‘Black Mirror’: the dark side of technology
by Oihab Allal-Chérif
Tumblr media
Season 5 of Black Mirror begins on June 5, 2019. Allocine
(translated from French)
Because technology as its main character, Black Mirror is one of the most fascinating yet disturbing series of the last ten years. Fascinating, because viewers can easily identify with most situations. Disturbing, because the technology is hostile: addictive, invasive, spy, alienating, psychopathic, apocalyptic
Since Netflix broadcast the trailer for season 5 of Black Mirror on May 15, to launch on June 5, viewers have been eagerly awaiting the series, which, in very few episodes, has inspired the public, and many other shows.
youtube
Black Mirror season 5 trailer.
An original concept for a powerful message
Launched in 2011, Black Mirror not only aims to entertain, but it also invites us to think about how technology can harm society and transform our behaviour. Each episode shows how an existing technology could evolve in the near future, for better, or especially for worse. Technology can be dangerous in itself, but more often malicious designers or users use it to manipulate, humiliate, coerce, enslave or kill.
In Black Mirror, the situations are familiar, but are pushed to the extreme, provoking anxiety, destruction and even death. Each episode is independent, with its own universe and style, though clues sometimes link them. The topics covered include the obsession with celebrities, reality TV, social networks, video games, smartphones, and pornography; the end of private life; robots and androids; social and commercial profiling; fake news and opinion manipulation; dating sites and matching systems; immersive augmented reality; cybersecurity and cyberbullying; the transfer of memory or consciousness into a machine; and transhumanism.
One of the most iconic Black Mirror episodes is season 1, episode 2, “Fifteen Million Merits”. It presents a world close to the description of philosopher Herbert Marcuse, in which humanity is enslaved by mass media, advertising and industry. The main character, Bing, spends his days pedalling an exercise bike in front of a television screen, like the whole of the middle class. He earns credits, called “merits”, to buy products or services. In this materialistic society, where technology dominates and corrupts, everyone is constantly being filmed. Reality TV and gaming are the only entertainment, and fame the only ambition. Not using pornography is a crime. Although Bing wants to revolt and denounce the system that oppresses him, he eventually becomes part of it, abandoning his morals for a comfortable life.
youtube
The most powerful moments in Black Mirror, episode “Fifteen Million Merits”.
From horrifying science fiction to tragic reality
While Black Mirror seems to unfold in the near future, the show depicts worrying current trends. Its creator, Charlie Brooker, surfs the technological news, cleverly incorporating it into terrifying scenarios. While these fantastic stories may seem exaggerated, technology, particularly digital technology, is increasingly used in crime, is responsible for multiple pathologies, and causes geopolitical conflict, the drift toward authoritarianism and social deterioration. Black Mirror prophecies that have come true are the subject of heated debate.
The perverse behaviour presented in several episodes of Black Mirror can be observed on social networks. On May 15, a 16-year-old Malaysian teenager committed suicide after asking her Instagram followers if she should live or die, because 69% told her to end her life. Facebook has also been blamed for broadcasting live 17 minutes of the March 15 attacks in Christchurch, New Zealand in which 51 people died. Black Mirror repeatedly illustrates the morbid, sordid tastes of many anonymous online viewers, as in the very first episode.
youtube
Black Mirror, trailer for the “National Anthem” episode.
A futuristic show that questions the present
Season 3, episode 1, “Nosedive” describes an oppressive society where everyone constantly grades other people’s words, actions, and publications on a five-point scale. They are equipped with eye implants enabling them to see the grades of those around them. This satire on a society where everyone is obsessed by their own image criticises superficiality and the need to portray oneself positively to obtain other people’s approval. The episode illustrates perfectly the consequences of China’s “social credit” system, which monitors and records the entire population in real time to “improve” behaviour and strengthen the regime.
In season 3, episode 2, “Playtest”, a gamer tries an experimental video game that kills him in a few milliseconds. The guinea pig is equipped with a virtual reality headset and a neural implant. The implant hacks his brain and generates images based on his fears and physiological data. The episode warns against giving developers control of human senses, and about the immersive, invasive technologies that are the future of video games. “Playtest” was first broadcast on Netflix on October 21, 2016, a few months after the release of the Facebook Oculus Rift Headset on March 28, 2016.
Season 4, episode 5, “Metalhead”, describes a post-apocalyptic world, where intelligent killer dogs hunt humans. This is a direct reference to the company Boston Dynamics, which Google sold in 2017 to the Japanese group Softbank. In the series, these dogbots appear on building sites and in public, but the project was initially a partnership with DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), a US military R&D agency.

Reality: Boston Dynamics robot testing at construction sites.
Imitated but never equaled
The Season 5 promotional campaign reminds us that the series has changed its viewers’ perceptions of the world and has received multiple prizes, including Emmys and BAFTA Awards. The reviews are excellent, with an overall score of 8.9/10 on IMDb.
