Remote Simultaneous InterpretationÂ
Remote Simultaneous Interpretation (RSI) is a groundbreaking technology that is revolutionising the way we communicate across languages. RSI allows interpreters to deliver real-time translations from remote locations, eliminating the need for them to be physically present at events. This opens up possibilities for multilingual communication, allowing organisers to reach a wider audience and participants to engage with content in their own language. RSI offers numerous benefits for organisers, including reduced costs associated with travel and accommodation, a wider pool of qualified interpreters, and the ability to provide interpretation for multiple languages simultaneously.
For participants, RSI provides convenience by allowing them to access interpretation services from anywhere in the world, particularly for those unable to travel or living in areas with limited access to interpretation services. This allows participants to focus on the content without worrying about understanding the speaker's language.
RSI has the potential to foster greater understanding and collaboration between people from different cultures, allowing everyone to participate fully in multilingual events. It is particularly well-suited for various applications, such as conferences, webinars, business meetings, medical appointments, educational courses, government proceedings, legal proceedings, religious services, and cultural events. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, the demand for RSI is expected to continue growing.

âGoing Nativeâ trope and idealizing the âother worldâ in The Owl House
Iâm surprised that Luzâs obsession with becoming a witch wasnât ever seen as offensive by anyone on the Isles. Like the witches on the boiling isles are shown to be born that way and itâs kinda odd how Luz shows up with her own biases and preconceived notions about witches and immediately applies them to Eda and others.
Itâs like someone showing up to a remote village only having read about the people but having simultaneously romanticized their culture. Maybe itâs my sociology/anthropology major brain interpreting it that way lmao but thatâs a big no no when it comes to interacting with another culture.
I know Eda tells her sheâs wearing a dirty traffic cone on her head in the second episode when she dresses up in the stereotypical witch attire. But other than that, I donât recall her getting much flack for her behavior. (Unless weâre including Amity saying sheâs not a witch but I feel like that was more about Amityâs personal gripe with Luz)
I think this is an example of the âgoing nativeâ trope where the protagonist fully immerses themselves in the new world that theyâve been thrust into. Think Anne Boonchuy in Amphibia (specifically her connection to Wartwood) or even more so, Jake Sully becoming one of the Naâvi in Avatar. However, I think TOH is an underdeveloped example of the trope because the showâs narrative barely examines Luzâs journey from outsider to respectable member of the Boiling Isles.
Basically, Luz encountered such little obstacles when it came to being accepted in the isles and I feel like that was so unrealistic. Itâs like no one cares that sheâs a human at all. Itâs completely different from how Anne was treated in Amphibia. She was considered a monster for most of season one, which was funny, but also interesting because it made her character development stand out all the more when the townspeople eventually considered her one of their own.
I guess what bothers me is that the show didnât really demonstrate Luz earning her position in the boiling isles, which I feel like is important when it comes to considering oneself part of a culture that has been stereotyped and put down. And especially since she ended up being their savior against Belos.
Plus, Luz treating their everyday lives like a fantasy come true feels sorta icky. I feel like that was okay at first, but I never got the feeling that the novelty ever wore off. At some point, Luz shouldâve began to acknowledge the boiling isles as just another place and not some fantasy world where she could escape from reality.

the real problem with The Silmarillion is that the creative sandbox is SO big, from the literal world map to the many-millennia timeline to the characters who are half historical figure constructed from 6 different half-contradictory drafts, half mythical archetype, and donât even get me STARTED on the theological philosophy⌠that there is NO chance anyone else will remotely properly write the fic in your head. In other fandoms, I can be pretty sure that at least the people in the carefully chosen 12-person discord server I belong to all have the same fic in their heads that we jammed together at 2am, with the same interpretations of character and theme which weâve debated and discussed at length. But The Silmarillion? You can spend 3 hours discussing a single character in like a 5-year period and walk away completely happy with shared headcanons BUT SIMULTANEOUSLY certain that their interpretation of the character is fundamentally different than yours, such that any fic they write would suffer from notable if not severe âhe would not fucking say thatâ disorderâŚand that both your and their interpretations are completely reasonable reads of the text, so you canât even be mad.
So you HAVE to write ALL your own fic or itâs AGONIZING.
