to learn the superpowers.
Yes some abilities are magic-derived and seemingly race-locked, but the fundamentals of flight, defence, super strength and ki blasts are open to everyone.
So many shows have a "chosen one" theme, like Sailor Moon, or "everyone has a different power" like X-Men, or both, like My Hero Academia. And those are great in their own right, but do you know how impactful it was growing up to watch a show that hinted that "with hard work you could do this, too"?
And DB might get criticised for a lack of superpower variety, but I've always considered that a narrative strength. The flagship DB ki blasts like the Kamehameha, Galick Gun and Masenko are fundamentally the same at heart - just differing movement, maybe intent and definitely name. So there's no real big-brained, Pokemon-esque type advantage to using one attack over another necessitating someone being on the team or picking up a move. Instead, the choice of Gohan or Pan in GT to learn and use a Masenko over their Kame School family's Kamehameha says something lovely about their relationship with the move's inventor, Piccolo.
And yet for attacks and techniques that do differ, like the Destructo Disc, Instant Transmission or Solar Flare, the whole team can learn them, and some have filtered around.
There's movement towards people getting their own abilities and forms now - like Gohan Beast, Vegeta's Ultra Ego and Goku's Ultra Instinct, but they're permutations on existing abilities that resonate with the characters' personalities, so it still sits well.
I just really, really love this concept ❤️

I made a list for webtoons, might as well make a list for manga/anime! I wasn't really allowed to watch too much cartoons TV growing up, so for the past few years, I've been "catching up" so to speak on the anime I missed out on aaand also watching newer ones lol Anyhoo, here's what I've seen/read so far (in alphabetical order):
Arte (Hulu) Manga continues
Black Butler (Hulu) ((full disclosure, I wasn't super paying attention when I watched this, so I have to watch it again lol))
Blue Exorcist (Hulu) ((I haven't finished it yet))
Cardcaptor Sakura/Clear Card Arc (Netflix) ((One of my faves as a kid, I had a board game for it, even! It has since been lost to time, though. T_T))
Cells at Work (Netflix) ((Also haven't finished yet lol))
Corpse Princess (Hulu) ((See Black Butler lol))
Dance with Devils (Hulu)
Demon Slayer (Hulu) ((haven't seen a lot yet, please don't come for me, I'm trying lol))
Devil is a Part-Timer! (Hulu)
Diabolik Lovers (Hulu)
Dragonball/DBZ/DBS (Funimation) ((I got Funimation just so I could watch Dragonball, then I figured I might as well get a refresher of DBZ since I hadn't seen it since it was on Toonami, all while my BF and I were watching DBS on Toonami/Adult Swim lol)
Fairy Tail/100 Years Quest (all the seasons were on Hulu, but they took all but 2 down, so I've been watching it on Funimation) I am SO excited to see 100YQ animated! It's been fun to read.
Food Wars! (Hulu)
Fruits Basket (both runs are on Hulu)
Fushigi Yuugi (Hulu) ((I actually don't know if I finished this...after a while I was just waiting for it to be over and it just. wasn't. ending.
Horimiya (Hulu)
Inuyasha/Final Act (Hulu/Netflix has the movies) ((another fave from my childhood))
Itazura na Kiss (Hulu) ((I'm not sure why people like this))
Jujustu Kaisen (Hulu) ((I think I started reading this after I finished watching it, but I've been super busy and forgot lol))
Kaguya-sama: Love is War (Hulu)
Kakuriyo: Bed and Breakfast for Spirits (Funimation)
Kamisama Kiss (Hulu) ((ugh...I love this and it's criminal that the anime didn't finish with the manga))
Kimi ni Todoke (Hulu)
Kono Oto Tomare!: Sounds of Life (Hulu)
Little Witch Academia (Netflix)
Magic-Kyu! Renaissance (Funimation)
Mahoutsukai no Yome [The Ancient Magus' Bride] (Funimation) ((I love this, too, but I had to take a break from the manga because I was getting irritated with the FL and the choices she was making lmao I've been meaning to pick it back up, though, it really is very good!))
Maid Sama! (Hulu)
My Love Story! (Hulu)
Noragami (Hulu) ((made me cry in a way that my BF asked me what was wrong lol))
Ouran High School Host Club (Hulu) ((I'm sorry, I don't get the love for this, but I also haven't been able to read it yet, so maybe I will once I do))
Pokemon [Kanto-beginning of Hoenn] (Hulu) ((I have not kept up with it over the years and the only reason why I know of any of the newer Pokemon is because of PokemonGo and the new Pokemon Snap--which has been really fun so far--lol))
Ranma 1/2 (Hulu)
Rurouni Kenshin (HBO Max) ((I liked this, but I thought the story was super choppy))
Sacrificial Princess and the King of Beasts (manga only for now, but I think I just saw that an anime is coming soon!!) ((this is so beautifully drawn and sooo well written! It made me audibly react sometimes)
Sailor Moon [OG] (Hulu) ((My absolute favorite when I was a kid! My mom even watched it with me lol I wanted to be Sailor Mars sooooo bad I always kept my hair long just like her! I've got her as a keychain right now lol))
Say "I Love You" (Hulu)
School Rumble: 1st-3rd Semesters (Hulu) ((I didn't even watch the last episode. Literally nothing happened and I just felt bad for the guy. I couldn't watch it anymore lol)
Snow White with the Red Hair (Hulu) ((I hope it gets more seasons, but I also hope it gets better animation. I know people worked hard on it, but it does not do the manga justice. It's so beautifully drawn and written, this is for sure one of my favorites!))
