Repost because tumblr's tags were broken yesterday and it ate my post up 😞 Spoilers and translation notes for Rafayel's intertidal zone & analysis because it kinda floored me, I was just as a blank page as he was throughout this. I had to watch it like 5 times to understand what the story was saying and dig into chinese and japanese versions of this to piece together what was really happening. It may be my idiot brain not getting it and maybe it was like the easiest thing to understand for you but. Yeah. I may be just dumb LMFAO AND!!!! There's also a theory of mine into how Rafayel is actually able to read mc's mind/wishes through their lemurian bond, so stay tuned for that I guess

So Rafayel’s whole deal in this memory, I believe, is dependency. Like, too much intensity, too much need, too much fear -- about scaring her off, about what he sees himself possibly becoming in the future, overall just being too reliant on mc and getting scared by it.

Let's begin with this massive fear of being a taker, not just in the “I’m stealing someone’s fries” way, but in this existential, soul-deep kind of way where he’s terrified of turning everything he loves into something he exploits out of demand for his art. And yeah, it’s sad when you first hear him say it, but it’s also really interesting when you look at how this all ties into his relationship with MC and his inspiration source drying up because of her.

Before Rafayel became an artist, he looked at the world in this super pure, wholesome way. Sceneries and nature were just there, things to admire and feel awe over without needing to do anything about it. Like, imagine standing at the edge of a desert, looking at a sea that’s drying up. Sure, it’s tragic, but it’s also kind of beautiful in a raw, heartbreaking way. That’s how Rafayel saw things, he could appreciate them without feeling like he had to do anything.

But then Rafayel started creating, and suddenly, sceneries weren’t just sceneries anymore. They became inspiration. He wasn’t just admiring beauty, he was extracting something from it, its meaning, its pain, its soul, to turn into art for other people. And that made him feel all kinds of icky, because now he wasn’t just looking at the drying sea. He was taking from it. Just as he's using his people's pain in his art as well, that's also a thing.

Now let’s talk about MC. Rafayel loves her like he used to love those sceneries,,, in this pure, untainted way. There's a parallel here. But here’s the kicker, he’s not the same guy who can just admire something and leave it untouched anymore.

And suddenly, this is no longer only about losing inspiration for him.

This happens after he and MC get together, and it’s like all the pain and anguish that used to fuel his creativity just.. ... dries up. He can’t find that spark anymore because now his life is surrounded by love instead of suffering. In fact, his inspiration starts coming from her and it's starting to clash with how he makes art. In the phone call, he seeks her out and says he needs her so bad and she only needs to talk to help him out. This is the first wink wink nod nod of the story.

So what does Rafayel do? He goes on this big, dramatic trip to "find inspiration" (or at least his muse), but it’s not just about his art. He’s not just looking for inspiration, he’s trying to figure out how to be less dependent on her and becoming increasingly more restless over this. The temparature and physical discomfort is making things worse, he's anxiously overthinking, and imagine trying to fight this and the longest art block as of late off when all you want to do is indulge in this special person and be comforted like a lap cat all day every day.

He understands that if he lets himself indulge without restraint, one day his love for mc will turn into pure need. He’ll become more and more greedy, and he doesn’t want that and is afraid of being abandoned because of that growing neediness and dependency.

This is in relation to his art, because as @/dat-silvers-girl put in the comments, he's struggling with "the genuine fear of not being able to enjoy anything in life because all you're thinking about how to use it (as an artist)" . what if he starts doing this to her? to their love and relationship? take from her, and become someone who only takes in every area of life -- like someone who only exploits things by extracting what he feels about them to use it for his art. he's afraid of that, he doesn't like that and possibly doesn't like himself who does it. so why should she? she would leave him for sure, in his head, that's a solid reason to.

The first time around he brings up his anxiety about MC leaving him out of the inner realization of his dependency, the possibility of just what he can become, and fear of abandonment. she effortlessly soothes his worries. It's heavily implied they did it afterwards and after hearing "her life has already been consumed by him" he tweaked out a little bit and his "obsession" seeped through.

After it fades to black, he says ほら……僕もとっくに……君に侵食されてしまっているんだ…… which means "See... I've already been completely consumed by you too" in Japanese instead of the life being made a chaotic mess localization. While I think MC's line was jokey and lighthearted, I don't think this man is joking at all. Rafayel didn't say his life was consumed by her as well, he said HE was consumed. Ouh.

This took the edge off from him for a while but they hadn't gotten to the root of the problem yet, so he was back to square one after the memorial hall, because remember, he's trying to find inspiration as an act of making this dependency of his better. Pain and suffering are all around him here, which his inspiration feeds off of. The dried up ocean he could hear weakening, the skeleton of the whale, the burden of his people and homeland more prominent than before. And what does MC do? Tear through the perspective of pain and introduce a hopeful alternative, "Isn't it a surprise to see an ocean in the middle of the desert?"

