SPOILERS FOR ALAN WAKE II BELOW!!!

So uh... my kind has been looping (spiraling?) about three things lately I'd say

First how this game showcases mental illness and the path to becoming a better person. Partly because I wrote something like this before, in my first comic (I'm not Sam though lol). How Alan was legit a deeply flawed guy and how letting other people help him, remembering his love for Alice and accepting his dark side made him finally get out of this hell. It's beautiful, I could write about how Alan is such an interesting character for days and days

Secondly. About the Final Draft. DID ALAN WAKE BECOME GOD 2 OR SOMETHING. LIKE WHAT THE FUCK REMEDY, SAM LAKE YOU HACK. THIS FUCKING CLIFFHANGER I WANT MORE

And thirdly... God. Dude. I wasn't expecting Zane/Darling yaoi man. Like. One of the things that makes me love Alan Wake the character is how he's played by one guy and voiced by other. It's such a clunky thing from the past that makes him feel unique and in a way eerie/inhuman. Then, you make each one play a different character by themselves, which is nice. THEN YOU MAKE THEM INTERACT IN THE MOST FUCKING HOMOEROTIC 2 MINUTE CUTSCENE EVER. LIKE BRO. WAS ALAN BORN FROM OLD MAN YAOI. BY SAY GEX. I WANY MORE OF THESE FUCKING GAY BITCHES OR ELSE I'M GOING TO FINLAND AND [redacted]

I have a theory that the Tom Zane we see in AW2 is actually The Diver’s Scratch-equivalent. BEAR WITH ME:

So, first off, my understanding of Scratch is that he was some sort of double the dark place created. An empty vessel, which Alan uses for a villain in AWAN and which the Dark Presence uses as a vessel when that version of him is destroyed. He’s more like a… concept, a plot thread floating around. I know that might not be right, but I personally really hate the idea that Scratch was just the dark presence the whole time, because it makes no sense with what little we see of him in AW1. However, as he’s apparently at least possessed by the dark presence in AW2 and the DP was apparently born from Alan’s misery in the first place (what the hell Sam Lake) we’ll be simple like the game and say he’s just the worst parts of Alan.

ANYWAY. We see in the room 665 flashback that AW2 Zane and Alan partied together and wrote Return. Scratch’s theme, The Happy Song, is playing, “hinting” that it wasn’t actually Alan. But it’s later revealed that it actually WAS him (which also makes me wonder why AW2 Zane plays along when Alan accuses him of teaming up with Scratch— maybe he was actually working with Alice? I digress.) Why would that song be playing if Scratch was never there? Could just be a red herring, I suppose, which leads me to:

In House of Dreams we hear (or… read) an explanation from The Diver. That Thomas Zane was split into two entities upon descending into the Dark Place: the part of him that the Bright Presence took over, and everything that was left; his “true self.” His true self (??) created a ‘baby dimension.’

Honestly, the blog post seems a little rough around the edges, and i don’t think all of it is canon because it implies Zane gave the dark place the ability to turn art into reality… through art. I know Sam Lake likes bootstrap paradoxes but Christ. BUT this is being told to us second hand, from someone who admits they didn’t fully understand it either— it’s a big game of telephone pretty much. IMO there are canon elements to it, but it should be taken with a few grains of salt.

SO: I think The Diver is the part of Zane that was overtaken by the Bright Presence. I think AW2 Zane is what was left— and room 665 is his “baby dimension.” Hence why he never leaves it; he’s safe there, the dark presence won’t touch him/can’t manipulate him. I don’t think AW2 Zane is his “true self” or anything, though; I think perhaps it was just the darker parts of him that the bright presence didn’t want to touch. ERGO: The Diver’s Scratch-equivalent.

I have no idea how him being a filmmaker applies, or why he seemed to frightened of Jesse and Dr. Darling, or where the Bright Presence went, but… that’s the most sense I’ve been able to make of AW2 Zane.
