Did my best to recreate the look of her eyes by zooming into her official art! (used lipstick again for the red) Threw in a bit of orange-brown to blend it out because it looks like her hair/fur, but idk if you can really tell. Working on my eyeliner skills :)

At work today I was thinking about The Owl House finally so uhm spoilers below the cut. Also sorry for bad spelling and grammar I'm on mobile.

One thing that I love is that each character that stomps on Belos represents his crimes.

Raine

Raine represents Belos's manipulation of the Isles.

Raine was told by Eda the coven system was awful but they still chose to join. They then realized that she was right and decided to bring it down from the inside.

They represent the manipulation the rest of the Isles fell for to get the coven system to work, to walk to their own demise on the Day of Unity.

Eda

She represents the most of Belos's crimes (primarily cause she is a mirror of him). Those crimes are genocide and fratracide.

Eda is one of the most powerful wild witches in the Owl House and the only one that has so much screen time. Belos spends most of the show trying to get wild witches to join a coven or be killed (just like what happened to Native Americans). In fact she was very much a victum of that as she was hunted down and nearly killed for being a wild witch.

If the theory that Evelyn was a Clawthorne is true then she would also represent fracticized. After all, Eda's family doesn't seem to know that they decended from a human and the kid that Evelyn and Caleb would grow up never getting to know their father. There is also the fact that Belos has done numerous things to endanger and harm Eda and Lilith who would be his brother's decendents.

King

King's was a little trickier but I would say he represents the lies and distortion.

Belos clearly shows that Belos has been lying to the entire Isles. He is the last Titan they know that Belos never talked to the Titan. It also is fitting that the boiling rain be sent by King's dad which can be seen as representig the truths that Belos had hidden.

King also shows that Belos has distorted the Titan and the gifts that the Titan had given them. Belos uses the glyphs tto try and end the Isles and use them for his own selfish gains.

Luz (I want to include Luz's role because I think that it is so well written)

Luz is the only character that is there that doesn't stomp on Belos which makes sense nerratively (also characterly but I'm not talking about that).

Luz represents light the first glyph she learns is the light glyph and when she dies she becomes light. She also has the ability to see the light in people even when others can't.

As Luz watches the boiling rain fall on Belos she watches all the light that Belos projected be destroyed.

Luz is also someone who offers second chances. Each of her friends and found family are given second chances either directly or inderectly due to Luz's actions. She also had given Belos numerious second chances all of which he never took.

Luz stepping away from Belos as he begged her for another chance showed that she was no longer going to give him second chances. That he has run out of chances to change his way. It also shows that she wasn't going to sheild him from his own consequences

I am going to disagree with a few points, and agree wifh others, just comming in here with peace and lovefor discussion about these characters :D i think it's fun, sorry it's so long but i have a little spare time for discussion

I absolutely agree that Team Fortress 2, the game, is satire of the cold war and human conflict, we have communists, american patriots,spies and other hired murederers, in a deserty wasteland with radioactive cows and undercover secret agencies. In fact the very map of 2forf tells a very different story from the comics, it's not a silly grave war, it's an undercover war for secret world domination, therefore all the rockets and big evil villain tech for mass destruction.

However tf2 characters from the game and the comics and in promotional material, couldn't be more different, I'm sorry but heavy in the game sounds stupid, acs both menacing and goofy and it's a simple character with simple gameplay, while in the comic he has this dark and complicated backstory and is for the most part very stoic except maybe when he is fighting, but it's not the same, it's not like spy that he has mlre educated and gentlemanly lines in the game, heavy doesn't get smart remarks, AT ALL.

This is just an example because while i do like so stuff from the comics they do flanderize characters A LOT, rip mentally ill patriotic borderline racist soldier, you were good son, real good. Or sniper being from new zealand, that one i did not like.

But saying miss pauling does not have at least an insteresting personality is a lie, she is just as crazy as a the mercs, the unfortunste part is that you can easily avoid this personality by never engaging in missions in the game, which most people do anyways me included but the voicelines are on youtube. You never realize she is just that much into working and violence she is a bit of a masoquist for work and likes what the other mercenaries do for a job as well.

