@asktheritobowyer, I respect your choice to confront Master Revali about his behaviour towards Link. I won’t deny the fact that he has areas where he can improve. Everyone does. You shared your opinions truthfully without any malice, and I can tell you want to see Master Revali better himself moving forward.
However, I don’t think it’s fair to view Link as the sole saviour of Rito Village. Both Master Revali and Link were defeated by the Calamity years before we were alive. Link was revived without his volition and was left with a heavy burden as you mentioned, but Master Revali didn’t have any chance to redeem himself until recently. Link had time to adapt to our world for much longer and managed to build connections across all of Hyrule over the past few years. It’s only natural for Master Revali to feel isolated, even from his own people.
Master Revali’s bravado is just a mask to hide his vulnerabilities and guilt. He’s harder on himself than anyone else. I’ve witnessed Master Revali’s lowest moments before and you’re right; him and Link are much more alike than others may realize. Both of them have a tendency to act without any regard to their own well being in different ways. People probably find it strange that I’m more patient with Master Revali than expected, but it’s only because they haven’t seen him in such a self-destructing state.
Master Revali may have not earned your respect, but he’s certainly earned mine; before and after he returned to the living world. Master Revali will always be the Pride of Rito Village in my eyes. Even if he argues with me, or insults me, or drinks through all my alcohol containers, I know deep inside he’s remorseful of his actions and yearns for a place to belong. I’m proud to have him as a part of my family, flaws and all.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I have two sons I need to find on Medoh. Don’t try to stop me.

uh oh guys, hot take alert:
i think revali may have invented hand held aerial archery HEAR ME OUT- (this is a long one boys)
okay. evidence one: why the fuck would a rito shoot like that. like, it makes nearly zero sense, it would be such a hindrance to their flight and their main stake is that they can be higher than you can shoot whilst still pinging you... which revali has overcome with his gale
evidence two: tulin and the concept arts. obviously rito style archery would be held in their talons. before totk came out idk if anyone had really thought about it too much, but the developers had, as you can see in concept art (from the creating a champion book). and like, its logical, powerful, and allows for peak maneuverability. also, when in flight revali (and teba) holds his bow in his talons before switching to his wings. surely its easier to keep it in your wing (obvi ignoring the effects to flight but hes doing that anyway firing the damn thing) rather than switch back and forth- unless you were taught that way, because why would you hold it elsewhere, you need it in your talons to shoot.
evidence three: we dont see any other rito do it (...kind of). throughout botw and totk, we never see another rito flying with a bow in their hands. in totk, its mostly tulin, who holds it in his talons, but in botw the big one is teba. during the medoh quest, he actually gives *link* his bow, and therefore does no shooting in the sky. teba and harth had both tried to take on medoh before, but we never see this, and while they holds their bows in their hands *on the ground,* we dont see it.
...except for aoc (uh, spoilers?). there are two times we see a rito other than revali hold their bow in their hand for aerial archery. but it is not with any rito soldiers, either during cutscenes (the bows are only on their backs) or gameplay (they swoop down, and then hand hold bows on ground. they arent seen flying at all but thats prolly for the same reasons as botw: its very hard to code that (and so they write the lore around that fact)). the first time we actually see another rito do this, we dont see it. Its teba, as he comes thru the portal, but all we see is the arrow shot, and then him freeze frame with the bow in one wing. we dont see the bow in his hand for the rest of the fight. the second time we actually see him fighting like this, it *is* in the air, but its noticeably different to revali.
hes a lot slower, it clearly takes a LOT more effort to shoot the bow, and he only pulls off one arrow at a time. its canon that revalis bow is heavier/harder to draw, and he manages to effortlessly stream arrows whilst fucking floating midair. i think teba, forever a revali fanboy, heard of how the champion mastered his own style of archery and sought to teach himself, but lacked one key thing: revalis mastery of wind.
evidence three point five: revali could easily use his powers to hold him in the air longer/slow his descent long enough for him to fire his shots. it makes sense, really. if he can use his gale to propel him, he can sit on the updraft for a hot sec, or even curve the path to carry him along while he lines up the shot. this would mean he wouldnt need to flap as much as other rito, who would obviously need to keep flying
evidence four: revalis fighting style and his needs. revali works with non rito, obviously. he needs to be able to communicate with them on the battlefield, and they wont understand the muffled chirps if he holds his string in his beak, so he needs his mouth free to speak hylian. also, revalis main tactic is fly up with gale, shoot, fall, either shoot more or use velocity and weight to knock around opponents, and then fly back up. he often needs both feet planted firmly on the ground to get a good hold of his gale, something that is harder to do if you have a bow in the way.
also, take for example the kick he delivers link in their fight (aoc). that would possibly damage the bow, or give the opponent a chance to grab his weapon, if he held it in his talons. and to switch from feet to back is a risky maneuver during freefall, and could lose precious seconds, and then when you get back in the air you need to get it off your back again. its much easier to keep the bow loosely in your wing the whole time, meaning your free to attack melee, land and rise all while not wasting a single moment getting your next shot lined up.
so yeah, i think the rito used the talon grip for aerial archery, and would often use the hand held method on the ground for a variety of reasons (more powerful shots?, easier in some situations like hunting), but revali was perhaps the first to use hand held aerial, another reason he was one of the greatest archers ever.

