This is a short very fluffy and sweet piece I've had in my documents for awhile and when I spotted the holiday on the calendar I knew I had the perfect fic to post. I've love seeing Red and Kitty as grandparents in T9S, it's everything I wanted BUT I do wish we had gotten to see them with little Leia or maybe a younger grandkid but it's okay because that my friends is what fanfic is for! And it's what you'll find in this particular fanfic so if you're like me and wish we'd get glimpse of Red and Kitty with a little grandbaby, I thinkĀ and hopeĀ youā€™ll enjoy this fic!

35. ā€œYouā€™re so adorable.ā€ Red and Kitty please
Thanks for the ask! Prompt Ask Game
Kitty walked upstairs to find someone rummaging through her closet. It would have been alarming, if it wasn't her husband.
"Red Forman, just what are you doing?" she demanded, crossing her arms impatiently. He was going to mess up all of her clothing, her carefully organized system!
Red jumped with surprise, dropping all of the items in his arms. A pair of blue heels clattered to the floor, and Kitty arched an eyebrow.
"Are those my good heels? Red - "
"Kitty - wait." He righted himself and then sighed. "It's - it's Leia. She's... well, she-she..."
"Spit it out, Red," Kitty shook her head impatiently.
He sighed again. "She has a date, Kitty."
"A date?"
"At the castle." He looked up at her now, his eyes glimmering.
"The c-castle? Red..."
"She's Cinderella, Kitty," Red spread his hands out in front of them, painting the picture for her. "We read the story last night and, well, now she's playing - "
"Make believe," Kitty finished for him, understanding now, with her signature laugh.
He nodded eagerly. "She wanted a slipper. Just like Cinderella."
Kitty gave her husband an affectionate, bemused grin. "You're so adorable, Red Forman."
He grinned back, but then cleared his throat. "Does that, ah. Mean I can have the slipper?"
"Go," she pointed towards the door. "I'll make some finger sandwiches for you and the princess."
"You're the best, Kitty." Red pecked her on the cheek before he raced out of the room with the heels.
"No, you are."

