ON THE SLASH J. OKAY.)#but honestly though i did expect Gem to hold a grudge over the 2v1 in SL. and. its good that there are consequences???#it IS a ‘betrayal’ in Gem’s eyes. they were friends. they were murder besties for the last two sessions and then Pearl chose Scar over her#and its awesome man. [through gritted teeth] this is awesome man this will be good for character development ok ok ok. ok?#its also got something to do with Pearl having the red creep in. i think#because during SL Gem was like. nearly idolising the Scarlet Pearl persona while vaguely aware that her own reputation has a similar effect#and yknow. the horrors. the fact that their image is so heavily built on what others deem them to be and they can only play into it#but by the end of SL Gem gets ‘betrayed’ by this persona that she looked up to#and also her own ‘GeminiSlay’ intimidating image is also starting to fall apart. partly of her own will#and now shes watching Pearl slowly turn red again. and this time she knows its not good for her or Pearl#so shes distancing herself from it. shes ‘trying to fix her reputation’. she sees Pearl falling into it again and just. no. i dont love you#you betrayed me last season#but on Pearl’s end of things she’s already deep into the idea that as long as you say you ‘forgive’ someone then everything thats happened#in the past doesn’t matter and they can all be friends. and nooo absolutely no grudges will be held. no emotional repression here#so. because thats happened to her in her own team she thinks the same can happen with her and Gem#and thats so. im going to blow myself up now

Slytherin Boys Personality
I have now been able to do all of the boys personalities. Let me know if there is anything I left out please
Draco Malfoy:
Evil personality that can be redeemed with enough work, or with the love of a certain someone. Refers to his girl as his Princess. Daddy issues.
Ambitious: Drive for power, recognition, and success as well as uphold his family legacy and prove himself as a worthy member of a pure-blood wizard community
Proud: Superiority complex that leads to displays of condescension and arrogance. Can get him into trouble because he may say things that he does not mean out of anger because the prejudice is what he knows
Insecure: Despite outward confidence, struggles with deep seated insecurities that has him constantly seeking validation and approval from his peers (and his parents). This fuels his need to prove himself and maintain a certain image.
Short Temper: Loses his cool very quickly due to his need to be right and prove himself, but will attempt to make it right fairly quickly
Blaze Zabini
Probably the most positive and playful out of the entire group
Loyal: Loyal to a fault. His friends are above everything, even his love interest at times. They are the ones who are going to decide everything for him even if he doesnt realize it is happening
Sensitive: Overly sensitive to the point where he is going to start arguments over little things. He doesnt enjoy PDA because he feels that it makes him look weak and he does not want to be perceived that way. On the plus side, his sensititiviy to things also means he always dresses well and smells really nice
Smart: Definitely the best study buddy. He is the person that others would copy off of it
Playful: The kind of guy that is going to playully tease you but never in a way that will make you upset.
Player: He is attractive and he knows it and will often playfully flirt in order to make things go his way.
Lorenzo Berkshire
Short Temper and Holds a Grudge: Will get angry very quickly and then ignore you for days until he realizes that he misses you and makes it up to you by doing something that shows you that he cares.
Trust Issues: He is the kind of guy that would create a fake account to “catch” you cheating or will flirt with a girl whenever you are talking to much to another boy
Funny: Has a great sense of humor because of all of the things that he has been through in his life. When everything is at his best, he is a very happy person.
Mattheo Riddle
Daddy issues and a drug addict who loves sometimes a little too hard and a little too much
a highly imaginative, highly intelligent, and highly sensitive person, gets into fights
Possessive: He will defend the things and people that belong to him or have value to him and does not care about the consequences
Toxic and loves to party- will be the kind of guy who will pull you back and forth in a relationship but its not because he doesnt actually have feelings for you, but because he doesnt know how to handle them when he does have them.
Tom Riddle
Smart: Smart without even trying and makes it known whenever you make a mistake because you are therefore dumb in comparison
Jealous: What's his is his and he will take anyone down whom he believes is going to take away the things that are his
Anger issues: Does not know how to cool down and won’t admit when he is wrong. Instead, when he realizes that he is even slightly in the wrong he will attempt to make up for it and move past it without actually talking about it
Theodore Nott
French in a lot of ways: Smoker, calls you Bella for beautiful, and is rude
Protective: The kind of person who is going to drop kick anyone that says anything negative about you or any of his people.
Troublemaker: He does not care about the rules so he will do what he has to do in order to make his point known. He is always in trouble of some kind and that gets in the way of a lot of things.
Player: Has had many many girlfriends and has a list of people that he needs to avoid because of the way that he has toyed with and broken their heart

How ¨F.O.N.A.A.! episode is connected to ¨The End¨
One of the episodes from last batch of Tgamm Season 2 is FONAA!. An episode about Scratch using a curse on Molly that makes her fearless for 24 hours. On the surface it looks like a straightforward funny episode about bravery and fear and what it means to be brave- a common lesson you can find in other animated shows.
But one thing i want to discuss is that FONAA! gains a deeper meaning considering the themes of ¨The End¨. It is connected to Scratch’s arc but at the same time it acts as a contrast to the other extreme of how Scratch acted as a human, showing how that can have negative consequences as well.
At the start of the episode Scratch uses this curse so Molly can go pass an ugly statue that is near the entrance of the building where the dentist is. Molly goes to dentist and everything goes fine. Sharon drives them back to home after the appointment finishes.
Back at home, Molly tells to Scratch that she wants to try all things she couldn’t because she was stopped by many of the fears she has. Scratch seems to be on board with this, thinking it just simple things, like Molly touching a spider.
However, he notices that ¨fearless¨ Molly’s behaviour becomes worrying. She acts differently, not caring about respecting the rules or simply leaving detention and skipping school. Molly does all kind of dangerous things during the song sequence, like riding an angry bison on the street, dodging knives, standing very near the ledge of a hill, among other things.
In a way Molly acts the opposite of how Scratch used to act as human and wraith/ghost. While Scratch let his anxieties and fears dominate his life to the point he never allowed himself to take any chances, Molly acts completely reckless, not caring how the things she does could get her in trouble or get her hurt. Without her fear, she doesn’t consider to think when something is actually dangerous nor the risks she is taking.
And i think that is a good lesson to complement the theme of ¨The End¨. That one shouldn’t let anxieties and fears stopping you from living your live but that doesn’tmean it is okay to be totally reckless and not think things through. That fear as feeling can be good since it can prevent us from making senseless decisions and not getting ourselves in very dangerous situations that could be easily avoided.
Near the end of fearless curse, Molly comes with the idea of lauching herself through the sky using a catapult, not caring that she could get herself serverely hurt, if not killed. Scratch tells Molly to come to her senses, not understanding that she still under the influence of the curse.
Molly launches herself through the sky, yelling enhappify as she is flying across the city. Then she notices that the time for the curse finishes and that what she is doing is in fact very dangerous. When she is about to crash, Scratch saves her, Molly tells him that she now has ¨fear of appropiate things¨ and Scratch is just happy she is herself again. Suddenly Scratch crashes into a bird and the two fall to the ground, with Molly safely landing on a pile of leaves, except for one of her tooths getting broken from the fall.
The episode ends with them going back to the dentist, with Molly realizing there is a difference between being ¨fearless¨ and being brave, that being brave means ¨facing your fears, even if you are scared¨ and she goes inside the dentist, quickly passing the statue that scares her so much.
In all, ¨FONAA!¨ shows that fear does have its purpose for us, and that there is a difference between taking risks and not letting fear control every decision you made and not taking care of one self, being completely reckless and not caring about the consequences one can face for breaking certain rules. Being brave and being very impulsive are very different things. It is important to distinguish between the two, as it can help us avoid getting into huge trouble.