I actually think most of the mechanics and puzzles are really good (I probably have more fun in Zonai shrines then sheikah#on average) I also think expanding to the sky and underground was really smart and good. 🏔🧚‍♀️😤 for the asks?
🗻 If you were in a Zelda game, where would you live? What would you be doing? (aside from being the hero or princess)
Ooh! Such a good question! I think I would be an NPC who lived in Hateno, but was a traveling historian intent on finding out more about the calamity 10,000 years ago, and uncovering who the champions were 100 years ago. I’d quite like to be the NPC who gives you lots of fun tidbits of info on other characters, as a result.
Like if I ask for 200 of a certain item, I’ll tell you about something. Maybe every item has a secret. The silent princesses has a secret about Zelda, but an intimate one, like her favourite time of day or where she would go to escape her duties or what she wished she could do or something.
Maybe all the flowers have what the champions loved or enjoyed. If you give enough Swift Violets I could tell you about the love princess Mipha had for Link, or enough cool Saffinas and you would find out about Revali’s love (platonic or romantic) for his best friend or another NPC who is never mentioned again.
It would be the plot bunny fanfic gold mine dialogue, everything would be fun little facts about characters, mostly the champions, but on occasion in the research, I would find out about Teba’s allergy to Amaranth pollen, or Sidon’s favourite meal or something, and it would be different for every item. Maybe a bit like the korok quests but for lore.
🧚 Favorite Zelda companion?
That is so hard!!! Linebeck is awesome and so is Midna, but I really love Fi. If the champions count then its an easy win for them, but if not, I think because Fi influenced some of Botw and was so sweet (albeit annoying sometimes) in SS, I’ll have to go for Fi. It’s very close though. I love all the companions.
😤 Any Zelda-related Pet Peeves?
Honestly I think one would be the lack of the clawshot in Botw, I loved that thing! Another would be how repetitive Fi was in SS. I think my most hated mechanic (and therefore pet peeve) would be timed missions. They’re so hard!
I also find the fact you can’t change which thing you’re looking at (aka missions vs plot-missions vs cooking etc) on the AoC map a little annoying. There’s so much to look at (YEY theres a lot to do and I love the game) but also. There’s so much to look at (I can’t concentrate and am getting overwhelmed).
Thank you so much for the ask this was so much fun!!

Master Revali,
I’ve recently been informed of your posters hanging near the entrance to Rito Village. As Rito Elder, I must warn you that this isn’t allowed; you do not have the authority to ban individuals from our village without my permission. Link and Zelda are welcome at any time and if you disagree, at least follow the correct protocol to ensure your complaint is processed officially. All Rito are required to do this, and unfortunately you are no exception.
At this point in time, I’ve only seen two posters signed with your name. If there are any others I’ve missed, please let me know. It’s crucial for these posters to be collected for future reference.
Signed,
Rito Elder Teba
Tumblr media
Has anyone ever told you about that time Princess Zelda tried to get Link to eat a frog alive?
Thank you for this insight, I have taken actions accordingly.
Tumblr media
I'm sure Teba will be delighted to have one less thing on his plate as the new Elder.

