Ric(hard) Fenton; Part 4
Read on ao3.
Masterpost. Previous.
How had any of them missed this? How had Bruce missed this? Bruce had drowned in guilt when Jason died but this? This is worse — more than surpassing what he felt back then. He knows with certainty that his nightmares will now feature another way too-young — black haired, blue eyed boy.
“And the worst part is that you don’t even remember. Nobody does. Nobody but me,” the boy continues, tucking at his hair with one hand. “So in the end, it might as well not have happened.”
He lets go of the hem of his shirt, covering most of the scars but Bruce's gaze keeps lingering on the edges of them — the raised skin a stark contrast to the boy’s paleness.
“And well that’s just like it isn’t it — good old, forgotten Danny,” Danny chuckles, voice bitter. “Operative O was right — what do my parents need me for, now that Ric is here? I’ll always be too awkward, too dumb, too nervous — too me.”
Tears stream down the boy’s face as he wraps his arms around himself.
“Couldn’t even die right.”
The boy rubs at his face, but the tears don’t stop coming.
“Fuck.” Danny lets out a broken laugh as he looks down at the floor. “This is not how I imagined this to go.”
“I’m sorry.”
Danny gaze snaps back to Bruce and Bruce peels off his cowl, face more open than he normally allows himself. They boy’s eyes blow wide.
“There is nothing more I can offer you than my sincerest apology,” Bruce meets the boy’s gaze unflinching. “We failed you. I can’t change that. But what I can change is how we’ll move forward from this.”
Danny’s eyebrows knit together and Bruce practically can feel the disbelief running from him in waves.
“I just admitted to essentially wiping part of your memories and still you believe me?” Danny questions. “If it had been that easy, why didn’t you do it the first time? Why-” He chokes up and sinks to his knees as he clutches his shirt. “Why did I have to nearly die again for it to happen?”
“Can you show me?” Bruce asks softly after giving the boy a few moments. “What happened?”
Danny’s face twitches and it’s only when he speaks that Bruce realizes it’s out of fear.
“For what?”
“So I never repeat it ever again,” Bruce says as he crouches down, featherlight touch on the boy’s right arm.
Danny glances at the skin contact and breathes in shakily. Then he nods.
And then the memories start pouring in — how the GIW had contacted the Justice League to warn them about a new rogue and they never saw the red flags. Danny’s frightened face as they hunted them down. Their cruel words calling him a villain and blaming him for things he never did. How he had gone unnaturally still, like a puppet whose strings were cut, as they delivered him for detainment to the GIW, his eyes losing their light. How he had looked like a prisoner on death row — grim acceptance on his deathly pale face.
Bruce gasps as his mind struggles to connect the memories with the current reality. Nausea overcomes him as he remembers how they thought that because Danny stopped struggling once they captured him, it signaled that he subconsciously knew he was at fault. The fake sweet words Operative O feeded them when they asked what they would do with the boy (rehabilitation — Bruce wants to punch himself) and neither of them had looked into it further — distracted by another emergency coming up.
They threw Danny to the wolves and let him get tortured — for what? Because they never thought they could be deceived? Hell the government used to label metas as dangerous and unstable— they should have known it was fishy that a previously hidden government branch approached them. Should have never trusted a single word out of their filthy mouths.
No wonder that the boy doesn’t trust Bruce — doesn’t trust the Justice League.
“B? What’s going on? What did you see?” Tim’s voice tears Bruce out of his down spiral.
Bruce pulls out the comm from his ear as other voices chime in, stumbling over themselves in their outrage at hearing the boy’s claims. He looks at Danny with a determined face.
“How can I help?”
Bruce has to support Danny as he staggers through the streets to his family home. He explains the situation as they go, as well as his theory as to why Dick is out cold (they had to leave him in the safety of the warehouse — Bruce doesn’t want to risk the GIW finding out that Danny has help if he uses the Batplane that openly and with what the boy told him about they wanting to head to Gotham after they are finished with Amity Park, it would pull attention to them even more in case some of them escape), although he truthfully admits that he has no idea where Jason went.
They boy stiffens as they are about to cross the street to the Fenton house, Bruce eyeing the machine on top. He quickly pulls them back into the alleyway, Bruce following his lead. A moment later they hear voices and steps coming from the direction they were headed. Bruce can feel Danny’s normally too slow pulse (and hadn’t that been a revelation when Bruce first noticed) quicken into a normal pace from where he still has a hand around the boy’s shoulder as they float closer.
“We searched the building, the other two aren’t there. It must have acted alone,” someone reports and pauses, listening to the response.
“Of course, I’ll set up shifts,” the man dutifully replies and then his tone suddenly changes, annoyed, “He wants us to search every inch of the city.”
A different voice chimes in, “Again? What are we? Goons? And let me guess we won’t be paid for the overtime either?”
The first man scoffs, “Not even that, 100 %, he’ll take the credit for capturing it too, although we were the ones finding it during patrol.”
“Typical.”
Their voices dissipate and Bruce almost doesn’t catch Danny as he staggers, horrified expression on his face.
“They got him,” he states. “They got Jason.”
“Are you sure?”
Danny shakily exhales.
“I- I can feel his ectoplasm around here,” he explains. “They must have monitored the house and caught him by surprise.”
Bruce frowns.
“Is it safe to approach the house then?”
“I’ll make us invisible.”
Before Bruce can disapprove, they already turn invisible. Bruce sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose. Of course Dick would imprint on the boy with the most self-sacrificial streak next to himself to exist. He keeps his mouth shut, although he wants to scold the boy for over-exhausting himself even more — still aware of the distance between the two — he would only make it worse.
The boy steps are surprisingly quiet as they sneak into the house, the boy not pausing even once as they step through the ransacked house into the kitchen and down the basement. It’s only then that he lets the invisibility slip as he lets go of Bruce and steps over the chaos straight to a cabinet. Bruce glances over the lab, ignoring the swirling green portal although he desperately wants to investigate it, instead stepping up to the computer. There’s a file opened to an invention called the “Ecto-Dejecto”. Danny had been right about Jason being here.
He turns back, only to witness Danny ramming the syringe right into his own arm without flinching as he administers the serum, the green liquid slowly draining. He disregards the first syringe, blood trickling down his arm and is about to do the same with the second one before Bruce stops him.
The boy looks up to him with an obvious question and Bruce takes the serum from Danny’s hands and administers it for him, both of them quiet as he pushes down the thumb rest. As Bruce removes the syringe, there’s only a little drop of blood which he softly wipes away with his thumb
“Thank you,” Danny says quietly and Bruce just grunts. He looks around the lab, eyes trailing to what looks like weapons.