Similar shows have tried to imitate the success, such as the miniseries Electric Dreams, based on sci-fi author Philip K. Dick’s short novels, many of which have been adapted for the screen. Considered a clone of Black Mirror, Electric Dreams was first aired on Channel 4 in Britain, like its model. Amazon Video acquired the US rights, and with Bryan Cranston as executive producer and an all-star cast, the series was successful, but did not attain the cult status of Black Mirror.
Westworld also seems strongly influenced by Black Mirror. Its first two seasons focused on robotics and transhumanism. HBO has just released the trailer for the third season, planned for 2020, in which a new character, played by Aaron Paul (who played Jesse Pinkman in Breaking Bad, and who performed a voiceover in an episode of Black Mirror) condemns the false promise of a better world made to justify the technological development and commercialisation of servo devices.
Black Mirror has often been compared to The Twilight Zone in the 1960s, and is probably at the origin of its reboot, although the showrunner Jordan Peele – author, director and producer of the thrillers Get Out and Us – denies the similarity. Jordan Peele is also co-author of the series Weird City, released on February 13, 2019, on YouTube Premium. Its well-chosen guest-stars present the dangers of technology with more humour.
AMC, which broadcast popular series like Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead, has commissioned a new series for 2020 from Will Bridges, one of the authors of Black Mirror, that will focus on a dating technology that finds your soul mate. Since the original is often better than its copies, let’s hope that Netflix will produce many more seasons of Black Mirror.

Episode Review- The Real Ghostbusters: Killerwatt
Tumblr media
Well, this episode was certainly less goofy than the last one. And the humor relied more on puns instead of slapstick.  And I am completely okay with that.
It appears New York City is experiencing an unusual number of blackouts.  The cause of the blackouts begins to become clear when we see some electrician climbing to the top of a powerline tower to access for any problems.  While he’s up there, he witnesses an entity that appears to be made of electricity.  Thankfully, the electrical entity doesn’t harm the electrician and simply continues to travel along the powerlines.  But this episode could have gotten really dark right here, with the electrician getting electrocuted by this entity.  Then again, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that they didn’t go there.
Over at the Firehouse, Ray is preparing dinner for his teammates.  Which is a bit surprising, since we’ve just established that the city is experiencing blackouts.  So how exactly was Ray able to operate the stove during a power outage?  I guess the electrical grid that covers the neighborhood the Firehouse is in hasn’t been affected yet.  Anyway, Ray completes the dinner, which he claims was from an old family recipe or something, and he proceeds to serve it to Egon, Peter and Winston.  By placing the hot soup pot directly on the table without using a trivet or anything.  Way to damage the tabletop, Ray.
But the other Ghostbusters are less than pleased when they take in the appearance of Ray’s concoction.  It apparently looks less than appetizing, and it’s no wonder when Ray announces the meal is called Fondue Casserole.  (So, it’s a bowl full of melted cheese?  Yeah, I like cheese as much as the next person, but that does sound revolting.)  The guys manage to avoid having to try and choke down the stuff in order to spare Ray’s feelings thanks to Slimer, who steels Ray’s napkin, thereby keeping him distracted long enough for Egon, Peter and Winston to empty their bowls into Slimer’s waiting mouth.  Of course, this plan almost backfires as Ray, pleased to see how quickly his friends finished the food, happily offers them all seconds.  Thankfully, that’s when Janine calls them all downstairs to announce they were called in directly by Mayor Lenny himself.  I guess that electrician from earlier reported seeing the electrical entity, so they now have reason to believe that ghosts are responsible for the blackouts plaguing the city.  So Mayor Lenny wants the Ghostbusters to come and do something about it.
They end up driving out to some department store at a mall, where shoppers have witnessed a particularly large number of ghostly happenings.  When they enter the department store, the Ghostbusters quickly find that the ghosts can readily possess anything electrical, from power drills and vacuum cleaners to ovens and dishwashers.  Right away, these possessed appliances begin to attack, with Slimer quickly getting sucked up into a vacuum (even though he should be able to pass through the vacuum bag with zero effort, considering we’ve already established he can go through walls). There’s even one moment during this sequence when Egon almost gets pulled into a possessed oven that’s spouting out flames.  But eventually, they discover they can simply zap the possessed appliances with their Proton Packs to flush out the ghosts, allowing them to be caught.  Of course, the scene ends with Ray briefly mistaking Slimer for one of the prankish ghosts, prompting him to apologize to their little green friend for the mistake.
