i know i’m far from an expert on history but it always bothers me to see bob marley’s portrait hanging in my local weed shop. like, i’ve loved reggae music since i was young, well before i ever smoked weed, i know listening to music is pretty rad when stoned, and i admit i understand that a lot of prominent figures and concepts idolized by the hippies and revolutionaries of the 60’s and 70’s in the usa eventually became synonymous with drug use, esp marijuana, due to smear campaigns against counterculture so maybe it is a kind of defiance to display it proudly? but while i understand the admiration a lot of disillusioned young people in the usa in the 60’s and 70’s would have felt for the people fighting the class war in jamaica and the reggae music emerging with lyrics about said war but still pushing for peace, for one love, as they worked to topple inequity and corrupt systems while redefining perspectives on race, oppression and intergenerational trauma but how did bob marley become “the weed man” in the cultural consciousness when he was a spokesperson for political change and class revolution? is it only that way in the us? do other countries and cultures see him as more than a stoner icon with his face on rasta memorabilia sold at jacked up prices to college kids who have never even heard of the rastafari revolution, the pan-african movement or the jamaican civil war, idk why but it really does bother me to see a strong voice for peace and change reduced to a face plastered on drug paraphernalia and stoner t-shirts. like… damn. that’s the death of a revolutionary in the capitalist tradition, i suppose. bob marley’s portrait hanging above the bud hut cash register, “grunge” clothing sold by fast fashion corporate hellholes, t-shirts with kurt cobain’s suicide note written on them being sold for 800 bucks a pop, eat the rich stickers for sale on amazon of all places, santa muerte being sold as a goth accessory or a “hardcore” generic tattoo in the us stripped of what she symbolizes to me and many other latina/o people who were raised with mexican neopaganism and folk catholic traditions, sanitized street art commissioned by some silicon valley suit that is purely aesthetics with no heart, no soul, nothing related to the authenticity of artistic vandalism, just imaginary street cred points for a rich dick. i get the same feeling in my stomach seeing the “aesthetic” whitewash of counterculture, the clownery of “alt” culture on apps like tiktok, the cashing in on the suffering of the oppressed for a quick buck and the tragic victory of cementing hippies and beatniks and freedom fighters in the minds of the following generations as degenerate druggies (thanks nixon and crew) that i get when i hear that pop remix of “the hanging tree” and it’s a lot to take in while i’m just trying to buy a box of strawberry cough prerolls.

Today got me all nostalgic and only because it's half a year since Käärijä's Berlin gig aka the first time I saw him live 🥰
Some memories, the good the bad and the bizarre
- amazing outfits from people in the queue
- special mention to that one person in neon green facemask because that was super impressive
- first row and right in front of the default Dalton resting spot so I could watch them intently
- I think I forgot how to breathe when Jere appeared. The most powerful head empty experience in a long time
- it was really dark in the venue. there was this moment when Jesse and mr. Bodyguard walked along the barrier and I only noticed each of them when he was already right in front of me
- I got that anxiety attack when left all alone in the queue for five minutes but I soon returned to reality when I saw a single apple slowly rolling towards me on the pavement
- people I met in the queue, people I met in the venue, people in general???
- when Käärijä saw that everyone knows the lyrics and asked in a grumpy voice "alright for real now, how many of you came from Finland" and only a small group in the middle raised their hands and he was like ????