I do heavily disagree with scout being a bad agent and a harraser, most of these men are specifically dicks amongst themselves with a few exceptions, but at least with jay and eriks interpretation, he is still an annoying idiot, but he does respect miss pauling and tries to respect her boundaries, and in game there is no mention of scout chasing her, only that he won't shut the fuck up. Like these men have women in their lives and don't stoop to their usual level interacting with them, they do have standards and moms.

This interpretation of scout with erik and wol has been consistant in this regard, he is an idiot with a heart of gold, he does mean well and is just putting a brave face and makes a lot of noise to hide his insecurities.

I will agree that the comics don't nearly do any characters justice and the fact that the game started with almost no story and went along as time is BLATANT. Also you have to take into account, Moby francke while not a writter... well the art director of the game was telling a very different story from the start based on whatever direction they were going during game development, which he had a huge impact off, he was the one to make the game look and feel how it is.

Then you have Chet Flaliszet the writter of the game, he's responsible for some of the most memorable lines in gaiming. But that's not to say that Erik Wolpaw and Jay Pinkerton the writters of the comics didn't contribute interesting things, they of course made the famous and succesfuk shorts representig characters as close as they are during the game.

I think these many storytellers and going as they come up with ideas shows during expiration date, soldier is distinctevily stupider, most characters have nothing to add but a few lines or grunts, and you have that anomalous miss pauling, nkw we have another anomaly, we have an extra writter, and that's miss pauling voice actor themselves.

I am unsure how much they contributed to the scrip and to their own character, but aparently based on some youtube comments they used to be a scout fan, so idk how much that went into trying to make a cute romance, which yeah is cliche but there's nothing wrong with cliche as long as all parties are reciprocrating and concenting.

Now the issue i have is that they throw this idea away, a promise that was watched 41 million times, and a lot of people don't play or follow tf2 content anymore so that's a lot of people who watched a promise and just left with the idea of a future something between those two. Doesn't help that the steamlink comercial while technically not cannon those two sit around playing games and scout does put a hand on miss pauling which she doesn't reject. A very clear miscomunication of aparently always has been a lesbian miss flo pauling.

I actually went back to see people's reaction to that bit of information and by god did it not matter at all in the end, it used to exist in a tweet that is now but errased where it's stated that she is a lesbian and some "leaks " of the end of the comic where she was dating the admin and everyone was going to die.

But yeah people thought jay pinkerton was making fun of jk rowling for gay dumbledore on both reddit and on tumblr e.e great job guys.... also it's subtle but it is still there, but if you are dense or not very good at noticing patterns, she is never to come across that way... trust me there is dense people out there regardless of orientation.

Personally I wouln't have minded if she ended with scout or was with the administrator all along, but in away she got out of both ideas if you don't like romances and like fully independant people, i am more i tne middle of, one it would have been cute but clearly wrote as they went out of their asses and would have been neat if she was that way all along and not just a secret you had to tell on twitter >:C

One of the issues with the comic, is that it spends more time with other side charcaters and subplots that don't help our main 10 characters shine outside a few, and their story arcs come out of nowhere, like in the game snipers whole stick is that he is a camper and is in conflict with spy because of definitions of proffesionalism, it's an ongoing rivalry, in the comic he aparently always had a crisis with his identity, we had to be told, we never get to see him grapple with it before, because most of the time his nationality (unlike black scottish ciclops) isn't in question but how he does his fucking job, which most mercenaries hate that he doesn't do direct combat, like most of us players resent him.

Also man demoman, got done superdirty, dude has alcoholism due to trauma and abandonment, made into the comic reliefs, dude prolly can lead his own show and is not allowed to! >:C

I am not giving that much shit to the writters, it's difficult tell a story with more than 9 characters without it turning into and grr martin wide book saga, i am being hylerbolic of course. Clearly valve didn't care to end tf2 properly and has it in life support, but doesn't mean we didn't deserved more consistancy and care. There is a similar discussion but directed towards art direction since fans ane doing most of the work.

