Become a medieval literature specialist, they said. It'll be fun, they said.
Anyway this is how different versions of Táin Bó Cúailnge relate to each other. Clear as mud.

Dont even need to read the other options man. Once i saw smut with YANDERE OVERBLOT MALLEUS I knew it was the one 😍😍
Prepare yourself for the VERY HORNY VERY SEXY VERY(?) YANDERE OVERBLOT DRAGON (^^
We're all sick to this guy.
Not written for April 1st. I am serious
First of all, I'm too busy accepting the loss of Cendrillon. ( ˘︹˘ )
Because only minor corrections of that article were left, but the Malleus article has only the title.
The text below has not been recension.
Correction: it's more than just a title now. It's really long and the first chapter is so long that I have to divide it and transfer it to part 2, but if this happens, part 2 will be long, it will be transferred to part 3, part 3 will be transferred to part4, I will cook all the parts I made and throw them away. The article you have never read has a draft of more than 5 pages in my notebook and I keep adding or removing parts of it. So why am I striving for this? Because my posts with Smut or Malleus are my most popular posts and they really reach a lot of people. The problem is that when you look at people who write really well, they don't get the effort they deserve. I want to see the value I deserve and write quality articles. Not just me, most writers want to write good articles.
The other important thing is that my first language is not English and since I write in my own language first, some sentences have errors and some words and phrases do not have the exact equivalent. Previously, I received many warnings for my spelling and grammatical errors in my writings. I'm writing and editing as best I can so this doesn't happen again.
Guess who hates themselves for deciding to start such a long series :) ✋
The intro is so shity that I changed it 4 times. I'm not going to throw all the parts one after the other. This means that after part 1 is shared I will share another post and an AU intro. 2 Au presentations after part 2 and part 3 etc.
The thing that pisses me off the most is I have too many ghost readers. Burn in hell. It's tiring to take care of them, but they're as insignificant to me as like a armpit hair.
Part 1 will come on Wednesday. Because I want to throw my posts in a certain order properly. (I will share the plan schedule with you after I respond to this message.) If you find it long… there's nothing I can do. I am dealing with 9 articles at once. 4 of them are Au. For one of them, I have to redraw each character because it is required. (For Zoo AU) . It is very difficult to draw a picture with fingers on the phone.💀
And for everyone who supports me, for everyone who sends me messages of self-confidence that motivates me to write, from me to you imaginary Trey cakes and Llia's casserole made from Jade's mushrooms ☺
If you have read this long article to the end, please message me anonymously or anonymously, inform me and share your ideas. Talking to me in this way both makes me happy and motivates me.

What would you describe as your ideal “accurate,” or at least acceptable depiction of the TDD in fantasy fiction?
You know...it's funny with me, because I think that people always think that I have really high standards when it comes to this sort of thing. Like "Oh, if you haven't read THIS obscure Dindshenchas story that was only edited in 1910 and never given a proper translation, you're dead to me." And like...obviously, I LOVE when that sort of stuff is included. I LOVE when it's very clear that an author's done their work, but I don't expect anyone to get their degree to do it. (Though...I...did kind of do that, but I'm also very much a "do as I say, not as I do" example, given that I honestly still have no idea how I ended up getting this far.)
And I should note that, the books that I've individually talked about aside...I do keep up a collection of Schlocky Depictions of the Tuatha Dé. I find them highly entertaining while also being really relevant to the pop culture arm of my research, since I'm always genuinely fascinated in...how people are receiving these stories, what they're taking away from them, how they're getting re-interpreted, and what these interpretations say about us. You know, what does it mean when the Fomoire keep getting depicted as demonic monsters? Why do we keep trying to draw this sort of binary between GOOD characters and EVIL characters that didn't really exist in the same way in the literature? (I'd never say the Fomoire are good, but they aren't as distinct from the TDD as people want them to be.) I love trash, all kinds of trash. Give me your smutty trash, your unedited trash, your vanity press trash, your Oh My God This Was Written In The 80s Trash, your "Read Lady Gregory once five years ago and decided to work off of that" trash, your cardboard cutout characters trash. I will read it. And I will love it. You would not believe the books that are on my "most sought after" list. You would not. You would not believe the things I have willingly and enthusiastically exposed my eyeballs to.