- some German dude behind me noticing with slight disbelief that the entire first row talks in Polish
- some kid at some point before the gig even started kept trying to lie on me, like leaning on my back to get just a bit closer to the barrier, so I leaned on them in return every time they did this. After five minutes they were gone
- I left the venue 100% convinced that Häärijä hates me lol
- all the fanmade merch, bracelets, photos, stickers, more bracelets
- when the CCC reggae mix started playing at the end and Jere didn't want to leave the stage and we didn't want him to leave and I did that 🫶 heart hands sign and he immediately did it too sjhshdsjhd
- all in all 10/10 adventure of a lifetime no regrets I don't want to live through something like this ever again
- oh I forgot that I am very visible on the photo with the audience lol bye

Innersleeve Records, 2022
There was one more store on the list that I planned on going to. That was Innersleeve Records in Amagansett, located all the way out at the Eastern tip of Long Island. It’s the one trip I really had to prepare for. At 60 miles and 70 minutes to get there, Innersleeve- would be the furthermost locale of any stops I’d make this year. Out east is where the most scenic parts are - the farmland, the famed beaches, lighthouses, and resorts that partially define it and give Long Island its identity.
Innersleeve- was on the list of my last record-store victory tour (‘18). It was to be on my last stop between mid-July and the end of summer in the event that anyone could go with me, because I refused to go all by myself. So I asked all of my radio-station friends if they wanted to join but all I heard from them was deafening silence. I was also dealing with a personal collapse that rocked me like no other before it. Hence why I didn’t take the ride. But this year is a different one which didn’t deal me a bad river card or rolled snake eyes. Like the last, I had plenty of sizeable victories. I was finally going to give Innersleeve a chance I’ve been putting off, even if gas prices were at an all-time high.
It was the day I was going to head out there, a partially cloudy Thursday. I sat in front of the computer having a breakfast egg-bowl with bits of green peppers, tomatoes, mushrooms, and bacon with a glass of orange juice. I popped in a cassette in the deck and let it run through to be digitized while auditioning my music finds for an upcoming radio show. I asked my friends on social media who visited Innersleeve- what they thought and told me it was a pretty good spot, but they also cautioned me that their prices were not cheap but reasonable. WUSB’s all-around good guy Evan told me that he nabbed some spaghetti western soundtracks and giallo for his mother-in-law. (Nice. I guess he was feeling Italian that day.) So, how ‘not cheap but reasonable’ are they, really? Why not visit their page and find out.
Here’s the daily record flip…oh, the fucking horror.
I saw the stickers on what they were selling and it didn’t look good for me. For example: a copy of Talk Talk’s The Party’s Over for $26.99. New records from Interpol, Soccer Mommy, Harry Styles, and King Diamond went for $25.00 to $35.00, some frightening more. Here’s an original pressing of Talking Heads’ '77 album going for $40.00. The Doors R.S.D. (Record Store Day) sold for the same. A yellow vinyl version of The Smile’s A Light for Attracting Attention spun handsomely for $50.00. Billion Dollar Babies by Alice Cooper was asking for a whopping $60.00. Wow, seriously? Marie Antoinette would tell me to fuck right off and go choke on a cake.
I’d assume that being they’re located in the trendy uptight part of Long Island, that their selection was pretty straight. I saw nothing but pop, rock, common reggae, all-too-familiar indie artists, American standard jazz greats, and Rock & Roll Hall-Of-Famers. Maybe the occasional Amyl & The Sniffers record? Nothing daring, challenging, or defying to throw in the face of the power-move-making status quo in an uppity part of - wait, nevermind - they carried a copy of GG Allin’s Brutality And Bloodshed For All. That’ll scare all the socialites, Seinfeld, and the rich and powerful back into their bank-account vault homes in no time, eh? I had a laugh for five seconds before I resumed hate-watching their stock. It seemed like they didn’t even attempt to care in hiding their price tags while flipping through their new arrivals.
I remember when I went to Plainview’s Vinyl Bay 777. I looked around and experiencing the freshly-built interior felt like finding a hidden gem in the middle of nowhere. The excitement started to die slowly when I saw that all of their stock was priced three to four times what other stores were selling. They were big on condition and rarity. I only lasted 45 minutes before walking out with nothing and feeling ashamed of myself.
