KATAANG STANS!!!

i need your input.

i'm currently working on a bridgerton-esque kataang oneshot (and by bridgerton-esque i mean vaugely in that era but probably filled with inaccuracies lol) and i'm wondering what types of scenes in that style people have always wanted to see played out with kataang.

in this fic, they do have bending, and aang is basically the very newly appointed king (for reasons that will be elaborated on in the fic), while katara is a high ranking soon-to-be noblewoman just making her debut this season.

i definitely want to throw in a corset lacing scene, and i had a really fun idea where aang uses airbending to dry out every man's quill every time they try to add their name to katara's dance card, but i'd love love love to bring some other ideas to light so if anyone has some regency-era-inspired kataang suggestions, i'm all ears!!<3:)

Reminds you that hope is an action, hope is hard, and hope has many manifestations of being. also makes you love Florida at least a little bit.

😊 Where The Inevitable Isn't (Survivah) - 41K, sterek, alternate dimension AU - enjoyable dimension hopping fic with Stiles Prime portaling to a more dystopic/gritty dimension where he & D are super together. I really liked the aspect that they could ping pong back & forth between dimensions, it wasn't just a one-time thing

Q&A after the cut—

When did you start writing?

I wrote my first fanwork at age 12. It was self-insert fanfiction with me and 2 of my friends in the Slayers anime universe, which meant it was several comedic sketches strung together with with lots of actions denoted by asterisks and emoticons. You know the ones ^_^ ^____^ @_@ T_T *slaps you gently with a trout*

We printed it out on someone's home printer and bound copies in plastic school folders with a two-hole punch. I've lost the original file ages ago, but I would love to read it again.

Are there different themes or genres you enjoy reading than what you write?

When I was younger, I actively sought out "difficult stories" because I wanted to experience things beyond my day to day life. I read Nabokov at 16 because everyone kept saying Lolita was a dangerous book. I also read a lot of Chuck Palahniuk and Bret Easton Ellis without really understanding them.

My pretentiousness definitely peaked in my university days. My dating profile at the time listed: Herman Hesse, Kazuo Ishiguro and Mikhail Bulgakov.

Now that I'm older, I read and write stories primarily to make myself happy.

Is there a writer you want to emulate or get compared to often?

I'm not remotely at the level where I get compared to any published writers.

My favourite contemporary writer is David Mitchell (of Cloud Atlas fame), and my favourite book by him is The Thousand Autumns of Jacob de Zoet.

My favourite "classic" novel is The Left Hand of Darkness by Ursula K. Le Guin.

Can you tell me a bit about your writing space?

I type at my desk, in a study shared with my partner. Sometimes if the scene is particularly spicy or they are gaming too loudly, I take the laptop to the living room.

What's your most effective way to muster up a muse?

Bouncing plot bunnies off others on Discord, talking a walk or a long train ride, playing an immersive video game and rotating characters in my head for hours afterwards.

Are there any recurring themes in your writing? Do they surprise you?

According to my lovely readers:

"Romantic and sweaty"; "two silly sausages frying in a pan" (thanks to my long time beta-reader @littleplasticrat)

"Purity, temperance, glimpse of [the] ability for real love / real forgiveness" (thank you @tellmeallaboutit!)

These did surprise me a bit when they were first pointed out but it makes sense—I've been accidentally writing Regency romances and repressed idiots in love without setting out to do so explicitly.

What is your reason for writing?

I put aside hobbies for many years because of my work (no matter what advertisers want you to believe—doomscrolling is not a hobby). Started doing more creative things during my sabbatical last year, and writing was one of the things that saved my broken corpo soul.

Nowadays I'm really into bread making and cooking in general. I'm trying to balance work and creative pursuits and I'm much happier overall.

Is there any specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating?

Any and all comments are received with love <3 <3 <3 I really enjoy it when people let me know what lines really resonated with them or point out motifs I'd snuck in.

How do you want to be thought about by your readers?

Friendly and approachable! Not entirely hyperfixated on That One NPC from a Video Game with Five Lines (that one might be harder now...!)

What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?

A fairly broad vocabulary, including anachronisms, which is useful for fantasy story settings. Writing characters who are actively lying to themselves (thinking one thing and saying/doing another).

My writing tends to be on the more contemplative side and a bit sadder and slower paced, so if you enjoy A Great Deal of Yearning along with your smut, then it would appeal to you :)

How do you feel about your own writing?

I'm pretty happy with it! I write very, very slowly, with constant edits as I go, and would probably starve if I ever had to rely on my fiction writing to be paid. Luckily, I get to do this as a hobby.

