Hiiiii I see that you and thirstworld collaborate a lot (and I love your work lmao 🤤). Can you explain how you two collaborate? Like, what your process is? Do you share a word doc, take turns writing chapters, something else? Thanks ❤️❤️

Hi nonny!!! Sorry it's taken a while to answer this. I wanted to take some proper time to answer this, since writing with @thirstworldproblemss is my favorite part of the writing process, and I was trying to pin down exactly how we make it work and the honest answer is:

There is no real logic in all honesty, we do everything under the sun.

The collaboration comes in many forms.

Most of the time it's a side product of just how many hours, minutes and seconds of the day we spend talking to each other? This includes DM, Whatsapp, Discord, Tumblr messages (though that has taken the backburner since their messaging function is chaos and I rarely check it), sometimes we call each other when there's a long roadtrip. Sometimes we will be half awake insomniac and half conscious texting each other messages riddled with typos lyksalksdassisdis.

A lot of times before we write, be it a oneshot, a chapter or a headcanon that is never posted, it starts with one of us going:

"Hey you know what would be interesting? if ..." and off to the races we go. A lot of times one of us will throw a scenario of the character we're horny for at the hour, and throw a prompt at the other going: how do you think they'd react.

Our favourite thing is the 101 various AUs we have of every damn character. High School AU of Homecoming where the trio gets together (Frankie is an exchange student?) Royal Historical AU! where Santiago and Boa are betrothed and Frankie is a war captive? What about an angsty Frankie/Santi FWB in high school AU? etc etc etc

Sometimes one of us (most like TWP) will write a whole masterpiece of a fic from beginning to end in the DMs, and it's a matter of copying and pasting into the Gdocs. Sometimes one of us will start something and the other finish. Sometimes we play baton where one of us writes a paragraph then the other takes over.

For Red Flags. It was me holding TWP captive and hostage for over a year. (Much like what I'm doing with EYEM) talking her ear off, and both of us going over the chapter over and over planning in meticulous detail only to throw it out and write something completely different anyhow. (We must've rewritten chapter 6 four times from scratch until both of us were in absolute tears).

The main thing I'd say about our collaboration is that there is a lot of trust between us. Co-writing with someone requires a lot of vulnerability because writing can be something very personal, and if you do not feel close to the person it can throw up a lot of emotions you didn't expect.

We've also known each other for three years now, and talk a ridiculous amount. Often when we plan stories there will be at least a handful of times during the interaction of one night where we both suggest the exact same thing within seconds of each other and then we burst out laughing.

I trust TWP with everything I write, to the point where when she beta/edit, I do not review the changes, there's no tracked changes, because she has full editing permission on my stories, because I know she will be better at knowing what I wanted and intended to write better than I did.

I cannot stress this enough that while TWP might not be listed as a co-writer in everything I write (because she refuses to let me give her the credit she is due), she is an integral part of everything I write because I will consult her, brainstorm with her, she will suggest scenes, pacing, re-organise scenes that do not fit etc, before a story is posted. She is the unseen masterpupeteer of all my writing, and more importantly without her writing would not be as fun as it is for me, and I don't know if I would write as much or as often as I do without her.

Writing can sometimes be an incredibly lonely process and I have been lucky and fortunate enough to have a friend who never makes me feel lonely

I remember watching a John Mulaney and Bill Hader interview where they talked about stage fright and Bill Hader was talking about how to cope with anxiety, whenever he performed on SNL he only looked at John and was performing for John. if John laughed then he did his job. That's very much how I feel when I am writing and posting things here. When I write something TWP is my first and foremost audience I have in mind. So long as she laughs or is horny, then I know I've done my job.

if someone wanted to really understand you, what would they read, watch, and listen to?My body language, me, and whatever I’m talking about. That may seem like a cop-out answer to some, but I really do believe the only way to get to know someone is to observe, talk to, interact with and listen to them. Not necessarily in that order. I come into contact with a lot of different people through my work but also see/read a lot online and it often amazes me how little attention people pay to others! Be that cues (non-verbal or verbal), body language or just downright listening to and hearing what they have to say. No wonder people often don’t understand other people’s actions, points of view or feelings. Can anyone really be surprised or confused by someone if they ignore everything they say/do/emote?So, I like to think you can really get to know me by interacting with me. it seems to have worked for me in life so far.

