Do you have an account on DW where you've reblogged the post about AO3 and nonfiction? Of, if not, may I reblog it over there and to pillowfort in the fan writers communities with a link credit back to you? It's really good information and I'd like to see it be more widely available.
Though I have a personal DW blog (under the vorpalgirl name) and we do now have a comm over there (see previous post!), I have not cross-posted that particular one, no! I also don’t yet have a Pillowfort, though I hope/plan to get one soon, so I couldn’t post it there yet.I too would like to see it more widely available though and it’d be nice to have the backup copies as it were! If you want to make the effort of doing the cross-post for me and are willing to credit me by name and with correct links/credits, I’m actually pretty okay with that, so long as if you’re copying my text verbatim, you make it clear that that’s what you’re doing! ^_^Suggested crediting: Original posting was for the inu-fiction.tumblr.com blog and done by Vorpalgirl, who can be found at:- Tumblr: vorpalgirl.tumblr.com - Dreamwidth: vorpalgirl.dreamwidth.org- AO3: at https://archiveofourown.org/users/VorpalGirl/pseuds/VorpalGirl
You could also note if you like that the originating blog I posted it on, Inu-Fiction, is being archived and opened up as a DW Community at https://inu-fiction.dreamwidth.org/
It might be nice also to include that The Inu-Fiction Archive is a Collection over there now, located at https://archiveofourown.org/collections/inufictionarchive , where they can even see some of the tagging practices at work :) I know that’s a lot of links, but again: I don’t trust tumblr or any one site to be completely guaranteed stable forever (but ESPECIALLY tumblr), so I feel it’s a good idea to cover all the bases ^^;;

recentlyfolded reblogged your post and added:
I think that in this, as with most areas of sensitivity (I’m also seeing this issue with cultural appropriation), we have kind of a slippery slope. If we only write (/wear/buy/know about) what is in our own specific genetic heritage and personal experience, we create a zillion different silos and fundamentally render everyone but ourselves ultimately unknowable. On a crowded planet, this simply feeds the tribalism that is increasingly dividing us by othering everyone with whom we don’t share every similarity. As a moral person, that seems to me to be going in the wrong direction.
Rather than rendering every element of every other culture’s art taboo, every experience of illness or disaster off limits, can we not find a common thread of humanity? What does a character learn by being affected by [something] that leads a reader to humanize real sufferers of that situation? Can we look to the richness of other cultures or the challenges of other conditions to inform our appreciation for the diversity of our world and the courage of its inhabitants?
And if we write from a non-experiencing viewpoint, do we have to modify our writing to suit everyone who feels like poking it with a stick? Or can we do our best research and write a fictional account from the standpoint of that one character who can, perhaps, admit that their experience is not universal?
These are difficult things that take a delicate and courteous touch, but I fear that the road to oversimplification, to binary answers to questions like this, is one that fosters only alienation rather than appreciation.
Yeah it does feel like a sort of complicated topic that has different layers to it, which has definitely lead to some conflicted feelings on my part, but I guess like you said it’s just important to do as much research as we can and try to be as respectful as we can. Thank you! ^^

This is why I personally default to they/them in all situations where it's not specified. I really wish that this would become the social default, just taking the whole issue of gender out of non-intimate conversation for all of us.
@recentlyfolded i agree, I’m trying to use they/them as my default as well. in this situation a coworker mistakenly misgendered someone to me due to an assumption about their name and i wanted to correct them in my response so that the person in question didn’t have to deal with it when they interact over email. seems my simple to the point (he/him) did the trick well enough.

I was going to reblog your post about AO3 ratings and include a comment, but after rewording it a couple times decided that it still sounded too much like calling you out—which is confrontational and not actually my intent. So here's what I didn't post:I think you may have a misapprehension about the interests of older readers. I am perfectly happy to (and regularly do) read fics of all ratings. Being 70 has not reset my interests to those of a 12-year-old. (pt 1)
(pt 2) Now, if there’s actually more context to the statement you’re making and you’re just meaning ones that would embarrass *you* if *your* grandmother read ones of that rating that *you* wrote, that’s a family issue and a different thing than describing what older readers should or shouldn’t read. (cont)
(pt3) Am I being a bit quibbly here? Only because so much of tumblr fandom seems to believe that fandom is a space of the very young and that older people are of some odd other species that doesn’t really belong here. And that makes me sad for its narrowness of viewpoint. Pls read this in a voice of fondness, not snark.
First off, I do wish to apologize. That wasn’t my intent and I was thinking of my own grandparents. But I can see how it could be misconstrued. I’ve gone back and edited the original post.
I have plenty of fandom friends around your age, and I am a strong believer that fandom does not and should not have an upper age limit. As a woman rapidly approaching 40 I’ve certainly seen some of the discussion.
Fandom is for everybody, fanfiction is for everybody and the only real age requirement is about who is old enough to acess adult content.

