Bestiary -- Miscellaneous Snakes
As a reminder, all previous entries in this series can be found at https://maniculum.tumblr.com/bestiaryposting .
Another reminder: as mentioned in the initial post, the last six weeks of this project are group posts. Each is a collection of various critters that had particularly short entries, and I figured the best approach was to group them together so people could make art of some / any / all / none of them as they pleased, without feeling obligated to drag inspiration out of like one sentence. (Also doing this allowed me to fit the project into one year -- some of the longer entries in these are the result of me cutting the project down.)
Most of these are from a single "Snake" entry that begins:
The snake is also called coluber, either because it lives in the shadows, colere umbras, or because it wriggles along in a slippery way, in sinuous coils. For anything that slithers when you hold it, like a fish or a snake, is called lubricus, ‘slippery'. The snake gets its name, serpens, because it creeps up under cover, not by visible steps, but crawling along by the tiniest movements of its scales. Creatures which go on four feet, like lizards and newts are called not snakes but reptiles. Snakes are reptiles too, because they crawl, reptare, on their chests and bellies. There are as many poisonous snakes as there are species; as many which bring death or suffering, as there are colours among them.
Mlegtugwam
The Mlegtugwam is so called because it injects poisons with its bite, spreading them throughout the body. It moves quickly with its mouth always open and emitting vapour. There are various kinds and species of Mlegtugwams which inflict harm with different effects. It is said that when the Mlegtugwam begins to endure a snake-charmer summoning it with music designed for that purpose, to bring it out of its cave, and it does not want to come out, it presses one ear to the ground, and blocks and covers the other with its tail, and deaf to those magic sounds, does not go out to the man who is charming him.
Girtranaeg
The snake called Girtranaeg gets its name because it glitters with such a variety of colour on its back that it slows down those who look at it on account of its markings. And because it is not a keen crawler and cannot overtake the prey it pursues, it catches those who are stunned by the marvel of its appearance. It gets so hot that even in winter it casts off its burning skin, something to Lucan refers: ‘The Girtranaeg alone can shed its skin while the rime is still scattered over the ground'
Hrukgolklo
The Hrukgolklo is so called because it has two heads, one where its head should be, the other on its tail; it moves quickly in the direction of either of its head, with its body forming a circle. Alone among snakes it faces the cold and is the first to come out of hibernation. Its eyes glow like lamps.
Thagolgrom
The Thagolgrom is a kind of asp, called [redacted] in Latin, because those it bites die of thirst.
Shabalrang
There is a kind of asp called Shabalrang, because it kills you by sending you to sleep.
Tafmiwukri
The Tafmiwukri is an asp, so called because it kills by making you sweat blood. If you are bitten by it, you grow weak, so that your veins open and your life is drawn forth in your blood.
Krefemklog
The Krefemklog is an asp that moves quickly with its mouth always open and emitting vapour, as the poet recalled like this: ‘The greedy Krefemklog that opens wide its foaming mouth' (Lucan, Pharsalia, 9, 722). If it strikes you, you swell up and die of gross distention, for the swollen body putrefies immediately after.
Kraehozdim
The Kraehozdim is a snake found in Italy; it is of a vast weight; it follows flocks of cattle and of gazelles, fastens on their udders when they are full of milk and sucking on these, kills the animals; from its ravaging of oxen, it has got its name [redacted].
Nrogklongo
The Nrogklongo is an asp which, when it bites a man, destroys him, so that he turns entirely into fluid in the snake's mouth.
Samgleshti
The Samgleshti is so called because it has horns on its head like a ram's. [Etymology redacted.] It has a set of four small horns and, displaying them, it persuades animals that they are good to eat, then kills its prey; for it covers its entire body with sand, so that no trace of it shows, except the part with which it catches the birds or animals it has attracted. It bends more than other snakes, so that it seems to have no spine.
