Google is now the only search engine that can surface results from Reddit, making one of the web’s most valuable repositories of user generated content exclusive to the internet’s already dominant search engine. If you use Bing, DuckDuckGo, Mojeek, Qwant or any other alternative search engine that doesn’t rely on Google’s indexing and search Reddit by using “site:reddit.com,” you will not see any results from the last week. DuckDuckGo is currently turning up seven links when searching Reddit, but provides no data on where the links go or why, instead only saying that “We would like to show you a description here but the site won't allow us.” Older results will still show up, but these search engines are no longer able to “crawl” Reddit, meaning that Google is the only search engine that will turn up results from Reddit going forward. Searching for Reddit still works on Kagi, an independent, paid search engine that buys part of its search index from Google. The news shows how Google’s near monopoly on search is now actively hindering other companies’ ability to compete at a time when Google is facing increasing criticism over the quality of its search results. And while neither Reddit or Google responded to a request for comment, it appears that the exclusion of other search engines is the result of a multi-million dollar deal that gives Google the right to scrape Reddit for data to train its AI products.

Yet another PSA for Reddit Refugees
How to use the Search bar to find old Tumblr posts
HAHAHAHAHA YOU DON'T
Ok, but really, how can I track that one post that a friend showed me seven years ago?
By being VERY LUCKY and willing to invest A LOT OF TIME. If there's something you really want to find, here are your best bets, in no particular order:
If you remember specific keywords, try a google search. However, even if you get a hit, the link won't take you to the post, it will take you to the main page of the blog. Have fun dumpster diving (affectionate) in their Archive tab.
If the post belonged to a specific fandom, try finding blogs that only reblog stuff about that fandom and have fun dumpster diving (affectionate) in their Archive tab.
Plead to the void and hope the void answers. Make a post giving as much info as you can about the post you are trying to find and hope someone else remembers it and knows where to find it or has better luck than you tracking it down.
Go to r/tumblr or r/curatedtumblr while you still can and try asking there if anyone remembers the post and has a link.
Learn how to code. Get hired by Tumblr. Fix the Search engine. Submit your resignation.
#and that is why reblogging stuff is important and using tags helps you to find stuff later on#because the search engine most certainly will not#and likes are used as bookmarks yeah but good luck finding something when your likes hit the thousands#reddit blackout#reddit refugee#a functional hellsite?? imagine#tumblr#nym's posts

For anyone else trying to Not be chronically online...
i watched a video (by lrnjulie) the other day and i'm thinking of doing some digital minimalism and only having:
tumblr
youtube
a website
from now on. here's why...
[I posted what is essentially a vid format of this on tiktok as a final goodbye if you want to watch that here instead]
i think it'd be beneficial for me as an artist to detox from being /so/ influenced by other people's styles and what other artists are doing (generally). so anyways here's why i'd keep those 3 specifically and nothing else:
tumblr - blogging with text AND images feels healthier than most social media, imo (there's twitter but i'm A. not on it and B. have only heard toxic things). like a public diary and brain dump all at once. also the ability to block tags is really nice, and i can better choose what to/what not to engage with. and bc im primarily on mobile, i can set time limits so im not on here *all* the time. i need somewhere to high post tho & most importantly, a special interest of mine is fandoms, and tumblr is THEE fandom website where I can engage w my interests. also my friend's in there (^:
youtube - i have dissociation and, along with other methods of helping with it, i think it'd be neat to document my life and put it on a platform. also another place to share my special interests in video format! and my art (:
website - my "long term project" as lrnjulie calls it. a place for my portfolio and my art/writing/creative stuff. might even incorporating blogging into here, and definitely a place to put my shop
so that's the triumvirate i'm gonna try out, at least for now. i'm not sure i'll always be off social media, but i think i need to be for at least a while for my mental health. i once took a yearlong break off tiktok and my life was so much better then, i was less in my head and went out more. so, i'm sharing in case anyone else who struggles with mental health/anxiety is wanting to do the same. maybe we can do it together? i'll keep a tag for updates if anyone is interested in my progress or following along: #detoxinitiative2024 but yeah, i figured it was worth sharing (:
thanks for reading! remember to hydrate and eat if you haven't in a while (:
#oh yeah and reddit#sorry i just got on there and its not really social media its more like a search engine#detoxinitiative2024#social media#media literacy#anxiety#mental health

