New pinned post: I'm leaving my askbox open, but I'm taking a few weeks off answering asks. You can still choose to send asks if you wish, and I will get to them in a few weeks.

I'm going to be honest, there's a lot going on in my life right now and I am struggling (but still eating and practicing care of my body as much as I can!) My grandfather is declining in health and experiencing extremely difficult health symptoms, which is hard and scary for my family. My brother is in a mental health crisis and possibly an untreated physical health crisis as well, and progress on that front is frustratingly stagnant. I'm struggling with some stuff going on at work and in my academic career to the point that I'm experiencing extreme self-doubt about being able to go forward. On top of it all I just spent a lengthy weekend with my mother's side of the family who basically gave me my eating disorder and there have been lots of parties and events full of food, which can still be a little hard for me even after all this time, especially with all this other stuff going on.

I want to be honest with my followers - just because I practice a lot of self-care strategies doesn't mean I never struggle. There is a LOT going on in my life and I need to focus all my energy into figuring out how to cope and continue moving forward. I need to put my 100% into self-care to survive for a little while.

I will still be posting on here when I can. And I still have resource links on my main page, as well as an FAQ that people can check out. I hope people are finding it helpful.

Do you have any recommendations for bodyweight workouts someone could do at home? I want to get into strength training but I’m terrified of the weight floor at gyms lol

HI HELLO YES. I absolutely do rec my one and only, beloved, HOT, ass-bursting youtube workout queen Caroline Girvan. Her youtube-only programs were my lifeline during the lockdowns; it's technically a dumbell weight program but you can also do it bodyweight! It plays a lot with variations on exercises / tempo / eccentric contractions etc and it's quite solid progression-wise in terms of actually making you stronger. If you want to get a set of dumbells or hold a pair of water bottles that'll make it more effective, but it's a great workout even bodyweight only.

Here are all her programs playlists; most of the long programs are designed to be done 5x/week, and the short playlists are one week each. She's pretty good at explaining everything in the video (at the beginning, it's a no-talk kind of yt workout) and I really recommend checking them out. I will say I DID get noticeably stronger doing these for about 6 months, although I used weights.

Another very popular (and very effective!) routine is the r/bodyweightfitness recommended progression. That subreddit is a wealth of resources and I really can't recommend their wiki enough, but the downside is that you will need some equipment and that could be a stumbling block (although you might have access to it at your gym)

In general, progressing with bodyweights-only routines is a lot more uneven than with weights, so it can be a bit frustrating, but the reward is that callisthenics-types skills make you cool as hell.

(Also. if it helps. I'm a weight room enthusiast and my askbox is always open if you need any types or anecdotes to demystify it — I promise it's not that scary IF you want to give it a go. But I also know that it can be very scary or just plain boring to some people, and that's valid too — there's a lot of stuff you can achieve without ever touching a barbell or a weight machine)

All Things Concerning Chaos

An unimaginable evil once sealed away is unleashed upon the world due to the fuck-up of one man and his band of thieves. To make the situation worse, he drags the name of his ex down with him and get her and her daughter into just as much trouble by naming them as conspirators. Given prison collars and a time frame of three years they are tasked with finding this evil and resealing it before their time is up and the collars take their lives. ○Steampunk cities, trains, cults, and witches. All set in a world that takes place post an apocalypse. ○Diverse cast of over 12 notable characters! ○Told over the course of three different novels.

Death Rattle

Business partners Roswell and Necro work on cases involving feral Cryptalters that would take the Law & Order branch ages to figure out. With one of them being a Cryptalter himself and the other using a drug called Witchblood to gain Cryptalter-like powers: they make for a good one-two punch out of problems. But things are starting to heat up in the city. A known gang has gained a new head and working with outsiders to make life hell for the average Cryptalter and Ros and Necro are dragged into all of it fairly quickly. Especially when it seems like family is getting involved. ○Urban fantasy in a world that's trying to change with the times. ○Features characters that have lived rent-free in my and my partner's brains for over a decade. ○First book in a potential series!

Murderers Will Foreman and Tina Greene meet due to playing the same underground game in which you get points for killing. Hey, I hope you’re having a good day! I had a very specific question regarding some Jewish characters - feel free to ignore this if you aren’t feeling up to a question like this lol, I just figured I ought to field this idea as a goy.

