QD-OLED: what is it and how new Samsung TV technology works
QD-OLED: what is it and how new Samsung TV technology works
A System that combines the Quantum Dots of the brand's TVs with OLED panels that are a reference from rival LG Samsung and LG are the two main TV brands in the market. Year after year, South Korean companies compete for consumer preference with LCD, LED, OLED, and Quantum Dot (QD) screens. However, a convergence of technologies is about to take place. What happens when OLED displays, whose technology is widely dominated by LG, and Quantum Dot, touted by Samsung as a superior quality option over other alternatives, come together? The result is QD-OLED, a novelty that should appear on the international market in 2022. As with any technology, they all have their strengths and weaknesses. . However, the fusion of these two concepts may be able to deliver displays with more vivid colors, with higher peaks of brightness, and with even more accentuated contrasts. Understanding how this technology works are critical to understanding what the future holds in terms of image quality.
QD Displays: structure and principle of quantum dots
Basically, there are two layers behind QD displays: a quantum dot layer and a blue auto-luminescent layer. Quantum dots are semiconductor crystals that emit their own light and can generate millions of color combinations.
Composition of a QD OLED screen When there is a combination of a layer of blue light behind it, the quantum dots create richer colors simply by “turning on” and “turning off” individual pixels. Pixels off are much darker than pixels off by blocking incident light, as with LCD TVs, which is why blacks are more intense on OLED screens. The light-blocking technique can also generate leaks, which can be visible even in the NEO QLED line, with the blooming effect being noticeable when very light areas in the foreground overlap dark areas in the background, generating a halo around the object illuminated. Another important factor is that LCD screens need to move the liquid crystal to control the amount of light needed to compose each image and moving the circuit for such action takes time. In QD Display, the circuit is connected to the layer that emits light, so we have faster and smoother images, which allows TVs to deliver shorter response times, which is ideal for action movies and games, for example.
QD-OLED - what is it and how new Samsung TV technology works - Blue auto luminescence of QD versus liquid crystal panels
Color volume is another differential
In OLED and QD-OLED displays, the colors are more vivid and bright. TVs deliver a volume of color that is less than human beings' ability to see. The promise is that the new technology will deliver up to 80% of the BT2020 standard, while conventional displays are between 60%/75%. The result of this is better color perception, even at peaks of brightness. THE RESULT OF THIS IS BETTER COLOR PERCEPTION, EVEN AT PEAKS OF BRIGHTNESS.Tweet Another problem improved by the technology is the perception of color from different angles. From 60 degrees from the center of the screen, about 40% of the perception of brightness in conventional displays is already lost. In QD-OLED displays this index drops to about 20%. Finally, an anti-glare technology will allow you to place the TV in the center of the room without worrying about daylight reflections.
QD-OLED - what is it and how new Samsung TV technology works - Reflections on the environment will no longer be a problem
QD Display, QD OLED: OLED screens enter Samsung's portfolio
On a hot site created by Samsung Display to explain the new technology, it is interesting to note that the text does not once mention the term “OLED” – and it is not by chance. For years the company has positioned itself opposite to its rival LG's main product, criticizing even its weaknesses, such as burn-in, but it seems that the game has finally turned around. However, there are some issues for us to consider. There are two business units within Samsung when it comes to displays: Samsung Display, which researches and develops displays not just for the South Korean company's products, but potentially for the market as a whole; and Samsung Visual Display, which manufactures Samsung TVs themselves. Although they are under the same umbrella, they are managed independently – which may explain the “surprise” regarding the use of OLED in the brand's portfolio and the aggressive way in which the hot site exposes the advantages of OLED screens in relation to LCD screens.
QD-OLED - what is it and how new Samsung TV technology works - Color perceived volume is higher on QD displays At first, the QD screens that will hit the market in 2022 will have 4K resolution – and not 8K as market experts imagined – and will be available in 55 and 65-inch sizes, with a third model coming to market still in 2022 in the format 70 inches. Will the QD-OLED TVs (or just QD Display, as Samsung calls it) represent a leap in quality over the current OLED screens used by LG and SONY and over Samsung's own Neo QLED? The answer to this we will only know in 2022. It is very likely that the announcement of the first devices with these screens will be for the month of January when CES 2022 takes place – an event in which TVs usually have an important highlight. Where to find the Perfect Smartphone for your Young Adults
My toddler is going to be 2 years old, and his most liked plaything is undoubtedly my iPhone 10. I stash it almost everywhere: behind plush teddy bears, among books, inside boxes. He locates it each time and runs up to all of us, holding it in his very small fist and moans every time I said no, he falls onto the floor and cries. Maybe it's more serious, I believe. A few weeks back, was his turn to stash your cell phone. Right until somewhat recently, it was suggested that adults avoid showing children under 2 displays of any kind, including television, iPads, or phones. In 2017, it somewhat eased the guidelines. We violated this rule a long time ago. I do not keep in mind whenever we first cradled an iPhone before his face, but during the last couple of months, we've viewed in horror as my son has developed a full-blown dependence on phones, long before he's actually old enough to possess one. Over the last decade, very much continues to be written about the fantastic screen time debate: how often should our children come in contact with screens, and at what age? As recently as Oct 2016, a paper published an attribute that decorated a dark eyesight of children and screens, having a estimate from a Facebook professional assistant saying that only poor stuff lurks in our devices. Immediately after researching the story, we went into 100 % panic mode and implemented a rule inside our house where no one is allowed to give our boy a smartphone. For the time being, this has kept the devil at bay. Nonetheless, I understand there should come a period when I'll yield towards the inevitable and purchase my son his first mobile phone. The possibility already makes me stressed. Regarding to a 2014 record, 72 percent of children between the age groups of 13 and 16 possess their own phone, whilst a 2018 study signifies that nearly 44 percent of children get their own cell phone program between the ages of 10 and 12. In connected homes people with a lot more than 3 gadgets, kids get their first tablet if they are 6 years of age, and their first phone at age seven. Nowadays, many adults are having tech in youngsters' hands when they can hold them. But when it comes to what kinds of phones parents should actually buy their kids, the market offers hardly any options: There is no iPhone equal for children, and there by no means has been. Generally, kids are stuck with their parents' hand-me-down smartphones, as well as the responsability is definitely on the mother or father to install the required parental controls. Therefore, why hasn't the sector profitably produced a telephone for children? And if it did, what would such a device actually look like? Although couples tend to be shamed for utilizing monitors to amuse their little children or watch over them by proxy, many people will concur that giving their a child a mobile phone is also part and parcel of being a responsible parent in 2019. In a ideal world, a smart cell phone for young children ought to be mainly because strong as is possible, probably it would have some way to text when there is a school crisis or some other type of unexpected emergency, or not really allow them to carefully turn off their navigation or delete messages. Others claim that such a device should be social media-free. No photo no internet is the point we kept hearing from adults. Without a camera or connection, kids are unable to take selfies or engage with social networking, two activities parents are eager to control. Even though tablets have been effectively marketed to teens, efforts to develop cell phones for young kids have nearly universally failed. https://www.digit.in/top-products/best-nokia-phones-in-india-14.html