Upon returning to the Firehouse, the Ghostbusters load up the traps into the Containment Unit in order to store them away.  But just when they’re transferring the ghosts into the Containment Unit, either the blackout finally hits the Firehouse or the ghosts start infecting the Containment Unit the way they did with the appliances at the department store.  It wasn’t very clear which it was.  Either way, the power supplying the Contaminant Unit shuts down.  Briefly, the Ghostbusters panic, until Egon announces it’s all good.  He must have remembered the incident with Peck shutting down the protection grid as well as what happened last episode, as he installed an emergency generator, which kicks in seconds later.
However, this solution doesn’t last, and the emergency generator suddenly becomes possessed by another electrical ghost, and the possessed emergency generator runs off.  So the Ghostbusters are back at square one again.  As such, they have to scramble around to come up with another way to keep the Containment Unit activated.  Well, rather Peter, Winston and Ray scramble around while Egon just stands there counting down to the imminent explosion.  Like, hello Egon!  You know, you could help!
They manage to piece together a homemade generator using the Ecto-1’s generator and this bike a little girl happened to be riding by on. (Peter compensated her reasonably for the bike, so that was nice of him).  With Janine keeping the homemade generator running by pedaling away, the Ghostbusters make their way to the power plant to put an end to this once and for all. Because Egon was now able to trace the PKE spikes to a power plant in Brooklyn. Which is rather amazing.  The Firehouse is located in Manhattan, but Egon is able to trace a reading over in Brooklyn?  That’s quite an impressive range you’ve got on that PKE Meter, Egon.
Of course, when they get to the power plant, the Ecto-1’s battery dies within walking distance to the plant.  We then get a little action sequence when, thanks to Slimer goofing off in the driver’s seat, the Ecto-1 begins rolling down the hill on its own, with the Ghostbusters clinging to hood of the car.  Thankfully, Peter manages to stop the Ecto-1 right before it crashes into the side of the power plant by managing to crawl his way through the Ecto-1’s sunroof and activating the emergency brake.
This is when the episode’s big bad reveals itself.  Turns out, it’s this giant ghost made up of raw electricity.  The ghost identifies itself as Killerwatt, and all the other ghosts who have been possessing electrical appliances and whatnot are its underlings.  Killerwatt proceeds to attack the Ghostbusters, and, hoping to harness some of Killerwatt’s electrical attacks to jumpstart the Ecto-1, Peter activates this Ecto-Scope.  Although, this just leads to the Ecto-1 getting possessed as well.  And Ray vehemently protests against shooting at the Ecto-1 like they did with the appliances at the department store because, as he puts it, the Ecto-1 is part of the family.  (It’s a car, Ray!)
Now we get some prolonged sequence of various things happening. After managing to shake the possessed Ecto-1, the Ghostbusters enter the power plant and just kind of run around for a bit, trying to evade the various possessed generators and such.  They eventually make it to this room for the final showdown with Killerwatt, who has now possessed some machine.  And Killerwatt isn’t going down easily, as the Proton Steams just kinda seem to reenergize it. That’s when Winston gets an idea to just shut down the powerplant, surmising that doing so will cause Killerwatt to become weakened, as it would be cut off from feeding off the energy the powerplant is supplying.  To prevent them from doing so, Killerwatt creates this gaping chasm between the Ghostbusters and the master switch.  Of course, Slimer could have just flown across this chasm to reach the master switch, because he is capable of doing so.  But instead, Slimer opted to just literally pull the plug on the operation. Which doesn’t make much sense, when you think about it.  The machines that generate electricity in a power plant are plugged into the wall? Eh, it’s a kid’s show.  What are you gonna do?
Anyway, with the powerplant offline, Killerwatt is weakened and abandons its host body, enabling the Ghostbusters to catch it.  With the day saved and the city’s power issues repaired, Mayor Lenny commends the Ghostbusters, with a parade held in their honor.  But ha-ha, the Ghostbusters forgot to notify Janine the crisis is over.  And she’s still pedaling away on the homemade generator back at the Firehouse. Needless to say, she is not very happy. So I imagine the Ghostbusters had to bend over backwards for quite a while afterwards in order to make it up to her.
Overall, this was better than the last episode, but there were still some moments that make you cock your head a bit.  Can’t wait to see how the other episodes hold up.  Oh, and we also get the show’s first reference to Janine’s crush on Egon.  So that’s pretty cool.

Electric Motorcycle Market 1 st Quarter 2021 | Share, Gross Margin, Production and Consumption Analysis, Brands Statistics and Overview by Top Manufacturers 2027
Market Scope
The global electric motorcycles market can attain a growth rate of 10.35% during the forecast period (2020–2027), believes Market Research Future (MRFR).
Market Boosters and Key Barriers
Electric motorcycles function by using electricity as fuel. The electric motorcycle, unlike electric bikes, electric scooters, electric mopeds, and electric bicycles, refers to a two-wheeled vehicle that works with the use of a motor. These vehicles are designed for higher speeds and come with enhanced acceleration as well as high-speed handling characteristics. They are ideal for slow urban commutes or highway speeds and beyond. Electric motorcycles provide more wind protection compared to scooters and moped and usually consist of some cargo storage.