“Do you need anything else?”
Danny shakes his head.
“No real point using those against humans,” he says when he sees where Bruce's gaze is lingering. “Would only give them more munitions.”
“They hurt you?”
It’s not really a question. Danny still answers it as if it is one, wryly, “Yeah, who do you think was the guinea pig?”
Danny must see the disapprovement on his face because he coughs awkwardly.
“What are we working with?”
Bruce lists out his equipment and Danny nods before he informs Bruce of his own powers.
“Invisibility — as you might have noticed — intangibility, flight, ectoplasts, ice…” The list keeps on growing and Bruce blinks at the information. That’s a lot more than he displayed when… when they met for the first time. Normally his mind would swim trying to plan contingencies, but he already hurt the boy enough — there’s no need to conspire more against him.
So at the end, he just nods, cataloging the powers before they leave — once again invisible. The sun is coming up by the time they reach the GIW’s current base of operations.
“We’ll have to be careful,” Danny whispers. “I can’t use too much ectoplasm, they have sensors here. One ability will be the max or else it will pick up that it isn’t just the ambient ectoplasm fluctuating.”
Bruce grunts as they watch the guards rotate, each with a blaster in hand.
“They’ll probably be holding most of the people in the second basement, the third basement is for Ghost containment.”
Bruce hates that the boy knows this information.
“The first basement?” he asks, nevertheless.
“More office spaces,” Danny reports. “The fourth basement is for experiments.”
Bruce closes his eyes, trying to calm himself down.
“Do we have an estimate of the number of guards and agents?”
Bruce can hear the wince in Danny’s voice.
“Only that there are a lot,” he admits and Bruce hums.
They’ll have to use a hit and run tactic then if they don’t wanna fail. He slowly starts to regret not taking any back up with him, but on the other hand this got more complicated than he intended and he wouldn’t want any one of his kids to partake in something so dangerous. (He had told Tim and Oracle that he will be offline for a while before muting the comms.) He barely has accepted the fact that he needs to take Danny with him.
He understands why Dick is so fond of the boy and loathes himself for making Dick believe that he can’t share this with their family. No doubt Danny had told Dick what happened with the Justice League. No wonder he had been strange when he returned, constantly analyzing them.
They strike when the guards are leaving for patrol around the perimeter. Danny drops their invisibility and sticks a hand through the door and opens it from the inside. They slip inside just as the guards circle back.
Bruce uses batarangs to disable cameras as they come across them and lets Danny lead him through the maze of corridors. Soon they come across a locked door. There’s no door handle or an obvious lock other than a scanner of sorts next to the door.
“Shit,” Danny curses. “They changed the keypads to be ghost proof. Short-circuiting will probably sound an alarm. We’ll need a card from one of the scientists, the guards don’t have one on them.”
Clever, Bruce can’t help but think, limiting the access. They must have thought of the possibility of someone trying to infiltrate them.
Suddenly the door opens and it’s only Bruce quick reflexes as he knocks out the scientist saving them getting discovered. They head down the basement and drag the body in one of the open rooms, closing the door. Danny slips them back into invisibility as they hear voices, scientists walking past them and discussing something. The lights flicker and Danny immediately drops the invisibility once they are past them.
“That’s bad,” he says, glancing at the lights as they slowly stabilize again. “They are too sensitive to my ectoplasm. We’ll get found at-”
Sounds of a commotion interrupt Danny. There are a handful of angry screams and Danny bolts before Bruce can stop him, turning the corner. Bruce follows with a curse on his lips, only to almost run into the boy as he suddenly freezes in his path.
There are several unconscious scientists on the floor and he watches as an auburn-haired woman in a hazmat suit karate chops another, the man instantly fainting.
“Mom?” Danny calls out, disbelieving and the woman’s head snaps to them. One of the scientists next to her slumps, revealing a tall man — also in a hazmat suit, who can be no other than Danny’s father as well as who seems to be Danny’s sister. “Dad? Jazz?”
There’s sounds of footsteps behind them and then a sudden heavy thud, and both Danny and Bruce twirl around. Dick is standing above one of the scientists, with his escrima sticks in his hands, grin bloodthirsty.
“RIC?”

DPXDC AU: Bludhaven's Hero/ Sugar baby Dick!
For whatever reason, Danny flees to Bludhaven instead of Gotham after something in Amity Park gone wrong, and since Gotham is the next ecto-rich area, Danny avoids that. (And since Bludhaven is supposed to be worse than Gotham,well...)
Danny coincidentally arrives to Blud around the same time that Dick does. Danny does visit Gotham to see his sister as she is registered as Fenton in University.
As Danny is legally registered as a Nightengale, taken under Clockwork's wing, he needs to be surrounded by new people. (Sort of like accidental crime lord Au Danny, but for Bludhaven, but with the violence of threats.)
Most cannon shit happens to Dick, but at some point, Dick starts getting to know Danny. They live nearby to where Dick lives and is an all-around helper to the community.
Danny sort of vigilantes as a cryptid as a back-up for Dick sometimes as good cop, worse cop situation. Danny works as Dick's gear maker, patch up buddy, and informant for Dick's nightly activities.
Danny helps out when Slade threatens to bomb Blud with Chemo, when Blockbuster starts hunting out Dick with Tarantula, when the Court of owls attacks, when *Ric* happens,etc...
In fact, when Tarantula attempts to SA Nightwing, she gets shot through her shoulders so that she can't do this shit again and can't be a vigilante or makes it difficult for her to continue it.
When Dick starts dating Danny, they decide to move in together in Danny's space and use Dick place as a safehouse. Danny also convinces Dick to be a private detective instead of a cop, as he could see it wear him down. Or at least he sees that Dick in Law enforcement is unhappy.
In fact, Dick and Danny only come out to Dick's family after they have been together for a few years, and Dick has Haley and Danny has Ellie after a de-aging and DNA melting mishap.(But, before Bruce kicks it in the time stream)

Creepy sentence prompt
Part 1 Part 2 - Fic where sleep deprived Danny and Dani catch Klarion. Has the prompt attached.
Hogwarts Escape Room - The entire extended Justice League gets transported to a Hogwarts themed escape room and the Shazamily are the only ones that remember that fact. Edit: Might re-write this so I'm not using terf content. I haven't kept up with the Harry Potter bs and didn't realize it was that problematic until a few hours after it posted. The reason I'm leaving it as-is is because where this prompt takes place isn't too integral to the plot, but I haven't found a suitable replacement yet as it (preferably) still needs magic school ties. If anyone has suggestions, please let me know.
Batboys Boyband
Bounty Hunter DCxDP - Danny's a bounty hunter and he and his bounties run into DC heroes and villains.

