Any of you ever find a new thing you're interested in and you want to know and see more of it, only to find out that thing has been dead or gone for a while and the person/people behind it did something awful or got in some bad controversy?

Cause I have and it's with this:

So I was rewatching some old/classic web animations (mostly Eddsworld, SMB Z, and archived newgrounds animations) and I saw this in one of the playlist that has a bunch of those animations. I only watched it because it was next in the queue but after a couple of minutes I was kinda hooked on it and kept on watching, after a while I decided to watch it till the end, and well...I was really interested.

Sure it was REALLY dated with how it looks and feels, plus the characters and the concept or setting are really standard and could use some improvements, but I thought to myself while searching for more stuff about this series: "Eh, it's part of the charm with these old web animations. Also this was just the pilot episode so surely there's more to come, surely it'll get better from here, surely this'll be a good or at least fine series that'll have some charm and laughs with absolutely nothing bad happening to-" yeah that didn't happen and I wished it did instead of what actually happened.

Yeah so going over every unfortunate thing that happened would take like forever (I think based on what other people have said) so I'll just give you a short summary of what happened: The creator (animated james) canceled the series after two short seasons, he was exposed to have some questionable actions and/or interest which of course led to controversy, and he disappeared from the internet (wherever he is I hope he's doing well). Yup it's another "a classic content creator's downfall" situation...

Okay but you might be thinking to yourself: "What about the series itself and it's two short seasons? Is it any good, is it another case of separating the art from the artist, did it at least leave a bittersweet taste behind?" well....no. Yeah I'm very sorry to any C Students fans out there, I understand if you like this series and think it's really great or an underappreciated gem from the past, I get that and I respect it, but C Students is just really meh to me.

"Well what is C Students?" you might ask, well according to the wiki: C Students is animated web series centered upon a group of teenagers and their life and misadventures in Hartlane High School. Yup, that's all it is from the wiki, and it's actually fitting because that's is ALL this series is about, it's literally just another "teen high school - slice of life & comedy" series kinda like the ones you would find on Nickelodeon or Disney Channel back in the 2000s, except this time it's animated...which isn't really giving it much, like aside from the expressions, some of the movements, and a few things here and there you can have this series in live action instead and it would not be any different.

The characters don't improve or change even slightly from their basic one-note roles/stereotypes in the pilot, similarly the misadventures and situations they go on or find themselves in aren't that interesting or different compared to those from any other series in the genre, and the humor is...the same as those from any other series of this kind, not to say that it's all bad but it's definitely got a lot more misses than it does hits as the later episodes go on, hell even the mature jokes have all aged in varying conditions (both generally and based on the controversy). Speaking of which, that's kind of the overall problem I have with C Students: It clearly looks and feels like a comedic slice of life high school series, but it also tries to be serious and act like it has something important to tell, and it's obvious that it doesn't mix together or handled well. Like for example there's the music video "Creative Types" which is great to watch and listen on it's own, but when put alongside the actual episodes it feels out of place and doesn't feel like it's from the same series at all, which it is even if it's not canon to the main series' timeline. So TLDR: It peaked at the pilot and it slowly and sadly went downhill

However the thing that upsets me more than anything else about this series is...It could be good! It could've been better! I wish it could've been better! I wish it could've entertained us with something different or interesting to it's concept or genre in the same way as The Looney Tunes Show does to suburban sitcom, I wish it could've mixed/handled/balanced the more serious and mature stuff better like Smiling Friends, I wish it could've had some nice charm and laughs to it at least.

Which is why I'm planning on making my own take/version of C Students! Yes I know it's another one to add to my pile of "stuff I've planned out but never actually making", but that's the thing with me unfortunately: I'm good at planning or making ideas and not so much on actually making them come to life, I'm just one person and the idea of making a long running thing on your own without any help whatsoever is terrifying, I'm the one with the blueprints and I need other people to actually construct the thing. But anyways yeah, that was my personal thoughts on C Students (If you don't like or disagree with it then feel free to do so as it is MY opinion and you shouldn't feel obliged to agree with it) I'm PROBABLY gonna make my own take on this series sometime soon, hopefully we'll see how that turns out

EDIT: So I found out that the seasons I watched was a fan-continuation of the series not by the OG creator, but all my points still stand as it would've been more or less the same as canon (according to the creator and people in the comments)

Long time followers know I’m a cranky brown woman and one of the things that makes me cranky is the use of American South West aesthetics without homage to the Indigenous and Black Americans and Mexicans that invented the aesthetic. My Cecil is Native (and your question should be “which tribe?!” But I haven’t decided yet. I’m pondering.) He started going gray when he was a teenager and had fully white hair by the time he was 25.

