Navigating Campus Life: Exploring Student Housing Options and Assignment Processes
One of the pivotal aspects of the university experience is finding a place to call home. As students embark on their academic journey, the question of housing becomes central to their overall well-being and sense of community. In this exploration, we delve into the diverse housing options available for students and demystify the housing assignment process.
1. On-Campus Residences: The Heart of University Living
a. Residence Halls:
On-campus residence halls are a cornerstone of the university experience. These buildings, often located at the heart of the campus, house students in individual rooms or shared suites. Living in residence halls provides unparalleled proximity to academic buildings, communal spaces, and a vibrant campus life.
b. Theme-Based Housing:
Many universities offer theme-based housing options within residence halls. Whether it’s an honors program, language immersion, or specific interest groups, theme-based housing allows students to live among peers who share similar academic or extracurricular pursuits.
2. Off-Campus Living: Independence Beyond Campus Boundaries
a. Apartments and Rentals:
For students seeking a taste of independence, off-campus living in apartments or rental housing is a popular choice. This option provides students with the opportunity to manage their own space, budget, and daily routines.
b. Homestays and Boarding Houses:
Some students opt for homestays or boarding houses, where they live with local families. This option not only offers a unique cultural experience but also provides a supportive environment for international students adjusting to a new country.
3. Housing Assignment Process: A Closer Look
a. Application and Preferences:
The housing assignment process typically begins with students submitting a housing application. During this process, students may express their preferences, such as room type, roommate preferences, and any specific living arrangements they desire.
b. Roommate Matching:
Universities often employ roommate matching systems to pair students with compatible roommates based on lifestyle preferences, study habits, and personal interests. This ensures a harmonious living environment for all residents.
c. Priority and Lottery Systems:
In cases where demand for specific housing options exceeds availability, universities may use priority or lottery systems. Priority is often given to certain groups, such as freshmen or honors students, while lottery systems randomly assign housing to those who meet specific criteria.
d. Room Assignments and Notifications:
Once the housing assignments are determined, students receive notifications detailing their room assignments, roommate information, and any additional instructions. This information allows students to prepare for their move-in day and connect with their future roommates.
Conclusion: Creating a Home Away from Home
The journey to find the right living space during the university years is as diverse as the students themselves. From the vibrant community life within on-campus residence halls to the independence of off-campus living, each housing option contributes to the rich tapestry of the student experience.
Understanding the intricacies of the housing assignment process is a crucial step for students preparing to embark on their academic journey. By exploring the various housing options available and participating in the assignment process, students not only find a physical space to reside but also cultivate a sense of belonging and community—a vital aspect of the transformative university experience.

Designing Wake Forest Residence Hall Flags
The popular question asked from freshman to freshman: “Where are you living?”
One’s loyalty to their freshmen residence hall is often stronger than it appears. We wanted to add another fun element to our beloved residence halls by designing a flag for each of them. We took inspiration from the existing freshman residence hall logos and the who the residence hall was named after. Here’s our designs for our freshman residence halls.
Angelou Residence Hall
Maya Angelou- poet, civil rights activist, and Wake Forest professor - served as inspiration for this residence hall. Inspired by the cover of her work, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, I meshed the vibrant colors with a classic “bend” flag design (as used on the flag of Tanzania, Namibia, Trinidad and Tobago), with the black bird centered in the middle.
Babcock Residence Hall
Taken from inspiration from its existing emblem, the calming green and blue encircle the insect as if it were on a lily pad. Babcock Residence Hall was named after Mary Reynolds Babcock, who donated over 300 acres of land to Wake Forest with her husband. The natural colors and bug represent Mrs. Babcock’s passion for gardening. The use of an animal on the flag can be compared to flags from Mexico, Kiribati, and Bolivia.
Bostwick Residence Hall
Jabez Bostwick, known as the father of the Wake Forest endowment, left $1.5 million to the school in his will in 1923. CEO of two major railroads in New England, Bostwick was drawn to Wake Forest College due to its Baptist affiliation. Sampling the purple and train symbol from the emblem, the sharp purple edges present the train as pushing forward with full steam ahead. The use of triangles is also reflected in flags like Saint Lucia and Antigua and Barbuda.
Collins Residence Hall
Born in 1961, William Avery Collins was a major University benefactor from Wake Forest. Using the same color scheme from the existing Collins logo, we created the flag using a chevron design. This chevron design scheme can be seen in flags like the Bahamas, Cuba, Czech Republic, and Philippines.
Johnson Residence Hall
Named after the University’s first Dean of women, Lois Johnson also received the Medallion of Merit in 1973. Inspired by the colors of the medallion, this flag also alludes to Johnson’s fight for gender equality on campus. During her time, she presided over the arrival of women on campus in the 1940s. A similar use of the cross is reflected in the flags of England and Denmark
Luter Residence Hall
As you may know, the Luter family has started and owned Smithfield Foods - the largest pork producer in the world! Joseph Williamson Luter III held the title of CEO for 31 years and helped the company grow to its worldwide status. Earning his bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1962, Joseph Luter’s time at Wake Forest is cemented by this residence hall. The wavy, warm hues on the flag represent crispy strips of bacon, as a nod to Smithfield’s pork. The fess element of this flag can be compared to the flags of Spain, Lebanon, and Cambodia.
South Residence Hall
Opened in 2010, South Residence Hall boasts a LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) style. Through its sustainable design, South Residence Hall reflects the importance of reducing consumption. The yellow silhouette of the lighthouse references the scenery of North Carolina cities, such as New Bern, where Samuel Wait spent much time helping develop Wake Forest University. The use of a singular star is also used in the national flags of Chile, Djibouti, and Myanmar.
Have a favorite design? Any opinions on a flag? Let us know in the comments!
All logo emblems were taken from https://southforest.wfu.edu/