As to romance and other representation... look we've had the medic and heavy give each other looks, if they wanted representation that was there the whole time ~~this is a dumb joke not being serious but something must count if even the voice actors ship them LMAO~~

Hullo, I wanted to ask you something about your Tf2 analysis from a while ago (which I really really appreciate and think about often with a more than recommended amount of skepticism to accompany my enthusiasm, I'm not going to go debate lord on you though) and I'm not too sure how to go about it or if I should. I'm nervous. Nonetheless:

You've outlined the improvident way that it was revealed that Spy is Scout's absent-yet-presently-present father and why that was a such a folly in the initial discretion of the game, as well as how that could have been executed differently while maintaining and potentially expanding it's comedic satire that it is dependent on. My question is: Do you think that, with the same retconish way that occured with Scout and Miss Pauling, there could have been a way for them to avoid the foiling trope without taking away from their own premises, too?

If it helps I'm completely neutral on it as a ship and am not pushing for some shippy debate thing, from skimming over your blog I've superficially gathered some critique on gender politics, correct me if I'm wrong but mostly as it pertains to heteronormative, patriarchal, generally inflexible presentation in media. So I'm really curious on how that could be applied here! Sorry for this strange, lengthy ask.

disclaimer up front that it's been a while since I made that analysis post and I barely remember what I said in it, and I might not even agree with all of it myself anymore (aside from like. the basics. TF2 is satirical comedy, the comics fucked up by overlooking the "satire" aspect, Spy being Scout's real dad was a stupid twist that ruins a perfectly good joke for the sake of a very silly plotline with poor payoff, etc)

that aside, Scout and Ms. Pauling ..? it's really hard for me to imagine a way they could have ended up together that wouldn't feel contrived.

Ms. Pauling's character in the comics is, in general, on very shaky ground with the game's tone, in my opinion. she's severely held back by the fact that she was not created to be a major character in the first place - her character design is understated and unfocused, her personality is quiet and mellow in a world full of bombastic characters who easily outshine her, and she cannot easily produce natural-feeling comedy. it's clear that she was created to be an extension of the Administrator's character first and foremost, and a "straight man" for zanier characters to bounce off of as a hard second priority. she was supposed to stand in the background and look normal and non-threatening as a foil to the main cast, and occasionally imply that the Administrator has eyes and ears everywhere, and is constantly pulling strings from behind the scenes.

Ms. Pauling worked extremely well for the role intended for her, but pulling her into the spotlight and essentially making her the protagonist of the longform comic was a mistake, in my opinion. she's not funny enough to make good use of her "screentime" and attempts to make her funny often feel too noncommittal and cutesy contrasted with the rest of the cast, because getting too crazy with it would feel out of character. on the contrary, the more serious and emotional aspects added to her feel too vulnerable next to all of these stone-cold (and largely-male) killers she's hanging out with. these missteps, combined with being the female character with by far the most focus in a mostly-male cast, makes her feel like a shitty "the girl one" stereotype.

for that reason, I don't think she could have ended up with Scout without the relationship feeling forced and distractingly heteronormative.

our main woman being smaller, cuter, quieter, more well-mannered, less quirky, less bombastic, and overall less impactful than all the male characters is one thing (that already sucks). but then also ending up with the shitty sexist guy who's been harassing her since the moment they were on the same comic page together? miserable. unsalvageable. then we're at a critical amount of shitty tropes stacked on top of each other

Ms. Pauling's one saving grace in all of this is that at the very least, her character orbited another female character this whole time, and her entire arc is about her relationship to this other woman. I genuinely really, really enjoyed that aspect of the comic. I think the whole plotline was a poor choice for a TF2 comic specifically, but if it hadn't been a TF2 comic? Ms. P would've been a way more enjoyable character, with so much less baggage. her relationship with the Administrator is fascinating, and the way the narrative essentially used her as a crowbar to open up the treasure chest of secrets that is the Administrator's motives and backstory was fantastic.

it just would've been better as its own thing. controversially, I think the TF2 comics should've been about the main characters from TF2, not some random minor character who got promoted into a main character role that she really wasn't fit for. and also if you're gonna promote a random side character to protagonist, at the very least pick someone who works for the genre and tone. or at least find a way to make her character enjoyable on the first read, instead of only in retrospect when you know the big twist at the end.

the writers couldn't figure out how to do any of that, but at least they didn't make their extremely mid Relatable Girl Protagonist kiss some annoying dude. she spent the whole comic obsessed with an insane gilfy old girlboss. and isn't that all any of us can hope for

Its such a shame that things ended like they did in the series.

