The River of Consciousness by Oliver Sacks
These posthumously published essays range from psychiatry to plagiarism to near-death experiences
One March in the mid 1990s I checked into a hotel in Helsinki. I dropped my bag on the floor and, wondering what Finnish daytime television was like, switched on the TV. A darkened room with a dining table came into focus, and around it were six people having a conversation. To my surprise, all were speaking English, then a face I knew filled the screen – it was Oliver Sacks. Then another, Stephen Jay Gould, and another, Daniel Dennett. I had books by all three. It was snowing outside, and Helsinki seemed suddenly less inviting; I sat down on the bed and began to watch.
A Dutch TV company had assembled these men, together with Freeman Dyson, Stephen Toulmin and Rupert Sheldrake, for the round-table finale of a documentary series on science and the meaning of life. The series, A Glorious Accident, didn’t seem to have invited any women to take part but even so I watched it to the end – three hours later. The participants’ areas of expertise were diverse: biology, physics, palaeontology, neuroscience, philosophy. As the only practising clinician, Sacks made perceptive and valuable contributions – and was clearly having fun.
Sacks died nine years ago in August 30, 2015. A melanoma of the eye, diagnosed nine years earlier, had recurred and metastasised to his liver. The New York Times had referred to Sacks as the “poet laureate of medicine”, and carried an obituary that said that neurological conditions were for him occasions “for eloquent meditations on consciousness and the human condition”. In his last year he put the finishing touches to a memoir (On the Move), and completed some final magazine essays collected soon after his death (Gratitude). In one of his last newspaper pieces he wrote: “I have several other books nearly finished.” We might expect further posthumous essay collections to be on the way.
Millions of Sacks’s books have been printed around the world, and he once spoke of receiving 200 letters a week from admirers. For those thousands of correspondents, The River of Consciousness will feel like a reprieve – we get to spend time again with Sacks the botanist, the historian of science, the marine biologist and, of course, the neurologist. There are 10 essays here, the majority published previously in the New York Review of Books (the collection is dedicated to its late editor Robert Silvers). Their subject matter reflects the agility of Sacks’s enthusiasms, moving from forgetting and neglect in science to Freud’s early work on the neuroanatomy of fish; from the mental lives of plants and invertebrates to the malleability of our perception of speed.
The essay on speed has some characteristic flourishes: of Parkinson’s disease, Sacks writes that “being in a slowed state is like being stuck in a vat of peanut butter, while being in an accelerated state is like being on ice”. He is as good on near-death experiences: “There is an intense sense of immediacy and reality, and a dramatic acceleration of thought and perception and reaction.” Sacks has a Jain-like reverence for insects, and delights in comparative neuroanatomical facts: an octopus may have six times more neurons than a mouse; many plants possess nervous systems that move at a thousandth the speed of our own.
Plagiarism troubled Sacks, and an essay on memory dovetails with one on creativity, examining how someone can copy another’s work through unconscious repatternings of memory. “Memory arises not only from experience,” he concludes, “but from the intercourse of many minds.” He quotes the letters between Mark Twain and Helen Keller on plagiarism, and his own correspondence with Harold Pinter (whose play A Kind of Alaska was inspired by Sacks’s Awakenings). Most of his books are mentioned in passing, and the chosen essays stand as a kind of testament or gazetteer to their range. Reading them, I was reminded of something Annie Dillard said about the essay form: “The essay is, and has been, all over the map. There’s nothing you cannot do with it; no subject matter is forbidden, no structure is proscribed.”
Some of the slighter pieces here suffer from being placed between more substantial work, and in one, only one, Sacks’s argument loses coherence. But even then I was conscious of the great premium he placed on flights of ideas: “If the stream of thought is too fast, it may lose itself, break into a torrent of superficial distractions and tangents, dissolve into a brilliant incoherence, a phantasmagoric, almost dreamlike delirium.”
Sacks was deliriously in love with details – to the irritation of his editors – and he crammed his books with them. When the text couldn’t take any more, he spilled them over to the bottom of the page. It’s in the footnotes that his treasures are often to be found: in a two-page footnote to his essay “Scotoma: Forgetting and Neglect in Science”, Sacks outlines how urgent is the need for reconciliation between psychiatry and neurology, divided now for nearly a century. A “scotoma” is a blind spot in the vision, an area of darkness conjured by irregularities in brain or retinal function:
If one looks at the charts of patients institutionalized in asylums and state hospitals in the 1920s and 1930s, one finds extremely detailed clinical and phenomenological observations, often embedded in narratives of an almost novelistic richness and density ... this richness and detail and phenomenological openness have disappeared, and one finds instead meagre notes that give no real picture of the patient or his world.
Through the course of the 20th century, the US Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (a book conceived to facilitate health insurance billing) has, Sacks insists, impoverished clinical language. “Present-day psychiatric charts in hospitals are almost completely devoid of the depth and density of information one finds in the older charts, and will be of little use in helping us to bring about the synthesis of neuroscience with psychiatric knowledge that we so need.” Earlier in the book he singled out one of the defining moments of that schism, when in 1893 Freud gave up looking for elements of brain pathology that might be relevant to mental health: “The lesion in hysterical paralyses must be completely independent of the nervous system,” Freud wrote, “since in its paralyses and other manifestations hysteria behaves as though anatomy did not exist or as though it had no knowledge of it.”

