so a bit of context for this blog- i'm very new to the owl house fandom, but i have a big old soft spot for highly speculative and tragic pairings like caleb and evelyn (signless/disciple is my actual factual otp; iykyk). however, my main concern is that for whatever reason, people really like doing massive purges of their creations after leaving a fandom these days

if you're lucky, these works will have been cross-posted or reblogged somewhere, and so they can still bring fans a lot of joy- but as often as not, they wind up lost to time

one of my biggest hopes in making this blog is to be something of an archive for this pairing: a place where even years from now, new fans and shippers can share in the hype and headcanons and character designs, and old fans can look back on fond memories or find fanart they've never seen before.

it's going to be tricky to find older posts now that tumblr doesn't let you search by timestamps anymore (damn the Top and Latest categories straight to hell), so if you think that i have missed a post, please let me know and i will get it queued up! i am always taking song recs that we can add to a community playlist here, and i'm also happy to share any fic recommendations- i just don't have time to read them all :')

so, i made an account at cohost - my url is the same as it is here: https://cohost.org/tsvai

not only can i not start posting there yet (there's some kind of waiting period apparently), i also don't really intend to actually use it unless (or until) it becomes uninhabitable here for one reason or another. (update: i can post there now, but i still do not really intend to at this time unless i have to move there).

due to how uncertain things have seemed here for a while now, i've taken a lot of steps in the past year or so to back certain things up (ref sideblog, oc sideblog), but i hadn't really taken any actual steps toward future post-tumblr plans, especially since, as i've said before, i'm not really confident that i'll continue to use social media after tumblr.

i did also say however that i would at least try cohost, since its format is more like tumblr compared to a lot of other twitter-like alternatives, so i decided to at least reserve my url and post it so that my followers & mutuals can find me there if they want to, just in case.

it's disheartening that i can't customize my 'site' there the way i can here, but i also intend to look into screwing around with neocities, so that i can make pages there at least (and maybe transfer my oc profile backups lmao).

tl;dr: at this time, i'm not leaving tumblr - but i'm starting to take steps to at least have something to try out if my hand is forced by site shutdown, or general uninhabitability (i heard another unsettling rumor today, but i'm not spreading it unless/until it becomes more than just hearsay lmao). (update: other than tumblr's changes to add a certain opt-out setting and their announcement about it, nothing tumblr has said officially confirms the 'rumor' i previously mentioned, but at this point third parties analyzing internal data seem to have pretty much confirmed the selling-our-data rumor).

I think there’s at least one timeline out there, where they get to do something like this before the war, and like–

end of the night, they’re coming home – just the two of them, just on the right side of tipsy, you know, warmth in their chests and a sweet buzz under their skin, and while Steve’s fishing for their keys in his pocket, Bucky meets his eyes for a moment and damn but he’s been a fool to go looking for stars up in the sky when they’ve been shining so bright right here in front of him.

So key turns in the hole, door swings open for them, and maybe tonight even their apartment is feeling good – maybe their old radio chooses to crackle back to life for a change, and they pull their curtains closed, they only leave the one lamp on, pick their little corner away from the window just in case.

And they’re supposed to be dancing, see, just a little box step like Becca taught them for laughs the last time the Barnes’ had Steve over for the holidays, but then. But then their eyes meet. And their noses, so softly – and their lips, and that’s so much softer somehow – and Bucky’s hand’s travelling up Steve’s spine, and Steve’s sliding his fingers in Bucky’s hair, and they were meant to be dancing, but they just end up making out for twenty-seven minutes straight instead.

alright, there’s definitely a universe out there, in the always blessed post-CATWS timeline where CACW never happened, and just-- please consider:

Steve’s been planning tonight for so long, ‘cause he wants it to be special, wants Bucky to have a Valentine’s Day just like the stuff you see in the movies; and since he can afford it these days, he has precisely 1107 red roses (one for each day they have been together in the new century) delivered to their apartment, with a hand-scribbled note that reads, Hope to send you a million more.

He’s made a reservation at Bucky’s favorite place, and when Bucky steps out of their bedroom that night, with a fresh shave and his hair carefully pulled back, in tight-fitting black pants and that deep burgundy button down that hugs his shoulders just right and brings out the natural red of his lips, Steve nearly falls to his knees in religious worship.

He fits both hands around Bucky’s slim waist, heart drumming out a crazy beat in his chest, just where Bucky’s hands choose to rest awhile.

“You look like a million dollars, honey.”