Zriggwanto
The Zriggwanto is a flying serpent, mentioned by Lucan. For they spring into trees and when anything comes their way, throw themselves on it and kill it. As a result, they are called ‘javelin-snakes'.
Kramlengga
In Arabia there are white snakes, with wings, called Kramlenggas, which cover the ground faster than horses, but are also said to fly. Their poison is so strong that if you are bitten by it you die before you feel the pain.
Galwinglik
The Galwinglik is a small snake which consumes with its poison not just the body but the bones. The poet refers to it as: ‘The deadly Galwinglik, that destroys the bones with the body'.
Yeakrindra
The Yeakrindra is a snake which is said to be so small that you tread on it without seeing it. Its poison kills you before you feel it, with the result that the face of anyone dying in this way shows no sadness from the anticipation of death.
Remember to tag posts with either the names of the critters you picked from the group and/or simply "maniculum miscellaneoussnakes" so folks can find them.

A Menagerie of Miscelaneous Snakes
My response to this week’s BestiaryPosting challenge, from @maniculum
Pencil sketch, then lines in TWSBI Eco fountain pen, extra fine nib, using Monteverde Raven Noir ink. Another mass grouping where I tried to include every one (the names are mostly on there so I could keep track!); I feel like doing the pencil sketch first helped a bit with the detail, but loses a little something compared to the spontaneity of the miscellaneous birds...
A little detail below the cut;
Snake
The snake is also called coluber, either because it lives in the shadows, colere umbras, or because it wriggles along in a slippery way, in sinuous coils. For anything that slithers when you hold it, like a fish or a snake, is called lubricus, ‘slippery’.
Sinuous, coiled, hiding in shadow. This was the one I did first, and still one of the ones I'm most pleased with.
Hopefully this one is obvious from the description of the behaviour, kinda cute :)
Girtranaeg
The snake called Girtranaeg gets its name because it glitters with such a variety of colour on its back that it slows down those who look at it on account of its markings. And because it is not a keen crawler and cannot overtake the prey it pursues, it catches those who are stunned by the marvel of its appearance. It gets so hot that even in winter it casts off its burning skin, something to Lucan refers: ‘The Girtranaeg alone can shed its skin while the rime is still scattered over the ground’
This was probably the one I spent most time on. Hopefully its obvious that we're in a melted patch of snow, and we have the shed skin by the side.
Hrukgolklo
The Hrukgolklo is so called because it has two heads, one where its head should be, the other on its tail; it moves quickly in the direction of either of its head, with its body forming a circle. Alone among snakes it faces the cold and is the first to come out of hibernation. Its eyes glow like lamps.
Big, glowing eyes, and a tail with markings that make it look like another head. This one confused me a bit, in terms of how it moved; I ended up assuming that it bites its tail (whether intentionally or not) then rolls along like a hoop snake...
Thagolgrom
The Thagolgrom is a kind of asp, called [redacted] in Latin, because those it bites die of thirst.
This snake is sitting in a mazer, a kind of wooden drinking vessel used in middle and late medieval Northern Europe. We also have a slighly wave-like pattern on its scales, to represent water.
Shabalrang
There is a kind of asp called Shabalrang, because it kills you by sending you to sleep.
Needed some way of representing sleep, so we have a snake whose scale markings appear like the phases of the moon.
Tafmiwukri
The Tafmiwukri is an asp, so called because it kills by making you sweat blood. If you are bitten by it, you grow weak, so that your veins open and your life is drawn forth in your blood.
Another snake with symbolism in its scales, a big obvious blood drop on its head, and smaller ones along its flanks.
Krefemklog
The Krefemklog is an asp that moves quickly with its mouth always open and emitting vapour, as the poet recalled like this: ‘The greedy Krefemklog that opens wide its foaming mouth’ (Lucan, Pharsalia, 9, 722). If it strikes you, you swell up and die of gross distention, for the swollen body putrefies immediately after.
This originally started as a Mlegtugwam, above, but I emphasised the foaming mouth alongside the vapours. This was based largely on a boa with its mouth open - snake mouths are very interesting anatomically!