Sleepy Time - Jazz, Sam, and Tucker force Danny to go to sleep. The Justice League freak out.
Dragons and Ghost - Batman's a dragon. Danny is a (half) ghost. The two are surprisingly similar.
How Monarchs are Chosen - Ghost King Danny. Dani's next in line. (I might add more in the future)

Masterpost. Next.
“B, didn’t you promise us as you’d tell if there was a possibility of another secret child?” Tim asks as he stares at the black haired boy, who looks like he had been to hell and back to get here, with blue eyes — because of course, they are blue — in front of the Manor’s door.
He can’t help but feel unnerved by the way the boy evaded their security measures and how he hasn’t said a single word since Tim opened the door even when he can see the boy’s hands tremble.
“Yes?” Bruce's voice floats from further in the Manor, his barely audible gaunt drawing near.
“Then who the hell is this?” he asks just as the man turns the corner. He freezes at the sight of the kid, literally blue screening as he takes him in.
“Actually he’s mine,” a too chipper voice announces and Tim nearly jumps out of skin as he turns to Dick.
The young man must see both Tim and Bruce doing the mental calculations in their heads because he interrupts before they can draw the wrong conclusions.
“If Bruce can go around adopting children, I can do the same.” Then he turns to the boy. “You can come in, Danny.”
Tim is eerily reminded of a wary, frightened cat as the boy — Danny moves inside. His steps are too silent for a mere civilian.
Bruce and Tim share a look and Tim knows that they are both asking themselves when Dick met the boy and why he never mentioned him with how familiar he acts around him as he easily tucks him into his side.
Although neither of them wants to accept it, Dick has changed since the one year where he disappeared without a trace. He’d told them that he was shot leading to him to lose his memories and that he only retained his memories a few days before he came back, but Tim always had a feeling the older man was not telling the whole truth, hiding it behind an easy-going smile. He didn’t speak a single word about what happened during that year, claiming he didn’t remember much of it ever since his memories returned.
Not only that, but it had become even rarer than before that any of them would meet Dick at the manor (even Jason was at the Manor more often) — and when he was present he was always studying them with an intense stare as if he was searching for something in their expressions.
“Dick,” Bruce starts but the man waves him off.
“Later,” he says. “I need to see if I have any fresh clothes for Danny.”
Dick pulls the boy away and they head up the stairs. Tim gives it a minute before he follows, nodding at Bruce, who does the same. He hears them stop in the hallway and he pauses in his steps.
“What’s going on?” Tim hears the man's question and he sneaks closer when he can’t hear the boy’s response. He subtly uses his phone’s camera to peek around the corner.
“What about Mom and Dad?” Dick asks in a hushed whisper and Tim knits his eyebrows together — confused about who his brother is talking about.
Danny winces with a pained expression.
“The GIW got them in custody for affiliating with and aiding an ectoplasmic entity,” he explains. “You are my only chance.”
“Jazz, Sam, Tucker?” Dick almost seems desperate and when the boy just shakes his head after each name, he runs a hand through his hair and curses.
“And you are sure we can’t go to them?”
Tim can’t help but ask himself who they are talking about that Dick’s voice is so full of disdain. Danny vehemently shakes his head, eyes squeezed together like he is remembering something painful and when he speaks his voice is shaky.
“I don’t know what to do, Ric,” he says, clutching the top of his shirt like his heart is hurting and Tim’s eyebrows climb to the top of his hairline at the unusual nickname. “I can’t- I can’t do this alone…”
“Fuck.” Dick takes a deep breath as he hugs Danny. “Okay. Yes, of course I’m coming with you, baby ghost. Just let me grab my things and then we’ll go on our way.”
“You will not go anywhere.”
Bruce steps in Dick’s path before Tim can stop him and he narrows his eyes at the pair. Danny flinches away from the man and Dick steps protectively in front of the boy.
Tim knows Bruce and Dick had their rough patches in the past but never like this. Never had Dick looked at Bruce like he was a threat.
“I’m not in the mood, B,” Dick warns sharply.
“And I’m not about to let you go off with someone that I haven’t vetted.”
Dick lets out a bitter huff of a laugh.
“Of course that’s the only thing you would focus on.” His voice is cold. “You’ll bulldoze your way through, and prod and condemn, not caring if you hurt someone innocent in the process as long as you can justify your actions. I don’t even know why I’m surprised at this point. It’s what happened to Jason after all.”
Bruce reels back like he’s been punched.
“Now if that is all, I have to go save the people who actually treat me like family.”
This time nobody stops Dick as he leaves the house, Danny in tow.
“Master Bruce, Master Tim,” Alfred’s voice tears Tim out of his trance and startles Bruce who froze in his spot. “Where is Master Dick?”
Dick trembles with barely suppressed fury as he leads Danny to his car.
He wanted to believe that Bruce was better — that he wouldn’t have led the Justice League on a hunt after a child, but the longer he is back in Gotham as Richard Grayson — the longer he is around who were supposed to be his “actual” family, the more he grows unsure about that fact. There is no easy trust between them — not the steadfast determination that no matter what happens, they’ll take his side. Not like the Fentons have. (It’s been barely 2 months and he misses being Ric Fenton — misses being Jack and Maddie’s son and Jazz and Danny’s older brother.)
Bruce has contingency plans about them for fuck’s sake. And while he understands that there might be situations where they would be on other sides — the time where he and the Teen Titans had to fight their mind controlled mentors comes to mind — it’s a scary thought. For the first time since ages — since Bruce had taken Robin away from him — he feels like he is on his own.
Back then he had turned to Clark — to Superman. He was the one who gave him the name Nightwing but Dick is plagued by the nightmares he witnessed Danny having. He doesn’t think he can look at his uncle ever the same again.
At the same time, he doesn’t know if Danny and him can do this alone. He glances at the boy as he drives out the gates to the manor — he looks incredibly drained. He’s even paler than usual and there’s a sheen of sweat over his whole body as he leans back in his seat, breaths shallow.
As he drives through the streets of the Bowery a sudden thought comes to his mind. He tears the steering wheel around, tearing Danny out of his doze. He blinks at Dick, eyebrows knitted together when he sees that they are still in Gotham.
“Where are we going?” he asks and Dick gives him a smile that is all teeth.
“Just a little pit stop.”
Jason and Dick don’t talk much — or to be more precise they don’t talk about the important stuff. Not about the — ‘I broke down when I heard about your death and I blame myself for not being there’ or ‘I was sure you hated me and you were glad I was gone’. They barge into each other's apartments, spar or get drunk together and cling to each other when they are sure the other isn’t awake to witness it. It’s not quite healthy — but it’s something better than when Jason was still Robin.