so i really love whenever you call mulder & scully best friends. wanna talk about your top 5 favorite moments of their friendship?
DO I EVER
1/ little green men
they have a secret code. they have their own language.
when mulder gets to his desk that morning, the photo of samantha is tipped over, and he knows that this means to meet scully at the watergate. which, first of all, is unbelievably dorky. these two work in the same building. these two have cell phones.
but they have been split up and reassigned and it is not a phase you guys it is the end of the world!!!!
when he arrives in the parking garage, he asks what she wants, and she responds, "to know that you're alright."
they have a secret code and their own language and for nothing more than to check in.
(shoutout to the depression hair era, they are so funny for both getting bangs the moment they were separated. that's how you know things are really bad for the girlies.)
when he sinks down to the floor and tells her the george hale story, she crouches down next to him, listens, tells him not to give up.
you can tell that it makes her uneasy to see him defeated, to see him doubting himself and what he believes in. she's almost trying to convince him of aliens in that moment, telling him that he's seen so much and reminding him of samantha. trying to spark something in him.
they have a secret code, they have their own language, and when he leaves town, he buys the plane ticket under a name that only she will recognize. she cracks his computer password in three tries.
earlier, after skinner questions scully, he tells CSM that she's telling the truth, she really doesn't know where mulder is. "because if she knew, she wouldn't be so worried about him."
they aren't as hard to decipher as they want to believe.
PAUSE!!!!! this is the cuntiest thing he's ever done. the sunglasses, the denim, the boots, the dangerous lack of exit strategy...anyway
she interprets his clues, she follows without obligation, they go back together. hand in his hair, not giving up, just like she started the episode.
in the end, they have nothing. the hail mary trip resulted in empty tables and silent tape recordings.
one thing i didn't notice until i rewatched this one the other day is that it's not when he says "i still have you" that she takes his hand.
it's when he switches the tape from the record of his failed excursion to his actual assignment, hours of listening to slimy men talk about strippers.
she listens with him for a moment before shaking her head, and squeezing his hand. she does understand that this isn't what he wants to be doing, and that it's disheartening.
2/ tooms
i could list every season one episode here. i could do a whole other post just about season one. i could do a whole other post just about season one, and include every episode. but i guess i will settle for this one.
this is my favorite season, and this is my favorite MSR.
him waving the pine tree air freshener in her face when she said he smells 😭😭😭
squeeze was all about the choice between climbing the ladder and the "out there" but "good" work of the basement, with all of the ridicule and consequence that come with it.
its sequel episode is about the aftermath of that decision, what it means to choose the side of the victim, to stop reaching for personal success.
(this shot is so beautiful, her face through CSM's smoke)
tooms opens with scully in a negative performance review, skinner (in his very first scene!! we love you skinman) going over her reports, CSM lurking in the corner.
the two share a look, then warn scully against having too much of an open mind, telling her that it is her "responsibility to see that these cases are by the book"
"by the book" becomes the theme of the episode, with the phrase repeating multiple times throughout.
this isn't the first time that the show has explored this topic, with young at heart also centering a debate of “by the book” protocol, what it really means, and who it really serves. ending with this final dialogue:
SCULLY: Mulder, I know what you did wasn't by the book.
MULDER: Tells you a lot about the book, doesn't it?
“by the book” isn’t an easy order to follow when you have a partner who doesn’t believe in it, and you aren’t sure you do either.
it’s not an easy order to follow, for the navy captain’s daughter who worships authority.
she does try though, and she's initially frustrated with mulder's behavior in the case. she tells him that he "sounded so....." at the trial, and she's reluctant to pursue his methods without approval from the bureau.
ultimately, when she comes to bring mulder something to eat on his unauthorized stakeout, she tells him that what he's doing is not proper surveillance protocol, and he good-naturedly accuses her of peddling "the book."
she responds, "this is not about doing it by the book, this is about you not having slept for three days." and tells him that he is inevitably going to get hurt.
to her, it's not about following the rules or pressure from the bureau or respecting authority, it's about making sure he's okay.
when she tells him to go home, that she'll take over the stakeout, he smiles and shakes his head (it's almost the same look that he gives her years later in redux ii, when she tells him to lay it all on her. just less tears.)
and i know that we tend to focus on the next part of this scene, but this line stands out to me too, as he declines because he doesn't want her to get "in trouble."
he doesn't want her to break the rules or disobey authority, and he still believes she'll be head of the bureau someday.
it kinda makes me teary, this stupefied look on his face at her response. when she looks at him unflinching and says, "mulder, i wouldn't put myself on the line for anybody but you."
they are so kind to each other. they really don't care about official reprimands in files or welfare protocols; they each just want the other to get some rest, to have a bright future.
he relents, allows her to take over, on the condition that she calls "if anything happens. immediately. i'll be here." and suggests she catch the sports talk radio show
she bends down to give him one last smile and eye roll as she exits the car
and makes a joke to herself while walking back to her own. best best best friends.
3/ tempus fugit
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR SPECIALAGENTDANAKATHERINESCULLYYYYY
what better way to celebrate life than annoying the hell out of your best friend on her birthday?
the way he clearly gave the waiters her name and this snowball and sparkler and sang "special agent dana katherine scully" while they all sang "happy birthday dana" is one of his most embarrassingly extra moments and it never fails to make me laugh
she rolls her eyes at him, but the way she stares when he's not looking says so much. they both know why this year gets sparklers and song when last year didn't. they both know there might not be a next year.
he's literally never been more irritatingly overjoyed lmao. and he brought presents! ("oh, you've got to be kidding me" "just something that reminded me of you")
he said "i didn't know it was your birthday, scully!" with a wrapped gift in his pocket, always prepared with a smile and a cover story
he does this same thing in memento mori, after getting the call to come to the hospital, when his first words of the episode are "i stole these from some guy with a broken leg down the hall. he won't be able to catch me." about the flowers we watched him come through the front doors holding
he clearly puts thought into these gestures, but everything is so fragile. neither of them are comfortable with what too much sincerity would mean, how limited it all is.
but they find little ways to give to each other anyway, they hang out in bars and roll their eyes and discuss the meaning behind a keychain.
if this is the last birthday, maybe it's worth a little vulnerability (and annoying song and dance), that he did it up right.
4/ one breath
another Mulder Gift™️ entry. god, the sweetness here is just overwhelming. he is so strange and tries so hard.
this whole scene is one of my favorites of the series, but i love this little moment so much.
it's so inadequate, in the end. to see someone that you thought you'd lost, your most important person, who was gone for so long, and have nothing more to give them than a shitty VHS sports tape.
but what else can you do? he's so quiet and self-conscious in this moment. he raced to the top of mountains and stood on broken cable cars and choked a man and wore her necklace around his neck for months and wept on the floor. he had the strength of her beliefs, and he prayed. he held her hand by her bedside after they pulled the plug.
so much goes unsaid between them, because how can you say it in words? how can you do anything but smile and buy something stupid at the gift shop?
she makes a joke while he smiles at the floor, but it's not a joke, not really. he's there and he's giving her whatever he can and he's cracking jokes, and she knew there was a reason to live. that's it right there.
5/ detour
GO, GIRL!
this is a best friends episode. this is a "we survived that hospital and we refuse to spend our one wild and precious life at the annual FBI teamwork seminar, if you need us, we'll be lost in the forest" episode.
look at her trying not to laugh while he's making sarcastic comments at her in the backseat. can you imagine carpooling with these two? they are forever passing notes and whispering behind backs.
she is not making it to the teamwork seminar. she is not getting her wine and cheese, either. she is looking for mothmen in western florida.
they think they're so much better than that communication exercise, just to make vague innuendo in a motel room.
they tell each other all about native species and how ticks can halt their metabolism and the livestock that was killed in a town 30 years ago. she teases him about his filing system.
neither of them tire of bashing the hell out of that teamwork seminar.
they talk about death. about searching for meaning in life. about which flintstones character they relate to the most. they swap dirty jokes.
she fusses over his grave injury (a dislocated shoulder) and holds him. sings to him so that he'll know she's still there.
a few years down the road, she'll sing that same song to their baby, on one of her last days with him. she'll sing to him about this night, about his dad, about her favorite memories.
sitting there together in that forest in florida, they have already started to carry the weight of near-misses. of lost time, of almosts, of purposeful disease.
they have come a long way and taken on a lot, in the years since the parked car outside tooms' house and the garage at the watergate.
but they have yet to be separated longer than 90 days. they have yet to lose a child. they have yet to plan funerals and prison breaks.
there's something about that time, that ability to just sit in the woods and talk about everything, looking for mothmen, that is so precious and so special.
and when she tells him that night that she had struggled to find meaning, that's where it is.
#thank you for this#dream assignment#they ARE best friends#and it's my favorite#msr#asks#little green men#tooms#tempus fugit#one breath#detour#kae meta

not to continue beating a dead horse but i saw the og post earlier ( got curious when i saw your posts ) and the line about the comparison with shizuo is so funny to me. like yeah it is absolutely true that shizuo is doing his best to carry on with his day and people keep fucking with him etc etc BUT. unclear how to phrase this but the underlying implication that shizuo is "better" less so because of his actions themselves and more so because the "negative" things about him ( his anger issues obvi ) are beyond his control and therefore not to be held against him entirely whereas izaya's action are entirely in his control and of his own volition ( which does such a disservice to both characters imo ) no sir absolutely no impulsive poorly calculated decisions that have consequences for him later. you fell for the character's facade meant to be dismantled by the viewer etc
we love beating dead horses in this house. say something stupid and we get to clown on you forever. those are the rules
ALSO YEAH LITERALLY TEXUALLY IZAYAS ISSUES ARE OUT OF HIS CONTROL. like.
literally right there. and you cant even be like "uuuhjffnfnbut in the anime" LOOK CLOSELY. duarara rewards reading between the lines and izaya as a character starts off with a facade that slowly crumbles and if you still believe the facade by the end then you're stupid point blank.
which like, its Fine to not be able to analyze a show, its whatever, its not a thing everyone can do ESPECIALLY as they watch a show in real time for the first time. but dont act like you had some kind of Grand Revalation about the show and then talk down to people who have been here for YEARS, decades even, because they disagree with you, and then insult shit like their age! this guy just made something up about izaya and then "dunked" on his fans because of this imagined attribute
and yeah treating shizuo as Absolved bc he Didnt Mean To does a huge disservice to him as well, wether or not he Meant To, things still happened and people were still hurt, the NUANCE behind it is whats important!! i do strongly believe that if you want to truly understand this show you need to do away with the idea of "good people" and "bad people." novody is a wholly Good Person and nobody is a wholly Bad Person and people are COMPLICATED, especially the people in durarara, and if you try to slot them into Good Person and Bad Person categorization then all youll do is do a disservice to the characters and the writing itself
and i have talked about this EXTENSIVELY on here but izaya is important to me because he seems to be intentionally coded to be a sociopath. like, i said this in my other post:
he was a young boy with clear mental problems, to the point where his father instilled that people love into him in order to prevent a worse outcome and help him be more normal. the way this is framed, as a young boy exhibiting a concerning disconnect from other people to a point where it scares a usually neglectful father into acting- is very reminiscent of media depictions (and real life examples) of parents worrying that their child is a sociopath. this could very well have been intentional, and narita EXPLICITLY makes a POINT to state that izaya is the way that he is because he has a fragile heart- any sort of genuine effection and a betrayal of it could shatter him.
and it means a lot to me that in a show full of subverting Tropes About Bad People, "the sociopath" as a trope was one of them and it ended up making an incredibly raw and honest portrayal of what having aspd is like- both in the hurting other people sense AND the suffering of the person actually with the disorder, which is something not really explored at ALL in Media About Sociopaths. i talk a lot more about izaya's possible coding HERE if youre curious, but izaya as a character is very important to me because its a kind of portrayal not really seen. so it sucks when people completely disregard any and all nuance behind him bc he makes them ~uncomfy~ and then has the audacity to make it our problem as well
also this is just an aside based on my own dislike of him at age 16, plus i earned the right to be a jackass tbh: a lot of people hate izaya bc on some level they know theyd be one of those suicide girls that has no real answer to why they want to kill themselves and flouder when asked about it, not understanding the weight of suicide in the slightest and yet still saying that theyll do it
(know or at least THINK; i was pretty insecure back then but i really wasnt Like That, i knew full well what suicide meant. but i wanna be mean so im built different. just me)
anyway yeah fuck that hater ass bitch
ALSO the idea that shizuo is in the clear bc "people keep fucking with him" is LAUGHABLE bc that includes people like. asking him a question or being mildly annoying or in the wrong place at the wrong time. dumb to the fucking ass!!!!