Hello Harth, how do you feel about this whole buisiness with the hundred year old Rito Champion turning up in the present? Do you get along with him?
Why hello there. I suppose it's natural people would want hear my thoughts regarding this topic.
Revali suddenly popping up in the present day, honestly wasn't to surprising to me. Truth be told, so much crazy stuff has happened all around Hyrule the past couple of years, that it would have to take something truly bizarre, for people to be at a loss for words. We had Sheika tech all over Hyrule one moment, only for them to disappear, and then a bunch of Zonai ruins show up instead. After a while you kind of get used to these kinds of things.
As for my thoughts on Revali? He's...quite the ahem ahem personality.
We have interacted a bit, and while our interactions have been fairly amicable, he's honestly not someone I would want to be spending a lot of time around, or someone I'd want my daughter to be associating with to much either.
I always did wonder why the Rito's always spoke of his feats, but never him as a person. If the other champions were remembered for their talents and personality, why not him?
Teba used to speak very fondly of him, but then he suddenly stopped, almost like he discovered something he didn't want to. It speaks volumes, when Teba is adamant that Link become a role model for Tulin, rather than the supposed pride of our people.
I asked Link what the Rito Champion was like, after discovering he's the same hero from a century ago, but he claimed to not remember, which I knew was a bold faced lie. It's like Link was trying to intentionally hide something about him. Teba's not the only one with a keen eye. He may be good at masking his emotions, not so much unpleasant memories. One look at Link's eyes told me everything I needed to know.
I asked Kass about Revali to, and he told me that sometimes ignorance is the best thing for others. Meeting Revali in person, I can see what he meant. The very person the Rito's respected so highly, in truth didn't have the most appealing personality, and wasn't on best terms with the Hero of Hyrule, because he deemed himself as superior.
Revali is talented there's no doubt about that. His skills are the real deal, his arrows fly true, I can respect his capabilities as a Rito warrior, I will never downplay the efforts he made to get to where he is. But humility is clearly not something he considers necessary. He always seems to seek validation, never sparing a second to display his superior skills to others, or opinions about how much better he is, and seems to enjoy belittling Link, which I absolutely will not tolerate.
While I'm not one to bring up the past, Link succeeded where he failed, and saved Rito Village, as well as our lives twice over. He is in no position to claim superiority over him, nor can he dismiss Link's many contributions in aiding the Rito people. Link has spent many years helping us all out, never once asking for anything in return. Being the Rito Champion, doesn't mean I should just suddenly like him more now that he's back, because he's of the same race as me, and held a position that represented our people. That kind of respect is earned, not given freely.
Revali does have a compassionate side, and his desire to protect Rito Village is genuine. He loves our people with all his heart. However that does not excuse his behaviour, nor his shameful treatment of Link.
Everyone within Rito Village highly respects Link for everything he's done for them, and I'm sure over time it'll be quite the reality check for Revali. To find whatever adoration he may have had in the past, isn't quite so prevalent here in the present, and continuing to belittle Link won't do his reputation any wonders.
Teba sees Link as his kid, and most certainly wouldn't hesitate to speak up for him, even to Revali. Tulin looks up to Link like an idolized older brother, and even considers him as such, not to mention Link in many ways helped nurture him into what he is today. I myself am also very fond of him, because of the positive effect he's had on my family, and Rito Village as a whole. I'm sure many others within the village share similar sentiments.
In any case, I can talk to Revali just fine. We can hold conversations without any issue. But if he expects me to always take his side, and prefer him over others because he's the Rito Champion, he'll find this Bowyer isn't quite so tolerant.

