Church Vow
(CW for split second mention of implied s/h and mentions of not great parents. Cross-posting from AO3.)
I've known you since you were a boy
Your parents did not seem kind,
They did not answer the questions you asked
Until you learned not to wonder "why?"
I watched you grow up within these walls
Watched you learn and change,
And yet your friendship with one other little boy
That always stayed the same.
I may not have eyes, but I do see
The lack of trust you put in me
Your faith is strong but it grows weary
The world is big, it must be scary
For one young man who knows not where he's going
Who tries to be strong and yet is still growing
Forced to grow up too fast, kicked out of the house
Is that what brings you here?
You sit in my pew and stare at the
book in your hands, it must have answers
The frightened prayers of a grown adult
Prayers that never seem to get answers
You gave up asking your parents "why?", so you ask Him instead
And the answers you got led to feelings of dread
because they were not what you wanted often
Is that it?
Or are you here for refuge
Here for escape
Here for someone to let you stay late
The priest is forgiving, he will let you in
He will let you tell the woes within
But you shut him off, its what you're used to
No one knows your world but you.
That is how it must always be
No one else is allowed to see
"Boys don't cry"
yet you still weep
 I see you, Mark
I have watched you grow
I've seen you react
I've watched you become cold
Yet you open up again when you feel He is near
When you know Him, you show no fear
You put your trust in God and hope He won't let you down
I know for a fact that He would frown
at the thought of leaving His child to more strife
Until you consider the edge of a knife
 I also know Cesar
The boy you so love
Your friendship grows more than above
That boy is an angel. A loyal friend
Someone who will stay 'til the end
I know he is leaving
I know he is scared
That your friendship will be broken, unable to be repaired
He will not leave forever. To college he'll go
But you will see him again, that much I know
You both want to move out of this place
Out to an area with much more space
Where you can be you and he can be him
But first you must withstand one more year
Within Mandela County
Under the cross
Just one more year
Yet you feel lost.
 I am but a structure
A man-made thing
yet I can see
All that happens within
I have seen funerals happen
I have seen tears fall
I have seen weddings
I have seen it all
Yet the one sight I cannot bear
Is more than just a corpse's stare
It's a lost young child in an adult body
Hiding in a pew, because somebody
Made him feel unloved for what he was.
 Yet he is safe here.
The doors will not budge.
His refuge is his.
Hopefully that is enough.

; your golden blood pours from the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet, stigmata symbolism flooding into your wrinkles and inlerfect skin and collecting into a puddle on the floor, as if i could kneel before you, cup my hands, and drink the bitter liquid. as if it could serve as my life force.
; you're sanctified, in my mind. i think if i took you off the pedestal i've placed you on, if i could see past your excuses and desperate pleas, i'd finally see what's right in front of me. my friends say there's something off about the whole situation, but what can i do when you're never wrong and are perfect in every feasible way.
; there's fallow in the fall and you caused it, but deep in my fragile bones, you feel like salvation. like if i cling to you as tight as judas clung to jesus, i can make the intangible tangible. if i can have your teeth scraping tongue, your molars, your irises, if i can breathe in your selfishly induced pain and relish in your compunctious cruelty, i can use your veins to paint myself in a softer light.

TW: religious content but not in a preachy way. Just ritual gremlinry :)
I saw a hc that the Curtises were Catholic and I started thinking about Sugar’s confirmation name. I’m not Catholic but I have done some research and I settled on Olga after Olga of Kyiv.
Olga was a Kievan Rus princess and regent. Her husband was murdered by an enemy tribe. The tribe then proposed that Olga marry their prince. She “accepted” and then pranked them into getting killed. She changed her name to Elena after being baptized.
Sugar loves history, the Middle Ages, and badass women.
Mrs. Curtis was very confused and a little bit scared when Sugar announced that she wanted her confirmation name to be Olga. She did some research and suggested “How about you make your confirmation name Elena?”
Sugar rejected the idea because “No one knows who Elena of Kyiv is. They know Olga.”

So I’ve been enjoying the Disney vs. DeSantis memes as much as anyone, but like. I do feel like a lot of people who had normal childhoods are missing some context to all this.
I was raised in the Bible Belt in a fairly fundie environment. My parents were reasonably cool about some things, compared to the rest of my family, but they certainly had their issues. But they did let me watch Disney movies, which turned out to be a point of major contention between them and my other relatives.
See, I think some people think this weird fight between Disney and fundies is new. It is very not new. I know that Disney’s attempts at inclusion in their media have been the source of a lot of mockery, but what a lot of people don’t understand is that as far as actual company policy goes, Disney has actually been an industry leader for queer rights. They’ve had policies assuring equal healthcare and partner benefits for queer employees since the early 90s.
I’m not sure how many people reading this right now remember the early 90s, but that was very much not industry standard. It was a big deal when Disney announced that non-married queer partners would be getting the same benefits as the married heterosexual ones.
Like — it went further than just saying that any unmarried partners would be eligible for spousal benefits. It straight-up said that non-same-sex partners would still need to be married to receive spousal benefits, but because same-sex partners couldn’t do that, proof that they lived together as an established couple would be enough.
In other words, it put long-term same-sex partners on a higher level than opposite-sex partners who just weren’t married yet. It put them on the exact same level as heterosexual married partners.
They weren’t the first company ever to do this, but they were super early. And they were certainly the first mainstream “family-friendly” company to do it.
Conservatives lost their damn minds.
Protests, boycotts, sermons, the whole nine yards. I can’t tell you how many books about the evils of Disney my grandmother tried to get my parents to read when I was a kid.
When we later moved to Florida, I realized just how many queer people work at Disney — because historically speaking, it’s been a company that has guaranteed them safety, non-discrimination, and equal rights. That’s when I became aware of their unofficial “Gay Days” and how Christians would show up from all over the country to protest them every year. Apparently my grandmother had been upset about these days for years, but my parents had just kind of ignored her.
Out of curiosity, I ended up reading one of the books my grandmother kept leaving at our house. And friends — it’s amazing how similar that (terrible, poorly written) rhetoric was to what people are saying these days. Disney hires gay pedophiles who want to abuse your children. Disney is trying to normalize Satanism in our beautiful, Christian America.
Just tons of conspiracy theories in there that ranged from “a few bad things happened that weren’t actually Disney’s fault, but they did happen” to “Pocahontas is an evil movie, not because it distorts history and misrepresents indigenous life, but because it might teach children respect for nature. Which, as we all know, would cause them all to become Wiccans who believe in climate change.”
Like — please, take it from someone who knows. This weird fight between fundies and Disney is not new. This is not Disney’s first (gay) rodeo. These people have always believed that Disney is full of evil gays who are trying to groom and sexually abuse children.
The main difference now is that these beliefs are becoming mainstream. It’s not just conservative pastors who are talking about this. It’s not just church groups showing up to boycott Gay Day. Disney is starting to (reluctantly) say the quiet part out loud, and so are the Republicans. Disney is publicly supporting queer rights and announcing company-supported queer events and the Republican Party is publicly calling them pedophiles and enacting politically driven revenge.
This is important, because while this fight has always been important in the history of queer rights, it is now being magnified. The precedent that a fight like this could set is staggering. For better or for worse, we live in a corporation-driven country. I don’t like it any more than you do, and I’m not about to defend most of Disney’s business practices. But we do live in a nation where rights are largely tied to corporate approval, and the fact that we might be entering an age where even the most powerful corporations in the country are being banned from speaking out in favor of rights for marginalized people… that’s genuinely scary.
Like… I’ll just ask you this. Where do you think we’d be now, in 2023, if Disney had been prevented from promising its employees equal benefits in 1994? That was almost thirty years ago, and look how far things have come. When I looked up news articles for this post from that era, even then journalists, activists, and fundie church leaders were all talking about how a company of Disney’s prominence throwing their weight behind this movement could lead to the normalization of equal protections in this country.
The idea of it scared and thrilled people in equal parts even then. It still scares and thrills them now.
I keep seeing people say “I need them both to lose!” and I get it, I do. Disney has for sure done a lot of shit over the years. But I am begging you as a queer exvangelical to understand that no. You need Disney to win. You need Disney to wipe the fucking floor with these people.
Right now, this isn’t just a fight between a giant corporation and Ron DeSantis. This is a fight about the right of corporations to support marginalized groups. It’s a fight that ensures that companies like Disney still can offer benefits that a discriminatory government does not provide. It ensures that businesses much smaller than Disney can support activism.
Hell, it ensures that you can support activism.
The fight between weird Christian conspiracy theorists and Disney is not new, because the fight to prevent any tiny victory for marginalized groups is not new. The fight against the normalization of othered groups is not new.
That’s what they’re most afraid of. That each incremental victory will start to make marginalized groups feel safer, that each incremental victory will start to turn the tide of public opinion, that each incremental victory will eventually lead to sweeping law reform.
They’re afraid that they won’t be able to legally discriminate against us anymore.
So guys! Please. This fight, while hilarious, is also so fucking important. I am begging you to understand how old this fight is. These people always play the long game. They did it with Roe and they’re doing it with Disney.
We have! To keep! Pushing back!

there's a line in a poem i love that reminds of the angel you ask about; it says "i had the sudden, mad notion that i wanted to be [his] lover". this poem is not about the collision of love and the desideratum it brings. the poem is about the scraping of a rock against a hollow cave, the feeling of mint in your mouth and water in your stomach as a means of distraction. however, bidart brings up the luck one can't rely on when searching for something deeper in life - the almost tangible feeling (and truly tangible when you reach out and touch her fingers) of what the meaning of life is, in accordance to society.
not many get to find it, they say, and when they do, it is very rarely that this person you cherish is the one. i want to know why we care so much; why we want to search the bottom of the bermuda and the top of everest when all this love is constantly surrounding us anyway. when it blossoms in the smell of day old rain and the taste of maple syrup and the simplicity of peeling and sharing an orange. we shouldn't need this fulfilled vision of a connected ideal that may not even exist; we should be able to see what we have and love and love and love anyway, regardless.
not many get to find it, they say, and i preach of the love around us, and in that i've found her. i've found her and i can't say she's the one but i love her and her eyes are green and yellow and brown and change color depending on the light. luck and love and she's the angel i didn't know i was looking for because i'm not religious. but she's here, and with me, and i have her, and i love her. i love her and i'd whisper it into the night a thousand times just to make her think it true.
Have you had contact with an angel?

TW: RELIGIOUS THEMES, STEPCEST, INTOXICATION, DUB-CON/NON-CON. DEAD DOVE: DO NOT EAT. MDNI 18+
Stepbrothers Simon, Kyle, and Johnny who force their religious, younger stepsister to get drunk with them. They continuously force alcohol down your throat until you're pathetically and drunkenly crying into Kyle's chest while Johnny rubs up against you.
Kyle cradles your skull and pushes his beer against your lips, getting lost in your half-lidded, drunken eyes. You don't even feel Simon slip inside your leaking cunt, or remember how you got into this position, with Johnny behind you, Gaz in front of you, and Simon beneath you. All you remember is feeling lost, absolutely dumbfounded when you couldn't find your cross necklace around your neck.

You think THIS site and THIS generation have no media literacy? Guys I read a twitter conversation yesterday between middle aged men where among other things they said the fascist allegory in the Star Wars prequels is the Jedi. That the Jedi having a strict code makes them “arguably fascist.” My god. Award for the least media comprehension on God’s green earth goes to cishet boomer sci-fi fans.
