R.I.P. Rick Buckler, drummer for The Jam
Very sad news from the UK.
I've never been one for the concept of "tight" playing when it comes to rock'n'roll, especially punk. But Rick Buckler had the proverbial mosquito's ass ability while hitting deceptively hard and never over-rolling away the song. It's that suave savagery that the best Mod drummers pull off (and there are only a few of those).
A friend gave me a mixtape in high school that had "Going Underground" on it, which led me to soon find The Jam's sophomore album, This Is the Modern World -- I think the first or second punk LP I ever bought.
I knew that "underground" in London parlance was a reference to their tube system, but of course more than that. For me, this song jolted through my head right as I was becoming aware that the underground was where I was headed.

The Jam, 1977 (Rick Buckler, left)
These days, with America turning into a conman's dumpster, his digital cronies controlling mass media and spreading his garbage, it's best to head back to the underground again... though I never left...
Thanks Rick.

The Jam - Funeral Pyre (1981)
All these people dying these days...
One that I missed until recently was Jam drummer Rick Buckler, who passed away on Feb. 15th. From 1979 to 1982, the Jam were my absolute favorites. Buckler was not a flashy drummer, but this was one of his finest moments. Sadly, this song seems too appropriate now.
The weak get crushed as the strong grow stronger

Rick Buckler RIP
Tumblr media
Sad news that some time drummer and more full time antique furniture restorer (and a very bloody good one at that ...) Mr Buckler has died - and with it any lingering hope that one of the most successful bands in British music history will ever get back together.
However, since we did this way back in 2012, (oh, and one of us did this) we do reserve the right on this occasion to resurrect in tribute a certain joke that has become remarkably ever more true as the years have rolled by:
'We say, we say, we say - what does Paul Weller have in common with scones?'
'We don't know Mares, what does Paul Weller have in common with scones?' They're both UTTERLY SHIT without THE JAM!
Oh, and this song never aged either ... both the tune and the bittersweet lyric:
