Got the opportunity to visit Soweto, a township (aka “the ghetto”) of Johannesburg, originally a place set up by European colonizers for working class Africans (because they were not allowed to live in the city). Its name is an acronym derived from South Western Township. It is the country’s largest township and holds a lot of cultural significance for the liberation of Black South Africans.

We got to visit the former home of Nelson Mandela, one of the most well known political figures and anti-apartheid revolutionaries, as well as got educated on the tragic murder of Hector Peterson and the Youth Uprising of 1976 in Soweto.

So I have to tell you guys, despite constantly sharing travel content, for some reason beauty brands love reaching out to me. 😂

And interestingly enough, I tend to have folks comment on my skin and hair regimen, even in travel.

I’m a minimalist at best, and really only use 3 or 4 products for my hair and skin - which surprises people too, especially when I tell them which products I use topically.

.

But even for myself, I’m always surprised when people ask about my skin for instance, because believe it or not I used to have horrible, acne-prone skin and dark spots. I’ve since gotten that under control, but now I mainly deal with eczema and post inflammatory hyperpigmentation. These are probably two of the most common skin-related issues faced by people of color.

.

When it comes to hair, I’ve always had long hair. But if you’ve followed me long enough, you’ll know I was always protective styling my own hair with natural twists. It was a drastic change when I decided to big chop over a year ago - one in which I’ve embraced since.

.

I have to say, travel has had a great impact on my skin and hair, for the good and the bad. At this point, I kind of just accept it for what it is.

So I guess I’m just curious to ask,

V-Day in Madrid pt.2♥️✨

We had an hour between the time that we arrived at the hotel to when our room would be ready so we decided to go out and explore for that hour, making good use of our time by going shopping. The shopping experience in Europe vs the US is different in the sense that European retailers offer a wider range in their stores then what we are used to back home. The popular retailer Zara which roots come from Spain originating in the 1970's didn't just have a store the size that we are used to seeing in the malls. On Gran Via which is a major shopping area in Madrid had Zara stores that were at least four to five floors, with grand marble staircases and ceiling to floor length mirror that adorned the shops walls throughout giving customers the chance to view themselves in every inch of the store. It was simply Grand.

We also stopped at stores such Primark (which currently houses the largest location in Madrid) , H&M, Bershka, Sephora and smaller shops special to Madrid. An observation that I made from comparing these stores to the US versions is that in Europe their market is geared towards showcasing more of a tailored look with their many styles of blazers, skirts, coats & jackets, trousers and dresses while streetwear is also showcased it is on a smaller scale then in the US.

At the first Zara we visited I found this beautiful black dress with one long sleeved shoulder that would sure come in handy later on. The dress cost approximately 23 euro

Once we settled into our room around 2pm we decided to freshen up and enjoy the rest of the day that we had left and food was the first thing on our minds. We had a reservation at Villa Capri which is an Italian restaurant under the Big Mamma restaurant group that have eateries in cities such as Paris ,London and Marseille. From the moment we walked into the restaurant we understood the inspiration behind the aesthetic. It felt like we were on the Amalfi coast traveling on an opulent boat for a dinner party on the coast.

We had tried three of their cocktails on the menu and loved every single one but the favorite being the Mojitostar which is their rendition of a mojito and it was definitely one the best I have ever had. The other cocktails that we tried were the Big Mamma and the Sr y Sra Fizz which is the pink drink topped with marshmallows. We started off with the Croquestar which is a black truffle, ham and béchamel sauce fried croquette . Black Truffle is a very popular ingredient in Madrid that is also featured on their breakfast sandwiches at Starbucks. For our meal we had the Gnocchi ala Sorrentina which was served in a bread crater and the Mafaldine Al Tartfuo which was another truffle dish with mushrooms. I am not the biggest fan of mushrooms but the way that it was incorporated into the pasta was delicious and we would definitely recommend Villa Capri and Bel Mondo when traveling to Madrid . The service was also amazing as our Waitress was very kind and even asked if we preferred to communicate in Spanish or English.

The weather in Madrid for the four days that we were there was relatively sunny but the temperatures did range from 45 degrees in the morning, high 50's in the afternoons and low 30's in the evening. For our first outing I opted to wear an oversized cream sweater from PrettyLittleThing with a pair of jeans from PLT as well that are my favorite go to jeans at the moment. I chose to pair the outfit with my black chunky Chelsea boots that was also featured on my Fall & Winter clothing favorites. These boots were such a great investment and have been so good to me during the seasons. I topped it with a hat from PLT as well and as I am writing this I'm realizing that most of the clothing pieces, accessories and shoes that I wore from the trip were from PLT so I will try my best to link all of the items that are still available for purchase. Lastly I accessorized with my Canon powershot g7x and Kendrick Trunk bag in blush pink with silver hardware from Brandon Blackwood.