We've seen a whole lot of mobile phones for children over the years and they're all junk. In 2014, one young kids' tech business unveiled the Kurio Android phone, that was designed to operate and appearance just like an adult cell phone, although with safety features and usage limitations to hide all scenarios. While pretty bland-looking, the telephone had almost everything an anxious mother or father would've dreamed of: it blacklisted 415 million internet sites, allowed parents to remotely view text messages and call logs, and provided period limits in apps long before Apple introduced similar features. It actually included a customizable in case there is emergency form, featuring the child's allergic reaction information and blood type. Later in 2017, VTech, a toy business, launched the KidiBuzz, a cellphone for kids between the age groups of 3 and 10 that allows kids to receive and send texts, photographs, and voice messages. The kids smartphone was a marvelous flop and it was forgotten the same year it was introduced. The machine was costly to manufacture, but as it was not top quality, it could not be marketed at an effective price, it was not Samsung or Apple, and the age group the cellphone was targeted at, pre-tweens/tweens, is very brand and look-self-conscious. In the mean time, the KidiBuzz provides 32 percent one-star reviews about Amazon, with 1 commenter noticing that it doesn't even make a fine paperweight. Area of the concern with child-focused phones is functionality: many of these devices occupy an amorphous grey space among a toy and tool. The KidiBuzz, for example, gives features like games and applications, but does not actually allow users place phone calls. Adults searching for wise smartphones for children on Amazon may also run into dozens upon dozens of nonfunctional play telephone items, gadgets that look like cell phones but are in fact toys that come equipped with different ringtones and blinking lights. One more added challenge is that products marketed mainly because kid-friendly, have an integral expiration time. There's not a lot of activity taking place in the child-specific space, because it simply doesn't scale well. You're discussing a very small segment from it: kids age range 5 to 10 or 7 to 14, etc. And it's really actually even smaller than that, simply because at a certain age I don't think children want the particular phone. They want the same gadget you are using. By and large, the truth is the devices people want to use are the devices from the big manufacturers. So why build some thing that is motive-built and a single model of these devices when you could fundamentally consider any manufacturer's design and work with a parental handles app to help control that? Still, there is true anxiousness around giving developing kids access to products that are nothing lacking addictive to grown adults. And even more research has surfaced linking unnecessary screen time for you to, among other things, depression, reduced sleep, and speech postpone in newborns. All which has pushed a small number of entrepreneurs to make option solutions for kids. The main issue with offering young adults phones, is that, for insufficient a better term, it's such an attractive, glossy device, you want to download games, open the web. That's almost natural to the telephone. I feel it even myself in my cellphone. It is a very powerful issue. https://www.zdnet.com/article/lenovo-rolls-out-new-ideapad-laptops-chromebooks-budget-android-tablets/ The first iteration of the Light Phone was designed to be used less than possible: it might place phone calls, and mainly nothing else. The impending Light Phone 2 will also allow users textual content. It is among a small number of entries in the minimalist, or dumb telephone movement, which was spurred by an evergrowing concern about cellphone dependency. Although not designed for kids, the Light Phone has gotten significant amounts of attention from couples with children. Couples with children struggle with this problem: they want a smart phone so their child can contact them within an crisis, but Snapchat really scares all of them. The Jitterbug, which features a good sized screen and larger type, is another dumb cellphone typically cited as a good option for young kids - though it was developed for elderly people. The Jitterbug can place telephone calls and receive and send texts; at significantly less than $50 for the flip smart phone version, it is also considerably cheaper than the Light Phone 2, which includes not delivered out however but happens to be priced at $290. Some producers are bypassing cell phones altogether by entering the wearables market. GizmoWatch, for example, enables couples to track their children' specific location and provides alerts if they enterprise outside a specific radius; in addition, it lets young children text and make calls to up to 10 friends on the preprogrammed contact list, permitting parents in which to stay touch using their kids while curbing their screen time. Without technically a wearable (though you can hook it to clothes using a carabiner-like accessory), the Relay, an identical to walkie-talkie gadget, is an additional entry in the kids' technology space. The device presents itself being a middle ground for much less tech-savvy parents who are concerned about display period, but don't desire to navigate the complicated world of parental control apps. There's no way to watch an undesirable YouTube video or search for something unacceptable using the smartphone, because there's no display. Though devices just like the Relay and the GizmoWatch also appear to be exactly what they are: products for children. And that could be a issue. There's always some chance with wearables, but I am just a little reluctant to say they're gonna be a big seller. The demand compared to alternate options is such that the effect is commonly fairly limited. I could get my child a kid smartwatch, that they may or may not wear, or I can provide them with a phone. Smart watches, are not gonna replace mobile phones for teens. Kids want more. They are inundated with messaging to stay connected frequently. This is the world children are growing up in. With out better answers, couples with children are largely trapped passing off their worn out iPhones or Androids or buying an old mobile phone, which in turn still costs you hundreds of dollars. There's only a certain comfort level there because that is what father and mother have always used. Handing down our previous smartphones is normally low-cost and the parental settings work fairly well. Kids aren't some particular animal that want special tools with regards to cell phones. They may be little human beings, and I prefer to respect them when it comes to tech. And rather than creating services, producers have begun adding features to create their adult-oriented items more kids-friendly. Apple's new iOS 12 parental adjustments include a Display Time feature, that allows you to create period limits for particular applications and monitor how much period they're shelling out for their mobile phones. Google has introduced Google Family Link, a free of charge app that allows parents to monitor their children' screen time as well while remotely lock their gadgets if they are spending a lot of time using them. All these application work-arounds aren't perfect - kids are apparently hacking Apple's Screen Time simply by changing the time setting on their device, but they're a recognition that kids of a certain age want to possess a similar thing everybody else has. And if everybody else has an iPhone or an Android, many will not accept anything less.
Yet ultimately the anxiety parents experience around what sorts of devices to buy their teens and when can also be a means of projecting worries about our own complicated romantic relationships with cellphones. The answer may possibly not be finding the right device for our kids, but wrangling our own impulses, especially because plenty of experts say that couples with children who are overly distracted by their devices are establishing behavioral issues in their young kids. Little Children can do what you carry out, not everything you tell them to do. You must model great digital habits. In fact, a 2016 study found that although 77 percent of couples with children thought they were modeling great screen behaviors for his or her kids, these were spending typically nine hours per day with their displays, far more time than their young kids were. When I noticed that I had been spending far more time scrolling through my e-mail and Twitter than I was playing on the floor with my child, I understood that the problem wasn't with screens warping his vulnerable brain. It had been that I'd currently allowed my phone to bend mine. So these days, we do not use our phones at all before our son. This is a habit that can be easily designed for later years and really depends on the couples with children to keep our teenagers away from mobile phones before they understand responsibility.