Can we analyse Tulin for a bit?
Apart from being the keet birb boy, perhaps what makes his character so enthralling is how it so brilliantly reflects and offers commentary on the influences that have shaped him.
Whether that be Revali, his father Teba, and ESPECIALLY Link. Hell, it's no wonder that Link & Tulin have garnered such a sibling dynamic. Tulin essentially IS Link, from a time before the burden of responsibility and pain caused Link to cave in on himself pre-Breath of the Wild.
Right down to the veteran warrior father figure (Link's father was captain of the guard) and their acceptance of a newfound legacy out of forthright integrity. Tulin, at this point in his life, has yet to give himself away until there's nothing of him left to give, and let's pray he never needs to.
But Tulin would do that in a heartbeat, if called upon. He is very much his father's son.
You can see it in how archtypical childish spunk is tempered, like steel, by Teba's down-to-earth bluntness and sheer work ethic.
(BTW I wonder if Link sees his own father in Teba? That'd check out.)
But what caught me most pleasantly off-guard is Tulin's skepticism, which has become one of his most compelling traits for me. It's not something you would expect.
He did not believe that the Stormwind Ark existed, and while ultimately proven wrong, it frankly wasn't an illogical assumption to make. Tulin clearly thought through that opinion. He'd also grown frustrated that the Rito placed their faith on a songbook miracle — a eucatastrophe, if you will — instead of something more concrete like personal skill or, say, Link's whole-ass existence.
The second Link arrived and offered his aid, Tulin accepted his help without hesitation. He turned his skepticism inward to reevaluate his own tenets. And it's as a duo that they brought about said eucatastrophe through no one's strength but their own. They are siblings, Your Honor. Aryll 2.0
(If Revali had been blessed with a support network saying "it's okay to accept help. no man is an island," doubtless he still would have perished in Vah Medoh. But there would be less of an ego to shatter. He would have faced death with less blind panic and more dignity. And most importantly, he'd have other people to bolster the wind beneath his wings during his short life. (At the very least, Revali would not have as big an ass not be as big an ass, just as Tulin would be a different person without his family.)
dammit quaquaval you have RUINED me
Also, one thing that everyone seems to miss is just how deceptively intelligent Tulin turns out to be. This kid fuckin' knows his stuff. His mastery of aerodynamics beyond the instinctual is almost on par with Revali at such a young age. And how many precision headshots has his avatar saved your ass with, don't lie.
He somehow managed to follow his father back through time. Tulin can see Koroks.
It's not the same kind of passion-fuelled intellect as, say, Zelda has. More of an unyeilding conviction to learn all he can and put it into practice. About as understated a quality as Yunobo's inexplicable business acumen and economic sense.
As his mother Saki put it, for Tulin to develop as an individual, he needs to experience more of reality and its hardships. Shooting bullseyes and improving one's flying prowess / wind magic can't contend with genuine combat. True to her word, Tulin had to experience mistakes firsthand, and critically examine his own naïve ways of thinking in order to take those necessary steps.
...
So then, uh, is it wrong for me to wish something horrible upon him, if only to witness the positive character growth that springs from it? Tulin isn't the sort who'll shatter under pressure, like Revali did at the end of his life, or like Link did under the weight of expectation. Buckle, yes — but not break. Tulin's steadfast conviction, inherited from his father and guided by the people he loves, would assuredly see him through.
In any event, his Hero's Journey isn't close to over. I'd be curious to see Tulin at its conclusion.
tl;dr I wanna Emesis Blue his bitch-ass, AITA?

who’s the best champion? but you can’t say revali…
The other champions have phenomenal powers that cannot be easily achieved in a lifetime, and I respect them all for that.
I would like to know Lady Mipha better though. She can be quite intimidating in the right circumstances, especially when she finds Link with injuries from Master Revali. It’d be interesting to spar with her if I ever have the chance.