What is Yahndrall's quirks? What kind of music would Hons listen to?
These are really good questions.
I don’t have anything super specific for Yahn, yet. After Hons blitzes him and Ary repatterns/heals him, Yahndrall loses a lot of who he was previously. Not sure he really has a direction, he’s a shadow of his former self. He’s much quieter, less confrontational, gives ground easy. He’s fairly agreeable to be around, if very reserved, and the team enjoys his occasional company because of that.
I... have no idea what music Hons would listen to. I get the feeling he prefers the music of the cosmos (or nature, if he’s planet side) and he’s not too interested in what material creatures have to offer there. He does a good job ignoring Jarovin’s songs for a while, which is a neigh impossible feat for Locks.

If you can help it, do not allow these people to cut out your womb. Most allopathic Western doctors will always recommend cutting on your body eventually. They are not necessarily "bad" people. It is merely how they were ordained and trained by the larger medical power system and the reptilian entity underlords possessing them.  But the key code for you to remember (that will never be written in those pamphlets at the doctor's office) is that your body is naturally regenerative -meaning- it is designed to heal itself. Try a juice and herbal cleanse for 60 days. Normalize more bitter foods in your life like dandelion in order to repattern and raise the consciousness of your taste buds from obsessively desiring junk, sugar, and greasy gooey foods. A good integrative doctor would recommend cutting out the exhaustive relationships, late nights up, fried foods, mouth-breathing, low self worth habits, smoking, social media scrolling, blue light absorption, and other everyday addictions like caffeine and sugar before cutting on your body. Get your priorities straight and ego in check: you will probably lose some weight in your ass and breasts in order to bring your body into greater harmony. Curate a simple life -one with less clutter, TVs, mold, drama, take out food, and mindless distractions and with connection to sun, nature, and quiet/meditation, excellent music and DNA-ascending, overwhelmingly satisfying, heart-connected sex are worthy bonuses. Be willing to renew your mind and fully feel everything living in your body. Find time for sensuality, to dance, sing, play, and laugh more. What are you grateful for? Write it down everyday to keep your mind focused on what's real. To channel the Goddess and invoke the divine feminine, open heart, open legs, and open throat prayer. Every organ given to us by Source has an intelligence, and in the female body, the womb is the center of that intelligence. If you have already had your womb removed, do not feel discouraged. Begin to learn more about your spiritual/energetic womb. Never feel bad about your choices, but do know that there is a lot more for you to attune into and deeply evolve from.

Here's another Barbiefied Bakugo!
This time with a few colorswaps and a tiny bit smaller!
Original concept by adri_paints over on Tiktok, made for @dejaviolet_ over on Instagram!
Bakugo is made with minky. He sits about 10 inches from the top of the head to the rump. Details are machine embroidered and appliqued. None of the accessories are removable.
This was oddly fun to remake! Oddly because the pattern making process and embroidery file making process ran pretty smoothly! Since all the details were already ironed out, all that was needing to be done as prep was resizing.
Though, one major change was the mask part that comes off the sides of the head. It was resized to fit my largest embroidery hoop; it was literally off by about .5 inches on the sides.... 😭
Luckily I didn't do any off script changes to the original Bakugo that would have had me repattern something from scratch, even the hair pattern was taken from the original. 😊

*jazz hands*
Repatterned my gloves after I compared them to the nice leather ones I got from ren faire. This would not be a bad mock up, but with little time and it just not being a big deal I’m happy with what I have.
I just finished patterning and cutting out my cape, so I hope I’ll have that finished by Saturday so I can spend that whole day focused on his staff and painting the symbols onto the cape lining.

