Still not sure if I'm going to make a temperature blanket, but I have made a whole spreadsheet with the potential layout for one so that I can fill in the squares every day and color-code it appropriately just in case I decide to. If nothing else, I'll have a temperature spreadsheet lol

Idk if it's surprising whatsoever, but I'm one of those people who lowkey enjoys making spreadsheets so

My plan for the blanket, should I make one, is to do two rows per month. Each day gets a 2x2" square for the high temp and one for the low temp (as it says in the bottom right). I really want to do like the high temp squares have a sun in the middle and the low temp have a moon (using granny square patterns from BJRcreative on Etsy but with a smaller hook size). That might be too much effort though so I might just make them solid squares. Then a black border on the whole thing.

I think I know what yarn I want to use, just need to pick out the specific colors. Not sure they'll even match my current chart tbh, depends on if i can find a shade of each color that all look good together. If not I'll swap some

To be totally honest I don't really need another blanket, so I might make a different temperature thing if I can come up with something. I've seen a temperature snake before so maybe something like that would be fun, idk. Anyway!

lestat somehow ends up having beef with taylor swift because she released the 15th version of her new album the same day the vampire lestat album came out and made it go number two on the charts. his fans are mad and they say she’s not a ‘girl’s girl’ because they think lestat is secretly using she/her pronouns. this causes MAD discourse on twitter because people say lestans (official name of his fandom) are co-opting struggles of real trans/genderqueer artists and that lestat is clearly just a cis white man who thinks his aesthetic is cool and hip with the times but he’s actually super cringe. lestat has killed his pr team so he tweets himself in response to the drama and says that mademoiselle swiftié is a perfectly fine musician but she’s basically a baby compared to his long relationship with music. swifties ratio him on twitter calling him ‘an old queen’ and ‘world’s worst father’ (this is because they read international bestseller interview with the vampire). lestat has an emotional breakdown and cries for three days and he eats his makeup artist for making him look old. his producers are desperate and they ask daniel molloy to fix him because daniel is the unofficial vampire therapist now. vampire daniel’s idea of fixing lestat is to go on a blood bender with him. somehow this works because in between victims daniel tells lestat to stop being a little bitch and grow the fuck up. here lestat understands for the first time why daniel and louis are friends and asks daniel to telepathically call louis for him because he needs him. daniel tells him to eat shit. as they return to lestat’s shack (yes he still lives there when he’s not touring) they find out that swifties have doxxed him and showed up to the shack to ravage it. lestat starts crying again while daniel falls over himself laughing and records everything and posts it on tiktok. armand likes the video 0.3 seconds after it’s posted. throughout all of this louis is on a beach somewhere enjoying a quiet night, he telepathically asks daniel how lestat’s doing and daniel tells him to not even worry about it.

The Conjuring House was no joke, that was a fact that Y/n knew well. After going to the Conjuring House on three separate occasions with Sam and Colby and being witness to some crazy things, she didn’t need any convincing of that.

This time was one to top the charts. Ever since Sam and Colby heard about Satori and Cody, they knew that they wanted to meet them and get their expertise on camera. So Y/n decided to go with them. However, one thing happened about a week before the flight that may have changed the trajectory of the trip.

Y/n missed her period.

She took a test and met with her gynecologist, and they both came to the same conclusion. She was pregnant. She was not super far along, a little over a month, but she was not sure if she should go on the trip. After talking it over with her gynecologist, they decided she should be fine as long as she stepped away when it got too much and did not put herself in dangerous situations. She knew that if she had told Colby that they were expecting, he would abort the whole video, and she knew she did not want to be responsible for that

So they arrived at the Conjuring House. Sam and Colby in the front and Kat and Y/n in the back. Satori and Cody said they would meet them there, so they did not worry about getting a bigger car.

“Are you guys ready for this?” Sam asked enthusiastically as he pulled into the driveway.

“Are you ready to get another attachment?” Kat snapped back jokingly, causing Sam’s jaw to drop and the rest of the car to laugh.

“No need to come for my brother like that,” Colby defended, turning back to point a finger at Kat.

“You should definitely put this at the end of the video,” Y/n added, directing everyone’s attention to the camera that was recording.

“Anyway, what’s up guys! It’s Sam and Colby,” Colby started the intro.

“Today, well, this week, we are at the Conjuring House with Kat and Y/n!” Sam continued.

“These guys get 10 million subscribers, and we get dragged into this,” Y/n laughed gesturing to Kat as they climbed out of the car, so Sam and Colby could do their intro in peace. The two walked into the house and greeted Satori and Cody. The four made small talk until Sam and Colby came into the house.