Furthermore, diminishing oil reserves around the world coupled with rising number of government initiatives to boost the use of green vehicles has given rise to alternative solutions, which benefits the market. The market growth is also the result of considerable investments in vehicle charging infrastructure, surging interest from large scale manufacturers and reduced battery costs. However, a couple of performance constraints and a general lack of awareness regarding electric motorcycles can thwart the ongoing market growth rate in the near future.
Get a FREE Report Sample -  https://www.marketresearchfuture.com/sample_request/8136
Additional factors that are stimulating market growth include the incorporation of regenerative braking, economical maintenance costs, elevated mechanical efficiency and low noise levels, which boost the adoption of environment-friendly vehicles. The electric motorcycles market can witness further growth during the review period, thanks to rising demand in developing countries like India and Thailand.
Market Segmentation
The worldwide market for electric motorcycle has been segmented on the basis of vehicle range, battery type and voltage.
Depending on the vehicle range, the global market can be split into below 75 Miles, 75-100 Miles, and above 100 Miles.
With respect to the battery type, the global market has been considered for li-ion, lead acid, and nickel metal hydride.
Voltage-based segments in the global market are below 24 Volt, 24-48-volt, 48-60 volt, and above 60 volts.
Regional Outlook
MRFR gives a clear picture of the global electric motorcycles market by segmenting it regionally into North America, Europe, Asia Pacific (APAC), in addition to the Rest of the world.
The APAC electric motorcycles market is believed to have the most potential to achieve the highest CAGR during the forecast period. The region is showing remarkable progress owing to factors like rising concerns about carbon and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions that have accelerated the need for fuel-efficient vehicles. Burgeoning population, increasing traffic congestion, declining prices of electric motorcycles, and mounting environmental concerns add to the market strength in the region.
Buy Now - https://www.marketresearchfuture.com/checkout?currency=one_user-USD&report_id=8136
Europe along with North America will demonstrate significant market growth in the following years, given the quick rate of adoption of electric motorcycles and the strong support given by the government in the form of financial and non-financial incentives. Also, high commuter base in these regions stimulates market growth. Rising availability of smart charging stations also offers a host of opportunities to both these regional markets in terms of growth. Solar-powered and automated charging stations are becoming popular, which also benefits the market. Electric motorcycles providers are striving to make a mark in the market by designing and developing these types of charging stations to expand the horizons of complete nature-based transportation.

These Five Issues Are At The Heart Of All K-12 Education Policy Debates
New Post has been published on https://perfectirishgifts.com/these-five-issues-are-at-the-heart-of-all-k-12-education-policy-debates/
These Five Issues Are At The Heart Of All K-12 Education Policy Debates
In education, we don’t always talk about what we’re really talking about.
The next four years offer the prospect of renewed debates about many aspects of public education policy. As we watch this new batch of fireworks launch, it will be useful to remember that virtually all of our debates are the outgrowth of four fundamental issues.
How To Fund Public Education
In the U.S., we like the idea of public education, but we don’t much care for funding it. Our use of real estate taxes to fund education has guaranteed that folks mostly pay for school for their own neighborhood, wealthy or not-so. There are some state-level mechanisms to help equalize that, but not all are effective.
Critics of public education often cite the increased costs of public education, but at least some is the result of slowly, reluctantly, providing better funding for previously underserved populations. And we’re still not there; for Pennsylvania alone, recent estimates are that nearly $5 billion are needed to fully fund all public schools. Sometimes the inequities are between districts, and in some cases, inequities exist within districts (e.g. the Pinellas County district in Florida that first segregated its students, then segregated the dollars that went to them). Throughout our history, many white citizens have resisted mechanisms that require them to finance education for Black students (Schoolhouse Burning and Overturning Brown are just two books from 2020 that lay out some of that ugly education history). Segregation of students and of finances has been a problem in our past, and we have not solved it in our present. On top of that layer the fact that some students, for a variety of reasons, simply cost more to educate than others.
Many reform initiatives of the past decades have declared themselves about “making schools better” or “reducing inequity” while the rest of that statement—”without spending more money”—remaining unspoken. The argument is that spending more money won’t help, and while it’s true that spending the money badly will not help, the research is clear—school funding matters when it comes to student success.
Vouchers and charter schools are both attempts to look like we’re addressing educational inequity without actually spending any more money. “Let the money follow the student,” is the slogan, and it completely skips over the question of whether the money is enough. The blanket is not big enough to cover the bed, but school choice advocates argue that by cutting the blanket up, moving the pieces around, and perhaps setting up some extra cots, the too-small blanket will become large enough to cover everyone. Meanwhile, there’s no serious research to indicate that choice schools do more with less.
