6 months post op
Well ladies and gentlemen, we made it. Six. Months. Post. Op. Wow. What a journey it has been. I feel like I’ve lived 3 different lives.
This new body has given me what I always knew I had, shape. Real feminine shape that makes clothes actually fit my body. It’s crazy to think how diet and exercise truly couldn’t give me this body. I feel like I’m a butterfly floating through life. My jean size is smaller than what I wore in high school (granted I do think sizes are “bigger” nowadays.)
It’s peak* week for me because next week I’m leaving for vacation but I’m already thinking about what I’m going to do when I come home. For the past decade, every winter no matter how hard I try I always gain 10 lbs lol then I spend the spring and summer trying to lose it. Rinse and repeat. This year will obviously be different. I have a plan. When I come back I’ll be wearing my faja 12 hrs a day (basically to curb my appetite from the compression.) I will up my personal training 2x a week. I want to do private Pilates classes 2x a week. I bought a walking pad so no excuses to not get 10k steps but in the winter I want to aim for 20k steps a day. Half inside half outside. After that is my meal plan. Prioritizing protein and water intake. I’ve been slacking as per usual lol my lack of protein amps up my sugar addiction to supplement for my hunger lol I know it’s not funny and actually fucked up. I blame my mother for not cooking when I was younger and subsequently not teaching me.
In addition to fitness and nutrition I need to unclutter my mind. I have wayyyy too much stuff. Clothes, shoes, bags. I’m going to do a fall cleaning and donate everything. Even the designer stuff. I have to make a promise to myself; no more secondhand shopping. I get it, trust me, more than anyone how “good” it is for the environment. But I do believe there is a spiritual aspect to it that is negative. Bringing someone’s thrown away trash (essentially) into your scared space, onto your body. It’s bad. I’ve been thrifting / vintage shopping since 2011 and let me tell you I’ve accumulated so much shit lol it’s just not fun. Yeah you’re saving a buck but who gives a fuck? lol in the grand scheme of things when you get older you won’t want another person’s trash. Trust me. There’s a reason why rich people always remodel the homes they buy.
Beauty maintenance also starts in the winter. Stringent morning and nighttime routines. Red light therapy. Facials. Chemical peels. Micro-needling. Lasers. Lymphatic massages. I really want an eyebrow lift. I was thinking about getting an eyebrow transplant but I think an eyebrow lift is the way to go. Investing in your body > clothes/bags. Trust me
To circle back, this new body has changed my life. My job is to now maintain it and make sure it only gets better. You work out in the winter to show off in the summer. Next summer I want to be on a super yacht off the coast of Italy in the tiniest Brazilian bikini known to man. I want to take a photo 1 year post op and see how much I’ve changed. I want to lose 10lbs and then I truly think I’ll be happy (I swear I’m not crazy)
It’s so wild going from a size 6/8 to a 2/4 lol plastic surgery is so worth it if you do it slow, go to the best, and make tweaks
*peak week entails
Mani + pedi
Hair Botox
Brazilian wax (will get laser when I get back)
Eyelash extensions
Facial
Due to the location I going to I’m not getting a spray tan but that would usually be on the list.

Few people are in a hurry in Rio de Janeiro – after all, it's a city widely known around Brazil for its carefree attitude and beach-centric lifestyle. It's here where the jovial words, 'Boa praia!' ('Have a good beach!') are as commonly heard on a Monday as a Saturday. Usually, tourists like to do as locals do as well - milking the city's sun-soaked atmosphere for all its worth.
Morning
A perfect day in Rio de Janeiro
Head straight for the Zona Sul, home to many of Rio's upscale neighborhoods and the bulk of its famous beaches, including Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon. First order of business: caffeine! Do as Brazilians do and pair a cafezinho (little espresso) with a pão de queijo (cheese bread). There's an excellent café in Leblon called Cafeína to do just that.
Amped and refreshed, it's time to stake your spot on Rio's postcard-perfect sands, but do so carefully. Rio's Zona Sul beaches are lined with lifeguard posts, each known for the specific microclimate it attracts. The best beaches are Ipanema and Leblon. Here posto (post) 9 is where you'll find Rio's mauricinhos and patricinhas (the rich, bronzed and beautiful), with a section in front of Rua Farme de Amoedo that draws the GLBT crowd; and posto 11 is for families. Choose accordingly and let the beach caipirinhas (Brazil's national drink, with cachaça, limes and sugar) commence. Until lunch, it's all sizzle, sun and samba.
Lunch
Once hunger sets in, there are a few don't misses nearby, depending on your mood. A favorite beach day lunch is açaí, the purple, iron-and-antioxidant-rich berry that's usually blended with honey, granola, bananas and guaraná, a natural Amazonian relative of caffeine, into a refreshing, über-Brazilian treat. There's no better than Polis Sucos'. Alternatively, a quick and scenic taxi ride down Av. Atlântica – one of the world's most famous beachfront thoroughfares – lands you at Cervantes, a Copacabana institution famous for its filet mignon, cheese and pineapple sandwiches. Lastly, for those with deeper pockets and bigger appetites, a visit to one of Brazil's all-you-can-eat churascarias (steakhouses) is in order. Here an endless onslaught of perfectly-grilled meats is brought to your table until you cry uncle. Churrascaria Carretão (Rua Visconde de Piraja, 112, Ipanema) is one of the city's best.
Afternoon
Reserve your afternoon for sightseeing, when the sun can become relentless on the beach anyway. Make your way to Cosmo Velho, where the slightly unnerving cog train to the 710m-high peak known as Corcovado ascends through protected Tijuca National Forest to the Cristo Redentor , one of the most impressive monuments and urban views on earth. So impressive in fact, that is was voted one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Afterwards, gauge your mood: feeling edgy or artsy? The former should book a favela tour. No, it's not dangerous. Yes, it's absolutely fascinating. A tour through Rio's notorious shantytowns is both eye-opening and inspiring, leaving you with a far better sense of the intricate socioeconomic struggles of Rio's complicated urban fabric. Marcelo Armstrong's Favela Tours is a pioneer. The latter should book a tour through historic Santa Teresa, Rio's hillside bohemian neighborhood, full of historic mansions, interesting museums and artsy shops and galleries. Viator offers fascinating walking tours.
Evening
They say New York is the city that never sleeps, but Rio doesn't get much shut-eye either. Begin your evening with Brazilian-slanted tapas and creative cocktails at Botofogo hotspot Meza Bar before heading to Lapa, Rio's gritty but excellent nightlife district. A lot of samba clubs have opened here in the last decade, resurrecting a dilapidated district into Rio's most interesting option for cultural nightlife. Both amateur and professional samba bands turn up here nightly, offering hip-shaking samba to a wildly mixed crowd. It's ridiculously good fun. The three best spots are Carioca Da Gema, Clube dos Democráticos and Rio Scenarium. Rio Scenarium is the most touristy but with the biggest wow factor - each of its three cinematic floors is lavishly decorated with some 10,000 movie set props and abundant antique furniture. Go ahead, take a load off on that 18th-century Victorian divan. You need some rest.
These are the best things to do in Rio for free
Beach Days 😍

⚠️ WHAT IS HAPPENING IN BRAZIL: a thread ⚠️
am i going insane or more of the world should care about a country generating covid variants that could spread internationally? right
spoiler alert: covid is killing us. badly. no, it's not this bad everywhere. yes, you should care.
our government is DELIBERATELY and CLEARLY trying to kill us, not only not doing anything but actually trying to stop any help from getting here, with censorship to go with it.
PLEASE, READ RHIS THREAD
it's NOT this bad everywhere:
"No other nation that experienced such a major outbreak is still grappling with record-setting death tolls and a health care system on the brink of collapse."
yes, you SHOULD care:
"Preliminary studies suggest that the variant that swept through the city of Manaus is not only more contagious, but it also appears able to infect some people who have already recovered from other versions of the virus."
you REALLY should care:
"And the variant has slipped Brazil’s borders, showing up in two dozen other countries and in small numbers in the United States."
1 in every 4 covid deaths WORLDWIDE is happening in brazil, INTERNATIONAL MEDIA ISN'T TALKING ABOUT THIS ENOUGH.
our president?
- calling it "a little flu"
- literally making trying to legally stop states from lockdown
- blocked any attempts to get vaccines here for months
- recommended meds with no scientific proof which caused SEVERAL other deaths for overuse of improper meds
he refuses to wear a mask in public but it's not just the things he isn't doing, it's the deliberate steps he takes to make sure ANYONE who tries to do ANYTHING to help (even the US!!!!!!!! OFFERING US VACCINES FOR MONTHS!!!!!!!!!!!!) is shut down.
we have no oxygen. no ICU beds. no proper masks. basic food is so expensive here the country is falling back to hunger, so whoever is not dying from covid is dying out of starvation or due to the complete and utter collapse of our healthcare system.
if you read the articles i post here you will know brazil has a RECORD of being GREAT in this type of scenario & getting vaccines to everyone fast as fuck.
this is a DELIBERATE ATTEMPT TO KILL US, i couldn't possibly stress that enough.
who is it killing? take a guess.
"The study also found that Black Brazilians were likelier to lose their jobs or face pay cuts than white people during the pandemic. The death rate in poorer cities has been substantially higher than in rich ones."
BY JANUARY OF THIS YEAR the ny times was reporting "The country has not yet approved any of the vaccines on the market."
NOT EVEN APPROVED. ANY. OF THE VACCINES.
this isn't a tragedy, this is our government's plan.
again, why are people not helping? i have no clue.
"On Friday, officials at the World Health Organization called the surge of cases in Brazil deeply troubling and warned that it could wreak havoc well beyond the country’s borders."
censorship? oh yeah, the president's son is trying to silence a guy who made a TWEET calling the president out. & that was only news not a shady unexplainable death bc the guy is famous and rich in the first place.
this is not the only threat he has made, btw. during his CAMPAIGN he said he'd kill people who opposed his government. that is how low we are.
10,3MI brazilians might starve to death and things are only getting worse:
have i proven my point? cuz honestly there is no lack of evidence, but i can go graphic if you need to hear what happens when a patient needs oxygen or an ambulance and our hospitals can't provide it.
no? yeah. better not.
"ok but what can we do"
TALK. ABOUT. THIS.
WHY IS NOBODY TALKING ABOUT THIS.
WHY IS THIS NOT EVERYWHERE.
WHY IS NOBODY HELPING.
i literally feel crazy, as if this is only happening in my head. every brazilian i know is desperate and nobody cares.
"ok but what else"
we need donations, badly. money for food, masks, literally all supplies. if you are a single person guess what THERE ARE NO ORGANISED WAY TO HELP YET you literally need to find a brazilian or learn portuguese to be able to get to local donations centres.
have i mentioned nobody cares? how is a country going through this massive of a crisis with a government trying to kill and silence us yet there people barely heard about this???? given IT IS CREATING DEADLY VARIANTS THAT ARE SPREADING BEYOND BORDERS
oh my god i feel insane
special call-out for portugal & also the US for fucking us up historically
https://t.co/JQ9LBkfSIV
per request i will make an english speaking video about brazil's covid situation to be posted @ youtube.com/c/AndressaBuss later this week
🌟DONATIONS LINKS🌟
update: if you want to place a donation to @CUFA_Brasil or @maesdafavela i will offer free portuguese-english translations to help with the process.
email me @ [email protected] (i can't keep up with DMs here)
You can also try to finda artists or writers or professionals in brazil and hire them! or tip them a kofi! Or simply search for "brazil" in the search and help out by sending one dollar or two in kofi or gofundmes that will also help brazilians staying safe
i will keep linking more as i find it. donation centre to get basic food to people who need it: https://t.co/gFZdskBE6G
Update: finally managed to get an extensive list of options for donations after over 24hrs trying, from jun last year so some campaigns have ended but there's still plenty to choose from
(again: im available for free translations & help in your donation process if you need it)
just assisted in a R$740 donation process to the above donation centre & i am working on putting together a list of various options for donations as well as brazilian artists who are making emergency commissions :)
im mostly trying to assist people place the donations themselves & when i have to place the donation i offer vast proof (of whatever kind you need) of each transaction
im not a random account with no face behind it, im a broke history teacher who has covid, im trying to help

We promised this vaccine waiver 20 years ago
The world’s 125 poorest countries (2.5b people) have received zero covid vaccine doses to date. The 85 poorest countries project vaccination in 2023/24. This is vaccine apartheid.
https://pluralistic.net/2021/05/21/wait-your-turn/#vaccine-apartheid
It’s not that poor countries can’t make their own vaccines. The Global South has a lot of vaccine production capacity. The problem is Big Pharma, which refuses to transfer the patents and know-how to repurpose those facilities for mRNA production.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1IhL-aGt5dEOVegy4eksgs4T6vDl6L6NbY_YJdvDonBI/edit#gid=0
South Africa and India have petitioned the WTO for a vaccine waiver. We should all want this: first, because it is monstrous to doom millions to die in order to preserve the regulatory privileges of a handful of hugely profitable, heavily subsidized pharma companies.
But second, even if you don’t care about being monstrous, a waiver is needed to ensure all our survival: the longer and wider the virus circulates, the more mutations we’ll get, with the mounting risk of a more virulent, more lethal, more vaccine-resistant strain.
The pharma industry has an army of high-paid lobbyists (including Howard Dean), and volunteer simps (like Bill Gates) who are pushing the story that a waiver is unfair and counterproductive, a betrayal of the fundamental patent bargain.
https://pluralistic.net/2021/05/15/how-to-rob-a-bank/#roll-the-dice
They say that the pharma companies committed their capital to vaccine research because we, the people of the world, had promised them exclusive rights to those discoveries (notwithstanding that we also paid for the vast majority of that R&D).
If we alter the deal now, how can pharma trust us next time?
Of all the lies told by the pharma industry about the pandemic, this is the most insidious. Because that’s not how the global patent system works at all.
Gen Xers and their elders will remember the summer of 1999 and the Battle of Seattle, where anti-globalization activists fought for weeks to block the signing of the WTO agreement and its chapter on IP, the TRIPS agreement.
The WTO agreement fundamentally changed the way global patents worked.
Prior to the WTO, it was common for poor countries to completely ignore the patents issued by rich countries (unless the World Bank or a former colonial power coerced them into recognizing these claims).
That’s because countries that are net importers of finished goods have no reason to honor their suppliers’ claims — doing so merely burdens their own struggling manufacturers by forcing them to pay rent to rich foreigners.
This creates drag on local development, ensuring that importer countries stay importers, never becoming self-sufficient.
Ignoring other countries’ exclusive rights regimes — copyright, patent, trademark, etc — is a tried-and-true method to gain self-sufficiency.
That’s why the Framers of the US Constitution decided that America would ignore foreign patents and copyrights, a policy that persisted for over a century, only ending once the US became a net exporter of ideas and inventions, and thus stood to gain more than it lost.
Not just the US, of course. Many European nations spent a century or two a-pirating while their developed their capacity. The Dutch, for example, abolished patents during much of the 19th and 20th centuries.
It doesn’t make sense for a poor country to pay a rich country for rent on ideas. At least, it doesn’t make sense from the perspective of the poor countries.
It’s easy to see what rich countries get out of the deal.
That’s where the WTO (and specifically TRIPS) came in.
TRIPS proposed a bargain to poor countries: if you pay rent on rich countries’ ideas (by recognizing their patents, trademarks and copyrights), we’ll engineer the system so that you become the favored manufacturing contractors for rich countries.
This creates jobs in the short term, and, long term, it builds capacity, by teaching people how to build and operate complex systems.
It’s a form of “technology transfer” that replaces the old adversarial system of rent-collectors and tenant states with global cooperation.
This was a dubious proposition, but the WTO threw in a sweetener: a provision for emergengy waivers. These meant that if there was ever a situation where honoring foreign patents would result in domestic mass-death, those offshore obligations would be immediately suspended.
Think about that for a second. The pharma industry wants you to think that a vaccine waiver reneges on the bargain the world made with it.
But that was never the bargain.
The bargain the Global South struck was, “We will pay rent on rich countries’ ideas. In exchange, we’ll get capacity-building help. In case of emergency, all bets are off: not only will we get access to ideas for free, the WTO will use its might to force tech transfer.”
That’s the bargain pharma signed up for. The claim that a waiver reneges on the deal is truly Orwellian, a heads-I-win-tails-you-lose proposition where poor countries pay rent on ideas and get NOTHING in return — save death and the option to pay yet more rent.
“The TRIPS Intellectual Property Waiver Proposal: Creating the Right Incentives in Patent Law and Politics to end the COVID-19 Pandemic” is a preprint of an LSE Legal Studies Working Paper by a group of Anglo-Irish legal and poli sci scholars.
https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3851737
First published yesterday, it delves into a detailed account of this dynamic, and opens with a devastating argument:
If the pharma companies are right and poor countries truly don’t have the capacity to build vaccine factories, then the WTO is a failure.
The whole point was to build capacity.
If it’s not there, then all the rents the poor world paid all century were a lethally squandered opportunity — they should have followed in the footsteps of America and the Netherlands and ignored the rent demanded by wealthy lands.
The authors describe how pharma gamed the system in the WTO decades. For example, companies devote enormous energy to patenting small variations on their processes and products, allowing them to extend the life of their patents long beyond the 20 years they’re promised.
This produces some genuinely hideous outcomes. In Patrick Radden Keefe’s EMPIRE OF PAIN, the author documents how the Sackler family contemplated seeking regulatory approval to prescribe Oxycontin to children in order to extend the life of their patents.
https://www.inverse.com/mind-body/patrick-radden-keefe-empire-of-pain-interview/amp
It’s hard to imagine how we’ll survive the pandemic crisis without a waiver. COVAX, the “voluntary” system that lets billionaires, corporations and rich countries offer vaccine doses to poor countries as charity, is a total disaster.
COVAX has only raised pledges of 20% of the needed doses — and it isn’t delivering on those pledges.
The system isn’t just failing by accident — the pharma companies are actively sabotaging it.
C-TAP, the WTO’s own scheme for pooling vaccine production know-how, has failed, largely because companies like Pfizer and Biontech have forced NDAs on their contractors that prevent them from participating in the program.
https://contracts.justia.com/companies/maravai-lifesciences-holdings-inc-11469/contract/137780/
The pharma companies have refused to license for mRNA vaccines for production in both in the rich world (Canada, Israel and Denmark) and the poor world (Bangladesh).
The deals pharma struck with the global south don’t just bump the world’s poorest to the back of the line — they also charge the poorest people the highest prices for vaccines. Astrazeneca is charging South Africa twice the going rate in the EU.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2021/jan/22/south-africa-paying-more-than-double-eu-price-for-oxford-astrazeneca-vaccine
This price-gouging is papered over with misleading claims of charity — for example, Moderna says it won’t extract profit from Brazilians Fiocruz until the pandemic ends — but the agreement allows Moderna to declare the pandemic over in July.
https://www.ft.com/content/c474f9e1-8807-4e57-9c79-6f4af145b68671O
Pharma’s claims of acting in the public interest are pure fantasy.
Pfizer says it makes a 20% profit by selling vaccines it makes for $3/dose at $19.50/dose (“the pandemic price”) — and promises that this price will go up to $175/dose for boosters.
https://s21.q4cdn.com/317678438/files/doc_financials/2020/q4/PFE-USQ_Transcript_2021-02-02.pdf
The very idea of pharma patents is surprisingly new. France instituted pharma patents in 1960; Ireland, 1964; Germany, 1968; Japan, 1976. Pharma demanded these patents to produce the “incentive” to invest, but the bulk of basic pharma R&D is still publicly funded.
Take the Astrazeneca vaccine, developed at Oxford. Between 97.1 and 99% of the funding for that research came from public sources, not Astrazeneca’s profits.
https://doi.org/10.1101/2021.04.08.21255103
The WTO agreement promised the Global South that in a global pandemic, the same might that was used to coerce them into passing laws enforcing rich countries’ patents would be brought to bear on rich countries to force them to help make medicine where it’s needed.
The pharma shills who claim that waiving the patents on mRNA vaccines actually have a point: pharma companies have gamed the patent system so that much of the know-how is never disclosed in patent filings, and the filings themselves are sealed for 18 months.
In the face of this sabotage, the WTO could order rich member states to uphold their obligations by forcing their companies to transfer patents AND trade secrets to poor countries — just as the US forced pharma companies to pool their research on pennicillin during WWII.
That would be the fair thing to do. The right thing to do. The rational thing to do — if we want to ensure the continuation of our civilization and even our species in the face of new mutant strains.
The WTO claimed that poor countries that honored the TRIPS would become tech exporters, building their own domestic capacity. Twenty years later, they’re still importers — and on track to stay that way forever (or until we’re all killed by covid).
The US has no standing to complain about a TRIPS waver. A country that built its fortune and capacity by refusing to pay rent to rich nations for their ideas deserves the same treatment once it becomes rich itself.

MUWAT!!! Do we have your attention? Good. We now turn things over to Jonathan Drew to explain this cigar in his own words, "The MUWAT story began on the very first consumer blending session at the Joya de Nicaragua factory in late 2010 during a Cigar Safari tour. After conducting blending sessions for the previous 3 years at the Drew Estate factory we were amped up to extend the concept to JDN. I worked with the JDN team utilizing DE tobaccos, including a San Andreas Negro Wrapper, Ecuadorian Connecticut Shade Binder and hearty Brazilian Mata Fina Filler, coupled with Nicaraguan fillers provided by JDN. The blend proved to be rich and earthy, with a bright, sweet undertone. As months of blending passed, I began calling this cigar “MUWAT” (My Uzi Weighs A Ton). We all had a good laugh at the name, but when I went back to their factory to pick up the round of 50 sticks (which seemed to literally weigh a ton), the brand was officially born. Enjoy the “MUWAT”!" Do what the man says, enjoy the MUWAT. The 5 1/5 X 52 robusto known as the "+11" is available to you inside each of our 3 custom built walk-in humidors. Keen Heat Sensor
Keen Heat Sensor
One of the most serious issues you will confront when utilizing a warmed hair styling apparatus is overheating. We've all been there: you're calmly fixing your hair when an especially clever scene comes up on the show you have playing out of sight. Following a strong moment or two of giggling, you understand (in absolute frightfulness!) that your poor hair has been sandwiched in the middle of two or three hot plates the whole time.
That is the point at which it occurs; the greatest magnificence dread for ladies the world more than: a piece of your lovely hair severs… and all on account of excessively much warmth… .
In the event that your palms are as of now damp with sweat from this brief yet frightening portrayal, you're not the only one.
Hair breakage is a very normal issue, and even the most prepared of hairdressers can foul up now and again. That is the reason LumaBella's Keratin Duel Touch Hair Straightener includes a remarkable shrewd warmth sensor. This clever little device can really tell when there is an excess of warmth for your hair, and will consequently conform to a more secure styling temperature!
Highlights like this demonstrate hair straighteners truly have progressed significantly in the course of the most recent decade, and the LumaBella Keratin Duel Touch Hair Straightener unquestionably doesn't disillusion in such manner! At the point when the fear of hair harm is expelled from regular fixing, there's no restriction to the styles you can make with a hair straightener like this creation this a perfect decision for tenderfoot and master beauticians alike!
Coasting Plate Design
Tragically, the plates in the LumaBella Keratin Duel Touch Hair Straightener won't start to mystically suspend on your washroom sink! Be that as it may, they do glide in the edge! They are extraordinarily built to convey a steady warmth with a smooth skim, and their plan empowers an adaptable grasp on the straightener, giving you extraordinary outcomes regardless of how you hold it. A piece of mantle: São Pedro and São Paulo rocks
Almost a 1000km from the Brazilian coast and 1800km from the African coast a 12.5m high archipelago shyly shows its face from the breaking waves. This is the archipelago of São Pedro and São Paulo rocks, a group of 15 small islets and rocks that although appearing small are actually part of something much bigger, the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. In reality the rocky pinnacles rise around 4000m from the ocean floor, it is one of the few places in the world where part of Mid Atlantic Ridge appears above the water (even when it is only 12,5m in height).
An mid-ocean ridge is a spreading zone where magma well up to build a new oceanic crust. At slow spreading ocean ridges which have a small supply of upwelling magma oceanic core complexes (also known as megamullions) form long ridges parallel to the spreading ridge. Usually these seabed geological features have smooth domes or turtleback shapes lined with transverse ridges where the abyssal mantle is exposed. The rocks of Sao Pedro and Sao Paul are part of these domes made up of exposed abyssal mantle. In fact, it is the only location in the Atlantic where exposure above the ocean occurs. The rocks that are exposed are serpintinized abyssal mantle periodiote. Serpentinite forms when sea water intrudes down fractures and reacts with ultramafic rocks in the lower crust and upper mantle. Peridotite on the other hand is a ultramafic (rocks with low silica content) rock composed mostly of olivine and pyroxene minerals. Thus the archipelago offers are rare look into the oceanic lithosphere.
Just below the ocean’s surface marine life thrives due to the rich flora and fauna surrounding the islets. This is the main reason that the archipelago is a paradise for a number of seabirds. Charles Darwin visited the archipelago in February of 1832. He listed the fauna he could find which at the time were: two birds, a crab, a tick, a fly (on the bird) and a moth.
The islands are only 250m across, there is almost no vegetation (a constant sea spray prohibits growth) except for some algae and fungus and the only source of fresh water comes from rain. There is a lighthouse and a research station on the biggest island which is manned by 4 researchers for a period of 10 days a time.
Here you can see how the pinnacles from São Pedro and São Paulo would appear from under water: http://thetim.es/1dTZInR

The coronavirus has hastened the post-human era – TechCrunch
Mario Gabriele Contributor
In the mid-1970s, Professor Fereidoun M. Esfandiary decided to change his name. From then on he would be legally called “FM-2030.”
“Conventional names define a person’s past: ancestry, ethnicity, nationality, religion. I am not who I was ten years ago … The name 2030 reflects my conviction that the years around 2030 will be a magical time. In 2030 we will be ageless and everyone will have an excellent chance to live forever. 2030 is a dream and a goal,” he offered in explanation.
It didn’t hurt that by 2030 he would be 100 years old, an age he was sure he would reach.
Already in his forty-odd years of living, FM — which some speculated stood for “Future Man” — defied easy categorization. The son of an Iranian diplomat, he’d lived in 17 countries by the age of 11 and would go on to represent his country’s basketball team at the 1948 Olympic Games before beginning an academic career. He was educated at Berkeley and UCLA, later becoming one of the first professors of futurology at the New School. It was there that he would begin to espouse his “new concepts of the human,” discussing the steps necessary to transition to the age of post-humanity. FM described this as an epoch in which Homo sapiens became “post-biological organisms,” transcending the limits of their body through technology.
FM-2030 (Image Credits: Wikimedia Commons (opens in a new window) under a Flora Schnall (opens in a new window) license)
Much of the 21st century has seen us hurtle toward a post-human future, fulfilling predictions FM made half a century earlier. Over the course of his career, he foresaw the creation of 3D printers — which he referred to as “Santa Claus machines” — along with the advent of telemedicine, teleconferencing, teleshopping and genetic editing.
Though that suggests the process of post-humanization is well under way, we may look back on 2020 and the coronavirus crisis as a crossing over. A time in which our relationship to core aspects of our humanity is fundamentally remade. In particular, I believe we are seeing meaningful recalibrations of our relationship to identity, labor, health and love. In short, the post-human era is beginning in earnest.
Identity
The shift to a locked-in world has accelerated the acceptance of identity as distinct from physical body or place. We still want to communicate, socialize and play during this time, but have only a digital version to offer. Those constraints are forcing new expressions of selfhood, from the Zoom background used to express a personal interest or make a joke, to the avatars roaming rich, interactive metaverses. Nintendo has seen millions turn to Animal Crossing to socialize, trade virtual assets and host both weddings and conferences, while Travis Scott’s surreal performance inside of Fortnite attracted 12.3 million concurrent views, and 27.7 million unique attendees. We are showcasing even the darker aspects of our nature via these platforms, with some on Animal Crossing bullying and torturing villagers they deem “ugly.”
Tools like Pragli illustrate how this development manifests in the workplace beyond Zoom backgrounds ripped from “Tiger King” or “Love Is Blind.” Rather than hopping onto a video call with co-workers, Pragli offers the ability to connect with anime-style avatars of your officemates. Changing one’s appearance on the platform is determined by the options the company rolls out, with a recent update showcasing the ability for men to sport a bun, braid or ponytail. Set “happy” or “sad” expressions blur the lines between real and performative feelings.
All of this is in stark contrast to the masked, distant, de-individuated person we show outside our homes, something a little less than human. There are indications that this redacted version of ourselves is becoming something of a style. G95’s “biohoodie” features a built-in face-cover, while creative studio Production Club showed off a hazmat suit designed for socializing. Even once the worst is over, we may see a new cautiousness and implied distance expressed in fashion.
Labor
“Work gives you meaning and purpose and life is empty without it,” said Stephen Hawking. Whether that is an assessment you agree with, much of our conception of ourselves is tied up in our labor. COVID-19 is accelerating a shift away from humans and toward machines, doing so at a time in which we may actually feel grateful for cyborg usurpers as they keep critical services running and spare us from disease. Neolix, a Chinese manufacturer of driverless vans, has seen a spike in demand since the outbreak and has been trusted to ferry food and medical supplies, and to disinfect streets. Suppliers like AMP, UVD, Nuro and Starship have experienced a similar surge, while the order books of industrial behemoths like Harmonic Drive and Fanuc suggest more universal demand. The latter saw orders increase 7% between Q4 and March.
This insinuation is not limited to manual labor. With customer support and moderation offices closing down, many companies are aggressively employing AI solutions. Facebook and Google have expanded automated moderation, while PayPal used chatbots for 65% of customer inquiries in recent weeks, a record for the firm.
Those lucky enough to retain their jobs may face a very different work environment in which they are forced to collaborate with robots and be treated as an increasingly mechanized system themselves. Walmart greeters will stand side-by-side with automated floor-scrubbers, and McDonald’s cooks may soon be joined by a kitchen full of bionic sous-chefs. Amazon warehouse workers — old-hands at human-robot collaboration thanks to the company’s acquisition of Kiva Systems — must adapt to being managed more like their pallet-ferrying co-workers, with temperatures monitored by thermal cameras. That is just a small part of the broader surveillance blitz being undertaken around the world and across industries. China is installing more cameras to monitor the comings-and-goings of citizens, while companies dip into budgets to purchase “tattleware,” software designed to surveil employees. Among the beneficiaries are companies like InterGuard, which provide minute-by-minute breakdowns of how workers spend time online. Sneek takes photos of workers as often as once a minute. The company’s CEO joked that the “sneeksnap” command came in particularly handy when a colleague did something embarrassing like picking their nose.
Health
Much of our waking life is filled with health-related ruminations. As we become more aware of our vulnerabilities, we are turning to technologies to extend corporeal limitations, treating our bodies more like software with which we can experiment. Consumers are turning to immunity-boosting supplements such as Vitamin C and zinc, which have soared in sales, in addition to courting riskier treatments like “rectal ozone insufflations,” peddled by influencers. Spurred on by world-leaders like Trump and Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro, demand for hydroxychloroquine has grown rapidly, with prescriptions increasing ~500%.
Whatever your opinion of the president or the treatment in question, this represents a rapid, iterative model of medicine more akin to the Silicon Valley mantra of “move fast and break things” than a considered FDA approval process. Biohacking communities, a group with high-tolerance for health-related risks, are teaming up online to research COVID-19 vaccines on their own time. “Biohacking used to be a fringe space, but I think this is becoming a kind of breakout moment for things like DIY biology and community labs and hackerspaces,” one contributor noted.
Beyond immediate experimentation, we are looking to extend the limits of our bodies in order to accommodate changing plans for the future. Reports suggest that men have turned to at-home sperm collection companies like Legacy during quarantine, motivated by fears of diminished fertility and perhaps the acknowledgment that with life on hold, children may have to wait. That certainly seems to be the case for 1,894 women surveyed by Modern Fertility and SoFi: 31% noted that the pandemic had affected their fertility plans, while 41% stated they are delaying childbearing because of the coronavirus.
Love
“The trouble is not that I am single and likely to stay single,” novelist Charlotte Brontë once wrote, “but that I am lonely and likely to stay lonely.”
The current state of affairs does not offer many ways to amend that state of misery, prompting some to turn to AI companions. Created in 2015, Replika provides a sympathetic texting partner, designed to serve as a digital therapist. But for many of the company’s 500K monthly active users, Replika is too charming to resist: up to 40% consider the bot a romantic partner. The coronavirus may serve as the ideal catalyst for relationships between humans and artificial personalities to deepen. There are signs we may already prefer their company: research on Microsoft’s XiaoIce indicated that conversations with the chatbot last longer than human-to-human interactions.
For those committed to finding love among creatures of blood and bone, the pandemic has forced a recalibration of what it means to date. Interactions take place almost entirely online, through chat or video calls, changing the necessary criteria for a match. Location matters much less now than availability and responsiveness. When the desire for touch, or “skin hunger” as it is gruesomely called, becomes too much to bear, interested parties must navigate a meeting. In the process, we treat partners as potential threats, owners of a corpus that may endanger us, despite best intentions. In doing so, we view the individual as distinct from their body, a separate being in possession of a liability with which we must negotiate. Depending on the length of the pandemic, we may see this fear harden into an unconscious aversion, reviving the disgust for the corporeal felt by more puritanical eras. These mores may take time to correct.
The self, as we know it, is being decimated. That may not be a bad thing. As identity moves online, as work is stripped from us, as our physical bodies are optimized like an OS, as love sheds its carnality, new opportunities will emerge. Humans will find meaning in new modes of self-expression, discover purpose beyond work (or reclassify what work means), reengineer physical limits as “biology eats the world” and find affection in new beings. We are undergoing a period of Schumpeterian “creative destruction,” felt at the anthropological rather than industrial level. Great things may come of it.
For FM-2030, the future was something at which to marvel, where “people will belong to no specific families or factions … we will free-flow across the planet and beyond. Highly individual yet universal.” Though the changes wrought by the coronavirus appear bleak, some of FM’s vision feels true: We are united as a world, fighting against a common enemy, more connected than ever before. Perhaps, in time, the rest of FM’s dream will be made manifest.
For all of his prescience, however, FM-2030 got one prediction very wrong. He did not make his 100th birthday, dying of pancreatic cancer in 2000. He was just 69. If he has his way though, he may still have a role to play in the creation of the future. Though dead, FM’s body remains frozen in a state of cryonic suspension in Scottsdale, Ariz. Perhaps he is waiting for the world to catch up.

DIAMOND BEACH, N.J.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Global alternative asset manager The Carlyle Group, together with
Accelerated Marketing Partners (AMP), announced today that on July 10th,
18 oceanfront residences will be auctioned for The Grand at Diamond
Beach, a luxurious 12-story, resort-style condominium property in Cape
May County, New Jersey. This sale offers primary and secondary
homebuyers a rare opportunity to purchase two- and three-bedroom
residences in a full-service, amenity rich development for up to 60
percent below summer 2010 list prices. The auction will help determine
true value and re-set prices caused by a supply-demand disequilibrium in
the national housing market following the recession.
Residences available at the auction range in size from approximately
1,822 square feet to more than 2,235 square feet, and all feature
expansive water views, large private verandas and designer-selected
finishes. Minimum reserves for the homes start from just $315,000, and
all winning bidders will receive a storage facility and two parking
spaces. All homeowners have access to an array of amenities, including a
privately owned beach, fitness center and beachfront infinity pool with
spa.
The Grand at Diamond Beach auction event will be held at 1:00 p.m. on
Sun., July 10th at The Water Club at Borgata, located at One
Renaissance Way in Atlantic City. There will be no hidden reserves and
no buyer’s premiums. Advance registration is required, and financing is
available for qualified buyers. Winning bidders will be able to settle
and move in during the 2011 summer season. The on-site auction
information center and model residences are open daily through July 9th,
from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., at 9601 Atlantic Ave. in Diamond Beach,
N.J. Additional information is available at TheGrandAuction.com.
“The Grand at Diamond Beach auction is a great opportunity for buyers to
purchase into one of the most high-end quality properties on the eastern
seaboard at price points that were previously unavailable,” said Jon
Gollinger, East Coast CEO and Co-Founder of Accelerated Marketing
Partners. “There is disequilibrium in the South Jersey market,
particularly in the luxury sector. To bring transparency to buyers and
sellers, The Carlyle Group will empower consumers to determine what they
are comfortable paying for beachfront residences.”
Scott Jenkins, Vice President of The Carlyle Group, the owner of The
Grand at Diamond Beach, added, “The Grand at Diamond Beach is a
remarkable project. From design to construction to the current sales
process, we’ve had one goal: to deliver the highest quality to our
current and future residents.”
Jenkins continued, “However, because of a correction in the national
housing market, accurate pricing for The Grand at Diamond Beach is
unclear. Auctioning a limited number of residences will allow the market
to determine true value. After the auction, we will return to our
traditional sales program better informed, and continue to manage all
aspects of The Grand with the same level of responsibility and
commitment until the final residence is sold. We thank our existing
homeowners for their patience during this process and look forward to
welcoming new homeowners to The Grand.”
The 18 residences available at auction and ready for immediate occupancy
include:
2 two-bedroom-plus-den, two-bath homes that are approximately
1,822 square feet. Both have minimum bids of $315,000, up to 58
percent below summer 2010 list prices, which were as high as $749,000.
15 two-bedroom-plus-den, 2.5-bath homes ranging in size from
approximately 1,856 square feet to 2,075 square feet. Minimum bids
range from $330,000 to $410,000, up to 60 percent below summer 2010
list prices, which were as high as $894,000.
1 three-bedroom-plus-den,three-bath home that is
approximately 2,235 square feet and has a minimum bid of $980,000,
which is 40 percent below its summer 2010 list price of $1.631
million. The home holds a 180-degree shoreline view, as well as a rare
oceanfront corner view in the master bedroom from which one can see
all the way up the coastline.
The well-appointed residences are complete with imported Brazilian maple
or oak hardwood flooring, New Zealand wool carpeting, walk-in closets
and private laundry rooms with full-size washers/dryers. Most homes
feature flexible den spaces that may be converted into a guest room;
doors to these spaces are made with opaque glass to allow natural light
to be let in while still maintaining privacy.
Homeowners at the 125-unit property enjoy access to a 330-foot privately
owned beach and an infinity pool with sprawling hardwood sundeck
furnished by Janus et Cie. There is also a spa tub and separate
children’s pool. The Grand at Diamond Beach also has a community room,
complete with indoor and outdoor furniture and grilling stations, as
well as a fitness center with LifeFitness® equipment, his-and-hers
locker rooms and massage treatment rooms. An activity center for adults
and children features a large flat-panel television with surround sound,
fully automated entertainment system, Crosley CD Jukebox with iPod dock,
pool table and gaming systems. On-site concierge services and security
personnel are available to homeowners as well.
The Grand at Diamond Beach is within close proximity to a wide range of
year-round cultural and recreational attractions, including some of
South Jersey’s best shopping, restaurants and entertainment venues. The
Grand is also just 15 minutes from the highly regarded Cape May National
Club, a golf course surrounding a 50-acre private bird sanctuary. Other
nearby courses include the Avalon Golf Club and Stone Harbor Golf Club.
With the open Atlantic on one side and the protected waters of Delaware
Bay on the other, Diamond Beach can be reached from Philadelphia,
Manhattan and Washington, D.C. in less than a few hours.

Slather on these all-natural DIY face masks to amp up your springtime skin
If you’ve ever considered Marie Kondo-ing your mask collection, but have been worried about getting rid of something you might need some time in the distant future, you’re in luck: You can get many of the same skin-boosting benefits from the products in your pantry as the one’s you’ve been keeping under your sink for the last five years.
DIY moisturizing masks are the best way to give your skin some extra all-natural hydration without having to hoard 200 sheet masks in the bathroom cabinet, mostly because they all utilize things that any wellness-savy person likely already has on hand. And while there are undoubtedly plenty of designer moisturizing masks worth adding to your cart on the interwebs (and then keeping in your beauty cabinet “until you need them”), there’s something to be said about making one of your own.
“You know exactly what’s in the product and at what proportion when you make it yourself,” says Dermatologist Adarsh Vijay Mudgil, MD, medical director of Mudgil Dermatology. “DIY products also generally have fewer ingredients than pre-made ones, which decreases the chances of irritation or allergy.” Plus, they tend to cost approximately a tenth of the price of the stuff you’d find on the shelves.
Read on for some of our favorite DIY moisturizing face masks, because who needs a stocked skin-care collection when you’ve already got a stocked refrigerator? And, if you’re feeling inspired, you can donate all of your unused, unwanted masks here, then get to mixing up some magic.
While honey, watermelon, and potato aren’t exactly three ingredients you would ever want to see together on a plate, they do have some serious skin-boosting properties when they’re combined for the sake of a DIY moisturizing face mask. “These three special ingredients contain the perfect variety of phytonutrients and antioxidants to heal and nourish your skin, restoring it back to health and delivering that perfect glow,” says facialist Ildi Pekar, who’s responsible for the radiant skin of supermodels like Miranda Kerr, Irina Shayk, and Lindsay Ellingson. So while you may not be tempted to eat the questionable combo, you will want to slather it on your face on the reg.
Ingredients1 potato1/2 slice of watermelon2 Tbsp 100 percent raw honey
1. Boil potatoes until soft. Mash or blend until you get a “mashed potato” consistency.2. Blend or crush watermelon and add honey.3. Mix together. Apply evenly on your face and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
When Queer Eye’s Jonathan Van Ness shares any sort of beauty advice, we straighten up and listen—especially when it involves things that we’ve already got lying around in our pantries. His go-to involves oatmeal, which acts as a gentle exfoliant and Manuka honey, which is a known moisturizer, anti-bacterial, and acne-fighting agent that he says “promotes skin healing even more than normal honey would.” That’s it!
IngredientsOatmealManuka honey
1. Pass oats through a food processor to grind them into smaller grains2. Mix them with enough Manuka honey to “create a paste”3. Leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse off with warm water.
You’re likely familiar with aloe’s calming properties when it comes to treating sunburns, but what you may not know is that the ultra-moisturizing ingredient can be used to help you deal with other skin conditions, too. “Aloe vera speeds up your skin’s ability to heal and it’s a great moisturizer,” says Adina Grigore, skin-care guru and founder of S.W. Basics. “It also fights inflammation and it’s high in antioxidants.” Plus, it helps to reduce heat, which makes it a great anti-inflammatory option (and thus, sunburn treatment).
Ingredients1 Tbsp S.W. Basics Aloe Vera Powder1⁄2 Tbsp Manuka honey2 to 3 drops lavender essential oil
1. Place the aloe, honey, and lavender oil in a small bowl and stir well so that the honey melts into the aloe and lavender.2. Apply with clean hands to entire face.3. Leave on for a few minutes up to a half hour. Store extra mask in a jar with a lid—it will last a few months.4. Rinse for a glow.
You can shop celeb facialist Joanna Vargas’ products online, or you can DIY one of her favorite masks all on your own. Her pumpkin face mask is high in antioxidants like vitamin A, C, and E, and is packed with enzymes to help slough away dead skin to leave your complexion glowing. Plus, sweet potato is rich in beta-carotene to fight free-radical damage and promote cell turnover, yogurt has probiotics, honey helps to moisturize skin, and cinnamon ramps up circulation and acts as an antibacterial to help squelch acne. TLDR? Pumpkin may seem like a seasonal ingredient, but you can use this DIY moisturizing face mask all year round.