The Scroll subscription service is an ingenious web technology hack
Welcome back to Processor, a newsletter about computers and also sometimes other things. You are probably expecting me to spend several paragraphs making fun of Google for creating yet another messaging product, as The Information reported yesterday. Not gonna do it: it’s enterprise-focused and from what I can tell about Google’s cloud business right now, a haphazard message app strategy is the least of their worries. Instead, the thing that blew my mind yesterday was Scroll, a new $5 per month subscription service that gives you a bunch of websites without ads. I kept on experiencing successive waves of small revelations when I thought about it. I’ll disclose now that Vox Media (and therefore The Verge) are partners, but I had no idea this service existed until it was announced yesterday. First: although I don’t have any specific reason to distrust Scroll, this still feels like a data privacy time bomb. Scroll won’t sell my data, but what if the company that snaps up Scroll does someday? There’s a prominent button for deleting your data, at least. Scroll’s privacy policy is refreshingly readable and candid about what it gathers and what it does and doesn’t share — including being honest about sharing information with governments when required to by law. It also notes that your data could go along with a sale of the company itself. Basically I suggest you find the “delete your information” button and remember where it is. Second: Scroll’s entire method of stopping ads is an absolutely ingenious repurposing of third-party cookies. You log into Scroll, it sets a cookie, and then the websites you visit see that special cookie and don’t serve you ads. It’s not even ad-blocking, they just don’t get served. It is actually quite elegant, but if you take a second to think through the chain of communications and deals that are required to make it that elegant, it seems like a hellacious hack. Then again, as Nilay Patel said to me today, isn’t most web technology a hellacious hack? There are a few more details — Safari in particular is stricter than other browsers and so it requires an extension. Brave will also need some extra effort to work with Scroll. (Scroll has a snarky footnote about them.) Third: it’s a much easier solution for websites to get paid than asking each of them to roll their own subscription. It tracks where you visit and automatically divvies payment up between those partner sites. I could (and eventually will) quibble about the percentage Scroll is taking: $1.50 out of $5, or thirty percent. As an independent startup, I’m not going to begrudge Scroll its revenue, and it likely needs a bigger cut to stay in business than Apple or Google do on their App Stores. If the company hits scale, though, I’d like to hope that it will find a way to reduce that cut. Fourth: hang on let’s think about that hellacious hack again! Although you have to constantly have Scroll email you a “magic link” and then ensure you open it in the right browser, it means that you are getting your paid-for ad-free experience in the app of your choosing. Unlike Apple News (disclosure: another Vox Media partner), you aren’t forced into a not-especially-great app. You don’t get a link that seems like it goes to a web page but actually just goes to Apple’s app. You can also use it on any device you own, not just Apple’s products. Also unlike Apple News, this subscription isn’t really a subscription. For publications that put articles behind paywalls, Scroll won’t get you in. On the whole, though, I much prefer Scroll’s system to Apple News. It works better with the existing web and the existing apps we all use to navigate it. A subscription system that turns off ads, pays publishers, and doesn’t lock me into any particular app while also doing a pretty good job of keeping my login active? Seems good to me. Still, I’m not quite going to go quite so far as to endorse Scroll (and not just because Vox Media is a partner). Deciding to sign up is between you, your level of trust in Scroll’s privacy policies, your ad-blocking conscience, whether you care about the current list of partner publications, and the cost. Fifth: Scroll puts a white bar at the bottom of every webpage it’s active on, ostensibly so you have the benefit of getting share links and an audio reader mode. No thank you times a thousand, Scroll. However, one benefit of using web browsers instead of Apple News is that web browsers are relatively open platforms and so you can use them to alter the web pages you visit (at least on the desktop — on mobile things are still often locked down). So, for example, I have a little script that I cobbled together after a day of Googling that makes it easier for me to format the links in this newsletter by automatically changing the web page I store them on, Pinboard.in. My favorite method is an extension called Tampermonkey. I wrote a little script for it that hides Scroll’s annoying bar. Other than some preliminary settings, it’s literally one line. It should work in Chromium-based browsers. Here it is, offered with zero support and absolutely no guarantees that it’s any good at all. Bonus sixth revelation: Tampermonkey offers a Google Drive-based sync, and since Microsoft’s new Edge browser runs on Chromium, my script auto-synced from Chrome on a Mac to Edge on Windows and Just Worked. The Internet! Sometimes it’ll surprise you.

└ To contain disease outbreaks, health officials rely on people’s trust You’ve probably formed an opinion on how anti-vaxxers have affected public health (the right opinion is that it has been for the worse). But similarly online misinformation can rush to fill the void of faster-moving health crises. Nicole Wetsman looks at the intersection of health, internet censorship, and trust: If one crisis is handled poorly, there will likely be less trust during the next one. Great report here from Colin Lecher. According to court records viewed by The Verge, Amazon has faced more than 60 federal lawsuits over product liability in the past decade. 15 TO WATCH: DECADE IN REVIEW
RICK HORROW’S TOP SPORTS TECHNOLOGY & MEDIA ISSUES OF 2010-2019
with Tanner Simkins
It’s hard to believe, but we have reached the end of yet another decade. And in the business of sport, it’s been a busy one. Here are Rick Horrow’s top 15 sports technology and media trends and issues of the decade just ending. Stay tuned throughout December for most influential philanthropic/corporate social responsibility actions in sports, and an early look at the year and decade ahead.
High Definition (HD). The most essential element for the sports consumer? Watching the game. High definition pushed the envelope this decade so much that now anything non-HD seems archaic – just think about what those old “Wide World of Sports” clips look like. The first major sporting event broadcast nationwide in the U.S. in HD was Super Bowl XXXIV, broadcast by ABC on January 30, 2000. By the 2014–2015 television season, every network show producing new episodes had transitioned to high definition. And virtually all HD technology was developed by global sports league partners, with broadcasting live sporting events that delivered almost the same immediacy as being there a top line goal for developers. Over 90% of U.S. homes have an HD television, and nearly 30% have a 4K TV. 4K (UltraHD) is here and 8k coming, virtual reality is next, the envelope is still being pushed.
Second screen. It’s hard to imagine a world without tablets, phones, and the many other connected devices we carry around with us. But this too was an advent of the 2010s. Now, second screen technology is so prevalent that we are plugged into a screen in one way or another every single day. A study by Strategy Analytics shows for around 33 billion total devices on the planet by end of the decade, this is about 4.3 smart devices per person. In sports, especially among the younger next generation of fans, it’s almost unheard of to watch a live or televised sporting event without engaging in a simultaneous second screen experience – to share with friends or fellow fans on social media, check stats and scores from other games, and participate in fantasy sports.
Smart phones. Yes, Virginia, there are smart devices galore, but still the most core to our use is the mobile phone. iPhone and Samsung are the champions here, with Apple really being the pioneer. Sports properties have utilized apps to benefit their content, communications, data, and marketing efforts. Fans use their smart phones for all of those second screen tasks just listed, as well as to take pictures and videos at live events and watch parties. In and around sports venues, smart phones are now used to find parking, get in via mobile ticketing, and order and pay for food and drinks. What didn’t survive, however – dedicated mobile devices from sports brand partners. Remember the short-lived Mobile ESPN? It didn’t even make it to the 2010s, dying a premature death in 2006 after losing ESPN a reported $150 million.
Content. In media, content is king. Text, audio, video, and all their possible creative combinations powered the 2010s to call claim to everything from viral memes to over the top (OTT) programming. The 2010s saw an explosion of broadcast and digital sports content. NFL Red Zone, for example, debuted in 2009 via cable but soon found a much wider audience as a mobile streaming option. Disney acquired the media assets of FOX for $71.3 billion and then sold, by government mandate, the FOX RSNs to Sinclair for $10.6 billion. Bill Simmons went from being an on air personality at ESPN to editing the acclaimed online sports magazine Grantland to founding The Ringer, a sports and pop culture website and podcast network, in 2016 and still serves as its CEO. The 2010s saw Grantland go under but subscription-based The Athletic rise in its place – the site and app, which has poached many of the best sports writers in the biz from traditional newspapers and magazines, is expecting to reach one million subscribers by year end. Pro athletes, finally, are developing media empires of their own, with LeBron James’ Uninterrupted leading the way.
Cameras. Cameras being built into devices was seen as a value add to tech products, especially mobile devices. The more cool tech things a gizmo could do the better, so cameras started appearing everywhere. We’ve already touched on how sports fans use their cameras, but advancing HDTV technology and ubiquitous mobile cameras also pushed the commercial broadcast tech to also improve. Other advances like aerial drone photography and augmented reality came from the pressure to innovate. The aerial camera technology was first introduced to Super Bowl fans in 1984, but didn't become regularly used by the NFL until around 2001. Now, aerial cameras are almost standard fixtures in stadiums, covering everything from football to soccer to tennis. In the 2010s we began to take drones for granted, starting at outdoor sporting and concert events and spreading outward. And launched in 2016, the Drone Racing League is currently in its fourth season, featuring seven races worldwide and broadcast on Twitter, NBC, SkySports, and other global media partners.
