When I was in school I went to a friend's house to work on a project on a Friday afternoon. At about 6 or 6:30 when the sun was about to set her mom called us over to the livingroom. She lit two candles with my friend and then they proceeded to put the lit candles inside of a little cupboard so no one could see them. Me, a young jewish teenager asked her, my catholic friend, why they did that and she shrugged, said it was a family tradition to bring peace and prosperity, that the women of the family did it every friday evening and then hid the candles. They were very catholic, so I bit my tongue and we went back to her room to study.
This is just one of many, many, crypto jewish traditions that still exist in my hometown of Medellín, Colombia and I want to share a little bit about them with you.
Medellín is the capital city of a region called Antioquia and it is currently the second biggest city in my country. Now the weird thing about my region and my city more specifically is that it is in the middle of fucking nowhere, like we are in a valley in the middle of the andean mountains and it would take over two weeks by river, horse and river, and dunkey and mule to even get here before the invention of cars or trains.
Now Medellín was founded over 400 years ago, and families had been coming to the region for way before then, so that means that for centuries getting to my city from the sea or from the other big cities in the country was incredibly hard. This was by design, because Medellín itself was founded by about 28 families and we know for a fact that alteast half of them were crypto jews hidding from the Spanish Inquisition, and both before and the foundation more and more jewish families arrived to the region.
This is a known fact, the DNA of the people from the region has a lot of sepharadic jewish mixed in there. Early Colombian literature dating up to the 1845 would call the people of my region the Neogranadine Jews or the Colombian Jews. But because they were crypto jews the religion and most of the traditions were lost during the 400 years that have passed, now over 90% of the population is catholic and don't really know about their origins.
But some things stuck. And I want to tell you about them.
On the 7th night of December there is this pre-christmas festival called "El día de las velitas" or the little candle night that started and was unique to Antioquia. It's supposed to commemorate the candles that people had in the streets and the windows on the night Jesus was born and that helped Mary and Joseph to find their way. Do you know how this unique festival is celebrated in my city? People take to the streets to light candles, small colorful candles that they put in wooden planks or directly on the streets, it's the night that people decorate and turn on the christmas lights and it is so important and popular that we have an actual day off on the 8th of december.
Let me show you a few pictures

I don't think I need to explain this one. Even most goyim will know about Hannukah. But it is the weirdest thing when the dates coincide and we are all lighting candles together.
My dad was in the Jewish community board and we needed to rent a place to put our jewish daycare. They found this beautiful old house that had belonged to a family in colonial times but needed a little TLC. We had them remove some wooden floors because they were too old and rotting and found a huge Magen David made out stones in the center of the floor. The house also happened to have two separate kitchens and a mikveh or immersion bath in one of the rooms. These a very traditional things that colonial houses have in my region.
My grandmother converted to Judaism so I have a side from my family that is 100% from here and didn't arrive during the 20th century. I had the pleasure to meet both of my great grandparents from that side though they died when I was young. My grandma tells me that my greatgrandmother used to have one of these immersion baths in her house when she was growing up. Women were supposed to bathe in them after their periods had ended, my catholic great grandmother respected the mikveh traddition more than I ever have.
(I wish I had photos from that specific house but this happened over ten years ago, I'll show you some immersion baths from a different colonial houses that are also in my city)

Now how about we talk about traditional clothes. I'm sure most of you have heard of Ponchos, which are traditional in the Andean region, well the one from Antioquia is a little different and it's always supposed to be worn with a hat. Let's see if you can spot what I mean.