Also I love how this came out! The sky!! The plants!! The sunglasses B-)

I’ve got thoughts on that document leak that happened a little while ago. I’m not under any impression that a real, actual, honest to goodness lawyer has seen this thing and gave the goahead to use it. There’s just no way, it’s full of shit that wouldn’t hold up in any court. What I’m a little more convinced on however is Thelle believing that it would. He’s demonstrated a consistent and hilarious misunderstanding of the law for someone who supposedly has a law office in his back pocket to tap into at any time. So I’m willing to believe that this actually is the first document between Thelle and Insolent. Thelle mentioned in Steve’s server that there was a new agreement in place, and that’s the one that Steve has seen. Explaining the differences. (It may also explain why the document in the tag is so godawful. A real lawyer would have wanted to have direct contact with Insolent about this to hash things out. Might be inconvenient to do that if she doesn’t exist, right?) Lets talk about the why behind this leak though, because I think it deserves more scrutiny. Who would have something to gain from it? I don’t think the Cherp team would, it would pretty much destroy their legal defense options. Also this ‘contract’ references Rezzy, so uh Yikes? Next there’s Thelle. I do believe that he might have had some reason to post this. He owes TT something that was payed for, and now he’s being super flaky about talking to them when it comes to getting that sorted out. I think the original plan might have been to ‘leak’ the document, blame the cherp team, and then use it as an excuse to not hand over a very expensive piece of equipment. But we’re all making fun of the document for being so bad that it’s hard to believe the thing is even real. If he cites that as a reason now it’d validate this document as real and raise some concerning questions. Another potential leaker would be Insolent herself, just trying to stir things up. Now I’m not of the opinion that she exists for a whole variety of reasons, but lets assume that she does for the sake of argument. We know her to be spiteful, but we also know that she and Thelle are in direct contact with each other at this point and have already hashed out a new agreement. How does this benefit her? It would give out her real name, which apparently she never wanted tied to Cherp in the first place. Maybe in this case it’s fake, but that still doesn’t explain what she has to gain from that.

Could you please write out that timeline?

Alright so I don’t have exact dates (I could if I rejoin the Cherp discord but that’s a no from me dog) so bear with me.

Insolent suddenly pops up when cherubplay is about to shut down. I say suddenly because there were talks in the tags and other discords in the community about what to do about this and she was in NONE of them (as far as I can tell because no one has produced any evidence) and says ‘it’s okay I got this’ and just so happens to have a server and everything prepared with her boyfriend the MXRp server host who just so happens to have the open space and free time for this! Whatever under the assumption I’m wrong I’ll say this could be true.

Except things get weird!

Thelle has a history of apparently getting close to people on his projects and trying to get romantically involved (cite the doxxing incident). Well from my understanding Thelle is added to help with the project. If I remember it was shortly after that Rez was added in as a discord mod and insolent suddenly stepped down. Remove the girlfriend and the other developer, become the hero, get the girl. Insolent goes completely radio silent in this time and we ONLY hear from Thelle. In this time from my understanding there is some sort of monetary exchange between TT and Insolent since Hex stated that she was paid.

Now

Thelle sells the site to AKI. Someone who has been notorious for being impossible to get ahold of and he seems to be the only one who can get any communication from them. During this time I’m assuming Thelle started to do his weird stalker thing he does on projects apparently and get closer to Rezzy. Insolent does the ‘Time Bomb’ (which again has been established there was no evidence of it happening outside of Thelle being like trust me). Thelle is now the hero to his Damsel in distress. This is entirely based off of the fact she apparently rejected him later on and this is just where I think it would make the most sense.

