Mez and Isaiah Rashad Collab for Soulful Love Song "Hot Spot"
Tumblr media
Mez's elite pen game and strong sense of visual creativity has endeared him to some of the biggest names in rap history. Teeing up his latest high-profile connection, Mez shares "Hot Spot," his new song with Isaiah Rashad. Produced by Monte Booker, Phoelix & Cam O'bi, "Hot Spot" is a Southern-fried slow jam, populated with sensually spindly guitars and a soulful choir bringing the emotion home. Mez works a sing-song flow, sliding between the snares with double-time pledges of devotion: "I'm the plug and you're the outlet, and I really love your outfit/But that sh*t would look much better on the floor," croons Mez. Isaiah Rashad takes a different perspective, reflecting on all the connections he might have missed while living life on the road. Together, the two rappers create a cerebral and yearning anthem for those who haven't yet given up on modern romance. "Hot Spot" is Mez's second high-quality song of 2024, following the vibrant "Call On" ft. Kurtis Wells and its inventive music video.
Mez's upcoming EP is the culmination of his long journey through the music industry. Emerging out of Raleigh in the early 2010s, Mez was a leading light in a fertile NC rap scene that birthed underground and mainstream stars. Mez's sharp lyrics and assured artistic vision helped convince some of music's biggest stars to trust him with their creative visions. Then known as "King Mez," the rapper was one of the driving forces behind Compton, Dr. Dre's long-awaited third album, appearing on nine tracks and writing on several others–his efforts drew praise from the likes of Pitchfork, NPR, Vulture, and many others. Mez has been a regular affiliate of his friend and fellow North Carolinian J. Cole, and has contributed several verses to Dreamville compilations, including Revenge Of The Dreamers III and last year's Creed III: The Soundtrack. Mez is also a renowned video director, stepping behind the camera for clips like J. Cole's "Middle Child" and "a m a r i," Dreamville's "Sleep Deprived" (on which he also raps), plus videos for Ari Lennox, Isaiah Rashad, and more.
Now, Mez steps back into the forefront, armed with his own message and more than enough talent to make it known. Stay tuned for much more from the multi-talented artist in the near future, including the Mez's self-directed video for "Hot Spot," coming next week.

Red Bull 1520 Red Bull Spiral Drops Another One
Tumblr media
A month ago, Red Bull kicked off the newest hip-hop offering on its Red Bull 1520 platform, a space dedicated to lovers of hip-hop. In the first episode, Coast Contra broke it down on Red Bull Spiral. This week Red Bull Spiral is back with new and exciting artists, KenTheMan, Baby Tate, and Kalan.FrFr. It’s a fight to the finish as the performers come fully prepared to demonstrate what they are working with.  Free Style Red Bull Spiral is the latest outlet for hip-hop heads’ listening pleasure. Artists are flown out to Red Bull’s LA Studio and given the opportunity to show their ability to deliver rapid-fire freestyle. And there is no let-up and no breaks. It is just ready, action, go. And this time, Ken the Man, Baby Tate, and Kalen.FrFr is center stage. Red Bull Spiral Performer #1: KenTheMan KenTheMan is a female emcee from Texas, credited as an artist who broke out in 2020.  As Preview notes, “The release from her debut EP "4 da 304’s” upped her profile in a big way, soaring past 10 million streams on Spotify. " KenTheMan is also known for her and Two Chainz collaborative work, “Rose Gold Stripper Pole.” https://youtu.be/umCqqV5rnww   And just over a month ago, the up-and-comer earned quite an honor. She was chosen as one of nine emerging performers for the First on SoundCloud 2022 class. Positioning herself as one to watch, she comes to deliver a little something for the people on the most recent episode of Red Bull Spiral. Red Bull Spiral Performer #2: Baby Tate   Baby Tate, who also comes in as one of the freestyle contenders on Red Bull Spiral, is another rising Female Emcee. Lyricism runs like blood through Baby Tate’s veins, as Tate is the offspring of Dionne Farris, a Grammy-nominated songwriter. However, it’s not just raw talent that undergirds Tate’s ambition. The Georgia native has taken the time to fine-tune her abilities. As