A few years ago Spain decided to grant citizenship to the descendants of the Jewish people that they had exiled in 1492. To get it you had to prove through family trees that your family had been Jewish. My city got the most ammount of passports out of everyone in the world, more than Israel. I could have applied from both my family that came from Egypt in the 20th century (we still have the keys to our house in Spain) or through my catholic side, as both of my grandmother's last names applied. I didn't but I could have.
I don't really know why I decided to finally write this post. I have so many more stories. I just think it's both incredibly sad that so much Jewish culture and people were lost but also it's a little heartwarming to see what survived even centuries down the line.
#it took me years to decide to finally write this because i didn't want to put where i live out on the internet#but fuck it#i still don't know how i feel about this#it's a bit of mourning what could've been and a bit of look a this isn't it neat#there is so much more to say about this topic but the post is too long#like how a lot of jews changed their last name to “Rojas” which spelled backwards means “lizcor” or to remember and they still forgot#or how there is a movement of reclaiming the jewish roots we have three re-emerging jewish communities in our city#one of which already converted fully and they are WAY more obvservant than my regular traditional community#crypto jews#conversos#jumblr#jewish#jews#judaism#jewish history#colombia#medellin#lationamerica#latin america#south america

An Omegaverse Au in which Heaven blames the omega human Adam for ‘tempting’ the omega Lucifer. As Adam is the one marked, he’s the damage they discard first. Demanding for Lucifer to right the wrongs of disrupting the human legacy, forbidden from both Heaven and Hell till he can for fills his ‘duties’ as an omega himself.
As the one marked and discarded, Adam feels every intimacy Lucifer has and every birth. Each betrayal sinking him into a state of madness and resentment.
And as the humans begin to fall to hell, Adam slowly builds his empire on spite and force of will. Lacking the might of a natural angel and the authority of an alpha, Adam has to learn to use his body and mind to maintain his dominance.
The sins are birthed by him through an attorney announced every two hundred years by whom ever can win his challenge. Lucifer’s claim makes the process agony, each conception worse than the last. But Adam relishes in the pain as a defiance for the angel he blames his banishment upon. Even if the next union and birth could kill him.
When Heaven finally allows Lucifer to visit Hell it’s just in time for 7th and final grand attorney.
Lucifer is very much a yandere in this which is what drew Heaven’s eye to begin with. He’s rendered human while on earth but refuses to allow Lilith to bite him even when birthing the children.
He lives as a human for nearly 800 years before finally dying, outliving far pass expectation. (Or so they say). And even then Heaven is reluctant to allow Lucifer to see Adam. But as God’s favorite and Devil’s games going around again for the final heir, surely Lucifer can finally abandon his claim. Surely.
———-
Lucifer came to reunite. To clear airs by any means and bare his neck to the omega he’s pinned for. Even through Eden, the Wastelands of his trapped human life. This had been the moment Lucifer prayed to make right. To save all that is left of himself for Adam. But the mother of demons wants none of it. Even if the next heir outside his incomplete bond bares kills him.
Pretty birds and pretty words.

Boba Fett VS Jodo Kast: Twin Engines of Destruction
Boba Fett (To Jodo Kast): "You're NO one! Not Dala, not Shysa! NOBODY!" - Star Wars Twin Engines of Destruction
Always ❤️ this line. It showed that Boba knew of Tobbi Dala & Fenn Shysa AND he also knew what they looked like. Proving that Boba was well aware of not only his Mandalorian heritage but also well-known/ important Mandalorian figures….
And I ❤️ how Boba upheld the Mandalorian Tradition of reclaiming/ removing Mandalorian Armor from all encountered individuals that are Non-Mandalorian (Similar to how Din Djarin repossessed Boba Fett's Armor from Cobb Vanth).
And last but not least, I can't leave out the classic Boba Fett line: "This IS my face."