I’m writing fanfiction, and while the family in question is canonically very fair skinned and fair haired American Jews (presumably ashkenazi) they DO name two of their children after living relatives. For my fic, I am planning on explaining this by making them Shepardic, with the patriarch taking after a non shepardic parent, his wife a convert, and leaving their adopted daughter as ethnically Ashkenazi but raised in their traditions. In this explanation, is there anything potentially offensive I should beware of?

Greetings and salutations! Thank you for reaching out and thinking about how to be sensitive when writing Jewish communities and characters. I hope you have a lovely Whatever You Celebrate!

I'm the daughter of a matrilineal Ashkenazi Jewish woman and a goyish man, so while I will answer as best I can, I encourage you to read Sephardi-specific blogs or resources as well / reach out to folks who have their askboxes open to questions.

A few thoughts come to mind:

Quick note: it's Sephardi or Sephardic (you misplaced the h).

Danger Will Robinson: not all fair-skinned Jews are Ashkenazi and not all Ashkenazi Jews are fair-skinned and/or fair-haired. Around 90% of American Jews do ID as Ashkie or Ashkie + another minhag (so they probably are Ashkenazi in canon, esp if the original creator isn't Jewish), but be careful not to associate particular skin tones with different subcommunities in the Jewish community.

I honestly think you're overthinking this, about Ashkenazi Jews with inherited names. It's really okay (especially if it's canon) to have an Ashkenazi family that occasionally names their kiddos after living people (especially if the living relatives or friends are not themselves Ashkie Jews).

You could also explain it was a snipe at the relatives being named in honor of / some backhanded compliment thing. Or maybe the relatives were supposed to be dead because Whatever and it was an oopsie that way.

An adopted Ashkie child raised by Sephardi parents typically would have the Sephardic minhag [traditions] and - children follow their parents minhag. The convert wife would be whatever minhag she converted into. *Traditionally* family's follow the father's minhag, in practice (especially in the US and pending community availability) it's often more complicated than that.

If the daughter is adopted, maybe she came with the names? Some families change names when they adopt kiddos, some don't.

I would encourage you think more specifically about what kind of Jewish family you're writing and what their practice looks like. It's cool that you're considering the name stuff, but how else do their practices, beliefs, and community membership impact their role in the story? Feel free to DM me or ask again if you'd like some help with that (also would be helpful you include the fandom). Hope this is helpful - feel free to send follow-up or clarifying questions. As always, inviting other Jews (in this case, especially folks from inter-minhag families)

Okay, so writers are always told to write what they know or write based on their experiences, but what if you don't know alot or you haven't experienced the topics and stuff you want to write about?

Hi, Anon! I am actually still a beginner at writing fiction, so I'm not the best person to offer writing advice. Personally, I mostly just try to research when I have knowledge gaps (definitely tried to learn more about amputation and prostheses for some of my Nimona fics!).

Heya! I hope you're having a great day! I saw in your askbox guidelines that you're open to advice asks so I thought I'd drop by but please delete this if you're uncomfortable! I know this is a MASSIVE ask so I really will not be offended if you don't want to answer. Para in this context is meaning another character in my paracosm that I interact with instead of being. If anyone else sees this and wants to add their own opinions in the notes, please do!

I'm really struggling to figure out if I'm plural so I thought I'd get your opinion (/nf) given I've been using the resources off your blog for months LOL. I have a potential headmate who was originally a maladaptive daydreaming para. This para would be a fictive from a popular game. He follows the same archetype I've latched onto for paras since I was little & has told me he sees the other characters as similar to him when asked. I've been daydreaming since I was 4ish, he has been my para since I was 11. I'm currently 17. I'm going to bullet point real quick to stop it being an absolute wall of text! Reasons I have to believe he might be a headmate:

He often expresses different opinions to me or interest in different topics.

He seems to generally know almost all of what's going on/what has happened, but sometimes asks me to remind him or explain something (moreso for stuff several years back).

His voice sounds different in the internal monologue.

I think I've sensed him watching what I've been doing in the past & possibly felt him be triggered by stuff relating to his source.