This is a place that gave Rafayel the height of helplessness and suffering when he visited by himself before despite momentarily being hopeful after the locals told him such a place existed. But now, she was there to comfort him through his loneliness and pain, hug him, and give him hope yet again. He brings up how he wanted to come here with the most important person to him when he was still hopeful about it before consumed by the pain of it all, and that wish has been granted. That moment has to be so powerful for Rafayel. Literally light at the end of the tunnel.

It had me reeling that he just sat in the car after all that, staring at her for god knows how long until she woke up. He was probably overthinking again, but my interpretation that it was heavily emotional for him (it could have meant so little for MC but the world for him, she doesn't even know) and he wanted to be in that moment with her, just feel and look without restraint. Indulge a little. (I can just imagine him going just a little bit more, I'll go after she wakes up.) And like. His eyes are shining in the darkness is the description here. Perhaps he was feeling so much here. So much love. So much happiness. And he's about to go in for a kiss (heavy breathing and everything) after that, but holds himself back and actively has to pry himself away. He's feeling the neediness again.

That’s why he makes an effort to actively wean himself off and says he'll be okay on his own. What he says to her after MC is like "spoiling him" being all "hey you're sick maybe don't go? or let's go together?" (which is NOT helping Rafayel at all) is even more meaningful in Japanese and I didn't know why they left out this context, but the rearranged line would be "Do you want me to become a sea creature beached on the sand after the sea recedes, unable to breathe on my own ever again?"

Yeah. YEAH. This is about dependency. (He's saying don't coddle me I'll literally become that wolf tearing his shirt meme 😭)

So of course his stubbornness and anxiety force him to do things without MC and distance himself, he can do it. He’s determined to prove to himself that he can endure it on his own.

I also feel like part of the reason he insisted on going to the salon alone is that he’s still worried mc might come to dislike the version of him who's someone he's so sure she will leave, who isn't perfect and he hides behind the persona he's put up just for her. If he truly becomes addicted to her and shows her everything/his true self, and she ends up leaving him, it would completely break him. He's trying to be like "im so normal about her haha" but he's so not normal about her at all. He's literally obsessed I feel like, and perhaps this is him fighting it knowing it's not healthy.

and OOOH about why he ends up coming back from the salon all hot and bothered.

I have strong context that she flicked the bean in there after he left her high and dry in the car ("hot water washes away the stickiness from my body and his stifled breaths still echo in my ears, enveloping me along with the steam in the bathroom. The warmth from his fingertips lingers in the places where he touched me..." is the english. however, in chinese, it goes "熱水洗去身上的黏膩，壓抑的喘息迴盪在我耳畔，和浴室裡氤氳的水氣一起包裹著我." stating "the suppressed breathing" -- which doesn't have any possessive adjectives when I translated it on google and later explicitly asked chatgpt if it had any his/my adjectives involved, just to be sure. it said no but i'd like it if a real chinese speaking person could give their input on this !!! PLEASE DONT LEAVE ME WITH CHATGPT

so um. if the context is in fact the case that he heard her masturbating to him, the intensity with which he attacked her would be normal, I think 😭

I have belief that MC unconsciously shatters his "training himself to be without her" determination through their bond. She just keeps thinking about him the entire time. about him reading her thoughts, though. we still don't know all about the lemurian bond they share. I’d say it grants him some sort of mind/heart reading ability or connects their minds together (when she was thinking about whether she should hug him, he answered “yes”).

At the salon, I imagine Rafayel was already thinking about her like crazy. Then he realized, or perhaps, "heard" she was still worrying about him and thinking of him (as much he thought about her) and decided to go back. Rafayel probably felt that suppressing himself was only making her more anxious and unsettled. She's thinking all about him, unconsciously calling to him to come to her, she didn't want to let him go at all, wanted to go with him, etc...

but even if it was his own decision and no mind reading was involved... uh. If you ask me. He did quite literally hear her after coming back. That's also something that might make him think she wants him as much as he wants her, which made his self-restraint utterly meaningless from the start.

Disregarding this theory of mine proven wrong until a Chinese speaker helps me out here, MC returned to Rafayel's room. A translation omission happened here from what I saw. There are no possessive adjectives in the Chinese text about the room she returns to, and the Japanese one states she returned to the guest room (doesn't specify which one. She was also able to enter Rafayel's room without needing to knock before.)

so uh. she went into rafayel's room y'all. the line "this is my room, you're the one who walked in here" MAKES SO MUCH MORE SENSE. (SO LIKE. NOT ONLY DID SHE GO INTO HIS ROOM, SHE FLICKED THE BEAN THERE AND HE POSSIBLY HEARD IT. SHE'S MORE OF A FREAK THAN HE IS, I UNDERSTAND WHY HE LET GO AFTER THAT LMFAO)

I don't put it past him to get worked up after he finds her in his room post-bath even without my theory lmfao (idk why they put her in a dress when she should be in a bathrobe or something 😭)

His conclusion at the end of this memory that "he finds inspiration in pain and the art of creation is a part of his life. mc made him realize love and art are so alike. even if they don't complete him but burn him instead he wants them (love and art) with every fiber of his being" and MC says she doesn't like that, rightfully so.