So when the door to one of his safe houses gets slammed open, Jason isn’t concerned. He knows Dick had been off the past few weeks and had been expecting his visit for quite a while now.
The look in Dick’s eyes is different this time around though. It’s not quite the mix of depression coupled with anger he normally expects — it’s something stronger — righteous fury.
“I need your help,” Dick demands before Jason can question what’s going on.
Jason knits his eyebrows together.
“What about Bruce?”
There’s a dark look in the man’s eyes for a moment before it passes and that’s the moment Jason realizes that this something more serious than the usual spats he normally has with B.
“You are the only one I can trust with this.”
He spins around on his heels and is out of the safe house before Jason can blink. Getting a bit impatient and angry about Dick not getting straight to the point and still expecting him to follow — Jason storms out. What he doesn’t expect is the passed out half-dead kid in the passenger seat. A tinge of green enters his vision as he glares at Dick.
“What the hell is going on?”
The story Dick tells as they speed on the highway leaves Jason reeling. If the man’s tone wasn’t carefully monotone as he spoke about Ghosts and an entire town being shifted to a different dimension, Jason would have already declared that Dick finally snapped. He wants to question why he lied to the rest about losing his memories about the year he went missing, but the desperate look he sends him and the way his hands shake on the steering wheel hold him back. It’s only the boy’s quiet snores that have Jason’s volume not climbing above a hiss.
“Are you sure this all happened? That this is real?”
“I was there, Jay,” Dick’s tone leaves no arguments. “I almost watched Danny die, again — fighting Pariah Dark. I would have never forgiven myself if another of my brothers…” He gulps and shakes his head. “I was there this time. I should have made a difference and once again I was helpless”. He slams a fist against the radio, cursing when it turns on, blaring loud music.
He quickly turns the volume down and both of them wait with bated breath as Danny stirs in his seat, before he goes limp again. Dick lets out a deep sigh.
“How do you think I felt once I realized the situation?” Dick questions. “I was in the middle of nowhere with no recollection of who I was. If the Fentons hadn’t found me-” He shakes his head. “Next I know I’m watching a kid fight fucking Ghosts twice his side and getting thrown around like a ragdoll like it’s a normal Tuesday. That shouldn’t happen Jay, it just shouldn’t.”
Jason stays silent.
“And worst of all, I still knew how to fight,” Dick barrels on. “But no matter how much I tried to help Danny and teach him, it was useless because it wasn’t humans or even metas he was up against. How could my moves counter beings that can fly and go intangible and invisible at will?”
Jason still can’t fathom why Dick hid this from them all — but he knows enough to understand why he needs his help.
“So what’s the plan?”
Dick shoots him a relieved smile.
“We still have 12 hours of driving ahead of us,” Dick glances at Danny. “I’m reckoning he’s gonna be out cold for at least half of it if not more. I need you to switch with me after half of the drive so I can get a power nap in, then I’ll take over again.”
“Not trusting me with the car?” Jason teases.
“Show me your drivers license and maybe I’ll reconsider.”
They start bickering, and for a moment Jason can convince himself that this is a normal road trip.
Jason’s at the wheel when the boy wakes up. Dick is out cold and despite the man’s protests Jason can drive normally if he wants to. There’s no reason the man has to over exhaust himself.
They had tossed their phones once they crossed the border to Illinois and Dick had withdrawn a couple of thousand bucks. Jason had questioned why they hadn’t done sooner if they wanted to keep Bruce off their trail, but the man told him he’s not the one he is worried about. Considering what Dick told him about the elusive GIW, Jason can harbor a guess on who he is talking about. It’s after that, that Jason wrangled him into another nap — Dick was in no condition to drive any further.
“Ric?” Danny questions sleepily as he sits up and Jason keeps an eye on him out of the corner of his eyes.
“He’s asleep,” Jason answers and it’s only because he’s used to Damian that he blocks the instinctual kick as the boy realizes he’s not alone.
“I can see that Dick kept you sharp” Jason huffs out a laugh. “I’m Jason, in case he didn’t mention me.”
Danny blinks at him and shifts so he is sitting cross legged. He knits his eyebrows together, clearly thinking.
“You were the pit stop?” he questions.
“Apparently.” Jason shrugs. “Great work, by the way. It’s been a while since I’ve seen Dick this pissed.”
The boy frowns, gnawing at his lips as he stares out the window.
“You’ve died too, haven't you?”
Jason suppresses his initial reaction to snap at the boy. Instead he grits his teeth as he stares straight ahead, the road blurring together.
“And?”
“Ric shouldn’t have let you come.”
He grips the steering wheel until his knuckles are deadly white, green hazing his vision.
“They’ll cut you open too.”
It takes the wind out of his anger and he lets out a curse. The brakes screech as he stops at the side of the road, nearly catapulting them forward with the force of it. Jason finally turns to look at Danny properly. The boy peels down his t-shirt to reveal a gnarly, ugly red Y-shaped scar as he gulps.
“Ric doesn’t know,” he says as he releases the hem of his shirt, covering the scar once more. “I haven’t told him.”
“Then why me?” Jason’s voice rises without his consent.
“Because you’ll get it,” the boy murmurs. “How it feels to die.”
The boy leans back, turning away from Jason to look at the corn field.
“How it haunts you.”
Jason wants to puke and he lets his forehead fall onto the steering wheel.
“Fuck,” he says emotionally and the boy laughs — broken and hysterical. Jason doesn’t comment on the tears streaming down Danny’s face.
Jason starts up the car again, leading the car back on the road.
“Next time Dick asks for my help, I’ll send him to hell.”
Jason hides a smile when the boy snorts at that.
Dick comes to himself as they are about to cross the border into Amity Park. Jason and Danny are quietly talking and he wipes away a little bit of drool as he sits up. It’s dark outside and Danny directs Jason as they enter the city. He leans forward as he enters the conversation.
“You’ll think the GIW’s detectors will sense us?”
Danny glances at Jason, before he turns his attention to Dick.
“We should be fine for a few hours at least as long as I don’t have to turn ghost,” he says. “Half of the town is liminal at this point so you and Jason shouldn’t raise any alarms either. They had too many false alarms in the months since you left.”
Jason looks at Dick strangely once they park where they can hide for the night.
“Since when did you have contact with Lazarus Pits?”
“Never,” Dick retorts. “But living above a portal to the Infinite Realms for a year will do the trick.”
Jason's face scrunches up.
“Who the hell builds a portal in their own basement?”
Both Dick and Danny snort.
“Gotta love Mom and Dad,” the boy says as Dick nods in agreement. “Only they are insane enough.”
Dick makes a face.
“I could do without reanimated meatloaf for the rest of my life though.”
“Don’t remind me,” Danny shudders.
Jason stares at them in bafflement.
“You do know how crazy that sounds?”
“Crazier than Ghosts?” Danny questions with a smirk and Jason pinches the bridge of his nose, shaking his head
“To give it to Mom and Dad they did stop storing samples in the fridge after we lectured them about it,” Dick adds. At Jason's aghast face he just shrugs. “They are passionate about their work.”
“Insane, absolutely insane,” the man mutters and Dick suppresses a smile.
It had taken him a bit to get used to the Fenton's and their flavor of insanity and chaos. At first he had been worried about them being neglectful at best, but it turns out that they just needed someone to remind them when they got into “hyperfixation” mode. He and Jazz had to stage an intervention and both Maddie and Jack were embarrassed once they realized they took it too far. Dick doesn’t know who is worse — them or Tim when he’s awake for more than three days.
He was very relieved when his initial hunch didn’t turn out to be true after Danny revealed himself as Phantom to his parents. They did a whole 180 on their research, focusing on learning about the intricacies of the Infinite Realms, their culture and even politics instead — resigning from their high positions in the GIW. That’s when the trouble really started.
Dick hadn’t lied about getting amnesia after he was shot and it was also true that his memories had only returned — thanks to Frostbite — two months ago. But the only reason he went back to Gotham had been to get Danny help (the longer they waited the worse the situation with the GIW became) — to find out if the Justice League could be trusted. Once he heard what happened with Freakshow and the Reality Gauntlet (and had the memories to properly realize what that meant) he had been horrified. He had given himself a deadline to — if need be, confront the Justice League by the time Danny’s birthday came around and find out the truth. (He had desperately hoped that this was all a misunderstanding, but Bruce’s words still taste bitter on his tongue.)
Dick knows bringing Jason along was a risk — considering Danny’s theory that the Lazarus Pit were corrupted ectoplasm, but they need the manpower to get through the GIW’s defenses. Even if he’s scared shitless about what they’ll do to Jason when they find out just how liminal he is. He knows this is a death mission. But it doesn’t have to be for Jason.
“We need to establish some ground rules,” Dick says reluctantly and Jason narrows his eyes at the wording.
“If we get captured, I want you to save yourself, Jason.” Jason scoffs and Dick raises a hand, silencing his retort before it can come. “I’m the sole reason you got involved in the first place. Me and Danny may be willing to die for them, but I’m not letting you sacrifice yourself for something that isn’t even your problem to deal with.”
“If you think I’m gonna agree to those, you are more than stupid than I thought Dick,” Jason’s voice is scathing. “It started being my problem when you came to me for help and we drove for 12 straight hours to get there. If you say those people are your family — then they are mine as well.”
His lips perk into a smirk.
“Besides, I want to meet the people that might be even more batshit insane than B and got you to call them Mom and Dad.”
Dick flushes slightly — the Fenton’s had always insisted on him calling them Mom and Dad and he doesn’t know when the titles became genuine. Even with his memories restored, Ric Fenton feels more alive — more loved — than Richard Grayson ever did.
Danny just shrugs as he leans back, arms crossed behind his neck and feet rested on top of the glove box.
“I guess I have not only two sisters but two older brothers now,” he adds cheekily.
“Brat.”
Jason playfully shoves Danny and Dick gapes at the fond tone in his voice.
“How?” he stammers — they should barely know each other. “When?”
Jason tucks Danny into his side, angle a bit awkward, but grinning as he ruffles his hair.
“You missed a lot, sleeping beauty,” Jason jests and Dick groans.
“I was only asleep for 1 hour!” he bemoans.
“Two,” Danny corrects and Dick glares at him, raising a finger.
“Don’t you two dare gang up on me!”
“This is sweet revenge for when you and Jazz teamed up against me,” Danny grins.
“We were literally trying to help you!” Dick complains, shoving Danny’s face away as the boy cackles, Jason watching on with amusement.
Dick might have to leave Ric Fenton behind for good now that his two worlds have collided, but maybe he can still be Richard “Dick” Grayson-Fenton instead.

Ric(hard) Fenton; Part 2
Read on ao3.
Masterpost. Previous. Next.
Bruce is many things — a son, an orphan, Gotham’s prince, a vigilante — but he knows that he isn’t a good father. He wants to be — he loves his children fiercely but there are too many unspoken words between them for Bruce to be a truly good father to them. But never more did Bruce believe that than when Dick stormed out of the Manor calling someone else his family.
He and Dick argued often — always had butted heads — to be honest ever since Dick stopped being his Robin. It had only been many, many years later that Bruce realized that ever since leaving his shadow Dick had blossomed — that he had just been a dead weight holding the young man down.
After Jason died due to his mistakes, he had been hellbent on never having another Robin again. When Alfred had put up the memorial, claiming he wouldn’t let Bruce forget, he had gritted his teeth but persisted through his anger, trying to not let his guilt drown him. But when Alfred sent Tim after him with a costume that would always be stained with blood in his mind — he had been furious. He hadn’t been fair with the boy, lashing out at him, being harsh in hopes that he would give up. But Tim had been stubborn — probably even more than Bruce himself. It’s only now that Bruce can admit to himself that the boy saved him from himself.
“Well that went well,” Tim says sarcastically once they updated Alfred on the situation. He leans back in his seat in front of the Batcomputer.
Bruce lets out a grunt as he looks over his shoulder as they try to find out who Danny is. So far no luck. They are running facial recognition software but Bruce has a feeling they won’t get any results there either.
“He must have met him during the year he went missing,” Tim concludes. “That’s the only explanation.”
Bruce can’t argue against that logic, although he doesn’t like what it implies. (Bruce had hoped that despite their disagreements, there would always be trust between them. That no matter what, they would be on the same side. Nothing burns more than the knowledge that he failed.)
He stares at the map pinging Dick’s location every so often — he is moving west, about to cross the border into Pennsylvania. The only thing they can do now is wait and see where the man is going. Bruce sits in the chair next to Tim and settles in for a long day.
Tim makes a breakthrough almost 12 hours later. It has been two hours since Dick’s signal dropped after he reached the border of Illinois and 6 hours since they realized Jason apparently followed him wherever the hell is going.
Tim drums his fingers next to the keyboard, impatient as the software runs. At this point the intention to find out more about Danny isn’t about concern for Dick anymore, it’s about pure spite — and the need to know. Everybody has a digital footprint no matter how small. It shouldn’t be so hard to find a single kid.
When the software pings with a result he almost topples his chair with how fast he stands up. There’s a match with the key words ‘GIW, Danny and Ric’ and Tim’s stomach drops as he scans the information. He taps his earpiece, interrupting Oracle as she briefs B and Robin who are about to start their patrol.
“I found him,” Tim says, voice shaking. “You’ll wanna see this.”
They need to go help Dick and that fast.
It feels too quiet as they traverse through Amity Park on foot — and Jason can’t help but be on edge. He’s too used to the night in Gotham and its rowdy streets. The distant sound of bullets raining and the howling of police cars. Drugs deals around the corner, while the working girls wait on the sides of the streets in groups for drunken stragglers. Gotham is alive at night — but Amity Park? It feels like a Ghost Town in more ways than one. Even Smallville, despite being in the rural parts of Kansas, had held more life when Dick had convinced Jason to visit the Kent Farm one time.
Jason feels baffled that all the events Dick had told him about flew under the radar. Shouldn’t an entire town disappearing get noticed by someone other than its residents — or at least the Justice League? If the town vanished into nothingness once more, would anyone remember it? He doesn’t like that the answer seems to be no.
Jason forms the rear as Dick and Danny chat in front, voices barely above a whisper as they discuss something. Jason knows he probably should listen as Danny updates Dick on the intricacies of what he missed since he was gone — voice serious, but he can’t help but keep an eye out, gaze trailing the rooftops — old habits die hard after all.
It doesn’t take long for Jason to notice that they are being followed. The only reason Jason hasn’t warned Danny and Dick yet is because it’s nothing more than a small blob shaped green ball. Jason trails it in the corner of his eyes as it stays far enough to be barely seen but close enough to not lose them.
Dick and Danny had briefed him on most Ghost Types — and Jason still has to blink away the green when he remembers that Danny admitted that he had his own roster of “rogues” to deal with. Jason has to admit that there were a lot more than he imagined — other than the stereotypical ones from movies — and he’d seen himself in the description of a Revenant. That’s why he knows this must be a Blob Ghost — which according to Danny and Dick — were pretty harmless and kind of dumb most of the time, acting on instincts and emotions rather than conscious thought. But that still doesn’t explain why it would follow them.
It darts in and out of view and Jason has to admit it’s kind of adorable. Dick and Danny must have noticed that he is distracted because they stop and Jason almost walks into them.
Jason instantly notices something is wrong when there isn’t a quip from either of them about his inattention — instead they both look horrified. Jason doesn’t understand why until the blob ghost is suddenly next to them and its emotions almost overwhelm Jason.
Scared. Not safe. Hide. Danger. Danger!
It’s only Danny’s quick reaction as he tackles Jason out of the way that prevents him from being a splat on the ground as a blast hits the position where he had been standing, leaving a smoking crater.
“Well, well, well. Look who crawled back?” a cruel voice taunts and Jason sees Dick stiffening as they get surrounded by agents in white suits. “And it even brought us a present! And here I thought we would need to find ourselves a new shiny plaything.”
“Operative O,” Danny’s hisses, an almost animalistic growl escaping his throat.
“Already showing your real nature, I see,” Operative O’s voice is mocking.
“Operative O, don’t aggravate it further before we have it safely captured,” another agent reprimands, holding some kind of blaster and Jason sees green, only Danny’s warning hand on his shoulder keeping him from retaliating.
“It’s just — here I was worried it wouldn’t fall in our trap without dear old Ricky in our grasp, but it seems I worried for nothing,” Operative O laughs but the only thing Jason hears is Joker’s laugh as the man beats him to half to death with the crowbar.
Jason grits his teeth, shaking his head to force the memory away. He’s not in Ethiopia. These are not his demons — he has no right losing himself here. And like hell he is gonna let Danny and Dick face them alone.
Jason notices he must have missed something because suddenly the two agents who had spoken up are way too close and Danny and Dick both are frozen next to him — neither even saying a word or doing anything despite it.
“Imagine my surprise when we turned up at the Fentons and you weren’t there.” Operative O slides an arm around Dick’s shoulders forcing him to bend a little as he murmurs the next words into his ear — Dick trembles in his hold and Jason’s vision flashes green. “Made it super easy for us.”
“Get your paws off my brother!” Danny snarls, lashing out but stopping short when the agent uses Dick as a meat child.
“Now let’s not be unreasonable, shall we?” Operative O says, releasing Dick and holding up his hands in the air. He circles them, grin sharp. “I’m not cruel after all. Let's say Phantom and the other feisty one, I saw those green eyes — in exchange for the rest — a fair deal, is it not? What do you say Ricky?”
Jason can hear Dick’s jaw crack from how hard the man grits his teeth.
“After all the Fenton’s got you to replace Phantom now. A lot better than a corpse if you ask me.”
Dick growls and decks the man hard in the face as he leans into his space once again. Operative O just laughs maniacally as he stumbles at the force of it, spitting blood on the ground and wiping his nose with the sleeve of his suit, staining it red.
“There it is,” he says gleefully. “That’s what I wanted to see.”
Dick is panting and to Jason’s shock his eyes are a burning, pulsing green as he glares at the agent.
“I’ll wonder how long it’ll take you to scream, hm Ricky boy,” Operative O ponders sadistically. “I hope you’ll hold out longer than Phantom at least. Makes it more fun to break them.”
“Are you done, Operative O?” the other agent interrupts, impatient. “Other people have places to be.”
“What’s the rush, Operative K?” Operative O muses, flicking the blood dripping from his face off his hand. “It’s not like there’s anyone to interrupt us.”
Operative K narrows his eyes at his partner.
“The higher-ups wanted us to be done with this 2 months ago,” he reminds. “The sooner we get done here, the sooner we can get the hell out of this cursed town.”
“As if Gotham will be better,” Operative O scoffs and it takes all of Jason’s willpower to not react at the name drop. “Overflowing with all those pests — starting with that infuriating Bat and its birds.”
He hums, clearly deep in thought.
“Although I always wanted to clip a bird’s wings and see if they can still fly.”
Operative K rolls his eyes, clearly fed up with his partner’s behavior.
“I should have switched with Operative L when I had the chance.”
“Hey, I still get the job done, don’t I?” Operative O pouts and Jason wants to claw the expression of the man’s face. “They have to die sooner or later anyway.”
Operative K sighs but just shakes his head before he directs his attention back to the agents still surrounding them.
“Capture them.”
Jason stands up, not about to let them do whatever they want and for once gladly letting the Pit Rage consume him, but before he can even do one step, Danny writhes on the ground next to him, screaming as electricity continues to shock him. Drool drips from the corner of his mouth as he seizes and his screaming gets hoarse. And Jason — Jason just stands there. It's like his muscles have turned into lead and he can’t move his limbs one inch as he stares at Danny convulsing.
Fuck, he knew this was gonna be bad when Danny had showed him his scars. But he hadn’t thought of the chance that they would fail before they even tried. Jason feels helpless and it’s like Ethiopia all over again. Only this time he wishes the screams he hears would come from him.
“Enough!” Dick roars as Danny starts foaming at his mouth and tearing Jason out of his daze. “What the hell do you want from us?”
Danny’s eyes roll back in his skull as the shocks stop and Operative O uses a blaster to lift Dick’s chin, forcing him to look at him as he smirks.
“Beg.” His smirk stretches into a blood lusty smile as Dick gulps, his hands spasming at his sides. “Maybe you’ll convince me.”
At the same time as Dick throws down a smoke bomb, Jason grabs his gun in one smooth moment from the holster hidden above his foot and shoots the man point blank between the eyes. The space fills with smoke as Operative O drops to the ground — hopefully dead — and Jason quickly helps Dick with carrying Danny between them as they duck underneath countless stray blasts as the agents shout over each other.
“That signal was atrocious,” Jason complains as Dick leads them into an alleyway, probably orienting himself on nothing more than pure instincts. They take several complicated turns until they can’t hear the sound of battle anymore. “Cass would have had your head.”
“Well it worked, didn’t it?” Dick fires back and uses his shoulder to open a door, as they drag Danny in it, the boy still out cold.
The door falls close behind them and Dick stills as he feels the boy’s pulse, lips pressed into a thin line.
“This is bad, we need an Ecto-Dejecto as fast as possible.” Dick gnaws at his lips. “Neither of us has enough ectoplasm to heal this.”
Jason’s eyes grow wide as he sees Dick’s eyes and veins glow green, his brother’s face getting paler by the second. Jason rips away Dick’s grasp on Danny and the man lets out a gasp, breathing shakily and looking incredibly drained
“What the hell did you do?”
“Transferred the little ectoplasm I have to Danny,” Dick wheezes out. “We can’t use yours, the corruption would overpower his ectoplasm with how little reserves he has left.”
“There’s no reason you had to do this if it hurts you!”
Dick leans against a wall for support, his limbs shaking.
“You- You don’t get it,” Dick still sounds breathless. “Electricity-” He coughs. “It’s his one weakness. Destabilizes his core. It’s- It’s how he died. If we don’t get him the Ecto-Dejecto he’ll-”
Dick grimaces as if he doesn’t want to finish the sentence, but it’s far too late that Jason notices it’s actually because he’s in pain. He barely steps forward and catches the man as he suddenly faints. Staggering underneath the weight of his brother — and the responsibility that his new brother might die if he makes the wrong decision, Jason says the only word he can think of.
“FUCK!”

Ric(hard) Fenton; Part 3
Read on ao3.
Masterlist. Previous. Next.
For several minutes after Jason gently laid Dick down, Jason just sits there, head in his hands as his world falls apart around him.
He doesn’t know how long it takes — it could have been minutes or hours until he pushes himself to stand. He hesitates at the door, looking over to where Dick and Danny are laying. Dick must have moved during his sleep because he has a hand grasped around the hem of Danny’s shirt. They look so peaceful like that — but the sight of Danny screaming as he gets repeatedly electrocuted and Dick’s face twisting with pain is still burned into his retina. The pit rage roars at the sight.
He leaves the building, hoping that he’ll be able to find his way back to it as he sneaks through the empty streets of Amity Park once again. He keeps to alleyways and stays out of the open, shoulders tense as he tries to make not a single sound. The city feels like a maze and the longer Jason trots through it, the more he wishes that he would have at least waited until Dick woke up — he has not a single clue where he is supposed to find an Ecto-Dejecto. The only clue he has is that Danny’s parents are crazy enough to build a portal into their basement — so he can only hope they are also eccentric enough that their home would stand out in the rows of family homes.
Now if he could only find his way out of the more commercial and industrial district of the town so he doesn’t have to stare at more skyscrapers, that would be great. Whoever decided on this infrastructure deserves hell. And he can’t even use the rooftops to orient himself from a higher vantage point because he of course forgot to bring his grapple hook with him and the skyscrapers are so high that even if he found a building with a fire exit ladder, they would block his view anyway.
Suddenly the hairs on his neck stand up on their own and Jason pulls his gun, about to shoot until he comes face to face with the Blob Ghost from before. He blinks away the Pit Rage, perplexed as the ghost nuzzles his cheek, radiating safe, happy, protect.
“Hey buddy,” Jason says, weirdly not being creeped out about the feeling of the ghost on his skin. “Think you could help me out?”
Confused, wary, scared.
“Do you know where Danny’s home is?”
Recognition, proud, excited.
“You do?” Jason feels a bit like a nut-jub talking to the ghost considering it can only communicate through emotions, but he still follows as it floats away. Better than wandering around lost even if it might lead him to the wrong house. He can start from there, if need be.
It’s a bit hard navigating the city with a ghost as his tour guide, considering it just phases through the buildings in its path, leaving Jason to scramble after it. It takes every bit of Bat Training for Jason to follow in its step and to not lose it. He slowly starts to understand what Dick and Danny meant by Blob Ghosts being a bit stupid — they seem to have a single-minded focus. If Jason lost sight of it, he doesn’t think the Blob Ghost would notice until he arrived where the hell it is leading Jason to.
By the time they come across the house he’s more than out of breath and sweaty. He stares at the big, bold sign titled “Fenton” and the large — whatever that is supposed to be on top of the roof and decides — yeah, there is no way this isn’t Danny’s home. The Blob Ghost makes a beeline towards it and disappears inside.
Jason goes up to the door and to his surprise it’s not even closed, but slightly ajar. He knits his eyebrows together — remembering how the one agent told Dick they had taken the Fenton’s from their home. As Jason steps into the house it becomes clear that there was some kind of struggle — a broken vase on the floor, several holes in the walls — obviously the Fenton’s hadn’t just offered themselves up. He glances at the photos of the wall as he searches for the basement door, finally able to put faces to the names.
Even from the pictures it’s easy to tell that they are a chaotic family and Jason is surprised to see that the latest picture includes Dick, the man standing between Danny and his sister as he beams at the camera. He wonders if the picture was made before or after the man regained his memories.
Despite the situation he is in, Jason can’t resist snooping around as he inspects the inside of the house — while he might not like to admit it, he’s still a Bat after all. There’s a half-assembled invention on the kitchen table next to a carton of milk as well as a box of cereal and ghost magnets pin a class schedule on the fridge. By the looks of it seems like it might be Danny’s. Jason almost steps into the shards of a broken bowl as he steps closer to read through it and he gags as the smell of spoiled milk hits his nose.
He steps back and tries covering his nose with the hem of shirt to no avail. His eyes trail the destruction from the kitchen to the front door. They probably overwhelmed whoever opened the front door before moving into the kitchen and surprising the other two. With the amount of agents they have, the Fentons had no chance.
He moves through the kitchen, side stepping the mess on the floor and finally finding the door leading down the basement. If he thought the rest of the house was messy but obviously lived in, the lab looks even worse. Mad Scientists fits the bill well — there isn’t a single surface that isn’t covered with either some suspiciously glowing chemicals, flasks, inventions or wires and machinery. And that isn’t even talking about the swirling portal that looks like a nightmarish Lazarus Pit.
He sees the Blob Ghost floating in front of it before it enters it, leaving Jason behind.
Jazon drifts to the computer and his eyebrows rise to the top of his hairline as he realizes it’s not even password protected. He decides against snooping in their files — he already lost enough time as is. He searches for Ecto-Dejecto and feels baffled when the blueprints detail it being a literal syringe with the words Ecto-Dejecto printed on it. He looks around the mess and lets out a big sigh — here’s to finding the needle in the haystack.
It takes him way too long to find where they store the serum. Jason thought the Batcave had many gadgets, but it’s nowhere close to the amount the lab holds. There’s also concerningly amount of weapons, making it obvious the Fentons must have been Ghost Hunters at some point in time — but he trusts Dick’s judgment of character. Dick would have never let Danny stay in this home if he was at risk of getting hurt by his parents.
Also Danny made it clear that most of the town, along with Jason and Dick themselves are liminal and he can’t imagine that the Fentons didn’t used to have alarms or internal defenses against ghosts or as Dick calls them “ectoplasmic entities” — especially with an open portal to the Infinite Realms. They would have been activated by now if they were still any.
He pockets the serum and makes his way back upstairs. Now to the bigger problem. How the hell is he supposed to find his way back to where he left Danny and Dick? He doesn’t have a guide anymore and he took so many twists and turns to follow the Blob Ghost that he lost all orientation. Not even speaking about the fact that he had wandered the town before that.
Jason sighs before he shakes his head. He doesn’t have time to hesitate, he just has to pick a direction and hope something seems familiar so he can retrace his steps from there. Mind made up, he heads across the street, but before he is able to duck back into an alleyway, something heavy hits his head. He has barely enough time to see a blurry white outline before he passes out.
Bruce is already in the Batplane as Tim explains the situation and the information he found out. Damian had insisted on coming with Bruce but he hadn’t relented. He already put two of his sons at risk because he made a mistake — he will not be doing another that will lead to their death again.
The comm line is charged with tension as Bruce mans the plane to fly to Amity Park at record time and Oracle directs him so he doesn’t interfere with any commercial flights. In the meantime Tim works on activating the tracker on Dick — after Bruce got lost in the time stream, everybody but Jason — Bruce hadn’t asked him although he wanted to — had agreed to wearing a tracker at all times as an emergency beacon in case they disappeared or got kidnapped.
He has a location once he sets down outside the city, leaving the Batplane behind. The sun will rise in an hour — he only has a small time window.
“Oracle, do we have eyes?”
“Negative, something seems to be interfering with the signal.”
Bruce grunts and the sign he walks past almost seems to be mocking him. ‘Amity Park — It’s calm here.’
“Avoid people in white suits at all cost,” Tim informs Bruce just in time as he ducks into an alleyway and hides behind a garbage can as a group of agents holding strange blasters walk past it, discussing something.
“I always thought Operative O was too cocky — he had it coming.”
Someone snorts.
“No one will be missing him, for sure.”
Bruce knits his eyebrows together as the voices fade. A casualty on their side? Jason, Dick and Danny have only been in Amity for mere hours. How has something already gone wrong?
“Did you copy that Red?”
“Copied. Operative O is one of the main agents assigned to Amity Park. He’s…” Tim hesitates rarely and it’s enough for Bruce to know that the man must be a big deal. “...rogue material.”
“Hood then,” Bruce affirms and strangely doesn’t even feel angry about the fact. “ETA for the signal?”
“15 minutes if you stay on the ground, 10 if you use shortcuts.”
“I’ll make it in 5.” Bruce aims his grapple at one of the roofs and swings himself up. They have no idea in which state they’ll find Dick in — according to Tim his signal has been stagnant for the last two hours. There’s also no guarantee that either Jason or Danny will be with him. “Prepare the Batplane for extraction.”
“Copied.”
Bruce runs across the rooftops, barely giving himself time to think as he hurries in the direction of the signal, using his grapple to catapult himself forward even as it strains his arms and shoulders. He slides down using the cord of the grapple, using minimal time to make sure they aren’t agents waiting in ambush before he storms into the building.
He’s barely two steps in before Danny lunges at him with an animalistic snarl, Bruce narrowly evading with a backward roll and getting cornered as his back hits the door. He holds up his hands in a placating gesture and it’s all he can do as the boy heaves with exertion, claws barely prickling his neck and drawing blood through his cowl.
The boy’s pupils narrow into slits as he takes in Bruce and bares his teeth at the man, sharp canines revealing themselves— and if he didn’t know better from Tim, he would think the boy is some kind of feline meta.
“I’m not here to hurt you,” Bruce says calmly, eyes wandering to Dick’s prone form, but Danny instinctively blocks his vision, taking a few steps back.
“And why should I believe you?” Danny growls, distrust in his eyes.
Bruce frowns, mind reeling.
“I don’t hurt kids.”
Danny barks out a bitter laugh.
“Right,” he says sarcastically. “Only the bad ones.”
Bruce knits his eyebrows together, staying quiet.
“You are the one that implied I’m dangerous, that I need to be ‘vetted’,” Danny quotes and Bruce eyes widen — how long had the boy known? How did he find out? Did Dick tell him? — “See? Bet you are thinking of how to shut me up by now.”
Bruce’s thoughts screech to a halt.
“See that’s a difference between you and me. While my instinct is to trust, yours is to distrust,” Danny spits out. “But apparently not when it’s about me being a potential villain.”
“If you know I’m also Bruce Wayne... Why…” Bruce is almost afraid of the answer. “Why don’t you trust me?”
“BECAUSE YOU ALMOST KILLED ME!” Danny blurts out, panting hard before he folds into himself, voice barely a whisper. “You almost killed me — dropped me off like- like a pig to be slaughtered.”
Danny tears his shirt down in frustration, revealing gnarly, twisted scars — a vivisection scar.
“You want to know why I don’t trust you? This is what you did to me — you and your goddamn team of heroes.”