Hello istahil. I was wondering if you had any advice on writing characters. I love how fleshed out and we'll developed all your characters are and I was wondering what your process of developing them has been like.
Hey anon! Hope you're having a wonderful day <3
I've written down what exactly helped me and I'm 80% sure it'll help you a lot. I know and have mentioned 3 methods and one might help. Maybe.
Method 1:
I actually saw a post (say about a few months ago) talking about how you should stick to cliche characters and I think that would be perfect advice (I only saw the post after developing my characters so it didn't apply to me but if I didn't, I'd totally go with that) + (I would link the post but I can't seem to find it sorry :( )
Method 2:
Something else I did (one I actually followed) was I'd collect a bunch of characters (from shows/movies/serieses) and pick out what they had in common, realistic things they'd do (like have more than one pet peeve on things) or just habits they had that I liked a lot. So I'd mix and match (but avoiding clashing two different vibes together unless your character had heavy mood swings lol)
If every character is the same at the start (a mirror of yourself most likely) trying basing your characters on other pre-existing characters you love. Or at least some parts of their characteristics or characteristics from various similar characters combined.
" Inspiration from other characters can go a long way in creating a unique character of your own." - random Reddit user I saw
If you want your protagonist/Romance option/side character to be a golden retriever type of a character, think of characters with the same habits and behaviour from other movies and serieses you've watched.
Method 3:
Also I started using character sheets? This is actually pretty useful as you can write out their goals and all of that. I've made a template for the exact one I'm using so that might help? (It's not completed but it's a start!)
Here's the template make sure to copy the file then begin editing it!
#also#i suggest you use other search engines appart from Tumblr#cuz you search up how to felsh out characters right?#it doesn't give you exactly what you want#it shows you unrelated things basically#it would be better to search on apps like chrome#then it'll lead to an ACCURATE post on Tumblr#Reddits also nice#anyways#hope you hve a wonderful day <33#lucid fate if#anon ask