Wearables. Sport and fitness wearables emerged in the last decade and are here to stay. The ability to measure both performance and biometrics data proved to be big business for serious athletes and weekend warriors alike. Wearables are not limited to on your person, they have been implemented in game equipment and apparel. Top wearable device companies include FitBit, founded in 2007, which now reports to have sold more than 100 million devices and have 28 million users (and is being eyed by Google at a cool $2.1 billion purchase price); Apple, which now leads the market after entering in 2015 with its first smartwatch; Samsung; and Chinese giant Xiaomi, introduced in 2010, which includes earphones and VR headsets among its wearable offerings. And speaking of headphones, pro athletes remain one of the marketing cornerstones of Beats by Dre, which now boasts a market share north of 64% in the U.S. for headphones priced higher than $100, largely thanks to its partnering with athletes, hip hop artists, and other celebrities to develop and market co-branded products.
Connectivity. WiFi, Bluetooth, mobile data plans, cloud services, the Internet of Things (IoT) and getting devices communicating with other devices has created opportunities limited only by creativity. When devices can interact and share information, the smarter decisions media and tech companies can make. From minor league ballparks to arenas, soccer-specific stadiums, and the almost completed $4.93 billion SoFi Stadium and entertainment complex in Los Angeles, the “Connected Facility” over the last decade has become the absolute standard in sports stadia, empowering teams and vendors every bit as much as fans. At SoFi (named by a tech company, of course), according to CNBC, “Technology that will make the stadium experience unique includes a 70,000-sq-ft Oculus display board that will have 4K double-sided video; 5G communications network; Wi-Fi 6, the next generation of wireless to deliver faster speeds, and digital ticketing provided by Ticketmaster.
Social media. Social media has changed the world. While we all are understandably focused on the impact that social media has on global politics these days, outside of politics, there is nowhere that social media has made more of an impact than in sports and entertainment. Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram remain the big three here (RIP MySpace, Friendster, Vine, and Google Plus), but with dozens of other players, social media and social media marketing specifically has given a voice to sport – everyone from players to fans. Witness the rise of social media influencers inside and outside of sports, who can command seven-figure paydays from brands eager to reach their followers. Pro athletes are only as good as their Instagram Stories – just ask Cristiano Ronaldo (158.91 million followers); Neymar (112.71 million); David Beckham (54.89 million); LeBron James (47.91 million); and Gareth Bale (38.95 million). And it’s no coincidence that one of the main arguments for NCAA amateur athletes’ Name, Image, and Likeness ownership fight is the desire to capitalize on their own social media followings.
Esports. Esports events sell out arenas, it’s a Division 1 intercollegiate sport, professional leagues are continuing to grow, and there are countless other upward trajectories. The overall esports economy now tops $1 billion and 500 million viewers. All this for a sport (based largely on tech) that didn't exist prior to this decade. As we noted last week, by 2018, according to the Motley Fool, esports viewership grew 13.8% to 380 million people worldwide. And analysts expect this number to reach 557 million by 2021. U.S. pro sports leagues and team owners are investing in esports operations at all levels. At baseball’s Winter Meetings in San Diego, for example, the operators of the minor league Albuquerque Isotopes on Sunday floated the idea of holding nightly esports tournaments at Isotopes Park to introduce a whole new fan base to baseball. And just this week, Astralis becomes first esports firm to go public. The esports organization plans to raise between $18-22 million, with shares priced at $1.32.
Sports gaming. Whether it’s traditional gambling, fantasy sports, or a fusion of the two; media companies are covering it. The last decade brought us Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS), which paved the way for legalized sports betting as slowly, sports leagues realized that sports gaming enhanced their product rather than threatened it. Founded in 2011, American DFS contest and sports betting provider DraftKings allows users to enter daily and weekly fantasy sports–related contests and win money based on individual player and team performances in five major American sports (MLB, the NHL, the NFL, the NBA, and the PGA), Premier League and UEFA Champions League soccer, NASCAR, and more recently, MMA and tennis. DraftKings’ biggest competitor was FanDuel, founded in 2009, before the two agreed to merge in 2016. And over the last decade, the smooth proliferation of sports gaming and legal sports wagering also removed the Las Vegas taboo from American sports leagues – Vegas now has the NHL Stanley Cup-competing Golden Knights, and next year, the NFL Raiders.
Sport for cause, online. Brands and leagues should always be compelled to give back, but this past decade provided extra motivation. As a happy consequence to the decade’s proliferation of digital media, the demand for sports content stretched the box score and media companies began covering the social impact of sports. Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) became a buzzword for brands in the space as an overall sense that sports should give back increased. Olympic athletes successfully raised the money they need to compete via GoFundMe campaigns, and sports cause-related organizations such as LIVEStrong (which lives on despite founder Lance Armstrong’s downfall), the V Foundation for Cancer Research, and Oklahoma City-based Fields & Futures owe the vast majority of their reach to digital fundraising, marketing, and educational initiatives. Sport, finally, used the power of digital communication and texting functions to raise funds to help when disaster struck, from hurricane devastation in Puerto Rico to flooding in Houston and deadly fires in Northern California.
Media rights. This past decade was defined by mega deals in sports media rights. Whether it’s new networks, broadcast rights, digital rights, streaming rights, on demand, or over the top, the media rights deals now are now not uncommon to be in the billions. U.S. sports rights are estimated to be worth a total of $22.42 billion in 2019, about 44% of the total worldwide sports media market, according to SportBusiness Media. And a rising number of major sporting events available via streaming services is set to drive the revenue for global broadcast rights beyond $85 billion by the end of 2024, according to a recent Rethink TV report. The Sports Rights Forecast to 2025 paper shows the global value of sports rights currently at around $48.6 billion, though the report predicts an increase of 75% over the next five years due to a growth in audiences choosing direct-to-consumer (DTC) content.
Ticketing. Going to a sporting event is still core to the sports experience. In this past decade, the ticketing business saw tech related advances like dynamic pricing, paperless tickets, and digital second market sellers, all of which backed by data and CRM. As with so many things in our lives now, your mobile phone is now your sports ticket. At that Next Big Thing sports tech lab otherwise known as SoFi Stadium, CNBC notes the SafeTix digital ticketing provided by Ticketmaster “uses a rotating entry token that refreshes an encrypted barcode every 15 seconds to prevent counterfeiting and improve security. The digital ticket will also send customized messages to the ticketholder on a host of things — from VIP events to updates on parking information and merchandising offers.” And just last week, Swiss ticketing firm Viagogo agreed to buy StubHub for $4.05 billion, looking to leverage the brand globally.
Paywall. We saw the closing of many physical newspapers this decade, with the media companies behind them opting instead for digital content on their website. Different revenue models emerged like premium content paywalls for example. We’ve mentioned the success of The Athletic – and now venerable Sports Illustrated, under new millennial-focused ownership, is considering a paywall for its revamped short form content. DAZN, a London-based OTT subscription sports streaming service, first launched in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, and Japan in August 2016 and now has former ESPN chief John Skipper as its chairman as it is halfway to its magic number for an IPO. In the last few months alone we have seen the launch of ESPN+, Apple TV, and now Disney+, all subscription based Video on Demand streaming services. And YouTube, for years a free platform for literally billions of videos, is now making moves to segregate some of its sports and entertainment content behind a paywall.
Data analytics. Whether it is a team front office employing a cap room specialist, a coaching staff utilizing predictive analytics, an apparel company using purchase data to better understand consumer behavior, or the like, data analytics left its mark this past decade. What originated with sabermetrics and Bill James’ “Baseball Abstracts” that originated in 1977 by the 2010s had evolved to the point that most pro sports teams, in baseball and otherwise, have a full analytics staff working year round. And the tools have been simplified enough that they are now fully accessible to public school systems, volunteer youth sports coaches, and individual athletes looking to gauge and improve their own performances via stats, wearable tech, and other smart data-producing devices.

