I think you can actually see the mask slipping sometimes, like in this scene right after the return, and considering that Rook oftentimes stays silly so to speak without player's input, I loved leaning into this so much.
Thinking of Rook always having this mask of humor and chillness at all waking moments, but there are these little moments, where the worry and the stress and the fear are shown in a small downturn of the lips, a quiver of the voice, a furrow of the brow, or a nervous laugh. And then their mask is right back on.
The companions joke about how hard it is to read Rook or they comment on how confident they always look. Rook is their leader and sometimes they seem utterly untouchable.
Then they get sent to the Regret Prison. Everyone is obviously terrified and worried for their safety, but they don't imagine Rook being scared. They imagine Rook blazing through the prison, too stubborn and fierce to be kept down. So the only option is to meet them in the middle. Rook has inspired and helped them all so much that they spend those missing weeks working to get them out, because Rook would've done the same for them.
Finally, after weeks of trial and error, they find a tear in the Fade, just big enough to pull Rook out of. When they pull them out, they expect to see Rook exhausted but relieved. They expect a joke or for Rook to tease them for worrying so much. But that's not what they find.
They find Rook, shaken, sobbing, and scared. There is relief in their eyes, but that mask they always wore is gone, worn away by the prison, revealing all the terror and doubt that they tried so desperately to hide.
For the first time in this entire adventure, Rook is the one who needs to be comforted and taken care of. But that's a lie. Rook always needed help. They were just so busy helping the others with their problems that they never allowed themselves to feel the true weight of their emotions and they NEVER allowed their friends to see how fucking fragile they constantly were. How they were always so close to losing themselves. Rook never truly allowed anyone to see them. Not even their lover.
And now, in this moment where they are finally letting out everything they've kept so hidden, the companions rush to their side. Emmrich is checking if they're hurt, Bellara or Lucanis insists on making them food, Taash or Davrin go look for the comfiest blanket they can find(if Davrin is alive, that blanket is Assan), and, if Harding or Neve is there, they calm Rook down enough to where Rook can finally speak without their voice shaking. Rook's love holds them close while the others all sit around Rook and just listen.
Rook never expected anyone to take care of them, that was their job. They're the leader. Helping everyone else with their problems was enough. But as they explain what happened in the Regret prison, and realize that their friends don't judge or see them any less, Rook feels this profound sense of catharsis. Before Tearstone Island, all the companions set out to deal with their own problems and worries, with Rook by their side, and now each one is here for Rook as they finally let that mask fall and allow themselves to feel everything.
#THERES A REASON THE HUMOR OPTION IS A MASK#< ya#my initial idea of renzo ended up synchronizing perfectly with this role of rook#who's always joking and upbeat and '/gripping sink/ but i stay silly :3'#the horrors persist but i stay silly#he's also an assassin so he's pulling a zevran basically#so every moment of weakness when neither being cynical nor 'staying silly' helps is way more important#datv#dav#datv spoilers#oc: renzo#oc: renzo de riva

Challenge accepted!
I was tagged by the Smut Monarch @dragonagegayz to post something I'm proud of, thank you so much!!
This snippet is from a, unposted chapter of "Roads untravelled" from my Crowtales series, in which Alecto De Riva and Lorenzo, her partner-in-arms (and frequent lover) need to do an undercover work in a ball at the Winter Palace, Orlais.
For context: she has just been attacked and saved her life in the last moment. SFW, this time! (but I'll post something not that safe in AO3 REALLY SOON)
I tag my sweets @pixiedurango @nyx-de-riva @okthisway @antivan-sprig & @ezriell. And everyone who wants to do this, PLS TAG ME SO I CAN READ
Alone. That one word made all her senses scream at once and she ran down the stairs. The keep, Renzo had joked with a wink, a conveniently secluded spot one of the maidservants had told him about. Alecto prayed to the entire pantheon of gods that it wasn't the wrong place. She ran to what seemed to be the place. It was indeed a very secluded place, ideal for amorous encounters... or to commit crimes. A solid wooden door blocked his way. It had to be there.
She listened behind the door, there were two people talking, laughing softly, though she couldn't make out what about. At least one of the voices sounded like his. The door was locked, but she wasn't going to waste time forcing it: a spell caused it to burst into flames. On the other side was her companion, unharmed thanks to the Maker, accompanied by the woman with intense green eyes who was part of the service (Isabelle was her name, maybe? She did not care). They both looked dumbfounded, but Lorenzo looked at her with extreme anger at the unwanted interruption
“Get away from him now!” Alecto shouted at her, to no avail.