Spice ad Wolf (Hulu)
Spy x Family (Hulu) ((It was popping up so much on my tumblr around ep 4 that I had to know what people were talking about and I'm so glad I did!))
Vampire Knight (Hulu) ((Didn't/Couldn't finish it))
Wandering Witch: The Journey of Elaina (Hulu)
Yashahime (Hulu) ((It's not what I was expecting/hoping for, but I've had fun watching it))
Yona of the Dawn (Hulu) ((this NEEDS more seasons, the manga gets SO INTENSE))
You're Lie in April (HBO Max is where I watched it, but I think it's on Hulu, too) ((ugly cried))
Yu Yu Hakusho (Hulu) ((I only saw a few episodes as a kid, but I remember really loving the art style and the voices. It's still one of my faves))
Yu-Gi-Oh! (Hulu) ((I watched this every time it came on Toonami, I had a whole deck that I lost--which I'm still sad about--but I have a new deck and sometimes my BF and I play each other lol))
I've got an excel spreadsheet with these and others that I want to watch, but haven't yet, totaling 126 lmao As of right now (1/2023) I have no desire to watch Attack on Titan, One Piece, or Naruto (again, please don't come for me and PLEASE don't try to convince me), but I welcome any other recommendations and/or discussions/chats about any I listed!

Top 5 anime or manga?
Thats so hard 😫 I don't think I've watched or read that much tbh- I always, always will have big love for the OG DB, like I don't think you can truly appreciate Yamcha and Tien if you never watched it and overall I just think it was really fun and whimsy- certainly not perfect but overall it holds up well 35 years later- With that out of the way
I'm an OG Sailor Moon girl, loved it as a kid, love it now- Genuinely a wonderful show imo.
Cardcaptor Sakura- This show is just so sweet and so happy and so lovely, I dont know how to explain it but it just makes me feel dreamy when I watch it.
Fruits Basket- Again I have inly seen the 2002 adaption all the way through and about 38 eps of the new one but again this is just a really interesting show- darker than you expect but also really lovely.
One Piece- Dude I have watched 700 eps of this so like clearly it's doing something right. Its genuinely just such a fun and enjoyable show with such a huge and entertaining cast.
Erased- This was a miniseries I watched about a guy who would get psychic visions and after his mum is killed he teleports back into his 10 year old selfs body to stop her murder and the murder of his schoolmates. This show isn't perfect by any means, there was a couple iffy things here or there but overall the plot and the concept and the mystery was really enjoyable and I binged it all pretty quick!
Technically I'm cheating with this but you said manga as well so as a final addition Imma say Inuyasha- I just loved the mix of shonen and romance in Inuyasha and Kagome is one of my fave protags ever, she's such a go getter and I love her dearly 🤧

Another big warning for huge paragraphs of texts that I rambled in. But thank you so much for the ask. ❤
9. Favorite anime child
Interesting question! My favorite would have to be Zenko from One Punch Man, off the top of my head. ❤ I really like Child Emperor and Tareo, too. Hm...who else... Oh! Tenga from Mob Psycho!! 💓 There's also Mob of course, Tome, MUSASHI, and all the Body Improvement Club. So many good kids in that series. There's also Gon and Killua. I do love those two.
15. Anime you never get sick of watching
I would have to say One Punch Man, honestly. I never ever get tired of watching it over and over again. It's one of those series that I will see a million times over and I will still laugh so hard and get too excited over scenes and characters, even if I basically memorized the whole series at this point. 😌❤ And I guess I should say Hunter x Hunter? I'll rewatch episodes/scenes with Shoot and Knuckle whenever I have the need to see and hear them again. I do enjoy watching hxh as a whole though. And for nostalgia, I'll go with Pokemon. ❤
16. Ten best animes you have watched
One Punch Man - About a year ago from now, back last November, I found this series at the most perfect time. I actually got into OPM as a senior in high school, but I only watched the first episode and accidentally lost it for years after I graduated, and that was...four years ago? A friend at the time introduced me to it, but I literally just...lost it by accident. It wasn't until I saw this specific panel of Metal Bat in a tumblr post with Kenshiro and other characters (who I will recognize now right off the bat!!) that made me rediscover it! ❤
Which is absolutely crazy to think about now. I cannot believe seeing Badd helped me find my favorite show again after losing it, and now I will keep it in my heart forever. I just love this series too much. Just...so many great things associated with this series makes me love it even more, too. A few big things being that I found my best friend through it, and I have gotten so much better physically and creatively through my art. ❤❤❤ So...a huge thanks to a character I instantly loved without even knowing who he was, and a character I absolutely adore.
Hunter x Hunter - This series was something that...I really did not realize how much I was going to love it. I just took a chance and watched it back in March, and now it is one of the best things I have in my life. It's up there with One Punch Man with how special it is to me. ❤ And of course...it's so special to me because I found someone like Shoot in it, along with so many other good characters. I know I constantly talk about Shoot, but he really does help me everyday, I would never be able to explain properly. I feel like this series as a whole, along with Shoot, were things I didn't know that I needed in my life, and I could not have found them at a more perfect time.