@siezult
Alright, so.
Why did Basil show up? Because this is a dramatic scene and the drama genre relies on inconveniences to make the situation worse for the characters and progress the plot. Yeah it is convenient, but thats kinda the point?
It's one thing when the situation is made worse via a believable circumstance that is, even if it's slightly improbable, is explained by the story itself. I can suspend my disbelief then. It is, however, very different when the situation is made worse via a random occurence that's not only highly improbable, but is left entirely unexplained. In the latter case, it's usually bad writing.
Contrived coincidences are not inherently a bad trope. Tropes are tools, after all. There's a reason said trope is mostly used in comedies, though - make a coincidence too contrived in any other genre, and the story intended to be serious will become farce instead.
If you want an in-universe reason, Basil’s parents arent there to drive him to the ceremony, so he decides to stay at sunny’s house the night before so they can take him there.
There is no proof of this in the game.
I wouldn’t say she “didn’t tolerate mistakes”
I never said that either.
I wouldn’t say its out of character for her to react that way because its perfectly human to react negatively when annoyed, especially when its about something she really cares about like her music. I think it shows more of her character that she isn’t perfect all the time and will sometimes have a bad side.
My point was that her 'bad side" is only relevant to the story when it's needed to give Sunny a reason to lash out at her. It has no bearing on her character otherwise. I've said as such in the post.
Finally, why are you insinuating that Sunny is this awful person?
Because I have proof he is.
Like, yes, his accident was awful, and he shouldn’t have lied to everyone, but at the same time, he was fucking 12. A mortified 12-year old scared shitless of what will happen to him after people find out about his manslaughter will obviously make dumb decisions; he clearly wasn’t thinking straight at the time and was just doing what he got told would “fix” the situation.
Honestly, I'm sick of this argument. I've seen it so many times it's not even funny at this point.
1) You're talking about Sunny as if you are defending a real kid. He is a fictional character whose decisions have been predetermined by an adult writer, and thus I will judge said decisions accordingly.
2) "He's 12" removes Sunny's agency as a character - by your logic and the logic of essentially everyone using this argument, he can't be held responsible for anything bad he ever does for the sole reason of being a stupid kid. A 12 yo may be immature, impulsive and inexperienced, but not necessarily stupid.
3) A "mortified" 12-year-old who "wasn't thinking straight at the time" would not feel "at peace" upon seeing his sister's hanged body.
If anything you should be mad at Basil for making the decision to lie and dragging Sunny in on it.
1) Basil wouldn't have needed to lie if it wasn't for Sunny fucking up in the first place lmao
2) It's true Basil created the lie, but it was Sunny who chose to uphold it.
I think being a depressed, suicidal, possibly anorexic shut-in for 4 years is quite a punishment.
An entirely internal and self-inflicted one, yes. My point was that he suffers no external consequences (e.g. his friends leaving him since they're pissed at him), and the canonical state of the group after the confession is left ambiguous.
I'm not going to feel bad for an asshole whose only remarkable trait is feeling bad for himself all the time without ever doing much.
it’s implied Sunny’s parents knew, and was the reasoning for his dad leaving.
Source that isn't a single contextless quote in Black Space 2?
If his parents actually knew the truth all along, they woukd've been a lot more relevant to the game's plot. As it is, it's more likely the father left because the suicide of his daughter destroyed the marriage.
him “conveniently skipping town” wasn’t his choice. He didn’t intend to avoid repercussions by moving
That's why the word "conveniently" is there - it's true it wasn't his choice to move, but it still reads as a convenient way for the story to let him off the hook.
him moving was the catalyst for the games events as its when sunny decides to tell his friends the truth and give them closure, meaning Sunny is well aware that his friends would likely hate him, but thinks it would be for the better for them to know.
1) Source?
2) This implies Sunny would've been perfectly content to continue upholding Basil's lie were it not for external circumstances forcing him to come clean.
3) Given that Sunny wants to come clean purely for his own peace of mind, this also implies Sunny doesn't decide to reveal the truth out of a genuine desire to make things right - he wants to do it just because he has a deadline and he needs to get his weight off his shoulders while he still has the time.

I was looking at some reviews for girl from nowhere and i'm surprised that so many people don't get what the series is trying to say. so, i'm gonna give my opinions based on some of the bad reviews i saw, maybe giving another insight.
starting with this review I saw where the person calls the actor who plays nanno a bad actor, mostly because of her laugh — nanno's laugh sounds like that bc it's supposed to be inhuman and weird, it's supposed to piss others off, it's not supposed to be a villains laughter (nanno isn't even a villain). this person also goes on a rant about every episode, and in episode 2 they say that it was not realistic for nanno to be able to endure everything she did... don't they know that nanno is not human? ofc no human would be able to endure that, she isn't one and because of that she doesn't really feel pain, empathy, or remorse and they use this supernatural being to make social comments in a way they wouldn't be able to otherwise. then they go on about and just minimize every episode to a few words, clearly misunderstanding the themes. the only episode this person seemed to understand is the 10th, which is funny to me bc it was the one i had a hard time understanding (still don't), and it's actually my least favorite from season 1. then they end saying they hope they improve chicha's laugh, which makes it pretty clear where the real problem for OP was.
another thing i've seen some people have a difficulty to realize is that nanno is not a character made to feel sorry for other people, at least not in the first season (with one exception). she is not human, she doesn't have human-like emotions. and also, she is, supposedly, a representation of karma, but if you pay attention she isn't the one to make those people do that things, the consequences come naturally, she is never the one to hurt the other characters physically, because nanno is about karma, not revenge (that's yuri).
i've seen people talking about how she "leads" the characters to do things, and they normally use dino, from season 1, episode 4 as an example, so i'll use him too. in dino's case he is lying way before nanno got there, but lying isn't as bad as everything else in this show, so we move on. then, he goes to nanno to ask her to help him, which she does. he takes his friend to this big house, that he says it's his. the staff working there is his parents, but he does nothing to prevent his friends from insulting his parents, not even when they are physically abusive. people seem to pity him and taking in account the previous episodes, i can see why they would, but in the end, the message was clear: rich people do the worst shit and nothing happens to them. not only that, but nanno never made dino do anything, he was lying before she even got there, he accepted the mistreatment of his friends towards his parents, and I question myself: if they weren't his parents but just two random people, would he feel bad for them?
nanno never makes someone do something, what she does is give them another way to follow, and the consequences comes naturally from that. and one thing that i saw some people not paying attention to is that, sometimes, just nanno's presence is enough to start chaos. there were episodes where she didn't even interact with the characters all that much, but that still raised rage in them. she doesn't make people do bad things, they took this choice and if you see, they go even further than what nanno originally suggests.
but i did agree with some of these negative reviews. one of the reviews talked about this episode on season 2 where there is a beauty competition in this school, and people are rewarded for their beauty. this episode for me lost some of its message when the only way the fat girl was seen as beautiful was when she lost way. i know this is accurate to some place's beauty standard, but after seeing those girls beat each other to be the number one, having a fat girl be the number one would really drive the point home. also agree that some episodes aren't as good, but overall the show is great and it's themes are really good once you start to pay attention.
#nanno#girl from nowhere#series analysis#im just ranting#people need to pay more attention to things#also why are they analyzing this with things that are realistic when the protagonist is literally not human

Joe flr character bingo? 👀
sorry anon i was outside in the garden planting raspberry bushes. anyway this is SUCH a good one and I am kinda mad there are so few squares I can tick off for Joe bc i genuinely love him but not like That
Joe is such a comfort character for me in a very diff way. he makes my daddy issues go brrrrr cos THIS is a dad. THE dad of all time. if i could pick any dad ever to have instead of mine i think i'd pick him.
I think he's so fucking funny first of all. it's my fave thing to put him in a fic and just. mess with him. im poking him with a stick. im watching his blood pressure go up. i'm making him deal with leonard snart and he's about to explode every time they're in a room together. i just. have so many affectionate feelings for him and his seething hatred of this man. and the earth 2 version where he's exactly like that but to BARRY? iconic. no notes. rip earth 2 joe you were a bitch and i miss you sm
THAT BEING SAID there are things about him that make me go "you should have faced more consequences for that. go sit in a corner and think about what you've done." namely bullying iris out of being a cop (acab etc. etc. but still shitty of him), the whole thing where he was like BARRY, WHY DIDN'T YOU ASK MY PERMISSION TO MARRY IRIS (and iris AGREED 🤮🤮🤮 who the fuck was in charge of the writers' room that day, i just wanna talk), the fact that he can be overbearing and controlling of his kids and very jaded in a lot of ways... idk he's a flawed character and every character needs some negative aspects so none of these things affect my love for him but sometimes i am shaking my head in disapproval...
as for canon. this is true of everything but MAN did they drop the ball with him towards the end... i get why they had joe quit ccpd given the political situation at the time and i support that 100% but first of all, having a Black character go "hey the police force in my city is inherently corrupt and i can no longer be complicit in its enforcement" (true and correct) while their white hero just does not acknowledge that corruption and continues to work for the same establishment completely uncritically was... perhaps not sending the message they intended... i mean it's honestly almost funny cos that is very much a reflection of the actual systems but. maybe they could have thought about that one a bit more...
and they really should have given joe something else to do cos he ended up sorta directionless after that. in fairness i know jesse l martin has back problems so i think them having him sitting down chilling at home as a stay at home dad was perhaps borne of necessity in a lot of ways but they defo could have done more interesting things with the character. im not OPPOSED to sahd joe but it does seem like a bit of a waste cos it would just be like. every episode joe shows up for a pep talk then goes back to being the full-time stay at home parent for a child we literally never see except one time when a window explodes in her face, which brings me to my NEXT point---
writing joe out with LITERALLY like 8 eps to go? stupid. again i respect that jesse l martin had HAD it with this show (tbf who hadnt by this point) and he wanted out, of course he had every right to do that, but purely based on the context of the show, i hate that they had him leave central city like that and move so far away when we were so close to the finish line. HAAATE it. the show was basically on life support from that point on. it was possibly worse than when we lost cisco. joe was the heart of it, man. it just wasn't the same :(
but yes I LOVE JOE, he is the only fictional dad i respect and i love ruining his life