But, to actually answer your question...I don't care about accuracy. Not in the way you think. Because you're dealing with a very fluid tradition, you can never quite keep continuity because there was never a continuity to begin with. That doesn't mean that I'm saying "Eh, who cares. Don't do research at all!" Rather that...I feel like it's important to learn the rules as best as you can and then break them. And I've seen some adaptations crash and burn because they tried to bring too much in from too many sources (Pursuit being the immediate one that comes to mind even though, imo, it was brilliant in many ways.)
So, I would like something that is aware of the sources, but that also...wants to do them justice. I'm working on an adaptation of CMT, so I have my own biases, but the first thing I really wanted to do was to figure out how to use the sources I had to build the characters up and to flesh out the story, while also doing my own thing.
With the TDD, one thing that a lot of adaptations fall into is treating them as infallible. And if they were infallible, I wouldn't be interested in them. Hell, for that matter, the medieval Irish wouldn't have been interested in them. Lugh kills people. Regularly. And, in fact, most frequently commits kinslaying. Nuada has jealousy issues and in, say, Oidheadh Chloinne Tuireann and the Early Modern CMT, was...not a particularly strong or inspiring ruler. The Dagda is willing to kill three men to bring back his own son, only bringing them back from the dead when his son urges him to (and that's not including the things he does that need a tw), as well as being...let's be honest, a pretty terrible father to Óengus, who, himself, as well as being a bit of a scam artist, does...drown a guy in horse piss. Midir is implied in one recension of Togail Bruidne Dá Derga to have caused Conaire's death because of his pissing match with Eochaid Airem and his union with Étaín seems to have been Pretty Damn Illegal by medieval Irish standards (or at least a dick move). Mannanán tries to pull a reverse Green Knight to troll the Fianna. Bres is...Bres. And all the Tuatha Dé who were alive at a certain time definitely were complicit in what happened to the Fir Bolg.
And, obviously, I'm not trying to #cancel medieval Irish literature. That would be...very self-defeating on my end, though I've long since said that the day someone tries to bring Bres Discourse to me is the day I officially yeet myself into the sun. Rather, what I'm saying is that there are a LOT of gray areas people can explore, and that tend to get glossed over. The fantasy genre DESPERATELY want the TDD to be elves, this sort of idealized, wise, powerful immortal race who are all pretty and white/blonde haired, who act as counsellors and guides to mortals, and who all speak in this sort of airy, resigned tone. And...well. They CAN be wise. They are definitely powerful. And they are immortal in the sense of "does not die of old age." But they are also petty and vindictive.
And, likewise, people often feel the need to drag the enemies of the Tuatha Dé down - the Fomoire and the Fir Bolg are prominent examples. The Fomoire I can understand -- they WERE, in their ninth century incarnations, based on the Vikings. That being said, there are ways authors could show them as antagonistic while still showing they're human. We don't need to see Cethlenn committing human sacrifices in her opening scene (yes, I have seen this.) And the Fir Bolg, honestly...did nothing wrong and, in the one long prose text of the First Battle of Magh Tuireadh that survives, I would argue that they're the heroes.