I’m more of quantity over quality. I can care less if the album in question is in tattered condition. As long as I have the physical product and can get it for less as possible then great. I can always stream it afterwards. I knew that -777 and Innersleeve were playing the vinyl revival game and were competing to see who can sell their stock for the highest price possible. They’ll have their case as to why they mark up their selection and even you’d agree it’d make sense. It doesn’t mean you’d want to go broke, and that’s if you were in my position.
That said, their selection didn’t excite me and reeling from sticker shock wasn’t helping, either. Along with the mania of high gas prices ($4.40 a gallon at the time of posting) and spending $893.00 in two days at Amityville’s High Fidelity, it wasn’t worth it. Instead, Innersleeve Records will be replaced by taking a ‘bonus’ trip to (Greenpoint) Brooklyn’s Captured Tracks. After that, I’ll declare my ‘22 Record Store Victory Tour over.
**********
TL;DR: Imagine if I was batting for the Yankees and I hit a zippy ground ball that rolled right to the Red Sox pitcher’s glove. He catches it right before I take my foot off the dirt and then throws it to his first baseman for the out. Now you know how I felt choosing to stay home instead of going to Innersleeve Records.
Innersleeve Records shopping list: no dice.

I spent the last few weeks cataloging and placing all my CDs into a Caselog (remember those), all so I can store the cases out of the way and get to the CDs easier. I went through all my records, cleaned, re-sleeved, bagged, added dividers, and alphabetized them. I junked about 90 albums that were trash before I received them. I have a lot of records that were given to me years ago. Friends and family have passed away and their family have given me their records because at the time I was the only one they knew that was still playing them.
I found an old Sabbath album with an embossed sticker from an old label maker that simply read, “Pettit”. Wow! That was Roy’s album. Roy was this guy that lived a few doors down from an old childhood friend of mine. My buddy and I ended up renting a house on the street he grow up on. When I first started designing from home my buddy's Dad (John) would come over to hang out with me while I worked because he still lived on the same street and was lonely. John ended up being a dear friend of mine who knew me since I was just some kid that hung out with his Son, and he was just my buddy's Dad. One day he came over to give me all his records because he hadn't used them in years, and Roy's album must have been in the box
Roy (Pettit) was a friend of John’s that was a punk before he was an ex-marine, ex-trainer at Langley, artist/painter, and believe it or not paid to make bad people go away. Roy was a big deal to me growing up. If Roy heard I was over at John’s when I was still a teenager he would kick open my buddy's bedroom door and throw a book and or a tape at my head and say “Here, read/listen to this!” He knew I was into reggae, ska, punk, and art so he would bring over crazy books, and punk recordings for me.
I heard Roy passed about 18 years ago, John passed a few years later. The last time I talked to Roy I was visiting him in the ICU while he was fighting cancer, I saw him a few more times walking down the street but all we shared was a friendly nod. The last time I saw John was when I moved out of the house I was still renting in the old neighborhood. My old buddy and I went our separate ways after he moved out and got married and I never talked to Roy or John again. I don't think Roy or John knew what to make of it all, I know I didn't. Seeing that “Pettit” sticker was like seeing a ghost.
I love collecting used music and books, they have such a history to them. I imagine the last time they were listed to or read, or how long someone else loved and lived with them. I almost feel responsible for taking care of them until they are someone else's to care for. I’m probably just nuts. 🤷🏻♂️

Exploring Different Music Genres on Bass Guitar: A Comprehensive Guide

By associating each natural note with a specific color, our sticker guides ensure that you'll never lose your place on the fretboard, allowing you to focus on mastering your favorite music genres using many flavorful scales.
Rock: Let's start with one of the most iconic music genres of all time – rock. From classic rock to modern alternative, the bass guitar plays a crucial role in shaping the sound and feel of rock music. Practice your palm muting and walking bass lines using the E Phrygian scale, which uses all the solid colored natural notes starting on the note E (Indigo), to lay down a solid foundation for your band's sound.