Essentials to Pack for Residence Halls
If you’re a freshman who is about to be living in one of the residence halls, this blog is post is for you! Here is a list of some essential items you will definitely need for the dorm life. Below is a picture of my dorm room in A-I my first year!
Personal Toiletries (toothbrush, soap, shampoo, lotion, etc)
Don’t forget to pack everything you use to keep yourself clean and fresh. Bring a shower caddy to keep your stuff easily portable to bring from your room to the bathroom!
Pillows and Bed Linens
Remember to bring your pillows and bed linens for your extra-long twin bed. You are provided with a mattress and bed frame. I also recommend a memory foam mattress topper to make it more comfortable!
Towels
Don’t forget your towels for showering! I would bring two just in case.
Clothes and Hangers
If you’re going to be visiting home often, you won’t need to pack heavy. You can bring more clothes as the year goes by. However if you will be visiting only during breaks, pack smart. When starting fall quarter, it will be warm in Riverside and as November comes, things will get cooler.
Laundry Basket / Detergent
A laundry basket or bag of some sort is really important! For detergent, students tend to use things like Tide Pods for their convenience. You will be using Bear Bucks for laundry, which you load onto your R’Card.
Surge Protector / Power Strip
This is definitely an essential you will need when you’re plugging in your chargers, speakers, etc at your desk!
Computer & Electronics
It’s time for college! Don’t forget your laptop or computer. You will definitely need it, and it will just make your life easier instead of going to the computer lab. If you want to bring a small TV and a gaming console, go right ahead. I remember a couple of my hall-mates had really cool setups in their rooms.
Desk lamp
Although there is more than enough light in the residence hall rooms, a desk lamp is nice for studying and working at your desk. If it’s late at night and your roommate is sleeping, this is especially useful.
Favorite foods, snacks, and drinks!
It’s time for college! You may want to bring some ramen or cup noodles, granola bars, etc for late night snacks.
Microwave-safe Dishes
You are provided with a microwave and refrigerator in each dorm room, so you should bring some microwave-safe dishes to warm up your food. You will soon notice how great leftovers can be :-).
School Supplies
You’re in school after all. Remember to bring notebooks, paper, pencils, pens, highlighters, calculators, etc for your classes! If you forget anything, we have a campus store where you can buy school supplies.
That concludes my list of essentials to bring to the residence halls. If you have any more necessities that you need with you, bring them of course! Just remember, don’t over-pack. There’s a limited amount of space in the rooms and if you’re going to be visiting home often, you can always bring more stuff back.

Today I finally finished putting up my bulletin board for work, just in time for the deadline. I have to say, this is one of my favorite bulletin boards thus far, and I’ve done quite a few.
I turned my midterm essay test in for my African American literature class and did a lot of work on my research paper about why humans believe in monster legends, specifically the Loch Ness monster. Its super late and I still need to write more before I can let myself go to bed, but I’m currently listening to a podcast and having some snacks as a little break.
I can’t wait until I turn this draft in tomorrow afternoon and I can have a small breath of relief for a few days (as I work on the final draft). So many assignments are due.
Mental health isn’t doing so great today. The day felt like it kept getting worse and worse as it progressed, but I think I’m finally okay. I cried walking home from the library earlier because I had to leave the library because the silent floor was as loud as the group-work floor. It really has been a stressful day and I can’t wait to go to sleep in a little bit and put it all behind me.