dog person or cat person?Cat, cat, cat! I’ve grown up with* both, first we had a dog and when she passed away when I was a toddler, we got another one two years later. We got our first cat about two years after that. She had a litter, from which we kept one kitten. Unfortunately both cats died when I was in my early teens. My sister managed to get us another cat by asking one for her birthday (and I was totally in cahoots with her and together we picked a kitten from an ad in a newspaper, behind my mother’s back) and then naturally, I needed my very own cat a year almost two years later. Let me tell you, my mother was not impressed with the tiny orange fluff ball (riddled with flees) my stepfather helped me pick up without her knowing about it. Unfortunately, sister’s cat was killed in a traffic accident a few years later. When I moved to uni, my mother insisted I took my orange cat with me as the cat only liked me (according to her) and, well, it was just mean to leave the cat all alone in my new house... so my housemate agreed to get a kitten! Sadly, both cats passed away about a year and a half, the orange one due to ‘old age’ (she’d had a brain infection a few years ago and recovered remarkably well, but her health wasn’t optimal) and the other one was so affected by it that she refused to eat or drink and died a few days later. It was awful! The house was very quiet and I was terribly upset, so my mother suggested I get another kitty. At first I thought that was a bad idea, but then I reluctantly started looking online and fell in love. The little attention seeker was so affectionate, playful and active that I felt awful leaving her on her own while I went off to work, so a few weeks later I got another kitty. They’re Best Felines Forever (BFFs) and the cutest, sweetest, most affectionate and lovable cats I’ve ever had.Don’t get me wrong, i still like dogs. But... I’ve also discovered I’m actually allergic to dogs ever since moving away from home and not having one around me/in the house. My sister and mother both have a dog and they’re nice, but always need entertaining and they have that typical dog smell I’m not too fond of. I not-so secretly like my sister’s dog better because it’s trained better and actually listens and doesn’t constantly jump into my lap like the hyperactive dog of my mother. Coincidentally, I was also allergic for cats but by having them around 24/7 I’ve built up a tolerance and rarely have reactions. Also, my current two kitties are half ragdolls, a breed which is known to be more tolerable for people with cat allergies.* Over the years we’ve also had birds, fish, hamsters, guinea pigs, mice (it was supposed to be one but of course I bought a pregnant one and got 10!), a rabbit and a turtle. I think my mother tried to make up for the fact that she never got to have pets as a child and instead took her stuffed toy dog out for walks on a leash in the neighborhood.**The dog I grew up with died almost a decade ago.

pick one of your favorite quotes.Honestly, I’ve got nothing… Some of the things I’ve learned over the years through (online) media is that quotes and quoting important people is a thing in the US. It’s not in my country. I’ve never been asked to memorize/apply quotes from famous inventors, authors or other historical figures in school. Granted, I did drop history in the equivalent of 9th grade, but it was never a thing in Literature (of any of the languages) either. The only things I can really quote (which I’ve learned in school) would be the laws of physics, mathematical equations and such. And, outside of/after school I never developed an obsession with quotes either. Sure, some of my favorite characters on TV have great lines, but nothing really noteworthy for a question like this one.

Travel tech: How much is too much?

(CNN) — It was late. I was tired. I needed to feed my nephew fast so we could get some much-needed rest without yet another “outing.”

Having just returned to the hotel room after a full day of travel, we could barely speak.

And when you’re that exhausted, the idea of being able to order food without talking to anyone — well, that’s luxury.

I used the in-room iPad, ordered some seriously pedestrian food that makes teenagers and 40-year-olds feel sated and complete, and marveled at the joys technology can bring.

Then, the phone rang.

“Hello? Miss Fletcher? I’m just calling to confirm your order …”

There were expletives that followed, but I won’t share them here.

Why would you offer the technology to free your guest from the “burden” of calling room service, only to call back to confirm and create an enormous amount of rage in an already volatile (read so very, very tired) guest?

Are ride-sharing apps beneficial to travelers? A big yes. (Most of the time.)

Riddle me this: What has lots of technological touches and doesn’t actually help anyone solve a problem?

A good deal of consumer-facing travel technology is my answer.

Grab, Lyft, Uber: Thank you (most of the time).

Contactless payments when cash is not on hand: Thank you (most of the time).

Playing my Spotify playlist in the car hire? Thanks, but really, no. I spent a fortune on these headphones and blocking out the world is sometimes only possible in the back of the car for 30 minutes.

iPad in hotel room: No, thank you. (See above.)

Online check-in: Yes, yes, yes, a thousand times yes.

Text messages from the hotel to check in on me: No, no, no.

Too much technology? Too little?

I understand everyone has a different approach, opinion and expectation around the intersection of travel transactions and technology.

But I’ll say this and stand by it: A smile and a suggestion from a helpful, trustworthy human is greater than an offer to accept the terms of conditions to get a “deal” I probably don’t need.

But occasionally only tech will do.

For example, when I need a last-minute reservation, and a trusted media source (CNN Travel) says, “this spot is one of the best, order this, here are a few top alternatives.”

We’ve come a long way, baby. In the 1950s, inflight entertainment meant checkers and cigarettes.