Gatekeeping
You know what I can't stand? When you read a book (a popular one, mind you), and even though it has 5 stars left right up and down, the negative reviews are what dominates the top of the reviews page. And in reading their reviews, you realize, well the reason they didn't like it is mainly because it's not their usual cup of tea in reading. How many reviews I've read (and not just this most recent one) where the reviewers can't stand the book because of its slow pacing.
As a disclaimer, blurbs usually determine if I'll read a book. If the blurb piques my curiosity, I'll skim a few reviews, with a grain of salt. If it seems relatively positive in terms of the actual content of the story, the book will go on my to-read list. Otherwise, I don't read reviews in full until after I finish a book. And if I really like the book, then I'll 100% read its reviews, mainly bad just to see why some people thought that way.
And it always leaves a sour impression. I'm cynical, but this just feeds my cynicism.
Maybe some of us actually enjoy slow pacing. Maybe some readers like the side stories and the attention to detail. Not everyone's brain is meant to stop and smell the roses. It's small minds like theirs that a) should not be reading 900+ page books, b) leaving bad reviews because it was too "slow", c) stick to fast-paced brainless contemporary stories with cliched twists, and d) if the bad review has to do with your own personal preference, then stfu, say so, and appreciate a book for what it is. I also don't exactly like the fact that one can leave a review on a book that they never actually finished. Like, they've only read 10% of the book (or less), and that gives them the right to leave a 1 star review which consequently becomes one of the highest rated reviews? Tf is that about.
Is this gatekeeping on my part? Absolutely. There's a reason why such a term exists because it just feels that more often than not, a non-genre reader comes in, mocks and tears up the author's style, then the average review reader this one star reviews, assumes 'oh, this must suck,' and does a pass on it. Meanwhile, it could have been the one written piece that could have spoken to them as a reader, but since a 'funny' 'popular' review created the impression that an author failed at writing the story or sucks as an author (same thing), they've missed out on a perfectly enjoyable experience that could have brought them the amazing experience that only a good book can give, that unique connection one makes with the words and emotions on a page that can be found nowhere else.
My point is, think twice before leaving a bad review. I don't leave a bad review 9.9/10 times, mainly because I know my taste in books and writing greatly differ from the modern or contemporary opinion. I like books from the 19th and 20th century. I like textbooks. My taste in humor is not like youtube. And there are contemporary writers who also enjoy the same, and it shows in their plot buildup and patient steady character development. And then there is also that appreciation for reading something relaxing, not edge-of-the-seat nail-biting suspense, but rather something that calms and where one can get a full sensory admiration for the setting and characters via word choice and visualization… because after all, writing is an art. Not just entertainment. Sometimes, entertainment is exactly that: relaxing, slow, easy, simple. It doesn't need to have a massive plot twist (or vulgar, etc.) to be enjoyable.
I hate this modern need for constant entertainment. Just slow down. And if you can't slow down, or don't like to slow down, then realize that in yourself and don't bash the people who actually enjoy taking it slow.
#reading#books#writer's life#leaving reviews#book reviews#not everyone has the same opinion or likes#controversial reviews aren't fair when it comes to content#but they sure do make for popularity#popular versus quality#i'll take quality anyday over brainless baiting

i don't think this needs a tw. maybe for talk of physical appearance if that would be triggering to anyone.
im sort of looking to vent but id like advice or resources if you have any to offer
after having my hair long I decided to cut it short. I've had short hair for most of my life before that so I wasn't afraid or anything. I had a specific style with pictures and specific instructions, but it was a bit of an unconventional hairstyle and the stylist modified it to make it much more conventional. now it looks strikingly like my hair did in some of the worst times of my life
looking in the mirror is genuinely triggering now. I feel absolutely awful all the time. I can barely stomach the thought of going places or seeing people, even people I love because I hate how I look so so much. funny enough, i felt that way about going places and seieng people in the dark times that this haircut reminds me of.
its too short for me to cut a different style unless I want to do a buzz cut which I really don't want. I'm allergic to lots of dyes and don't have the money to buy different brands of hairdye only to do a skin test and find out I'm allergic to all of them, and my hair is so dark that methods like using kool-aid wouldn't do anything. I can't afford a decent wig either. I don't own many hats and even if I did it's getting hotter where I live so it would be too hot to wear them anyway.
i feel obligated to pretend to like it because it does look good on me and I'm already tired of hearing "omg why don't you like it it's so cute!" I don't really have an excuse to not like it besides explaining that oh yeah, I have cptsd and this haircut is one of my biggest triggers but that isn't exactly something id like to share with most people.
on top of that, taking the time to take care of my appearance and taking pride in how I look is one of the main things that helped me get out of that dark place and is almost like self care for me, but now I can't so much as look in a mirror without wanting to cry.
before this my self esteem was higher than it'd ever been. it took one haircut to absolutely destroy that. I don't know what to do with myself
Hey there anon,
First, I am so sorry your stylist did that. As a cosmetologist myself, I'm actually appalled that they would make their own edits to a style you wanted just because they wanted it to be more conventional without asking you. You deserved better.
Honestly, I would try going to a different salon, and asking a stylist there for recommendations. Obviously, I can't tell exactly how short your cut is here, but I'm sure with a good stylist you can come to some sort of conclusion on how to help you.
In the meantime, I don't know how you tend to style it, but styling it differently may help as well (if possible) or even highlighting some of it with bleach. (As it's not a dye, you're far less likely to be allergic to it, though it can be rather harsh, so it may itch or burn if gotten/left on skin.) Hair chalk or similar may also be an option to add temporary colour without dye
It's okay to be triggered by this, and it's okay not to like the haircut despite it objectively looking good for your face shape. It wasn't what you wanted, wasn't what you asked for, and has had serious negative consequences on your mental health and self-esteem. You can definitely try some typical trigger coping methods such as grounding as well, reminding yourself that you have moved on from that period in time, taking inventory of your current self and surroundings, and reassuring yourself that your future doesn't have to be anything like your past.
I'm so sorry this happened to you nonny, and I hope that it can be righted soon.
Best Wishes
-Mod Night

anyway uhhhhh. scattered thoughts about Spanner In The Works time
the whole idea for this plot started out because when celise last met epsilo he was very close to just straight-up killing them, and while that crisis was avoided i liked the idea of celise dying and getting resurrected due to vernrot's eldritch influence so i decided to roll with that for my own plot
lucy being the culprit just made sense to me given how it is established that he does kill tourists whenever the various entities at vernrot require a troll sacrifice, and then i was thinking Hey What If That Had Consequences
... and also i had that scene where vallis figures out that lucy is drunk because he's listening to his bodily functions using his eldritch senses stuck in my head and wanted to write that. i love vallis' lowkey freak shit
that was. about the extent of of pre-planning i did before writing those five drabbles LMAO most of the stuff came to me while i was writing, or i was thinking about the next drabble while writing the one i was currently working on
lucy wasn't originally going to call upon the horrorterrors to save celise, but something about that moment of being so delirious from blood loss and regret/grief that you call out to anyone who would hear for some sort of solace was really evocative to me that i just had to include it. and it helped tie vallis into the plot for Part 4 even if he was mostly used as exposition
as an aside, i thought it was really funny how vallis talks about being disappointed that celise wants nothing to do with him, only for it to be revealed in the next drabble that they were so out of it they dont even remember him being there
celise is a frog zombie for multiple reasons 1. they are a frog troll and making them more froglike sounded fun; 2. vernrot's horrorterrors tend to warp people by giving them more aquatic qualities so amphibious bullshit made sense to me; 3. i like frogs; and 4. celise fucking hates weird zombies so this was such an ironic and mean fate to give them. id actually been debating for years if celise should have an inexplicable frog tongue mutation because i thought itd be funny if they could just. eat flies out of the air with it, but i always worried it mightve been Too Weird And Gross that i didnt go ahead with it... Until now. if anyone gets weird about it im beating you to death
i genuinely forgot that celise was a vegetarian too, so i had to pivot hard towards them having to deal with the horror of eating meat in After Pain so that ended up a lot more visceral than i initially intended. though i did have to rewrite one part because i got so into writing a contrast between celise's disgust between eating meat and how their new instincts desperately crave it and it tastes irresistible to them now that started sounding a bit vaguely erotic and i went FUCK OH NO GO BACK LMFAOOO. dungeon meshi changed me as a person
but yeah unfortunately for them their diet has completely flipped and they can only eat meat now! they can stomach animal meats fine but it doesn't sate them nearly as much as troll meat does, and for those who skipped the emeto scene the main thing worth noting is that ordinary food tastes rotten to them now. big rip
also the timeline is just vague enough that its ambiguous who left the offering at the end. was it the horrorterrors looking after their newest creation? or was it lucy trying to repent for what he had done to them? vote now on your phones
and i think i made it clear enough, but the thing that the horrorterrors took away from them was their ability to feel intense amounts of anger, which now when they get angry they start feeling really hungry instead. funny how they constantly denied their ability to feel negative emotions and anger to the point where they dissociated themself from the emotion entirely, and once they finally acknowledged it, it was taken away from them and the absence is so much worse. on the bright side, theyll be a little less insufferable to deal with now, so lucy did one thing right by killing them :)

:watermelon: :strawberry::pear:
🍉 : which of the four seasons suits my muse best, and why? answered here
🍓 : how is my muse typically seen by others? does it ring true to who they really are? does their reputation matter to them?
Dallas in general i would have to say is off putting to most, in fact many look at him and hate him on first introduction. I can explain this in one word, jealousy. Now i know you're thinking that's full of shit why would they be jealous of him, because they don't know him. He's tall, he's handsome and when he speaks he does have the ability to be charming if he tries and that breeds a lot of distaste -- not to mention when he isn't charming and kind it pisses people off because he refuses to let them into his world. It angers them because it makes others feel inferior almost like they aren't good enough to be on his radar. Now this doesn't ring true at all to who dallas really is. He's actually quite low key and doesn't like a whole bunch of attention ( he is funny and goofy but that doesn't mean he wants to show everyone that side of him ). Now let me repeat that he is capable of being charming and shining under a spotlight, but he does not want it. Not really.
Now you're thinking, why would someone who doesn't want the spotlight wanna be in a band or any of these things? well being passionate about something means there are consequences and sacrifices we make to do it. One was being in the public eye, but ever since dallas was fifteen he'd been in the publics eye. He'd been sent death threats, called a hero, pitied, hated -- he'd been exposed to every shade so he didn't fear being in the spotlight. Now the cult didn't want that so they ruined his chances of it by killing his best friend and former drummer and that essentially took the passion out of the art.
As far as a reputation, he does not care about it at all. In no way shape or form does he lose sleep over what people think of him. He doesn't have it in him to care how people perceive him or react to him, its a personal problem how you take him a first glance especially if he didn't have those intentions in place. A lot of this he has learned from going to therapy and he six months he stayed in a mental ward under observation.
🍐 : how intelligent is my muse overall? are they smarter than the average person, or less than? are they primarily self-taught, or did they acquire most of their knowledge in school? are they more street smart or book smart?
Dallas is incredibly intelligent. I mean its almost criminal how he doesn't really use his intelligence to its full capacity. He isn't a genius by any marks, but he is highly intelligent and has a very healthy appetite for learning things. He attributes this a lot to not being allowed to take a big initiative in school, any attention good or bad brought on a negative reaction out of his father. He is primarily self taught because after he moved in with his grandmother at the end of 15 to cusp of 16; he wasn't behind in his academic level but he wasn't willing to really listen to others.
He's learned a lot of what he knows through books and essays; he's got a really good ability of absorbing information through text rather than listening. He can listen don't get him wrong, he prefers to see it and digest it on his own time. He is definitely more street smarts than he is book smart. This comes from having to survive; you didn't think he'd be out of the woods did you? his father killed over fourteen people and now they know his face. It doesn't matter if he killed his dad, blood for blood and they wanted him. He learned the signs, the way people talk -- how to watch. It was pretty evident by his teachers and grandmother early on that he had a natural attraction to psychology and sociology; he is good at people watching.
That's helped him stay alive. He is very smart and very much always trying to have the one hand up.

