Our hero, Major John Sheppard is stationed at McMurdo base in Antarctica at the start of the series. We learn that he likes it there. Sheppard himself tells Teyla in Sateda (S03E04): "Well, that [having no social skills] is why I enjoyed flying choppers in the most remote part of my world before all this craziness."
This is what John Sheppard tells us but we learn that what he tells us is not always the truth and certainly not the whole truth.
The alien AI that created a hallucination from Sheppard's own subconscious in Remnants (S05E15) poses him the question: "You're either someone with a death wish or someone running away from something. So tell me: what are you running away from?" Running away to the most remote part of his world, running away to another galaxy.
In fact, he has both been banished to and self-isolated in the most remote part of his world ("You torture yourself every day, John.") due to his "black mark" acquired in Afghanistan. We are never explicitly told what this black mark was, only that it bothered Gen. O'Neill and was something that Dr. Weir could live with. We are left wondering.
While we are shown something of what happened in Afghanistan during the episode Phantoms (S03E09), through the hallucinations from Sheppard's past of him failing to save Capt. Charlie Holland, it isn't until toward the end of the series that we find out what happened through the mirror of a parallel reality in Vegas (S05E19), where alt!Rodney tells us "You were a helicopter pilot in Afghanistan but were dishonourably discharged for disobeying orders and trying to rescue a field medic trapped behind enemy lines. You were shot down โ€“ obviously survived, but unfortunately the crash killed four American soldiers along with eight civilians. You avoided jail time; the record was sealed for various political reasons."
The field medic in the Vegas-verse, one where "infinite variations of our own known reality where alternate versions of you and I play out events", is female; this revealed in a mumbled 'ur' (I didn't even catch it on first viewing even though I knew about the gender swap in advance; it might just as well have been "knew 'em") in alt!Rodney's line: "That field medic โ€“ the one you defied orders to go back and try and rescue. You knew her personally. You were... involved."
This was one of the differences between the two realities, perhaps even the most defining one of them, the point of divergence.
Vegas Sheppard dies to the tune of Johnny Cash's Solitary Man because that's what he was, a recluse (and note that the importance of Johnny Cash was underlined in the episode by Sheppard taking nothing but his poster, the same Johnny Cash poster that our Sheppard had in his quarters for all of the five years, with him once he walked away from his job; it carries weight):
I know it's been done havin' one girl who loved me Right or wrong, weak or strong Don't know that I will, but until I can find me The girl who'll stay and won't play games behind me I'll be what I am
But our Sheppard is not a Solitary Man (he has self-confessedly found something of a family in Pegasus). He's the Man in Black (in fact, he is dressed in black throughout the series even in situations where other fatigues would have made more sense; it is only in the very last episode that we see him in lighter colours):
I'd love to wear a rainbow every day And tell the world that everything's okay But I'll try to carry off a little darkness on my back 'Til things are brighter, I'm the man in black
We know the background. When the series begun, DADT was still in full effect, the franchise had a long-standing co-operation with the USAF, Prop 8 was still several years into the future. The non-normative sexual orientation of an All-American Action Hero was never going to be main-text. Even heterosexual romance between characters was mostly eschewed by the franchise. But damn if the subtext doesn't lay it out thick for us.
There are so many obvious parallels and comparisons in the show that I need to write them down somewhere, and while this is a day late and a dollar short, this fandom could do with some meta. So this marks the beginning of my journey through Stargate Atlantis with an eye on its bisexual protagonist.

@vilrocker400 I think you might be onto something.
Itโ€™s equal parts tragic and doomed. Also I could totally imagine Lu Zhanxing not giving a shit about any curses that may or may not have been placed on Murong Chuyi.
Also with regards to them deserving better Meatbun well and truly screwed both of them with the narrative.
Especially Murong Chuyiโ€ฆ but I might just feel that way because I did not care for Jiang Yexue at all.

Star Wars Analysis - An Eternal Cycle
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"History tells us that, given enough time, all empires will fall. But if we do not also come to understand how and why they rise, we will remain trapped in this cycle forever." (Kin, Beaumont, "Introduction", The Rise and Fall of the Galactic Empire, 35 ABY, page ix)
"This is democracy. It is strange. And it is messy. It's not about getting it right. It's about trying to get it right. Yes, it's a bit chaotic. Certainly we will get some things wrong. The Empire? They cared nothing for democracy. They valued order above everything else. They wanted to be right so badly that anybody who even hinted at getting it wrong or doing it differently was branded the enemy and thrown in a dark prison somewhere. They destroyed other voices so that only their own remained. That is not us. We will not always get it right. We will never have it perfect. But we will listen. To the countless voices crying out across the galaxy, we have opened our ears, and we will always listen. That is how democracy survives. That is how it thrives..." Olia Choko
"The truth of the matter is, we have lost this war. The Empire as we knew it is gone. Already we were letting it slip when the Rebel Alliance grew in unseen spaces like a cancer. For us, this represents an opportunity to reshape ourselves... It is on us to retake and control the narrative. What will our story be? Whatโ€”or whoโ€”is the Empire?" Gallius Rax
Before and during the Battle of Jakku comic, I've pondered the overarching conflict between the New Republic and the Resistance against the various Imperial Remnants, the most infamous of these remnants being the First Order. There are three phases to this overarching conflict: the final year of the Galactic Civil War, the Thrawn Campaign, and the Second Galactic Civil War (Rise and Fall did use the FO-Resistance War, but it's pretty much another Galactic Civil War. Some funny coincidence is both conflicts happened over one year and involved a son of Leia and Han becoming the big bad. I can see the conflict being renamed). All three conflicts represent a cycle that persisted in the galaxy for three decades: the struggle to preserve and safeguard freedom and democracy and how Fascism continues to survive despite its evils being well-known.
The New Republic and the Imperial Remnants teaches us that building a new democracy in the ashes of Fascism is an arduous task, and evil doesn't simply fade away, but it evolves till it's ready to strike once again. However, even when all hope is lost, a new generation will always rise up to prevent the work of their parents from being undone by a generation lost to a new wave of Fascism.
However, as Beaumont Kin points out, another problem comes after the fight. How do we prevent Fascism from rising again? The Empire was beaten, yet the Empire simply evolved into the First Order. While the First Order collapsed within one year of their rule, it shows how easy it is for evil to return.
After the Battle of Jakku comic run concludes, I want to further explore the three conflicts of the New Republic and the Resistance against the Imperial Remnants and the First Order. Hopefully, by also revisiting the various stories of the conflicts, I can better understand the themes that each conflict showcases regarding the struggle for true freedom and democracy. I will also give my thoughts on each arc of the comic run. Until then, we shall wait and see how the Battle of Jakku comic concludes to properly analyze the final year of the GCW.

For the danganronpa ask thing: 47: What are some of your Remnant of Despair headcanons?
yippee! Thank you for asking!
47: What are some of your Remnant of Despair headcanons?
Hmm letโ€™s see,, Mostly Sonia thoughts tbh
Sonia played a very passive leadership role, sorta acting as a military commander of sorts. This not only contradicts her natural instinct to do everything herself, but also forces her into the Queen role that she feels somewhat unsuited for. She also was real into public executions, which Kazuichi provided. These were some of the first prototypes of the executions later used in the killing game.
Sonia and Kazuichi for sure had a thing during despair times. Theyโ€™re so bad for each other, ESPECIALLY THEN, and they both knew it, but that just made it go on longer.
The idea that The Remnants had to give up something fundamental to themself or otherwise adopt something of Junkoโ€™s is so real to me ok. For Sonia it was giving up her agency.
also am always obsessed with the idea that Imposter during the Tragedy was disguised as Junko herself. Thatโ€™s real to me ok. Their canon design for it makes no sense.
Nekomaru for sure started falling to despair in an attempt to help pull the others(specifically Akane) out of it, and was manipulated into thinking he was hurting them further. He gave up his connections to them and to all his old teams. Man probably killed a lot of his old trainees :(

||. 2am link thoughts bc there's something in the idea of a hero whose duty goes unfulfilled . the restlessness of that . the way it sits there , hot and heavy as an undeniable burden . it's how link kept himself silent because he didn't want to burden anyone else with the idea of a hero who had troubles of his own . it's how he bottled it all up and dealt with it all alone and kept his chin held high and let things pass through or around him because faltering isn't an option . it's about how that wasn't enough .
it's about how he's never really lost a battle in all of his incarnations ( save a singular branch of OoT anyways and even then //gestures at training TP!link. ) . it's about how the most ancient parts of link simply can't comprehend that . refuses to accept it . WILL NOT . it's about how he has to anyways . it's about losing . it's about the vengeance of it , at a point . the storming the front gates of the castle because SCREW YOU . it's about the ghosts he constantly interacts with in the king , the champions , the gravesites , the malice , the eventual poes and gloom .
it's about how he fell to the guardians anyways by no fault of his own , or really ANYONE'S fault besides calamity ganon himself , but how link won't ever really see it that way . maybe he will logically . but emotionally ? that's a harder sell .
it's about how they were blindsided and he wasn't ready . it's about the 100 years lost . it's about all of the lives lost . it's about the time zelda spends bridling the calamity in the castle by herself when link knows damn well he's been quite literally born to be at her side during this exact battle . it's about how it goes past that , though . it's personal . that's his best friend and confidante . that's his princess too . it's about how he's lost too much and he's most certainly not losing her . not again . not ever . certainly not after losing everybody else too .
it's about fear holding back instinct and stifling courage when that fear is left unreleased and yet , despite that , fear is exactly the fire to light beneath one's feet to be courageous enough to not repeat the past . it's about how courage isn't being fearless it's about what you do to rise about the fear . it's about how link is oh-so human . he's a teenage boy . it's about the terror and grief and guilt . it's about the courage and love and ( eventual ) acceptance .