Or, I go onto a booking site, and voila, dinner for four at 7 p.m. and yes I’ll invite my guests thank you very much. No, I will not confirm my reservation more than once.

But how much tech is too much? How little is too little?

I do not have the answer, but I think there’s something we all forget. We are living through a technological, digital revolution. I wonder and marvel at all the changes in how we travel since I was a child.

There were smoking sections on planes, everyone was generally picked up and dropped off by family and friends at the airport, or you rented a car — or a car and driver.

Back then there was a movie on the plane. One movie. And chances are, you’d seen it. In a movie theater.

You read books, magazines, newspapers and were weighed down by their girth. (Again, I know plenty of people who still do printed matter for their travels. Except maps. No maps.)

Long before the days of social media, ‘sharing your holiday photos’ often involved using one of these tech relics.

There was also smoking in restaurants and bars (and there are still some in the world), coins in the jukebox, writing a check to your travel agent (Jeannie, if you’re out there, thank you for everything before the internet)!

We actually had to endure slide shows (imagine a conference room PowerPoint presentation and sub in your mom, a neighbor named Andy, and a handful of disgruntled friends and relatives, and you’re there).

“This is us at the Trevi fountain.”

“Look, Uncle Jerry rode a camel.”

“This lion almost ate us.”

Missing that human touch

In one — I like to think relatively short — lifetime, we’re talking about a sea change that even the skilled “trend spotters” among us could never have predicted. And there’s so much more to come that we can’t even imagine.

I adore technology. When I want to find out what the best airport lounge is in Mexico City, I text a friend who travels there every few weeks.

I use it to see if I can get a table at Maison Yaki in Brooklyn or Odette in Singapore (computer says no), or if I know anyone who knows anyone who can get me in to Maison Yaki or Odette (kind of, but I hate to impose).

I set reminders, I cross-reference several sites, apps and social media. I search reliable media sources and reach out to friends who love to eat and travel and never do anything shabbily.

I keep and flag emails, bookmark relevant content, track flight prices and play with all the options. Basically, like everyone else on Earth right now: I do all the things.

I stare at my airline app to see which seat is best (cross-referenced with another app). I game my miles, my upgrades, my points, my status, my credit cards, my loyalty. It’s probably taking up the time I should’ve spent writing my novel no one would read anyway.

My credit cards are saved as auto-fill, as are my billing and shipping addresses (yes, machine, they are different.)

We are global citizens grateful for WhatsApp, Facebook and Instagram, free Wi-Fi, global data plans (it behooves me to mention that CNN is owned by WarnerMedia and AT&T), maps, emails and aggregated lists saved on the “cloud,” recommendations from locals and expats, electronically accessible within seconds.

What is missing, though, in most of these things, is a human person to talk to about it. Planning a trip is one thing, but acting on it, making irreversible, expensive decisions, putting your money down, worrying that you’ll make a mistake or have a bad time or sweat the weather forecast is another.

The perfect alchemy of tech and truth

CNN’s James Williams enjoys a night in Aloft — the smart hotel for the digital age — and also meets a humanoid who helps guests check in to flights.

As a travel editor, and a curious and experienced traveler, my default is as follows: I want to help people the way that Google and Facebook can’t.

I want to be your friend and help you make the best decisions for you based on the most thorough and accurate information available — a dream that’s within reach because of technology.

I believe there’s a real opportunity to serve travelers those personal touches we all appreciate and enjoy with the technology that can solve common problems.

AI can aggregate, assume preferences based on previous purchases and transactions.

Search engines can put the highest bidder or the person with the most followers up top, expecting you not to go full Indiana Jones and dig up the thing to find the other better thing.

But travelers need trust, honesty and no interest other than helping you go somewhere you want to — and to eat and sleep well while you’re there.

Just ask any hotel staff member who has to sift through all the vitriolic comments left by customers or competitors on review sites who are not acting in anyone’s best interest save their own.

Regardless, there’s something about walking into a restaurant or a hotel or an airplane gate and being greeted with a smile. An offer of a small thing.

I’m here to say that the answer to the tech and travel conundrum isn’t another app.

It’s not another list or list of lists or someone sending you a list of lists.

It’s ideas. Supplied by someone who knows you and cares about your happiness (and that may also mean you give up a wee bit of data).

Together, we can figure out the perfect alchemy of tech and truth, personhood and prompt. But human conversations and contact are what will lead the charge.

Or, at least, I hope so.

An Open Letter to OSIRG 2017

Hola amigos (it seems like Spanish has become our default language)!

​A few nights ago, I was rambling away to Dana about my latest outrage on the human rights situation in Palestine. When I finally paused for breath, she​ quietly said “why aren’t you saying any of this in our group whatsapp chat? I am Palestinian so I know this, but they don't”. The thing is, I don’t know how to explain a situation that is so removed from the life most of us know (or at least the life I knew). 