The funding issues also affect teachers, because teachers are the major cost in education. So we see frequent attempts to lower labor costs in education. Have Teach for America style staff that turns over every few years. Create pedagogy-in-a-box programs that don’t require a trained teacher to deliver. Replace part or all of the staff with computerized programs—especially shiny new ones with AI. It all cuts costs.
All of it comes back to a fundamental issue. The U.S. system demands a Lexus on a Kia budget, and many of our citizens really don’t want to pay to educate Those Peoples’ children. This desire to do school on the cheap serves to limits the range of solutions considered for every single problem in education. As long as we are unwilling or unable to say that we will pay whatever it takes to create a top-level education system that serves every student, these debates will continue.
Equity and Justice; Race and Religion
We have many, many ideas about equity and justice in this country, with new rounds of old arguments opened in recent years. Under Betsy DeVos, the department began “efficiently” closing out complaints related to race, and reversed Obama-era guidance meant to address racial inequity in school discipline. At the same time, she has shifted focus to what she perceives as a different brand of inequity—that related to religion. Espinoza v. Montana Department of Revenue has further eroded the wall between church and state and paved the road for more use of taxpayer dollars to fund private, religious schools.
Both of these debates about fairness and justice—religion and race—are roiling in the country right now, and public schools are always a reflection of society. A Biden administration is far more likely to focus on trying to right historic and systemic for BIPOC students, but the Trump administration has installed a wide net of judges who are seen as more sympathetic to conservative causes. We are likely to see initiatives aimed at addressing injustices, both real and perceived, promoted through a variety of avenues.
A nation’s schools don’t exist in a vacuum. Every single argument we have in our world about justice, equity, values, racism, and decency is going to spill over into schools, and that’s going to be reflected in policy debates.
How To Read Students’ Minds
This is a challenge for every policy maker and every classroom teacher—how do you know what students have actually learned?
All of assessment is about trying to design an assessment task that will show us what the student did or did not grasp. The list of factors that can interfere with these acts of hopeful psychic divination. The student may not understand the task. The student may simply be distracted or focused on other factors. The student may run afoul of the medium through which she’s supposed to show her stuff; she may have trouble writing papers, or multiple choice questions might throw her. Or the assessment task itself may be poorly designed.
This is a daily challenge for teachers, but it becomes even more troublesome when policy makers start talking about “accountability.” For the past few decades, reformers have wanted to measure both what is in students’ brains and how much of it a particular teacher put there in a particular year. What they’ve settled on is an annual battery of multiple choice questions about reading and math. It is not a great instrument, but policy makers (and people who write about policy) have pretended that it is a real proxy for “student achievement,” and that they can use special formulae to find out how much teachers contributed to that cranial content.
At all levels, the desire to have a solid answer to “how well is this working,” is natural, right and normal. But just as you can’t know exactly what your in-laws think of you, how your boss really feels about your last conference, and why your partner is still with you, you cannot ever know exactly how much learning has been packed into a students’ head. It’s a question we have to ask over and over, but we can never have absolute faith in the answer we get, and we must keep looking for better ones.
How Much Versus When
We know two things for certain in education. 1) Every student has her own pace and speed to work. 2) The system wants students to acquire certain learning by deadline.
Both are true, and both cannot be the foundation of the system. So we end up telling students, “Your job is to get to Cleveland from New York City. You can use any means of transportation that you have access to—drive, fly, bike, walk if you wish—and take any side trips along the way. But you have to get there in twelve hours.”
From time to time, there is a revolt against the idea of seat time. If a student can grasp the educational goal in three months, why make her sit in class for nine months? And if a student has sat in a seat for nine months, does that really mean she’s learned anything at all? Why not come up with a master list of Things To Learn and as soon as the list is checked off, send the student home?
The debate involves many educational issues, but the current pandemic mess has highlighted one real reason we don’t do this—sending students home from school on a varied and unpredictable schedule creates a whole new set of problems for families.
Nevertheless, the idea of alternatives to seat time will continue to be a debate partly because it has merit and partly because it is an opportunity for many folks to make money. Competency based education, various forms of personalized learning, and any edu-product that can have AI attached to it are hot growth industries. Remote learning during the pandemic has intensified the attention to the seat-time versus mastery debate; expect that debate to keep raging.
What Do Students Need To Know
The advent of Common Core turned “college and career ready” into a well-worn educational cliche, and yet, all these years later, we don’t really know what it means. What exactly does a student need to know or be able to do in order to be college and career ready? Is there a list of knowledge and skills that is essential to every student, whether she intends to be a welder or a physician or a banker or an author or a stay-at-home mom?