T9S, Part 3, Episode 8 and Part 3 Overview
Commentary and spoilers:
Kitty picked up smoking again? Just ... the T7S fan in me is shouting objections.
But! Now that I've seen this episode, I can talk about it and Part 3 as a whole.
Again, I watch T9S with two mindsets: 1) as the T7S fan who recognizes how far, and in what ways, the T9S universe diverges from T7S canon and 2) the T9S fan that thinks about the internal cohesion of the T9S universe, regardless that the show's canon conflicts with the canon of the T7S universe.
The final episode of Part 3 explores the conflict between Donna's parenting and Kitty's grandparenting. In an interesting reversal, Donna is the (re)strict(ive) one who worries about Leia having similar teen years to her own while Kitty believes Leia should have more freedom (in part to spite Donna).
Hyde's absence is strongly felt by me here. He would be the one to give Donna perspective, that they all turned out fine -- not despite their teen years but because of what they learned from them. He'd remind Donna that Leia needs the freedom to make mistakes and screw up while trusting that she has supportive family (which includes Uncle/Godfather Hyde) that will keep Leia from disaster.
I'm happy that Nikki and Nate reconciled and why (in this particular episode; could have lived without that succubus who took Betsy's name). Nate has some Kelso seasoning on his character, but he's also got some of Hyde's (the self-sacrificing to make the girl he loves happy). Ultimately, though, he's become more his own character as the series went on.
The writers made what seems to be a conscious decision to dissuade Leia/Gwen shippers and wrote Part 2 and Part 3 with this goal in mind. In Part 2 episode 1, Jay sings Leia a song using Jay/Leia and Gwen/Leia's fandom ship names, saying, "It's Jeia, not Geia," or something similar to that effect. This screams purposeful intent by the writers.
Combined with the fact Leia and Gwen barely have any development, storylines, or scenes of their own in Parts 2 and 3 -- just enough so the audience doesn't forget they're best friends -- the T9S writers sent a clear message to the show's viewers. Compare Leia and Gwen's minimal interactions to Jay and Nate's significant interactions and storylines in Parts 2 and 3.
Both Jay and Nate deal with romantic relationships, but their friendship is never neglected. On the contrary, their friendship has a major arc and continues to develop. Leia and Gwen's friendship is barely seen and somewhat heard.
In fact, Gwen is paired with Nikki more often in scenes, and their friendship gets more development. Not unwelcome, but Leia's attachment to Point Place and newfound happiness began with Gwen in Part 1. The writers killed their chemistry in Parts 2 and 3 by keeping them separate. And when they do have scenes together, with rare exception, they're about other people -- like Gwen's almost-boyfriend / boyfriend.
Ozzie becomes an actual character in Parts 2 and 3, not just a snarky commentator. The connection established between him and Jay and Nate in Part 2 is carried through to Part 3. But by Ozzie's own admission to Nikki, he's a selfish person. I don't think he's selfish, though. I think he's still too separated from the other characters. His life isn't enmeshed with theirs. He has circles with them and goes to some of the same places, and he tells Leia to give Jay a break in Part 2 -- but he continues to be on the outer edge of the group.
Fez in T7S, for comparison, has a strong bond with Hyde from the start of the series and gets involved with Jackie and Kelso's lives during season 1. His friendships with Eric and Donna are less developed, but Fez is enmeshed with the group as a whole from the start and becomes more so as the show continues.
I enjoyed Red and Kitty's relationship and their storylines in Part 3. The relationship itself felt organic. That being said, Kitty's character in Part 3 was not written or depicted enough as Kitty. DJR does a great job with what she's given script-wise. Her comedic timing is on point, but I felt like I was watching a fanfic version of Kitty where the writer doesn't quite understand the character or views her through a bizarre lens.
Mitch depicted and treated as a buffoon was definitely satisfying. Instead of him bullying Fez and Kelso, manipulating Donna, and temporarily convincing Eric's girlfriend, friends, and parents how wonderful he is while effing with Eric (and as a way to eff with him to try to take his place with his loved ones), everyone important sees through him now. He was always pathetic, but he doesn't get away with it on T9S.
Earl's guest appearance and interaction with Red was also a treat
The way the show deals with Tanya Roberts's passing is touching and funny and, I think, a worthy tribute.
Overall, I experienced a drop in writing quality from Part 2 to Part 3, despite that they were produced at the same time. Other people might have a different experience than mine, of course.
I do hope the series gets renewed. I'm very curious to see how the characters' journeys continue. I'm glad we got more insight about Gwen and Nikki's families. I'm sure the cliffhanger at the end will be resolved relatively swiftly, although Leia and Jay's particular conflict will take longer to resolve.

As much as I'm enjoying the nostalgically fun ride that is That 90s Show, and all the new cast, I think I've missed Red and Kitty the most.
K: "Red, I know you wanted to teach her, but you are kind of an angry driver. Last week, you threw a cup of coffee at that funeral procession." R: "The roads are for the living!"
K: "This flight is only 8 hours, and home is for the rest of your life. And if you think death will save you, I will pump you so full of vitamins, you will live forever."
K: "Oh my goodness, you're afraid to fly!" Why didn't you say something before we got to the airport?" R: "I was hoping we'd get into a car accident on the way here. And god bless Sherri, she tried."
Bonus points:
A. To the revamping on the dynamic of all the roles the characters plays as twists and improvements on the dynamics of the original cast (that's a whole post I'm not writing right now).
B. How perfectly cast and written Leia is - she's so believably looks and acts like a child born and raised by Eric and Donna, I don't doubt it for a second.

I'm already nostalgic for the time when T9S was first announced. Ugh, it was bizarre, nobody expected it at all. The mystery of it all was so much fun, I miss that. I miss the speculation of why Leia was visiting her Red and Kitty for the summer. I even miss people freaking out over the name Leia. It was fun speculating on who was going play Leia Forman. I miss all that. Yeah, it's great that show came out. But god, I miss the unknown.

NEW That '70s Show/That '90s Show Fanfiction
Title: It's a Heartache
Summary: Kitty and Red try to help Leia through her teenage heartbreak. Pure family fluff because Red and Kitty as grandparents warms my heart.
Pairings: Red/Kitty, Red and Leia (Family) Kitty and Leia (Family) mentions of Jay/Leia
Rating: K+
Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/47878771
Author's Note: A short oneshot that focuses on Red and Kitty with teenage Leia and helping her feel better in the ways that they know how. Short and fluffy and not much mentions of other characters but the three so I'm hoping even those that don't care too much for T9S will give these pieces a chance. Thanks in advance!