#the silmarillion#tumblr give me polls so I can ask my audience what they most want to read#so I can focus on something instead of just having wildly tonally different plot bunnies bouncing around my head CHALLENGE#me eight months ago: why do so many people write long elaborate return to valinor fics? itâs gets saccharinely samey surely#me now: I want my blorbos to get A chance to live happily ever after but the nuances of their many characterizations and relationships#as well as changes in elvish society culture and technology; the literal effects of the Oath; the attitudes of the Valar#the involvement and/or existence of certain OCs; and the balance of tragedy joy seriousness humor cynicism and hope must all be CORRECT or I#will at best be ANTSY

It really is strange how Edelstans simultaneously dig hard into people that don't agree with their specific interpretation of 3H to the point of being happy they manage to drive those people away... and be so upset and baffled that people become generally disinterested/actively hostile towards 3H content.
If folks get repeatedly driven out of a fandom, and that group of people repeatedly calls anyone who disagrees with their specific interpretation of 3H stupid/illiterate/"acting in bad faith"/sexist/racist/homophobic/etc., and it is repeatedly done by a group of people who insist that 3H's fandom problem is a "both sides" thing, with all of this being dragged into spaces that have nothing to do with 3H, well... obviously people are then going to start to dislike interacting with either 3H in general or its fandom in particular?
Edelstans are the ones spreading the idea that 3H's fandom in totality is shit. They keep trying to make their hands look cleaner than they are by claiming that everyone else's hands are just dirty as/even dirtier than theirs. Of course people who are unaware of everything are going to then assume that everyone's hands are dirty, thus making people not exactly want to shake hands with anyone.
Like, really now. What did they think was going to happen when they directly go after fanartists/fanfic writers who create/say things that go against the Approved Edelstan Status Quo, to the point that a non-zero amount of these creators just up and leave social media entirely? Or after they nitpick every single Disapproved Post and then lie about the post's OP? Or after it becomes a consistent pattern that people who even remotely disagree with Edelstans' opinions are always, without fail, buried with insulting and harassing anons? Or after they're shown time and time again to defend their worst actors with "well their/our victims deserved it because they said a 3H opinion we didn't agree with"? Or when they say that everyone does this shit in 3H's fandom except for them (which is either not believed because it's demonstrably untrue or is actually believed and now those people think the overwhelming majority of 3H's fandom is filled with shit)? Or when they drag 3H discourse into literally actually everything no matter how unrelated?
That with less fandom creators within the fandom space they'd get more content? That harassing and insulting people and accusing them of being this-and-that bigot is going to magically "correct" their minds into seeing The One Truth about 3H? That people are going to just look over all the shit they did just because they allocate the blame of their action on all of 3H's fandom? That people would like 3H more if they constantly remind people of the inarguable worst thing to come from 3H? That this would help 3H's general perception?
Fuckin' no, of course that's just going to make everyone fuck off from 3H. And would you look at that, a shit ton of people have fucked off from 3H since everything has been swept under a "well it'sth a bolth thides ithue tho what can ya do?" rug. And it's been swept under that rug by pretty much the only people who are pulling this shit, who then get shocked - utterly gobsmacked! - that that made them look bad too. That crying "both sides!" included themselves too and not just the people they've been harassing. That saying that the entire fandom is bad everywhere made the entire fandom look bad everywhere.
If Edelstans are really so upset that no one talks about 3H positively anymore, then maybe they should stop being the reason no one likes 3H anymore. Just a thought
#edelgard discourse#just to be safe#like I'm sorry the other parts of the fandom are of course not perfect and should ALSO be called out when they pull shit#but NO ONE is as bad as Edelstans as a group (in 3H's fandom). like. objectively#I say this as someone who is ALSO sad to see 3H become such a heated topic:#it's honestly annoying as hell to see them bitch and moan about how nobody seems to want to talk about 3H anymore#cuz like I'm sorry you do NOT get to whine about people leaving your house after you forcefully pushed them out#like this is obviously what YOU wanted!! a fandom space that is bereft of anyone you disagree with!!#if that means that the fandom is way more empty of new art maybe that says something about YOU and the people YOU wanted to be around you#maybe no one likes y'all because y'all are insufferable and not because y'all like a certain set of pixels and lines on a screen. perhaps#''they hate us because we like Edelgard'' actually it's the harassment and open sexism and victim-blaming and superiority + victim complexe#the entitlement the refusal to ever admit you're wrong about literally anything the dogpiling#the never-ending need to remind people of discourse they want to move away from#and about a million other fuckin' things#simply stop being the problem you're complaining about

Chris and Derek are a goated duo
I feel like we - if you think the same of course - were robbed of a very powerful and amazing duo - just so you know I'm gonna analysis both characters simultaneously and how they evolved be the two faces of the same coin.