Mobile phones from various years A mobile or cell(ular) (tele)phone is a long-range, portable electronic device for personal telecommunications over long distances. Most current mobile phones connect to a cellular network of base stations (cell sites), which is in turn interconnected to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) (the exception are satellite phones). Cellular networks were first introduced in the early to mid 1980s (the 1G generation). Prior mobile phones operating without a cellular network (the so-called 0G generation), such as Mobile Telephone Service, date back to 1945. Until the mid to late 1980s, most mobile phones were sufficiently large that they were permanently installed in vehicles as car phones. With the advance of miniaturization, currently the vast majority of mobile phones are handheld. In addition to the standard voice function of a telephone, a mobile phone can support many additional services such as SMS for text messaging, email, packet switching for access to the Internet, and MMS for sending and receiving photos and video. The world's largest mobile phone manufacturers include Audiovox, BenQ-Siemens, High Tech Computer Corporation, Fujitsu, Kyocera, LG, Motorola, NEC, Nokia, Panasonic (Matsushita Electric), Pantech Curitel, Philips, Sagem, Samsung, Sanyo, Sharp, SK Teletech, Sony Ericsson, T&A Alcatel and Toshiba. The world's largest mobile phone operators include Orange SA, China Mobile and Vodafone. There are also specialist communication systems related to, but distinct from mobile phones, such as Professional Mobile Radio. Mobile phones are also distinct from cordless telephones, which generally operate only within a limited range of a specific base station. Technically, the term mobile phone includes such devices as satellite phones and pre-cellular mobile phones such as those operating via MTS which do not have a cellular network, whereas the related term cell(ular) phone does not. In practice, the two terms are used nearly interchangeably, with the preferred term varying by location. World mobile phone usage In most of Europe, wealthier parts of Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Latin America, Australia, Canada, and the United States, mobile phones are now widely used, with the majority of the adult, teenage, and even child population owning one. Taiwan had the highest mobile phone usage in 2005 at 111 subscribers per 100 people. Hong Kong has the highest mobile phone penetration rate in the world, at 127.4% in June 2006. The total number of mobile phone subscribers in the world was estimated at 2.14 billion in 2005. At present India and China have the largest growth rates of cellular subscribers in the world. The availability of Prepaid or pay as you go services, where the subscriber does not have to commit to a long term contract, has helped fuel this growth on a monumental scale. The mobile phone has become ubiquitous because of the interoperability of mobile phones across different networks and countries. This is due to the equipment manufacturers working to meet one of a few standards, particularly the GSM standard which was designed for Europe-wide interoperability. All European nations and most Asian and African nations adopted it as their sole standard. In other countries, such as the United States, Australia, Japan, and South Korea, legislation does not require any particular standard, and GSM coexists with other standards, such as CDMA and iDEN. Mobile phone culture or customs In fewer than twenty years, mobile phones have gone from being rare and expensive pieces of equipment used by businesses to a pervasive low-cost personal item. In many countries, mobile phones now outnumber land-line telephones, with most adults and many children now owning mobile phones [citation needed]. In the United States, 50% of children own mobile phones. It is not uncommon for young adults to simply own a mobile phone instead of a land-line for their residence [citation needed]. In some developing countries, where there is little existing fixed-line infrastructure, the mobile phone has become widespread. According to the CIA World Factbook the UK now has more mobile phones than people . With high levels of mobile telephone penetration, a mobile culture has evolved, where the phone becomes a key social tool, and people rely on their mobile phone address book to keep in touch with their friends. Many people keep in touch using SMS, and a whole culture of "texting" has developed from this. The commercial market in SMS's is growing. Many phones even offer Instant Messenger services to increase the simplicity and ease of texting on phones. Cellular phones in Japan, offering Internet capabilities such as NTT DoCoMo's i-mode, offer text messaging via standard e-mail. The mobile phone itself has also become a totemic and fashion object, with users decorating, customizing, and accessorizing their mobile phones to reflect their personality. This has emerged as its own industry. The sale of commercial ringtones exceeded $2.5 billion in 2004. The use of a mobile phone is prohibited in some rail carriages Mobile phone etiquette has become an important issue with mobiles ringing at funerals, weddings, movies, and plays. Users often speak at increased volume which has led to places like bookshops, libraries, movie theatres, doctor's offices, and houses of worship posting signs prohibiting the use of mobile phones, and in some places installing signal jamming equipment to prevent usage (although in many countries, e.g. the United States, such equipment is illegal). Transportation providers, particularly those doing long-distance services, often offer a "quiet car" where phone use is prohibited, much like the designated non-smoking cars in the past. Mobile phone use on aircraft is also prohibited, because of concerns of possible interference with aircraft radio communications. Most schools in the U.S prohibit cell phones due to the high amount of class disruptions due to their use, and due to the possibility of photographing someone (without consent). In Japan, cellular phone companies provide immediate notification of earthquakes and other natural disasters to their customers free of charge. In the event of an emergency, disaster response crews can locate trapped or injured people using the signals from their mobile phones; an interactive menu accessible through the phone's Internet browser notifies the company if the user is safe or in distress. Mobile phone features Main article: Mobile phone features Invented in 1997, the camera phone is now 85% of the market. Mobile phones also often have features beyond sending text messages and making voice calls—including Internet browsing, music (MP3) playback, personal organizers, e-mail, built-in cameras and camcorders, ringtones, games, radio, Push-to-Talk (PTT), infrared and Bluetooth connectivity, call registers, ability to watch streaming video or download video for later viewing, and serving as a wireless modem for a PC. In most countries, the person receiving a cellular phone call pays nothing. However, in China (including Hong Kong), Canada, and the United States, one can be charged per minute. Future prospects There is a great deal of active research and development into mobile phone technology that is currently underway. Some of the improvements that are being worked on are: Now that operators are upgrading their networks to advanced wireless and other third-generation (3G) services, many new entertainment and communications services are becoming available, including new broadcast-type operations on spectrum formerly occupied by Television Channels 52-69. With downlink speeds comparable to that of wireline DSL, mobile service can now offer capabilities such as streaming video sharing and music downloads. Services such as MobiTV, Digital Mobile TV or Juice Caster are just some examples of applications that leverage these new networks. One difficulty in adapting mobile phones to new uses is form factor. For example, ebook readers may well become a distinct device, because of conflicting form-factor requirements — ebook readers require large screens, while phones need to be smaller. However, this may be solved using folding e-paper or built-in projectors. One function that would be useful in phones is a translation function. Currently it is only available in stand-alone devices, such as Ectaco translators. An important area of evolution relates to the Man Machine Interface. New solutions are being developed to create new MMI more easily and let manufacturers and operators experiment new concepts. Examples of companies that are currently developing this technology are Digital Airways with the Kaleido product, e-sim, mobile arsenal, and Qualcomm with uiOne for the BREW environment. Mobile phones will include various speech technologies as they are being developed. Many phones already have rudimentary speech recognition in a form of voice dialing. However, to support more natural speech recognition and translation, a drastic improvement in the state of technology in these devices is required. New technologies are being explored that will utilize the Extended Internet and enable mobile phones to treat a barcode as a URL tag. Phones equipped with barcode reader-enabled cameras will be able to snap photos of barcodes and direct the user to corresponding sites on the Internet. This technology can be extended to RFID tags, or even snapped pictures of company logos. Searches can also be personalized to local areas using a GPS system built in to cell phones. Examples of companies that are currently developing this technology are Nextcode, OP3, Neomedia Technologies, and Scanbuy, the latter of which is currently being sued by Neomedia for patent infringement. Another approach (used by jumptag.com) is to map URLs to short text tags tailored for easy user entry on phone keypads. Developments in miniaturized hard disks and flash d

OZ vs. Real Life: How Our Society Has Become like 'Summer Wars'
Today marks the 10th anniversary of the release of the critically-acclaimed anime film Summer Wars. The 2009 feature won several awards and further solidified the reputation of director Mamoru Hosoda as an up-and-coming anime creator who previously directed The Girl Who Leapt Through Time and would go on to direct films such as Wolf Children, The Boy and the Beast, and the Oscar-nominated Mirai. To this day, Summer Wars represents a milestone in his illustrious career as a visually-stunning and emotional story about a family whose heart-wrenching drama is at the center of an internet crisis that threatens the world.