So like. There's SO MUCH to unpack in here.

When Rafayel says he finds inspiration in pain and that creation is a part of his life, he’s admitting something raw and essential about himself: pain isn’t just a byproduct of his art, it’s intrinsic to it. For Rafayel, pain and art are intertwined in a way that’s almost inseparable. It’s like his muse isn’t just beauty, but beauty that hurts.

But then he takes this further by connecting art to love. He’s realized that both art and love demand the same from him: vulnerability, passion, and sometimes suffering. They don’t necessarily complete him (he’s not romanticizing them as salvation), but they burn him, wear him down, consume him (coincidentally, this is something he said to MC in the JP dub of this memory, that she consumes him), but also give him life. And for Rafayel, that’s the crux, even if they burn him, he wants them with every fiber of his being.

This is such a Rafayel thing to say. It’s dramatic, it’s tortured, but it’s also deeply SUBTLE. He doesn't spell all of these out, mind you, I got a headache trying to understand him. Or I'm just slow, I don't know. It shows how much he values creation and connection, even if they come at a cost.

MC, on the other hand, challenges this perspective. When she says she doesn’t like that he views love and art as things that burn him, she’s pushing back against the idea that suffering is a necessary part of creation, or love. MC doesn’t want Rafayel to see their relationship as something that requires him to hurt. She’s telling him, “You don’t have to destroy yourself to love me.”

When MC says, “You’ll never have to burn for me,” she’s giving Rafayel an alternative to his destructive mindset. She’s saying that love doesn’t have to hurt, that their relationship can exist without him sacrificing himself on the altar of passion. It’s a refusal to let Rafayel romanticize pain as the price of love.

And I love that Rafayel goes, "Will you help me look for other parts in life outside of pain?" in response. This is NOT about art or inspiration anymore, and the way the dialogue is written is just AUGH. Again I had to rewatch this over and over again for the nuances and subtext.

I love MC's response, she knew exactly what to say. “I’ll always be the one who walks along the shore with you. Of course, diving into the sea bed is fine too. If it can snow in the desert, there will be a day when the ocean returns.”

MC’s response is layered with metaphors, but at its core, it’s about unwavering support and hope::

Walking along the shore: This represents safety and companionship. MC is saying she’ll be with Rafayel in the calm, in the moments where they’re just observing life without diving into its depths. She’ll be his steady presence, his grounding force.

Diving into the sea bed: This is an acknowledgment that life and love sometimes require going deeper and they may go through hardships, into the unknown, the murky, the challenging. MC isn’t afraid of this, she’s willing to go there with him too.

Snow in the desert and the ocean’s return: This is a symbol of hope and transformation beyond being a nod to The Sea of Golden Sand. Snow in the desert seems impossible, just like the idea of Rafayel finding inspiration outside of pain might feel impossible to him. But MC believes in the extraordinary, in change, and in the possibility that beauty and creation can exist outside of suffering.

Her words are a promise: she’s willing to stand by him, to face the unknown together, and to hold onto the belief that a new way of seeing the world is possible.

And Rafayel LOWKEY PROPOSES IN RETURN.

By saying “let’s watch the sea together,” he’s accepting MC’s offer of companionship and hope in the long run. He’s recognizing that life doesn’t have to be about diving into the depths alone, it can be about sharing the experience with someone else, even if it’s just standing on the shore and watching.

“Every sea”: This phrase is key. Rafayel isn’t just committing to one kind of life or one kind of inspiration, he’s opening himself up to all possibilities. Watching every sea means embracing all facets of life, whether they’re calm or turbulent, painful or beautiful. It’s a marriage proposal declaration that he’s ready to explore the world beyond pain, with MC by his side.

So. I love that his inspiration returns after his freak is accepted by MC because he literally feels the acceptance through the bond.

Recipe: Supernatural Devil's Trap Demon Proof Cherry Pie

Hello, tumblr family. Below is a repost of an article originally posted on adorpheus.com, and is being shared here for archival purposes. Original post date: Circa 2012.

You know what's pretty cool? Fandom food things. I came up with this Supernatural themed cherry pie a few years ago. Here's the recipe I came up with.

(sugar free, gluten free option, vegan) I make it up as I go along for this pie, so the measurements are approximate. Use your own discretion, you culinary genius, you!

For the crust we used Namaste Foods Biscuits Pie Crust and More Mix. We followed the directions for pie crust, except we substituted the butter with Earth Balance (the stick kind) and the egg with a flax "egg". You can use a pre-made pie crust if that behooves you.

For the filling

2 ten ounce bags of frozen pitted cherries, preferably organic (about 4-5 cups). Obviously you can use fresh cherries too, but do YOU wanna remove the seeds from 4 cups of cherries?

1 cup of water

1/2 tsp of sea salt

3 TBSP (or more to taste) of Stevia Baking Blend Powder, Coconut Sugar, or other dry sweetener

1 TBSP of organic cornstarch

For the Devil's Trap Again, I was winging it here. This also made way more chocolate than we needed (we ate the rest like fondue and dipped banana slices in it).