“I see you made yourself comfortable without us,” Colby teased as he sat next to Y/n on the couch and laid his arm over her shoulder. “Do we know how we're going about tonight?”

“I think we’re just letting Satori and Cody do their thing and we’ll go with the flow,” Y/n explained as she leaned into Colby’s side. “What do you guys think? It is your video.”

“I think that’s fine,” Sam said, setting up the cameras. Kat started pulling out different gadgets and placing them around the room.

“We’re ready to start whenever you guys are,” Satori offered, moving to stand up with Cody. Colby stood up as well before he turned back and held his hand out jokingly for Y/n to stand up.

“Well, thank you, kind sir,” Y/n joked in a mock posh accent.

“You’re welcome, governess,” Colby joked back, causing the two to chuckle before turning serious again. “Ok, back to the task at hand-”

Hours later, Satori and Cody were still getting so much in response. It was nearing midnight at this point, and they were still nonstop. After the third hour, Y/n got a huge headache, and it did not prove to be a problem until the knocks started getting louder.

“Hey, I’m gonna go get some fresh air. My head hurts,” Y/n announced as she stood up and walked out the door, not waiting for a response. Kat immediately said she would follow Y/n and trailed behind her as they walked through the snow carefully toward the car.

���Are you okay? You’re really pale,” Kat asked as they leaned against the hood of the rental car.

“I have a huge headache, and honestly, I need to tell someone,” Y/n admitted and let out a sigh before saying, “I’m pregnant.”

“You’re kidding!” Kat exclaimed excitedly, reaching out to hold Y/n’s hands. “You’re serious? Oh my god, I’m so happy for you guys! Does Colby know?”

“If I told him, he wouldn’t have let me come,” Y/n laughed as Kat pulled her into a hug. “I’m so glad I finally told someone. I’ve been keeping that to myself for the last week.”

“You’re kidding!” Kat exclaimed again. She was too excited because when she jumped away from the car, she pulled Y/n with her and they both lost their footing. “Woah!”

“Ouch! Kat!" Y/n laughed as she landed on her back in the snow with Kat leaning over her. They were laughing like maniacs despite knowing that one or both of them could have been seriously injured. “What the hell? You’re crazy, get off me.”

Meanwhile, in the living room, Satori and Cody kept at it with Sam and Colby, teaching them along the way. The first person they connected with asked about Colby, so Satori and Cody took back over. 

“Way to go, Colby,” Sam jokingly scolded. 

“Shut up, Sam,” Colby joked back.

“You want to talk to Colby?” Satori asked as was met with a knock immediately. “Okay, what is your name?” She went through the alphabet and found the name they were spelling out. “Frank? Yes. Colby, do you know a Frank?”

“Not off the top of my head,” Colby answered, “Who are you to me?” Satori started the alphabet again and the knocks spelled out:

“Grandfather? No, Great-grandfather? Yes,” Satori interpreted. “What message do you have for Colby?” The knocks started back up and what it spelled caused a chill to run down everyone’s spines. “Protect? Protect who?...Y/n. Protect Y/n from what?”

They did not get an answer as they heard shouting from outside, causing Colby to bolt out the door immediately.

“Y/n?” He shouted, not caring that it was midnight. His ears were ringing, and his heart stopped when he saw Y/n laying in the snow. He could not breathe, and he could not register that the girls were laughing and not in danger. He slid down to be down by Y/n’s head as he held her hand. “Holy shit, are you okay? Do we need to go to the hospital?”

“All good, Colby,” she laughed, pushing Kat off her as she stood up. Y/n inspected the snow around her as she felt around her stomach,  “I don’t see any blood and I don’t feel any pain, so I think we’re both good.”

“Yeah, you and Kat look fine to me,” Colby sighed as he took Y/n into his arms.

“No, not Kat, no offense,” Y/n retorted before looking up at Colby as she wrapped her arms around his neck. She whispered, “Me and the baby.”

“Baby? Whose baby? My baby? Our baby?” He asked so quickly Y/n could not keep up with him as he held her at arm’s length before cheering loudly when she nodded her head. He ran back to the house to tell Sam only to find Sam, Satori, and Cody standing at the doorway. “I’m gonna be a dad!”

“Yeah, Frank just told us.”

for those interested, on this fitzcovery day:

a dear friend asked me to explain why i felt completely insane about the phrase "genetic distance of one" and, as usual, i got overexcited and wrote an entire thing about it complete with goofy images! it's on twt HERE, but i figured it would also be nice to pop it up here also. SO. with the caveat that it has been many years since my last bio class and this is VERY OVERSIMPLIFIED. here's

Human DNA is grouped into chromosomes. We generally have TWO of each chromosome: 22 pairs (numbered 1-22), plus one pair of sex chromosome (typically either two X-chromosomes (XX), or one X-chromosome and one Y-chromosome (XY)). That's 23 pairs, or 46 chromosomes, in total.