And Insolent who was radio silent and dead to the world SUDDENLY comes back into the picture. At the same time Evelyn appears with a Cherp competitor (RPbin) and an entire zip file of callout posts including every member of the Cherp staff. Except Thelle. This is where the theory starts so bear with me because everything else I’ve stated is either fact or I believe has enough evidence to be considered strongly possible.

Evelyn is another account that pops up out of nowhere claiming to do the project and just so happens to choose Thelle to be her ideal host just like the other two sites. Thelle was publicly interacting with them so it makes sense he isn’t in the screenshots despite being a very disliked member of the community. But note that this happens at the same time as Insolent doing the DMCA claim. But it’s okay! Thelle is here to save the day and prevent the site from getting into trouble. Don’t worry he’ll fix it! Playing a hero part because usually with legal stuff comes hard evidence that Hex has PUBLICLY STATED they have not seen any. Kind of suspicious that he wouldn’t give his ACTUAL PAYING CLIENTS any information on a supposed possible lawsuit against them outside ‘trust me’.

Well Evelyn demands to confront TT and that whole fiasco happens. Cool. Except then

She vanishes and goes entirely radio silent. Deleting everything without a single word. Then just so happens to be able to get in contact with Aki! Who coincidentally only talks to Insolent who only talks to Thelle! You know, the Aki that no one can find ever? She does it in less than a day and sells the code. Well? Now MXRp just so happens to have a long format roleplay section fully created and ready!

So if Rezzy rejects him what’s the point of Cherp even being there? The girl is gone, the community is mad at him and he has ‘insolent’ on his heels.

Which is right before Insolent goes absolutely crazy and tries to have the site taken down (source: “trust me guys”-Thelle). His Lawyer office shuts down around this time (my theory is to get more money by claiming he has to pay someone new) Now he’s collected money from them for a couple years now and he’s absolutely pissed and so it’s established Cherp gets donations to keep a long term site operation.

Well he just so happens to have this long term roleplay code ready to go now! Amazing just in time! Because if Cherp shuts down for a DMCA request on code that was already paid for where are we going to go? The bright and shiny new section of MXrp? You betcha! Funnel the money into one place.

Except who is Insolent? I can’t find any sort of tag relating to her screen name in the projects that she supposedly helped Thelle with. No mentions of her in any dev logs I can find, FUCK I can’t even find her on the EMPLOYEE RECORDS of the companies Thelle is involved with! I could find his LITERAL ADDRESS in the uk registry based off of his company names before I could find ANY trace of Insolent existing before Cherp. According to Thelle they’ve been long time friends and they DATED! So why is there nothing even mentioning her before Cherp?

Alrighty time for my yearly annual birthday sappy post thingy so line up, and this one's a long one:

Another day, another birthday, another trip around the sun for yours truly. And this one has been......weird. Weird in good ways - many, many good ways-, weird in bad ways, weird in.....well, weird ways.

A lot has happened to me in the past year. My spark for writing seems to be returning, I finally got the chance to actually go to school, I've gotten to do things I've only dreamt of and I've made some amazing friends.....but I've also lost a lot of friends. My mental was at its absolute worst, and I felt like a complete fucking failure. I...I hated myself, more than I have in the past and I'd never thought that I would.

I questioned myself this past year; who I really want to be, and what I really want for myself.

A lot of people have re-entered my life and tried to test me like they had in the past. They've tried to play me and act like nothing is wrong.....but they're the ones who are wrong.

I know my self-worth now, and I am worth so much fucking more than they ever gave to me - which, in all honesty, was next to none in the damn first place.

I know what I want, and I know where I belong. I know who my people are and I know who I can really count on.....and it's all of you.

To my beautiful friends, mutuals, and followers, I say thank you.

Thank you for helping me grow this past year and for never giving up on me, thank you for being there for me, thank you for just being.

I love you all for everything that you've done for me; for the things you never needed to do, and for the things I will never know about. Because it's because of y'all that I am who I am; weird flaws and quirks and dorkish, absolute benign shitty abnormally me kind of behavior and all.

Thank you for believing in me and for sticking around. I really owe it to you all, all of it.
