The Record Project
My first vinyl record was a gift I received from my sister as a birthday present, and "Lifted or the Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground" by Bright Eyes remains, still, one of my favorite records in my collection that now numbers over 150. Though 150 is not a truly big number in the world of record collecting, the stacks of cardboard and vinyl has quickly taken over my room, the Lavender Room, and private life.
My roommate, Dylan Bliss, and with the help of some of my best friends, most namely Jordan Minnick, chronologically lined up my records from oldest to newest. That fist line up was the first Record Project. It consisted of around 75 records and ranged from Glen Miller to the latest Tennis album. The journey through the many genres and the different decades brought a much wider perspective on how I view music and my life as a whole. With that being said, with the end of the first project I, and everyone else listening, had an empty feeling and the desire for more.
We quickly found more people interested in the project to include some of their own records in the new line up. I manged to acquire a new mass to my collection which includes greats like Johnny Cash Live at Folsom Prison. Jordan brought her fathers old collection back from her home in Montana. That 86 record collection boasts fantastic records such as Pink Floyd's "The Wall", a great selection of Beatles, and Styx. A few more were added by my old friend Ben Petersen and my new Lincoln buddy Alex Schumacher.
So I am pleased to say our new project includes over 200 records once again ranging from big band and swing to Led Zepplin and even the maniac styling of Sufjan Stevens' "Age of Adz". My goal is to continue this blog and document the project as it goes, and express different perspectives we have on the current state of the line up. We will be tweeting as we go on what record is currently playing along with a pic of the album cover.
Our first record in the line up is Bunny Berigan and his Orchestra with "The Great Dance Bands of the '30's and '40's". The Story is in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground.