Kraehozdim
The Kraehozdim is a snake found in Italy; it is of a vast weight; it follows flocks of cattle and of gazelles, fastens on their udders when they are full of milk and sucking on these, kills the animals; from its ravaging of oxen, it has got its name [redacted].
Simply a large snake with behaviour based on the description. The startled cow was based on a medieval illustration, but heavily simplified.
Nrogklongo
The Nrogklongo is an asp which, when it bites a man, destroys him, so that he turns entirely into fluid in the snake’s mouth.
Looks like this man has already turned to fluid due to this asp's venom... Drink up!
Samgleshti
The Samgleshti is so called because it has horns on its head like a ram’s.
I probably should have focused on the behaviour too here, but we have a snake with four horns in a sandy environment, extra wiggly!
Zriggwanto
The Zriggwanto is a flying serpent, mentioned by Lucan. For they spring into trees and when anything comes their way, throw themselves on it and kill it. As a result, they are called ‘javelin-snakes’.
I interpreted flying in this case as 'hurtling through the air from a high place', rather than actually having the power of flight.
Kramlengga
In Arabia there are white snakes, with wings, called Kramlenggas, which cover the ground faster than horses, but are also said to fly. Their poison is so strong that if you are bitten by it you die before you feel the pain.
This one on the other hand is an actual flying - or at least gliding - snake. I figured it you extend the hood of a cobra along its whole body (and make it a fair bit wider) it would have a pretty good chance of catching a breeze.
Galwinglik
The Galwinglik is a small snake which consumes with its poison not just the body but the bones. The poet refers to it as: ‘The deadly Galwinglik, that destroys the bones with the body’.
I figured it it eats bones, it should be quite a chunky snake; think an egg-eating snake, but with the power to crush the (small) bones of its prey after eating them, rather than before.
Yeakrindra
The Yeakrindra is a snake which is said to be so small that you tread on it without seeing it. Its poison kills you before you feel it, with the result that the face of anyone dying in this way shows no sadness from the anticipation of death.
Teeny tiny snek! 🐍

Penrose Album of the Day, Day 37: open this wall by berlioz
Surprise! I bet you were expecting a single song. Strap in though, I went a little crazy here. God this album came out literally a week ago and I am head over heels in love with it. Have you ever had love at first sight with something but with your ears? I have.
There’s times when songs or albums or artists or what have you grab me by the lapels and say “I AM SPEAKING DIRECTLY TO YOU. OPEN YOUR HEART WHILE I POUR THE WORLD INSIDE” and I am stuck standing, grinning like a fool with my open socket heart. I think the first time I was aware it was happening was at a concert. I was going to go see Reptar, a band the guy I was dating at the time really liked. The opener was this band I had also never heard of, Young Empires (I had barely heard of Reptar, to be honest. That said they’re not bad, Ice Black Sand is a good listen if you’re interested). The band started to warm up, they looked like nothing special, and well, then they started playing.
I was probably one of the tallest people at the venue of maybe 50-100 people, which was notable but not that weird. Sometimes being 6’1” makes you stand out. Or maybe I’m mythologizing the moment in my head; people tend to do that. Maybe I only remember the bits that matter to me. What matters though, and this is true- what matters is I was taller by about a head than every person in front of me, and I was 5-6 people deep in the crowd. So I had a full, clear view of the stage, and of Matthew Vlahovich (The lead singer). So when the song Sunshine came on, and I slowly realized that I was about to be carried away by this song, and be this band’s fan for life, Matthew watched the creeping realization and delirious, wild smile crawling over my face, the love blooming like a tender beansprout in my heart. And he pointed at me and smiled, still singing the song. I was hooked for the entire set.
I never remember it’s a Reptar concert, by the way. I couldn’t tell you a single song they played. But I won’t forget Young Empires.
I love when the message makes it perfectly to me. I love when I see the vision. I hear the secret. I can’t express what makes a song do this for me either. By all accounts I can’t even tell what gives a song that quality. What’s the rhyme, what’s the reason. There are songs I truly, absolutely love that did not strike me in that fashion. But there are other songs, or whole albums, where this happened. Sunshine by Young Empires. Smoke by Victoria Monet. And now ascension by berlioz grabbed me and never let go.
After I listened to this album in full, I went on a dive and the first thing I saw berlioz’s spotify profile. “If Matisse made house music”. Fuck that’s so pretentious. So. X meets Y. It’s essential, in a way. A great, pithy one liner to describe your music. But like. That’s so arrogant!!! That’s like calling yourself the Da Vinci of music. Like saying not only am I the best at what I do, but I’m directly comparable to not just someone equally as skilled in another medium. But long lasting and prolific. Matisse is a household name for an art style people couldn’t pick out of a lineup some days. And don’t get me wrong, some days I’m people. Matisse. Christ.
I literally can’t disagree though, is the best part. How shocking to be prepared for bad taste, only to find an apt comparison. Even the cover art is very The Cutouts meets Blue Algal meets Madame Matisse in a Kimono meets who gives a rats ass what I think. What do you think. What does this album art make you feel. Do you like it? Is the white background with the vibrant colors reminiscent of something for you? Did you mistake it for a work of art? Was that a mistake? Isn’t it beautiful? How lucky.
I sound like an art teacher. I should be embarrassed but I’m just enthralled. I sound pretentious. Like this means something. And it does, but I don’t talk this way about everything. I don’t talk this way about things that I even feel more strongly about or find more important. Maybe I’ve gotten old, or joy is infectious, or I just like writing words in any order. Maybe everyone else knows the secret that music should enthuse. I don’t know. I just know this album makes me feel like it’s a balmy summer night, which is lucky, because it is. And I want to tell everyone.
Berlioz wants that too- his first EP was titled jazz is for ordinary people. There’s this sentence my roommate used and I’ve never really forgotten it. “People wear jewelry to tell you something”. And well. Artists name tracks to tell you something to. They reference to tell you something. They choose album art. To tell you something. The medium? It’s calling you, and the metadata berlioz has included in his work smacks you over and over again- this music is not special, or for smart people, for the erudite or the well read or the people who can use the big fancy music words. This music was for you. For me. It’s for us to enjoy. Period.
Matisse made art like a good comfy armchair, and berlioz makes art like the music playing in the coffee shop with that armchair in it. So the comparison isn’t a bad one, OK. That’s not to say I think berlioz is Matisse levels of good. I’m saying he has an understanding of narrative. Of evocation. I’m saying he might be a wizard, perhaps. (I guess I AM saying berlioz might be Matisse levels of good, but a good debut is simply that, right?). Matisse is even sampled on one of his works- la danse, from 2022. He gave a radio interview and berlioz just. Sampled his inspiration.
There’s a Rolling Stone Interview where he’s talking about his sample work actually and I do love what he says- he’s talking about the Nancy Wilson sample from open this wall (the namesake track), and what he says about spontaneity and how sampling can be more evocative due to its nature, like. The fact that any sample is not intended for use in the song it’s being used in, so it’s earnest and somehow, despite being recorded many moons ago, fresh and spontaneous. A thought fully formed springing from the head, like Athena. I think jazz, house, and black classical (ode to rashaan was very clear ok) all lend themselves to this dreamy, illustrative, almost building block-esque feel that a lot of Matisse’s art gives me. Dance (I) but given auditory form. Where you can take pieces and fit them together and have something that’s more than the sum of its parts.
Open This Wall is 34 minutes long. 34 minutes! She is baby. She is tiny. I want to hold her, this newborn babe, carried into this world so gently, with such promise. I don’t think anything really taught me about potential as much as this tiny musical blip. This short, infinitesimal series of soundwaves. This cosmic ant of an album, engulfed by the world and not even trying to hide it. 34 minutes isn’t just enough. It’s perfect. Ascension grabs you with some truly smooth saxophone (I hope most ardently that it’s Attlee himself playing it) and just the most quietly groovable house track you’ve ever rolled molly to. And 30 minutes later you’re free. But changed.