Lorenzo seemed furious “What the fuck is wrong with you, aren't you ever satisfied with fucking me every fucking time I get to be with someone who isn't you?”
Although it was the first time he had yelled at her, Alecto would have volatilized him if she could. Isabelle glared at them, but didn't say a word. She had too little on her for a concealed weapon (at least one she could carry with dignity). It had to be something else. There had to be something else.
“Fucking asshole” Alecto muttered between her teeth, scanning the room.
Two wine glasses rested on a tray, untouched. She nudged him away and sniffed them gently, not failing to notice the alarmed expression in those green eyes. Of course that was it, dammit, there was no other way to be sure to neutralize such a big man. Alecto picked one up without further regard and held it up to the maid's eye level.
“You” She snapped at her” You’re going to drink this right now.”
“But what the fuck -?” Lorenzo began to protest.
“I was just attacked in my chamber, a place where I was conveniently alone.” Alecto replied without looking at him, then she addressed the maid “That was the idea, wasn't it? Get the bulky one out of the way and leave the one you thought was less of a problem alone.”
Isabelle reddened and stammered, unable to articulate two meaningful words. Lorenzo looked at Alecto in disbelief, but she was too angry to take it easy.
“This” She shook the glass again before the woman's terrified eyes. Alecto lowered her tone of voice: she no longer yelled, but spoke so threateningly that Lorenzo himself was afraid of what she might do. “Trust me when I tell you that what I will do to you if you don't take it is going to hurt a hell of a lot more.”
“You're being a bloody paranoid; all you're doing is bullying someone who has nothing to do with your imaginary conspiracies. And screwing me a good fuck, while you're at it.”
“Or maybe you are, as usual, thinking with your dick” Replied her, as she rummaged in one of the hidden pockets of her skirt. She found what she was looking for in a few seconds, a small vial gifted from Viago, and let out a grunt “Maker’s fucking blood.”
Without a second thought and to the astonishment of the two people around, Alecto shoved the entire contents of the glass into her mouth, grabbing a surprised Isabelle by the back of the neck and forcing her to kiss her for a few seconds. Immediately after, she pushed her away, spat and drank the liquid contained in the vial she was holding in her hand in one gulp. The girl turned pale, with panic in her emerald eyes, and began almost immediately to cough up blood, which also flowed abundantly from her nose and eyes. She collapsed without a word.
Alecto wiped with the back of her hand the drop of blood that fell to her lips and directed a venomous look at Lorenzo, who was staring at the corpse without knowing what to say.
“You're welcome” She was too furious even to continue being there, so she turned and stormed out of the room.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu pt.2
Upholding the premise that most of the advantage of a larger, stronger opponent comes from superior reach and more powerful strikes, both of which are mitigated when grappling on the ground, Brazilian jiu-jitsu emphasizes getting an opponent to the ground in order to use ground fighting techniques and submission holds involving joint-locks and chokeholds. A more precise way of describing this would be to say that on the ground, physical strength can be offset or enhanced by an experienced grappler who knows how to maximize force using mechanical advantage instead of pure physical strength.
BJJ permits a wide variety of techniques to take the fight to the ground after taking a grip. While other combat sports, such as Judo and Wrestling almost always use a takedown to bring an opponent to the ground, in BJJ one option is to "pull guard." This entails obtaining some grip on the opponent and then bringing the fight or match onto the mat by sitting straight down or by jumping and wrapping the legs around the opponent.
Once the opponent is on the ground, a number of maneuvers (and counter-maneuvers) are available to manipulate the opponent into a suitable position for the application of a submission technique. Achieving a dominant position on the ground is one of the hallmarks of the BJJ style, and includes effective use of the guard (a signature position of BJJ) position to defend oneself from bottom (using both submissions and sweeps, with sweeps leading to the possibility of dominant position or an opportunity to pass the guard), and passing the guard to dominate from top position with side control, mount, and back mount positions. This system of maneuvering and manipulation can be likened to a form of kinetic chess when used by two experienced practitioners. A submission hold is the equivalent of checkmate in the sport, reflecting a disadvantage which would be extremely difficult to overcome in a fight (such as a dislocated joint or unconsciousness).