1/4 cup cocoa powder

2-3 TBSP coconut oil, melted

Stevia or other sweetener to taste

(You can also melt some vegan chocolate chips if you don't want to make your own chocolate sauce from scratch).

Method

Preheat the oven to 350f/176c. Make the pie crust according to the package directions if you're not using a pre-made crust. Put the bottom crust into a greased 8-inch pie pan.

To make the filling, combine the first 4 filling ingredients in a saucepan over medium heat. Cook until the stevia or other sweetener is dissolved and the cherries are defrosted, and the water is boiling a little. Add more water if necessary. Once its boiling, add in the cornstarch and whisk until thickened. Pour the cooked filling into the bottom crust and prepare the top crust while the mixture cools. Add the top crust when ready.

For the devil's trap, I etched it into the top crust with a knife prior to baking (above). We used this image from Super-Wiki as a reference.

Anyways, after that we put it in the oven until it looked done. Probably about a half hour, but I wasn't really paying attention. You bake it until the crust is browned a little and if you can see any of the filling, it should be bubbling. Before decorating with chocolate, set the pie aside to cool for at least 45 minutes. Especially if you're using coconut oil, you don't want the pie to be warm at all because it'll melt the chocolate. After the pie is cooled off, assemble all the chocolate ingredients in a saucepan and heat over low until the coconut oil is melted. Whisk them together to form a chocolate sauce. I used a knife to carefully (painfully) draw the design by dipping the tip of the knife in chocolate and drawing along the lines I had etched in the crust prior to baking. This was tricky and not that fun. If you have a better method for doing this, go ahead and try that. Let the chocolate cool. Eat.

Kirsch family headcanons! 💕 (Pt. 2)

(Reposting this in parts because Tumblr changed their shit and won't let me edit the original post now.)

All of them were upset when Richie told them he was moving to California (they’re from the Midwest, so that’s way across the country), but Quinn especially, who yelled at him and then stomped up to her room, slamming the door shut. Ethan just sat on the couch, pouting with his arms crossed, saying nothing. (Richie, of course, knew why he was going, but he couldn’t give them an answer other than that he wanted to, which is probably what hurt the most. It felt like he was just abandoning the family; that he had his own life now and was ready to move on from them.)

Once Richie moved to California, he FaceTimed/Skyped/whatever with them all of the time. Like, almost every day. They certainly texted daily. A lot of memes and stuff like that, especially between Quinn and Richie.

I don’t even- ...I don’t even know how to describe what it was like when they got the news that Richie was murdered and was involved in a killing spree in California. It was... it was sad is all I know. I imagine they were all home together when they got the news. They were definitely breaking down, mixed with denial. Wayne fell to the floor and sobbed once it hit him; his first baby was gone. Quinn practically had a panic attack right then; in fact, she probably did. And Ethan simply shut down; he just stood there against the wall for about 10 minutes, wordless, showing no reaction, staring at nothing, likely in a state of shock.

Ethan had a bit of a Roman Roy moment at Richie’s funeral. If you know, you know.

Wayne was so deep in his grief that the kids (more so Quinn, the Eldest Daughter™/now Eldest Child™) had to start taking care of him, making sure that he ate and got some sleep.

Quinn and Ethan saw the pictures that Wayne saw of Richie. I have varying theories about this that I enjoy, but all I know is that they saw those pictures. Did Wayne show them the pictures to motivate them? I like to think he tried to keep them from seeing them, but the man was so far gone in his devastation that who’s to say?

Wayne was so sleep-deprived that, when Ethan came to visit him in his office (home office, not at work) before bed one night, standing in the doorway, Wayne accidently called him Richie before realizing and correcting his mistake. He apologized, and Ethan just said it was okay. He wanted to be upset, but he knew it was a simple sleep-deprived mistake; he also knew that it had to be hard for his father to look at him and not see his first son.

Mom/Wife didn't want to talk about Richie after the funeral. She wanted to pretend that he'd never existed. Furthermore, she became cold (or colder, since he sounds like he really hated her in the script) toward Ethan because look at him. How was she supposed to forget her eldest son when her youngest looks and acts so much like him?

When Wayne brought up the revenge idea, and Mrs. Kirsch refused, freaking out and all (as one would do), Ethan knew they had to get rid of her, and he was so angry that she would betray Richie like that. He stormed off to the kitchen, grabbed a large knife, came back to the living room, and just stabbed the shit outta her! All of his rage toward her and about the entire situation just poured out. Quinn and Wayne were in shock. I have no idea how they handled that afterward.

Wayne actually misses his wife, which is why he still wears his wedding ring.