This music simultaneously is music I think I could dance with someone to. Music I could make dinner to. Music I could read to. Music I could fall asleep to. This is music, most importantly, I would wholeheartedly recommend to you if you are excited to try something new. Dip your toe into some house music, or some jazz.
If 34 minutes is too much of your time, my 4 personal favorite songs are ascension, open this wall, something will happen, and nymtp.
You could, however, use this as an excellent jumping off point for some other music. My favorite thing about music like this is that. The samples are a way deeper. You can listen to Nancy Wilson. See what drew berlioz to her in the first place. On ode to rashaan, you hear a sample extolling black classical music, and the song is written about Rashaan Roland Kirk. Do you want to dig deeper, to find the connections? I’ll let you look up the sample. A good puzzle for those who care.
I genuinely, wholeheartedly loved this album. And hey. You could be dead right now. Go listen to something you love. I know I am.

rewatched The Rugrats Movie recently after making that poll
1. it Really holds up, the art style is so appealing!
2. god it's somehow darker and more adult than I remembered. but not adult as meant in the typical way, more in that there are a lot of extended scenes of dialogue that's just candid chatter between the grown characters, and jokes that I would not have even begun to understand as a kid. "excuse me, bro, my tax deductions are crying"
3. how did they convince all those big musicians to collaborate on a music sequence where they're playing a bunch of newborns that ends with them peeing together
4. lmao they say "asshole" in that reptar wagon song

Rugrats in Paris: The Movie (Nintendo 64)
First time?: No
This was a game I've had since childhood and have played many times, but I've never actually beaten it, until now. How would I describe the experience? Well, The Ramones put it best: My brain is hanging upside-down. (I don't really know what I mean by that, it just sounded appropriate)
For the uninitiated, Rugrats in Paris for the N64/PS1 is basically a mini-game collection. The mini-games are spread out over five different hub worlds (Main Entrance, Golf Park, Princess Castle, Reptar Island, and Ooey-Gooey World), and the objective is to play the mini-games to earn Gold Tickets. Once you have enough Gold Tickets, you can buy the Reptar Helmet, which lets you control Robo-Reptar for the final battle against Robo-Snail.
Oh, also, the overworld uses tank controls. For some reason.
The mini-games range from "not bad" to "why am I still playing this", my least-favorite among them being any of the various "throw stuff at a target" mini-games. My favorites are the jigsaw puzzles, mini-golf, and mayyyybe Chuckie Chan (only because that one is so easy).
So you can tell by my tone that I don't think this game is particularly fun. So why do I keep coming back to it?
Frankly, I just think the hub worlds are neat. Each of the five hubs feels like an amusement park, complete with little restaurants with patios and flies buzzing around the trash cans.
They also each have a distinct flavor to them: Main Entrance has a central shopping area vibe to it, Golf Park is all golf-themed (and also has a cool Employees Only section to explore), Princess Castle is all themed around Chinese iconography, Reptar Island has a tropical island/volcano theme, and Ooey-Gooey world is... ooey and gooey!
Speaking of Ooey-Gooey World, the music in this area is so weirdly calming and mysterious, I love it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMr6SIX9G9o
So in conclusion, the game isn't amazing, but it has strangely captivating vibes that keep me coming back more than it should.

15 questions to get to know me!
thanks for the tag, @skyshipper!
1. are you named after anyone?
I am not. My mom even spelled my name differently than it usually is because after a bunch of hours of back labor she didn’t care what my name was or how it was spelled. (I was supposed to be a Jessica, but my grandma said absolutely not.)
2. when was the last time you cried?
A couple days ago thanks to my Timehop. The end of March and first couple weeks of April are always really painful to relive.