The Brothers reaction when MC slaps their ass
Lucifer
As usual, Lucifer listened to some classical music and poured himself a glass of wine to relax a bit.
Once he was done, he brought the glass to his lips and took a sip, savoring the taste.
"Mhm," he hummed to the sound of the melody and blissfully closed his eyes, enjoying the quiet moment he was having.
Much to his dismay, you entered his office without making yourself noticable.
Now dont get me wrong, he loves enjoys your company.
But not when your main goal is to tease him.
An thats exactly what you were doing.
You grinned mischievously as you slowly crept up to him, his back turned to you.
Since he was in his own state of mind, he didn't noticed anything.
That was until you reached your hand out.
In that milisecond, Lucifer's senses were tingling and his eyes shot open, turning around as fast as lightning.
But it was too late.
He only watched as your right hand colided with his left buttcheek, giving it a good squeeze afterwards.
Lucifer jumped and just stared at you in shock, processing what just happend.
And you just stood there with an empty expression, your eyes starring at your palm.
"Wow, your butt is actuallly softer than I thought".
Lucifer furrowed his brows in anger and shook his head.
"MC".
"Yeah?" You asked, looking up at him innocently.
Lucifer had that closed eyed smile with an dark aura surrounding him.
"Now, what made you think this was an good idea, MC?".
You shrugged and slowly walked backwards, shivering nervously "I dont know.. I was just curious?"
"Curious?" He met up with your steps and tilted his head to the side, his smile never leaving
He became dangerously close, making you more nervous than you already are.
You felt your back hitting the wall and your eyes widened.
Oh lord...
Lucifer slammed his palm beside your head, caging you.
You flinched and looked to the ground, feeling suddenly so tiny under him.
Lucifer cupped your cheek and made you look back up at him, a sadistic smile on his lips.
"Such inappropriate behavior should be punished, MC"
I leave the rest up to your imagination.
Mammon
Mammon was walking beside you as always, being practically attached to your hip (nothing new).
You guys were at R.A.D on your way to the cafeteria, since it was break time.
The greedy demon beside you rambled about that new scheme to make money, and you once again had to talk him out of it.
"Ya! It aint a dumb idea!" He protested.
"It is Mammon. Just think about Lucifers reaction and the consequences," you shook your head "Want to hang from the ceiling that bad?".
Mammon only scuffed, turning his head to the side.
You glanced over to him and noticed a visible pout on his lips, making him look like a child.
"Hey, Mammon".
"Hm?" He looked over at you "What's up?".
You raised your hand and reached over for his bottom, smiling sweetly at him.
"Cheer up".
He was about to question you, but before he could even start his sentence, you cutted him off with a real loud smack on his ass.
Mammons stopped dead in his tracks and his eyes widened in shock "W-what?".
Once realisation kicked in, his face flushed in an intsant.
"O-oi, human! Whats the big deal slappin' my butt like that?!". He yelled at you, looking like a fricking tomato.
You couldnt help but let out a few chuckles, highly amused by his reaction.
"Ya! It aint funny!"
Thanks to his loud voice, the whole hallway now knew what just had happened.
Leviathan
Leviathan walked down the stairs to the dining room.
He was really excited because he finally got his hands on the new Ruri-chan merchandise that came out.
"Woaah! I cant believe I got that limited edition figurine!, its SO rare and the new outfit- its just soo angelic-"
Levi being caught in his own ramblings didnt noticed that you were walking beside him.
"And that new hairstyle! I cant believe Ruri-chan could get even more cuter than she already is-"
"Say Levi, to who'm are you talking to?"
"WAh!", Levi jumped slightly at the sound of your voice and almost tripped over his own foot.
"Wha- MC!? How long have you been here!?"
You smiled at him and grabbed his shoulder for support, preventing him from falling down the stairs.
"There there, calm down. I didnt heard much".
Levi let out an sigh of relief and turned to you.
"Yeah right, I mean who would want to listen to an yucky otaku like me?".
You facepalmed in your mind and sighed, he really needs more confidence.
Leviathan kept walking and pitying himself, mumbling random stuff.
He has such a negative mindset.
You walked up behind him not thinking much.
But then you stared at his head and then his back,
Eventually your eyes landed on his bottom.
You smirked to yourself as you just ran past him, giving his butt a hard and loud smack.
Levi yelped in surprise and stood still, overwhelmed with what just had happened.
His hand grabbed his right buttcheek and rubbed it, being too shocked to react.
You turned around and waved at him. "Damn Levi, you really got an nice butt there! Im soo jealous!"
You then disapperaed in the dining room.
Levis brain needed a whole minute to process what just had happened.
And then he became a stuttering mess.
"M-M-MC! W-what was that now?!, h-hey wait!" He hid his flushed face behind the back of his hand as he stumbled after you.
Ngl he was kinda happy you touched him.
Satan
Satan was on kitchen duty, cooking his curry.
He invited you to join and help, so you guys could spend some time together.
And theres no way you would ignore that chance.
So here you were beside him, giving him the ingredients he asks for and making some small talk.
"Did you know that Beel almost ate my hair in his sleep?" You sighed "Im lucky im not bald".
Satan glimpsed at you and raised his eyebrow, shaking his head, "His hunger really doesnt know its limits".
He looked up, "Well speaking of sleep, I had an unpleasant dream last night."
You handed him the spoon and nodded "What was it about?"
Satan sighed, "Beel ate too much and grew to be a giant. He then ate the House of Lamentation, leaving the rest of us homeless".
You laughed, "Why do I have a feeling that could actually happen?"
Satan frowned "He already eats plates, its only a matter of time until he starts eating the walls".
You chuckled, intending to jokingly slap his arm.
But since you werent focused on what you were doing, you didnt notice how your slap landed right on his butt.
Satan dropped the spoon he was holding and looked at you with wide eyes.
"What are you doing?"
You turned to him with an confused expression "Did I do something wrong?"
Satan cocked an eyebrow and leaned his head to the side "You just slapped my butt".
Now its your turn to look at him with wide eyes. "I did what now?".
Satan didnt knew if you were joking or not, and it was kinda ticking him off.
"My butt. You slapped it".
"No I only slapped your arm- ohh wait..." you chuckled.
"What is so funny?" He asked you with furrowed brows.
"Sorry Satan, I wasnt focusing on what I was doing and accidently slapped your butt instead of your arm," You shrugged "My bad".
Satan nodded and turned back to what he was doing "Next time be more careful, or I will return the gesture".
You smirked and leaned over to him "I wouldnt mind that".
He will remember that.
Asmodeus
Asmo was having a mid-life crisis.
He was on one of his diets, because his waist gained 1 millicentimeter.
You assured him that a little more weight always looks good and healthy but he wont listen.
So here you were infront of him, eating one of his favorite Cupcakes.
"MC darling, why do you have to torture me like that?"
He whined "Its not faair!"
You just shrugged "I have another cupcake left for you, but since you're on your little 'diet' I will give it to Beel."
He sighed and dropped his head on the table "Does my pain bring you pleasure?".
You frowned "I-"
Asmo gasps and sat back up straight. "Dont tell me your into that stuff?, Wow!"
He smiled and wiggled in his chair.
You sighed and shook you head "Asmodeus, stop".
He pouted "You're no fun..".
After some time you finally finished the cupcake and Asmodeus had reached his limit.
He watched as you stood up and walk towards to the kitchen.
"Wait, what are you doing?" He also stood up and followed you.
"I will bring the cupcake to Beel-"
"No, wait!" he grabbed your wrist and stared at you.
You looked back at him "What is it, Asmodeus?".
He glimpsed to the side "I dont want him to eat my cupcake.."
You clicked your tounge and pulled him towards you, making him stumble to the side
"What are you doi- AH!" He moaned yelped in surprise as you slapped his ass.
"Just eat that damn Cupcake. Its not like you will gain 10kg from it".
He blushed "Oooooh MC! That really made me excited! How harsh you pulled my wrist-"
You just let go of him and left the room.
"MC where are you going?, you cant just leave me here!"
Beelzebub
Beelzebub asked you to keep him company while working out.
And of course you said yes.
So now you sat there, on the bench with a towel in hand, enjoying the view infront of you.
Beelzebubs biceps flexed as he lifted weights, and his white tanktop was drenched in sweat, making it transparent.
His abs showed through the fabric and you blushed.
How can this man be so big and muscular?
You blinked when he stopped his workout and laid the weights back down.
He grabbed his bottle from the floor and drank from it, taking big gulps.
You decided to stand up and walked over to him.
"Hey, Beel"
Beel lowered the bottle from his mouth and smiled at you "Hey, MC!"
You smiled back, and held the towel in your hand out to him, "Here take this".
"Thanks" He nodded at you and grabbed it, wiping the sweat on his face away.
"So, how is the workout going so far?" You asked couriously.
"Im still warming up" he replied.
You blinked, Still at warming up, huh?.. impressive.
"But im starting to feel hungry..." Beel pouted.
You laughed "You can do it Beelzebub, I believe in you".
He blushed and smiled at you "Thanks, MC!"
So cute.
You nodded and patted his shoulder "Sure".
Beel proceeded to start his warm up again, starting with some sit-ups.
But you had other plans.
"Beel wait!" You ran up to him.
He stopped what he was doing and looked over at you "What is it, MC?"
Before he could fully turn his body to you, he felt a stinging sensitation on his butt.
He looked at you startled, now realising you slapped it.
"Wow Beel, your buttcheeks are pretty hard.. are they made of iron or something?" You hold your hand up to your face.
Beel blushed slightly, not knowing what to do or say.
You just shrugged and turned around, marching towards the bench you were sitting on.
But suddenly, you felt a light clap on your own butt.
You gasped, "What-, Beel?!" You looked behind you and saw him standing there, smiling.
"Your butt feels really soft and nice, MC". he chuckled, "Is that a human thing to do?"
"Beel no-"
Belphegor
Belphegor was taking a nap in the attic, skipping the student council meeting.
And since you were coming late to the meeting due to some complications, Lucifer ordered you to search for Belphie and bring him there along with you.
And thats how you ended up infront of the attic, clearly annoyed.
"Belphegor," you spoke as you opened the door "I know you're in here".
The youngest brother laid on the bed, snoring and cuddling into his cow pillow.
You walked over to him and shook him "Hey Belphegor! Wake up!"
He stirred in his sleep and furrowed his brows.
Eventually he opened one eye and glimpsed at you. "What is it?"
"Lucifer wants me to bring you to the council meeting" you explained.
"Too bad, I wont go" he closed his eyes again. "Why dont you join me?"
"No," you shook your head, "Please, stand up".
He groaned "No, I dont want to go".
Thats it
You grabbed Belphegor by his arms, and turned him on his stomach.
His eyes shot open "Dah! W-what, hey-"
You raised your hand and slapped his ass, the sound of it echoing through the room.
Belphegor jumped and sat up straight, looking at you in disbelief.
"What was that for?!" He blushed
"You should stand up," you crossed your arm over your chest "I asked you nicely but you wont listen".
"Alright..," He closed his eyes "I will go"
You nodded "good"
But before you could turn around, Belphegor grabbed your wrist and laid you over his lap, his hand resting on your butt.
You blushed when you realised what he was doing,
You tried to escape, but his grip on you was too tight.
"Heheh," he chuckled "Time for payback".
"B-belphegor-" you were interrupted by his hand squeezing your left cheek slightly, making you shiver.
Belphegor raised his hand and striked an direct slap on your butt.
He expected you to squeak cutely, but instead a loud moan left your lips.
You quickly sat up and covered your mouth, an massive blush on your face.
Belphegor stared at you with wide eyes,
But after a few seconds he smirked.
"Didnt knew you're into that stuff," he teased you "Im not complaining though".
You just hid your face in his shoulder, too embarassed to look up "Dont tell anyone about this..".
Belphegor chuckled and patted your head "I wont, that would ruin the fun".
He will still tease you about it tho, but just when you guys are alone.