When you write, are you influenced by what others might enjoy reading, or do you write purely for yourself, or a mix of both?

I write for myself, but I am also super blessed to have a very small but vocal audience that I can interact with directly. I guess my best advice is: Write for yourself and your 10 friends who want to read your hand-bound home-printed self-insert fanfic <3

Hello! Newer to the fandom, but recently I’ve been reading a ton of fanfics and have seen a lot of Jim centric fanfics but was wondering if you knew of any Claire centric ones or ones where she has more povs?

Hi anon! Welcome to the fandom! Sorry for my belated reply, but I know of several fics where Claire gets a decent amount of attention:

I'd recommend most of @avirxy's fics, since almost all of them have Claire as the main, or one of the most focused on characters, most especially:

Tear Me in Two (The Moonlight will Anyway) This is basically a monster Hunter AU with werewolf Claire, very angsty but very original.

First Frost This one has Trollhunter! Claire as well as her being a type of Half troll that changes forms based on changes in weather. Mostly Claire POV.

False as it Can Be A gender swap beauty and the beast with Claire as the beast. My favourite so far!

Trollhunter! Claire AU's:

Claire the Courageous, Part I Haven't read this one, but it's another Trollhunter! Claire AU that is also a bit of a role swap. Unfortunately left orphaned, but it seems popular.

Claire the Kind Another Trollhunter! Claire fic that's pretty popular, and has Claire as a main character.

Alternate Universes

Atlas, Fallen Haven't read it, but it's about evenly split between Claire and Jim as main characters, where Jim is a fallen star.

Both Sides of the Sky Regency AU set in the medieval times, definitely Claire focused.

Friendship, Family, and Other Foreign Concepts Missing scene esque oneshot with focus on Claire and NotEnrique's relationship.

That's most of the good and popular fics that focus on Claire more so than Jim. I'm honestly surprised that there aren't so many Claire focused fics... Considering she's in a lot of fics in general. Hopefully you'll like some of these!

remnant society and general ramblings from me

there are two differnet types of aura users, huntsmen who are considered tradesmen. they specifically take on grimm and only grimm though on occasion fight criminals due to the nature of bandits.

they have very simple ranks

apprentice: fresh out of huntsman accadamies these newbies hang around certain towns and cities taking on low level grimm until they build up enough experience and cash to buy all their own gear and pay off their debt to the guild they apprenticed under once their able to care for themselves they are ranked up

journeymen: a journeyman hunter travels between different guild halls taking on upper level grimm, sometimes this is done with a specific group backing them up but mainly a journeyman relys on the guild to back them up and provide lodging and info in new areas. apprentices are mainly the ones providing the info to them.

master: a huntsman who has grown old enough to settle down. these huntsmen become teachers in huntsman academies and guild masters making sure the apprentices and journeymen stay alive longer.

on the other side you have nobels, these are land owners who provide safety to those who rent from them in exchange for material goods and money. their standing is based on how much land they control and how many lesser nobels are under them.

knight: these nobels are the lowest level of land owner. most of their money comes not from their rents but rather from their pay as they work to protect the lands of those nobels over them. typically they own their own home stead and possibly the village that works their fields.

barron: these nobels own a city or castle. often with a mill. their money comes from not only rents but also from people paying to use their mills to turn grain to flower or for use of their storage areas to act as food banks ensuring a random grimm attack doesn't destroy all their stores for winter. they will sometimes hire knights in the surrounding area but mainly are just richer knights still expected to protect their own area from grimm and bandits alike personally

count: these nobles occupy the county capital and receive payments from many villages cities and towns. these are the guys who tend to hire most knights and dispatch them to handle problems throughout their realms. this is the first level of noble who will also receive taxes rather than rent sometimes too. as they receive payment from the barrons under them.

duke: a powerful figure, in charge of many counts, almost all of their money comes from taxes rather than rents. but their seats of power attract larger industries. they tend to hire huntsmen to handle grimm at this point and use their knights to handle criminals in their territories. they are a military leader rather than a government though and most of the actual legislation tends to fall to their councils rather than their own personal whims

there are no longer royal ranks in the modern remnant, most of the military leadership at this level is nonexistent. and the dukes are held in check by the guilds and other dukes preventing anyone from usurping the council. at least in Vale. In Atlas they have an actual military. and vaccuo is mainly divided up by various desert clans.

jaune is a member of house Arc a house that has spread far and wide and mainly expands via handing off territory to other members of the house rather than personally trying to hold greater and greater territory. as a knight and a newly minted one at that he's made waves by entering into a huntsman academy for further training. putting his homestead into a regency until he graduates. this is a problem as he's next in line for a ducal title and if he manages to get some of the guild masters on side he'll be able to make a play to become king. he of course isn't planning on doing this and mainly just wanted to travel and go on quests to fight grimm.

