It's been 7 years since we posted something from Welsh label The Popty Ping Recording Company (previous posts were about Trecco Beis and Gintis). I loved early releases that sounded Welsh - that is, influenced by Gorky's Zygotic Mynci and/or Super Furry Animals.

Red Telephone released this 7" back in 2019, and they owe more to the post-punk stylings of These Immortal Souls than the aforementioned Welsh giants. Speaking of These Immortal Souls - what a supergroup. Made up of members from The Birthday Party and Swell Maps, they are getting the reissue treatment via Mute.

Back to The Popty Ping Recording Company. They haven't released much in their decade-plus of existence, but they continually chug along releasing great music. Recently, they released their first full length.

Although popularly known as the "red telephone", the Moscow–Washington hotline was never a telephone line, nor were red phones used. The first implementation of the hotline used teletype equipment, which was replaced by facsimile (fax) machines in 1988. Since 2008, the hotline has been a secure computer link over which the two countries exchange email.[320] Moreover, the hotline links the Kremlin to the Pentagon, not the White House.[321]

Red Telephone release brand new ‘Waiting For Your Good Days’ Single

Cardiff’s Post-punk outfit Red Telephone return with a fantastic new offering in the shape of a brand new single called ‘Waiting For Your Good Days’ 

With comparisons to Joy Division, Suede and Berlin-era Bowie the band’s debut album entitled ‘Hollowing Out’ is due for an anticipated release on 31st March, and it sounds like it’s gonna be a little bit special. 

With it’s darkly sounding lyrics and Declan’s staccato vocal style, ‘Waiting For Your Good Days’ is a huge sounding track with some fantastic production, the only single being lifted from debut album ‘Hollowing Out’, so makes the suspense of what the rest of the album has to offer that bit more mysterious.

Hailing from Cardiff, Red Telephone’s richly layered alt-rock could have emanated from a club in Blade Runner's dystopian LA - combining angular guitars, Krautrock inspired rhythms and New Wave-tinged synths with infectious pop sensibilities. 

Drawing on post punk and synth pop influences, the band has been catching the attention of DJs across BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 1, Absolute Radio and Radio X; with comparisons to the likes of MGMT, Super Furry Animals, Mitski and Berlin-era Bowie being drawn. 

The band have recently appeared at BBC 6 Music Fringe Festival, Focus Wales, Swn Festival, Other Voices and Llangollen Fringe, supporting Warmduscher. With previous single releases on Welsh-based labels Libertino Records and the Popty-Ping Recording Company, the band's highly anticipated debut album is set to be released in March 2023.