Ingredients1/2 oz. pumpkin1/2 oz. sweet potato1 tsp honey1 Tbsp Greek yogurt1 pinch of cinnamon
1. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl.2. Apply to damp skin and leave on for 10 minutes.3. Rinse with tepid water and a muslin cloth.
Leave it to a Victoria’s Secret angel to know how to get a runway-worthy glow with the same ingredients you’d usually use to make a smoothie. “When you do your groceries, just buy a little extra for your beauty routine,” she says of the trick behind her go-to DIY moisturizing face mask. “Brazilians love to have a tan, but after the sun, your skin is tired, and you want to have a glow, so this [face mask] is going to help a lot.” It combines unsweetened acai, avocado, mashed-up strawberries, and honey, which offer up the perfect blend of antioxidants (fun fact: strawberries are a great source of vitamin C) and moisturization.
IngredientsUnsweetened açaiAvocadoMashed-up strawberriesHoney
1. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl.2. Apply to damp skin on face and neck, leave on for 5 minutes.3. Rinse with water.
Avocado isn’t just great for spreading onto toast—it’s also great for calming and moisturizing skin. “Avocado is rich in antioxidants and healthy fats,” says Dr. Mudgil. “This helps your skin cells fight toxins and stay hydrated.” This is why you’ll frequently see it in sleep masks and moisturizers, but instead of pouring out the big bucks on fancy products, grab the other half of your lunchtime salad topper and slather it on your skin.
Ingredients1/3 to 1/2 of an avocado2 to 3 tablespoons of yogurt1 teaspoon of honey
1. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl.2. Apply to damp skin on face and neck, leave on for 10-15 minutes (or until it dries out)3. Rinse with warm water.
If making a DIY moisturizing face mask isn’t quite your thing, here are all the ways to integrate fruit into your skin-care routine without actually having to mash it up yourself. And here’s the one sneaky vitamin you never knew you needed in your AM + PM regimen.

One of the most concerning issues you will confront when utilizing a warmed hair styling device is overheating. We've all been there: you're coolly fixing your hair when an especially clever scene comes up on the show you have playing out of sight. Following a strong moment or two of chuckling, you understand (in absolute loathsomeness!) that your poor hair has been sandwiched in the middle of two or three hot plates the whole time.
That is the point at which it occurs; the greatest magnificence dread for ladies the world more than: a lump of your stunning hair severs… and all in light of excessively much warmth… .

F1 champ Hamilton avoided millions in private jet taxes
Lewis Hamilton was all hat and F1 2017 champion after he won the U.S. Grand Prix in Austin TX on Oct 29 2017. That was the race where the U.K. driver earned enough points to take another title. A few days later, Hamilton's name showed up in the Paradise Papers as one of the rich and famous individuals around the world who uses questionable tax shelters. (Photo courtesy Formula1.com)
Formula 1's final race of the year was today in Abu Dhabi (no spoiler here unless you click the link), ending the 2017 season in which Lewis Hamilton claimed the motorsports' series championship for the fourth time.
But that's not the only thing at which Great Britain's favorite auto racer excels. Hamilton also appears to be a champ at, according to the Paradise Papers, avoiding taxes.
Outing offshore tax shelters for the rich: The Paradise Papers are the latest massive trove of documents to detail the ways in which the world's richest people shelter their income and assets from scrutiny and taxation.
Don't be confused by the Panama Papers, a similar financial document release in 2016 that also revealed questionable tax haven maneuvers of the wealthy.
The current Paradise Papers are 13.4 million confidential electronic documents taken from the offshore law firm Appleby and corporate services provider Estera. This latest collection of financial information was leaked to the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung, which then shared them with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. ICIJ started releasing the document to the public on Nov. 5.
Hamilton's name showed up in the material alongside the Queen of England, musical royalty Bono and Madonna and U.S. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross.
A championship tax maneuver: As for F1's dominant driver, British media report that Hamilton avoided a £3.3 million ($3.94 million U.S.) value added tax (VAT) on his £16.5 million ($19.7 million U.S.) Bombardier Challenger 605 luxury jet he imported in 2013 into the tax haven Isle of Man.
That's a lot of pounds (or dollars here in the United States) from which to choose, but since this is a tax blog, the £3.3 million in refunded VAT is this week's By the Numbers figure.
It appears a leasing deal set up by advisers was artificial and did not comply with a European Union and United Kingdom ban on VAT refunds for private use, although Hamilton might have been entitled to the tax relief on business grounds, according to a tax attorney who reviewed the arrangement.
A pair of law professors who also looked at the tax move described it as potentially "abusive," saying it doesn't appear to follow European rules. The tax tactic, they say, allowed Hamilton to avoid tax that would otherwise have been due, and that the Manx government did not take the proper steps to collect the VAT owed.
Avoidance alone not illegal: Now's the time where it's important to note that there's a difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion.
Avoidance efforts are not inherently illegal. You can, and should, take whatever legal steps, both here in America and in the United Kingdom, are available through tax loopholes to keep as much of your money out of the hands of your country's tax collector.
However, tax evasion schemes created just to avoid paying due amounts are illegal and are the prime target of tax collectors. The U.K., in fact, is looking to revision its tax system to focus on going after "people who really don't care about playing by the rules."
It's also important to note that whatever the public or tax world's perception of the method used by Hamilton with regard to his luxury air liner's taxes, there's no indication or even a suggestion that the F1 champ was directly involved in creating the scheme. He sought professional advice and followed it.
But to many tax expert eyes, the Hamilton jet deal appears to be so artificial — i.e., created primarily for tax avoidance reasons — that it is open to challenge.
Just following advice: Following the Paradise Papers reveal, Hamilton's team issued a statement saying there was no subterfuge or improper levels of secrecy in connection with the racer's business operations.
"As a global sportsman who pays tax in a large number of countries, Lewis relies upon a team of professional advisers who manage his affairs," according to the statement. "Those advisers have assured Lewis that everything is above board and the matter is now in the hands of his lawyers."
Hey, that argument worked for his IndyCar colleague Helio Castroneves, whose tax evasion case went beyond allegations to actual prosecution, where the Brazilian motorsports star was acquitted.

Megadeth Deliver Thrash Filled and Heartfelt Performance in Boston
Dave Mustaine & Megadeth – House of Blues – Boston, MA – June 25, 2017
Megadeth’s and Metallica’s DNA will forever be intertwined as both bands helped define the thrash and speed metal genre that emerged on both coasts of the United States in the early to mid 1980’s.
There’s also the other obvious connection between Megadeth and Metallica as anyone reading this article is likely more than familiar with the pair’s shared history.
However, it would be short sighted to fixate on the personal history between the two metal titans, as it’s each of these bands’ impact and influence within the world of heavy metal that matters far more.
Hetfield, Ulrich, and Mustaine took the genre of music that Black Sabbath cooked up back in 1970 and added the elements of thrash and speed. In doing so they simultaneously laid down the foundation for aggressive metal to have its place in music for generations to come.
And let’s be honest here, Mustaine likely long ago came to the conclusion that he’ll never be able to completely shake the shadow that Metallica cast over him since his unceremonious ousting from the group and his formation of Megadeth in the aftermath.
Perhaps the Big Four shows a few years back, as well as winning a Grammy after being nominated for the eleventh time this past February for 2016’s Dystopia, finally laid to rest any ill will Mustaine once harbored for his former band.
A peculiar thing though has happened over the course of the last thirty plus years regarding the gap between Metallica and Megadeth in terms of their stature within the metal community amongst the hard line faithful.