One of the more notable aspects of the film is the glamourous and fantastical world of OZ, a VR platform integrated into the very infrastructure of modern society. In the film, OZ functions as an entertainment hub but also allowed people to conduct businesses on every level. The plot even focused on how an evolving virus wreaking havoc on OZ had disastrous effects on the real world! For its time, it was certainly a far more advanced reality than anything we might have seen in real life.
But that was 10 years ago. Now in 2019, our lives have become far more virtual. Much of our daily routines rely on the internet or are otherwise made far more efficient by using the right app. It’s no stretch to say our society operates in the same way as the OZ-reliant world of Summer Wars. But how similar are they? Does real life imitate art? Is OZ still more advanced than our society, or have we taken steps in our computer-consolidated world that Hosoda hadn’t thought of? Let’s see how our modern world stacks up to OZ.
In order to properly examine how advanced our world has become compared to Summer Wars, we should dive into what OZ really does. At its core, it gathered a user’s entire life—from business to entertainment—in one overarching social network. It could be accessed from computers, televisions, flip phones, and even portable game consoles. Using highly-customizable avatars, users could explore a vast online world for both leisure and professional work. Users were able to buy anything from movies to fashion to food to real estate on OZ in its wide selection of online stores.
As a global network, OZ users could communicate in chat rooms with anyone in the world using real-time translations, removing language as a barrier for socializing. People could also participate in online sporting events from soccer to martial arts fighting and beyond.
Surprisingly, large corporations also had branches on OZ, where workers would “cyber-commute” to virtual cubicles and conduct business there. Even local governments around the world had a stake in OZ, opening up service kiosks for users to visit. Traffic managment and emergency services could be accessed through OZ, and you could even use it to pay your taxes. There was truly no limit to how connected the world could be to OZ’s vast online platform. Your entire life was collected on a singular network, and then expanded exponentially. From top to bottom, it functioned as a part of the entire world. As a whole entity, it was certainly much more innovative than anything in our reality at the time.
Speaking of which, let's take a look at where technology was during Summer Wars' initial release. The year is 2009. Flip phones were still in use throughout society, but smartphones were on a meteoric rise in popularity. The iPhone 3GS was the latest iPhone model on the market at the time, with the Samsung Galaxy making its debut on June 29 of that year, mere days before Summer Wars’ theatrical release on August 1.
At the same time, smartphone applications started sharing in the spotlight. CNN reported that the iTunes App Store alone saw over 2 billion downloads across various apps. Some of the most popular apps downloaded that year included document viewers, GPS navigation, games, messengers, radio stations, and more. Other smart devices would start catching up with the trend as well, with Android and Blackberry products launching their own app stores. Google, which launched its Play Store before Apple in 2008, only began supporting priced apps in 2009.
Social networking saw a similar growth in popularity. Facebook would go from its humble beginnings as a site for college students to reach users across all countries and demographics. By the end of 2009, the social networking site gained over 350 million users, with the average user spending an hour a day online. Twitter also became a platform for real-time news updates. People from all over the world contributed to the “micro-blogging” trend with tweets and concise updates on developing news stories almost exactly as they happened. Online messaging was also a developing craze. Apps like AIM and Skype allowed people to connect with each other with video calls and messages, but Facebook Chat was slowly becoming more popular as a means of communication.
Already, we can draw some interesting parallels in the comparison between Summer Wars and real life. By and large, the cast of Summer Wars were often using flip phones, reflecting Japan’s overall reliance on said devices that persists well into recent years. While something could certainly said about the processing capabilities of flip phones being able to run something as advanced as OZ, instances of smartphone usage were few and far between, with only a handful of tech-savvy characters using them. By then in our world, smartphones were already the new standard of devices essential to your daily life.
As for news and entertainment, users could receive vast amounts of televised news updates on the dot. As soon as a news broadcast began or you wanted to check out a movie, it could be fed right into your OZ interface.
Of course, OZ had its share of fantastical achievements for its time. Millions of OZ’s chatrooms allowed users to converse with several people across different languages. Real time translations almost instantly converted a user's speech and text to other people’s native languages. As an open platform, OZ users could also jump right onto other people’s chatrooms seamlessly to talk with other people. Barring any region-specific message apps or language preferences on your computer, nothing in 2009 could come close to matching the translation efficiency that OZ offered.
For instance, real-time translations on mobile devices was first developed and utilized in Japan in 1999 and featured direct speech translation. Between 2004 and 2006, it was released and implemented for SMS, emails, and instant messaging. Though even then, it would just support conversations between two people in two different languages.
You certainly couldn’t have live conversations with a native Japanese speaker, a native Hindi speaker, a native French speaker, a native Tagalog speaker, and a native English speaker as fluidly as you could on OZ. Technically, OZ chatrooms eschewed the need for translating apps and features in the first place, allowing people to speak freely in their own languages with virtually no lag time. At the time, nothing could connect people on the internet quite like the global phenomenon of OZ. It was the lifeline of Summer Wars’ society. Even world leaders conducted their business on the networking platform. For better or worse, society was largely reliant on OZ to function.
Now, let's fast-forward 10 years, where we begin to see just how much of of our online lives reflects that of OZ. Today’s social media and technological capabilities have become so hard-wired into our everyday lives that our devices are identical to an entire livelihood fitting in the palm of your hand. Flip phones are practically extinct as smartphones became the new standard. Apps have evolved from cute, mindless add-ons that kill time on a commute to essential lifelines that streamline many of our daily responsibilities into a few screen swipes each. Our connectivity is broader than ever with several messaging apps and programs that allow us to communicate with anyone in the world with a semi-decent internet connection. And yes, even our governments and businesses are unabashedly reliant on their smart devices and internet in order to function.
But of course, we need to bring it back to Summer Wars. How much did the movie get right? Have we exceeded Hosoda’s expectations for society? Is OZ still more advanced than our world? Let’s break it down.
As previously mentioned, OZ was a one-stop shop for literally any of your needs. From news to fashion to running a nuclear reactor, there wasn’t much you couldn’t do on OZ. Many of the apps and sites we use now include various functions that do indeed match up with Summer Wars' infamous social network.
Facebook, for one, is possibly the closest example we have to a true-to-life OZ. Aside from keeping in touch with friends, the main page alone allows you to create and visit fundraisers, buy and sell anything from phones to houses in a marketplace, conduct job searches, and even send letters government officials and representatives on various issues. You can even keep track of news updates, emergencies, and ongoing crises around the world depending on who you’re following. Through the Messenger app, people can even request and send money to their friends at their leisure. Many of Facebook’s current functions are well within OZ’s capabilities.
Of course, Facebook can’t do everything OZ can. It certainly doesn’t have a customizable avatar that you can decorate with the hottest fashion, nor can you pay your taxes on it. Not many people exclusively use Facebook for work either (one might argue that it’s still used for the exact opposite). And in terms of 1:1 translations across several different languages, you’re better off downloading different keyboard layouts for your typing purposes. Instead, we have individual apps and sites that serve several different functions from news updates to financial transactions, and most of them can be accessed from our smartphones alone.
For tax-paying purposes, you have plenty of options. PC Magazine keeps an annual list of their preferred apps for keeping up with your bills such as TurboTax and H&R Block. They even boast that the H&R Block app works just as well as its browser version.
Plenty of today’s new and upcoming games have character creators that let you play expressively. Though you certainly can’t explore the entire internet with them or outfit them in the latest Gucci styles, games like the upcoming Code Vein feature several options from which you can choose your appearance. People can also use platforms like VR Chat with custom avatars to interact with online users.