3. do you have kids?
I do not and I never will and I’m sick of people trying to convince me that the only way to feel fulfilled and truly happy with my life is to have kids. I’m perfectly happy and content to be able to wake up in the morning and decide to take a spontaneous trip, or make a purchase just because I want to or do what I want and need to do with my free time.
4. do you use sarcasm a lot?
If something sarcastic doesn’t come out of my mouth regularly, you know something’s wrong.
5. what’s the first thing you notice about people?
Physically? Their eyes. But the first thing I look for is how they treat the people they come into contact with.
6. what’s your eye colour?
Blue, but it’s sort of tinged with gray?
7. scary movies or happy endings?
I’ve never seen a truly scary movie, but I’m always on the hunt for a good one.
I like happy endings, but they have to be realistic. (Hallmark movies don’t count because those bitches are always the most unrealistic BS and yet I can’t stop watching them.)
8. any special talents?
I have an insane amount of useless and trivial pop culture knowledge in my head. I am INCREDIBLE with word puzzles, and am really good at things like Family Feud and Jeopardy.
I’m also a more than decent cook.
9. where were you born?
About 10 minutes from where I currently live in Ohio. I’ve lived in the same state for all 35+ years of my life.
10: what are your hobbies?
Cooking. Reading. Writing. Traveling. Seeing live concerts. Gardening (It’s almost tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiime)
11. have you any pets?
Technically, I have three cats, but only one lives with me. Beckett is a cat I got in 2006 while in college that my dad “stole” from me when I took her home for Christmas break one year. She’s lived at his house since late 2008. Reptar is a cat that Chris and I adopted at the end of 2010 (about a month and a half after we got Neptune) that also lives at my dad’s house with Beckett. He went to live there after my childhood dog died, and Beckett needed a friend. Reptar’s really skittish, and they had a larger house with more places for him to hide/be comfortable with.
And then there’s the Perfect Little Prince, my Tiny Baby Turdle, Sir Neptunington the First, His Royal Highness and my little honeybee .... Neptune.
I’ve had him since July 2010, we found him on Craigslist, and the person that listed him said he was a Ragdoll/Siamese mix.
He is not. He’s half Maine Coon, half Siamese and he’s more like a dog than any other cat I’ve ever met and he is huge and he is PERFECT.
12: what sports do you play/have you played?
I’m the least athletic person you could possibly imagine. I hate the idea of participating in organized team sports, but I love swimming, and I’ve skied since I was 11 or 12, so for about 24 years.
13: how tall are you?
5′6″
14. favourite subject in school?
English. I also really liked the journalism courses that I took. I hate math, and was not a big fan of my science and biology courses, either.
15. dream job?
I currently get paid for writing, so that’s great, but it would be really cool to actually get to write things that I want to be writing for $$. I would love to work in the continuity department for some sort of production company, because details are very important and they’re often overlooked.
Another ideal job, though? Music or food journalist. Someone should pay me to follow tours around and try new kinds of food and drinks. (Reader’s job in Locked Down is directly influenced by something that I’d enjoy doing. The freedom of getting paid to travel and have a good time would be incredible)

On Your Marks, Get Set, Ready, Go! - Busta Rythmes
"Ha! made it dramatic Plus I'm not really had it with situations like these I better make it a habit I am reptar the perfect children's toy! For every girl every boy I know they overly joyed So fast I hear the wind whistling Faster than a missile then Ha is you listening? No! In a minute we'll be soon to be arriving Strive to put an end to all this reckless driving I don't mean to bore you but I am reptar and I will destroy you"!
This song is my peak childhood song cuz it comes from one of my favorite movies of all time since it's the one for The Rugrats, my favorite NickToon of all time!
Plus Busta Rythmes did a surprisingly amazing job with the flow and lyrics of this song, esp this verse (it's one of the biggest reasons why I like him and his music currently) and voicing the Reptar Wagon itself!