On Richie’s first birthday after his death (which would also end up being the only one they’d be alive for), they “celebrated” with a small chocolate cake (his favorite) and blew out the candles together. 🥺 (Richie is a September baby, to me. A Virgo.)

for silly edits usually just picsart, but procreate for the more intense ones. gifs i use a yt downloader site, then capcut to edit, then ezgif. videos either splice or capcut. glitters i made a tutorial here, but like, my method is really complicated since i’m always on my phone, so there’s probably an easier way if you have a pc…

As she traced through the hostile maze of thorny vines and voracious tendrils of Mordremoth’s realm, she realised how fitting it was that her own heart was ensnared in an evergrowing hold, coiling like ivy and tightening with every moment under the canopy.

Seeds planted one by one with every little moment - small attentions, whispered encouragements and lingering glances, stolen in the heat of the battle – blossoming and reaching towards a gentle light, burying roots into her soul till it smothered her and stole her breath away.

It wasn’t falling. It was growing.

A bitter harvest of battles lost and lives forsaken. A weight pulling at the strings attached on her heart with every fearful night and every vengeful wake. A scream growing in her chest and dying in her throat with every nightmare. A sorrowful pride leaving a taste of salt on her lips and a burn on her lids with every testimony of their sacrifice.

It wasn’t falling. It was growing.

Short-lived relief when her friends were rescued, a vision of Nightmare averted at the tip of her sword, slashing through the blighting pods. Shallow satisfaction at being a thorn in the dragon’s side. Profound unadulterated dread at the thought of everything she still had to lose. Guilt and despair when there should be joy and relief. The bitter taste of defeat in the midst of victory.

A thousand sharp thorns clawing at her. A thousand blighted branches slowing her advance. A thousand cruel tendrils quartering her heart as they mangled him.

It wasn’t falling.

A vertiginous drop, a chasm gaping like an open wound to the Heart of Thorns, a fall she would gladly take if it meant saving him.

It was growing.

Embers flaring into a searing brightness burning away the remnants of doubt and reducing the shadow to cinders.

It wasn’t falling.

A darkness remaining, beckoning him to succumb.

And raging against the cries and the roars of the Dragon, a call more beautiful.

“Our fates are bound together. I’m not leaving without you.”

And I will chase it back to you.

imagine laying in bed, you are just not yourself. you've been sick all day or something is just off with you. it's not your day. but then cheol comes home and you smell him before you see him. his cologne hitting your nose along with the comforting smell of soup.

when you look up to the doorway you instantly pull the covers over your head because he literally looks like an angel whereas you in your own mind think you must look like the creature from the black lagoon who just happened to be snuggled into your shared bed. seungcheol laughs and sheds his coat while you listen to the sounds of the bags in his hands being sat down.

"you can hide from me but you are still going to eat." you shake your head at his words and sniffle making him laugh again before he sighs. his eyes looking at the lump under the comforter as he takes out the food and sits it on the nightstand before finally sitting down pulling the covers from over your head.

"cheol...no I look so awful. Just leave the food and go." the smile drops from his face as he shakes his head at your words as he smooths your messy hair from having been in bed most of the day before he moves to pick up a container of soup and a spoon gathering some.

"you are perfect and i'm not leaving. you don't feel well and my place is right here, feeding you soup and then i'm going to hold you while we watch bad tv until you fall back to sleep." you pout at the man as he blows on the soup making sure it isn't too hot before he offers you the spoon which you sip the broth off of.

the soup and his company makes you feel warm and comforted. tears almost threatening the brim on your eyes as you watch him get you another spoonful of soup. "thanks cheol..." he smiles and offers you the spoon once again as he watches you with loving eyes. "of course baby. i want you to feel better."

you nod and take the soup closing your eyes making seungcheol smile again, pleased with watching you eat. "so do you want to watch a home improvement show or a cooking show?" you can't help but to smile as he winks at you gathering more soup.

Ai’ with Aye & Akk - The Eclipse & Thai honorifics

So I went down quite a rabbit hole with your bl linguistics Tag (thanks for that, 3 hours of reading when I should have been sleeping or working on my masters thesis for Wednesday :/ ), and I am riveted. I started watching Thai BLs with bad buddy when it was airing, and have watched most of the ones that have aired since then and now working on the backlog. I love linguistics, and have been noticing the different personal pronouns etc in Thai especially, so it was really cool to see that all laid out in your posts! The third person one is particular is quite special to me, and I wish it existed more in English and German. It's very frustrating being a genderqueer person living in Germany because non gendered pronouns don't really exist, and when they do it's quite niche and hard to get others to use :/

I couldn't agree more. I've grown to have real affection and love for Thailand's pronouns.

I also adore the way in many Asian languages we can just say our own name for the "I" pronoun. So much harder to forget someone's name and ALSO  you're consistently reminded of what it is and how it shoudl be pronounced.

Anyway, my question is, I noticed in The Eclipse the Ai' prefix (particle?) used between the boys, which you mentioned is not really used in BLs often, and I wanted your more detailed take on the way that Akk changes in his address of Aye in this regard, especially over the last couple of episodes. Is he being particularly rude?

Ai is an honorific originally used between peer/age mates/equals. (Like Phi or Nong.)