Bucky smiles that one secret smile of his, the one that so rarely appears outside the safe walls of their home. His metal hand slides up to stroke at the nape of Steve’s neck, slipping tender fingers under the collar of Steve’s shirt to brush, kiss-soft, against his bare skin – and his touch is thrill and gooseflesh spreading down Steve’s spine.

His voice rumbles deep and warm, just a whisper away from Steve’s lips. “You clean up nicely too, doll.”

And I mean, maybe they make it out the door, or maybe they don’t.

three.

But like have you considered the possibility of Valentine’s in Wakanda, because I mean–

catch these boys living it up in their blissful little bubble like they’re on their own special kind of honeymoon, okay, making total goo goo eyes at each other all the time, and there has to be, there HAS to be a little moment somewhere in there, okay, like

it’s February 14th and- and I don’t think they’ve even checked the calendar in like a week, because who needs to know what day it is when they’ve been savoring their time together like this? Content to explore life on their little farm, going from one meal to work, to the next meal, to more work, and so on and so forth, and measuring their day in how many kisses they managed to sneak in between?

Come sunset, they find each other in the kitchen, and Bucky pulls Steve in by his beltloops and captures his lips all sweet-like, like a greeting and like a promise all at once, and Steve tells himself it’s well worth sweating all day long and chasing after stray goats and getting his work clothes all nice and ripe, if at the end of it all he gets to be kissed hello like this.

Bucky chuckles against his mouth, and Steve tastes the sweat off his whiskers, and the faint sweetness of the dried apricots he knows Bucky keeps on him these days.

“You smell like goat,” Bucky pulls away just enough to say to him, his whole face scrunched up with laughter, his eyes screwed shut, all happy crinkles and them mile-long eyelashes and if god has any mercy at all he won’t let Steve’s heart stop dead in his chest the way it feels like it’s going to do, nope, ‘cause Steve’s got so much more of this to bask in yet, so much more of it, so much more.

“You smell like goat shit,” he tells Bucky, and there’s a story somewhere in here left in the trail of clothes they strew across the floor, and a plot twist for sure where they knock over a lamp and a book and almost trip over Steve’s old boots, but the epilogue sees Steve hoisting Bucky up in his arms and stumbling into the shower with him, same way he keeps doing a little too often lately, and nowhere near often enough.

What they start in the shower, of course, they can finish in the bedroom; and if Bucky moves slow and languorous on top of him, and teaches their hips the old rock ‘n’ roll once more, just to make sure they both remember it still, well Steve has always loved to learn.

four.

Now I was thinking– how about a little bit of a romantic getaway? Maybe a long weekend out of town, perhaps in the mountains, to make the best of what’s left of winter. They spend the whole day going for walks around the local village, sipping on a cup of hot cocoa, playing in the snow just like they used to when they were kids, building a sadly short-lived snow dick together, sledding, until they’re tired all the way down to their bones.

That’s when they go back to their private chalet, proceed to slip out of their damp clothes and climb together in a nice hot bubblebath, where Steve sits himself between Bucky’s legs and lays back against Bucky’s chest, and they alternate between trading slow, lazy kisses and feeding each other the fancy chocolates they brought back with them, until the water’s gone lukewarm.

and I could honestly keep going, but it's getting late and I need to get up early tomorrow, so for now, happy valentine's day to both you and our favourite boys!!

hi! if youve stumbled on this blog, you probably found it through trails from my old fandom days on here. most likely, steven universe, and homestuck is a possibility too. before this url, i was to ‘thegayfuchsia,’ which after deactivating, i also reserved the url for archiving purposes.

i was the author of “Shattered Reflections,” one of the most popular lapidot fanfictions on archiveofourown during the height of the steven universe fandom, around 2015? the shell of that work has been on ao3 all these years but i took the contents down because i was embarrassed, though ive had a backup copy saved on google drive that ive been more than happy to share.

however, someone recently reported that work and it is at risk of being deleted. i have reinstated the contents of the fic but i screenshotted all the comments and stats just in case i lose it :’)

A Guide to Signing Up for Tmblrvision 2023

In THREE DAYS, on Saturday, 15 July 2023, 9pm CEST, you will be able to sign up for the 2023 Tmblrvision Song Contest. In order to be able to prepare yourselves for that day, here’s a little guide so your experience goes smoothly this Saturday.

1. Read the Rules

Before you even think about signing up, make sure to read the official rules of the 2023 contest. Don’t go into sign-ups blind! You might think you have the perfect song for the perfect country, but alas, it might not even be eligible. And make sure you know what you’re getting into as a Head of Delegation. Also, this gives you the opportunity to ask questions to clarify certain things before signing up, so you don’t end up taking someone else’s spot (and country) only to drop out over a misunderstanding.