When producing sex cells, matching chromosome pairs will RECOMBINE (swap bits of information) - eg. one Chromosome 4 will remix itself with the other Chromosome 4, making TWO UNIQUE C4s. When the cell splits into two sex cells, each sex cell will carry ONE unique C4.

That's sexual reproduction! Every new offspring is genetically unique - new combinations of traits pop up quickly, and if they improve reproductive fitness, can be passed on to future offspring. This allows for rapid adaptation and changes in a species over time.

But what about Y-chromosomes, which don’t have pairs? They can't recombine in the way paired chromosomes can - which means Y-chromosomes pretty much only change via mutation (errors in copying DNA). Mutation is VERY slow, especially compared to recombination.

This means that when an XY parent passes down their Y-chromosome to a child, chances are high that chromosome will have few, if any, changes – as opposed to X-chromosomes, which recombine in both XX parents and children, shuffling genetic information all over the place.

Due to this slow rate of change, Y-chromosomes can be more easily tracked through the generations than other human chromosomes. A Y-chromosome might be passed down nearly unchanged for hundreds of years from genetic father to genetic son.

GENETIC DISTANCE refers to the measurement of difference between two sets of DNA. The lower the genetic distance, the more closely related the two samples are likely to be. A genetic distance of 1 means the samples are close to identical.

Because we know how slowly Y-chromosomes change over time, we know that if the Y-chromosomes of two people have a low genetic distance, this implies that those people are paternally related – even if the two people live/lived hundreds of years apart.

In the case of Captain James Fitzjames, genetic data was extracted from a set of unidentified remains (a molar from a disarticulated mandible). 17 genetic markers from the molar’s Y-chromosome were compared to the Y-chromosome of a confirmed paternal relative of the Captain.

Those 17 markers were the same in both samples, giving the two Y-chromosomes a genetic distance of one – meaning, with the genetic information available, the living relative and the unidentified decedent are more than 2000 TIMES more likely to be paternally related than not.

EDIT: DOIP I MISREAD THE CHART 16 of 17 match, not all 17!!

Along with all the information we have from the historical record, the context of the remains, and this new comparative genetic analysis, we can safely conclude that this particular set of remains belong to Captain Fitzjames.

160 years isn't long in the grand scheme. Every identified set of remains is another reminder that these were people, not just a distant curiosity. It's humbling to remember not just that we have identified Cpt. Fitzjames, but that still, today, we have a genetic distance of one.

Mariana just became the 10th most followed streamer on Twitch with 9.34 million followers, just surpassing Pokimane, and I wanted to share some highlights from the article Stream Charts wrote up on him & on the Spanish-speaking Twitch community!

At the end of 2023, Streams Charts named ElMariana the fourth-most-watched Latin American streamer of 2023, having recorded 28.89M Hours Watched for the entire year. Not only is the creator highly watched, but his community is also one of the most active on Twitch. Earlier this month, we scoured Twitch chats across the platform to determine which streamers had the most active chats on the platform. ElMariana ranked within the top 5 channels by Active Chatters and was the only Spanish-speaking streamer to rank so highly by this metric.

I'll also note that Stream Charts does not include Brazil in their Latin American stats; they do separate stats for Brazil (Cellbit took 7th place if you're curious).

It’s too bright in the hospital room Jihoon is currently waiting in. The fluorescent light bulbs only seem to reflect the sterile white environment back in his eyes, causing him to squint slightly. He drew the blinds a long time ago, trying to avoid exactly this discomfort. He isn’t used to this. He’s used to the soft blue and violet ambiance of his studio and the LED of his computer. An IV drips steadily next to him with a tube connected in his arm. His phone died a while ago, and no one seems to have a spare charger in the hospital. He’s chosen to combat his boredom (and loneliness) by closing his eyes, breathing steadily. He knows he won’t sleep. He can’t. He has too much to think about and work to get back to. Forever the workaholic, his mind immediately starts making a list of what to catch up on once he can get out of here and back to his sanctuary. 

A small click and very light footsteps approach his side. He doesn’t mind them; it’s probably just that old nurse coming back to check on him again or lecture him about staying hydrated and getting at least nine hours of sleep because eight is actually too little and that lie was spread by blah blah blah. There’s quiet sounds of a pen on paper then a rattling of equipment and a squeak. Jihoon cracks one eye open at that new sound like a mouse had suddenly appeared to record his vitals. Not a mouse. A nurse. One wincing as he makes eye contact with her, his face emotionless.

“Sorry,” you whisper, “I didn’t want to disturb your nap.”