Billboard notes, even in her earlier years, “She explored classical music, experimented with sound independently, and sharpened her songwriting and production skills.” Since those earlier years, her craft has continued to blossom. In 2021 Tate signed with a major record label. And one of her tremendous boasts is, as Billboard continues , her collaborative work with J. Cole on Dreamville’s "Revenge of the Dreamers III. "For those unfamiliar, tune in to see Baby Tate step up to the mic giving fans a taste of her talent. https://youtu.be/MUjXEBrJ40s Red Bull Spiral Performer #3 Kalen.FfFr Kalan brings his skill straight from California, his native soil. Like his compadres on the Red Bull stage Kalen, too, has been nurturing his gift for years, beginning earnestly in his teenage years. Kalen continued to pour into that passion throughout high school and college. In 2016, after graduating, Kalen released “Bandz” and “21”. https://youtu.be/z_ieoWXBOOM But it wasn’t until 2021 that he began solidifying his presence with the release of the project "Twofr 2." According to AllMusic, Roc Nation picked him up as an artist on its label that same year. 2021 was a massive year for Kalan as he also launched his breakout tour. Now Kalen is showing listeners exactly how he unleashes his raw inner beast on the Red Bull Spiral platform. https://youtu.be/pV-cZ07wzvk In Closing The newest episode of Red Bull Spiral dropped on April 5th. And it’s a sweet drop that fans of freestyle want to be sure to check out, Most amazingly, it only takes four minutes to catch up on the non-stop flow. North Carolina's Mez Shares The Loading EP + "Hot Spot" Video ft. Isaiah Rashad
Tumblr media
Making waves for over a decade for his immaculate pen game and keen visual eye, North Carolina rapper Mez has guided the creative of many of the game's biggest artists. Finally ready for his moment in the sun, the multi-talented artist comes through with The Loading EP, his first official project of the streaming era. The seven track EP covers miles of ground, following Mez's perspective as he explores the nature of love and friendship on "Around The World," with help from Leon Bridges, reflects on a cold and uncaring universe in the contemplative "Devil Is A Judge," and rattles off tongue-twisting tales about his pursuit of the bag in lead single "Call On" ft. Kurtis Wells. The diverse EP features production from talents as diverse as Los Angeles's Tae Beast, Chicago underground sound architects Monte Booker, Phoelix & Cam O'bi, hard-hitting Atlanta native DJ Mark B, and more. Featuring additional guest appearances from Isaiah Rashad, MAVI, SAINt JHN, and Childish Major, The Loading EP is available everywhere via Mass Appeal.
Says Mez about the new EP: "The Loading EP symbolizes the (Un) Loading of my thoughts. My ideas. My fears. The (Re) Loading of my love for music after so many things felt in the way. The (Down) Loading of new energy. New courage and strength. New ideas. The Loading EP is conceptualized around the way I think. Making connections between things that might not always fit together. Creating something from the void in-between. Just bossing up in general."
The EP arrives with a brand new video for "Hot Spot," the standout collaboration with Isaiah Rashad, directed by Mez himself.  Produced by Monte Booker, Phoelix & Cam O'bi, the track finds the two talented musicians reflecting on relationships they’ve had over the years, never giving up on romance despite its challenges. Mez compares his unbreakable connection with his girl to a phone’s hotspot, taking the metaphor even further in the video with his love interest's face being covered by a screen. Isaiah Rashad delivers a verse for the yearners, starting off completely separated on the screen from his love interest but slowly working his way closer to her as his verse goes on, symbolizing that modern romance is indeed possible.
The Loading EP marks the latest phase in a long and varied career for Mez. Most recently, Mez earned a writing credit on J. Cole's chart-topping surprise album Might Delete Later, contributing to the Ari Lennox-sang hook on opening song "Pricey" ft. Ari Lennox, Young Dro & Gucci Mane.
With The Loading EP out now, Mez proves that he is an artistic force to be reckoned with in the rap game and beyond. Stay tuned for more.