Here’s a TL;DR of some of the most important, basic rules:

Songs must have been released no earlier than July 2021 (with some exceptions mentioned in the rules)

Eurovision songs, Junior Eurovision songs, and National Final songs are not allowed

Covers of popular songs are not allowed

This year’s Eurovision artists are not allowed (with some exceptions mentioned in the rules)

Last year's Tmblrvision artists are not allowed (also with some exceptions); you can check who those artists are in the Tmblrvision wiki

2. Ireland Has Been Claimed

Last year's winning Head of Delegation has chosen Ireland as their Winner's Pick, meaning nobody else can claim it on Saturday.

3. Decide: Tumblr or Discord? And Check Your Username!

On the sign-up form, you will be asked to choose between Tumblr or Discord as the primary platform you will use. This will determine how you will be contacted regarding your participating in the contest, as well as how your song and vote submissions will be verified.

Once you’ve selected which platform you want to use, you will be asked to provide your username. Make sure it matches the platform you’ve actually given in the previous question! Your Tumblr username would be the same as the URL you use. Meanwhile, Discord has moved to a username system, so just use that one. Note that this is NOT referring to the nickname you use in the Tmblrvision server (or any other server)!

Keep in mind: If you do not provide a valid username corresponding to the platform you chose, I reserve the right to disregard or throw out your submission!

It’s also important to make sure that you can be contacted by DM regardless of which platform you choose, because that’s how I will confirm your participation in the contest. My Tumblr username is @renlerntdeutsch and my Discord username is eurenvision.

4. Lock In Your Five Choices

You will be required to choose FIVE different countries during sign-ups. This is in case your main choices have already been claimed by someone else. For example, if your first choice has been claimed, you will get your second choice. If both choices have been claimed, then you will get your third choice, and so on until you (hopefully) have a country by the fifth choice. Do not list countries that you know you won’t be interested in at all! You will just be potentially taking that country from someone who might actually have a song or even a national final prepared for it. Remember, unless it’s a one-to-one swap, you won’t be able to replace the country you got… but you’d have known that already if you read the rules.

A few things to keep in mind:

If you want to represent Canada, Chile, or New Zealand, you will have to select Special Guest Country

If you’d like to select an artist from Belarus, then you will have to select Independent Belarusian Artists

If you’d like to select an artist from Russia, then you will have to select Independent Russian Artists

On the form, Czech Republic is listed as Czechia, Türkiye is listed as Turkey, and the Netherlands is simply listed as Netherlands

As mentioned above, you will not be able to select an artist from Ireland

The lists are alphabetized, so it should be easy to find which countries you’re searching for. You can also type in the first few letters, if that makes it easier for you.

5. Decide If You Want To Participate At All If All Your Five Choices Are Already Taken

Unfortunately, it is possible that all five of your choices will no longer be available as they have been claimed by others who submitted their form ahead of you. You have to let me know if you would like to be contacted via the platform you selected if you’d still like to participate. If you pick Yes, then you will receive a message asking which country you’d like to claim. If you pick No, then I will assume that you are no longer interested in participating and will not be contacted further.

6. On Saturday: Check Tumblr (or tmblrvision.com) and NOT Discord!

While we do have a Discord server for the contest, the link to the sign-up form will first go up (via a scheduled post) on Tumblr (or tmblrvision.com), NOT on Discord. That said, Tumblr isn’t always great at posting scheduled posts at the right time, so the sign-up link may go up a little later than 2100 CEST, but regardless, it will be up on Tumblr before it is posted on Discord.

7. Read the Information Text NOW, Not on Saturday

There will be some text at the top of the sign-up sheet; I have posted that text here. You don’t really need to read it at all, so I’m saving you some time by letting you read it now. (I don’t even know why it’s there. Maybe in case someone accidentally opens that link without knowing what it is.)

Note that the form may show you which e-mail account you are currently logged into, if you use Gmail or the Google suite of apps. Don’t worry, this will NOT be saved and I will NOT be able to see it!

8. Country Confirmations WILL Be Delayed

Note that country confirmations will NOT go out quickly this year. Don't expect a message within an hour or so of signing up. In fact, expect a delay of at least three or four hours, though twelve hours is more realistic. Hope y'all understand!