“I wasn’t sleeping,” he replies in a sigh. He opens both eyes and blinks away some of the discomfort of the environment. The first color he sees other than hospital white is pastel pink. And pastel flowers on hairpins. You smile down at him brightly.

“Oh! Okay! Well, you are doing much better. Shouldn’t be long until you can get out of here.” Your smile is warm and your voice is cheerful. 

“Thank you, Nurse…” he trails off, waiting for an introduction.

“Y/N! Just call me Y/N.” You can’t help but notice this patient as he lightly smiles for the first time since you’ve been here. It’s only been something like two minutes, but still. It’s a soft smile that crinkles his eyes into crescents. He’s very cute.

“Why couldn’t you have been my nurse the whole time? The other one kept nagging me.” Jihoon pouts a little as he talks. He’s really very cute. 

You hold the clipboard you were writing on close to your chest and relax your stance a little to talk, “Her shift ended. I’m her replacement.” It’s, for once, not super busy this afternoon, so you have some time before someone is breathing down your neck about checking on patients. There’s something about this guy that makes you want to pause and talk. Maybe even unload. His gentle eyes are tired; it’s like he has been carrying a heavy burden on his shoulders and this is his first genuine excuse to let up a little. His voice is soft in his chest, and there’s something adding timber, something somber.

“Good, you are much easier to talk to. My phone died a long time ago, so I’m bored,” Jihoon says, letting out a deep breath he didn’t realize he had been holding. 

You glance at his chart again. He’s been put on fluids and vitamins for dehydration and poor nutrition. This guy is overworked, stressed, and isn’t sleeping much. He’s literally on record saying “I only eat white rice, really” and he doesn’t drink much water. You begin to see why the last nurse wanted to lecture him so bad. 

“You should rest. Get some extra sleep while you're still here.” You gently goad him in the right direction.

Jihoon groans indignantly, “I really don’t want to. Besides, it’s uncomfortable here: too bright with the lights on, too dark with them off. I’d much rather talk to you.” He’s being a little whiny, even for his own taste, but any excuse to not waste more time while he’s still conscious. He has work to do. Well, maybe not to do right now, but he can still think about it.

You give him a half smile and set the clipboard on one of the chairs near the bed. “Sit up,” you command and he obliges without hesitation. You move in close to fluff his pillow and then gently, and without thinking, push down on his chest to get him to lay all the way back. You bring the thin blanket up to his chest, and for the final touch, you move the bottom corner of the blanket for it to expose one leg. Jihoon’s heart has been racing since you stepped forward to fluff his pillow and you clock it on the heart monitor immediately. 

“Is that better?” There’s a chuckle in your voice.

Jihoon nods kind of mystified, just staring at you with big eyes. You grab the discarded clipboard and move to the door to shut off the lights. It is really dark in this room. “I’ll be back,” you announce and speed off into the hallway.

Jihoon is staring at the ceiling while his mind reels at the interaction. Nurse Y/N, he thinks, What a force of nature. He finds himself missing the pop of color your scrubs brought to the otherwise bleak room. When he does reluctantly close his eyes, all he can picture is your smile. The silence is killing him, and, almost on queue, the door swings open once more; this time it’s a lot less subtle. 

You walk in with an assortment of items. A small noise machine, a night light, and an extra blanket. You carefully set up each item to make the room feel a hell of a lot cozier. Jihoon is once again at a loss for words. The oppressive sterility of the space transforms before his eyes. Once the night light is plugged in, there is a softer, warmer glow about the room. When you turn around, you are backlit in a golden light.

“Do you need a lullaby for your nap, as well, Mr. Lee?” you tease your patient smiling.

“Please, just Jihoon is fine. And no, this is… perfect.” Jihoon cracks a genuine smile, feeling all his stress slowly begin to melt away. “Where did you find a nightlight?”

“Pediatrics. The noise machine is from the On-Call room. You’re lucky no one is using it right now.” 

“I really am lucky, huh?” Jihoon says more to himself than he does to you. 

“Okay then, just Jihoon. Sweet dreams,” you say, flustered. 

They sure will be, he thinks. You watch as he settles into the bed and actually plans to rest. You slip out of the door with a prideful feeling in your chest. You’re good at your job.

When Jihoon wakes up, his first instinct is to reach for his phone and check the time. It’s around 2:30 in the afternoon. He’s been in the hospital for a little over an hour. He blinks heavy a few times then looks at his phone again in surprise. It’s charged! It’s attached to a charger, and it’s fully charged! He follows the rainbow colored cord with his eyes to the outlet it’s plugged into, and sharpied onto the brick are the words “Y/N’s Do Not Touch!!”. There’s a water bottle on the nightstand and a red jello cup. He sits up and take the jello cup in one hand and his phone in the other, checking his messages.