Fist of the North Star - This is actually the first anime I ever watched as an adult, if you don't count Dragon Ball like most people do? But I would have never heard of this series if it wasn't for Joel from Vinesauce. He talked about it so much that I told myself "I have to check this out." Literally loved it to death by the first episode. It got me hooked instantly. This series actually made me incredibly emotional, I just loved Kenshiro so much. If it wasn't for this series, I wouldn't have wanted to get into anything else! This helped me find my way to OPM and JoJo and everything else, especially all of the old stuff. (I just love 80s and 90s anime too much! But that's been a given ever since I was a baby. ❤)
Mob Psycho 100 - After getting into One Punch Man, I for sure wanted to get into Mob Psycho. I knew that I was going to love it before I even thought about watching and reading it, and I did. I absolutely love it. Seriously, what a fantastic series.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - Another series that Joel encouraged me to get into because he talked about it so much. It really got me curious, especially while watching his old streams playing Eyes Of Heaven and the old JoJo RPG, playthroughs which I love a lot but had no idea what was happening back then. (After watching the show I'd rewatch them and just be like !!!!! I love it even more now I understand! LOL) I remember last December just watching Part 1, 2, and the beginning of 3 all from my phone since I was without a computer for months. A very happy memory. Then I spent the beginning of this year watching Part 3 and 4, and I absolutely loved it. The whole series is so fun to watch. It really was an adventure. ❤ I still need to watch Part 5! I just haven't gotten around to it.
Dragon Ball/Dragon Ball Z - (Both of these go in their own spot together!) The Dragon Ball series is really first series I ever fully got into, along with the only anime I've ever watched completely. (A lot of people don't count DB as an actual anime since it's in the same category as Sailor Moon and Pokemon? But anyway) I associate the series with the summer of 2017 because I really wanted to get into it after so many years, and my friend was nice enough to lend me his account to watch it all the way through. Stayed up all day and night the entire summer break from college to watch it, I was so exhausted during that year. It brings back good memories though. 💓
Cowboy Bebop - Bebop holds a special place in my heart because it is just such a good series, but also because of my significant other. Corin absolutely adores Cowboy Bebop. He loves Spike, he loves Steve Blum, and he loves the entire series on its own. I have such good memories of just lounging around at his house and watching it.
One Piece - Even though I have a long way to go until I catch up to nine hundred episodes (!!!) I adore One Piece. 💓 I got attached to the main crew right away, and I love the story! So, so good.
Bleach - Another series I have good memories with because of Corin. We would watch it over at his house whenever I started getting into different anime last year, and just stay up late cuddled up to the tv together with it. I enjoy the series! It makes me think of what I missed out on in the 2000s growing up, but I'm happy I get to watch all of these now as an adult. It's really nice.
Initial D - Okay, the reason I put this on the list is because I absolutely love older anime. But I really do like Initial D a lot. It's something I'll watch on and off whenever I'm sleepy and need something on tv to relax to. It's a lot of fun to watch. I'm pretty sure I've fallen asleep watching episodes before.
(Honorable mentions are Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, City Hunter, and so many more older ones that I really need to finish watching from the beginning.)
#sorry for always rambling when I answer asks! 😌❤ but thank you!!#I've actually fallen asleep to initial d and jojo part 4 whenever I would watch them just because of how relaxing they are#this is a one punch man appreciation blog! ❤❤❤ follow at your own risk cause you're gonna see a lot of it!#and I can never talk about hunter x hunter without commenting about shoot in some way I apologize#askbox#supreme-sauteer#joy

How did you get into fan fiction?
Well, TBH I have been off and on with FanFic for years. Back in the dark ages of the 1990′s I remember writing TERRIBLE Hanson FanFiction (yes you read that right, Hanson, like the three brothers in a band... MMMMBop) Guys I even posted this shit, no you will not get a link. In 1996 we got our first desktop with internet and I instantly became active in what I could find of the Sailor Moon fandom. I dabbled in a few other fandoms, but I was hardcore into the SM fandom. I had given up on writing at that point, but read voraciously whenever I came across something that piqued my interest, especially since this was the dark ages when it would take 5-10 minutes to download a picture offline.
I was super active in high school and got away from fandom culture for a while, but when I got into college I dabbled in several fandoms, reading fics and comics in my spare time. Those fandoms were super toxic, and I gotta admit it put me off of internet fandoms totally. But I kept up with a few comics and lurked through content of pop culture and anime fandoms for years.
Then I had my first kid. I abandoned fandoms totally, mostly because I was busy doing the mom thing and I have kind of an obsessive personality. After a few years, my daughter became intensely interested in anime and I began initiating her in some classic series I enjoyed n my days. At that point my husband was like, “hon, you gotta get her watching Dragon Ball.” Now guys, I didn't watch Dragon Ball much in my youth. I would catch some episodes, not now WTF was going on and the action back in my day was SO SLOW that it didn't hold my interest. I could not wait through a RL three days to see who was gonna win a fight. I knew enough and had caught episodes here and there to know the basics, but it wasn't until the miracle of internet streaming and binging that I was able to actually enjoy Dragon Ball. And because this is something about me, I started at the beginning, like not Z and even when my daughter was not watching, I binged all of dragon ball and then Z within a few months.