@avenin 👀👀 yes I doooo, I do have ocs I would love for people to draw if they're feeling ✨️inspired✨️
Here's their info for anyone who is interested (art is by the fabulous @axidentshappen ily so much thank you for drawing them)
Basht (he/him, 24) is a warrior for the village, he prefers spears over a bow and arrow. He's very sarcastic, and a little prideful, but he's really a softie for anyone he really cares about (the majority of the village)
He has white feathers, golden eyes, and has the very classic rito braids on the side of his head, with Emre's feathers weaved in. The back of his hair is very spikey and short.
Tumblr media
Emre (he/him, 23) is one of the village bards, he can play a variety of instruments, but plays the lute most often, and in the words of Basht, is a little shit. He's very mischievous, but very optimistic and tends to see the best in every situation.
He has lighter blue feathers, with blue eyes, and his hair is all in one braid down his back, with basht's feathers braided in.
Tumblr media
Fun facts about these two:
-they are Teba's great grandparents, and they're a few years older than Revali. The ages seen above being their ages when the Calamity returns (I view Revali as 17 or 18 when the Calamity happens)
-Basht used to have hair almost as long as Emre's, but in his early days of spear training, his hair got caught on the blade of the spear when he pulled it off his back, and it gave him a very impromptu haircut. After that Emre fixed it by cutting it the style it is now, and even if he sometimes misses his long locks, he prefers how easy it is to manage short, and doesn't want to put in the effort of growing it out
- Emre brought the concept of rickrolling to Hyrule, which for him is usually hiding in places around rito village where no one can see him and playing the song, or giving performances and then just suddenly changing whatever normal song he's playing
-Emre was the one to ask Basht out, he asked him out by writing him a song and playing it in front of Basht's entire warrior training class. He said yes, obviously but is supposedly still planning his revenge for the mocking from his training mates
-They're mentioned a grand total of one time in The Champions Bond. They originally started off as just two random names I threw in there for convenience, and now, I love them.
"Link knows what emeralds mean to a Rito. He had been there when Basht was flaunting the overly flashy beads he had commissioned to ask Emre to marry." (The Champions Bond, Ch 1)
-They have a daughter, a three year old named Kaita. She takes after Basht more so than Emre in looks, but her personality so far is all Emre. Very sassy, and has an affinity for music.
Tumblr media
-After the Calamity, Basht starts training Kaita self defense just in case the Calamity somehow manages to break out of the castle. When she grows up a little bit more, he starts actually teaching her how to fight, and use a spear and bow and arrows. She grows up to be a warrior like Basht, but still loves playing the lute with Emre
Hope yall like my little rito family, here's a family picture of them together, ask me more questions please I love talking about them

A Revali Fanfic Recommendation
I urge you all to put your life on hold for a moment and go read this brilliant fanfiction:
A hundred years after the fall of Hyrule to Calamity Ganon, and the hero Link has finally sealed the darkness and freed the Divine Beasts of their curse - and with it, their pilots are finally free. But not just as spirits. Awake once again, the four Champions of old have a second chance at life and must re-adjust to this future world with their decendants. Well - all except for one Champion, who doesn't have a decentant. Or even anyone left alive that knew him. Teba is happy to take in his revived ancient idol as one of his own, but sharing a living space with a hundred year old Champion with an ego the size of his divine beast and who might have some issues he's not willing to share can be a lot sometimes and they don't always see eye to eye. Revali thinks he should return to leading the new generation of Rito warriors. Teba thinks this actual child should never have been leading warriors or fighting a war in the first place. Tulin is just excited to have the infamous Rito Champion in his house.
Beautifully written and lovingly crafted, this baby can fit so much trauma and whump into the most gut-wrenching and heat-breakingly found family story you may ever read. 130,000 words, 36 chapters (and still regularly updating!), and a CRIMINALLY low number of kudos. If that doesn't sway you, here is some gushing under the cut <3
You think you've read a champions revival fic before? This will have you saying "how the FUCK have I not seen this before" and completely change the way you view everything (mild exaggeration. m i l d). We have all of your favourite revali tropes: being a dick and getting owned, being a dick and being right, getting own and never showing those feelings to the light of day, getting killed, getting unkilled and loved, showing emotions but being super weird and revali about it, bonding with tulin!!, bonding with teba and the rest of rito village, bonding with the champions, having panic attacks and trauma, vah medoh being the best ever, being a terrifying force of nature, being an idiot kid, and so much more!
Do you like grumpy dad teba? Do you like revali swallowing his pride? Do you like revali immediately spitting his pride back up and being a bitchy bird? Do you like mipha and revali as gossip buddies? Do you like the complete and utter fool revali makes of himself everytime he so much as hears the name link? Do you like people seeing right through his facade and calling him out on it?
AND NOT TO MENTION THE WORLD BUILDING??? this fic is so in depth of the political climates, racism, lore, changes in culture during times of war, colonisation, biology of the races and just fucking everything?? It adds so much life to the world of hyrule I am genuinely shocked at how much this person clearly loves these games (botw/totk/aoc) and they are able to incorporate all of this amazing information in a way that flows so naturally and just hhrnngngg I am fucking insane about it. THE SCIENCE, oh my god how did I forget all the wonderous thoughts surrounding the divine beasts and the sheikah tech, oh god and how they write the magic system? Guys I swear it's so good.
Characterisation is on point, everyone feels so full of life and that they are reacting exactly how you would expect them too, and they just seem so real, like they are right beside you as you're reading. The author does an IMMACULATE job of drawing you in and making you feel a part of the story, all the while being just beautifully written?
Don't get me started on the attention to rito culture. I have never seen someone pour so much love into something before, genuinely on of the greatest things I've seen. I've always had a fascination over how the races of hyrule view each other, similarities and differences, how their cultures and histories intertwine, and conflicts that may arise. But oh. my. god. My jaw was on the floor every time, it's so rich and beautiful but not without the horrors (and oh god, they are Horrors tm) and again it's just so real!!!
Be warned, however, that there is gore and viscera and terror and hurt and war crimes and death (duh), but for each terrible thing to happen it is repaid tenfold in love and kindness somewhere down the line. (Unless you are into hurt no comfort, then sorry buddy!) It is a beautiful narrative and the exploration of trauma and self is mind boggling and just go read it!!! 😭 😭 😭 I just love this fic so much, it has instantly sky-rocketed to one of my top 3 favourite fics I've ever read, and I'm so grateful to have found it and now be along for the ride that if I could bring that to one more person then by god I will fucking do it