When you ease the door open with a light knock, you find him watching a video on his phone while his tongue tries to scoop the last bit of jello out of the cup. You giggle a little which catches his attention causing him to swiftly put the now empty cup down.

“That nap was good, huh?” you say, still giggling lightly and flicking the lightswitch. You walk up to check his vitals and IV for the last time.

“Yeah, actually, thank you… for everything.” Jihoon sounds less stressed out. He’s much calmer and even a little happier. 

“It’s no biggie, honestly,” you reply. There’s a beat of silence and you sigh before starting your next sentence. “I’m going to do that thing that you hate.” You gesture to his arm, and he presents it, letting you tend to the removal of his IV. Your touch is soft and leaves him wanting more. He wants to fall into your gentle and nurturing arms and stay there forever.

“Jihoon, this incident was serious. When you fainted, you could’ve ended up with a concussion or worse. You’re lucky, but… this all could’ve been avoided.” You choose all your words carefully and talk gently. “You have to take care of yourself.” you finish up and dispose of the waste. Then, you chance to place a hand on his knee and add with a smile, “I won’t always be there to do it for you.”

Jihoon, who has been looking down while you speak, looks up into your eyes with a look of resignation on his face and a slight smirk. “You don’t, like, make house calls or anything, do you?”

You laugh and lightly hit his knee you were once holding, “Of course not! But, if you have any questions,” you produce a slip of paper from your pocket, “shoot me a text or something.”

Jihoon takes the piece of paper and sees a phone number written inside. He breaks into a genuine smile as he runs his fingers over the numbers to make sure he’s not still dreaming. He speaks up before you leave for good, “I might have a lot of questions. Can I ask them over coffee? Tomorrow, maybe?”

You raise your eyebrows, “You sure you're not too busy?”

“I’m sure. I’m gonna take my health a lot more seriously now. Starting with having a date with the cute nurse.”

You blush, but before you can come up with a cute response, your pager sounds. You manage to say through a smile, “Get out of here! Your discharge paperwork is at the desk,” before speed walking out of the door to attend to the next patient.

Jihoon takes a beat, smiling to himself before gathering his things to leave the hospital. He is serious about staying healthy and conscious for his job and fans and to impress a certain nurse with his ability to improve by himself. Though, having you around to bring him back to life sometimes is certainly a plus.

Tenacious D - Tribute 2002

"Tribute" is a song by American comedy rock duo Tenacious D, and the second single from their self-titled debut album (2001). The song is a tribute to what Kyle Gass and Jack Black refer to as "The Greatest Song in the World" (often confused as the song's title). Upon its release, "Tribute" failed to make a commercial impact in the US, but it became a hit in Australia and New Zealand, peaking at number four on the Australian Singles Chart and number nine on the New Zealand Singles Chart. Snape's Search History - Part Three

In which a SNCC meeting takes place.

If one was to look at Harry Potter, Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger sitting at a round desk in the middle of the common room on Monday evening, one would have thought that they were undoubtedly in the middle of a conspiracy. They were speaking in hushed voices, their eyes darted from one companion to the other, and sometimes, Hermione’s hand would move up and down the small piece of parchment she had placed in front of her. 

However, since Ron had at least two older brothers who spent their whole lives doing just that and since they were all Gryffindors - which meant all of them had conspired in one way or another at some point in the past -  eyes passed over this image without taking any notice of it.

However, the meeting was disturbed when an additional counterpart meandered up to the desk, slid out a chair, then sat down rather clumsily. Namely: Neville Longbottom. 

“Hullo,” this Longbottom said.

Hermione’s hands danced over the parchment nonchalantly and concealed any words that had been previously placed before she replied.

“Hello, Neville.”

Neville looked at them for a few moments, then made a shrugging motion and sighed.

“Just thought I’d ask, since I thought it’s quite a good… and erm, noble idea of yours…” He dared meet their eyes, then blurted it out on one breath. “D’you mind if I join you?”

Harry and Ron exchanged glances. Hermione’s eyebrows shot up.

“Join us?” she repeated, then added, “As in, to sit down?” “Well, yes,” Neville said, probably wondering whether he should back out while he still had the chance. “And no. I just thought… you know…”

“Ah,” Harry said, nodding. “You mean the secret that I told you about this morning.”

Hermione looked at him, slightly agonised, then back at Neville, who looked relieved and was nodding eagerly, then sighed.

“Yes, of course,” she said, then revealed the parchment. “I don’t see why not. But this has to be completely secret.”

Ron snorted and glanced at Harry. “We’re doing a great job of keeping it so far.”