Because of my obsessive personality, and past with fandoms, I searched out the fandom. I knew that because the time was so well established and diverse, that it would be easy to find AND the quality would be good. This was in like March/April of this past year and I immediately found TPTH and I believe my first fan artist was @rutbisbe for a smutfest she participated in. I was really nervous because the last time I had read any fan fiction it was a DARK TIME of FF, and so many were terrible. But I ran into @jbae654‘s submission of Selcouth, and gave it a shot. Holy Moly, I was blown away. Since I had not dabble din the DB fandom, I didn't know any of the classic writers, stories or any of the like. SO I read a bunch of her stuff. Then I stalked her Tumblr and found her fanfic list. Since I liked her writing I trusted her taste in other writers. So I began devouring the list and now here we are. I am so grateful that I just happened to land in such a wonderful community, and it has really altered the way I think about how fandoms can and should work.

sailor moon crystal is a shitshow (but you probably already knew that)
incoming rant brought on by the anime matsuri interview because it made one thing perfectly clear: Toei has not learned a goddamned thing.
this post is not concerned with the animation style/quality/whatever. I’ve made my opinions on that quite clear and I am not up for fielding arguments about the merits of the animation. this is strictly about how Toei has been handling one of their flagship franchises. tl;dr:
first, for context, here’s a quick ‘n’ dirty timeline of the series thus far:
series announcement: 7/2012, initially planned for 7/2013 release to coincide with 20th anniversary.
first delay announcement: 4/2013
toei claims they’re still aiming for a 2013 release: 8/2013 (20th anniversary has now come and gone)
jk! now it’s july 2014: 1/2014
dark kingdom: 7/2014-1/2015 (13 episodes)
black moon: 1/2015-7/2015 (13 episodes)
infinity: 4/2016-6/2016 (13 episodes)
1/25/2017 - yes, there will be more crystal
6/30/2017 - and it will be movies
late march 2018 (25th anniversary is later this year) - at a Q&A, editor Osano Fumio (”Osa-P”) and director Chiaki Kon estimate that the movies won’t be coming for another 1 to 2 years.
look at the pacing of the infinity arc. if they had gone at that pace this whole time, we’d have gotten through the end of the series some time in 2016, maybe early 2017 depending on breaks, etc. and still had time to do side stories, like Casablanca Memories or the Chibi-Usa Picture Diaries, that have never gotten a proper animated adaptation. hell, maybe Parallel Sailor Moon could get a short. as of this writing, we’ve gotten 39 episodes in 45 months (roughly 3.75 years). to put that into perspective, they could’ve aired one episode per month and we’d still be in the Dream arc by now. (by the way, if by some chance a Toei exec is reading this, that’s not a suggestion)
for comparison, let’s look at Dragonball, another Toei flagship franchise that got new content right around the same time: just over two years passed between the newest Dragonball films, Battle of Gods and Resurrection F (late March ‘13 and mid-April ‘15). DBSuper went into production in the intervening time and teasers started in June ‘15.
the difference is that Toei is managing DB like they actually give a shit about it. they’ve been appropriately pacing out the PR and hype to keep the fanbase engaged. they haven’t taken erratic breaks in production. the amount of time that went by between the end of infinity, the announcement that a follow-up would be happening, and that the follow-up would be a theatrical release does not suggest that Toei knew what Crystal’s next step was going to be. this isn’t a thought-out plan of action, it’s laying the tracks in front of the train (see above).
how about the Clear Card arc of Cardcaptor Sakura? it was announced in late November 2016 and began airing this January. no several-month schedule slips, no need for a bizarre airing arrangement, no “just buy the blu-ray” excuses. because Madhouse, unlike Toei, is giving one of its most well-known series the care it deserves.
Toei’s management of SMC has been slipshod and frankly baffling from the beginning. (Korra, Steven Universe, and Miraculous Ladybug fans, I know you know at least some of this feeling.) all signs point to Toei not knowing what they want to do with the franchise, much less how they’re going to do it, and not caring enough to either get their shit together in one fell swoop or know when to fold ‘em.
at this rate, I’ll be amazed if Toei finishes Crystal by the time I make enough lawyer money to singlehandedly fund a better remake (or a proper US release of the musicals, which, let’s be honest, are the remakes we actually deserved).
in conclusion:
(gif: nauticalneptune.tumblr - gotta give credit but i’m not tagging b/c i refurse to put my personal salt pile in anyone’s notifications)
#welcome to my salt pile#sailor moon crystal#by the way i don't want to hear a SINGLE 'but think of the poor animators!!!!!!'#working conditions could stand to be a hell of a lot better for animators#but that does NOT excuse the serious lack of leadership and care from higher-level management#who gave them this thing to do and jack shit to work with#it's not their fault that this project has no cohesion or passion#and i would much rather see them work on better projects in better conditions#this post is aimed squarely at toei and their shitty business decisions#toei animation#seriously tho i'll be surprised if they finish before i'm 30

heiroflight413 replied to your post “the redesign is just such an example of "if it ain't broke, don't fix...”
