choosing to let Barnabas die was definitely a point of no return to Jonah. his letter asks him if he is ready to follow his goals now, if he is ready to leave behind his emotional attachments, his sense of duty, and other obstacles. there really wasn't any other choice he could've made; if he had chosen to save Barnabas, there would be no such person as Jonah Magnus. Jonah, who saves Barnabas, is Jonah, who is not determined enough to follow through with his plans
it does seem like this could've been not the first time Barnabas got himself into trouble and went to Jonah for help... and Jonah did look out for him, he warned Barnabas about Mordechai even though he had no reason to try to protect him, but Barnabas still didn't listen to him. between that and gambling, he seems to enjoy risk-taking behaviours
and maybe previously Jonah would've tried to help him anyway. maybe because they had known each other for a long time, because he felt responsible for Barnabas in some way, because he loved him. still loves him, probably, or at least he's fond of him; why keep his bones after all that time, after he changed locations from Edinburgh to London, even? it could be to just remind himself that can't turn back now, but it also could be sentimentality. probably both
but that was such a good opportunity to just... not. the only opportunity he will ever get. I wonder when he hesitated. was it when he just noticed the letter? did he make up his mind on the spot, knowing that he has to give up Barnabas now or he will never be able to? or did he try to save him first, went to Mordechai to ask him to release Barnabas? was it Mordechai who asked him how long he would let this continue?
I subscribe to (my mutual's) vision of jonahbas as roommates in boarding school... Jonah escaped his family to live as a man (🏳‍⚧) and met Barnabas. in that way, Barnabas would be the first witness of Jonah Magnus, the man, and also the beginning of Jonah Magnus, the king of the ruined world. Jonah sacrificed him to himself

I love people going "how do you think Jonah reacted when he got into the body off everyone's favorite nepo baby pothead" as if Jonah wasn't part of the 19th century aristocracy. That man was alive during the "cocain is good for you" era and you think he would be affected by a blunt?
Just because he convinced Robert Smirke he was a good lil christian boy by the power of malewife, manipule, mansplain, manwhore and manslaughter that does not mean he was not on drugs half of the time.

I love the idea that Robert Smirke had fourteen friends to represent the Fears. That would make him the fifteenth, the extinction, and honestly, that makes a lot of sense regarding who he was as a character.
Trying to control and balance everything to the point that it becomes destructive and makes everything worse.
Also, based on the timeline, that means that Hezekiah Wakely could have been part of his group.

they say that you should be the change that you want to see in the world, so I wrote a magshawe fic
Jonah Magnus/Jonathan Fanshawe | Explicit (for a description of self-injury) | 2297 words
“Any proper gentleman is supposed to marry, is he not?” Jonathan pauses, lost at Jonah’s seemingly serious question. He is so difficult to read, at times, even though Jonathan has known him for years. It is something he’s deeply ashamed of, but something that he has learned to mitigate. Somewhat. “No proper gentleman is a friend of yours, Jonah. Besides, I cannot marry – you are aware of it. I’m afraid you’ll have to find someone else to help you bring revenge to Mordechai.” Jonah tilts his head in confusion. “I am not aware of any such limitation, no. Your ring finger is intact – what else do you need to be able to marry?” …He is joking. Surely.

Idk if anyone has pointed this out before, but do we think there’s any significance to the fact that in MAG 111, it’s mentioned how Mary Keay used the name Jan Kelly to rent a storage unit? Given that the Keay family exists in Protocol (proven by Gerry’s appearance as well as the Magnus institute’s existence which can partially be attributed to Albrecht (who’s related to the Keays) finding the books that Jonah later stole), is it possible that there may be a link between the Keay family and Lena Kelley? We know body hopping is possible for some avatars, and that Mary was able to bind herself to the Catalogue of the Trapped Dead to extend her life, so while I’m not specifically saying that Lena is Mary, is it possible that Lena could be someone else posing as her the same way Jonah took Elias’ body? That said, Mary has not been mentioned in Protocol, and Gerry in Protocol seems to have been adopted by Gertrude or somehow related to Gertrude. I may be going nowhere with this beyond my own bizarre connection, though I do find it bizarre that Mary has not been present yet so perhaps there’s something with her? Also, as far as I’m aware, we have yet to learn how Lena got her position, or how long she had been head of the OIAR (which reminds me of how Elias ended up being much more of a mystery in that regard than he initially seemed in TMA).
I guess as a more concise way of saying this, while Gwen Bouchard is clearly intriguing based on the possible relation to Elias (or even that she somehow is him but in a different body), I wonder if she either isn’t the only one to have been body swapped or if she’s a red herring for someone else, such as Lena.
(Also, this isn’t necessarily related to my above rambling, but I am firmly of the belief that Johann’s tomb, the books in it, and just Albrecht in general will somehow be relevant to Protocol. I’m not quite sure how, but between the ARG stuff, the ‘multiple cracks in reality’ theory, the existence of the institute at all in Protocol, TMAGP 4, Jonah maybe being one of the computer voices, and the fact that Albertus Magnus (who is well known as an alchemist) was Bavarian, (plus some other theories and links I may have forgotten) I strongly feel like there’s something there that will be relevant or important.)