During my semi hiatus:

⛧ I've almost finished totk. I'm on the lightning temple right now (the order I went was fire, water, wind, and now this one) and am procrastinating by farming to upgrade my armors. I dunno, that temple just feels so claustrophobic so I'm having a difficult time doing it but this isn't a complaint, good atmosphere, feels like I'm suffocating in a tomb, 10/10

⛧ I started reading The Poppy War, after a long reading dry spell (I've been reading nonfiction stuff but haven't read a novel since maybe March). Feels nice to be reading again but I'm having to retrain my attention span to focus for longer than ten minutes at a time.

⛧ I've been drawing, a lot. I haven't been posting any art to my art blog, and have actually reserved a url for a Secret art blog in case my art changes so drastically that I just want a hard brand reset. I don't know when I'll post art again. Feel like I'm experiencing an art growth spurt and I just want to see if it actually leads to anything, so I'm drawing a bunch of self indulgent bullshit that I don't want to share publicly.

⛧ I made an appointment with a new therapist. Haven't been in therapy since mid-2020, and I want to start fresh with someone new because my last therapist really didn't do much for me. My first meeting with her is in about a week and I'm both anxious and excited about it.

⛧ I started smoking weed semi-regularly again. It started giving me major panic attacks sometime around 2015 and I stopped smoking it after I went to the ER thinking I was having a heart attack (I was not). Lately I smoke it at night before bed and it helps me get to sleep before 3 AM, and actually get a restful sleep most of the time.

⛧ I restarted a cross stitch project I began a year ago, arrogantly believing it would be simple enough for a beginner to tackle in time to give my mother as a birthday gift. Turns out it's the most complex pattern I've stitched to date. But it's going better this time, thanks to the parking method. I should have it done in time this year, and I'm trying not to judge 2022 me for their hubris after having only completed two small projects before trying to tackle this one the first time around.

hi! if youve stumbled on this blog, you probably found it through trails from my old fandom days on here. most likely, steven universe, but homestuck is a possibility too. after this url, i changed to ‘iamlapis,’ which after deactivating, i also reserved the url for archiving purposes. 

i was the author of “Shattered Reflections,” one of the most popular lapidot fanfictions on archiveofourown during the height of the steven universe fandom, around 2015? the shell of that work has been on ao3 all these years but i took the contents down because i was embarrassed, though ive had a backup copy saved on google drive that ive been more than happy to share. 

however, someone recently reported that work and it is at risk of being deleted. i have reinstated the contents of the fic but i screenshotted all the comments and stats just in case i lose it :’) 

anyway, im probably talking out into the void but if you happen to stumble across this post, and you recognize the username or the title of this fanfic, just know that my intent to reach you has been recognized. i hope youre all well!

Some thoughts on bad programming practices

I recently read an article about the worst kind of programer. I agree with the basic idea, but want to add my own thoughts about it.

I have seen over time that developers seem really invested in learning new things for the sake of new things, rather than getting better at existing approaches. Programming is like everything else - new is not always better.

I have a Honda CRV that is not as easy to use as some cars I used to own before touch interfaces became popular. The touch screen sometimes acts like I'm pressing various places on the screen when I'm not, making beeping noises and flipping screens randomly. I have to stop and turn the car off and on to stop it. It has a config screen with every option disabled. It has bizarre logic about locking and unlocking the doors, that I have never fully figured out. I often wonder if devs who make car software actually have a drivers license.

If I tried asking 100 programmers the following question, chances are very few of them, if any, could answer it without a web search: Bob just completed programming school, and heard about MVC, but is unsure how to tell which code should be model, which code should be view, and which code should be controller. How would you explain the MVC division of code to Bob?

It's not a genius question, it's really very basic stuff. Here are some other good questions about other very basic stuff:

Why did developers decide in REST that POST is create and PUT is update?

The HTTP RFCs have always stated that PUT is create or update to a resource on the server such that a GET on that resource returns what was PUT, and that POST is basically a grab bag of whatever does not fit into other verbs. The RFCs used to say that a POST url is indicative of an operation, now they just say POST is whatever you say it is.

Developers often talk about the REST usage of POST and PUT like Jesus Christ himself dictated this usage, like there is no argument about it. I have never seen any legit reason why PUT cannot be create or update like the RFC says, and POST can be for non-CRUD stuff. Any real, complex system that is driven by customer demand for features is highly likely to have some operations that are not CRUD - integrations with other systems, calculations, searches (eg, a filter box that shows matches as you type, find results for a search based on input fields), and so on.

By reserving POST for these kinds of other operations, you can immediately identify anything that isn't CRUD. Otherwise, you wind up with two usages of POST - mostly for create, but here and there for other stuff.

2. Why do Java developers insist on Spring and JPA for absolutely every Java project without question?

Arguably, a microservice project should be, well, you know, micro. Micro is defined as an adjective that means extremely small. When Spring and JPA take up over 200MB of memory, and takes 10 seconds to fire up a near empty project that barely writes one row to a table, I'm not seeing the micro here.