I'm gonna hold out hope for "It looks better animated" like was the case with UI. I'm not sure how, but DBS ended on enough of a hot streak to earn it the benefit of the doubt for something like this
I could get used to it, I guess. If he does something really awesome while he’s wearing that getup, it’d help redeem the redesign.
As it stands, though, it feels like they went too far. They picked Broly because he was so popular, so why tinker around with such a popular character? They’ll have to mess with his backstory no matter what, and I can understand modifying his visual to help distinguish him from 90′s Broly, but overhauling his costume seems counterproductive.
I don’t know, it’d be like bringing back Sailor Moon after a long hiatus, and suddenly she’s wearing a black ninja costume. That might even be pretty cool if they handled it right, but it’s not what people expected from the character.
But you’re right, Ultra Instinct looked really dumb in still images, because Goku with silver hair was the most hokey, fan-arty, Dragon Ball AF-y thing they could have done. It wasn’t until he started doing bullet-time effects and the cool theme music revved up that it became awesome.
#ask duhragonball#to be fair i remember a time when i was skeptical of super saiyan 1#this was back when blonde goku was showing up in the merchandise but i hadn't seen the frieza saga yet#at first i was like 'you look pretty just the way you are goku'#then i saw him wrecking frieza's shit and i was like 'i see why *this* is so popular...'

“Asta, it's true that you aren't going to become the wizard king, not ever. That's because I am going to be the Wizard King. You're wrong about Asta, Revchi, very wrong. Asta's no loser, he's my rival! “
- Yuno, Black Clover (Ep. 01)
The Toonami Trending Rundown for December 2-3, 2017. Asta’s quest to become the Magic Emperor begins as one of the rising stars in the shonen anime and manga scene in Black Clover makes its way to the better cartoon show. Meanwhile, Mr. Satan attempts to get Buu to stop his mass-murder-for-fun ways, and Gon, Killua, and Biscuit work on getting the final card to completing Greed Island among many others.
On Twitter, every show would successfully trend in the US during their respective East Coast airings including Black Clover as it began its run on a good note, while Hunter x Hunter and Cowboy Bebop also trended during their West Coast airings. On tumblr, Toonami would trend as with Dragon Ball Super, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (including JJBA) and Hunter x Hunter.
Unfortunately due to a very busy night in the TV scene combined with the transition of Dragon Ball Super moving to 10:30pm (the prime-time DBS hour at 8pm was abolished to make way for the expansion) the show wouldn’t make it to Nielsen Social’s top 5 this week.
This week’s feature was a game review of Gundam Versus for the PS4. It received a 7.5 out of 10 score.

Some of the notable news of the week include:
For those wondering what Toonami will be doing for the holiday season, the block will once again be doing encore marathons during the Christmas and New Years weekends, with episodes 1-11 of Cowboy Bebop airing on December 23, followed by episodes 32-43 of Dragon Ball Super on December 30. A good time to catch up with all of your favorite shows for those falling behind.
And for those looking for other ways to catch up on or re-watch Dragon Ball Super, the first 39 episodes are available to view on FunimationNow, with plans to upload additional episodes on the service in 13 episode batches, each to launch two weeks after the last episode of the batch airs on Toonami. This goes along with other options including Adult Swim’s on-demand and streaming services as well as the Funimation produced DVDs and Blu-Rays. Of course, premieres will continue to be on the better cartoon show weekly (holidays aside) as always.
Meanwhile, the acclaim keeps on coming for Samurai Jack, as the season finale has received several nominations for the Annie Awards, including Best General Audience Animated Television/Broadcast Production, Outstanding Achievement for Character Design in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production, Outstanding Achievement for Production Design in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production, and Outstanding Achievement for Editorial in an Animated Television / Broadcast Production. The ceremonies will take place on February 3rd and we wish Jack the best of luck.
Toonami has had quite a history of helping many top Shonen shows reach prominence and with Black Clover now on the better cartoon show, there are high hopes for Black Clover to reach similar prominence as well. Considered to be a “spiritual successor” to Naruto by some (or a mix of Harry Potter and Naruto), Asta and Yuno’s quest to the top of the wizard world has had many intrigued, as the Black Clover franchise is growing to become one of Shonen Jump’s newest hits, with over 4.8 million manga copies in print, and since the anime premiered in Japan back in October, the series has seen respectable ratings and streaming numbers on Crunchyroll and FunimationNow, all culminating in Toonami picking up the show for TV broadcast. Not everyone is pleased however, with some critics have complained about the show’s story and tropes being too formulaic and cliched to other hit Shonen Jump shows, among other things, some going as far as calling it one of the worst manga series to be released in 2016.
Yet despite this, Black Clover against all odds, found its way to the better cartoon show, beating out favorites such as My Hero Academia, Mob Psycho 100, and the Blue Exorcist Kyoto Saga to do so. Of course, the last part isn’t exactly true, contrary to semi-popular opinion, Black Clover isn’t here simply because Toonami chose it over the other three, and in a perfect world, those three shows would be airing alongside each other with Black Clover in the block.