Basically...my ideal version is one that has some grounding in...at least Lebor Gabála Érenn (...only the part with the Tuatha Dé and the Fir Bolg, I would not ask anyone to read the whole thing), Cath Finntrágha, Tochmarc Étain, Cath Maige Tuired, Cath Maige Tuireadh Conga, Oidheadh Chloinne Tuireann, and a few Dindshenchas poems (I know, I know it's a long list, I swear I wanted to only bring in about 2-3, but they're all so GOOD), but that is also aware that, because it's a fluid tradition, they have the freedom to break free and do their own thing. I want to see the Tuatha Dé written as fully realized characters with their own flaws and merits and weird little quirks, and I want to see their enemies depicted as people, as well. I want to see nuanced bonds between all of them, especially with the complicated family dynamics. I want to see a society that...in some ways, is very beautiful -- wonderful poetry, a highly complex legal system, rich clothing, fine jewelry, brave warriors, clever poets...while also showing the dark side. The fantasy genre is wonderful for exploring the complexities of a society and worldbuilding in general, so you can really have some fun with a world inspired by medieval Ireland.

for the reverse unpopular opinion meme, tell me something about... lugh
BEST bitch.
Like, people think that I HATE Lugh, because he’s a homicidal bitch who has an “Ends justify the means” mentality, but, actually, I ADORE him for exactly those reasons. Every time he shows up in a text, you know you’re in for a good time, usually because Murder. Never 5get that, when he shows up in Bail in Scáil, he literally? Tosses his spear at Conn? Just for the Hell of it? When he decides to kill Bres, he doesn’t just poison his cup or anything, but creates THREE HUNDRED VATS OF FAKE POISON COW. Like. That was SO UNNECESSARY, but he did it anyway. The motherfucking HAWK OF ACHILL adores Lugh because of how many bodies he left behind him? THE HAWK OF ACHILL, aka The Bird Who Doesn’t Like Anyone And Is Notably Homicidal, ADORES Lugh because of how many people he killed. I love it. I love that his response to the Fomoire tax collectors in Oidheadh Chlonne Tuireann is to say “I have a strong desire to kill these men” and that he then proceeds to say it again.
For someone who’s generally accepted to represent order and law (the invention of assemblies, for example), Lugh has this inexplicably CHAOTIC energy that I adore. Lugh....he’s always front and center, he’s always stealing the spotlight. In the Early Modern recension of CMT, Nuada even POINTS IT OUT, saying that he’ll take all the spotlight while the Tuatha Dé will get no glory of their own. This is something people NOTICED even at the time.
Also, Lugh, despite coming off as quite cold and single-minded, actually cares DEEPLY for those around him, to truly tragic results? Like, the entire boys’ troop of Ulster’s killed and he doesn’t care because his son’s safe. His wife cheats on him and he kills the son of one of the most powerful men of the Tuatha Dé. His father’s killed and Lugh BREAKS DOWN at his grave and then is willing to tear the Tuatha Dé in two to get his revenge, regardless of the collateral damage. Lugh...loves, deeply, painfully, and, for those he loves, he’d let the world burn, and that’s a trait of his that is DEEPLY under-appreciated.
And, in one of the bardic poems, there’s a very distinct implication that Lugh wasn’t always beloved by the Tuatha Dé - Gray interprets it as him having been bullied, I think it might be a reference to the Early Modern recension of the 2nd battle, either way, it implies there are Reasons for Lugh being Like That, and it gets more deeply tragic when you consider that he’d have been growing up IN BRES’ REIGN. Of COURSE Lugh would feel ostracized. Of course Lugh would do everything to prove that he’s in with the Tuatha Dé, even if it involves kinslaying. Even if it involves murder. Because the Fomoire aren’t really PEOPLE, are they? They’re not like him at all. Because he’s Right and Good and they’re not, because if he was to have that idea challenged, if he had to admit that there was anything he had in common with them, it’d break him. Because that’s how he survived.
Honestly, I can’t love Bres and hate Lugh, simply because they WORK with one another - I can’t love Bres for being complex, dramatic, and flawed and then hate Lugh for exactly the same reasons. The two of them are the other’s mirror image, they fit. And, really, while both of them would HATE the comparison, they were both used by the Tuatha Dé and then tossed away, the tragedy is that neither of them ever FULLY realized it. (Cú Chulainn also fits in this mold.) Lugh did everything he could to become the shining hero, to fit into the societal ideal - Bres decided to break the system. They both tried to adapt to the world as best as they could and, the tragedy for both of them is that they were doomed anyway.