There are also plenty of apps and sites that, instead of using them explicitly for your job, help you organize your business ventures better. Trello and Slack are common sites for employees to keep their assignments organized and stay in touch conveniently. Dropbox is a cloud service that allows you to upload and store your important documents securely. There are even plenty of note-taking apps that you can download or are even pre-loaded in your phone to begin with that can help keep your work thoughts in check.
Translation apps have come a long way since the early days of Google Translate, though even that has seen some considerable upgrades. Apps like iTranslate Voice 3 allow you to speak into your phone and translate your phrases automatically into your language of choice. Other apps like TextGrabber can even help you read signs and menus in foreign languages by taking pictures of the text. There are also plenty of successful and ongoing Kickstarter projects for sleek and portable translation devices that strive to help us get closer to real-time translated conversations between several different languages at once. Even if it’s not common practice yet, the idea has started to take shape in recent years.
The same can be said about anything that OZ came up with back in 2009. In many ways, we’ve gotten closer and closer to the vision that Hosoda had for an internet-reliant society. Though we certainly don’t have nuclear codes or hospital health monitoring available on a whim, our current internet capabilities allow us to streamline both our professional and social lives in many different ways.
OZ in and of itself was integrated into every facet of society, making it essential to a fault to making sure the world still goes round. In reality, a decent internet connection grants you the same kind of accessibility to just about anything you might need. In the 10 years since Summer Wars’ release, our society has become nearly identical that of Kenji Koiso and the Jinnouchi clan's. It’ll certainly be interesting to see how we as a network civilization will advance in another 10 years! As of now, all we can say is that Summer Wars certainly wasn’t far off in predicting where we’d be now.
Do you think our society is anything like Summer Wars? What OZ innovation would you like to see in real life? Leave a comment and let us know!

Should You Delete Your Facebook Account? Responses from Our Community
Cambridge Analytica, a data and analytics firm focused on political communication, has been accused of harvesting data from millions of Facebook profiles that was then used to specifically target and influence people on social media during the 2016 Presidential election.
While Facebook’s founder, Mark Zuckerberg, responded saying "This was a breach of trust, and I'm sorry we didn't do more at the time. We're now taking steps to ensure this doesn't happen again." many feel this wasn’t enough.
As a result, searches for “delete my Facebook” came rolling in and the #deleteFacebook hashtag was trending within hours. As users began to delete their accounts it became known that Facebook has been collecting more data than many originally thought including call history and SMS data from Android devices.
As the manager of a vibrant Facebook community of thousands of inbound professionals I couldn’t help but wonder what our community was thinking. Then I thought, why limit it to our community?
I quickly created a survey and shared it throughout IMPACT, my social networks and encouraged others to share as well. The results span a variety of age groups, roles and viewpoints.
A Breakdown of Our Surveyed Audience
We surveyed a variety of people ages 22 to 65. About 50% of the respondents were between the ages of 22 and 29.
Among this group were many marketers and salespeople as well as a variety of other professions including titles such as law clerk, public relations executive, pharmacy technician, paralegal, health counselor, music teacher, singer-songwriter, and more.
Responses from Those Who Are Considering Deleting Their Facebook Accounts
Of the people we surveyed, 21% said they were in fact considering deleting their Facebook accounts. While not all the answers were related specifically to this threat to personal data privacy, some were focused on that.
An inbound marketer who preferred to remain anonymous responded saying “A company that large and with that much user information has an obligation to be THE model of social responsibility. But, more importantly, they should WANT to protect their users and it blows my mind when they don't. Just to clarify: I hold Google, Apple, Verizon, AT&T, Samsung, Comcast, etc. all to this same standard.”
Three members of the IMPACT team also said they were considering deleting their accounts. While one was considering it more because of the negative effects Facebook has on his life in general, the other two said they don’t have confidence in or trust Facebook and related applications to keep their information secure.
IMPACT Elite member John McTigue said: “I'm concerned that my data may be used in ways that I don't approve of or authorize. I also feel that FB has violated privacy policies and/or made them so obscure that they mislead users.”
Finally, an anonymous marketing consultant responded: “Facebook has had a lot of PR blunders recently, this one being the most significant. My usage on the site has decreased over the years which has contributed to negative feelings about the site. Frankly, the pros of using the site are no longer outweighing the cons.”
Responses from People Who Are Keeping Their Facebook Accounts
Of the remaining nearly 80% of respondents who do not plan to delete their Facebook accounts, majority shared similar feelings including being responsible for their own data privacy and finding a lot of value in Facebook, both personally and professionally.
IMPACT Elite member Kaitlyn Casso said: “Not only will all of my memories disappear but I have found a new love for Facebook groups this past year. Between this awesome group and even groups that hit my personal interests like hiking and traveling. I've found them to be so useful when looking for quick advice rather than spending hours doing personal research. And it connects you with like-minded people!”
IMPACT Elite member Paul Wolfer said: “I feel like my life would improve if I deleted my Facebook account, but I've really grown my side business a lot with it (and Instagram), so as much as I have issues with it, I feel kind of stuck.”
Many also said they do make an effort to put as little personal data on Facebook as possible and that they know their data is spread around regardless. Whether it’s by Google, Facebook, Amazon - they understand it’s a risk associated with using these platforms and services.
Jason Rose, a marketing strategist at IMPACT, weighed in saying: “I also try not to let the newsfeed algorithm dictate my media consumption habits. Facebook only has as much power as you give it. I do believe Facebook to have a net negative effect on our society as a whole, so it takes some mental gymnastics to stay on it. I think of Facebook like I think of the diner you all hang out at in high school. The food sucks but you are there because everyone else is.”
Many said they use it to connect with friends and share photos and until there is something better than Facebook, they’ll likely stick with what works.
Maggie Kamm, a mother and law clerk, responded: “It's how I keep my long distance family and friends in the loop about my life. Most of them are not on twitter. My school also posts a lot of updates and news on Facebook pages rather than via email.”
A graphic designer shared: "I've had my Facebook account since right before I started college in 2005. It has chronicled my entire adult life. There is simply too much information, too many people I connect with on a regular basis and too many news sources for me to stray away from."
Furthermore, there were quite a few responses noting how important Facebook is to many businesses. Responses included sentiments such as:
“It's such a big part of my business...it's just not an option.”
Myrna Arroyo, a marketing consultant, said “I’ve always advised my clients to make every effort to convert their followers on social media into leads by asking for emails, getting them subscribed to a blog, etc.... your website and email and phone list are yours. That way if Facebook were to shut down one day you’d still be able to reach your prospects.”
Deleting Your Facebook Probably Isn’t the Answer
As many have already noted, deleting your Facebook won’t fix our privacy nightmare. Whether we're willing to admit it or not, we're likely being tracked by everything in our digital lives. From search engines to cell phones, your information is being logged, stored and tracked in a multitude of ways. However, most would agree that does not make it acceptable for that information to be abused or used illegally.
A public relations executive responded: “My data is everywhere. I shop at Target = Hacked. I had a Yahoo email = Hacked. I used Equifax to monitor my SSN after my identity was stolen = Hacked 2.0. And any sane person will admit they know Russia hacked the last presidential election, so our own votes aren't even safe. I downloaded 50+ apps to my phone, which all have varying amount of data about my life. We live in a world where ethics will take a backseat to the right number ($$) in capitalism. Take a deep breath, take a fake Buzzfeed quiz about which Golden Girl you are and move on. Facebook is here to stay. There is no platform out there like it to replace it.”
A marketing manager responded: "It doesn't seem that big of a deal to me that they used data to target political ads. Politics is a business and businesses advertise to get money. [...] It definitely seems fishy and unethical to try to influence votes, but it sounds like it is just targeted Facebook ads and content. I personally take everything I see on Facebook with a big grain of salt - I don't believe everything I see on Facebook, so just because I see a political ad doesn't mean I will immediately believe it."
While getting completely rid of online search, cell phones, credit cards, and all e-commerce engagement is probably unrealistic for most people, you can take better control of your privacy online.
Taking Control of Your Privacy Online
While learning how to stop third-party apps from accessing your Facebook data does not fully solve the problem, it’s a good first step.
Annette Sugden weighed in with a couple of powerful thoughts: “I turned off the option to use facebook to log onto apps and websites and permissions for any 3rd party app to have access to my profile. Also even before the Cambridge Analytica revelation, I stopped participating in anything that could be mined for identity and other nefarious data collection purposes like those memes where you comment with what your Star Wars or other pop culture name would be based on private information like your full name and/or birthdate.
It’s too bad though that unethical people and criminals ruined games with facebook friends and fun quizzes to escape stress temporarily. Also now consumers trust Facebook and marketers even less. Data could be even more of a dirty word.
But we need data to help businesses and consumers find each other by serving up information and content that’s more relevant to their interests and needs. I’m not a marketer to manipulate others, but to help others. It makes me really angry what some people have done, including Cambridge Analytica.”
Carina Duffy, a marketing strategist at IMPACT, said: “While I think what happened is super messed up and not okay, people are manipulated in more ways than just on social networks, and in my opinion manipulative people and organizations are going to find ways to manipulate these people whether or not they're on Facebook.”
While having a way to respond to your customers' questions in real time is important - there are many ways to accomplish this. I know I find a lot of value in Facebook (especially in our community) but I also accept that it won't be around forever. I do my best to pay close attention to my privacy settings and I try not to log into external sites using Facebook just because it's a little faster.
What are your thoughts? Will you be updating your privacy settings and deleting third party app permissions? Are you considering deleting your Facebook account entirely? Let us know in the comments or join us in IMPACT Elite to continue the discussion.

iOS 11 Rumored to Feature New ‘Automator’ App
Apple can be working on an emblem-new, Siri-more advantageous automation app, with a purpose to be deeply-included into the approaching releases of iOS 11 and MacOS 10.13, in step with a brand new rumor that surfaced but became suddenly deleted from Reddit this morning.
The rumor comes courtesy of consumer cyan that, who simply days ago leaked a flurry of iOS 11’s maximum incredibly-predicted capabilities, if you want to reportedly include assist for FaceTime group calling, iPhone to iPhone FaceTime Audio calling by way of default, and what clan that claimed might be a wise AI-based Low Energy Mode for iOS eleven devices — designed to learn from one’s utilization patterns over time which will determine how best to hold their battery life.
Even in spite of the perceived sketchiness of the rumor’s posting and subsequent elimination, it’s handiest make sense that Apple pursues its personal automation app for iPhone and Mac. Returned in March we suggested that the corporation had acquired the uber-famous iOS automation app, Workflow. And whilst the intentions for doing so had been now not found out on the time of the acquisition, it changed into broadly speculated that Apple would take the effective Workflow platform, beautify and refine it with its very own magical contact, and then in some way put in force it into upcoming important software program releases for iPhone and Mac.
And so, if this rumor turns out to be proper, it might appear that’s precisely what Apple is doing here. in line with cyan that, Apple is stated to be operating on a re-predicted Automator app, with the intention to operate seamlessly across iOS eleven and MacOS 10.thirteen devices, correctly changing the currently present Automator app for Mac, at the same time as bundling interesting new features into the Workflow platform.
“The app could be based on Workflow, which Apple these days received. Automator can have deeper OS/iCloud integration with advanced Siri aid,” cyan that wrote, while adding “Automator may be unveiled at WWDC and deliver with iOS eleven and MacOS 10.thirteen [this fall].”
Interestingly, cyan that went directly to allege that Apple’s reengineered Automator app will now not only replace the present Automator app hooked up through default on Mac, but Automator on iOS eleven will also replace the enterprise’s proprietary Home app too, which was released along iOS 10 final 12 months.
Given the nature of this rumor, it’s understandably hard to decide its validity — and so we can simply wait until Apple’s Worldwide Developers Convention (WWDC) kicks off subsequent month to find out for certain. At WWDC, Apple’s new Automator app will supposedly be unveiled alongside brand-new software program titles, throughout the board, and probably a slew of recent hardware, inclusive of next-generation iPads and a standalone, Siri-enabled Echo competitor that Apple has been “setting the finishing touches on.
Using an Autoresponder or Reply Email Automator – (Which is Best for Me?)
Autoresponders have made our existence a lot simpler as site owners and enterprise owners, they reply to emails for us sent to a specific electronic mail address to get or give a selected response, like sending customers to a download page, a thank you for subscribing to our e-newsletter page or a series of preloaded emails for an eCourse we’ve got developed.
If like me, you have got ever tried to shop time and setup an autoresponder to answer your clients daily questions, you, no doubt discovered it clumsy and tough to perform. Do not forget a couple of e-mail address for your touch web page, and then you definitely were the handiest guessing as to the questions that they’ll ask.
Then we setup FAQ pages to attempt to cool the frequent questions, but we still did not restore all the questions that were being asked. Not to mention a potential patron sending an actual query to the e-mail that they concept turned into proper but lamentably it turned into incorrect, and the solution they were given was just now not anticipated or failed to make feel. Imagine how they felt? Do you think they became a purchaser? I doubt it.
As commercial enterprise or internet site owners, we need a smooth to function system to permit us to reply the equal or comparable questions again and again to various customers and prospective clients. These queries may cover questions about value, freight, size, while they could expect a product shipping, or many different comparable, however, different questions all sent to the equal e-mail deal with or shape that we placed on our website to assist with customer service.
Now as we most effective have one e-mail address on our website online an autoresponder is out of the question, as they do not vary the solution to in shape. Believe a machine to permit you to organize your reply, so they may be smooth to find and able to be customized to in shape every client and will save you hours of time, each week.
Understanding Feature-Function-Benefit Presentation
Feature-function-benefit selling shows are effective due to the fact they work. For the purpose of brevity, I will refer to it as “FFB” in this text. A professional sales education application will encompass this crucial approach in some shape or some other. You can see it started by using a barely specific name, inclusive of Function-need-advantage or some other closely worded name but irrespective of the name, it’s miles the same technique.
Here is a simple manner to make FFB an essential a part of every income attempt and advantage from it. Permits begin via defining each of the phrases.
Characteristic
This is the “what’s it” part of FFB. every product or service has precise features that separate it from the opposition. If the Characteristic is common to other merchandise the way it is provided will help separate you out of your competitor.
feature
What does it do? In the course of your presentation, this a part of FFB offers your customer the possibility to see the way it works. It is going without saying that talented product information is a must.
gain
Why need to your patron have it? Here is wherein you remedy a problem, fill a want and reinforce why your services or products is the proper one.
Permit’s do an easy exercising that places FFB into motion.
Suppose you promote automobiles. In ultra-modern international, most of them have anti-lock brakes as either popular or optionally available gadget. Now, you are showing your customer the vehicle. You could both say:
“This automobile has anti-lock brakes” or You could use FFB for your benefit and say:
“This automobile is ready with anti-lock brakes.(The Feature) In the event of an emergency braking scenario, you absolutely depress the brake pedal to the floor. (The feature) The Anti-lock brake gadget is designed to bring you to a whole and instantly forestall without allowing the wheels to skid. This prevents loss of manage and avoids sliding off the dual carriageway or into oncoming site visitors. (The benefit)
Right here is wherein many salespeople forget about a critical step. Always give up your FFB presentation with a tie-down or proof announcement. Inside the above example it would sound like this:
“I assume you will agree that is a critical protection Feature.”
Think about the products or services you sell. As an exercise to emerge as at ease with FFB write down a few key capabilities and practice presenting them the usage of this method. It’s going to pay huge dividends.