Despite that the above mentioned shows were well requested and Toonami has looked into them, internal politics with the distributors and competition can sometimes hurt or stop a show’s chances of making it to the better cartoon show, including legal rights hitting a snag that forbid a TV broadcast (ex. Macross, Megas XLR, IGPX before 2013), negotiations between the distributors fail (ex. when JoJo’s was with Warner Bros, they didn’t negotiate with Toonami unless they paid a fortune for TV rights), or in the case of the above three shows, competitors (ie. Hulu or Netflix) outbidding Toonami for exclusive premiere rights. When asked regarding My Hero Academia’s possibilities a few months ago, Jason DeMarco responded: “I don't know if we'll NEVER get it, but we can't get it right now. A good rule of thumb: if something premieres on Netflix, you probably won't see it on TV any time soon....”. There might be more to it than these reasons, but regardless, as with the situations with Sailor Moon Crystal and previously InuYasha The Final Act and Blue Exorcist season 1, Toonami will have to wait perhaps several years for those deals to expire to get its turn at airing those shows, assuming if there’s still interest by then. With Toonami’s success in helping to rejuvenate the anime industry, other companies have wanted their slice of the anime pie, something we also saw during the block’s previous golden age. It stinks, but as the old saying goes, you can’t win em all.
Meanwhile, while we’re not privy to knowing how Toonami negotiates with the anime industry for shows, with Black Clover’s creators and the Toonami crew seeing the show’s potential and growing fanbase, it’s safe to say that having the show air on Toonami with its prestige was a big priority for them and negotiations turned out to be successful. Say what you want about Shueisha and FUNimation trying to push the show to success, but to use a sports term, they wanted it more and got it done when it mattered most, while you could say My Hero Academia came up short. Remember, if you really want to see a show make it to Toonami, let them and the appropriate distributors know you want to see it there at their request outlets (ex. Toonami’s Facebook and Tumblr message boxes, among other places). Sometimes things may not work out, but with enough demand, at least you’re showing that they should really consider it. It sure worked for Black Clover and every show that has aired here.
Time will tell how Black Clover pans out, but all I can say is if you’re liking what you’re seeing, continue to enjoy this show, perhaps check out the manga as well, and look forward to its future potential. If not, all I can say is to vote with your eyeballs and stop watching and giving it publicity. There’s a reason why Sword Art Online succeeded and likely will return despite vocal minority discontent while One Piece ultimately left Toonami despite all the love it has gotten. If a Season 2 of Black Clover ultimately does happen with a Simuldub on Toonami in the future, it will be because of the support of the fans. If not, the critics will be proven right and we'll move on to the next big thing. Black Clover is a show with plenty of potential ahead, and whether it could become the next Naruto and forms its own legacy or not during these 51 weeks and perhaps beyond, the viewers will be the ones who get to decide that.
Tune in tonight as Hunter x Hunter begins the Chimera Ant arc, among other great moments. Until then, stay gold as always.

September 2019 Goals DONE-
Harry Potter/CrossXovers: Death’s Spiral: Death’s Beginning, Chapters [Challenge, duology] (DS: DB) Chapter 1
Post Goals:
None, because I’m so far behind it’s terrible.
So, I didn’t get to anything new on my September List, BUT! I’ve had some of Death’s Beginning done for a while, I would have moved it up in the schedule, but I just finalized the story and series names. Death’s Spiral has two parts, Death’s Beginning and Death’s Rebirth. Death’s Beginning is sort or a prequel to Death’s Rebirth, and Death’s Beginning happens exclusively in the Harry Potter World, which is why it has such an odd identifier in the list. The series is an overall crossover, but it starts out with some major character development for Harry.
ALSO! I got eight older chapters done this month!! Two in one day and three in another even!!!!!! They were ficlets, but they’re done! Technically four’s how much I should be doing in a month, although it’s supposed to be 2 ficlets and 2 full length chapters. It’s still more than I’ve done in a month in ages! Progress!! And I’ve got a detail for another chapter too! If I can keep up this progress I might catch up to the schedule in the next couple years.
I’m starting to work on writing everyday right now, so that’s helping. Well, I’m working on stories every day, anyway. Sometimes it’s research, sometimes it’s rearranging the schedule, which I’ve done a lot of now, and sometimes it’s writing. I should probably try to start doing it at the same time every day too, but my schedule is still wonky and changing right now, so I still haven’t gotten to that.

Thoughts on the “Yu Yu Hakusho” English dub. Episode one.
a little while back I watched YYH for the first time and loved it. but on Hulu they only had Japanese as an option. which is fine as this anime had some of my favorite voice actors like Shigeru Chiba, Mayumi Tanaka, Megumi Ogata (who I swear has never played a straight person in her entire career), and Kappei Yamaguchi. when I first mentioned that I was watching the show I said that the English dub was probably not good so I wasn’t upset about Hulu not having it and boy did people tell me otherwise. I had three different people hyping this dub up as an all time great so here we are!
I will not cover ever episode though, that would kill me. I figured what I will do is cover the episodes where we got introduced to our major players and from there just pick and choose any particular episodes I want to talk about. shall we begin?
so they redid the opening song in English. I’m not shocked, that was common years ago with dubs and at least the lyrics mean the same thing. though I don’t like this singer’s voice.