Red and Kitty fluff and them as grandparents?? Oh my heart!!šŸ’› I absolutely ADORE THIS!!
prompt number 34 ā€œStop denying it! You need sleepā€ could you make a drabble of this prompt about grandma kitty and grandpa red? maybe them helping donna and eric with baby leia?
love your drabbles!! šŸ„°šŸ„°
Thank you, anon, and thanks for the ask! Hope you enjoy Gma Kitty and Gpa Red. Prompt Ask Game
Red pulled his car down the familiar street, and parked underneath a streetlamp. His eyes were peeled for the Toyota, and sure enough - there it was, parked just across from him. He rolled his eyes as he stepped from the car and made his way towards the building.
The front door to Eric and Donna's unit was unlocked, as it always was, despite his repeated advice to keep it locked. He pushed it open easily, mumbling, "What if I was a predator? Dumbass," under his breath.
The lights in the apartment were off except for a dimly lit lamp in the corner of the living room. Red moved past it, to the nursery. Sure enough, his wife sat in the gliding rocker, their five week old granddaughter fussing against her chest.
"Hush little baby, don't say a word," Kitty's singing voice was muted, murmuring, but still beautiful. "Grandma's gonna buy you a mockingbird."
Red leaned against the doorframe for a moment, hesitant to interrupt her.
"And if that mockingbird..." she wavered, like she'd forgotten the words to the next verse.
"Don't sing," Red cleared his voice and chimed in, his voice low and a bit uncertain. "Grandpa's gonna buy you a golden ring."
"Red." She turned around, and smiled at him like she'd won a million in the lottery.
He, however, had some concerns to raise.
"Kitty you're still watching Leia?" He frowned and glanced at his watch. "It's almost 10 o'clock."
"Donna has a night class," Kitty explained, around a yawn. "And Eric picked up a double shift tonight."
"So what time will they be - "
"Any minute now," she waved him off, unbothered. "Red, it's fine."
"Kitty, it's not fine."
"It's fine," she insisted, nodding to Leia, who had settled and was now dozing against her. "I'm spending quality time with my granddaughter."
He could see how happy she was - it shone from every feature. But his concern for her remained.
"You've spent every night here this week."
"Well, Leia needed me," Kitty cooed.
"Kitty, stop denying it!" Red rose his voice, just a little. "You're doing too much. You need sleep!"
Kitty looked surprised at his outburst, but then after a moment she looked sheepish.
"I suppose I - " she hesitated. "I am feeling a little tired." She gave her signature giggle, as if to prelude her vulnerability. "I was getting nervous about driving home on the freeway," she admitted to him.
Red nodded. "I'll drive you," he said, comfortingly. "We can come back for the Toyota tomorrow morning."
"Oh, Red," she sighed. A long glance between them said everything.
After a moment, he clapped his hands together. "Now, hand over the baby," he instructed, reaching for Leia. "Why don't you go lay down until Donna gets home, hmm?" He grinned at the warm little pink bundle still nodding off in his wife's arms. "It's Grandpa-time, now."

After writing a frustrated/defensive Kitty, I have some thoughts...
In T9S, considering Kitty calling Leia a "lying little bitch," it's not the frustration/defensiveness itself that is massively OOC. In T7S, she wasn't a consistent ray of sunshine. She was notably wary of/seemed to dislike Laurie (but tried to bite her tongue and push Laurie in the right direction), and once stated to Donna that although she loved her family, she sometimes got frustrated with them and wanted to run them all over.
Instead, it's how said frustration and defensiveness are expressed in T9S that is massively OOC. She's not that crass or vindictive when it comes to her children (or, in theory, towards her grandchildren), and would never call her daughter or granddaughter a bitch. A liar, or perhaps a "liar, liar pants on fire?" Absolutely. Kitty can be the bad cop (and an occasional punchline giver) without contorting her as a character.
PS:
1. If Donna ever found out that Kitty called her daughter a bitch...watch out. Eric is a momma's boy, but he wouldn't be pleased, to say the least.
2. Kitty calling Eric a dumbass (after not taking Donna back in season 4) is the worst she ever got, and dumbass/ass is the furthest she'd ever go in regards to her children/grandchildren. Bitch, especially "lying little bitch," has a way more vindictive and crass connotation, imo.