is cú chulainn an incarnation of lug mac ethlenn? probably not.
okay so i said i’d talk a bit more about how the cú chulainn-is-an-incarnation-of-lug theory is totally whack and based on a scribal error, so here goes. there’s an article that talks about this called the textual tradition of compert con culainn, which is in celtica 21 for anyone who has academic library access, but i’m assuming the majority of you don’t and/or can’t be bothered to go look something up which is valid
anyway for those who aren’t familiar with cu chulainn’s birth story, it’s a little bit weird, because he’s kind of conceived multiple times. there’s a boy whom his mother adopts, but who later dies; while she’s mourning said child she drinks and a small ‘creature’ goes into her mouth, at which point lug comes to her in a dream and says she’ll be giving birth to his son sétanta (and by the way the boy who died was his son too); she’s due to marry súaltaim but she’s already pregnant with this unknown child so she induces a miscarriage, marries súaltaim, and gets pregnant again… and this third child is cú chulainn (well, sétanta, he gets his other name later)
so that’s how he was conceived; the circumstances concerning his birth are also a little complicated and vary according to different stories, as well as being contradicted in places by little references to his childhood in other stories. for example, the táin says that he was raised by his mother and father and then left for emain macha at the age of about five, whereas versions of his birth story have him being immediately fostered by the ulaid, and yet another story has it that he’s nursed by láeg’s parents (láeg being his charioteer) so that they’re raised together from infancy (which is ADORABLE and I LOVE IT)
what does any of this have to do with whether or not he’s an incarnation of lug mac ethlenn? well basically the scribe messed up and confused two lines – one line featuring lug identifying himself to dechtire, and one in which he identifies his son, saying that he’ll be called sétanta, and from this concluded that lug-cú chulainn was an incarnation situation, and wrote a verse accordingly which has confused people ever since
now it’s always dodgy to ‘correct’ medieval texts according to what they think they ‘should’ say, but in this case we can be fairly sure this is what happened because there’s more than one manuscript of the story, so can compare them to see why they’re different, and come up with a working hypothesis about how that came to be
so the problematic version is the one from the book of leinster (LL), whereas we also have the slightly older version from lebor na huidre (LU). a verse in LU therefore says “and he [lug] himself was lug mac ethlenn” and then “and the child would be called sétanta”, or something, which the author of the LL version clearly muddled up and thought it said “and he [the child] himself was lug mac ethlenn”, so inserts a verse after that saying “and lug mac ethlenn was in the form of the child […] he was cú chulainn”
because this idea isn’t in the other versions of the story, we can see that something weird’s going on with LL, and if you’ve ever seen a medieval manuscript you can imagine how easy it would be to confuse two lines while reading and draw the wrong conclusions (hell, i’ve done that with tumblr posts, and those aren’t written in insular miniscule)
essentially, this whole confusion appears to come from what we call ‘scribal eye-skip’, i.e. a scribe was tired while reading the story, got muddled, tried to explain the text based on how they’d read it, and resulted in several hundred years of people trying to argue that cú chulainn is an incarnation of lug
(i mean that may also be down to the whole ‘cut-price jesus’ idea, which is… a whole thing i’m not gonna get into right now, but basically, if you’re trying to find more parallels between cú chulainn and jesus other than the fact that he died aged 33 and also one time slept for three days – possibly in a tomb – to be healed by his divine father, then the idea that he is an incarnation of that divine father is going to help considerably with doing that)
now obviously this is an ‘error’ that’s made in the book of leinster, which was compiled some time in the twelfth century, probably by around 1160, and is our major source for various texts, including one of the two main recensions of the táin. it’s not a new, recent thing; it’s older than some of the other material we’ve got. because of this, we need to ask ourselves whether we can really make a value judgment on how valid this interpretation is. i mean, if everything we know about medieval irish texts comes from these manuscripts and it says this in one of those manuscripts, then even if we can see where they might have got that idea from and think it’s probably a mistake, is it not just as valid as anything else in that manuscript? we wouldn’t argue that something from r2 of the táin is an error just because LL differs there from LU; we just say that it’s a different recension and treat it as such
it’s difficult because it involves lug and whenever anything involves gods it starts becoming A Thing, and since people are intent on extricating pre-christian mythology from medieval texts, they want to know whether or not you can consider cú chulainn an incarnation of lug. and then that in turn has a bearing on how you read lug and, indeed, whether you consider cú chulainn himself to be a god of any variety, so that’s when it starts mattering whether or not the scribe got it ‘right’ … like if you want to take that approach, then you’d probably say that no, this idea doesn’t belong to any pre-christian mythology (NOT THAT WE CAN ACTUALLY RECONSTRUCT THAT), it’s just LL getting confused, so we shouldn’t incorporate it into reconstructions now
(i will not here get into the question of whether or not such reconstructions are a useful way of looking at this material because that’s just. a whole can of worms, both academic and theological.)