I love how protagonists get introduced. I mean Sailor Moon, your protagonist is late for school. My Hero Academia, your protagonist is standing up to bullies. One Piece, your protagonist is slicing open his face and also like seven. Yu Yu Hakusho, YOUR PROTAGONIST IS DEAD.
did anything ever happen to the man driving the car anyway? he killed a fourteen year old
Kent Williams is our narrator, he was Father in FMAB and also the narrator of that anime too
and I could tell it was him right away because I can’t remember how many times I’ve seen that anime
Yusuke is voiced by Justin Cook who is Kirishima in BNHA and fun fact he’s the cousin of Aaron Dismuke and helped him get into voice acting so thank him for that
“okay this is weird, stupid weird” just wait until you’re a half demon and the explanation for it is convoluted as balls
“today did start out different, I went to school” yes that is weird
you know of all the cute pompadour babies in anime, Yusuke is probably the one who comes closest to being a legit delinquent
Keiko!
“hey nice skirt” you’ve seen her in it before?
so Keiko is being voiced by Laura Bailey who was kid Trunks in DBZ, Shin Chan, Lust in FMA, and Tohru in Fruits Basket. she’s kinda hit or miss with me, I like how she played all the characters I mentioned, but in the case of say Maka in Soul Eater I found her annoying to listen to.
fortunately she voiced Keiko in what’s essentially her natural voice and not her Tohru voice (which she recycles often) so this is fine
“nice uniform, its lacy” in Japanese he comments on her underwear being white, either way don’t do that dude
gotta love how Togashi wrote a romance compared to his wife Naoko’s take on it. Togashi wrote a bad boy/nice girl couple where the boy proposes to her in a manner that just has her all “yeah whatever” and Naoko was all ROSES and GLITTER and BALLROOM DANCING and RULING THE FUCKING PLANET
yes Yusuke is so scary with his bitty pompadour and green pants
“he’s super tough and he kills for fun” lawl
I’m kinda annoyed with how they say Urameshi, its a pet peeve
“you shouldn’t talk, it makes you sound stupid” BURN
Atsuko was a human disaster, no wonder her son is like this
she is voiced by Meredith McCoy who was Android 18 in DBZ
you kick that can Yusuke!
oh God
so I knew Kuwabara was being voiced by Christopher Sabat, but you should have warned me he’s using his Yajirobe voice! who thought that was a good idea?
the kid Yusuke saves sounds too old
*Rose Tyler voice* this is the story of how I died
....why is Botan British?
she’s voiced by Cynthia Cranz who was Chi-Chi in DB and DBZ
why is she British? that’s so random
love this eye catcher
is everyone in the Spirit Realm British? should I expect Koenma to be British too?
“in other words your death was a complete and utter waste!”
its pretty disturbing Yusuke really thought his death would be seen as a blessing
“they probably came over here just because they’re getting extra credit!” do Japanese schools give out extra credit for attending wakes now?
well I shouldn’t be surprised Yusuke had such shitty time at school, his teacher is King Bradley
I had forgotten the child didn’t know or understand Yusuke was dead...
second star to the right and straight on till morning!
not gonna lie I expected myself to ship Yusuke and Botan, but I’m happy they never had romantic subtext all things considered
I keep forgetting this anime showed the previews before the closing, its weird

Besides Sailor Moon what are your thoughts on the other 2 of the 3 big 90s anime (Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon) particularly their American dubs.
Fun fact: Back in the days when DBZ Uncensored was a big thing and I was still in my “Japanese-Sailor-Moon-is-better phase” I once wrote in and told the owner that Sailor Moon was more censored than DBZ. The site owner disagreed. Then Sailor Moon Uncensored became a thing.
With Dragon Ball Z, my thoughts were actually similar to that of the dub of Sailor Moon. I not only loved the dub itself (acting and music), I actually liked most of its inventions and censorship. Being sent to the next dimension was a great euphemism because when people died in DBZ…that’s exactly what happened. There’s also no reason to see a little kid’s genitalia on TV. I also liked the pacing of the recut episodes, especially after seeing the untranslated Japanese version on the International Channel and how it was just…so…stretched…out.
However, now I do accept the less censored DBZ and still like it (although I don’t like some of Funi’s choices for the casting in the Cell arc). I’m still not a fan of DBZ’s Japanese track aside from a few pieces here and there, so Faulconer actually did help me swallow the episodes that followed (especially the work in the Buu arc).
Aside from not being quite as big of a fan of DBZ as I was of Sailor Moon (although it was my definite #2), there are two aspects that make me less rage-filled about the retcons:
1. Funi did go back and redub early DB and DBZ a lot sooner. Had Sailor Moon been redubbed before the license expired in 2004, for instance, there would still be an outcry, but it would have been a lot muted. By 2004, I had resigned myself to the idea that the dub of Sailor Moon would never be seen again and was pretty much out of the fandom.
2. Despite this, Funi did not insist on a word for word translation. Small changes still remained, and some aspects of the old localization still carried forward,
I was never a fan of the Pokemon franchise until Pokemon Go, but I didn’t have any issues with the edits as much as the quality of the edits (if you’re going to draw in a sandwich, make it look congruent with the background). And I can understand why certain aspects were banned. Pokemon is clearly for a very young audience, even younger than Sailor Moon or Dragon Ball Z.However, it is telling that Pokemon, in spite of all the cries about censorship, did not go back and rename all its characters. Heck, except for the die-hards (who are confined to their corners), calling Kuririn “Krillin” or even Mr. Satan “Hercule” might get you at worst some mild derision (although with the Dragon Ball Super dub, “Hercule” has seemingly been retconned away), but no accusations of erasing the character’s identity.