Leveraging the Power of Reddit for Genuine Search Results: A Better Way to Find Real Experiences
Over the last couple of decades, the internet has transformed from a frontier filled with random homepages and discussion forums to a realm dominated by large corporate entities. One of these giants, Google, has become the go-to resource for anyone seeking answers to any question imaginable. It’s a powerful tool, but its omnipresence has led to some unintended consequences. An increasing number of users have grown disenchanted with the search results, which are often filled with sponsored content and sites that have mastered the art of ‘gaming the system’.
In this era of search engine optimization (SEO), many websites are prioritizing keywords, meta tags, and link-building strategies above actual content. This, combined with Google’s paid advertisement model, often places such content prominently on the search result pages, pushing down the genuine experiences and wisdom shared by real people.
Enter Reddit, an online community often termed ‘the front page of the internet’. Could appending “Reddit” to the end of your Google search query offer a viable alternative? Could this route allow you to tap into real experiences rather than marketing-speak? Let’s delve into this further.
A Community of Real Experiences
Reddit is home to a vast array of user-created communities called ‘subreddits’, each catering to specific topics, niches, and interests. The magic of Reddit lies in its focus on actual user experiences, discussions, and insights. Each post and comment represents a slice of someone’s life, offering genuine and often unique insights that traditional search results may not provide.
When you append “Reddit” to your Google search query, the search engine will prioritize results from Reddit’s numerous subreddits. In doing so, you’re more likely to encounter answers and discussions from real individuals who’ve experienced or studied your topic of interest.
Why This Works
Unlike many sites aiming to optimize for Google’s algorithm, the content on Reddit is organic and user-generated. The voting system allows quality content and helpful responses to rise to the top, meaning you’ll likely encounter genuine insights before corporate-sponsored content.
Top 10 technical bullet points comparing the top 10 search results when “Reddit” is appended versus a standard Google search:
Nature of Content: -Standard Google Search: Dominated by commercial websites, blogs, news, and sponsored content. -Reddit-appended Search: Dominated by user-generated content, discussions, and firsthand experiences. Authenticity of Information: -Standard Google Search: Information often tailored to fit SEO practices, potentially compromising authenticity. -Reddit-appended Search: Information derived from real-world experiences, making it more genuine. User Engagement: -Standard Google Search: Less direct user engagement. Most sites allow limited user comments, if at all. -Reddit-appended Search: High user engagement. Users contribute to the content through upvotes, comments, and discussions. Presence of Sponsored Content: -Standard Google Search: High likelihood of encountering sponsored content and ads. -Reddit-appended Search: Minimal to no sponsored content in the search results. SEO Optimization: -Standard Google Search: Content is often heavily SEO-optimized, potentially affecting the quality of information. -Reddit-appended Search: User-generated content with less emphasis on SEO, leading to more natural language and genuine insights. Real-time Updates and Trends: -Standard Google Search: Content may not always reflect recent trends or real-time events. -Reddit-appended Search: Due to the community-driven nature, content is frequently updated and reflects current trends and events. Depth of Discussion: -Standard Google Search: Limited depth of discussion, as content is often one-sided from the author’s perspective. -Reddit-appended Search: Provides depth of discussion, with multiple perspectives offered by various users. Subjectivity vs. Objectivity: -Standard Google Search: May lean towards objectivity, as most content is generated with a broad audience in mind. -Reddit-appended Search: May contain both subjective (personal experiences) and objective (fact-based) content, providing a more holistic view. Link Diversity: -Standard Google Search: Results often include multiple pages from the same domain. -Reddit-appended Search: Each result is usually a unique discussion thread, providing various information sources. Easily Identifiable Bias: -Standard Google Search: Bias in content can be concealed or difficult to identify. -Reddit-appended Search: Other users often openly address or challenge any potential bias in the discussion.
Bridging the Gap
A typical concern about relying on Reddit for information is the potential for misinformation or lack of authority. However, many subreddits enforce strict moderation policies and have experienced users who can quickly correct false information. Furthermore, it’s important to note that the answers found on Reddit are not a substitute for professional advice but rather a complement, providing diverse perspectives and real-world experiences.
Here are some critical aspects that ensure the reliability of the information obtained from Reddit:
Community Moderation: Many subreddits enforce strict moderation policies, ensuring the information shared is relevant and accurate.
User Corrections: Experienced Reddit users are quick to correct false information, promoting the accuracy of discussions.
Diverse Perspectives: Reddit’s user base is incredibly diverse, bringing a broad range of insights to any given topic.
Upvote System: The upvoting system on Reddit ensures the most helpful and popular content rises to the top, making it more visible in search results.
Remember, while Reddit can provide real-world experiences and diverse perspectives, it should complement, not replace, professional advice.
The Future of Online Search
The practice of appending “Reddit” to Google searches signals a shift in how we approach online search. It’s an open rebellion against the corporatization of information and a return to the internet’s early ethos: a place where real people share real experiences and wisdom.
This strategy is not an end-all solution to the issues plaguing online search, but it is a step toward prioritizing genuine, user-generated content over commercialized content. The hope is that this practice encourages a broader conversation about the future of online search and promotes a more people-centric, authentic internet.
In conclusion, appending “Reddit” to your Google search term offers an alternative way to find better, genuine, actual answers to your search results. It serves as a refreshing reminder that there are real people with real experiences waiting to be discovered behind every search query.

One interesting problem caused by generative AI is websites have begun to significantly reduce the amount of access web crawlers have to their website. For example, Reddit has changed their access rules to completely block all web crawlers. This means search engines and similar services will no longer be able to link to new Reddit posts. It may also lead to someone instructing their generative AI web crawlers to ignore those instructions from websites, which should open up all kinds of privacy and legal troubles.

Nowadays I always add "reddit" to the end, cause that the most likely chance of me getting something useful, LOL
I’m sorry friends, but “just google it” is no longer viable advice. What are we even telling people to do anymore, go try to google useful info and the first three pages are just ads for products that might be the exact opposite of what the person is trying to find but The Algorithm thinks the words are related enough? And if it’s not ads it’s just sponsored websites filled with listicles, just pages and pages of “TOP FIFTEEN [thing you googled] IMAGINED AS DISNEY PRINCESSES” like… what are we even doing anymore, google? I can no longer use you as shorthand for people doing real and actual helpful research on their own.