Renzo Gracie wrote in his book Mastering Jiu-jitsu:
'The classical jujutsu of old Japan appeared to have no common strategy to guide a combatant over the course of a fight. Indeed, this was one of Kano's most fundamental and perceptive criticisms of the classical program.' Maeda not only taught the art of judo to Carlos Gracie, but also taught a particular philosophy about the nature of combat developed by Kano, and further refined by Maeda based on his worldwide travels competing against fighters skilled in a wide variety of martial arts.[28]
The book details Maeda's theory as arguing that physical combat could be broken down into distinct phases, such as the striking phase, the grappling phase, the ground phase, etc. Thus, it was a smart fighter's task to keep the fight located in the phase of combat best suited to his own strengths. Renzo Gracie stated that this was a fundamental influence on the Gracie approach to combat, these strategies were further developed over time by the Gracies and others, and became prominent in contemporary MMA.
BJJ is most strongly differentiated from other martial arts by its greater emphasis on ground fighting. Commonly, striking-based styles spend almost no time on groundwork. Even other grappling martial arts tend to spend much more time on the standing phase. It is helpful to contrast its rules with kodokan judo's greater emphasis on throws, due to both its radically different point-scoring system, and the absence of most of the judo rules that cause the competitors to have to recommence in a standing position. This has led to greater time dedicated to training on the ground similar to that of Kosen Judo, resulting in enhancement and new research of groundwork techniques by BJJ practitioners.
Along with BJJ's strengths on the ground comes its relative underemphasis of standing techniques, such as striking. To remedy this comparative lack, there is an emphasis on take-downs and cross-training between BJJ, wrestling, judo, and sambo, as well as striking based arts such as boxing, karate, taekwondo, Muay Thai, and kickboxing.
Sport BJJ focus on submissions without the use of strikes while training allows practitioners to practice at full speed and with full power, resembling the effort used in a real competition. Training methods include technique drills in which techniques are practiced against a non-resisting partner; isolation sparring, commonly referred to as positional drilling, where only a certain technique or sets of techniques are used, and full sparring in which each opponent tries to submit their opponent using any legal technique. Physical conditioning is also an important part of training at many clubs. The Gracie family focuses on real world applications for BJJ. While other businesses and companies tend to focus on the sporting aspect of BJJ, the Gracie's maintain a strict way of training that is primarily self-defense. They will often run reflex development drills in which one person is surrounded by a circle of other students who will attempt to attack the defending student, who in turn must defend themselves using "street" Jiu-jitsu techniques. The student will often be unable to see the aggressor to simulate an attack that they weren't expecting.
In side control, the practitioner pins his opponent to the ground from the side of his body. The dominant grappler lies across the opponent with weight applied to the opponent's chest. The opponent may be further controlled by pressure on either side of the shoulders and hips from the practitioner's elbows, shoulders, and knees. A wide variety of submissions are initiated from side control. It is also referred to as the side mount. Additionally, the typical side mount increases opportunity for the dominant grappler to advance to a more dominant and less used type of side control known as the mounted crucifix position. In this position, the dominant grappler has his body at the very top of the opponent's torso, one arm controlled between both of the top grappler's arms, and the other arm trapped between the legs. This position is most used in MMA as it allows the dominant fighter to strike whilst taking away their opponents defence. Submission options are limited however and so this position is rarely used in BJJ competition. Variants of the side control include Twister Side Control (popularized by Eddie Bravo), Brazilian Crossbody, Kesa Gatame, "Wrestler Pin" and knee mount.
In the Guard, the practitioner is on his back controlling an opponent with his legs. The practitioner pushes and pulls with the legs or feet to upset the balance and limit the movements of his opponent. This position comes into play often when an opponent manages to place the practitioner upon his back and the practitioner seeks the best position possible to launch counter-attacks. This is a very versatile position from which the BJJ practitioner can attempt to sweep (reverse) the opponent, get back to the feet, or apply a variety of joint locks as well as various chokes.
The three main types of guard are Closed Guard, Half Guard, and Open Guard.
In closed guard, the bottom grappler has his legs around the opponent's trunk, and ankles closed together to provide control and a barrier to escaping the position. The closed guard is a very powerful guard seen often in MMA style tournaments because of amount of control it gives the bottom fighter and lack of necessity for grips to control top opponent and block his strikes. This guard allow many setups for submissions such as jointlocks and chokes as well as great opportunities for reversing the opponent into the very dominant fully mounted position.
In the open guard, the legs are not hooked together and the bottom grappler uses his legs or feet to push or pull in a more dynamic fashion. There are many variations of open guard with distinct names and positioning including the Butterfly Guard, De La Riva Guard, X-Guard, Spider Guard, Lapel Guard, and even the newly emerging Worm Guard made popular by Keenan Cornelius. Butterfly guard is when the bottom grappler brings his legs up and feet together against the inner thighs of top opponent. The name is derived from the resulting butterfly wing shape. Butterfly guard increases both space to maneuver and the ability counter the opponent with the shins or arches of the feet against the competitor's inner thighs.