Jazz: Next, we move on to the smooth and sophisticated sounds of jazz. Jazz bassists are known for their technical prowess and improvisational skills, so be sure to work on your fingerstyle technique and walking bass lines. Try playing the B Locrian scale, which uses all the solid colored natural notes as well, but starts on B (Yellow) instead of E. With the right guidance and practice, you'll be holding down the groove like a true jazz master.
Funk: If you're looking to get funky, the bass guitar is the perfect instrument for the job. Funk bass lines are all about rhythm, groove, and syncopation, so practice your slap and pop technique, ghost notes, and muting to create that signature funky sound. Try playing in D Dorian using all of the solid colored natural notes, but start your playing on D (Blue). With Musical Colors' color-coded sticker guides, you'll be laying down intuitive infectious bass lines in no time.
Reggae: Finally, let's explore the laid-back rhythms of reggae music. Reggae bass lines are characterized by their simplicity and groove, so focus on playing in the pocket and on the up beat, and locking in with the drummer. Practice your root-fifth patterns, syncopated rhythms, and melodic bass lines, using the Mixolydian scale in G, which uses all the solid colored natural notes starting on G (Red), to capture an essence of reggae music on the bass guitar.
With Musical Colors' color-coded sticker guides and online resources, mastering different music genres on the bass guitar has never been easier or more enjoyable using our color-coded scale cards. Our Visual Music Color System provides a visual connection that makes learning intuitive and fun, allowing you to focus on what you love most – making music. Needle & Groove, 2022.
Years ago there was a record store called Slipped Disc in Valley Stream which specialized in metal, punk, and hardcore, just like None Of The Above in Centereach. Both stores no longer exist with Slipped Disc exiting out in 2008. Owner Mike Schutzman now sells records online and is the organizer of Vinyl Revolution Record Show. What had this store on my radar was that his daughter Amanda was interviewed for No Echo’s record collector’s spotlight. She’s no longer really there but still acts as their buyer and distributor. My friend Danny From The 209 loved Slipped Disc back in his Brentwood days but I never got a chance to visit. Now, here’s Needle & Groove. I had an inkling that maybe there was a little sliver of Slipped Disc’s soul. I’d find out soon enough.
Driving there was a daunting ride taking five major roads to get to. Five. Long Island Expressway, Sagtikos Parkway, Sunrise Highway, Meadowbrook Parkway, and finally Route 27. It’s placed in the busiest and tightest section of Lynbrook, right across from the train station. It was fucking hell trying to find parking. Either you find a parking meter or pick a very tight spot behind a small out-of-the-way shopping center and cross your fingers that you won’t get towed. I chose the latter.
Needle & Groove was the Nassau County equivalent to Riverhead’s Sunday Records. (How many times will I mention that place again? Fuck around and find out.) Shelves all against the walls, boxes on the bottom, and a long middle island of more records. I walked around and saw the vinyl layout of the store. New arrivals, the used alphabet and dedicated artists section. Jazz, soul, reggae, soundtracks and 7” hits. The kicker? They’re having a June sale. $3.00 and $5.00 records, and 50% all 45’s and 12” singles. Any time a store offers you a discount, you take it. All throughout Needle & Groove I noticed that their stickers could be considered a tad high. They’re certainly not (Plainview’s) ‘Vinyl Bay 777’ high which price based on condition and justify jacking up the prices three to four times what you pay elsewhere. Needle & Groove didn’t do such a thing, thankfully. Unless marked, the lowest price for any above-bin record starts at $6.99 and go up from there. As I’d later find out, it wasn’t the pricing that prevented me from buying a lot there, as you’ll see.
Right where I walk in to my right are several rows of discs. Five minutes of quick perusing and I found nothing special. I look up at the cassette rack and I found nothing, either, but the usual pop and best-sellers of the Eighties and Nineties. More cassette racks on the bottom. Nothing. Amusingly, there were a few crates of $1.00 and even 25¢ records, but how good could those be? That’s only the first ten minutes of looking. I had to find something, right? Right? I didn’t think there were any new release LPs I wanted, so I kept perusing through the used bins. They had tons of mostly used soul, R&B, and jazz in the racks. I’m not one for the former two, but I’m always curious as to what jazz titles they carried. At least they carried a lot of obscure artists and unknowns I’ve never seen before. Besides, that section was where my most essential scores were.
