On March 2, the Museum of Russian Icons in Clinton, MA, opened an exhibition titled “Icons & Retablos: Images of Devotion.” Created in collaboration with the University Art Museum at New Mexico State University (NMSU), it features an amazing selection of Orthodox and Mexican religious art. What might seem like a surprising combination is actually an incredibly thoughtful and informative project that highlights the stylistic and ideological similarities between Orthodox icons and Mexican retablos. “Icons & Retablos: Images of Devotion” is on view at the Museum of Russian Icons through August 27, 2023.

The Harwood Museum of Art in Taos NM, needs to do some fact checking. The latest display of "Unknown" retablos erases our heritage. Thanks to artist Brandon Maldonado Vallejos for bringing this to light and creating change for the better.

My kitchen was filled with cockroaches. My cat was very lazy to catch them. I didn’t know how to get rid of them. Saint Paschal gave me an idea to bring all my farm animals to the kitchen—the pigs, the ducks, the chicken. They ate all the cockroaches saving my kitchen, although they dirtied it up a little.

I used to have horrible nightmares with demons in the darkness surrounding me. I prayed to my guardian angel, and one night I had a dream with an angel who appeared from the darkness holding a sword in his left hand. He cut the darkness, and the light went through it. The demons, taken by surprise, rushed from under my bed and disappeared. I thank my guardian angel because after that night I have only light and pleasant dreams. (x)

I spoiled my dog by letting it eat from the table. When I married a marvelous woman, I was afraid she wouldn’t let the animal to eat with us. But instead, I found out she herself had two educated pigs who also eat from the table. I thank the Virgin of San Juan for we are one very happy family.