another thing that i just noticed is that the dwarves have now had done to them by the elves what we’d thought the elves had done to them by humans, at least before inquisition. cut down in their peak and permanently ruined, left to scrabble for the broken pieces of their history
not to say it’s an inherently bad choice because oppression isn’t that straightforward, but it sure was an interesting choice to shift the “they destroyed our way of life and fractured our society and we ARE allowing ourselves to feel angry about it and reclaim our history and maybe use that to rebuild what we once had” narrative from the elves to the dwarves. like if that’s the story you really wanted to tell, you could have also given it to like. bellara
#the fall of the titans feels very similar to what we had originally thought the sacking of arlathan was#so there may be more there to uncover. and i dont lnow that i trust them like that again lmao#and it feels especially. i dont want to say insidious but tone deaf at the very least#to shift that from elves (long history of racial coding and marginalization in this series) to dwarves (much less of that)#AND it being told from harding’s POV when she’s not really part of any dwarven society and never has been#feels very much like. white person whose family has been in north america for a few generations reading about european traditions and#trying to incorporate them into their life. anger over how their ancestors were coerced into abandoning their culture to be considered white#so youre left with nothing and are trying to reclaim That. listen it’s also a valid desire i guess but very telling that youre choosing#to tell this story while actively destroying the chance to tell the other kind of story#and also there’s something about how culture doesnt exist in a vacuum#i know some europeans accuse americans of cosplaying their culture and while on one hand that might just be refusal to acknowledge that#culture isnt a monolith and might evolve differently somewhere else. there is a bit of truth to it imo#anyway what im saying is this is absolutely what underground dwarves think of harding#we dont know enough about stalgard#kinda got the impression he was just a guy who lived there rather than part of kal sharok’s government or shaperate#he’s one guy and his opinion doesnt reflect kal sharok. i dont think orzammar is necessarily wrong for not cooperating#they are famously a very closed society and also this is someone from outside that trying to instruct them on their shit#same as when solas tried to ‘’’reason’’’ with the dalish#mine#datv spoilers

Raised in Amphibia AU Marcy has a very complicated relationship with Andrias. They love each other and see each other as father and daughter. He never yells at her, never raised a hand at her, yet she's so utterly terrified of him. She doesn't even know why she feels like this, but all she wants is to not lose his love and to make him proud, and feels like she's always in debt, always failing at earning her place, always desperately two steps behind, never quite pleasing him.
She gives up so much of herself to earn his love and approval... she keeps most of her less useful interests secret, she doesn't have any friends except for maybe Lady Olivia, she drops whatever she's doing, no matter how important, to go to her father when he calls her, she "forgets" about her feelings when they're inconvenient to him...
She used to wear her hair long because he liked it. He never pressured her to wear it like that, possibly didn't even notice the effects his words had on her, but he once said it's what's traditional for the Leviathan royal family, and that it looked good in her, and she was determined to keep hers as long as possible, until one day she can't handle all the stress and anxiety and she desperately cuts it all in her bedchambers. Now it's so short, barely reaching her jaw. She cried herself to sleep that night. Andrias didn't say anything about it, only that it looked nice, and Marcy feels her heart sink - she let it grow for years no matter how uncomfortable it was or how little she liked it for nothing.
#amphibia#raised in amphibia au#marcy wu#andrias leviathan#marcy leviathan#princess marcy#princess marcy leviathan#cutting her hair wasn't premeditated. she did it while having a breakdown#it was her nervous system's impulse to fight in any way possible. to reclaim as much control as she possibly could.#only for andrias to later gaslight her into thinking there was something to fight against#that she was just imagining things to think her hair represented anything#it makes her feel really stupid looking back#and the court whispers about her change in look and how non-traditional she looks. everyone already questioned her status#as a legitimate leviathan princess and rightful heir to the throne#some even denied she was a newt at all! could you believe that? her dad is a newt - what else could she be?#now she breaks tradition by cutting her hair as short as a boy's? oh what would her grandfather say!#the odd rouguish farm girl with curly hair and a bright smile who claims not to be neither frog nor toad not newt despite looking#an awful lot like Marcy...#she visits her in Newtopia every now and then and she had the biggest smile when she saw her again after her little Anxiety Makeover#she ruffled her hair and told her she looked ''amazing'' and ''really really beautiful'' and ''absolutely adorable''#it was rare for people to think Marcy was pretty - most newts thought she was monstruously deformed -#but this girl never held back on compliments. maybe she saw her in a better light because they were equally deformed#but it always makes Marcy's chest bloom with warmth#and that day as they were catching up - chatting in the palace rooftops - sharing sweets stolen from the kitchens - Marcy felt so *free*#my posts#marcanne#technically sashannarcy but like eventually