honestly, for me as someone who isn’t super engaged with the texts on, like, a mythological and/or religious level and tends just to treat them as literature, it doesn’t really matter to me, but the fact that this whole interpretation hinges on what looks to be a very simple scribal error is part of the reason i don’t buy into it and will never write about cú chulainn as if he’s an incarnation of lug
i hope all of that made sense but if you have any questions lmk and i will attempt to clarify. in the meantime i hope you enjoyed this 1200-word post, personally i’m thinking i need to start an Actual Srs Academic blog (like a wordpress or something) to post this stuff on if i’m gonna spend this much time on it, but there we are
main source for this post if you wanna know more / check that i’m not talking complete rubbish: Ó Concheanainn, Tomás, “The textual tradition of Compert Con Culainn”, Celtica 21 (1990), pp. 441–455

The Builders Sword - J.A. Cipriano
Like!
The legendary builder is a normal guy - or used to be until he bought a sword with all his savings and called upon a demon who brought him to hell to fight the looming darkness. I like the symbolism of Clarent and Excalibur and the idea that Arthur´s sword is Clarent and not Excalibur (the fire /ice and destroy/build metaphoric has appeared before). Once you get used to the idea that the builder´s sword works like a video game gadget ans shows charts of your allies as well as the overly sex-oriented female characters (which are all but Arthur himself), it is a good read. The book got slightly twisted when all female characters in Arthur´s fairy little village begin to throw themselves at him, but the appearance of Dred made up for it.. After all, one has to find a way to express that those other girls are not human (aside from the fact that they have wings), right? It was an interesting read and I would like to continue the series. I read mostly kindle unlimited content at the time, so I am glad this is here :)

Sons of gravity: back to la bicrave
Episode 3.
WE GONNA NEED A BIGGER BOAT.
Adieu “Spirit of Port-Louis”, bienvenu à toi “Stellar Gogote - Gro Falou IV”
“Don’t fly what you can’t afford”

Here's the previous segment of my An Táin Bot commentary, which possibly provides useful context for today's.
Quick explanation of recensions: a recension is a distinct version of a text. They're the same story, but there are enough differences to consider it a new version, not just a different manuscript. There are three recensions of the Táin, but the third is late and fragmentary, so most people focus on the first two. Recension one is found in manuscripts including Lebor na hUidre and the Yellow Book of Lecan. Recension two is primarily found in the Book of Leinster (twelfth century), but there's also a later version of it, fifteenth century, known as the Stowe MS. Stowe is mostly the same as LL but with later spellings and so on; however, in places it diverges sufficiently to be referred to as "Recension 2b", because it's not quite just another manuscript of the LL text.
An Táin Bot tweets a (somewhat old-fashioned) translation of the Táin by Joseph Dunn, published in 1914. To my knowledge, this translation makes no distinction between recensions, and is -- as far as I'm aware -- the only published translation to include the passages that are unique to Stowe. