Urban Time Capsule: Reinhart Wolf's 1979 Lens on the Art Deco Majesty of New York's Comcast Building

Born in 1938, Astrid was a war-child, and her wealthy family lived in the well-heeled area of Altona, Hamburg. Evacuated to the Baltic, she missed the word of the hostilities, but life was not easy on her return to Hamburg. “Luckily, my family’s house was not destroyed, although all the windows were blown out and we did not have any heating. Thankfully, we were all alive. The main focus was “How do we get food?” My mother was especially successful in this. She sold or exchanged everything we had, the furniture and all her jewellery, to get money to buy food.

“Although it was the war, I had a happy childhood. Altona is close to the harbour, and many houses – including the whole road next to ours – were destroyed, but we had a lot of fun playing on the bomb sites. Our parents warned us not to play there, but we always did – because it was so interesting!”

Astrid’s artistic flair- especially for textiles – was soon recognised, and encouraged by her mother Neilsa. “At home, we lived in the kitchen because that was the only place my mother could heat. It was also the only room that still had windows. We did not have any radio, so at night my mother used to draw things such as the dresses she used to wear before the war. She would sit in the kitchen on dark winter nights sewing little dresses for my dolls, and would show me how to do it. Here family had been very rich, and she taught me about texture and things that are fine. That influenced me a lot. She taught me to draw when I was 6 or 7. Later I was keen to become a fashion designer.

When it was time for me to go to college I attended Hamburg School of Fashion and Design.  Here I met Reinhart Wolf, who taught me about photography. Gradually, I changed my mind and decided to become a photographer. Reinhart taught me about faces – that it was what was behind a face that a photographer should try to reach when they tool a portrait. When I graduated, I became Reinhardt's assistant, which was a great honour. My mother bought me a good camera – a Rollercord – and Reinhart encouraged me to take pictures in my spare time. He let me use his dark room and was always prepared to discuss my photos, and the art of composition. That was what I was doing when I met The Beatles.”

Henrik is named after Klaus's younger late brother Henrik

He is the middle child, and surprisingly enough, for everyone, he was born a tribrid like Hope (the witch genes from Klaus's mother snuck in)

He is a year younger than Hope and tries to keep all three parts of himself in check

He spends time with his aunt Freya and Davina and Uncle Kol a lot since they have a lot of knowledge about the witch side of their family

He loves his family and his siblings

Like Hope, he also feels a bit different, but he also knows his family will be there for him no matter what

He is pretty serious and is the strategist in the family. He plans the alliances and makes sure that when his cousins and siblings take over, they don't make any more enemies than they already inherited from their parents

He also gets along well with the Saltzman twins and loves geeking out on magic with them and the Bennett sisters

His wolf fur is dirty blonde and darker than both his older brother and sister

I too believe that some of Rejet's games take place in the same universe! The events of Black Wolves Saga took place several centuries ago, when the Sakamaki were children, and everything that happens in Dance With Devils, Carnelian Blood and Diabolik Lovers is happening at about the same time. And yes, I'm sure Karl is the big bad in all of this histories 💀.

OMGGGG YESS! The cat people in Black Wolves Saga are never mentioned in any of the diaboys routes unlike races like the Vampires (obviously), Wolves, Vibora, and Alder. It was a little suspicious why there were so few races mentioned in Diabolik Lovers.

It's easy to assume that those four just stood the test of time, and that might be true. However, there was such a wide variety of races in the beginning of Black Wolves Saga, but most of them were either dead or dying, like the bunny boy, Zara Skeens. He's the last of his kind, and the only reason he isn't dead is that he was taken in by Foina's dad, Edgar Galland.

The same goes for the cat boys, Mejojo, Auger, and Julian. I would say the same for their parents as well, but most of them met an unfortunate fate, by the start of the story and now their whole race is slowly dying just like the humans the wolves were killing at the time. Yes you read that right there were humans living in the demon world more specifically Weblin a place for both humans and demi-humans, (creatures who have the power to shift between both human and animal forms.) before Arles made it his life misson to eradicate them.

I'm also assuming their lifespan is not nearly as long as vampires. But it wasn't just the rabbit race human race or the cat race that were dying some wolves were also catching a disease that was wiping out their race aswell (seriously, what's up with Rejet and having diseases decimate entire races?).

The disease was called Zodiva, a.k.a. "Mad Wolf Disease." Some known characters afflicted with this disease were Arles and Rath. However, it's puzzling why we don't see this disease affecting modern-day Diabolik Lovers wolves. My theory is that Karl released this disease to quell the rebellious wolf population; as the wiki states, "For many years, humans, cats, and wolves shared political power, but one day, the wolves revolted, plunging the country into chaos." and "Arles reportedly led a revolt against the monarchy 10 years before the story's beginning and was thus driven out along with the other wolves."

Karl has a history of afflicting people with diseases to defeat them (cough, cough, the founders).

While we're on the topic of founders, we can imply that the person who created Endzeit was Carnelian Brecht from the series Carnelian Blood @vampirerosemary explains it way better then I ever could so I would recommend you read these 3 post!

🦇DIABOLIK LOVERS IN THE SAME UNIVERSE AS CARNELIAN BLOOD?🦇

Regarding Carnelian Blood in Dance with Devils, it's 100% canon that vampires exist, and they are the main antagonists in the game, alongside the church. Both settings take place in Japan and involve magical beings, but it's a little confusing why vampires are mentioned in Dance with Devils while devils aren't mentioned in Diabolik Lovers. Kanato and Laito make references to Incubus (Kanato literally had the spirit of an Incubus possess Teddy and hold Yui down), and Urie is an Incubus. So, it's possible that devils are a small or lesser-known race in Diabolik Lovers.

It's also interesting that Nesta is canonically the father of Lindo, and the fact that Nesta and Karlheinz share a striking resemblance, from their hair to their clothing style, it's noteworthy to mention Karlheinz's affinity for cosplaying different people, like Reinhart, and having kids who all look different from each other suggests that he might have assumed various identities and appearances throughout history. This idea is even supported by the fact that Kanato mentioned that their father could change his appearance, becoming a man or a woman at any time, and even they don't know what he truly looks like.

But keep in mind, Karl has a track record of making red-haired kids.

In my own personal headcanon, vampires age every 50 years. So if what the wiki says is true, that Karl is about 2000 years old, that means he's in his 40s.

In conclusion, Karlheinz is having the world's worst mid-life crisis, and he's making it everyone's problem. 💀

Max Scheler and Astrid Kirchherr

INT: How did you collaborate with Max Scheler?

KIRCHHERR: In the Sixties Max was one of the most important photographers. For example he took pictures of the first transplantation of a heart living for for weeks in quarantaine with the patients. He was working for the Stern, later becoming the editor in chief of the magazine GEO. Together with him I was at the setting for A Hard Day’s Night in 1964.

INT: How did it get to this?

KIRCHHERR: Brian Epstein did not permit photographers. I called George because Stern magazine asked me to be the door opener. George said: 'I will talk to the others. According to me it’s okay when you come to London and take pictures. But they have to pay you, otherwise they may stay at home.' Max gave me a small camera which I never had worked with before. And there were some fine pictures as a result. Especially the pictures of children in Liverpool. Some of them looked really looked like figures in a Charles Dickens novel. (The following is an Interview with Ulf Krüger, Astrid’s business partner and manager, from 'Astrid Kirchherr: A Retrospective'.)

INT: Did the feature in Stern magazine raise awareness of Astrid’s photography when it was published in 1964? 

Krüger: No, because that’s another story. Astrid was not famous as a photographer then but she was working as an assistant for a really famous photographer, Reinhart Wolf. Stern magazine asked Max Scheler, who was the chief photographer for Stern, to go to England to cover the filming of A Hard Day’s Night and go to Liverpool and see The Beatles. That was their rough idea, but in 1964 The Beatles, already at the top of their career, wouldn’t have reporters of any magazine at the time of filming. So Reinhart Wolf recommended Max (they were friends) ask Astrid to be a sort of ‘door opener’, not a photographer. To cut it very short, Astrid called The Beatles and asked if it was possible to have coverage and The Beatles said yes as long as she was part of it they could do it. So Astrid went to England with Max, but he was the photographer and Astrid was the ‘door opener’. Of course Max knew she was a photographer and gave her a camera and she took a lot of photos as well but she didn’t have the job from Stern magazine. When Astrid had shot film she gave the film to Max because he was the boss and Max gave all the films to Stern with his stamp on. So the articles in Stern magazine don’t mention the credit Astrid Kirchherr, it’s all Max Scheler.

