The Guess Who: “American Woman” b/w “No Sugar Tonight” Japanese 7″ (1970)
Nothing says U.S. imperialism like Canadian band releasing “American Woman” in twenty-two countries. Right. Was the single an anti-war sentiment or an anti-American female one? Both - until Randy Bachman clarified that it was a Vietnam War protest song. Successfully avoiding the draft at North Dakota’s U.S. / Canada border, they were invited by The White House in Washington, D.C. to perform. Too bad First Lady Pat Nixon saved the administration from embarrassment and asked the band not to play it.
The Lordz Of Brooklyn took multiple guitar riffs and made it the foundation of their best single “Saturday Nite” (’95)