Common Core pretended to know the answer, but it was simply the answer that the writers of Common Core thought should be correct. There is no research base, no peer-reviewed study, no repository of scientific evidence to show a list of qualities and capabilities that are a requirement for a good, successful, happy life. We probably can’t even agree on what those three terms mean and if they all belong in that sentence.
We have always argued about what an education is for. There is always pressure for schools to focus on employable skills, to crank out meat widgets and worker bees to better satisfy the needs of business, but that, of course, is precisely the sort of education that wealthy and privileged parents would never settle for when it came to their own children. Shouldn’t education be about more than job training?
What is the point of school? We don’t debate this as often as we should, but our differing opinions about the answer underlie most of our other education policy debates.
These five fundamental issues are the foundation of every K-12 education policy debate, even if they remain unspoken (the “let’s keep it cheap” argument, in particular, is the quiet part that folks rarely want to say out loud). Our choice is to address them directly, or to just haggle at the margins. We’ll see what the future holds.

Government Initiatives to Boost Growth of Electric Motorcycles Market
Market Scope
The global electric motorcycles market can attain a growth rate of 10.35% during the forecast period (2019–2025), believes Market Research Future (MRFR).
Top Vendors
Top vendors influencing the worldwide electric motorcycles market include Electric Motion (France), LITO MOTORCYCLES (France), Revolt Motors (India), Bell Custom Cycles (BCC) (US),  Alta Motors (US), TACITA SRL (Italy), Zero Motorcycles Inc. (US), Blacksmith Electric (India), Husqvarna Motorcycles GmbH (Austria), Johammer e-mobility GmbH (Germany), Harley-Davidson, Inc. (US), Essence Motorcycles (France), Razor USA LLC. (US), Energica Motor Company S.p.A.(Italy), Torkmotors (India), among others.

[c&vd from behind the paywall]: The lockdown has produced a disparity between the old script of grievance and a sickness that can wreak destruction on anyone.
By
MATTHEW SITMAN
May 21, 2020
Last week, First Things editor R.R. Reno, a prominent Catholic intellectual who backed Donald Trump for president, let the world know he’d had enough of the effete conformists following public-health guidelines in response to the coronavirus pandemic. Sharing a photo on Twitter of Trump saluting World War II veterans, none of them wearing masks, he declared, “They’re men, not cowards. Masks=enforced cowardice.”
The reaction from critics was swift and punishing, as they noted the emerging wisdom that masks may be one of the most effective measures in preventing the spread of Covid-19. But Reno decided to tweet through it in a typo-laden tirade. “The mask culture if fear driven. Masks+cowardice,” he wrote. “It’s a regime dominate by fear of infection and fear of causing of infection. Both are species of cowardice.” Other, similarly garbled tweets followed, but one of them serves as an especially telling summary of his position: “Now we know who want to cower in place. By all means rage against those who want to live.”
The outburst was no aberration. Since March, he’s produced a string of commentary doubting the severity of the pandemic and lamenting the measures taken to combat it—particularly the temporary closures of churches. It’s not as deadly as we feared, he’s said, and for those under 35, perhaps little more worrisome than the flu—a statement that blithely ignores all that we still don’t know about Covid-19, from the long-term effects it might cause in even healthy young adults to the sudden spike in a Kawasaki-like disease in children. No matter. Reno renders his verdict: “The science increasingly shows that the measures we have taken in the last few weeks have been both harmful—with freedoms lost, money spent, livelihoods destroyed—and pointless,” he wrote.
It’s not just that Reno can sound at times like a coronavirus truther. He is also convinced that our pandemic response stems from a deeper civilizational malaise, one that prioritizes the fleeting material world over the everlasting life that awaits our souls after death. In a missive published in March, Reno declared, “There are many things more precious than life,” and castigated political leaders, especially New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, for leading “an ill-conceived crusade against human finitude and the dolorous reality of death.”
Reno is not alone on the Christian intellectual right in framing the shutdown as part of a grand narrative of spiritual decay. His colleague Matthew Schmitz wrote that, in valuing “health above all, we subordinate the spiritual to the temporal,” adding, “Unless religious leaders reopen the churches, they will appear to value earthly above eternal life.” National Review writer Alexandra DeSanctis caught flak on Twitter for writing, “It’s fascinating to see how the cultural loss of belief in God and eternity so often manifests in an outsized fear of death as the ultimate evil. Human life is beautiful and precious and good, but life on earth isn’t our ultimate end.”
The latter prompted a lot of jokes about the literal death cults forming on the right, but there is something more at work here. Writing in Providence magazine, Jason E. Vickers described this death-embracing cohort as possessing a “bitter remnant mindset,” and acting “as though they are the last Christians in America.” It’s a worldview shot through with grievances against the corrupt, decadent societies of the West, and it’s shared by otherwise very different factions on the right. Followers of Rod Dreher’s Benedict Option might seek to build intentional communities and withdraw from modern society, while Christian nationalists long for the political power to defeat it—but they have the same enemies.
For all Reno’s paeans to courage, the pandemic has shown us, in starker terms than before, the extent to which modern conservatism is driven by resentment of a seemingly hostile, terrifying world. Not all conservatives have succumbed to this impulse during the pandemic, of course. But those who have reveal the ways in which the pandemic is being shoehorned into a familiar culture war.
Let’s return to the example of Reno, since he manages to encompass both the raging id of the anti-lockdown protesters and the philosophical justifications of their actions that have appeared in the conservative press. One of his “Coronavirus Diary” entries begins with him visiting an emergency room in an outer-borough hospital. He can’t say more, though, because “the present conditions of public health hysteria” mean his host “might lose his job if higher-ups found out I penetrated the ‘no visitors’ cordon sanitaire.” Reno notes that, after cases of COVID-19 flooded the hospital in late March and early April, the doctor says they had since plummeted—a development Reno passes over as a happy mystery, never connecting it to the stay-at-home orders and economic shutdown that he has called “pointless” and “cowering.”
Reno also mentions that he’s been worshipping at an “underground” church, borrowing the language Christians have used for those persecuted by Communist regimes in China or, during the Cold War, behind the Iron Curtain. A sense of persecution hangs heavy over the article, as does the characterization of himself as a righteous dissenter.
Then the diary entry becomes surreal. Reno describes a long bike ride on a recent weekend, during which a Dunkin Donuts worker refuses to serve him because he isn’t wearing a mask. He ends up on Staten Island, and needs to take the ferry back—which also requires a mask. “Providentially,” he writes, “I found a mask in a gutter just before reaching the Staten Island Ferry, allowing me to board and steam back to Manhattan.”
What comes next comes as no surprise: Reno takes an antibody test, and the results show he had contracted the virus. Like the ending of certain novels, it transforms all that came before it. Was he wearing a mask in the hospital, or at his “underground” church? He doesn’t say. Reno doesn’t seem troubled that, even if he never had significant symptoms, he could have been spreading the virus to others. He doesn’t realize that wearing a mask is not a commentary on his own courage or virility, but a simple way to show concern and care for others who might be especially vulnerable to the ravages of Covid-19.
There’s little point in looking for sense or reason in Reno’s ramblings. The language of courage and cowardice can’t really be debated—it is pure emotion. The point is not to grapple with the reality of a complex, overwhelming situation that changes every day, about which there can be genuine debates, but to reinscribe it in affective terms. What becomes decisive is not the cogency or persuasiveness of a policy response to a public-health crisis, but whether or not you’re cowering in fear or bravely resisting the conformity imposed by dreaded, elite experts. Wearing a mask, or not, floats up to the realm of the purely symbolic. It is a way of brushing aside difficult questions for dramatic rhetoric about civilizational decline.
If Reno and others make this sort of argument in a religious key, others on the right render it in supposedly class terms. Patrick Deneen took to Twitter last month to say that the divide over the shutdown did not simply reflect your position on Trump, but might reveal “more fundamental differences between elites and masses,” sharing Christopher Lasch’s observation in Revolt of the Elites that “young professionals” are health-obsessed exercisers and dieters attempting to attain eternal beauty and live forever, while “ordinary people” just “accept the body’s decay.”
More recently, The Wall Street Journal’s Peggy Noonan, citing no evidence, regretted the “class divide between those who are hard-line on lockdowns and those who are pushing back.” The former consist of the professionals who make up the “overclass,” with the latter are “normal people” who are fatalistic about life, and therefore itching to open up the economy—a “generalization” she offers “based on a lifetime of experience and observation.”
Once again, all this only serves to twist debates over when and how to reopen the economy into a battle between supposed elites and ordinary folks who have not only been ignored and left behind, but also ridiculed. This just hasn’t been the case so far, and Reno, Deneen, and Noonan are making it up as they go along. The latest polling continues to find, as described in a recent Washington Post article, “that there just aren’t meaningful divisions along class or education lines on these questions.” There certainly isn’t a rugged, death-defying, God-fearing working class straining against the complacency of prissy white-collar overlords. Imagining that’s the case, however, is less challenging than talking about what actually will help workers: hazard pay, paycheck protections, paid medical leave, proper safety equipment, and robust testing. It’s grievance-mongering all the way down.
The writer Sam Adler-Bell has described the “mutable dynamism” of conservative politics, a term that captures the way the search for fresh enemies can stoke these passions. It explains why conservatives respond to novel situations with a tried-and-true mash-up of elite bashing and performative victimhood. But Americans’ reserve of patience and good will so far shows the glaring mismatch between the old script of grievance and a sickness that can wreak destruction on anyone.
Reno’s embarrassing pandemic punditry is finally the predictable consequence of the way he compromised himself by endorsing Trump, then taking up the mantle of “national conservatism.” G.K. Chesterton, a writer well-known to First Things editors, once wrote, “When a man concludes that any stick is good enough to beat his foe with—that is when he picks up a boomerang.” To view Trump as a useful wrecking ball, or a flawed vessel for an otherwise sound nationalism, with his critics being the real problem, is to be set adrift morally and intellectually. You take your bearings less from what you believe than what you oppose; if it provokes cosmopolitan elites, then there must be some value to it.
On Monday, after having deleted both his tweets about masks and his Twitter account, Reno published an apology at First Things. “I used over-heated rhetoric and false analogies,” he wrote. “It was wrong for me to impugn the intentions and motives of others, for which I apologize.” He should be taken at his word—but what the episode reveals about the intellectual right isn’t limited to a few late-night tweets.

France’s gilets jaunes protesters are hurting President Macron
Tumblr media
“WE’RE NOT blocking the traffic, just filtering it,” declares Loup, a 64-year-old former education assistant, who has a hand in each pocket and a silver ring in each ear. In his high-visibility jacket, from which the gilets jaunes (“yellow vests”) movement gets its name, he and a dozen others are manning a protest at a roundabout outside Evreux, in rural southern Normandy. On the muddy ground, a fire of wooden crates is blazing, and bags of croissants are piled up on a camping table. Protesters have blocked off one lane of the road, yet passing motorists hoot their horns not in anger but in support.

Two weeks ago the gilets jaunes emerged from nowhere via Facebook to block road junctions across France. The anger that started as a protest against a rise in diesel taxes has since widened into a revolt against President Emmanuel Macron. “At the end of the month, I just can’t afford to fill up the tank,” says Sandra, another gilet jaune and single mother of two small children, who works at an optician’s and drives 20km each way to her job. “We’re not rich, but we’re not poor. It’s an attack on the middle classes who work.”
The government says its tax increase of 7.6 euro cents ($0.09) a litre on diesel is part of a plan to align diesel and petrol taxes, to curb the small-particle pollution caused by diesel engines. A further increase of 6.5 cents is due in January 2019. “I’d rather tax fuel than work,” Mr Macron says. “Those who complain about higher fuel prices also demand action against air pollution because their children get sick.”
In France’s big cities, commuters are well served by metros, bike-share schemes and Uber drivers, and green taxes are seen as a virtue. But in places such as rural Normandy, modest earners do not buy the government’s green argument; they recall that previous governments encouraged the use of diesel at a time when it was judged to be less polluting than petrol. Today, they think that the tax hike is, rather, a punishment for families struggling to make ends meet, and proof of the president’s disdain. “Monsieur Macron is arrogant and has little respect for the people,” says Loup.
A first day of protests, on November 17th, drew some 280,000 yellow vests nationwide. A week later, less than half that number took to the streets. But a protest in Paris turned violent when shop windows were smashed on the Champs-Elysées, and barricades were set alight. Riot police dispersed protesters with water cannons and tear-gas. Sandra made the trip up to Paris from Evreux to take part in those protests, and blames infiltrators for the violence. For her, the purpose of the revolt is nothing less than the removal of Mr Macron.
France is used to theatrical demonstrations and the revolutionary imagery protesters often embrace. On one roundabout in southern France, gilets jaunes brought along a guillotine and a stuffed effigy of Mr Macron. “When people stormed the Bastille it wasn’t clear what the objective was that day,” declared a far-left deputy on the radio. But the gilets jaunes’ lack of formal leadership makes them volatile and hard to handle.
How long the gilets jaunes last depends partly on whether they can survive an attempted mutation into a more organised movement. Internal rivalries and conflicting objectives could yet be divisive, as could a loss of public support if the movement radicalises. This week, a delegation of gilets jaunes met the environment minister, François de Rugy. But the legitimacy of the emerging spokesmen is uncertain.
Mr Macron tried to defuse the anger this week by adopting a more modest tone: “You’ve said ‘Stop’. I hear that. So we’re going to change our method.” Instead of lecturing the French on the merits of his green policy, he promised to consult them. While he said that he will keep the green taxes in place, he vowed to review tax increases if world energy prices rise. A snap poll suggests nevertheless that 66% of people still back the gilets jaunes, a figure that has been stable throughout the protests.
Over in Evreux town centre, another group of gilets jaunes is blocking access to the prefecture, or departmental administrative building. Three police officers stand on a step between the protesters and the glass entrance. The numbers are thin, but the exasperation is palpable. “France has a social pyramid, and Macron sits on the top,” explains one protester, who works at a fairground. “We want him to smell what it’s like down here at the bottom.”