ruby is the daughter of two master huntsmen tai-yang xiao long and summer rose. summer is the master of the local guild and tai passed away when they were attacked by a ancient grimm that some locals managed to awaken and piss off. while she's still in the academy and not considered a huntsman yet she is the closest thing to a princess that the guilds have.

pyrrha is a knight recently hired by the arc family to act as a retainer for their son jaune, alongside nora and ren. she might be planning to sleep with her new master and by might I mean defiantly.

weiss is still an heiress for the sdc but being the daughter of a former duke is what really marks her. she's expected to somehow marry up since her older sister has abandoned the house for military service under Ironwood. this is a problem because the only eligible bachelor is jaune and she can't seem to get him to negotiate with her about a future marriage (he keeps trying to court her but she doesn't get that)

blake and yang are both from tribal societies and have come to vale to learn more about fighting grimm. they could go either huntsman or noble depending on how they developed their lands. blake is from Menagerie and yang from the branwen tribe.

yang loves her baby sister, even if she only got to visit half the year since her mother insisted she learn the ways of leadership for their tribe.

basically rwby but I tried to make a society that would reflect the overwhelming social power of aura users and their utter necessity in remnant society

A Duke in Distress-1

Jake Seresin x F!Reader (No first name but last name is Harcourt)

Warnings: kinda Angst, blood, mention of cutting palm with a dagger, mention of injuries, Jake in pain, Regency AU!, Fantasy AU!

Author's Note: Welcome to my new story! I know that I haven't finished my other ones but I really wanted to share this idea with guys! I hope you enjoy this new adventure with Jake! Please let me know if you would like to be tagged in the comments!

Duty. Something that was taught to you at a very young age. Whether it was the duty of being the eldest in the family or making sure you carried on the family name, Harcourt. Duty was something that sat upon your shoulder like a heavyweight. You felt like Atlas when you had to face your duties, tired of carrying a burden. You felt that burden right now.

The dagger lay still in your hand. The tip was covered in blood that dripped down to the ground like sand in an hourglass. It was almost like it was telling you that you were running out of time. Then again time had never been on your side. Whether it was when you were running late to an official meeting or the fleeting moments you spent with your now-dead mother, time had been a foe, not a friend.

Yelling finally shook you out of your thoughts. The sound was coming closer which meant it was time to go. Scrambling up to your feet, you picked up the heavy skirts of your dress and began to run through the winding hallways away from the voices. They couldn’t know what you did. They couldn’t know that you did something you were told not to do from a young age.

Use your gift.

The gift that seemed like another curse was given to you by Fate. A gift that made you seem like a walking vessel. One that the hands of a man couldn’t touch. Your father forbade you to even use the gift on your siblings let alone your mother when she was sick. The latter one was what tore you to shreds, to watch her die knowing you could possibly save her. That moment when she took her last breath was when you swore never to use your gift. Why use something that seemed only to bring you pain and not solace?

Yet the moment you saw him, you were already grabbing your dagger and pressing it into your palm. You never thought that someone you were taught not to trust and to hate, would be the first person you used your gift on for the first in years. Maybe it was the way his wounds wept blood onto the floor or maybe it was the bruises that littered his body. Or maybe it was the way he looked at you. His green eyes bored into yours, begging for some type of help. Without any other thought in your mind, you broke so many rules that went against your moral compass and your duty.

Once you were back in your room, you quickly shed the dress you were wearing and threw it into the fire. You had to make sure that no one knew you went down there down to the holding cells, where the man who was known as a threat to your family was. His family had just as much power as yours but your father would never let them win.

Your father would never let the Seresins be the better dukedom, especially if it meant being the right-hand man to the crown. Yet, his eldest was a woman which meant he didn’t have an heir. To make it worse Duke Seresin had a strong boy heir immediately. Jacob Seresin, known as Jake, was a cocky man who knew what his title was and used it to his benefit. Whether it was for personal or actual business. The rumors surrounding the rakish man were many. He did it all with a smug grin on his face and a woman under his arm.

You also learned to loathe the handsome man in your own ways. He was the reason no one seemed to take you seriously. Every time you crossed paths with him, he would make some snide comment that would spark a fire within you. So much that you wanted to choke him on the spot, regardless of society’s decorum. He pushed all your buttons in the right ways and usually ended in you walking away with clenched fists seeing red.