Ello! I was wondering if you are still doing Legend of Zelda requests. If so I’d like to ask for a rather simple topic. How would our precious bird boi Revali, And if you can Teba and Tulin (Tulin platonically of course), react to a Rito Reader who lacks the ability to fly? It’s not discussed how or why the reader cannot fly, if they were born with the disability or if they lost it, either way they are now the first earthbound rito to live in Rito village. Would they try and help her, or would they listen to the new ways reader has learned to get around hyrule without even needing to fly. Would they tease her or feel pity? Really I just want to see how they would react to see someone without the ability they pride themselves for. Thank you for listening and thank you so much if you do this request!
Love, me 💚

Revali was making fun of you at first. Rito who cannot fly? Pff, are you even a rito then??
It was for a long while, untill he heard you talking with other person from village about all the difficulties you have with such disability...
Revali felt ashamed after that... he knew that it wasn't exactly his fault that you can't fly, but he couldn't help it. What if he lost ability to fly or was born without it...? Damn, life would be boring and useless for him then...
Next time you met, rito champion asked if you can go with him. Turned out, he found a spot on rito territory, where wind feels as if you are gliding in the sky... he watched how your feathers flattered and smile appeared on your face...
Revali cannot explain it, but since then he started looking for such places if he was in other parts of Hyrule, telling you about them then you meet.
If he happened to travel with you, he mostly kept close to the land, so you could talk, occasionally raising up in the sky to be "your eyes" as warrior called it. Mostly helping to find direction or place to make a stop at.
He was interested in how your life changed, what were you doing now and how you travelled. Revali tried to not raise questions about your flying ability, cursing himself if he made too harsh comment about how much shame it is that you cannot join him on his flying trips.
He even asked Zelda and champions if where are devices that could help you...

Teba's heart aches every time he sees you. Man isn't one to show emotion easily, but sight of you walking on your two just to get from one place to another... it makes him sad.
He saw you not once, while you were walking around rito territory. Where everyone flew, you walked on foot. It was confusing for him, till he confronted you about it. Warrior regretted it moment explanation left your mouth.
You sounded like you were over it, at least you tried to sound so. But he saw how hurt you looked, watching young birds learn to fly...
Teba would protect you if other villagers start acting rude around you.
He probably would ask Link to tell him where he got paraglider or even Purah to make something for you.
If it works, he would happily help you get used to it. It not, rito warrior will gift you something else, that would remind you that you are just as much rito as he and others, even if you cannot fly.