I found out where Max was living, called him, explained who I was and asked him why he had Astrid’s photos printed with his credit, and he told me he really didn’t know about that but acknowledged that I was right. He had sent all the films to Stern magazine and it was a Max Scheler thing so the credit was always Max Scheler. He apologised and asked to meet to return the negatives to Astrid which was great. So we met and Astrid and Max sorted out the photos and so the beautiful photos with the Liverpool kids ended up being Astrid Kirchherr copyright. Nice story. 

INT: Do you think the issues you confronted as Astrid’s manager were connected to her working as a female photographer at that time?

Krüger: I think it had a lot to do with that, especially being a special woman. Astrid used to dress in a special way when she met The Beatles, wearing leather trousers, leather jackets and things like that. That was really unusual for a young woman in Germany and I’m quite sure it was unusual in England as well, or in Japan or wherever. So, one one hand, she was special, maybe people were even a bit frightened because she was self-conscious and things like that. On the other hand, she was just a woman because business was dominated by men then, still is, and so that’s one of the additional problems I think. They only liked the Beatles photos because they couldn’t realise that a photo of Rory Storm for example is a beautiful classical shot, they didn’t realise it because it was not a Beatle and that could disappoint an artist heavily I think. So that’s how it was, still it’s a bit discriminating. Women are not paid like men, are not respected like men in many cases, and that’s not good, and it was much worse then.

so long, we become the flowers - Cowboy AU - Fic Beginning Meta

So, "we become the flowers", a.k.a. my cowboy au is finally out and being worked on! I'm super excited to be posting this. I'm delighted to have gotten it done already as I was hoping to have it posted before the 17th to celebrate the RDR re-port hahah. I got lucky!

General thoughts

This fic is meant to be a western style of story, and as such I wanted to follow one of the three western storylines (bounty hunting, revenge, and political stories). I chose revenge! Bounty hunting is technically in there too, but I’d call this more of a revenge story than one about picking up a bounty.

I kind of blended this Western revenge genre with Austen-style romance because ooughh,,, the romantic and homoerotic tension in wanting someone SO BADLY but not being allowed to make a move for fear of scandal… it’s tasty stuff.

The au is meant to be set in a fantasy alternate - real-world in many ways, but flowers can bloom whenever I feel like it because I want cute flowers throughout the fic. I wanted an early-spring discussion in the beginning of this fic, but Fade gives her a peony, which bloom starting from late spring.

The town was named Vennecoate both as a reference to Venice and also to Bloodwritten Silver. I chose Venice as the inspiration behind Venshire in that fic and I liked the reasoning well enough to do the same here - that reasoning being Venice is both a huge part of Valorant lore and also where the training range is. I just like it! I chose this specific naming style after a real old western town, too - Kennecott in Alaska, which was a mining camp abandoned after natural resources dried up in 1938. It’s a national historic landmark now and can be visited.

Fade and Neon are called Hazal and Tala in this au, but like I did with bloodwritten silver, I’ll be calling them and other named characters by their codenames just for my own sake in meta posts.

Neon’s dog is called Kidlat which means lightning… bc “lightning strike”… she has Lightning and Strike… I’ll go now

Someone on Discord actually drew these guys too, and they managed to NAIL the exact vibe I was going for without ever even seeing the moodboards. Huge shoutout to WissyDumb / wizzul on discord! Sharing these with their permission of course.

They don’t have their piercings in the fic (piercings wouldn’t become commonly used until around the 1950s) and Fade actually has some trauma related to infection and disease (we’ll learn more about this later), so she wouldn’t risk it even if they were commonly worn at this time.
