Rewatching DS9 again and I am just so interested at how an average Bajoran would view Kira by the end of the series. How an average Cardassian would? We know that a lot of what she does is known to the Bajoran people. Shakaar mentions Furel and Lupaza bragging about her whenever they get news of the station. But lets actually take a look at this:

She is the highest ranking Bajoran on DS9 outranked only by the Emissary

Most times Sisko did anything in the capacity as the Emissary, Kira was one step behind and to the right

She was with Kai Opaka, the most widely loved and respected Bajoran, when she made her journey through the Celestial Temple and “answered the call of the prophets”

She was highly respected (and loved) by Vedek Bareil who was hugely popular on Bajor (he could very well have been Kai if he hadn’t taken the blame for Kai Opaka’s actions during the Occupation)

She and Kai Winn had a well known feud and after Kai Winn’s fall from grace at the end of the show, Kira must come out pretty great to everyone else

She is the one who found and saved the great Bajoran hero, Li Nalas, from a Cardassian work camp and then within a week saved Bajor from a civil war that had been encouraged by Cardassians.

Between her saving Li Nalas and his fellow prisoners AND finding the Ravinok and saving the Bajorans (and Cardassians and Ziyal) from the Breen mines, was she the person Bajorans turned to when searching for their lost love ones? Was she a symbol to those who kept looking for their loved ones because Kira Nerys found those thought to be lost?

She prevented ANOTHER Bajoran Civil War and helped elect Shakaar as the First Minister of Bajor. Again being associated with a widely loved and respected member of Bajoran society.

Kira was in charge of DS9 during Dominion Occupation and started up the station’s resistance cell

She was permitted to use the Orb of Time, one of Bajor’s most sacred objects

She was the chosen by a Prophet to be their vessel during the Reckoning with the Pah-Wraith...and the KAI was on the same station. But it was KIRA who was chosen

She plays chicken with a Romulan fleet...and wins!

She was a key figure in the Dominion War. She started as a resistance fighter who was assigned to a falling apart, unimportant old Cardassain station and becomes the Colonel of the single most important port in the Alpha Quadrant. She is the right hand of the Emissary. She is widely respected by many beloved figures in Bajoran society.

And this list is just the most public things that have happened to her. This doesn’t even take into account any of the stories about her that involve her dealing with whatever BS the Star Trek universe decides to throw at the characters that week. Klingons beam in and fight? Gets stabbed and keeps fighting. Emissary is transported to 2024? Kira is on the team that pulls him out.

By the end of season seven, do politicians on Bajor hold their breath or breathe a sigh of relief if Kira gets involved? Do Vedeks seek her out to ask her about being possessed by a prophet? About her experiences with the Orbs? About Kai Opaka’s last words? Do families still grieving those missing from the Occupation petition her to look for the lost?

And how about the Cardassians?

The Cardassian government would probably never publicly admit to any time she foiled their plans, but Tekeny Ghemor tells her that she has her own section in the Cardassian Central Archives and is a public figure on Cardassia

Would the Cardassians in the Breen mine whisper their thanks among their family that Kira Nerys found them?

Tekeny Ghemor, someone who was respected enough to be considered as the face for the Cardassian resistance against the Dominion controlled Cardassian puppet government, publicly considered her his daughter/family by asking her to participate in the Shri-tal ritual and give her all of his secrets prior to his death (something highly valued in Cardassian society)

She was a part of Damar’s resistance. She helped them fight the Dominion and was with Damar when he died for Cardassia. In the story of how Damar was martyred for Cardassia’s freedom from the Dominion, Kira Nerys, a Bajoran, is heavily featured.

In all Bajoran/Cardassian relations, do Cardassians seek to involve Kira as a woman of her word who will treat in good faith or do they cross their fingers and hope she is nowhere near their business?

Can you tell I think about Kira Nerys a lot?

I think I like the idea of Murtagh and Thorn handling side quest type things for a while once they make it out to Mt Angor. As annoyed as Murtagh is that his already abbreviated training keeps getting interrupted, Thorn's the only mature dragon who isn't tied down to one location.

The first time, they're sent up to the north of the spine, near Carvahall. The longer they're up there, the more Murtagh suspects that the villagers did not need the help of a dragon rider to get rid of a particularly vicious cave bear, but he's already here and it's nice to feel useful and wanted and once he gets over himself, he gets to meet Roran. Reuniting with his brother wasn't nearly as horrible as he thought it would be. Adding a cousin to the mix shouldn't be that bad. Once the initial awkwardness is past, they get along like a house on fire. Even so, he tries to leave quietly once the bear's been tracked and dispatched.