Call me crazy, but maybe micro should be applied to the whole approach, not just the line count: the amount of memory, the amount of hand written code, the amount of time a new hire takes to understand how the code works, etc. You don't have to be a freak about it, trying 10 languages to see which uses the least amount of RAM, just be reasonable about it.

In this case, Spring and JPA were designed for monolithic development, where you might have problems like the following:

A constructor is referred to 100 times in the code. Adding a new field requires modifying all 100 constructor calls to provide the new field, but only one of those calls actually uses the new field. So dependency injection is useful.

There are thousands of tables, with tens of thousands of queries, that need to be supported in multiple databases (eg, Oracle and MSSQL), with uses cases like multi-tenancy and/or sharding. There comes a point where it is just too much to do some other way, and JPA is very helpful.

3. Why does every web app require heavy amounts of JS code?

When I started in this business, we used JSP (Java Server Pages), which is a type of SSR (Server Side Rendering). Basically, an HTML templating system that can fill in the slots with values that usually come from a database. It means when users click on a button, the whole page reloads, which these days is fast enough for it to be a brief sort of blink.

The bank I have used since about 2009 still uses some sort of SSR. As a customer, I don't care it's a bit blinky. It responds in about a second after each click, and I'm only going to do maybe 12 page loads in a session before logging out. I can't find any complaint on the web about it.

I saw a project "upgrade" from JSP to Angular. They had a lot of uncommented JSP code that nobody really knew how it worked, which became Angular code nobody really knew how it worked. Some people would add new business logic to Angular, some would add it to Java code, and nobody leading the project thought it was a good idea to make a decision about this.

Nobody ever explained why this upgrade was of any benefit, or what it would do. The new features being added afterwards were no more or less complex than what was there before, so continuing to use JSP would not have posed any problems. It appeared to be an upgrade for the sake of an upgrade.

4. Why is everything new automatically so much better than older approaches?

What is wrong with the tools used 10 or 15 years ago? After all, everything else works with this way. Sure, we have cars with touch screens now, but they still use gas, tires, cloth or leather seats, a glove box, a steering wheel, glass, etc. The parts you touch daily to drive are basically the same as decades ago, with a few exceptions like the touch screen and electric engines.

Why can't we just use a simple way of mapping SQL tables to objects, like a code generator? Why can't we still use HTML templating systems for line of business apps that are mostly CRUD? Why can't we use approaches that are only as complex as actually required for the system at hand? I haven't seen any real improvements in newer languages or tooling that are significantly better in real world usage, with a few exceptions like using containers.

5. Do you think other industries work this way?

I can tell you right now if engineers built stuff like programmers do, I would never get in a car, walk under a bridge, or board an airplane. If doctors worked that way, I'd be mortally afraid every visit. So why do we do things this way? Is this really the best we can do?

I worked with a guy who asked shortly after being hired "why the f to we have a mono repo?". When I asked what is wrong with a monorepo, he was unable to give any answer, but convinced management how this has to change pronto, apparently convinced with almightly passion all microservice projects must be structured as separate repos per service. Not sure if it was him or someone else, but somehow it was determined that each project must be deployed in its own container. These decisions were detrimental to the project in the following ways:

One project was a definition of all objects to be sent over the wire. If service A object is updated to require a new field, there is no compile error anywhere to show the need to update constructor calls. If service B calls A to create objects, and nobody thinks of this, then probably only service A is updated to provide the new required field, and a subtle hard to find bug exists, that might take awhile for anyone to even notice.

Your average corporate dev box can handle maybe 15 containers before flopping over and gasping for air. So we quickly lost local development in one of those unrecoverable ways where the team would never get it back.

Every new dev would have to checkout dozens of repos.

No dependency information between repos was tracked anywhere, making it unknowable which subset of services have to be run to stand up service X to work on that one service. Combined with the inability to run all repos locally yields two equally sucktastic solutions to working on service X:

Use trial and error to figure out which subset stands up X and run it locally

Deploy every code change to a dev server

When Alex talks about programmers using hugely complex solutions of the sort he describes, it sounds to me like devs who basically jerk off to everything new and cool. This is very common in this business, every team has people like that in it. That isn't necessarily a big problem by itself, but when combined with the inability/unwillingness to ensure other devs are fully capable of maintaining the system, and possibly the arrogance of "everything I say is clearly best", and/or "only I can maintain this system", that's the killer combination that does far more harm than good.