And here's the finished piece! 🪡
Our standard giant dragon tails are tried and tested, and we love the designs our commissioners request. That just makes it even more exciting when a customer wants something even more individualised, like this repatterned striped tail!✨
We've left off the spikes and side feathers as requested, and remade the pattern to allow these stripes along the full length of the tail. 🌈
The final result is this super-bold floor dragger, and we're totally in love with it! 💖

would be sooooo romantic if someone pulled out a midi controller and started performing touchdown turnaround into figures a & b into two weeks in hawaii but for true 2006 authenticity they need to be in an invader zim gir shirt and wearing one of those studded belts. bonus points for it being rainbow studs that they took off and repatterned themselves but some of the clasps broke off in the process so there's random gaps

Making the cat bag: post-game analysis
My thoughts on the project, what I’d change if I made it again and what I wouldn’t.
Leather -- For all that I struggled with making the gussets out of latigo, I'd still choose that over veg-tan. I like the heft of latigo; I like that it's sturdy enough to hold its shape, while still staying flexible. Veg-tan gets very stiff after it's been wet (ie, when you dye it), and then it's a lot of work to soften it back up again so it doesn't wrinkle and crack when you bend it. The molded veg-tan bags and pouches I've made in the past feel less substantial than latigo, less durable, less professional. In my opinion, latigo is worth the extra hassle of the gussets.
(I do wish it were possible to mix and match different leathers -- to do the body and straps with latigo, and the gussets with veg tan -- and if they were getting dyed black that might be possible, but not if you're trying to make them match with literally any other color.)
Latigo does tend have a very flat, unnaturally-even color that is also a giveaway that you’re working with modern leather, so it benefits from layering on some other color. In this case, I used Eco-Flo antiqueing gel in mahogany to stain the edges, and then smeared it around on the leather’s surface to give it some depth and complexity. I like how it came out, and I’d do the exact same thing next time.
Buckle vs magnet -- lol yeeeeeah, if I make this again, I'm going to give it the hidden magnet clasp. Not only does the buckle make access more difficult, but that constant buckling and unbuckling puts a lot of wear and tear on the strap very quickly.
Belt straps -- Perfect, 10/10, no notes. They were designed to be able to fit belts up to 2.25″ wide, and when I wore the bag around for a day, they folded nicely, allowing me to sit down without the bag getting in the way.
Proportions -- This is the biggest one, because the bag came out noticeably more square than the reference pics. I had wanted it to be 6″ tall, and accordingly I made the front/back/gussets 6″, but I didn’t sufficiently account for how the curve of the flap adds height.
Tumblr media
You can see that the front/back/gussets are indeed 6″ tall -- but with the flap, the overall height is nearly 6.75″. So even though repatterning is a pain in the ass, I would drop the sides to 5.25″, and hopefully that would make it 6″ overall.
I’d also widen it at the base, from 7.5″ to 8″ across, because the bag is not currently a very useful size -- with the amount of space the gussets take up on the inside, it's neither wide enough nor tall enough to fit my lawyer's 6.5" cellphone, and I make a point of considering the functionality when I make stuff like this. Phone and wallet is what most people need to carry at cons/renfaires, and so a pouch that can't accommodate those needs isn't going to be terribly useful. The bag is plenty roomy, but in the wrong directions -- it's deeper and taller than it needs to be, but not wide enough.
It also doesn’t need to be 2″ deep. The wooden mold I have (which is actually 1.75″, not 1.5″ as previously stated) is what I’ve used for making the Anders square bag and the Fenris bags, and it is exactly the right thickness for carrying a smartphone and a wallet side-by-side. It’d work fine for the cat bag too.
I think next time I'd try to skive down the thickness of the gussets to make them easier to work with, even though skiving is a fiddly, error-prone pain in the ass if you don't have the machine to do it. Thinner leather would be able to press into the mold better, and ultimately take up less space inside the bag.
So, am I going to make this again?
idk, maybe. I’d give a 50/50 chance, knowing me. I can feel the perfectionist urge to get it completely right this time, and then I could put the pattern/tutorial up for sale. We’ll see. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Hello Hello! And so begins my newest project, TWOK Field Jacket Mark 2 🟥
I've started with repatterning my original pieces. The main things to fix are:
-the front width
-the back and top arm detailing
- angled side seams for more flare
- the pleat under the back pocket
AND width of the shoulder seam- which in turn meant I had to edit my armscye 🙃
With those all fixed with seam allowance added, we are ready to start with sorting out all of the hardware.
This means the front buckle (its actually an old breifcase clasp), the three ball clasps on the front and back pocket, the four big D rings and four of those funky lil connector pieces that go over the straps. (Adding here is the patch for the shoulder, the rank badges and the pips for the upper arm band.)
I have fabric and stabiliser ordered and on its way for next week 😎🖖