Tulin, oh sweet boy.
First thing first, he didn't know it's possible. Then Tulin asked you about it, he wasn't ready to get such answer. He apologized.
Boy went to his parents, asking what he can do for you, then they didn't have ideas he went to Link and Zelda.
Young rito and hero of Hyrule decided to teach you use paraglider.
If it works out well, he will take you to the places he likes, helping you rise up with his ability.
If not, well... he tried. But! Tulin will be happy to hear about your life. He is so damn curious about your everyday experience.
Tulin would be so happy if you explained him how you travel, or how you get to the places he would normally get by the sky. He even tried to travel with you, but his legs got tired with so much walking.
Young sage would visit you often, introduce you to his parents, Link, Zelda and other sages in case you will need help in other regions.
He will also show you his ability, sometimes fooling around and blowing wind at you. It becomes kind of your 'hello' with him.

What are your thoughts on Revali being portrayed usually in a negative way?
Revali to me is kind of mixed bag when it comes to how to portray him. Removing comedic elements out of the picture, one needs to understand the negative parts, without downplaying them, while acknowledging the good parts of his character.
Revali is often portrayed negatively due to his arrogant demeanour and dismissive attitude, particularly towards Link. His confidence in his abilities as a skillful warrior and Rito champion can come off as hubris, leading many to view him as unsympathetic and deserving of his karmic fate where he died, and essentially faded out of history with barely anyone remembering him. This perception is reinforced by his interactions with Link, where he often belittles him, many times, a lot of which is unwarranted, and wastes no time listing his advantages, while constantly talking down to Link, which makes it very apparent he seems himself as superior to him, and if we take Age of Calamity into account, then he would go on to refer to himself and his Divine Beast as they key to beating the Calamity, instead of all parties being crucial.
When Teba met Link for the first time, he was dismissive of him, not because he thought he was better, but because he literally knew nothing about Link. Once he saw what Link was capable of, he immediately acknowledged his skill, and from there his respect for him only grew. At no point did he ever think of himself as superior to Link, despite being very capable himself. It's understandable why Revali wouldn't be seen favourably, when he had the complete opposite approach.
People's negative portrayal of Revali can be seen as justified to an extent, because his behaviour initially overshadows his more nuanced qualities. For instance, while he displays a strong sense of pride in himself and competitiveness, these traits can easily be interpreted as self-centeredness, especially when he's displaying them in an extremely negative way, which just so happens to be a lot of the time. Additionally, his struggle with vulnerability and willingness to confront his insecurities, especially regarding his relationship with Link, may not be as visible to people focused on his brash exterior.
Revali does have his good side. He genuinely loves his people. He genuinely wants to stop the Calamity. He genuinely did put in the work to become as good as he did. He can feel empathy. There is a reason why he is the way he is. He's not heartless. He can feel and show affection.
Of course, that doesn't mean it's okay to do or say the things that he did. You can be a rival to someone, without being condescending to them. If Link has already been established as an exception knight by all of Hyrule, you can't just dismiss that, and then claim your better in every way, or downplay his achievements and elevate yours. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses.
Zelda had similar issues with Link initially, while having her own baggage to deal with. But she eventually looked past them, made the effort to get to know him, and saw that Link had it worse than she did, to the extent that he literally became mute to cope. Why wasn't Revali able to do the same? In fact, of all the characters there, Revali and Link have the most in common. They're literally going through the exact same thing. Their upbringings are incredibly similar. For all intents and purposes they should be the closest, or at the very least Revali should have been able to see past Link's silent exterior, which the other Champions were able to do.
All in all, it's essential to recognize that his character's depth can be overlooked. Revali's arrogance stems from a desire to prove himself and to be respected by his peers, highlighting his complexities and internal conflicts. This duality adds layers to his character, which can him more relatable. While the initial impression of Revali might lead many to view him negatively, and to be fair they're not really wrong to see him in a negative light, precisely because of how he acts despite his good traits. However those who dig deeper into his motivations and struggles can appreciate the more relatable aspects of his character. Thus, the negative portrayal often arises from a surface-level interpretation, which can overlook the depth that Revali ultimately embodies.