The Perks Living in the SFC Residence Hall
There are many perks that come with living at the SFC Residence Hall.
1. Convenience
One of the best perks is the convenience of living just a five-minute walk away from St. Francis College.
2. Special Neighborhood Discounts
While all SFC students get to take advantage of #TerrierDeals (check out the SFC Mobile app to see the current list of offerings from places like Honeygrow and Gregory’s Coffee), there are many discounts offered by stores in the neighborhood just for residents in the Residence Hall. Special discounts are offered at places, such as restaurants, nail salons, laundromats and more. The SFC Mobile app lists all the current neighborhood discounts in the Live section of the app.
3. Lounges
During stressful times like mid-terms and final exam week, you can go downstairs and enjoy the beautiful lounges to study with your friends.
4. Events
There are many events held at the Residence Hall that are hosted by the RAs (Resident Advisors) for residents to enjoy as well as the events Student Activities and Student Government offer. Residence Hall events include cooking nights, karaoke, games, and much more. The film screening room allows students to watch movies on a big projector screen with a lot of space to invite friends. Follow @SFCHousing on Facebook and Twitter for event updates.
5. Brooklyn Heights
Along with the wonderful activities offered in the Residence Hall, there is a lot to do in the neighborhood as well. Brooklyn Heights is known for being one of the most popular tourist attractions. As you step out of the Residence Hall, on the Henry Street side, you have a clear view of the Manhattan Bridge. A two-minute walk down to the Promenade provides the entire Manhattan skyline.
The piers below the Promenade have a variety of spots to visit. There is ice cream like the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory, restaurants like Shake Shack, the NYC Ferry, and much more. There is also a soccer field where the SFC Men’s Soccer Team (and soon Women’s Soccer Team) plays and basketball courts.
You can take a short walk down from the piers to Brooklyn Bridge Park. Another great option is to go explore Manhattan. The 2 and 3 subway trains are in the Residence Hall building, and, if you prefer to walk, it only takes a few minutes to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.
Apply to live in the SFC Residence Hall: It’s not too late to apply to live in the Residence Hall for Fall 2018. For more information and to apply visit the SFC Housing website.
Shivani Sharma ‘21, a Nursing major, lives in the SFC Residence Hall.

1. What are the benefits between AI and Lothian??? Thanks!
Ahh my favorite question! Both AI and Lothian are co-ed style residence halls, the kind you would see in a college movie (long halls, communal restrooms, co-ed environment, etc).
A-I is the oldest residence hall and I would say it is the most social. I lived in A-I my freshman year, and to this day I still think it’s the best overall residence hall. I consider Lothian to be a more up-scaled version of A-I, and East Lothian is a beautiful residence hall to live in. However, West Lothian is similar to A-I and I find A-I to be the better one. The only reason why I didn’t choose to live in Lothian is because of the 50/50 chance you may get West or East Lothian.
The benefits of A-I include: cheapest residence hall, closest walk to campus and SRC, the dining hall, computer lab, and Scotty’s convenience store are inside the building, it’s a very social environment, and more.
The benefits of Lothian: newer and cleaner, nicer (depending on if you get in West or East Lothian), close to Glen Mor market, co-ed, and the bathrooms are way newer than A-I.
2. If you are waitlisted do you still have housing and orientation guarantees??
Housing might not be guaranteed but orientation would be guaranteed.
3. Hi, I completed my housing contract today, but I needed to fill out my parent/ guardian guarantee and I added my mother and her email and it’s been 4 hours and I’ve received nothing. Is this normal? or
I’m pretty sure this is normal. You will not receive your housing arrangements until summer from what I remember (when I was a freshman)!
4. Hello, I am a transfer student that got accepted to UCR. My concern at the moment is if financial aid will cover for most of my tuition?
Hi, well it all depends on how much your family makes and your financial situations. If your financial aid does not cover all of your tuition, you will be offered loans to cover your tuition that you can accept or reject. For more information, contact the financial aid office at: (951) 827-3878.
5. Hello! When will the waitlist acceptances be posted? Thank you!
The admissions department is not sure when ALL acceptances will be posted (as they are going out on a rolling basis), but you will receive notification via your MyUCR portal.
6. If we graduate spring quarter will we still be able to get into the SRC over summer?
Unfortunately, the SRC will only be available for students enrolled in summer classes during the summer unless you buy a membership. http://recreation.ucr.edu/student-recreation-center/membership.html