We are not allowed to always expect the best to happen when everyone is together, we must also expect the worst. Thats what they dindt think about. And because of it, Akira was isolated, rage heading towards mankind, and the demons. But it were the humans who killed his friends. And it was the demons who had caused the humans to become angry. And this has started because of the negativity that surrounded them all. Sacrifice happened, but it wasn’t for the right party. Devilman’s and Demons fought for humanity. Humans decided to kill each and everyone. That states a lot.

The moment Miki accepted Akira, Eventho he was a Devilman (unwillingly tho) represented that not all humans are bad but can become evil when pushed to the edge. Even in her last moments, her last run, she trusted him till the end. She said to herself that he will take the baton . Not in a metaphoric meaning. SHE really believed it. Representig the trust towards him, while getting stabbed and shot from behinde by scared humans. he coulndt take her baton so he had to see her burn and decaptivated head onto a stick held by murderes.

Is the reason you would play merfolk trickster over destruction removal is that it costs less Mana? Like in general is it used for stalling until you have enough mana for your big spells?

A couple things: #1 being because I’m playing a mono-blue deck, I don’t have any hard removal. Black has hard removal, blue has counterspells that stop creatures hitting the board in the first place. But I wouldn’t use a counterspell on a 1/2 flyer, I’d normally just hope to outpace it. The other thing is that my deck is a tempo deck & desn’t have any big spells. While my big win condition is to drop a Tempest Djinn, which has as much power as I have mana (ie. at least 3 and up to 21 >.>), and is excellent at closing out games, most of the time I win with a death by a thousand cut style of attacking with my 1 and 2 power creatures. So a 2/2 body that disrupts their field is part of my gameplan.

I did actually play a blue/black deck with a similar gameplan that took some cheap removal (1 and 2 mana, removal is p cheap!) but I actually found it was too slow... The thing about the trickster is despite being such a little seeming card, it can very drastically swing the game in my favour. Like, say I’ve just attacked why my two creatures, and you've just attacked with your two creatures. We’re entering a ‘race’. But you have more damage on the board, or you have a life lead on me, or something like that: you’re going to win the race. On your next turn, before you attack, I play my trickster, stop one of your guys from attacking, and then attack with all my guys next turn. Now I’m ahead on the race, because I prevented your damage and now I have more on the board. So now you’re the one on the back foot, trying to find an out to my inevitable victory, and I have a hand full of counterspells to stop you from doing that. So the merfolk trickster is a very strong card and can often be more effective than removal would be.

So in this case, a removal would be ‘better’ in the sense of being a 3-for-1, I’d get rid of both of his enchantments and his flyer, but the way I did it, I was representing 2 damage per turn while he was representig 1, so it placed me at an advantage while a removal spell would just reset us to neutral. The concede was of course premature, but if he didn’t have any outs to my 2/2 in hand, I can see why he felt that the game was already over.

Another throwback, this time to the Reclining Buddha himself😁 The size of this statue is impressive - 41 meters long, 11 meters high and weights "just" 300 tons. Its size is the same as New York's Statue of Liberty! It's also bigger than famous giant bronze Buddha statues in Kamakura and Nara (13 metres high, 93 tons and 15 metres high,250 tons respectively)!😱 There are 3 poses that are basic for Buddha statues. These are: sitting Buddha, standing Buddha and reclining Buddha. In Japan the most popular pose is sitting Buddha, representing the Buddha who meditates. Way less popular is the reclining pose, representig Buddha at the point of his death, entering Nirvana (called nehan in Japanese, that is why the statue is called Nehanzo). If you look closely, you will see colourful cords attached to Buddha's hand. The cords are connected to the place where worshippers come to say their prayers, allowing them to "shake hands" with Buddha and possibly receive the power of Buddha himself. There are 5 colours: yellow, green, red, white and purple - it is said that upon his death, Buddha was able to see 5 colours of light when he was becoming enlightened.
