Thing I kind of want to do: come up with some sort of turn-based combat system. Something that can be implimented in, like, Twine or whatever. I should stress that this is a "completely new at this and I don't know where to begin" sort of thing as of this writing.

I kind of want it to have no or minimal "random" elements, so that it's all it's resource-driven or something, i.e. you have a "dodge" meter that you spend to avoid attacks and so on. My reasoning behind this is that in an action game, it's possible in principle to avoid ever taking damage, if you're good enough at general timing and you know each encounter sufficiently well. Like, even without never-taking-damage, I was just able to beat Devil May Cry 5 on lower difficulties without any advance-preparation beyond keeping up with unlocks with my Red Orbs budget and mostly just button-mashing. However, in a turn-based system, timing is a non-issue because you're selecting menus at your leisure, and with ones based on randomness, you're basically trying to plan in advance to play the odds with respect to how much damage you're going to take, and/or use leveling and equipment to make sure your numbers are high enough compared to the enemy's. I want to figure out something more like action-games, where it is possible in principle to avoid getting hit and you don't need to do a lot of gruntwork to prepare for each major encounter.

My main goals are 1. you can scale the difficulty of individual encounters up and down without having to grind for experience points or whatever, you have the same general unmodified-base-stats the whole game; 2. it's not completely memorization-based, no "you need to already know what the enemy will do just to participate at all" except in, like, optional superbosses or whatever; and 3. it's screenreader-friendly. And, y'know, it has to be fun and engaging enough to do it a whole bunch of times in one game.

I kind of want to look into how diceless tabletop RPGs handle things. Maybe look for solo RPGs, too, since, well, this is also going to be be for singeplayer games.