My Personal Simeon Fall AU Headcanons
These are within the same realm of this fic - and it is intended as a Simeon x MC universe! These HCs will focus on his time in the Devildom rather than why he fell, but maybe that information will come eventually...
*some things regarding this war I keep mentioning may not be entirely clear - still working on that! However, I’ll try not to put out too much contradicting information, hehe!
WARNING: some angst, brief mention/implication of torture. forcibly removed memories.
First Days
He came to the devildom in a blaze, much like the brothers did, hurtling down like a shooting star. At the core, encasing him as his wings charred to soot, was a brilliant light blue, rimmed by a dazzling white and platinum gold. At his impact site, parts of the dirt and stone have crystallized in the same colors. The site is still roped off for investigation.
He fell, acting as a white flag for both sides to signal the end of a war very few people knew was raging. The impact sent the last of his holy energy into the surrounding area, and demons near the sight complained of itching and general irritation for weeks after.
The only people at the site who looked into his eyes when he struggled to get up were you, Diavolo, Barbatos, Lucifer, and Solomon. A few curious Devildom citizens were scattered about, too, but Diavolo's authoritative vibe kept them too far to see anything.
Diavolo and Barbtos kept him in one room in the castle as he adjusted to the sudden demonic energy inside him and learned to contain his wrath. You were allowed to see him, but only if supervised by Barbatos or Diavolo in case Simeon tried to hurt you.
He was despondent most of the time, sitting curled up and stiff in the middle of the bed that looked untouched. He spent days without sleep, simmering with rage. You never found out if he bottled it up or if he destroyed the room but Barbatos put it back together before you appeared.
(You might not ever learn that some of the methods Diavolo and Barbatos used to bring his memories back were...extreme. They had no intentions of torture or pain, but they desperately wanted to get to them if they could. That’s where his anger was used up - as he screamed out in agony, either from the extraction method or the feeling of having lost everything yet not quite grasping what that meant.)
Satan suggested books and sent some of his personal collection that helped him gather himself when he was created. Diavolo and Barbatos tried to jog his memories, both for personal reasons and to get information on the Celestial realm, but that was exactly why they were gone. His memories had been magically extracted, but haste made him forget most everything instead of just sensitive information regarding the realm.
Eventually, he was free to roam the garden and some hallways, and when Diavolo and Barbatos concluded that regaining his memories was impossible, he was housed.
Power & Standing
He was a powerful angel, so he is a powerful demon, yet not quite as powerful as the brothers.
Simeon, for the majority of the war, was fighting on the side of the Celestial Realm, so he's generally disliked among the citizens of the Devildom. Our cast are all weary around him for multiple reasons - aside from Satan, Beel, Solomon, and MC (obviously).
He isn't an official member of any student council or governing body, nor does he really have a final say in anything, but he does frequently act as an advisor of sorts. He tends to work with Barbatos on that front, discussing in the background anything that might need discussed or worked on separate from the brothers.
Simeon is a wrath demon, though the change in his temper is hardly noticeable at first. He resembles Lucifer in how strict he is, mostly when he is in charge of something, and his anger that releases when he isn't listened to mimics Satan's.
If they are near each other and angry about the same thing, Satan and Simeon can actually feed off of the other's anger and boost their power. Satan does NOT need the boost, but you bet he brings chaos and destruction tenfold is he has it. For Simeon, though, it practically puts him on par with some of the brothers, if only for a short while.
Socially, he is generally ignored, and nobody runs away from him if he initiates conversation - but he doesn't. Simeon turns into a bit of a loner, a large chunk of his personality and memories gone and replaced with anger.
He's still learning how to deal with it.
His demon form consists of black deer-like antlers (not small but just small enough to avoid being entirely cumbersome) and long wings with bone-tipped feathers. His wings are almost always folded against his back and hanging low, the dangling feathers reminiscent of his angelic cloak with the golden charms. He does have a little black deer tail but doesn't like it being commented on.
(Don't worry about aerodynamics or which animal he represents, it's a magical universe its fine uwu)
General Information
He lives in modest home on the outskirts of the Devildom, somewhat close to the castle in case there's some type of emergency that needs to be taken care of but not so close he gets a super nice house and causes some social uproar. He has a small yard and a garden he tends to meticulously.
I imagine the house as a sort of townhouse (although not a for real townhouse because its it's own thing), two stories tall. The downstairs has a small living room, kitchen and bathroom while the entire upstairs is an open bedroom/office type deal. It gives off a gothic cottage type of vibe. No idea if this is helpful so maybe one day I'll build it in the sims.
He keeps his house tidy but has many bookshelves filled with equal parts books and knickknacks.
As stated before, he is a wrath demon, and because of his memories being almost entirely erased, he had a similar fall and adjustment period as Satan. Also, as a writer, he has an intrinsic appreciation for books. He and Satan get along the most out of all the brothers - the fact that Lucifer has mixed (mostly negative)(?) feelings about Simeon makes the deal sweeter for Satan.
Beel doesn’t dislike him, and while he doesn’t trust Simeon yet he’s willing to see if Simeon is on their side now considering none of his family got hurt. Solomon still trusts him though, but he does get a little downtrodden when he has memories that Simeon doesn’t.
When angry, Simeon smiles sweetly but his voice turns dead cold. Whereas Satan goes feral and seeks destruction like a bomb, Simeon feels more like a sniper rifle that needs careful aim and precision with just as devastating consequences. Shouting and immediate carnage are rare and only come after a severe transgression.
Otherwise, Simeon allows himself to be more playful than before. He doesn’t exactly have snide remarks, but he is an expert at stating the truth in a way that feels like a blade cutting through your confidence.
In true "flaunt what ya got without really making it seem purposeful" Simeon fashion, he wears button-down shirts that are almost entirely unbuttoned. They are always patterned and funky, and he wears them tucked into black pants. I'm thinking something like this (he also has patterns that are more "groovy" than vacation)
Will also occasionally sport a deep v like this
He still acts just as naive and confused if you bring up how exposed he is to him, so its best just to suffer in silence.
When making a pact with MC, he makes sure the mark covers a scar he left and doesn't remember from the war on your shoulder. It feels like a longer-lasting apology.
He still calls you "little lamb," but instead of smiling gently at you like a loving shepherd, his smiles look like a predator baring his fangs at his prey. In a sweet way. In a hot way.
What Does He Remember?
At first, nothing. Demonic instinct claws at him and he lashes out at everyone and everything.
He is still a nightmare with technology. Nobody knows if this is residual from how he was before, a result of his memories being taken, or just a trick.
Occasionally, he’ll remember an inside joke, but only halfway. You’ll say something you don’t realize is from before, and he’ll laugh, almost like an impulse. But then his laugh trails off and he gets contemplative, wondering what, exactly, was so funny about it.
The brightness of the Celestial Realm is hard to forget. The rainbow framing the palace and vast fields appear in dreams. He never remembers anything ‘important,’ but it’s enough to remind him that he was discarded.
The Celestial War hasn’t gone away, not in its entirety. There are certain things like battle strategies that he can’t for the life of him conjure up in his mind, but he remembers the bulk of it. It helps him realize why some of the brothers were/are so aloof towards him - nothing was ever as simple as he thought it once to be. Fighting a losing battle isn’t a choice you make when its for love - its simply the only path available.
(Apologies are so, so hard to dish out when you can’t remember most of your transgressions, though.)
He remembers Luke and will worry himself to inconsolable tears at night just thinking about him. Those thrown away don’t get the privilege of knowing what happens to their friends - and even if he did, Simeon wouldn't be so stupid as to put a target on Luke's back by proving that he was still important to him.
But he can only remember Luke's terrified, teary eyes when he realized Simeon was going to turn on the Celestial Realm in the middle of a war, and how he pleaded with Simeon not to. Luke asked what he would do all by himself, and Simeon hopes to his Father for only one thing - that he figured it out.
This is his sore spot. Nobody is allowed to be privy to these thoughts, not even you. But some days he comes to RAD looking worse for wear and you KNOW something is bothering him. He'll just never tell you what.