“I reckon we are.” Harry shrugged. “Snape looked like he had no idea what was going on, this morning, didn’t he?”

“It was very fun. I don’t think he was expecting it one bit.” Neville beamed, then adjusted himself on the chair and scooted closer up to the table with it. “So, do you have a name for this?”

Hermione opened her mouth, then frowned. Ron spoke. 

“A name?”

“Yes, for this.” Neville tapped Hermione’s parchment. “It’s like a group, or a society. It should have a name.”

Ron laughed, grinning, then shared a look with Harry. 

“Of course we do,” he said. “It’s called the SNCC.”

Hermione turned to him. “The SNCC?”

“What's SNCC?” Harry asked.

“The Super-Nice-Conspiracy-Club,” Ron said after a short pause, making everyone correctly think that he had just made it up on the spot, then shrugged and nodded. “Yeah, why not.”

Hermione narrowed her eyes. 

“I think you mean the Snape’s-Newfound-Contentment-Committee, Ron.”

Ron nodded vigorously and pointed at her. “Precisely what I meant. Write that down, Hermione. It sounds pretty cool.”

Harry and Neville nodded, watching Hermione’s quill move up and down as she started to mutter, quite pleased with herself.

“We ought to make this official,” she was saying, placing dots on the parchment, “I mean, as official as it can get. A meeting once a week… oh, stop moaning Ron, it would only take ten minutes… and I’ll be the secretary. I’ll record these meetings and after a few months, we’ll review what we have achieved.”

“You’re going to be making charts about, what, Snape’s happiness levels?” Harry said - Ron laughed - and furrowed his brows. “Seems quite vague.”

“Or his depression levels if it goes as it currently is,” added Ron.

“True. But how are you going to do that, Hermione?”

“I’ll manage,” Hermione hummed, then placed down her quill and looked at them expectantly. “Since this is our first official meeting, we have very little progress to report and I don’t think we have many ideas, and thus should think of more.”

“Yep,” Neville said. “Perhaps we should make a mindmap.”

“Good idea, except there wouldn’t be much to put on it at the moment,” Harry replied, putting his head on his folded arms.

There was silence as everyone sank into thought.

“This is hard,” Ron sighed after a short moment. “If this was Hagrid, it would be easier. He loves all sorts of tea and biscuits and us coming to visit him, but, well, we don’t really know Snape well enough to come up with anything.”

“I bet the Slytherins do,” Neville muttered, which made Hermione look up at him. 

“Yes, they probably do,” she said, looking thoughtful. “But we’re not on good enough terms with any of them to ask without looking suspicious.”

“And downright bloody weird,” Ron scoffed, shaking his head. “No, better not. Let’s think.”

“Yes, Ron, do some of that for a change,” Hermione murmured, but then they all propped their heads up and frowned.

A few moments passed. A few sparks were set off by the Weasley twins as part of a prank, causing disturbance, but after joining in with the laughter as Lee Jordan tried to put Percy’s robes out of fire, Ron rapped the table, leaned in towards them and spoke.

“What about the house elves?”

“The what?” said Hermione and Harry.

“House elves,” Neville said. “They cook and clean and stuff. We’ve got one. And they’re never seen unless you summon them or seek them out. But what about them?”

“I dunno,” Ron said. “I just thought they could send stuff up or bring stuff down if we asked them.”

There were another few thoughtful nods, then Hermione put her head to the side and went a little pink.

“I think I’ve got an idea…” she began, glancing hesitantly at Ron. “... but, I don’t know…”

“What?” Harry asked.

Hermione pushed her lips out, smoothed her parchment out, then explained.

“If they cook and clean, that means they would be in the kitchens.”

“Yep.”

“And that means they can make drinks. So, I thought, what if they put his favourite drink on his desk in the morning? As in, you know, after breakfast?”

Ron opened his mouth, then thought for a moment and closed it.

“Yeah,” he said, opening it again. “That’s not too bad of an idea. And since they know what disappears on the breakfast table, they’ll know what he chooses to drink most often.”

“Brilliant.” Neville nodded. “That’s a start.”

They watched Hermione writing down the idea, then sank into thought again. This time, Hermione spoke.

“This is definitely for the future,” she said. “But once we… er, finally make friends with him-”

“I really doubt that will ever happen,” Ron interrupted.

“... we could find out what interests him and talk to him about it.”

“Well, he teaches Potions, doesn’t he?” Harry asked.

“Yes, but he must have other interests. One’s hobby doesn’t simply restrict to one’s job. In fact, that’s hardly ever the case.”

“Well, Snape is quite clever,” Neville murmured. “I bet he likes to read.”

“That’s a thought!” Hermione said, then bent down to write. “And it works out, because I like to read too!”