And that is what makes Sailor Moon’s situation unique. With Dragon Ball Z and Pokemon, censorship was argued against on the basis that censorship was wrong in of itself, not that the original work was the best thing ever. While most fans do overlook some of the problems of the original material in those works, some fans will at least address them (and Nintendo actually tried to make changes over the years). With Sailor Moon censorship was argued against on the basis of the censorship was racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. The original material isn’t just accepted as original, but morally superior.
The diehards took over the Sailor Moon fandom by teaming up with the social-justice crowd and got people who generally celebrate the those who are marginalized into fighting for the right to have thin, light-skinned PoC explicitly termed as “pretty” presented as they were originally all for sake of some outdated (even for the 90′s) LGBT stereotypes.

💒🎶✨🍼🎁 for the ask prompt!
Ah, thank you so much for the ask! I apologize for the long rambling paragraphs in advance. 😌❤
💒 - Which show would you want to live in?
This is such a difficult question! Because I do think about if I lived in the One Punch Man universe a lot. Like what if I was a normal, everyday civilian in one of the cities. I feel like that wouldn't be all too great since I would worry too much about the many monster attacks and emergency evacuations. And I know for sure that I couldn't be a hero. I'm not that great physically nor athletically. Which I need to work on in real life. Regardless, OPM has such a thrilling story throughout the webcomic, and with how everything has been going, it would be really interesting being just a normal civilian and figuring out what all the heroes are doing now that the HA is being questioned.
I also think about the Hunter x Hunter universe. Again, I would most likely just be a normal, everyday civilian I feel. The idea of coming up with what type of Nen I would have and how I would use it sounds so fun, but I honestly have no idea at all about it. But...this specific universe during the Chimera Ant Arc? It's absolutely terrifying. I would cry.
Now that I think about it...a lot of my favorite shows are so dangerous, so I should probably say no to living in any of them. But like I said! I'd be interesting to live in the OPM universe. I definitely would despite the danger.
🎶 - Favorite song right now?
Oh my gosh, I've been listening to Chromeo nonstop for months now. Their White Women album is too good. ❤ One song that has really stuck with me is Over Your Shoulder. What a great, body positive song. The song is...very sexy. It makes someone like *me* make me feel incredibly sexy. 💞
✨ - Which fictional character (book, show, or movie) do you relate to most?
Shoot McMahon is a character that I relate to so much. More than any other character. One of the many reasons why I love him so much. I already talk about him way too much, but I relate to him so much personally. We're both inside of this mental cage we locked ourselves in, and it's difficult breaking yourself out of it, even if others encourage you or try to help you. We both hesitate when acting on something. We both get too anxious over things. And we're both quiet and seem so reserved. He's so much like me, it's ridiculous.
But as Gon has helped him break out of his cage, Shoot has helped me to break out of mine. Slowly but surely. ❤
He really does give me strength. He makes me feel like I can be strong just like him. I am incredibly thankful a character like him has come into my life so suddenly. He is someone that I didn't know I needed in my life. Someone that really does make me believe that I can accomplish anything he can. He's just a good character.
🍼 - What is your favorite memory?
I've actually been thinking about whenever I first started getting into anime! I grew up watching Sailor Moon and Pokemon when I was super young, five years old? Four? It was so long ago. I was very late getting into anime, sadly. Many people around me made fun of others for liking it throughout public school, and I was confused about the subject in general. (It's so sad to think about now! I could have connected better with my significant other's friend group back in high school! But I feel like I got into it at just the right time, which was way after I graduated.)
The summer of 2017 was such a great summer break. I finished my second year of college, and I spent my whole summer bingewatching DB and DBZ completely through for the first time. Which I would have never gotten to watch without my friend letting me borrow his account to watch it on. I would stay up day and night just watching episodes in a row. It was a lot of fun. I remember most mornings I would be up at seven or eight, making myself coffee while I was glued to my laptop. I also played Budokai 3 most mornings, which was gifted by that same friend. He was so happy I got into it. I even sent him reaction videos I made with certain scenes. Ahhh, I miss doing that! I still make phone videos on occasion, but I never send them to anyone. It's too embarrassing. I don't have anyone to send them to actually! I have posted the one I made about the OPM S2 announcement because oh my goodness I was quietly squealing over it last winter.
Anyway, it was a nice memory. I finally got into anime, and at the perfect time I feel like. I honestly am happy that's the first series I ever got into since growing up, especially since it helped me branch into different things and meet different people! It also helped me so much creatively and artistically.
🎁 - When is your birthday?
08/02 is my birthday. ❤
#askbox#dreamswillmakeyoucry#joy#oh my goodness I talk way too much...#but these were fun#it's also nice to just tell stories! like...does anyone else associate specific times with things you get fully invested in at the time?#I was going to talk about how I got into opm after accidentally losing it when I graduated high school#especially since this whole year was such a good year because of the series and helping me meet new people and making new art#maybe a story for another time
