Really dumb crack chatfic I pounded out in about two hours because I got hit with Writing Inspiration(TM) and decided to use it in the moment for once. Featuring Saionji finding out he has half a uterus and also a period, and taking place in an ideal world in which the medical system is not horrifically intersexist.

Summary:

Wakaba finally convinces Saionji to see the doctor about those very regular recurrences of pain and nausea, and Saionji finds out something new about his body. Or: a cracky and probably ill-advised chatfic about Saionji finding out he's intersex.

My fic for Day 1 of Cass Week: Scars/Flowers!

This IS an utena fusion which means it contains both spoilers for the entirety of the anime and just about all of the same content warnings.

Excerpt:

Cass doesn’t know what to think of Tara.

“I’m the Rose Bride,” she says outside of the arena that first night. “You won the duel and that means I’m yours.”

“I don’t want you.”

Tara shrugs. “You won the duel.”

“Not for you.”

“Whatever you say Miss Cain.” Tara smiles, eyes closed behind her glasses, dimples on her cheeks. It’s fake.

Cass walks to school with Stephanie in the morning. When she comes back to her dorm afterward, she finds Tara there. She’s cleaning.

“You don’t need to,” Cass says.

“I don’t mind, Miss Cain,” Tara says. “Someone needs to do it.”

“Don’t call me that.”

Tara smiles again, still fake. “Sure.”

Cass does not want Tara, but she doesn’t want to lose her either she decides. Not when it means giving her up to the other duelists. Not when they just see her as a prize to be won.

“What is the rose bride?” she asks one night.

“I’m whatever you want me to be.”

Cass just wants Tara to be Tara. She wants her to be more than a prize. She wants her to be able to stand up to the bullies who corner her after school. She wants to see what it looks like when she really smiles.

“You should… be stronger,” Cass tells her. “I can show you.”

Tara smiles her fake smile. “If that’s what you want.”

Haven't fully gotten into Revolutionary Girl Utena yet but from what I've found out, I need to ask.

Is it just me or are there a lot of eerie parallels between Vash & Anthy?

Like, the big round glasses & red color scheme? The fact that both put on a smiling facade to hide the (rage and) agony they choose to bear out of a tragic sense of responsibility & repentance? How both have become desensitised to the casual violence inflicted on their bodies & psyche? The sense of devotion & loyalty towards someone/thing that's never stable? That they're seen as weapons & vessels instead of people?? The allegories for SA, lack of autonomy, the isolation, the abusive sibling, etc.???

I'm weary of the hate you get for being a Ruka fan. The whining and petty attacks are so infantile. I wish people would move on and let others enjoy their favorites without crying about it. I love Ruka and understand the complexities of his character. You also have a firm grasp of him that next to no one has. The grey morality of the cast in Utena is what made them so compelling and relatable in many ways. - Love a fellow Ruka fan. ❤

Thank you so much, my dear! Yeah, I just don't get it... I think a lot of it boils down to the male characters being held to a completely different standard. The things I've read and the things people say to me, it boggles the mind. The kiss is made out to absolutely be sexual assault, no matter the context or how Juri is way more upset about him trying to smash her locket and still calls him back when he's about to leave (because she's realised it was merely a ruse and disregards it). Yet Touga acting out his own sexual abuse on Saionji is commonly turned into a fucking joke or is romanticised. And don't get me started on the recent trend of bashing Miki for having a crush on Anthy. Or how they completely forget how when Saionji nearly drowned in the pond, Utena revived him with slaps to his face, but no one slaps an unconscious person to wake them up... Ugh. I just can't deal with the current state of the fandom. I mean, RGU aired the year I graduated high school and I've been a big fan since about a year after (I recall the movie was about to be released in Japan at the time I started watching it). For the longest time, it was mostly just Shiori who got hate and I would be in the minority who defended her, but it was still largely seen as a successor to Dear Brother as a dark, coming-of-age melodrama with queer themes.

I've resolved to not even bother with the discourse any longer, for the sake of my own mental health. There are others, people like you, who appreciate Ruka, and that gives me hope. And I also have the Ruka pov fic I'm working on, which is allowing me to explore exactly what I believe he was thinking and feeling during his arc. It deserves my energy way more than the haters. Again, thank you for your kindness and support. I really appreciate it and hope you read the fic once it's done. (Maybe before I move in late March?)

RETROSPECTIVE COMMENTARY: I don't think this fic aged particularly well. Not in terms of content (although, maybe that is the case too) but in terms of writing ability. I mean, most of the stuff I publish on AO3, then and now, needs some serious editing. But since I currently mostly write only for fun and practice, that's not happening. Any editing I do is ad-hoc or only to get rid of those unsightly typos.

At the time of writing, however, there is a (non-Utena) fic that is being edited by a friend. So soon! Soon, I will have something I didn't pull out of my arse in the middle of the workday at a reasonable writing time, like dead in the night noon!

Anywho. Here is the fic that revived (jumpstarted?) my writing career.

Also, I do not like Utena x Miki. Not one bit. Not then, and not now. I'm certain it was a decision I made because that pairing was the one I saw in the dream this fic was based off of.

BONUS:

In the fic notes, I mentioned that the fic itself was an "outline" for an Utena fanfic (doujin) I wanted to make.