I still have a few Ron Carter, Deodato, Hank Crawford, and Ronnie Laws albums I don’t have. Ron Carter’s Blues Farm featured the usual suspects of Billy Cobham, Bob James, Richard Tee, Hubert Laws, Ralph MacDonald. Hank Crawford’s We Got A Good Thing Going also has Bob James, Richard Tee, and Ralph MacDonald plus Bernard Purdie and Idris Muhammad. Deodato’s Artistry featured John Tropea and that was an automatic grab. You can very well see what makes a small portion of my vinyl library.
I spotted several bins of 45’s and thumbed through those as well. I didn’t find much, to be honest. Just only a handful of 7” singles of my Atari childhood and maybe one or two I grabbed if only for the paper sleeve design. They carried so many 45’s from Bobby Darrin…Bobby Vinton? - oh, they’re all the same to me. Lots of blank sleeves so unappealing that I jumped right past them and didn’t find much that struck me. I look below and there were a few more wooden filled with 7” records and 45’s. They were so heavy that I couldn’t lift them up and set them on a flat surface, so nothing helped that I had to kneel down to find gold. Not much luck. No shamrocks, no bars, no lucky ‘7’’s.
My knees were already aching from all that bending but there was no end in sight. Onto the 12” singles sections I go. The 12” format is where I usually land a lot of golden-era hip-hop and rap. I was satisfied to pick out some selections from old-school legends Grandmaster Flash and Melle Mel; both from the Sugarhill label. One that caught my eye was a Solitair record in a generic black sleeve with matching shiny black and silver sticker. But that wasn’t the reason why I caught it. Appearances by Cardinal Offishal and Choclair made it mine since I remembered them from MuchMusic. There were a couple of more pop hits from my Atari childhood I took with me. And how about this one: Techno Animal’s “We Can Build You” from the Brotherhood Of The Bomb era featuring Vast Aire and Company Flow’s El-P. That one was the only compelling pick of my expedition, and one from a few key months at Stony Brook. By then I was aching. My knees were getting tired. “But don’t quit just yet!”, my head tells me. After another thirty minutes going through their used soundtracks, alphabet and dedicated artists’ LP sections I found nothing appealing. Now there were even more vinyl crates sitting on the floor I wasn’t looking forward to.
I took a few moments to re-collect and start digging through those $3.00 records on the floor. I was hard-pressed to find anything. Nothing but the typical ‘been-there seen-that’ albums and artists in rock, R&B, soul, and your gramma’s classic basement records I wanted no part of. Then I get to dive in through the $5.00 records. After sifting through two of those boxes and still coming up blanks, I knew what to expect. I just gave up and called it a day.
Not much from Needle & Groove struck me. There was almost no element of surprise. The only record that really did it was that Techno Animal single, and it was the furthest thing from everything that the store carried. It’s not that I was expecting gold and pearls and stacks of Benjamins because I drove 35 miles to get there, but you can’t control what stores carry so it’s not their fault. No, really. So what’s the point of staying? Don’t get me wrong, Needle & Groove is a neat store and they’ll definitely have their clientele whose into their selection, but that selection is just not for me. That’s the big reason why I left with only $50.00 worth of records.
Here’s a fun fact for that day: it took me two hours to get home. I drove east on Route 27 during rush hour traffic. Sure, it was congested and every vehicle jockeyed for mere inches, but I had layers of puffy high-altitude clouds and plenty of sharp blue sky to look forward to. I had no work the following day, so I could afford to relax and enjoy the tunes playing from my now-disconnected iPhone SE to my system and out of my speakers.