“But we don’t really do much of that,” Ron observed.

“Unless forced,” added Harry, “or if the book is good… D’you reckon he likes Quidditch?”

“He doesn’t look as though he does.”

“Or any other sport for that matter. No, he’s more of an intellectual man… And we’re on opposite teams,” Hermione said. “No, that can only cause conflict. At the moment, anyway.”

“Right,” Ron said. “But I think this is enough to begin with,” he said, peering at what Hermione had written down. We only made the first move today. If we do much more, he’ll get suspicious. And we shouldn’t be so obviously nice, next time.”

“Yes,” Harry nodded. “It was very fun to watch, but he’ll start to think we’re up to something.”

“Oh! I had a thought last night, but I forgot to mention it,” Hermione said. “To make it seem as though it’s simply a change in circumstance, as opposed to aimed at Snape: we should be just as proper in every other lesson too. I bet the teachers talk in the staff rooms. If Snape hears others talking about how suddenly all of us have matured and understood the importance of rules, and are taking homework seriously-”

“I am not doing double homework for Transfiguration,” Ron declared. “Or any other subject for that matter. Potion’s enough.”

“Alright, you don’t have to do much extra homework,” Hermione relented, obviously thinking that the poor boy wouldn’t be able to manage such a feat. “Just as long as you do it to the best standard.”

“Alright, alright,” Ron rolled his eyes. “You’re starting to sound like a teacher.”

“Anything else?” said Harry, smiling as they argued. “Or is that all?”

“I don’t think there’s anyone else we should be nice to.”

Hermione snorted and looked at them gleefully. “We could be nice to Draco Malfoy.”

All three boys made varying noises of indignance and laughter. Neville smirked. Harry and Ron snorted.

“Yeah,” Ron said. “What a great idea. I know, why don’t we just throw an exclusive Slytherin party while we’re at it?”

“That would definitely be sucking up,” Harry said, making gagging motions. “No, let's just keep to teachers.”

“Yeah,” said Ron. “That’s almost too much anyway.”

“But think about it this way,” Harry said as Hermione rolled up the parchment. “You’d make your mum proud if she found out how responsible you are being, Ronniekins- ow!”

Hermione and Neville got up to go to the library, leaving the squabbling duo behind and Harry massaging his head where Ron had bonked him. And it was only when they climbed through the portrait hole did Hermione lower her voice and say:

“You know, Neville… About those drinks these house-elves are supposed to bring up?”

“Yeah?”

“Why don’t we ask them to write a positive quote with each one?”

Neville wasn’t quite Harry or Ron, and in his mind the dark Potions Master could do with some more positivity, so he nodded enthusiastically as their steps matched.

“Yeah, why not?” he said. “It cannot possibly do any harm.”

So I'm seeing some folks are interested in my nurse Karnak AU! I've been filling in on a lot of day shifts lately so I haven't had as much time to sit down and draw but here are some ideas I've had because yes I do intend to write this, I feel it would be too fun to pass up:

Penny is in really bad shape. Ricky, now very much attached to her, wants to see her but knows he's likely to get shooed away if seen entering her room. Mischa causes a big scene to create a distraction so Ricky can visit with Penny because Mischa is a total bro (Ricky resolves he'll just be super super careful)

I've been asked what the deal with Virgil is and quite honestly I'm not sure I'm imaginative enough to think of some role for him here that isn't pure unadulterated nonsense. However my experience as a nurse is that many of us can't stand our companies' charting software so like what if "Virgil" is the name of the hospital's documentation system. Noel hears Karnak mutter "you're killing me, Virgil" under his breath when his computer crashes yet again, goes completely apeshit and tells all the others. This incident is then recorded in the "this nurse is the robot genie looking guy from purgatory" evidence files

Karnak is giving me seasoned RN vibes like he freaking runs this place

Though exact homophones are much punnier in speech, Internet jokes rely heavily upon text input and most people use phonetic-based Chinese input systems, meaning their autocompletes will often suggest near homophones and people will use them if they're funny enough.

To make this slightly statistically sound and not just me making up random puns, I grabbed 700k viewer comments from the years NiF was available on Youku, 2015 to 2020 (courtesy of danmu box). These danmu/弹幕 comments are timed to a particular moment in the show so they splash across the screen while you watch.

Let's start with the heavy hitters:

Xie Yu/谢玉 is an exact homophone of xièyù/泄欲, literally discharging desire, which means satisfying one’s lust or orgasming. Xie Yu's name occurs 5000+ times in the comments versus almost 900 orgasms.