In the half guard, one of the top grappler's legs is controlled by the bottom grappler's legs, blocking the top opponent from achieving the side control or full mount positions. There is also a variant of Half-Guard called 50/50 Guard, which consist of each opponent usually in sitting positions with one of their legs hooking the same leg of their opponent in a mirrored fashion. This position is called 50/50, because neither opponent has a distinct advantage with both sides have the same possibilities of sweeps and attacks.
The majority of submission holds can be grouped into two broad categories: joint locks and chokes. Joint locks typically involve isolating an opponent's limb and creating a lever with the body position which will force the joint to move past its normal range of motion.[27] Pressure is increased in a controlled manner and released if the opponent cannot escape the hold and signals defeat by submitting. Opponents can indicate submission verbally or they can "tap out" by tapping the opponent or the mat. (Tapping one's own body is dangerous because the opponent may not be able to tell if his or her opponent is tapping.) A choke hold, by disrupting the blood supply to the brain, can cause unconsciousness if the opponent does not submit soon enough.
A less common type of submission hold is a compression lock, where the muscle of an opponent is compressed against a hard, large bone (commonly the shin or wrist), causing significant pain to the opponent. These types of locks are not usually allowed in competition due to the high risk of tearing muscle tissue. This type of lock often also hyper-extends the joint in the opposite direction, pulling it apart.
While many joint locks are permitted, most competitions ban or restrict some or all joint locks involving the knees, ankles, and spine. The reason for this is that the angles of manipulation required to cause pain are nearly the same as those that would cause serious injury. Joint locks that require a twisting motion of the knee (called twisting knee locks or twisting knee bars, or techniques such as heel hooks, and toe holds) are usually banned in competitions because successfully completing the move nearly always results in permanent damage that requires surgery. Similarly, joint manipulations of the spine are typically barred due to the inherent danger of crushing or mis-aligning cervical vertebrae. Leglocks are allowed in varying degrees depending on skill level, with the most prominent BJJ tournaments typically allowing only the straight ankle lock and muscle stretching submissions such as the banana split at white through purple belt, with the kneebar, toehold, and calf slicer submissions being permitted at brown and black belt. Most competitions do not allow heel hooks, which are considered to be exceptionally dangerous to competitors.
However, most joint locks involving the wrist, elbow, shoulder or ankle are permitted as there is a great deal more flexibility in those joints and those locks are safe to use under tournament conditions. Joint locks include Armbars, Kimuras, Americanas, straight-arm lock, Omoplata, and other shoulder locks.[32] Also, some fighters practice moves whose sole purpose is to inflict pain upon their opponent, in the hope that they will tap out. This includes driving knuckles into pressure points, holding their opponent's head in order to tire out the neck (called the "can opener" or kubi-hishigi) and putting body weight on top of the sternum, floating ribs, or similarly sensitive bones. These moves are not true submission moves; they are generally only used as distractions mostly in lower levels of competition. They are avoided or aggressively countered in middle to upper levels of competition.
Chokes and strangles (commonly referred to as "air chokes" and "blood chokes") are common forms of submission. In BJJ, the chokes that are used put pressure on the carotid arteries, and may also apply pressure to the nerve baroreceptors in the neck. This kind of choke is very fast acting (if done properly) with victims typically losing consciousness in around 3–5 seconds. In contrast, an air choke (involving constriction of the windpipe) can take up to two minutes, depending on how long the person can hold their breath, and may cause serious damage to the throat.

One of the things we focus on heavily is sequencing, both offensively and defensively. In this reverse De La Riva series it shows the counter sequence where I am trying to pass the halfguard by stepping up(one of our preferred ways to negate and pass the halfguard). My training partner @sophielussenburg immediately responds by going to reverse DLR and using the lapel to control a stronger and heavier opponent therefor slowing down or nullifying the pass completely. She now can set up submission and sweep attacks without any hesitation. #renzogracie #renzograciebjj #renzogracieholland #renzograciehamburg #renzograciekiel #renzograciebottrop #renzograciekaterini #bjj #bjjgirls #bjjkids #bjjfamily #bjjlifestyle #bjjempowerment #mma #boxing #muaythai #kickboxing #grappling #focus #hardwork #itaintfunifyoudontsmile #breda #hamburg #kiel #bottrop #katerini (at Renzo Gracie Holland) https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvb6lwEgO6R/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=nfs02qo1oxy