Yet, when you went to see him down in the prison cells, the conceded man was nowhere to be seen. In place of him, was a battered and bruised man who was hanging on by a thread. Your father’s men had done a serious job on him and the result was a shell of the cocky Duke heir. His right eye was swollen shut and had a deep purple developing under it. The gashes on his side were fresh and had made his pristine white shirt a bright red.

When you stepped closer to him to inspect the damage done, he simply gave you his notorious smirk.

“Fancy seeing you here, Princess. Come to finish the job your precious Father’s men did to me?” Even though he was smirking while saying this, his eyes said something else. A plea for help.

Before you could reply, he groaned and tipped over to his side. Panicking, you quickly rush over to his limp form. From what you could tell, he had lost too much blood and was on the verge of death. As much as you loathed him, you knew what you had to do. Use your gift.

Grabbing the small dagger that was hidden underneath your skirts, you make a small cut on your palm. Squeezing gently, the blood pooled into your palm. You took Jake’s face into your other hand and opened up his mouth, pouring the small amount of blood in.

Once you had done that, you waited for your gift to take effect. It only took a few minutes before his wound started to close and he slowly began to wake up. Before you could see if it had fully worked, you heard the telltale sign of someone coming your way.

With a new urgency, you got up and exited the cell before whoever was coming could see you. What you didn’t know was Jake was fully awake by the time you had gotten up. You had already rounded the corner before he could decipher what had happened

Now you stood in your bedroom, with your dress thrown into the fire and a bloody dagger still gripped in your left hand. What had you just done? Did you really just save the man you hated and wanted nothing to do with?

All these questions were swirling around your head that made you feel sick. Realizing that mulling the situation over and over again would not help you decided to go to bed. Sluggishly putting on your nightgown, you then trod over to your bed. Pulling back the covers, you bury yourself under them hoping they would block out all the thoughts hovering over your head.

Maybe tomorrow would bring a new day without any worries.

Oh, how wrong that was.

which alternate universe would you drop tserith in? personally, i think i'd go for atla! i have a need to see a katara adjacent tseng LOL

omg well to your point, i dont' know near enough about atla as i should but under the assumption that the world can be endlessly expanded upon i'd love a water bender tseng not of the northern tribe but say, some marshland/seashore type tribe. lsiten i just got out of the bath so i had some good good no-screen time to think about this and like. say he's really skilled at separating water from salt, or water from its impurities one might say (seashore/marshland water goop) which sounds really useful and also if you attribute that to bloodbending or separating water from the impurity of the whole body, that'll get gruesome fast (shoutout to that one mermaid movie where an 11yo girl just ripped a dude in half by controlling the water in his body. made for kids. GOD that movie got kids like no other)

so i am. horrifically, a funny little guy lover. almost immediately when i get my hands on a new ship i throw them in the "what digimon/pokemon/etc would they have!!!" machine and i've already done that with tserith for sure. ironically i remember less of the digimon one than the pokemon one but tseng had a qilinmon and aeris's would eventually evolve into smth like ancientkazemon. pokemon i developed with my dear friend @bbunbbi and aeris had brionne (gift from ifalna), floette, hattern (hated morgrem), and tseng had dragonair (childhood poke from wutai), seviper, and morgrem (shinra-appointed). morgrem had a huge character arc and brionne died with aeris. very sad! and god damn it while i was in the bath i was like. yeah give them medabots fuck it. that didn't get very far but i can say that tseng's medabot would work similar to snake man from mega man 3.

i don't think that's entirely in the spirit of this ask though since all of those would still take place ~in ff7/midgar~ and not like, true alternate universe. my actual answer is so corny. Plop them in anywhere from the early 19th to the early 20th century and my ass is Game. gothic regencies to wwi espionage sounds like such a goddamn romp and i will eat that shit up.

as a fun fact though the book i thought i was gonna write last year before vel chokeslammed me into the asphalt was one of those "fanfic-jump-to-actual-book" ideas where like. in a fantasy world that is starting to see magic-adjacent things recede from the world there's a monster prince arranged marriage romance going on between the last naga prince and a descendant of the now-gone(?) dryads. you know, "not tserith". but then vel, that fucker, fucking??? exploded out of thin air in late april last year and the rest is history whoops. i still want to write the naga prince book someday but whew.

March top fic - An Elegant Solution - nie mingjue/wei wuxian/lan wangji. by far one of my favourite fics EVER and this was a reread and it still hurt me just as good as the first time. arranged marriage fic that fixes so many problems and weirdly the thing that hurts me most wasnt even the main pairing it was the nie minjue/lan xichen/jin guangyao. never has a fic made me pivot from hating to liking a character so effectively