But now, depending on the stress/emphasis it carries different connotations including affection (Akk & Aye), insult (Ae & Pond in Love By Chance), annoyance/exasperation (Leo in Don't Say No), or pleading/whining (Fiat in Don't Say No).

Is he being particularly rude?

Yes but also, no. He's being... rudely affectionate? He's changing the boundaries of their relationship with, what amounts to, what I'd call an “insult honorific or mode of address.” (Common within peer groups, particularly marginalized ones. See gay & masculine identified use of "bitch" in late 90s early 2000s queer culture, particularly in North American coastal cities.)

So amongst some of my queer friends, regardless of gender or orientation someone will often yell, "Hey Biiitchesss!" Technically an insulting term, in this context, a friends honorific among peers and a way of identifying oneself and ones friends as different from the surrounding social morays.

Back to Ai'.

It seems mostly used for relationship emphasis these days (friendly intimacy, of a jocular/teasing nature), and almost always among peers. I think of it occasionally as an insult honorific.

In California the word "dude" is often used for this. "Seriously, dude!?" when someone cuts you off on the FWY. "Hey, Dude" to a friend you meet for lunch. "Awe, Dude, that's rough" affection/sympathy. And so forth.

I haven't watched Eclipse in a while so I can't speak to the bit your actually referring to. So there may be an additional use pattern in play, but Ai is an interesting honorific, in that it's one of those that isn’t always, or even often, entirely honoring. So to speak.

Never let me go also seems to be playing with the formality a lot, due to the class differences, which is cool to see. I'm sure the changing register and formality will play into PalmNuengs speech as the show progresses hehe.

No apologies for rambling needed here, since I’m ruler of rambletown. 

Yes it’s very very fun to see. You also get this a little with RainPhayu in Oh My Sunshine night (young high class seme + older servant uke), and a TON with Ae & Pete in Love By Chance. 

If you haven’t watched it, I would highly recommend that one. Pete talks almsot entirely in high formal register and Ae in low. It’s a great way to train your ear for the two different registers. There’s no spoiled prince dynamic, so it’s an entirely different play on a class difference than NLMG. They are one of my all time favorite pairs for many reasons. Language is one.

My personal instructions for the Holi Loli tiered headbow pattern

<Note: I've literally spent like 4 hours on this post, was making a final adjustment, and tumblr ate the post. This is the same post, rewritten from memory, by someone who is now very angry>

Good headbows are kind of hard to make, because they rely so much on good proportioning. Because of this, it's helpful to find a good pattern with good proportions, and use that. After all, that's what patterns are for.

This $4 pattern makes a very lovely headbow, but unfortunately, it doesn't come with instructions [more on that later]. Because of that, I'm going to share the method that I had to figure out to use this pattern. This is entirely my original method that I determined by using my experience sewing, and will probably differ from the way that Holi Loli assembled their example bows. This is not me reposting anyone else's work and is just my interpretation of how to make a pattern that did not come with instructions.

Let's begin.

The pattern does come with instructions on how to print the pattern on your home printer and assemble it, and these steps show that they do know how to make instructions.

There are six pattern pieces, for three components of the bows. The pieces are called A, B, and C, and there are pieces for the fabric and for the interfacing. These pieces do have cutting instructions on them, so cutting out the interfacing is relatively straightforward.

However, I deviated when it came to cutting out the actual bow.

These bow components fit perfectly on a fat quarter without almost any leftover space. To do this, fold piece B in half, and then cut four of that piece.

Piece C is in the corner, with the short side along the short side of the fat quarter and the long side along the long side. Then, one copy of piece A goes along the short side next to piece C, and the other piece goes along the long side next to piece C. Four copies of piece B will stack nicely in the remaining space.

Yes, this means that one copy of piece A will be at a 90 degree angle relative to the other pieces, but you can use that piece as your facing and no one will ever know, since it'll be inside the bow loops.

You now need to take your piece B's and sew the short sides together so that you have pieces that are the size of your actual pattern piece. Use the smallest seam allowance you can. This seam will be hidden under piece A and piece C, so it doesn't need to be beautiful and matched.

Look at your pieces B and A and decide which will be the front, and which will be the facing. On piece A, the piece with the sideways print will be your facing. Fuse your interfacing onto the facings of A and B, and onto the back of piece C, since there is no facing on that.

We add lace. This pattern looks good with a single line of details running down the length of both A and B. I'm using lace here but I've also used machine embroidery, and it looks good. This is a good size project to use your repositionable hoop on, if that's what you're into. Here, I'm using a premade venise lace with some bows.

Based on the pattern drawings and the fact that this shop is in Canada, I think this pattern uses a 1cm seam allowance. So, I placed my edging lace at 1cm in from the edge, with the decorations pointed inward. This way, when I turned them to front, the lace is pointing outward.

The way I assembled this bow, part A is sewn as a tube, with the ends open. Part B is sewn almost all the way around, with just a little hole for turning. This means that I needed to put lace on the ends of part B, but it would be a waste to do it on the ends of part A. (You can also save some lace by not applying it to the last inch or so of part A on each end, since that will be folded back).