One of the times he interacted unprompted was due to me being very negatively triggered.

He has gender dysphoria (see the bit below).

He's nothing like me identity wise. He's middle-aged and a cis guy and I'm fairly certain he has a different sexuality.

Reasons I doubt him:

He only speaks once prompted or once I think about him passively, excluding a couple of rare occasions. I very rarely hear from him unprompted at the moment unless I'm stressed.

He has never fronted fully. We might've switched once or twice in the past (though it was more co-fronting). It normally feels like the internal monologue switching to be his in the front & mine in the back. I'd say the terms non-possessive & monoconscious would be most fitting. I think us being able to switch on demand that early though feels wrong - though we can't always. Oh adding it here as it connects but not as a point against him: these 'switches' are sometimes accompanied by gender dysphoria, though I'm genderqueer anyway. His dysphoria is more for being male though (I actually realised I wasn't cis because of him abt 3 years back!).

I can talk to any fictional character I've engaged a lot with due to maladaptive daydreaming. I'm nervous I'm just daydreaming him tbh or forcing his responses bc sometimes he merges with my daydreaming and the lines blur.

I had a past episode where I thought I was a system a few years back but that was unrelated to him (though he was an 'alter' in that) and totally ungrounded in anything LOL.

As far as labels go, I think we might be median?? Perhaps OSDD but unlikely. I got a 35.7 on the dissociative experiences scale denoting OSDD but I got 21 on the MIID (though that felt heavily geared towards aggressive and/or childlike alters imo). I promise I'm not looking for a yes or no or a diagnosis or anything! Just any general opinions/pointers/advice you've got. It's good to hear the opinions of outsiders sometimes. Don't feel pressured to say yes either, I won't feel invalidated if you're like "urmm no that's definitely something else" because it very possibly is! hey, so we (and anyone else, really) can’t confirm or deny whether or not you’re plural. in the end, it’s going to be something you have to figure out or decide for yourself(ves). no one knows you better than you know yourself, after all, especially not people online.

plurality is an at-will label that anyone at all can use if they feel like it fits for them. it’s a label you can put on and take off at your own discretion as it works for you. if you feel plural, you’re welcome to call yourself plural, and you belong in the community just as you are. if you ever realize and decide that you’re not actually plural in the future, no harm done. it’s okay to question, and it’s okay to be wrong. it’s all a part of learning and growing as a person.

it is totally possible for someone with maladaptive daydreaming to consider the beings from their daydreams as headmates. in fact, paragenic as a term refers to systems whose plurality originated from madd or some other form of immersive daydreaming.

switching is not a requirement for plurality. our partner system is plural, and they do not switch at all. having imaginary friends or talking to characters in your mind doesn’t always have to be a plural experience, but it definitely could be. it all depends on your comfort level and how you and your potential headmates choose to identify. you very well could be a median system, if you feel like that label works for you.

as far as osdd goes, we will say that complex dissociative disorders (like did and osdd) do often arise from a history of repeated childhood trauma. these disorders form by helping children dissociate or disconnect from overwhelming stress or painful situations as a method of survival. it is absolutely possible to be plural or a system without a complex dissociative disorder, but it is not possible to develop a cdd without a history of repeated trauma in childhood.

if you suspect that you may have osdd, we can’t stress enough the importance of seeking outside help, preferably from a understanding, trauma-informed therapist or counselor. while we do believe it is possible and sometimes necessary for individuals to self-diagnose, healing from the complex trauma that accompanies dissociative disorders like osdd may require some form of outside guidance and/or support.

OH NONNIE! That line in the third part of apocalyptic Alpha!Ari just made my heart good-ache when I wrote it! Because in their circumstances... it is two questions. Two important questions. If it was me straight up, it would be no to the first (in general) but YES to the second because with someone like this Ari who has such an incredible heart, is such a good protector, is smart and resourceful and it just feels like it would be right to be a parent with him in a few years? Yes.

Him drawing with the kids, telling them stories that are the plots from movies he used to watch (and you roll your eyes and laugh quietly when he has to make kid-friendly edits to stuff like The Godfather), teaching them to climb trees, help in the garden, take care of the cat and dog you've adopted...
