"I had been chasing that man for eight years." That's interesting. My Jack Hellion post started a bit of a commentary on the show's inconsistency with time — which is true. But one thing they kept track of very well was the timeline of Jane's family's murder, which means I can say with absolute certainty that, when RJ was caught, it had been about ten years and a half of chasing.

Interesting that they lost track of that now.

WHEN PEOPLE TALK ABOUT HOW JANE CHOSE LIFE THAT HE LITERALLY DID!! WHEN HE KILLED RED JOHN, HE STARTED TO TURN THE GUN TOWARDS HIMSELF AND THEN STOPPED. HE CHOSE TO LIVE IN THAT VERY MOMENT!! HE CHOSE TO WALK AWAY AND CALL LISBON AND TELL HER IT'S DONE. BC AS MUCH AS JANE WANTED TO BE THE ONE TO KILL RED JOHN IT SEEMED PRETTY OBVIOUS THAT RED JOHN WANTED TO BE THE ONE TO KILL JANE AND HIM NOT DYING IS JUST BEATING RED JOHN EVEN MORE! I swear every time we cut to Jane in his house in Malibu I just wanna go “Jane, sweetie, IT IS NOT HEALTHY TO SLEEP UNDERNEATH THE SMILEY FACE DRAWN IN THE BLOOD OF YOUR WIFE AND DAUGHTER!!!!!!” Like Lisbon must’ve known he slept under that since in Fugue In Red she brought him there like I’m surprised she knows about it because Jane is so secretive and I don’t imagine he wants anyone knowing that he falls asleep looking at THAT!!!!

Happy 16th Anniversary to my favourite show! 16 years ago today, on the 23rd of September 2008, the Pilot episode aired. Pairing: Patrick Jane/Teresa Lisbon  Show: The Mentalist  Rating: Teen and Up Summary: 

She slowed her breathing and searched her mind for a recent memory. Anything at all that might give her some kind of clue. She remembered driving out to Salton Sea. She remembered a body in the desert, and a small diner off the highway. She remembered calling Grace, fighting with Jane, driving back to Sacramento alone. Awareness hit her like a bolt of lightning, and her eyes shot open. The brightness in the room sent a white hot stab of pain through her skull but Lisbon did not close her eyes again. She darted her gaze around and found herself not in her bedroom, but in a brightly lit hospital room with daylight spilling through the half-open blinds, sunbeams pouring over the foot of the bed. The beeping came from a monitor which she was strapped to, the pace of which had increased dramatically in the last ten seconds. She looked down to find herself dressed in a hospital gown and half covered in a scratchy blanket. The distress call. The dilapidated old house. Partridge. Red John. 

I have always wondered what might have happened if Red John had been less charitable when he kidnapped Lisbon in Desert Rose, so I wrote about it! You can read the fic here :)

so i’m watching the mentalist for the first time, (late to the party, i know,) and i’ve just finished the red john arc. honestly my one reservation with 6x08 is not the identity of red john, but that the final chase is backwards. they should have run to the chapel, not away from it - it would have made for a much stronger image

red john, who thinks of himself as a god, dying at the hands of a man who refuses to believe in god, on the steps of an alter. the alter in the chapel of the graveyard where the victims that created the man who defeated him are buried. there’d have been some poetry in that, i think, rather than some nameless lakeside

For funsies and since we never got any confirmation of his actual death, I choose to believe that Red John killed Jane's dad too, he just didn't care.

Okay but for real, the season finale for the first season is something else, just in terms of Jane’s actions. He gets all upset with Lisbon about their plan and being led to Red John and Jane has so little regard of his own life. Even when Maya is mentioned, he just. All he wants is Red John. If he can’t have a go at him, he needs Lisbon to get him, even if it means his own death.

This guy is practically allergic to guns most of the time. But the moment this guy makes a move - as obsessed with Red John as Jane is - Jane shoots him in defense of Lisbon. Like he doesn’t even think, he just picks the gun up and does it. And then his hand kinda shakes and he drops it immediately.

Say what you will about the first season of The Mentalist, it’s more episodic nature and Jane’s behavior etc., but the dude cared about Lisbon from the get-go more than he probably gets credit for. And I appreciate that.