There are more than a few old school metal fans that view Metallica as a legacy thrash and speed act that long since abandoned the genre for the riches and global popularity mainstream success have provided them.
Additionally, there could be a valid argument to be made that although Metallica’s first three records could go down as three of the most important albums in heavy metal history, Megadeth’s body of recorded material may very well be superior in overall quality when comparing each bands’ complete discography.
This alteration in the perception of each band could also be attributed in part to the fact that Metallica willfully chose to abandon traditional metal with the release of the self-titled Metallica, otherwise known as the “Black” album, in 1991.
In doing so they opened the door for bands like Megadeth, Slayer and Anthrax to further endear themselves to the hard core thrash audience they were choosing to leave behind.
This condition may be best explained by simply describing how truly divergent the Metallica and Megadeth concert experiences are these days. Although Metallica may play to tens of thousands on any given night, their live shows are at times as much about spectacle and the opportunity to take in a one of a kind visual experience, than they are about the actual music.
Conversely attending a Megadeth concert, such as the show the band recently played to an at capacity House of Blues in Boston, can make one feel as though they’ve been transported back to the thrash heyday of the 1980’s.
Mustaine, long time bandmate and bassist David Ellefson, as well as new comers guitarist Kiko Loureiro and drummer Dirk Verbeuren, delivered a performance in Boston that was not only fiery in every sense of the word, it was also one that came across as deeply sincere and even playful at times.
When Mustaine and company played Megadeth classics such as show opener “Hanger 18”, “Tornado of Souls,” “Peace Sells” and set closer “Holy Wars…. The Punishment Due” the energy inside the venue percolated to an almost voltaic level of intensity.
More than a few circle pits would materialize out of nowhere throughout the course of the evening, while the more sedentary fans would go on to engage in several impromptu sing-a-longs with Mustaine as Megadeth’s post-apocalyptic imagery played behind the band throughout the duration of the performance.
Megadeth’s official mascot Vic Rattlehead even chose to make a few appearances on the night. Rising from out of the shadows initially during Dystopia track “Conquer or Dire” and then again during “Peace Sells.”
The band’s talisman evilly pandered about the stage attempting to engage in mortal combat with band members one moment, while menacingly taunting random fans in the audience the next.
It wouldn’t be a Megadeth show if the irascible Mustaine didn’t engage the crowd in some sort of humorous banter. This time around the front man’s ire would be directed towards a muscle bound head banger that kept interrupting him as he was attempting to tell a story.
At one point the lead singer directly called out the pumped up audience member stating, “I’m waiting for you to shut the fuck up so I can tell a story bro. Go fucking shoot some steroids outside, I don’t care. You don’t have to be quiet, just don’t be a dick.”
Mustaine then went on to spin a yarn about how he and Ellefson had played a show in Northern Ireland a long time ago and that during the concert he apparently at one point had said to the audience before slugging down a Guinness, “Give Ireland back to the Irish, this one is for the cause.”
The “cause” of course being a reference to the ideology of Irish Repulicanism, a topic that most Irish residents don’t take all too lightly today, let alone back in the much more volatile and active IRA days of the 1980’s.
The “cause” is also a deeply personal Irish issue as it cuts across political, religious, and even ancestral lines in Ireland. In other words it’s subject matter that may be best left to those in Ireland to debate, or even toast, versus the lead singer of a thrash metal band from across the pond.
Well apparently Mustaine’s political and semi-quasi religious musings didn’t go over too well as the following morning he was informed by Ellefson that they had to be escorted out of the city in a bullet proof van the night previous because of his ramblings.
According to Mustaine the incident inspired him to pen one of Megadeth’s most revered songs the very next day, “Holy Wars,” which the band would go on to play next and the track that would also serve as the concert’s swan song.
It should be noted that the newer Megadeth material played on the evening, which included songs such as “Fatal Illusion,” Poisonous Shadows” and “Dystopia,” all fit in nicely with the classics.
These more recent tracks seamlessly blended into the overall pacing of the set quite nicely while also giving fans reasons to believe that Megadeth has more than a few resplendent records up their sleeves before they may call it quits someday.
It’s also worth mentioning the rejuvenated vigor in which Megadeth seem to be playing with on this current tour cycle. Perhaps this resurgence can be attributed to somewhat of a return to form in terms of the band’s recorded material.
2016’s Dystopia is a more aphotic and heavier record with the album aligning more sonically with Megadeth staples such as “So Far, So Good…. So What!” and “Rust in Peace.”
Additionally, new band members Louriero and Verbeuren, both of whom were brought into the fold by Mustaine following the unexpected departures of both guitarist Chris Broderick and drummer and Shawn Drover back in 2014, have breathed new life into the band’s live shows.
Louriero is not your typical snarl in place, look evil and play killer riffs type of metal axe slinger. Instead the Brazilian guitarist is a whirling dervish of riff ferocity and hyper activity.
Louriero as it turns out is the perfect foil for the more stoic Mustaine, as his Tasmanian Devil guitar stylings are not only technically jaw dropping, his energy on stage draws the audience that much further into Megadeth’s evil sonic web.
Drummer Dirk Verbeuren, primarily known for his time in Swedish death metal stalwarts Soilwork, is as entertaining as any metal drummer out there touring day and much like every player in Megadeth, the Belgian’s level of musicianship is beyond reproach.
There’s just something about Verbeuren’s play style, mechanics and sound that seem reminiscent of classic Megadeth era drummer Nick Menza. Perhaps this a figment of on an overworked imagination or maybe Verbeuren’s just the right fit for Megadeth on numerous levels, similarly to the way Brooks Wackerman seemed destined to become Avenged Sevenfold’s new drummer.
Even long time Megadeth bassist Ellefson, as well as Mustaine himself, seem to both be playing with an amped up, almost youthful enthusiasm on this current tour run. And really how could the pair not be excited right now?
Dystopia was critically well received by the music industry and the fans, the Recording Academy recognized the album via awarding it the Grammy for Best Metal Performance this past year and fans are also still coming out in droves to see Megadeth perform live.
All of this could lead some to conclude that Megadeth may actually be morphing into a more positive, more accessible and dare I say, more affable band. Oh the horror.
Should this sentiment actually hold true it may be wise to never let Mustaine in on the secret. A metal world without an at least sometimes acerbic Mustaine would likely be one none of us would want to live in.
The biggest takeaways from Megadeth’s performance in Boston this past weekend may be rooted in the simplistic. The connections fans made with one another, with the band onstage and ultimately with the music itself are the exact elements that combine to make the heavy metal community’s bonds with one another so concrete and so ever lasting.
And that right there may be the essence of what separates a band like Megadeth from a band like Metallica as both bands approach their 40th year in existence.
Megadeth’s live performances still have this uncanny ability to make those in attendance feel like the angst riddled teenagers that would steal ten dollars from their mom’s purse to buy a cassette copy of Killing Is My Business… And Business is Good from their local Strawberries or Tape World.
The band’s concerts also continue to bond friends, family and strangers in ways that we all seemed to be able to do more effortlessly before mortgages, ISIS and other real world impediments became barriers to our being able to do something as trivial as banging our heads to evil riffs.
I suppose at the end of the day is there any greater gift that music bestows upon the world than providing its inhabitants with the opportunity to make them feel like kids again?
Hats off to Megadeth for reminding everyone in Boston that it’s still okay for adults to crash and bang into one another while singing songs about end times, corporate greed and social anarchy. Long live Megadeth, long live Dave Mustaine and love live the once and future kings of thrash.