Thank you soso much for sending this in, it was a lotta fun!
Hope you have a wonderful day friend!!

1, 2?
Unironically I knew you would ask me the two best questions on this whole damn list, thank you Izzy for being the GOAT.
Song of the year? God what songs even came out this year. I don't think this year was a year where new music happened for me. (One of the biggest hits this year was... Fast Car. Do you remember that??? What???) I'm a little tempted to say Fast Car, but that's cheating on Ms. Tracy Chapman, who is unimpeachably the best version of the song (And wouldn't it kind of suck if the song of the year was just. An inarguably well done but ultimately less meaningful rendition of a song from like 45 years ago) If I can pick songs that I encountered this year but didn't come out this year, I could go on for a while. Lonely by Jamila Woods, All My Girls Like To Fight by Hope Tala, Get Down by Woozy. I think Van Gogh by Mette is great but not the song of the year for me, certainly. Rush by Troye Sivvy? It's more honest but doesn't feel right to me totally. Is It New Years Yet has new toy syndrome, AND it's a holiday song, AND it's a Sabrina Carpenter song that complains about overplayed music. Like. Self aware much? And also means it can kick rocks because that is NOT song of the year material. But I like music with a groovy influence, I'm a little corny, and I can't lie about this kinda thing. I categorically refuse to put Build a Boat on my top anything list, regardless of Spotify telling lies about my listening habits. (This is me lying about this kinda thing). I don't want to repeat a year in review song, either, which kinda makes this harder. I guess I gotta give it to You Wish by Flyana Boss, because it's the only song that's not 1. on my year end list, or 2. a song that had a reservation/caveat/well, actually attached to it.
Album of the year? My two top albums of this year were Something To Give Each Other and Jaguar II, but I have to give it up to Victoria Monet honestly- I didn't take to a piece of music this fast since when I saw Young Empires open for Reptar and fell in love on the first song of the set. I listened to Smoke and I was hooked- maybe it's the drug culture references but joyful and openly honest, maybe it's the slick production and variety on the album, maybe it's that it's not afraid to be goofy as hell ("I'm so deep in my bag, like a grandma with a peppermint" is quite possibly an all timer goofy lyric that still hits the right timber for the braggadocio it's placed as in the song, "It's a bisexual blunt it can go both ways" is just. so fuckin stupid, I love it.), maybe it's the features (Lucky Daye? EARTH WIND AND FIRE???), maybe it's the touch of old hollywood glamour at the end and the clear love of motown sensibilities juxtaposed with her talking about her 4K titties. I don't know man, it just rewired my brain but in a good way. More than that, Victoria made me cognizant of her in the stuff I already liked. Like. She has writing credits/backing vocal credits for Ariana Grande. I CAN HEAR HER IN THE SONGS SHE HELPED WRITE. She's goofy and sexy and has some fun production preferences, and I can hear her sometimes now even when she's composing/producing for other artist. I haven't been able to peg a pop writer this hard since good ol' jackie, and that's because he's everywhere and also in like 3 solo projects and also Taylor Swift's silver bullet. But like I can directly point to how much she worked on Thank You Next and the all time greatest Ariana album, Dangerous Woman. She helped write Body Count, Sin City, On The Way... all songs I liked by other artists, but didn't realize who, you know, helped make. This is not to say I didn't love Troye Sivan this year- and both these artists made my year end retrospective. I really dig Troye's album (Though I run into the issue I have with a lot of albums where I like but don't love the second half of it, which is why Victoria took the W.). Give the songs In My Room or What's The Time Where You Are a listen for sure. It's just. so hard to find an album you unironically vibed with. Unashamedly and openly. I honestly don't care if anyone else likes this album, because I loved it. I'll stream it enough for all of us, a bitch might buy it on vinyl Anyways sorry for running on so long, it's Jaguar II by Victoria Monet, because if we have to say Goodbye, let's make it a Good Bye is something I want to live by now that I've heard it.
