This shot of chanterelle mushrooms reminds me that this year was a bumper crop for morel mushrooms on our properties. They started in early May and kept coming until a week ago. Large and plentiful, we shared them with our neighbor to the east. I call him our tree man because he hand-plants native trees all around his property and the wetlands. The wetland tamaracks are my favorite trees because of their color in the spring and fall. // I am most grateful for this neighbor who loves the Lake Minnetonka landscape as much as I do. He and his son have helped me with cutting invasive species like buckthorn and garlic mustard. We share news of our seedling trees like growth of our families - native sugar maples and bitternut hickory grow now in places like they did decades ago. Our neighbors are good people as we say in Minnesota. // Contrastingly, we have issues with neighbors to the north and east of us who cut trees on our land, and mar our property with trash and graffiti. One neighbor cut a path with a commercial mower right through the middle of our property so he had a path to the state trail between us. Today I finally added more mycelium and substrate to a small plot that I’ve been working on. There were mushrooms about two months ago, I left them hoping for more growth but when I returned to harvest they were gone, the chickens, ducks or turkeys had gotten to them. Well, they will find protection their now and I’ll increase it as I see growth. “Unfortunately, white sage is difficult to grow in captivity and is largely wild-crafted, which threatens native populations and since it's really not part of European-based traditions, we really don't need it. Our European spiritual ancestors burned a lot of different herbs in their practices, but white sage was not among them. If you feel the need to use sage, garden sage is a suitable substitute. ... And then this one mentions Indigenous practises being “borrowed” which is *eyeroll* but here is some info for Euro-descendent witches who are appropriating Indigenous practises :

“In Europe plants that were traditionally used in smoke purification included vervain, mugwort, pine and juniper. Often herbs were dried as loose leaf and burned on charcoal or thrown onto fires; vervain and mugwort work better dried as loose leaves. Mugwort is amazing. I’m sure a little more digging (this “research” took less than 10 minutes) would reveal even more accessible Euro practises. 

If you have been a helper to an Indigenous traditional Elder or invested a lot of time learning a tradition from an Indigenous mentor, taking the time and paying respect through reciprocity protocols, and they have passed on knowledge of plants such as sage and sweetgrass to you and encouraged you to use it, even gifted you with it, that sounds respectful. If you have been privileged enough to have these experiences be humble about them and remember that if you are Euro you are never under any circumstances entitled to BIPOC cultural traditions and medicines. 

Please be mindful that these traditions have been coopted and watered down by commercial interests looking to capitalize on Indigenous customs and medicines. They are NOT BORROWED; they are taken without permission and often without any protocol, and without any of the original teachings. This can slowly erode the cultural meaning of the tradition from its origin when the appropriators have more hegemonic power and are dominant in the society plunked on top of “borrowed” (stolen) land.

"Land of the rising Sun" - #secretplaces never stay #secrets for long. Recently found out a locals #hangout, "The Dirt" was sold off & due to several bad apples, access is now restricted. The area is full of weird #hoodoos (pictured) that put part of #bistibadlands to shame, as well as old ruins, petroglyphs, amazing #hiking and so much more. Met the new security team this #weekend, learned the private owner is struggling with all the vandalism, trash dumping and people trying to get mineral rights to his land. Really feel for the owner.