Roran's having none of it. He and Thorn are family, even if he is a prickly grouch. They're at least staying for dinner. Thorn will not let him say no. Ismira is delighted by her uncle and his dragon friend. Dinner turns into a few extra days of helping around Carvahall and spending time with his family. By the time he actually leaves, he, Thorn, Katrina, and Roran are plotting to kidnap Eragon and bring him out here for Ismira's birthday.

Then they spend a few weeks in Illeria, trying to help Nasuada negotiate with the mages because the system, as it's currently set up, is a powder keg. They're happy to see Alin settling in nicely and that she's genuinely enjoying the outside world. Murtagh gets to be a fancy boy who knows politics at galas. He's having the time of his life dragging an ambassador for being a bad dancer. The four of them get involved in so many spy thriller shenanigans because Murtagh cannot go five minutes without kicking some kind of hornets nest.

They go north and fight a sea serpent alongside Uvek. Murtagh can only watch with horror while Thorn plunges into the icy abyss to stop it from dragging their boat under. Then lines on their harpoons go slack and come up cut. He's about to dive in after him when Thorn's head breaches the waves.

"She will not trouble your tribes anymore," Thorn says, dragging himself, panting, onto the pack ice, and adds softly, "I could not bear to destroy something with such a beautiful song."

They find more leads on the Draumar, only now they have enough experience to follow them safely.

Of course, half the time they either create or stumble into far more problems than they wanted. Murtagh can escalate taking care of some small time bandits into a narrowly averted major diplomatic incident between the Broddring Empire and Surda in under three minutes. At one point, they go to take care of some minor smuggling and somehow, wind up leading a heist in Ellesmera and both refuse to elaborate on how those two things are connected.

Eragon looses count of the number of times they come back far later than anticipated, and when questioned about it, Murtagh's first answer is just, "Fucking Durza!"

Thorn continues his side quest to get Murtagh laid, only now he's armed with the knowledge of romantic ballads. His arranged meet-cutes with any of the men or women he deems acceptable are met with a resounding lack of success.

Thorn builds his confidence up with bandits and wild animals and more of the little surprises Durza left around the continent. He learns drinking songs and ballads in taverns and from harvest festivals and on the road and eventually starts to share his own work. He watches people change from approaching him with fear, to caution, to acceptance, and eventually to joy.

And slowly, but surely the people of Alagaësia stop feeling dread at the sight of the red dragon and his rider and instead, feel safe.

in retrospect, it’s a bit more tragic that it’s from imahara joe that we first hear of percy being known first and foremost as ‘the terrible tinkerer of tal’dorei.’ certainly not surprising, considering the presence of firearms and extrapolations thereof wreaking havoc in bassuras amongst crawler gangs, and anyone inquisitive enough able to track their source

but also thinking back on the 4-sided dive following the hells’ trip to whitestone and taliesin’s brief comments on percy becoming darker and more paranoid as his attempts to curtail the spread of both residuum and his inventions fall short. how that might’ve begun to manifest and spread, insidious, into the creative occupations of arts and sciences he embraced after vecna’s fall, and the annual engineering & tinkering festival that began in its wake to celebrate feats of ingenuity in a time of peace (and bears). whether or not imahara ever attended or was aware, he definitely would’ve been the exact sort of person meant to benefit and collaborate in the event—but the fact that it’s from him we get allusions to the wariness and fear that hangs over percy’s name, it doesn’t spell out optimistically for the turn he made to better pursuits that began with whitestone’s clock tower at the end of campaign 1

These were meant to be colored but alas. Faulty art supplies. Still like these sketches though! They’re lifted from the OG comic book. The idea was to only use direct poses and scenes from the source material and try to infuse some more productive character design into them.

Focus on status of a given character (and changes in it) and some stronger air of historical reference, kept as far away from my own personal head canons of the characters and their backstories as possible.

they haven't seen keith in several months. since shiro disappeared, actually, with the exception of pidge.

it starts with him hanging out with them less and less. pidge still sees him when he sleeps over at her house, an type of understanding in their mutual loss, but for the rest, they only see him once in a while.

then he starts ditching school. it's still reasonable - none of them know where shiro is, and losing his brother must be painful. sure, they want to help him, but disappearing randomly isn't exactly out of character.

when shiro comes back, it's a relief in more ways than one. they can't tell keith what actually happened, but at least his brother has returned. they'd been worried they were losing both siblings and not just one.

and yet he still doesn't reappear. hunk asks a teacher, and he hasn't been to school at all in weeks. colleen hasn't seen him, and shiro just goes quiet, solemn, whenever anyone brings him up, clearly worried for his brother.

and unlike shiro, where they at least knew who'd taken him, nobody knows what happened to keith.

I honestly can't remember if I said anything here about Couple's Goodluck Charm lqg?

When he's a disciple he gets a crush on, like, two of his shixiongs who are pining over each other and ends up having a fling with both of them before they start dating each other. They end up in a committed relationship and lowkey cite dating lqg as their inciting incident.

Later he ends up dating an established couple known from breaking up and getting back together and after they dated him they end up stabilizing and getting married.

They say lqg was their good luck charm and he gets kind of a reputation.

Now anyone who wants good luck in their relationship try to catch lqg's eye bc him being interested in you is seen as a blessing!

When he starts hanging around yqy everyone thinks the Era of good luck Liu Qingge will end bc obviously yqy is a catch and they'll actually end up together but then yqy brings home sj. Everyone can tell yqy is obsessed with sj, so now everyone thinks lqg's good luck extends to finding your soulmate in general even if you aren't currently in a relationship. AND then sj and lqg become RIVALS and the yqy & sj ships crashes and burns so lqg's reputation evolves once more

So it goes: if lqg is interested in you as a couple then you're guaranteed good fortune in your relationship. If you're single then you will have terrible luck.

People are already intimidated by him bc he's gaining such a bold reputation as Bai zhan's succeeding disciple, and now with the Relationship Lore people never approach him interested in Him

He cements a few more relationships throughout his time as a disciple and Peak Lord (probably a few more disciples, Mqf & WQW, maybe, when they become peak lords) and ruins a few others incidentally so his reputation grows into like a folk tale that everyone passes on to each other

So of course lqg's crush is seen as very Ominous and Foreboding for sqq and when lbh pops up everyone is like. Whoop. Lqg Curse strikes again.

Funnily enough, when bingqiu happens and friendly interaction with demons become more common, when lqg's Lore is shared the demons flip the omens. Lqg fighting lbh for five years read as being interested and now lbh is off living his happiest life. Lqg tried removing sqh's head from his shoulders and now mbj has a devoted life partner. Obviously Liu qingge fighting you/being interested in you in the demon way is a blessing of good fortune

Anyways, when lbh hears that dating lqg as a third means your relationship will last forever, OF COURSE he tries to get that extra bit of assurance :>

(I think... moshang also want a piece of lqg's relationship luck. It becomes bingqiu and moshang competing over Liu Qingge)

please tell me: what is your favourite medieval history myth to mythbust? I want to know more!

I am on a lifelong crusade to free young people of the belief that "Forty was elderly in the Middle Ages," and its accompanying myth, "Most Medievals married between ages 12-14 because they knew they'd probably die young!"

It is mathematically true that thirty-five was more or less the average life span in most parts of western Europe for much of the Medieval era. It is also true that life spans averaged shorter than in a modern first world country's population.

However, this doesn't mean most people died around that age. It's the average, because most people died either in infancy/early childhood or in old age. If you made it past early childhood, you had a decent likelihood of living into your sixties or seventies. Yes, there was greater risk of death from untreatable sickness or childbirth or misadventure, but forty was certainly not seen as old, and most people hoped to live to seventy.

As for young marriages, yes, they happened, but mainly among the aristocracy who needed to make family alliances/gain political advantage/move money around. In those cases, the young people usually remained living with their parents/relatives until they were ready to be parents themselves, at which point they would join their spouse. And remember, puberty usually occurred a couple of years later in those times, because without the rich nutrition we have today, the body does not mature as quickly. Scholarly findings indicate that many girls only experienced menarche around the age of fourteen, fifteen, or sixteen.

And if you were poor? Generally speaking, no need to marry kids off young, because there are no political alliances etc. to make! In the late Middle Ages, church and legal records show that most commoners married in their late teens or early twenties, at which point they'd be in a better position to support a family, have children, etc.

In any case, it had nothing to do with dying at forty and wanting to get in as many years of married life before then as possible. Biological clock might well be on their radar, but probably not worries about dying young.

Every time a much admired celeb does/is accused of doing something shitty I want to scream that IT’S NOT ABOUT THEIR WORK! IT’S NEVER ABOUT THEIR WORK and whether you thought it was bad or problematic or over-hyped or over-exposed! It’s not about whether you were sick of them, or wanted them punished for a perceived decline in quality! We don’t need to know that you “never liked them (as a celeb/artist/whatever)” or found them annoying.

It’s not even about whether you found their personal life “cringe” or “boring”, or “suspect”, their public presence facile. It’s not about ANY OF THAT.

You are not the main character! Your aesthetic choices do not confer virtue! Equating them with actual harm done to real human beings is EXCEPTIONALLY SHITTY and conveys the exact opposite of the effect you’re attempting to capture!