I'm reading these tattoo history books (because I am an eternal art student that can't do an apprenticeship without being a nerd about it) and because of Japans huge influence on all Western tattooing and it's ties to the yakuza, I am now above averagely educated on yakuza tattoos... But honestly I've never been into reading about organised crime so I don't know shit about anything else yakuza related.
The 'yakuza' section of my brain is now a big folder with tattoo information and images and next to it is just a note titled 'anything I know about the yakuza' which reads: - weirdly chill and accommodating to '50s to '70s American and Dutch tattooers coming over asking all kinds of questions about their tattoos - weirdly chill and accommodating to that guy asking them to review one of the yakuza video games
So my conclusion based on my extremely limited information is that just like on a first date, when communicating with the yakuza you should find some common interests or ask them about themselves. This will go great. what crime.
#I'm sure I would benefit from doing some reading on them to gain cultural context but I just went down a rabbit hole reading about the Māori#reclaiming Ta Moko (their tattoo tradition that was outlawed and almost entirely lost due to Western colonisation)#and as interesting as everything is I can't do hours of deepdiving on every page this book has 500 of them#let's put a pin in it there are several books that solely focus on tattooing in Japan

Hello! I have been following your art for awhile now- I just had to refollow because Tumblr is a webbed site. If this is rude to say, ignore it, but I find your pieces inspiried! They truly are so cool. It got me to get a set of caran d' ache water soluble pastels myself! I have been hitting a bit of an art block lately, and I wanted to try something different than what I have been doing.
I just have a question about what you draw/paint ON. I see a lot of what you are describing as reclaimed support - what is it and how/where do you get that? It is wood correct? Is it a specific type of wood? Is there any specific way to prepare it for painting?
Thank you for taking the time for reading!
Hello there! Thanks for your ask! I'm really glad you're inspired and trying new things, and with my favorite art toy, no less. The wax pastels are truly a joy to work with. Like the crayon of my childhood dreams.
I typically paint on scrap wood. I will scavenge plywood, old shelves, lumber, furniture panels, flooring, etc. and prep them for painting. Part of my personal set of values I try to live by is to buy as little new things as possible and that counts for art stuff, too. I have a video about how I like to prep scrap wood here: https://youtu.be/9Ni8aIgB7F4?si=fBAaaB1fSWQC4bfS
Lately my friend and fellow artist Sasha reminded me that mounting paper on the scrap wood is also a thing! So I've been doing a bit of that lately, too, and it has been really nice for pastels and colored pencils. (I mount paper usually with Nori paste and/or matte acrylic medium.)
When I use words like "support" instead of scrap wood, sometimes that's just shorthand for "an archival panel of indeterminate material", such as my stash of 12"x16" PVC panels I got from a fellow art supply hoarder friend. It's strange to say "mixed media on plastic sign material" because that... doesn't necessarily bring up a clear idea...? But yeah, a lot (like the heron series) are done on sanded and gesso'd PVC panels that were once intended for outdoor signage.
Salvaging your own surfaces takes more time and work, but costs barely anything. It works with my rough and natural aesthetic so I lean into the wood's imperfections. Look, this one even has a hole in it! And you can see the grain and the pop-and-lock groove on the left. This was a piece of cedar flooring.
![Tumblr media](https://64.media.tumblr.com/b901731bf0691bdbb016912b2b22447c/a3f73aeb6c1aede0-ef/s540x810/587b52fa83a602c163020095ac76264056636bd6.jpg)
Boy he's a sad little guy isn't he
tl;dr I paint on flat sturdy things likely to last a long time. If you can sand, gesso, and attach wire hanging hardware to the back-- you're good. Go nuts.