I kinda wonder, what could bakugou do (hori write bakugou to do) to make him less popular with the "anti" crowd. Like He was a horrid child no doubt and people who try to put blame on Deku or lessen the terrible shit bakugou did aren't great. But as we don't rly see it, we have to assume bakugous behaviour wasn't stopped, we only ever saw his mum "punishing" him when he was being rude after getting kiddnapped. Nothing will excuse what bakugou did, but he has stopped? He's overall a harsh person but he's not harrassing and bullying people anymore, specifically not deku, he's trying to attone for what he did to deku and has now apologised for it. His behaviour was never viewed as justified or good in the series, he's a scary figure in middle school, we're not meant to like his behaviour, so the series itself hasn't justified his actions.
As someone who relate to both bakugou and deku more than I'd like to admit (never told someone to jump tho, that's fucked lol) so I can 100% understand not liking or even hating bakugou but as someone who's not 15 anymore, looking back I also made a lot of really shitty decisions and like bakugou have tried to make up for it, and like deku I was 'friends' with people who hurt me.
Is there anything he can do for the "antis" to just dislike him rather that be "anti"?
(I'm very sorry if you've talked about this somewhere, you can just tell me to look for it if you have, I'll continue to look for your posts on the subject)
Hey there, anon! I think I’ve spoken about this only tangentially and/or in my main Bakugo meta, which is too big for anyone sane to read. So yeah, let’s chat here!
For me personally—and that’s all I can ever do: speak personally. I think it’s important to keep in mind that there is no single solution to please the “anti” crowd. Each fan will be looking for something slightly different in Bakugo’s character, much of which might contradict what a “stan” is currently enjoying. Given how charged a character he is, I'm not sure it's possible to get the entire fandom to like him—what I’m looking for hinges on having a different reading of the story than you seem to. Meaning, I think the series does justify his behavior. Not in any overt, super obvious way like having all the characters go, “Wow, Bakugo! I sure do love how you threaten people all the time. That’s super cool and heroic!” Things are rarely that straightforward. Rather, it’s in a more subtle, but consistent manner that paints a rather conclusive picture across hundreds of chapters.
Simply put, Bakugo is continually rewarded for his actions. Or, if not outright rewarded, his actions are ignored in a way that implies silent acceptance. Characters may not always like what he does... but they're willing to let it slide because Bakugo's heroism was always treated as a given, not something he had to earn and prove.
With the ever necessary disclaimer that I’m not fully caught up yet, here’s a list of some of the things that stood out to me in the first half of the series:
Bakugo’s bullying made him the most popular kid in school.
Bakugo’s bullying was ignored by/outright supported by the teachers.
Bakugo’s bullying did not hinder him from getting into U.A., one of the most prestigious hero schools around.
Despite acting horribly throughout his time at U.A. too, this behavior was continually ignored by the teachers and other authority figures around him.
Bakugo’s struggle to realize that other people aren’t “trash” doesn’t hurt his achievements in any way. He still gets top scores, still wins the tournament, etc.
Bakugo’s behavior gets him special attention from All Might, the greatest hero and Bakugo’s personal idol.
His behavior doesn’t make others dislike him in any manner that’s taken seriously. Everybody is still willing to not just put up with Bakugo, but—in time—start treating his behavior as a quirk (no pun intended lol) that they’re secretly fond of, rather than something he should legitimately be striving to change. Kirishima is the most overt example of this.
This is compounded by his behavior constantly being framed as humorous. Much like with Mineta’s perverted actions, characters might superficially go, “No, that’s bad!” but the story never demands any significant development because then we’d lose the “joke” of Bakugo screaming in rage at the slightest inconvenience, threatening to murder someone over nothing, constantly belittling everyone around him in a “funny” manner, etc. When fans talk about development of a manga character as archetypal and extreme as Bakugo, most don’t really want to see significant change to his base personality. Because then that would result in someone who doesn’t look like the “real” Bakugo: someone nicer, more even-tempered, more mature, etc. But for those of us who were never drawn to that personality in the first place, the continued acceptance of his rude, egotistical, and violent behavior is discomforting. The easiest comparison I can draw is between this and Bakugo’s mother slapping him. That slap is meant to be another “joke”—we see it constantly in shonen anime, something "humorous" you shouldn’t take too seriously because haha, it's just an overprotective mother—but many fans do take it seriously, using it as the basis for a whole “Bakugo was abused and this explains his behavior” reading. Well, I take the “joke” of Bakugo’s threats and insults seriously, especially in a story that starts with something like telling Izuku to jump off the roof. In the same way that many fans want others to treat Bakugo’s mother as a serious topic that has had a negative influence on his development, I want the series to take Bakugo’s everyday actions seriously as a negative influence on… well, everyone around him. But it doesn’t. His base personality is grudgingly adored.
The above two points are seen most overtly in Izuku, who never wavers in his respect for Bakugo despite how Bakugo treats him. Not just prior to U.A., but during their training too. Izuku, as the protagonist, is the emotional heart of this tale, so when he talks about how inspiring Bakugo is, it encourages the reader to see his behavior as inspiring too. Rather than, as said, something that needs to change. Izuku's continued friendship with Bakugo, his adoration of him, and his acceptance of the way he's treated has severely warped how the entire story sees Bakugo's actions. After all, if #pure Izuku can see the good in Bakugo, why can't everyone else? He must not be that bad after all.
I could get into detailed analyses of all the above—like how Bakugo was the one comforted after attacking Izuku outside the dorms at night and how the messed up relationship he has with Izuku is upheld as something to nurture; how the remedial courses he had to take were made to be rather silly, thereby undermining their supposed importance to his development; how Bakugo’s kidnapping had nothing to do with his flaws, but much of the fandom uses it as a way to dismiss any appropriate consequences because, “Hasn’t he suffered enough?” etc.—but in the interest of keeping this within a readable length, I’ll leave it at that. The point is that Bakugo has always been privileged when it comes to his behavior, resulting in others either outright praising it, ignoring it, or demanding that he change a miniscule bit, which always keeps him far below the standards of both his peers and the expectations of a hero. Everyone in 1-A must learn to be even better than the good people they already are... Bakugo needs to learn that other people aren't dirt at the bottom of his shoes. It's never been a particularly impressive development when pit against the rest of the class. All of which can make something like an apology feel pretty hollow. Yes, he’s apologized and I say with all seriousness that that’s great! But how does that apology stack up against 300+ chapters of content? As Bakugo’s words highlight, he's been a really awful person up "until now": he was consumed by Izuku being “miles ahead of [him],” he “looked down on [him]” because he didn’t have a quirk, he “didn’t want to recognize that,” he “hated that,” “grew distant,” “tried to beat you down,” “opposed you and tried to show my superiority over you,” and ends it all with, “it probably doesn’t mean anything telling you all this” before finally getting to the “I’m sorry.” This is basically a laundry list of how horrible a person Bakugo has been for the entire series, with an acknowledgement that this apology is coming really, really late. This is the moment where I could START to like Bakugo, depending on how he acts form here on out, but that pivotal moment arrived after six years of content and in the final arc of the story. It’s too late. Bakugo needed this kind of self-reflection and positive action 250+ chapters ago so he could (hopefully) grow into a better person across the story, not at the story's end. What we got instead is 322 chapters of him being a really horrible person, but the story going out of its way to excuse or even praise that behavior the majority of the time.
As a quick comparison to end on, I think what Bakugo needed was what Soo Jin got in True Beauty. You don’t need to have seen the drama to follow along. The tl;dr is that she has a lot of the core qualities of Bakugo: an all-consuming drive to win that was created due to abusive parents with high expectations, resulting in her bullying a peer to a pretty horrific extent. The difference between them is how the story frames their actions. When Soo Jin becomes the bully she loses everything. Rather than succeeding academically, her grades plummet, making it clear that this anxiety and self-doubt (things the fandom keeps insisting Bakugo is struggling with, but that rarely ever show up in the text) is actually impacting her day-to-day life. Her best friend drops her because she’s not going to support her choices. The boy she likes rejects her. She’s eventually forced to start over somewhere new - which importantly separates her from the girl she was bullying - and get some distance from her parents, resulting in the growth needed to become a healthier, happier, good person again. So when Soo Jin apologizes to the girl she hurt, it feels earned. The story continually recognized how horrific her actions were and put her into a place where she either had to change, or continue losing at everything else that was important to her. Bakugo? Bakugo doesn’t lose. Oh, he claims he does because he’s comparing himself to Izuku constantly, but that’s just him thinking in extremes. He still wins academically. Still wins many battles. Still wins at having friends. Still wins by maintaining the prestige of being a U.A. student. Still wins by getting All Might’s attention. Still wins by receiving Izuku’s respect and an agreement to maintain this rivalry that Bakugo is so obsessed with. Bakugo comes out well 99% of the time, he just thinks he's "lost" because he can't stand not being the absolute best.
For me, the story needed to have Bakugo face consequences for his behavior, not receive rewards and/or have others ignore it, and that revelation/apology needed to come way, way sooner. For me the issue is not a specific action that Horikoshi can have Bakugo do in the next chapter and them bam, I like him now. The problem is Bakugo’s entire concept, how he’s received by the entire cast, and his run across this entire series. "Entire" is the key word there. Which is why the “But he’s apologized. What more do you antis want?” reactions don’t sit well. What we wanted is a better written redemption arc across those 300+ chapters, not a single scene that’s meant to have us forget all the other problems inherent in the story. At this point it’s a far more complicated situation than, “Bakugo just needs to do X, Y, and Z and then we’re golden.” At the end of the day, Horikoshi failed to make me like him as a person and I’m pretty sure he isn’t going to change Bakugo enough to make him likable to me. Bakugo was never the sort of character I’d be inclined towards without a serious, nuanced redemption arc, but sadly, a core, crucial part of that redemption arc took six years to arrive. At this point there’s no way to change the problems in Bakugo’s writing for that huge chunk of the series and not enough time left in the series, it seems, to do the work we should have seen across the entire run. Honestly, idk if the Bakugo we'll get going forward is someone I can just dislike as opposed to being really uncomfortable with, but my money is on there being too little story left and too much investment in upholding Bakugo's base personality for that to happen. I could absolutely be proven wrong! But I think the problems are structural and needed to be better dealt with from page one, not hastily patched over in the final hour.