Instead, I post my highlight reels of mosaic ruins, shisha bars, and the Mediterranean coastline on Instagram because how can I describe to you the frustration of getting off a bus to stand in line at yet another “security checkpoint” only to re-board the same bus hours later? Would you understand if I told you about the uneasiness that accompanies every passing of checkpoint gates which resemble a cross between a prison and a slaughterhouse… and the shame of feeling relieved to have reached the other side? Or what it’s like to be treated like a criminal simply for travelling home from work and never knowing when you will be pulled out of line to be questioned by soldiers with fingers pressed tightly over the triggers of their guns? For that matter, what right do I have as a non-Palestinian to voice my resentments? When my friends back home ask me what Palestine is like, the best I can come up with is “indescribable” but of course it’s not indescribable. Dana has helped me see that I have a responsibility to put into words what I’ve learned here.

I won’t go into the politics, laws, or historical debate behind the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, but I can share a little of the “facts on the ground” as I’ve seen them. I think that these examples of injustice, mistreatment, and violence also underlie each of your work, if in a different context. 

The prevailing narrative in the West is that Israel is a vulnerable state and has been forced to impose severe security measures because it is surrounded by hostile Arab states. We hear about Hamas launching rocket attacks into Israel and read news stories of Palestinians stabbing Israeli soldiers. In time, even if we don’t agree with Israel’s policies, we unconsciously begin to sympathize with the Israeli government’s motivations. The moment you step into Palestine though, you realize that the power dynamics are in fact very much reversed. Like the annexation wall, Israel’s military control of Palestine and its oppression of the Palestinian people are inescapable at every turn. A population under occupation cannot live in dignity because it is always subject to discrimination and an undercurrent of fear. Generations of Palestinians have been dispossessed of their homes, denied opportunities to study, work, move, or practice their religion freely, killed extra-judicially and callously, and intentionally deprived of basic necessities such as access to medical care, electricity and water. The Palestinian government itself is also riddled with corruption and responsible for serious human rights perversions. ​For Palestinians, human rights exist like clouds in the sky - you can see them but you can never seem to reach them.

In the short time I’ve been here, I’ve learned to tell the difference between the sound of gunfire and fireworks. I’ve read judgments in which the Israeli courts perform the most fantastic legal acrobatics to justify forcibly removing Palestinians from their lands. I’ve breathed in the toxic fumes and witnessed the seepage from an Israeli chemical plant which has devastated a Palestinian town and made its people sick. I’ve come to understand the magnetism of religious martyrdom, as both a means to escape an intolerable reality and demand for a justice sought but never known. I’ve heard my colleagues explain again and again to villagers who have experienced settler violence that the only thing we can do ​is get their​ stories out to the international community, because in a country under occupation, there is no realistic avenue of legal recourse. I’ve seen that six-year-olds can be torn from their parents and detained without charges, children can die from falling off tractors because neighboring settlement hospitals won’t open their doors to Palestinians, and a half million-dollar humanitarian aid project can be demolished in just one day on the pretext that it was erected without a building permit. I’ve long since ​stopped asking “but why?” because occupation, colonization, and apartheid don't give reasons. 

Out of everything I’ve come across however, the most striking is the resilience and generosity of the people who have been the most harmed in this conflict. Their spirit and gratitude for what remains is a powerful statement that however desperate a situation seems, as long as there is hope, tomorrow can be better.

​​I participated in OSIRG because I was curious about the world. I wanted to understand whether there was a collective psychology to humankind that might explain the wars, exploitation, and human rights abuse that have always been a part of our history. I see now that the question is more complex and maybe the answer doesn’t lie in the human condition. In fact, it is dangerous to categorize any person or situation from such a definitive standpoint lest we forget that those on the other side are also human beings, and in so doing, lose our own humanity and ​compassion. While solutions must end with accountability, they begin with understanding… so I try to remember Aya’s infamous line: maybe “conservatives just need a hug” sometimes. 

We are all in different places and championing different causes. Some of us are working on issues close to our hearts and others are working in new fields. Yet, in spite of the diversity of our experiences, I feel more connected to you now than ever before. I share deeply your indignation towards inequality and unfairness and your determination to break these shackles of abuse. At the end of the day, I don’t imagine that 20 years of cruelty and ridicule faced by a transgender woman is any more or less traumatic than a little boy who is slowly starving because his government is pursuing a war in the name of religious rhetoric or a young father who has been mistakenly shot because of institutionalized racial profiling.

Like Marko said “Although we were all strangers in that rooftop terrace more than a month ago, today, we are together. I hope that we keep this bond strong.”