The lace is sewn on first, and then the facings are placed right sides together on their respective pieces, pinned, and sewn. If you did lace edging, it helps to sew this piece with the lace side up, so you can see where the edging actually is.

So, piece A: Sew the two long sides so that you have a tube with open ends. Turn to front and press. Piece B: Sew almost all the way around the piece. Leave a couple of inches of space near the center seam. You leave the hole here so that it will be covered by piece A and piece C in the finished bow. Turn the piece inside-out and press. Piece C: Fold in half like a hot dog. Sew down the long side. Turn to front. Roll the piece so that the seam is in the back, press, turn to front, press again. This hides the back seam.

Fun fact, I tend to get into a groove and autopilot sew all the way around the piece, and then have to seam rip my opening, because I sewed it shut. To avoid this, I will make a little plus sign with two pins at the point where I need to start and stop, so that I can't forget.

You need to join the two short edges of A together so that it becomes a loop. I did this with a zigzag where the stitches fell off the edge on the right side. This trick lets you open it up to a seam that's completely flat. You can also just stick the two ends over each other and sew down that.

My scissors in that bottom picture show the opening I had to leave to turn piece B to the front. Since this piece will be hidden under pieces A and C, you can just sew that together on machine, being careful to sew near the edge.

Thread up a hand sewing needle and some hefty thread, though, because you now need to gather your central bow bits. Normally on a bow, I stack the two pieces and then fold them into an M, but my interfacing made that incredibly difficult, so I gathered them separately. No picture, but after I gathered the A part, I still wasn't happy with the way it lay, so I took some of my chunky thread and just wrapped it all the way around the middle so that I could snug it up a little bit.

Stack pieces A and B, and wrap piece C around the middle. Tuck the raw edge down so things are pretty, and sew this seam shut.

I got my headbands for this for 99cents for two at Goodwill, and they don't have the kind of bar where you can slide the bow onto the band, so I will attach this with several whip stitches after I set the B part into its tiered ends.

Setting the tiers is a little bit of an art, and I'm going to say that because every time I tried to measure these, it looked bad. Actually, it looked so bad on this pink headbow that I'm using these two examples instead. The end results come from a little bit of measuring and a lot of eyeballing things until they look right and even.

I took a lot of inspiration from this tiered bow that I already own. I'm at the picture cap for this post so here's a link to my International Lolita Day 2022 coord where I was wearing it. You can look up more bow options to try to figure out how you like things.

I found it easiest to tack the bow with pins and then stick it on my head to see where it looks the best. What we know from this pattern is that it is possible to do a really nice tiered effect with these proportions, so just keep messing with it until you unlock the secret...and then try to remember it for your next bow!

Once you have your tiers proportioned, I found that I liked whipstitching the back side of the pieces together, and then steaming the bow to get it to stay pretty and in this shape. You can use a couple of tacking stitches or some fabric glue if you'd rather.

And then, I sew the center of the bow and the very tail ends of the tiers to the headband, so that everything looks nice and pretty and stays in place. There you go! You made a bow!

Final note:

Addressing the elephant: I am aware that you can purchase a separate tutorial for this pattern. The pattern is $4 and the tutorial is $10. They are sold as separate products and I am going to treat them as separate products. I did not buy the tutorial. This tutorial that I have just made is my own interpretation of the pattern, based on my own sewing experience, showcasing techniques that are probably not or definitely are not in the tutorial.

As someone who has made a LOT of tutorials, I'm aware of how much work they are, and I believe that if someone wants to be paid extra to make a very thorough tutorial, it's fair to ask for extra money as compensation for the work.

Here's where we get to it, though. This tutorial and this pattern are not Pokemon Red and Pokemon Blue. Pokemon Red and Blue are two games that can stand alone, but where 100% coolness is accomplished by playing both of them. This is more like buying "a cup of soda" for $1 and they hand you an empty cup, and the fine print says that the "of soda" is another $3. It is two halves of a single product. Babelstitch actually did a post where she bought JUST the instructions and tried to use them like they are a standalone product, without the specific Holi Loli pattern. It's a funny post.

But, if "tutorial for this specific bow" is a standalone product, having another tutorial out there for this bow should threaten them about as much as there being other headbow patterns. Do my headbow patterns (x) (x) that I provide for free potentially bring traffic away from this Holi Loli headbow pattern? Probably, but I still recommend buying this pattern, because hers offer something that mine do not. Her bow pattern is better than mine, so you should buy it.

If "tutorial for this bow" is a standalone product, it competes with hers in the same way my headbow patterns do. If her tutorial provides things that mine does not, and it can prove its worth as a $10 product, then it should still sell despite my own, separate, standalone (free) product.

I can go into more things, like how the headbow pattern listing really heavily permits people to believe they're buying instructions, and how there's no refunds on digital downloads which forces people who weren't paying attention to buy the instructions just to complete their project, how the low price and weird wording on the listing makes it very easy to share and favorite this pattern and drive more publicity to the shop even if people aren't buying the pattern, etc. However, if y'all want me to go on a rant about something along those lines, you actually want me to review the Kliot loom by Lacis because that's an ACTUAL CONSPIRACY and this is a sewing tutorial.