The metanarrative’s grand narrative: Osomatsu-san’s characterization throughout the franchise
The growing cynicism throughout the entire Osomatsu-san franchise shows itself in season 3 with more prominence than anything prior. I think that’s pretty common amongst any “long-running” gag comedy - replacing a plot with spiteful commentary that’s admittedly pretty hit or miss at times. However, it invariably creates a negative but pretty funny character growth, and I love the way the show (I’m including the movie too as “canon” material considering season 3 has referenced it way too many times for me to disregard) has set up this metanarrative across seasons. Long post ahead.
Obviously, Osomatsu-san is self-aware and has a casual relationship with itself. No linear plot (though S3 seems to be trying it out and I’ve enjoyed it - I love that they’re willing to experiment), rather a collection of unrelated skits; and so it points out its own metanarrative because of this “lack of consequences.” With comedy comes impermancy and Ososan AND -kun will always bounce back from that week’s insanity. From the Oxford Dictionary, a metanarrative is “a narrative account that experiments with or explores the idea of storytelling, often by drawing attention to its own artificiality.” Basically: a story about stories.
On top of this, is what I’m calling the “grand narrative,” which is often used interchangeably with metanarrative, but here I’m making a distinction to make it less confusing. Of course, Ososan is a story about stories, but with that comes a story it’s not directly telling, which is where most of the (little) character development is taking place. This is what I’m going to call the grand narrative of a show whose premise is being a meta-aware comedy. I’ll admit I’m by no means an expert on these subjects, but storytelling methods are something I enjoy trying to analyze. As a media format, Ososan really utilizes the fact that it’s a tv show.
Right off the bat S1E1 makes it clear what to expect: Nothing. Not a damn thing. But, the show had already been cleared for this first season, so it has to be produced. This same episode’s preview is done by Osomatsu, which I’m just gonna quote instead screenshot because there’s too many.
“...we plan on properly starting the anime the next episode.” “...you ended up with an extra minute, so you need me to do something to fill it?! Actually, is this anime going to be okay with episode one being like this? I’m getting worried about how the rest of this is going to be...” “There, I used up a minute! [EPISODE ENDS]”
Episode one is not only batshit referential, but downright mocking the state of anime in 2015. Which, truthfully, I don’t have much to comment on in that regard, as I’m not an avid anime fan. However, it does this under the premise of being indecisive about what kind of anime they wanted the Osokun reboot to be.
They’ll do just about anything to stay popular and relevant considering that is, quite literally, all they have going for them as characters in the series and just being characters in general. They may be pieces of shit, but they’re likeable pieces of shit. The dynamics they’ve built upon to be entertaining is encouraged, and they’re basically just roleplaying different skits and fucking around.
All the AUs! All the skits! They’re just playing! They’re just fuckin’ around!! They couldn’t come up with any interesting plot nor could they “graduate” from being anime protagonists and join the real world, so they just fuck around and make a gag anime!
Even if we follow both as the audience, the show makes a difference between the what’s them in their “normal life” (crazy begets crazy, no?) and what’s their “show.” But, really, that’s just one way to look at it, as they don’t really follow any rules as a show. I could say the Joshimatsus are separate characters from the sextuplets, and it’d be a “correct” interpretation. It doesn’t really matter - I’m choosing to examine it all as being the six of them just running around and playing, because being entertaining and having fun is all they know as characters. Besides, having it blended together beyond recognition reinforces how it prioritizes entertaining us, the audience, above logic. Storytelling doesn’t need to make absolute spatial-temporal sense for it to be enjoyable to fans.
In any case, that mentality really seems to be what pushes their character development negative, as they look to reinforce habits and rituals despite them being really detrimental for them in the long run. They know they’re popular characters as is, and with really everyone from staff to fans encouraging this behavior further, so they see no point in fixing what isn’t really broken.
I found this 4 year old article from Manga.Tokyo discussing the Ososan phenomenon in Japan because while the craze died off pretty quickly in American anime circles (which deserves a whole other post), Japanese fans went fuckin’ nuts.
This portion caught my attention, as it makes sense that entitled and enabled asshole children would grow up to be entitled and enabled asshole adults. The article also goes on to compare them to idols (even beyond the F6 spoof) and that they are rooted in being comfort characters above all else.
It’s worth a read, especially because Japanese fan response is what drives majority of the content post-S1, and, inevitably, ties into their character development.
They know that they’re Characters, particularly Protagonists. You know what happens to protagonists? Everything works out. Just about every single story created has stuff working out for protagonists. In fact, we have a whole genre made that separates stories with bad tragic endings from our Normal Stories. Ososan is a comedy, not a tragedy, so surely there’s gonna be some payoff somewhere along the road, especially as the seasons and other content are still being pumped out. To a self-aware, entitled, enabled protagonist, assuming everything is just gonna work out for you isn’t that far off from your narrative truth.
However, Ososan is a gag anime, and a lot of gag content (like 4koma mangas) is dropped for other projects before any emotional cathartic ending is provided for characters and fans alike. So, three seasons and a movie later, nothing has happened. It’s a great idol cash cow with a Family Guy filter, and the characters (and writers) don’t even bother to hide it anymore. And I know I’m being hypocritical concerning my definition of “canon material” but I think this portion from one of the drama cds “Choroplex” basically summarizes my point:
CHOROMATSU: Wait, don’t make this into a gag! You don’t even care about becoming employed, right? KARAMATSU: There’s no way that could happen... CHOROMATSU: What kind of future are you imagining? Is it nothing but this? [HUGE PAUSE BEFORE THEY MOVE ONTO SOMETHING ELSE]
They’re parodies of themselves and are running out of ideas. Stagnation and decay is normal, if not unavoidable, at this point in time for them. They’re just 20 somethings who’ve hit a wall but they’re too scared and insecure to bring about permanent positive change. It’s easier for them to fall back into normal patterns and joke off the rest.
They have an antagonistic relationship with expectations. They can’t handle a single iota of expectations, or responsibilities. They’ve never needed to worry before, so why bother now? Once the biggest hits on the block, now they’re just guppies in the ocean, and there’s nothing they believe themselves to be able to accomplish to keep up with this big brave new world. This is epitomized in S3E15, where old man Osomatsu tells a bastardized version of the Tortoise and the Hare, blatantly projecting his feelings onto it. Again, too many screenshots so let me pull more quotes (bolding for my own reference):
“The place that the tortoise thought was the goal was not actually the goal. His journey down the road of life still continued on. The tortoise was quite tired, but he continued running anyway.” “No one actually knew who was in front anymore. There are too many people above you.” “After the tortoise found out how society worked, he thought, ‘So this is the difference in talent? No amount of hard work is going to fix this. All right. I’m done competing with others.’”
S3 has left more questionable endings than its counterparts. The last 2 skits I referenced don’t even a gag to them, and the marriage skit doesn’t play music for the entire second half of S3E5. There’s more involved too. I haven’t even brought up the rice ball twins becoming actual entertainers in their universe, or how they introduced this whole AI subplot only to reject it because All Six Of Them aren’t interested in expanding their little corner of the world. Here’s a transcript of the ending preview from S3E1:
“Hey, hey, Osomatsu here. I thought we were saved from being replaced, but I guess we get new characters next week. Man, we’re busy. New encounters, changing surroundings... We’re NEETs to begin with because all that is a pain. I guess a lot can happen after three seasons. [EPISODE ENDS]”
The sextuplets’ mindsets are extremely self-centered, which is also an environmental thing (the parents don’t even really care that they’re NEETs, for one) and an understanding of what they ought to be (epic successful protagonists). They also have a very black and white mentality, all or nothing. They’re extremely sheltered, and once they realized where they stood in society at large, they just gave up. To them the world is divided between winners and losers, and somehow, “inexplicably,” they found themselves to have fallen from grace. But they’re protagonists, that has to count for something! Everything’s gonna end up okay, right? Well... what this show has told them: No, not at all. They are consistently compared and warned of Iyami, and are perfectly aware of this fact, and have come to internalize it as a truth rather than a reversible self-fulfilling prophecy.
Too many screencaps, taken from the S3S5 marriage discussion:
JYUSHIMATSU: I wonder if we’re gonna get married someday, too. CHOROMATSU: Well, I mean... probably? I’m not exactly sure, but... TODOMATSU: What? You’re gonna get married, Choromatsu-niisan? CHOROMATSU: Huh? Well, yeah... someday.
Surprise! They have commitment issues! The same group that couldn’t commit to a fucking plot! Though their personality issues have several factors involved, I can’t overlook the theater motifs abound. Life’s a stage, and they’re performing entirely unscripted and it shows.
Do I think all of this is 100% intentional on the writers’ part? No, probably not. There’s also an extra layer here regarding contemporary Japanese commentary that I’m not familiar with, so I just ended up focusing on the characters. I can’t be in the writers’ heads, but whatever decisions are being made by executives regarding censorship and “compliance” are reflected in these character changes that result in being significantly more bitter and defeatist.
In the all or nothing, winner-take-all mentality, the only way to save face at this point, in their minds, is to own up to it - act like it’s what they wanted all along. And, hey, it’s funny to watch, right?
“Why is Osomatsu all my examples”, you might be asking. Well, he’s the damn blueprint for it all. The leader of the bunch, the first personality to grab your attention, has had all his issues projected and ricocheted in their echo chamber.
Ultimately, my point here is that you could think their “canon characterizations” (though canon means nothing in a show like this) as being intertwined with the nature of their self-aware existence. They’ve shown you all their tricks, the smoke and mirrors are getting boring, and they’re stalling long enough the story seems to be moving on without them - in spite of them. And when something genuinely threatens their way of life, they don’t know how to respond.
You can play it all straight, of course. Remove the meta jokes and all the same plot points can be hit, but, as a slapstick comedy, it’s able to easily add this additional layer in that I appreciate. I’ve said it in my last post and I’ll probably say it in more, but with comedy comes sincerity - the caveat of all the cartoon violence is that, on some level somewhere, this is how they really feel.