Character analysis:
Both Derek and Chris have a strong sense of justice and duty despite the way they showed it in the early seasons and have great strength in their own fields, that be in combact with weapons or claws.
They are both very family-guided or have a lot of interest in their own families, that being staying in the family business or fighting for their own family and pride.
They both ends up being the only one left - in a generalize measure - of their own families/clans and brings changes to their own after being faced with another prospective that 'lets everyone lives'. And they are both willing to take the risk - whatever it might be - to save others' while being already severely injured.
Both have being 'teachers' to their respective 'young ones' and did fairly well somehow. Chris had Allison and she turned out to be very strong and leader-like, while derek had Isacc, Boyd and Erica and despite the fact two of them died, Derek managed to still teach them something rather valuable about being werewolves.
How they evolved to 'the coin':
throughout the seasons they ends up being the only one they can rely onto when something new comes up or when they need to get information or help to deal with something.
And don't get me wrong, they have other people too, but you remeber it too that Chris specificly went to find Derek in the middle of Brazil and was the only one who remotely knew something about Derek?
Also, example of this is when they were talking about the nogitsune while being imprisoned at the police station, they share their opinions about what to do with Stiles while possessed and despite having different povs they ends up working on it together, especially because they both wanted to save a life and not take one more.
And as they both were the 'bad guys' at the start of the show they surely did a turn around and became some of the 'best guys' who protects people whenever is needed, no questions asked.
Chris Arget passed from hunting down supernatural creatures to helping them killing the actually bad ones, and not killing regardless of being guilty or innocent of any crime.
Derek Hale went from ripping people's throats out almost without a second though on the matter, caring only about power and building a pack for himself, to actually caring for the people he ends up with and not caring about being the Alpha of the situation.
And so, they are opposite yet the same, their willpower leads them the same way but along different paths, they want the same things but try to achive them in two distant ways, they have the same start - as the 'bad one' to someone - but ends up regaining people's respect and love.
Most of the time, this 'two face of the same coin' has a bad interpretation, but I don't think it does right now. If the coin has to faces, no matter how different the faces are, how opposite they might be, they are still part of the same coin. They have the same roots just different branches, maybe different leaves but same fruits.
You might be doing something one way and I might be doing it the other, but if our goal is the same they we are part of the same thing deep down, casue what we are looking for and trying to achive is the same. We are just two different people, and the same goes for opinions, idea, ways of being/working/expressing yourself.
And sometimes you might need someone who does things differelty than you, despite having the same goal, cause maybe what you are failing to understand is what they are the best at and viceversa, so you need the other half of the information to find the solution.
Lastly:
If Chris is willing to kill to protect even if it means killing someone you also care for, then Derek is willing to take the risk, even only upon himself alone, to get back the people he loves.
The difference is: Chris is willing to make a sacrifice, Derek is willing to be it.
(almost all the time)
The goated duo:
So, I believe they are a goated duo that could easily take down almost anything or anyone if needed, when they worked together. That they evolved to be better almost together since I think they both learned something from one another.
They went from total enemies to best allies and they are both the best at what they do cause they basically saw it all. They hold such strength on their own that if they worked together - which they don't do on the field (from what I can tell from the show and the movie - they could probably hunt down the bad guys and be done with them in a few business days.
They would've been a powerful duo if only they had the time to be it.

Horror Movie of the day: Dracula (1931)
The 1897 Bram Stoker's novel, a well known literary classic: the nefarious vampire who comes from beyond the Carpathians to take over England by settling in Cairfax Abbey, London. A blood eating fiend who is drawn in by the virginal Mina Murray, to then be confronted by her fiancÊ Jonthan Harker and Dr. Abraham Van Helsing. So when Tod Browning was hired to adapt it to the silver screen, from its theatre adaptation nonetheless, the end result became transformative in the world of cinema⌠forever.
Now, it's easy for modern audiences to be desensitized to its lack of violence and campy theatrics, with a performance from Bela Lugosi as the count that has been parodied to death and then some. And yet, over 90 years after it was seen for the first time it's still considered as THE iconic interpretation of the vampire upon which Halloween costumes are based on and from which many lines not found in the novel are imitated. Why is that? The key word is charisma.
Behind the obvious camp, there's something performative if not outright uncanny about the count. Yes, a 6 feet tall vampire who is always staring and cups the sky in his hand like a poorly directed Shakespeare villain can come across as a tad goofy, but he thoroughly sticks out and it's hard to look everywhere else when someone acts so strangely and somehow makes everyone start following his pace, simultaneously a relic of the time yet still captivating, magnetic even.
A pragmatic adaptation that simplifies the story (cutting out Lucy Westenra's suitors entirely, cutting Jonathan's trip Trannsylvania out) this film keeps most of the essentials about the book while optimizing the screen time, while changing the angle to emphasize the rivalry between Dracula and Van Helsing. The end result is moody and atmospheric, with some admittedly hooky effects but hitting just right at many moments.
It's only natural for a movie still worth watching.
Yes, I emphasized Lugosi's performance during the main body of review, but that was honestly warranted: a movie named after its antagonist lives or dies by that performance specifically, and the classically trained Hungarian honestly knocked it out of the park to the point he codified what vampires look like for decades, only horror film legend Cristopher Lee ever coming remotely close to the same leve of iconicity. But reducing the movie's success to JUST Legosi's performance is undermining the effort of the rest of the cast, with Edward Van Sloan's performance as Abraham van Helsing playing a great foil to the count, or Dwight Frye's compelling range as Renfield really selling the madness and tragedy of his character.
But above all, Tod Browning's directorial achievements in what was effectively a new field.
Sure, horror films existed before this one, so did Dracula adaptations even. But this movie had a challenge past ones didn't have to deal with: making horror work with sound. An herculean task he understood better than some people might give him credit for; while archaic to modern eyes with it's nigh total absence of music (including the now awkward use of Tchaikovsky's Swan's Lake as the opening credits theme), finding things like the sound creaking doors used to build tension THIS early in cinema history isn't as self explanatory as it might seem. It required an intuition as to how the soundscape of a situation instinctively affects the emotional state of the viewer.
That isn't to mention that for how shoddy those bats on strings look, the atmosphere of the film still manages to hit the mark. Even fairly goofy facial expressions can be rendered creepy under the right lighting conditions.
But then, there's some other matters about this film, like how the changes to the book have affected the perception of many characters (hitting Mina the hardest by making her JUST the damsel in distress), the fact Lugosi was not the first choice for Dracula and had to fight for it(showing that even back then you had an internal politics conflict in Hollywood), or the existence of a score which was added in later releases and adds to the film's atmosphere.
...or the fact it's actually TWO separate films from from the same script.
As dubbing and putting subtitles to films wasn't a common practice during the 30's, to export this movie to other markets a completely separate version in a different language would have to be made for each. And since Mexico is the immediate neighboring country, a Spanish version was shot at nights on the same sets as the English one, helmed by George Melford.
The end result is a very similar yet also decidedly different movie, lasting over half an hour more, addressing plot points that are either glossed over or shortly talked about, and having more ambitious cinematography, but with acting that doesn't quite match the overall level seen in Brown's effort. Specially poor Carlos Villarias, who was mandated to imitate Lugosi as close as possible and wasn't allowed to make the character his own, remembered only as a pale imitation of the so called original.
Still, a window into two different takes from the same script is a rarity in the world of cinema and well worth looking into.

I find this interpretation of lp Felix as this flawed person who is deeply disturbed but hid it so well he got heavily romanticized as an ideal knight/hero in Obelian history so incredibly charming. Claude being such a terrible ruler that everyone else that lived during his reign and died a violent death ran the chance of being canonized saint by the Obelian church. He was just a kid who pulled himself out of next level lowborness by being pretty and having a knack for slicing off people's heads with his sword. He sucks Claude's dick (literally). He's a massive rule follower and a coward and a cop who hides behind the back of a little girl. He's Claude's personal attack dog and therapy pet simultaneously. He helps Claude kill innocents and dies protecting a tyrant because he doesn't know what else to do! It's what his mommy told him to!! Monolingual boy who keeps getting promoted until he's shaking hands with the King of Arlanta not understanding a single word of what he is saying as he smiles and nods his head in agreement because everyone else remotely competent at their job around him died for looking at Claude the wrong way. Big brother replacement, victim of Claude's incest fetish and no 1 person Claude goes to to project dead people on before Claude realized he has a daughter for a reason.
#wmmap#who made me a princess#sbapod#suddenly became a princess one day#right hand of the Emperor and second most powerful person in Obelia yet I'm sure he never got a single day off for vocation#felix robane#let's not forgot he must have assisted Claude in his torture of the assassins#you don't get the title of the knight of crimson blood for nothing#that boy had issues#and just like Claude he copes with violence but he picks his victims carefully within the bounds of the law#headcanons#claufelix

What's your take on the hockey booktok thing? Since you mentioned it on twt
my initial take would be that all these people scare me so much I don't want to get into it but also people keep messaging me to be like did you know people ship carlando" off the back of it and yes. I did know that.
my understanding of what's happened on booktok, which I absorb any information about only twice a year during whatever version of this is blowing up at the time, is pretty limited. partly because I'm not on tiktok and partly because I can't read. but the crux of it seems to have come down to people writing disgustingly thirsty comments on a hockey player and his wife's posts, regardless of what they were about, somehow feeling empowered to be horny not just on main but in someone's face because of booktok.
that's, clearly, not remotely acceptable. if there are communities of people out there that thirst about me I don't know about them (although the cold tendrils of horror about the Wikifeet page have just gripped me and no, oh god, that isn't the phrase I should've used at all get me out of here) but there are loads of people who fucking hate my guts. that's like, fine, it's their own business; if they keep it on discord or whatever and away from me it doesn't do me any harm. lord knows, I have committed the act of hating and indeed being horny, sometimes simultaneously, when I was at a safe enough distance for none of the subjects to ever know.
this is a thing about fandom. if you post "Max Verstappen looks breedable" on here then he's extraordinarily unlikely to ever see it or probably know what it means. if you comment that on Kelly's instagram posts, even if you don't like her and even if that's for valid reasons, that's very different.
as I gather it, the booktok thing has exploded into RPF in general. which, I gotta say, RPF and sexually harassing a dude and his family are in fact very different things. one has a rich history, both as actual ways of telling history (Anthony and Cleopatra: RPF, Chernobyl: RPF, the god damn Gran Turismo movie is RPF about an uncomfortably large number of people I know IRL and to be fair it looks like it slaps I'm gonna see it) and as a longstanding artform. RPF's history of horny is even extremely longstanding, with obscene RPF being used by both the French and Russian revolutionaries to undermine the concept of royal divinity.
RPF is political because it involves an interpretation of real events and people. and the perspective from which that's written will always be political. RPF can, certainly, be feminist; there's quite a lot of retellings of classical stories that fit this. RPF can, also, be fucking weird horny shit. or terrible man takes. or incredible, tender, queer retellings; Kaz Rowe's graphic novel about real-life surrealist Claude Cahun is an obvious example of the latter. Pride, the film about the miners' strikes and the AIDS crisis, is another.
so yeah, it is a legitimate and recognised form of literature and art and also uhhhh. well. I mean the omegaverse is definitely recognised, legally, in court because of that one case but I don't know that even its fiercest enthusiasts would really be all that keen on describing it. not as like, literature or anything just I think most people would rather literally never have an IRL conversation about that. ever.
I'm not 1000% clear on how carlando got into this but clearly that's broken containment a long time ago anyway. when you had Sky doing love heart interviews 15 races into them being teammates or whatever, there was an obvious amount of gay chicken being played by the producers that frankly, as a queer person in motorsport, I'm a lot more comfortable with the fan version of.
no, obviously, I do not think they are dating - or want to think that tbh - but frequently-queer fans projecting the wish fulfilment of seeing a kinder and more representative world for their desires, in places hidden from the subjects, is a lot less weird than leering, laughed-at dating questions and milk baths. in an ideal world it wouldn't have to be a secret, yearned-for alternative because things would be safe and open enough for there to be real queer stories everywhere but that, unfortunately, is not the one we currently live in.
wish fulfilment and telling stories are not the same things, necessarily. sometimes you tell the stories to remind yourself it's ok to have wishes or to work out what those even are. I don't think there's anything necessarily harmful about what names the characters have in those, provided the line between reality and any real people's privacy is kept.
clearly, with the booktok thing, that's where things went extremely wrong. generally tiktok as a whole seems to have a very odd perception about other people's agency, whether it's pranking videos or like the girl who filmed people peeing at Spa. if you regard everyday people as content opportunities (spoiler: the law does not think this and particularly in the EU you cannot film people without their consent) then I guess it's easy to slide over to seeing an athlete as a target for what I suspect very few of the people doing it recognised as very unpleasant and invasive harassment.
there's nothing wrong with fancying athletes. there's nothing even wrong with sexualising them, provided you respect some boundaries and provided it's not part of the conditions of their working contracts. there's a lot of difference between there being a discord where, idk, people say Mitch Evans is hot (he is, although somewhat implausibly he genuinely does not know this) and sponsors for female tennis players wanting them to wear revealing outfits and stay skinny or teenage girls being encouraged into provocative photoshoots by people who promise them roles, etc. teenage male athletes being pressured into doing things they don't want to yet or maybe at all to prove they're men, queer athletes being forced to hide who they are or repress it entirely.
would it be a little bit odd to find RPF of yourself? yes. I won't lie, I would judge the characterisation. I already do judge that on the frankly very weird things people write about me. you have never seen RPF as strange as the narratives people will make up about you in the comments of an article about hydrogen and frankly those scare me a lot more than whether someone thinks I'd be assigned beta or whatever.
stumbling across something, rather than having explicit sexual fantasies forced into your face, especially on what's your own social media pages where people you know in real life can see them, is very different though. some people who engage with RPF cross lines, whether that's weird conspiracy stuff about girlfriends being faked or stalking people's friends accounts etc.
RPF doesn't inherently cross lines, even when it's public; there's a very interesting interview here with Jann Mardenborough and the guy who plays him in the Gran Turismo movie about, among other things, portraying a fatal crash he was involved in. clearly, Jann is not only aware of but is the executive producer of what's ultimately fiction about himself and there's an ownership there, of course. but some parts of the movie are made up, for sure.
obviously I'm like, the not-very-secret infiltrator here because clearly I am On Tumblr and know what AO3 is. I follow a bunch of people who write fanfic because they also make nice gifs of my favourite blorbos and I like to think we can all make peace with our own boundaries about that kinda thing. also I read every single Shane/Ryan fic in like 5 weeks and honestly, not going to apologise except to myself for persisting with a few that didn't pay off.
but like: you do not have to make RPF or any fandom activity unethical. the way you conduct yourself does that and some people step way out of line.

The Rise of Remote Interpreting Services and Their Benefits
Remote interpreting, also known as video remote interpreting, is a form of interpretation where language services are provided without the need for in-person meetings. This technology-driven approach utilizes video conferencing tools, with interpreters equipped with cameras and headsets, allowing clients to communicate with interpreters through computers or smartphones.

The Big Picture
Vio & Shadow-focused Four Swords Manga Adaptation | Rated G
Chapter 4: Quest Updated
âCan you hear me?â asks the voice of Ganon, projected from some kind of unreachable void. Shadow isnât exactly sure how Ganonâs remote oversight works. All he knows is that Ganon created him, Ganonâs will is truth, and Ganon will appear to him only when the time is right.
Not that Shadow cares, or anything.
âWe can hear you,â sighs Vaati.
âI canât hear you.â
Read the chapter (and very informative author's note!!) on ao3 or under the cut:
Author's Note: Finally, Iâm working on this project again! I encourage you to re-read the previous chapters, because I just did a pretty significant amount of revision. The most notable change is the decision to not use manga dialogue verbatimâIâm still heavily referencing the transcription, but changing some language and phrasing to blend with my own style. Also important to note is the change of Vio, Shadow, Green, Blue, Red, Zelda, and Link Primeâs age, which is now 16 instead of 19. Working so closely with the manga, Iâve concluded that it makes the most sense for them to be around that ageâmature enough to resonate with adults and potentially develop complex feelings, but young enough where itâs still believable that they would speak/act in line with the manga. To me, the True Manga Canon Links are 14-16 in the same way that, like, Katara, Sokka, Princess Azula, and Prince Zuko are ages 14-16. Theyâre not living in a world like ours, attending high school or something equivalent; they have very adult responsibilities, while simultaneously coping with teenage angst and the challenge of developing their own identities. And while Vio and Shadow stand out as the characters least believable as any age younger than 14, I do think the othersâwhile silly in an cartoonish wayâare not as a whole believable as preteens either. Like, Mabel and Dipper Pines are written as unusually clever preteens, and even they still seem younger than Red. Side note: cartoons are not my only frame of reference for media interpretation, but I am writing this specific thing like itâs a cartoon. Ultimately, I think that while I personally prefer writing a more mature interpretation, these characters can only be teenagers in something meant to complement and supplement canon. That said, I still fully intend to expand on the queer subtext between Vio and Shadow. Their canon arc reminds me a lot of the confusing, codependent, and ultimately life-altering relationships queer teenagers often find themselves in. This adaptation will explore Vio and Shadowâs journeys of queer discovery, both literally and allegorically, because thatâs how I personally interpret the manga. Even if youâre not big on shipping these specific characters, I sincerely hope you can respect my interpretation and still find something that resonates. Anyway, I hope you enjoy this very belated update :)
Pure light transports the heroes to a chamber beneath Hyrule Castle. Link has been here beforeâvery recently, in factâbut to Vio it somehow feels new.
âAre you well, heroes?â asks a soft female voice. Vio looks towards the center of the chamber, where a young woman floats trapped inside a magically crystal. She clasps her hands in front of her chest as if to pray.
âThe Blue Maiden!â Red exclaims, his eyes wide.
âDid you save us?â asks Green.
âLink,â says the maiden, âsomething awful has begun. A terrible ordeal. Darkness once again covers Hyrule, just as in times of legend.â
Tell me something I donât know, Vio wants to mutter, but decides not to antagonize the minor deity who probably just saved his life. .
âThe shadow that took us was a phantom hero,â the maiden continues, âcreated by an evil demon.â
Vio perks up at that. The more he learns about that freak, the easier it will be to defeat him.
âIt is a âShadow Link. A dark reflection of you, but more powerful than any mere shadow.â
Vio attempts to process this. How exactly had Shadow Link been created? It couldnât have been a similar process to himself. Vio is a fractured piece of a person, while Shadow Link is a dark reflection of a whole. No wonder heâs more powerful than the four of themâalthough combined, maybe the heroes could still stand a chance.
The maiden sighs, recapturing Vioâs attention. âIt took all my might to send even that small light through the barrier. His power is not yet at its peak. You must stop him before that happens.â
âWeâre no match for him now,â says Red in a defeated slump. âHow can we ever beat him?â
Blue draws his sword. âWeâve gotta smash that barrier first!â
âThat isnât possible right now,â says the Blue Maiden. âThe Four Sword has been cursed by Vaati. You must re-energize it, fill it with Life Force and the curse will be lifted. Then you can defeat the darkness for good.â
The four exchange uneasy glances. Finally, Green speaks up.
âBlue Maiden,â he says, âwhere is Princess Zelda?â
âI donât know,â admits the maiden. âWeak as I am, I canât sense clearly. But I can faintly sense her spirit⌠far, far away.â
Green nods, determined. âSheâs alive. Thatâs enough.â It brings Vio relief, too, that this could all still be undone.
âHold on, Blue Maiden,â says Green. âWeâll be back to save you soon.â
âBe careful, my four heroes.â The maiden closes her eyes tight, as if channeling the little power she has left. âTravel towards the Eastern Sea. I sense another Maiden within the Eastern Temple.â
Vio finds himself nodding, too.
They exit the castle through the dungeons, careful to remain undetected by Shadow Linkâs army of monsters. Eventually they reach a path, which according to the sign leads directly from Castle Town to the Eastern Sea. Vio assumes that itâs meant to be followed by traveling merchants, over the course of days.
Red sighs loudly.
âLosing confidence?â Vio asks, almost playfully,.
âYeah,â says Red, âhowâd you know?â
âBecause I am you.â
Green stares into the distance, filled with determination. âIf Dark Link is our shadow,â he says, âwe need to be better to beat him. Be more like father.â
âYeah,â Vio smirks. âRight now, Iâd give us a 50/50 chance.â
âBut if we restore the sword weâll get stronger!â says Red. âAnd if we can learn some teamworkââ
Blue scoffs, cutting him off. âI donât care what it takes, weâre doing it.â
Greenâs eyes sparkle in the daylight as he addresses his teammates. Vio canât help but feel a little inspired. âThen itâs decided,â their leader announces. âLetâs go!â
âââââââââââââââââ
âYouâre late,â Vaati tells Shadow as he shuts the door behind him. The one-eyed demon waits at the far end of the conference table, as usual, scrutinizing the shade as he plops down into his own seat.
Steadying his heart, Shadow rolls his eyes. Reclines slightly, enough to slam his boots onto the table. Shoots Vaati a self-satisfied grin. âSorry, I was busy. Doing things, in my body.â
Vaatiâs eye narrows. The Wind Mage may now be free in the world of light, but he still lacks a corporeal form.
âYouâre welcome, by the way,â Shadow adds. âFor breaking the seal.â
âDonât congratulate yourself just yet.â
The air in the dark room begins to crackle, an occurrence Shadow immediately recognizes. He removes his boots from the table and stiffens his posture.
âCan you hear me?â asks the voice of Ganon, projected from some kind of unreachable void. Shadow isnât exactly sure how Ganonâs remote oversight works. All he knows is that Ganon created him, Ganonâs will is truth, and Ganon will appear to him only when the time is right.
Not that Shadow cares, or anything.
âWe can hear you,â sighs Vaati.
âI canât hear you.â
âDo you have us on mute?â Shadow asks, helpfully.
Vaati scoffs. âHe just said he canât hear you.â Shadow just shrugs.
âI think I have you on mute,â says Ganon. âHold on, this isâah. Yes, I see.â
Vaati and Shadow lock eyes, unsure who should speak first.
âI still canât hear you,â Ganon repeats, frustrated.
âLord Ganon,â Vaati finally says, âwe are both here.â
âThere you are. Excellent.â
Shadow preens under his approval. âMy Lord, I have good news. The Wind Mage has been successfully freed, and the Four Sword drawn. Princess Zelda is in our clutches. Hyrule Castle has been overtaken by our forces.â
âOur clutches? Our forces?â
Shadow winces. âYours, My Lord.â
Ganon pauses for a moment. Shadow grips the edge of the table. âIt seems you are serving your purpose, Shadow Link.â
Shadow grins. âYou should have seen it, Linkâs father was so fooled. And the four heroesââ
âAre dead?â interrupts Ganon, and Shadowâs heart falls.
âNot⌠as such.â
âExplain yourself, Shadow Link.â
Shadow deliberates each word before it leaves his mouth. âThey had assistance, my Lord. The Blue Maiden, while contained, used her remaining light magic to repel my presence and transport them to safety.â
âI see.â
Shadow braces himself for his creatorâs disapproval.
âBecause the heroes survive,â Ganon says, âthey pose a great danger to you.â
Shadow hangs his head. âIâm sorry, I canât control how Iââ
âYou are not the perfect being I sought to create, Shadow Link. You are inherently flawed, weak to the light.â
And now the heroes know it too, Shadow realizes, ashamed. Despite all of his prior gleeful theatrics, he hadnât even considered acting unbothered by the light. Not when it scared him so much, not when it caught his so off-guard. Pathetic.
âHowever,â continues Ganon, âyour failure is not in your weakness.â
Shadowâs breath hitches. âIt isnât?â
âYour failure is in your admittance of defeat. You have the power of darkness at your disposalâuse it wisely.â
Shadow takes a deep breath and nods. âYes, my Lord.â
âYou will need to travel in darkness to defeat them,â Ganon instructs. âDo not attempt to approach the heroes during the daytime.â
âBut then how am I supposed toââ
âHave patience. Observe. Prevent the four heroes from gaining power, but do not make yourself vulnerable again.â
Shadowâs palms itch. Heâs not a delegator, and patience is not one of his virtues. Thereâs no place for theatricality in this mission. It doesnât sound fun.
âI wonât disappoint you,â Shadow reassures his creator, already plotting ways to disrupt the heroesâ journey. He could still make this fun. He could succeed, despite his weakness. He isnât a perfect creation, but he can still be the next best thing.
Or would he be the next worst thing, considering the evil of it all?
âYour supervision is appreciated,â Ganon tells Vaati. âAnd Shadow Linkââ
âYes?â
âI am⌠proud of what you have accomplished. I look forward to your future successes.â
Shadow breaks out into an almost childish smile. âThank you, my Lord!â
Ganon doesnât respond, but his presence still lingers. Vaati and Shadow exchange a tired glance.
âYou have to end the call,â sighs the Wind Mage. âSir.â
âRight,â says Ganon, admitting no fault of his own. âMeeting adjourned.â