So, in the end BUY THE PATTERN BECAUSE THAT PATTERN IS REALLY GOOD. I'M REALLY GLAD THAT I BOUGHT IT AND I'VE MADE FIVE HEADBOWS WITH IT ALREADY. and buy the tutorial if you think it'll help you, but don't get trapped into buying the pattern because you thought there were instructions and there weren't.

Months, this art project has been in the works for months. If I look back at the text logs, it was all the way back in May, this year, when I started trying to crack down on it. Part of why it took so long was because I felt so drained in a lot of different ways. But, hey better late than never, right?

Normally, I have more things to say in this section, but because this set was stretch out over months I don’t remember everything off the top of my head. So, I’ll just go with a few bullet points that come to mind: •I know I started out wanting to do something more abstract but that went out the window when I started drawing. What can I say, I prefer defined art. I did try there at the beginning, though, I promise. •Sam’s green because first of all he’s dreaming of the sewer he’s trapped in (and sewers to me mean green atmosphere) and it’s supposed to be otherworldly/strange because it’s a dream. I promise it had nothing to do with the Grinch or Kermit. Though that was a funny happenstance. •The heart was originally going to be red surrounded in flames, which was closer to what the text described, but then I saw a reference of a heart on fire that looked like it was lit up like the sun. Which I think still fits the dream’s description still. So, I switched tracks on that part because that was like bright sun heart. •Originally what the blue and orange flames description meant just a single flame with the blue color as a core and the orange flame at the tips. Think of the type of flame you’d see on the stove top. But I thought it meant separate orange and blue flames, and once I had that idea it was hard to accept in my head. Plus, a lot of references of things on fire didn’t incorporate that combination. So, that’s how I end up doing what I did. •The hardest part was probably trying to figure out the heart/fire, runner up or alternatively how to draw an open mouth Sam. Thank god for the many Jared/Sam pics easily accessible out there. •I’ve been listening to a lot of Doja Cat lately, the main song was the one I linked below but really it was the hour long vid version, several times. •I made the title card last because I completely forgot about it till the end. So, I quickly made it mostly within a day. My favorite part about the process for the title card was deciding the font with author. We tried out four, one was a joke font, but I said I was going to try them all out and I did.

Bonus:

These pieces just show a little bts of the art. I removed most of the fire and the blood and took away the black filter so you can see the foundation of the work that was built upon. The fire covers up some of Sam’s face and I was proud of some of those profiles which I had to sacrifice for the fire in the final pieces, lol.

Okay, for some reason I think Tumblr ate my original Cass synesthesia post describing what color she sees for some people so I'll repost it here.

Rapunzel's color is a REALLY vibrant purplish-pink; almost like strawberry soda that's just a little too sweet

Eugene's color is a gross-looking greenish-yellow. It's weirdly dark, but still vibrant enough to be seen clear as day and it annoys Cass to no end

The Captain's color is burgundy, and to Cass, it feels kinda like warm sparkling apple cider. Something comforting and homey

Lance's color is a rich yellow; kinda like warm honey

Varian's is a really beautiful looking sky blue, and it feels really calming to Cass

All the guards have varying shades of red and reddish-brown

Most of the handmaidens have shades of purple, except for Crowley who has a dark green that feels a little like campfire smoke

The Pug Thugs all have shades of brown and gray

Shorty's color is ALLLL over the place. Cass really hates it

Frederic's is a deep navy blue, and it's sorta calming like Varian's blue is but it still feels ominous

Arianna's is similar to Rapunzel's, except it's much pinker than it is purple and it's not nearly as bright

Calliope's is the most fluorescent, bright, migraine-inducing neon yellow you can possibly imagine

Feldspar's is a vibrant orange, that feels all fizzy and bubbly like a soda

Monty's is a lime green

Nigel's is a faded pinkish red

A lot of the Vardarans have very dark colors that almost look black to Cass. The brightest ones are Vex's dirty orange and Quaid's mustard yellow, and even then they're still hardly that bright

Magic or magical beings can actually seriously affect Cass's synesthesia, making colors lighter or even nonexistent. Zhan Tiri had no color until long after she regained a physical form.

Because of the new headcanon living in my head rent-free that the Brotherhood are also werewolves, the Brotherhood had fairly light colors. Edmund is light purple, Adira is light red, Hector is light green, and Quirin is a light blue (similar to Varian's, but it looks more faded blue than actual light blue. Like, kinda blueish gray)

Gothel and Tromus had dark purple and dark red respectively, but it was VERY faded. Cass almost couldn't see it if she wasn't looking hard enough

Rapunzel's color became a couple shades lighter once her hair grew back. It actually took Cass a while to notice because the change was so subtle

Lady Caine's color is almost the same as Gothel's, except it's not remotely faded. It's really dark but still vibrant. In a weird way, Cass finds it comforting