Really? Judging you for a diet coke? As far as indulgences go, that's really mild. They should maybe get lives of their own. Harrumph.
Isn’t it bizarre? A lot of people are very strongly anti-artificial sweeteners. One coworker has a wife with chronic pain, and there’s a lot of interest in removing from toxins, healthy diet and all in those circles. Another’s just a young mom and a healthcare provider so she tends to hear about all the trendy theories on organic, anti-GMO, all that.
But really. Not their business, and of all the things to get judgy over. I could do a lot worse.
(In fact, I do do a lot worse, just not at the office. :-) )

thank you!! :D
thursdayj replied to your photoset “blueberry picking 7.8.18”
this looks highly superior to blackberry picking, which required me to wade through an ocean of briars XD
ooh that does not sound pleasant lol. we actually weren’t able to go blackberry picking that day but I still think I’d want to x)
recentlyfolded reblogged your photoset and added:
Mmm, blueberries. Our berries are about at this stage of not-yet-ripe, here in Anchorage. I have a few tiny bushes I transplanted from our old house into our current yard, and this is their first year bearing. I go out in the yard and whisper encouragement to them, tell them that they’re getting big and strong and need to remember to grow hearty roots to support them as they grow even larger. We were careful to bring along the plants and soil from around them, since blueberries are very particular about their local microenvironment, and the whole little community seems to be flourishing.
ahh that’s so cool that you have your own blueberry bushes!! and that’s so cute omg :3 I feel like I would really enjoy growing my own blueberries or strawberries at some point, if I could manage it lol

recentlyfolded replied to your post:based on the latest promo pics for the lying...
Actually there’s a 70s British TV show/hospital/pedophilia scandal that UK fans have mentioned might be a more pertinent reference for this. Look up Jimmy Savile on wikipedia.
Oh, I know Jimmy Savile. He actually did a Doctor Who thing once, A Fix With Sontarans. Knowing what he did, him hosting a kid Doctor Who wish-fulfillment thing is utterly terrifying.
I’d hope it’s taking on Trump over Savile, because Savile’s a pretty awful subject to handle and he’s also been dead six years, whereas taking on Trump would be more topical.

recentlyfolded replied to your post “One of the one things I took positivitely from last night’s episode:...”
This only works if you believe that is really Mycroft saying it. If you believe that this whole ep is Sherlock's recurring dream, it's Sherlock. If that, is it a certainty or a hope? See, less and less straightforward.
I don’t see a damn thing.
If the show just wasted 1/3 of their series on A FUCKING DREAM after a special that was 95% A FUCKING DREAM, then Moffat and Gatiss are absolutely and completely horrible writers.
TAB is okay, because it was a special. It was an excuse to do a Victorian-Era think. It didn’t give us any real plot for the show.
But seriously... An entire episode of the proper series was a dream? With no indication by the end of it that it was a dream? No, that is just AWFUL WRITING.
Mycroft knew Mary was an assassin. He’d worked with her before. He chose not to tell Sherlock and John about it, because he knew she was a good person who just wanted a fresh start.
Deal with it.

Ten Things Meme
Thank you to @recentlyfolded for tagging me. I’m way less active on Tumblr these days, but I’m going to tag some peeps with the intention and pleasure of swinging back in. I’ve missed many of you “out there.”Without further ado, here are Ten Things About Me:
1. I am good a picking up foreign languages. Mais oui!
2. I quit my job, sold my car and moved to Lyon, France, when I was 30. I didn’t speak French, but eventually I learned it. I returned to California after about three years. Lesson learned: I thought I’d find a certain kind of happiness there. I was wrong. You know that saying: “No matter where you go, there you are”? (I believe it’s attributed to Confucius.) Well, true ‘dat. These days I try to remember, “Happiness is not a destination, it’s a way of life.” It’s helped, in the long run.
3. White powdered donuts are my Achilles’ heel. I love ‘em in mass quantity.
4. My dad was my greatest influence and inspiration growing up. He’s long gone now, died in 1994, and I miss him. He used to read ‘The Rubiayat of Omar Khayyam’ when he was at sea in the Pacific during WWII. I have his copy and i re-read it at various times of my life. Different parts of it leap out at me each time as if my dad is talking to me, counseling me on Life and Time. My mom died in 2014. She was 86. She was quite a character who just got nuttier as she got older. Some thought she was rather eccentric. I think she just learned to give no fucks and became happier for it. I hope I can be more like her when I grow up.
5. I believe in karma. As an aside, Trump and his cabal, including the fucking do-nothing complicit treason-wheel GOP Congress, will get their comeuppance. Meuller time is coming and the public, stupid as the 35% +/- are, have to be brought around to see the criminality and utter debauchery of what’s happening. These days are excruciating in the meantime—my alcohol consumption has increased tenfold—but I have to believe justice is coming. I will continue to Tweet with a vengeance (@kim_zep), march when it’s time, and vote in November. Cheers!
6. My daily driver in 2014 used to be my dream car: a ‘63 Ford Falcon. Regrettably, I sold it. Now my dream care is an electric ‘63 Ford Falcon.
7. Other people’s passions are contagious when they’re true. That’s largely how I got sucked into the Sherlock fandom—before S4 came along (#TheFinalDisappointment). I am so grateful for Tumblr which is where I discovered the amazing, blindingly intelligent, hilariously funny, courageous, creative and talented people (much like yourself, @recentlyfolded). I have learned so much about gender issues, literature, social issues, subtext, women’s issues, filming and memes (oh the memes!) I am a better parent to my two teenage kidlettes because of it. So, thanks Tumblr Sherlock fandom, from the bottom of my heart.
8.I love ... LOVE to surf. Each day surfing is a new beginning. It’s a connection with the earth and it keeps me in the moment. The other thing that keeps me in the moment? My dog Sam and Jonesy the cat. Best. Souls. Ever.
9. I’m a total Taurus. ‘Nuff said.
10. Wine and coffee are wonderful. Coincidentally, I have become quite prolific at swearing. This might be something I live to regret. ...Then again, fuck it. :)
And tagging: @sleepisnotmydivision, @may-shepard, and anyone else who might like to play. No pressure nor expectation. Just fun and games. ... Staying tuned!

Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary by Obotligtnyfiken
“What is it that you want me to do?” “I want you to shoot me.”
Missing scenes from His Last Vow, The Abominable Bride and The Six Thatchers
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences Archive warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply Fandom: Sherlock (TV). Relationships: Mary Morstan/John Watson, Janine & Mary Morstan Characters: Mary Morstan, Janine (Sherlock), John Watson, Sherlock Holmes, Mycroft Holmes, Vivian Norbury Additional Tags: Missing Scene, Undercover, Episode: s03e03 His Last Vow, Post-Episode: The Abominable Bride, Episode: s04e01 The Six Thatchers, POV Mary Morstan, Mary is Not Nice
Part 5 of the series Chickens Coming Home to Roost , independent fanfics inspired by prompts based on one of my twelve “Moffat’s Chickens” + one or two more words. “Moffat’s Chickens” are ideas from the hiatus about what Steven Moffat could have meant when he said in an interview that chickens were coming home to roost in s4.
Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary was inspired by the prompt “That wife ...” and "hiking boots” that I got from a friend. I will soon make a post asking for more prompts, let me know if you want to be tagged.
Part 3 of the new series Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary, which consists of fics from Chickens Coming Home to Roost that belong to the same story - my “meta”, if you will, of how Mary could be interpreted within the show’s universe.
Tags under the cut.
Please let me know if you don’t want to be tagged in the future!

@recentlyfolded asked for the pumpkin recipe. Honestly, it’s barely a recipe at all. But say you have 2 ramekins (2 servings). Spray them with non-stick spray.
Mix 2 cups pumpkin with 2 eggs, sweetener to taste (I use stevia), a dash of salt (or a little more if you like salty/sweet WHICH I DO), and spices to taste (cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger). Pop the ramekins into a pan half-filled with hot water and bake at, whatever maybe 350? for maybe 30 or 40 minutes.
That’s it. :)

@dearbluetravelers: It is survivable I promise! Bring a floppy/big hat and sunglasses
Haha, yeah, I know it is, it’s just that heat is really, really uncomfortable to me, more so than for most people, sometimes to the point where breathing becomes difficult. Yup, I was planning on doing that!
@recentlyfolded: Wear loose clothing but be covered, especially your feet (hot pavement). Linen is best; cotton if you have only that; never synthetics other than athletic breathable fabric. If you don't have a big hat, carry an umbrellas as parasol. And do what the women in Spain do: carry and use a (folding, paper) fan; it makes a lot of difference!
Oh, thanks for the advice! I don’t have much linen clothing, but I do have cotton, so I’ll do that. And yes, I was actually planning on wearing my big floppy hat and taking a fan with me (actually have one from Barcelona :D). Don’t know how much better it will be, but all I’m hoping for is that I don’t feel like I was pushed into a hot pool fully dressed.
#reply#'temperate climate' they said#this is not temperate this is HOT ARID DESERT climate#normal temperatures should be like 28 degrees Celsius#not 45!!!!!!#after this weekend temperatures will go back to being in the 20 range#thank god

Well, I think we have a pretty explicit quote from the writers about how they were looking to fill in the details that ACD left out and in particular that they felt that Watson was an unreliable narrator and often covered up the interesting stuff in choosing what and how he published. So this seems to be essentially what they set out to do (leaving aside the whole quality-of-writing and plausibility issues).
Do you have the quote, by chance? (Paging @skulls-and-tea ...) That does sound familiar, but I can’t remember specifics offhand.

Replies, some long overdue. Many in all caps, as it turns out.

I really enjoy these comparisons. I have only begun to reap the rewards of fan fiction post-S4, as I am desperate for MORE Sherlock and there is no guarantee of future series. Fascinating to see how A03 has trended over time. Thanks.
Thank you!! I missed this reply at first, but really appreciate the feedback. And may all of (y)our fanfic and canon desires be fulfilled! <3
