Finished Soul Gem holder with the first set of gems, which were very instructional. I ended up wet-sanding the gems, and on reflection, should have cleaned out the exposed tiny bubbles that had picked up resin dust (they're all a smattering of tiny white dots now) with a toothbrush before applying clear-coat. I applied clear-coat because there were some spots in the gems which clearly did not fully cure and I did not want any continuous oozing; I don't know if this will fix the issue but we'll see (they are solid enough).
Also, the clear-coat tells you that you can handle them after an hour, but next time I'm going to let it go for far longer (when flipping them over, the still not-totally-hard clear-coat would stick to the platform, which also had clear-coat on it, so it made little pools of opaque stuff that I had to sand off).
Other lesson learned, besides "do not reuse your sanding paper; just throw it away and move to a new sheet" (thank you Adam Savage): sanding sucks and you should move heaven and earth to make sure you have to do as little of it as possible.
With respect to bubbles: the Better Half insists it's possible to pour resin with no bubbles whatsoever (he's seen videos of "perfect pours", but cynical me suspects there's some off-screen shenanigans going on). But not only am I new at this, I'm also probably not making it easier by adding crushed mica sheets to the resin. I did pour #2 yesterday and am waiting to see if my technique improved (mixed much less color, mixed a much greater quantity of resin, mixed the parts together slowly for longer, overpoured the mold, etc). But I'm thinking that if I were doing this regularly, I might go the cheater's route and use technology (a vacuum chamber) because honestly, I don't think I have the time to perfect a no-bubble manual pour.