Prince Yu/誉王 is an exact homophone of yùwáng/欲王, meaning prince of lust, and a near homophone, of yùwàng/欲望, which means desire (or the chaotic evil penis). The latter is far more likely to be autocompleted and shows up 1500+ times versus 200+ for the prince of lust.

Yùjīn/豫津 is a near homophone of yùjìn, 欲禁, or forbidden lust/abstinence. Because bath towel/浴巾 is an exact homophone and again far more likely to come up first in autocomplete, people overwhelmingly refer to him as the towel. In the comments, bath towel is used nearly 7000 times, 10x more frequently than his actual name, which is made up of two not-super-common characters.

Mei Changsu is often addressed as Su-xiong/苏兄 by Jingrui and Yujin in canon, which is an exact homophone of sūxiōng/酥胸, a literary term for supple and beautiful breasts that might have the same old-fashioned connotation as heaving bosom does in English. I'm going to call him gorgeous tits because he does bear a striking resemblance to the azure tit:

I've seen Chinese MCS fans note this resemblance before, but these birds don't have titillating names in Chinese so you can have this bonus joke for English speakers. Anyways, gorgeous tits are invoked in nearly 6000 comments versus almost 1200 for Su-xiong itself.

And the following off-color joke retold many times throughout the episodes:

Why is Mei Changsu called Su-xiong and not Mei-xiong? Because he has gorgeous tits, not tiny ones (Méi-xiōng/梅兄 is an exact homophone of flat-chested/没胸).

Here are some rarer-but-still-good puns:

Gōng Yǔ/宫羽 is a near homophone of gòngyù/共浴, bathing together (cue viewer comments about how she and bath towel belong with each other).

Níhuáng/霓凰 is a near homophone of nǐhuáng/你黄, slang meaning you’re perverted.

The emperor lives in Yǎngjū Hall/养居殿, a near homophone of penis hall since yángjù/阳具 is the yang implement, though it's most popularly punned with pigpen (I wrote about this here if you scroll to the end).

The travelogue Mei Changsu wrote annotations in, 翔地记, is an exact homophone of xiángdìjì/降帝记, or records of subduing the emperor (which I can only interpret as MCS’s Dom Diaries on how to conquer Jingyan).

Thank you! The short of it is: it's work but it works and she knows. Got into the weeds of it under the cut.

Yasmin couldn't bring herself to execute her duty as a Cleric of Kelemvor and former Necrobane and execute her (now undead) husband. In one fell swoop, Roisia ruined her mother's otherwise stellar track record as a Kelemvorite.

Logistically, if Yasmin wanted her husband to have freedom of movement, she could no longer offer room and board to the servants and staff in her employ. She allowed rumours that her business was suffering financially go unchallenged, since an undead husband in a funeral home is even worse for business. Generally speaking, Roisia's father, Jairus, keeps to the upstairs (the family's quarters) and attic during business hours and is free to roam the house and grounds at night. (This is of course on the condition that there are no funerary celebrations that evening.) He now puts his carpentry skills to work in the fashioning of coffins and caskets, but otherwise his time is his own.

Because they no longer have live-in servants, the family now has to take on more domestic labour (e.g., cleaning, laundering) to prevent their servants from discovering the lie. Jairus has commandeered cooking for his family, but will clean or launder clothes when bored. I should note here that both Jairus and Yasmin came from working-class backgrounds. They know how to do domestic labour; it was Roisia who grew up with servants and who had to learn to do without.

The relationships (between spouses, between child and parent) are loving, but not without strain. Jairus is fundamentally lonely. He feels like a ghost: he can't go back to work at the docks as a shipwright, he can't go out for a pint at the Maid with his mates, he can't go off to the countryside to visit with his side of the family, he can't even take a walk around the city at night for fear of discovery. So he grasps at any family time he can get, which is tough when he is functionally nocturnal and the rest of his small family is diurnal.

Yasmin, meanwhile, still deeply loves her husband even as a skeleton, but she also sees his pain. She is torn between keeping her daughter happy (father lives) and offering her husband a way out (father dies), and struggles with the guilt of whether or not a mercy killing would really be a mercy to Jairus... or to her. And then, some nights, she worries that perhaps she would not be able to kill him at all were she ever to try, and that would make everything all the worse.

Roisia, meanwhile, is largely ignorant of her parent's anxieties. She is still elated to have her father back in whatever capacity. She enjoys picking up the thread of their past lives: stargazing and charting with him, chatting to him from the kitchen table while he cooks, demanding that he retwist her locs even when he's certain she doesn't need a retwist, trying to outplay him at games, etc. She hides her studies in Necromancy as best as possible from her parents, but dreams of a day of restoring her father to the way he was, flesh and all.

TL;DR: "Works" is the operative word here. Everyone is doing their best with what they've got.
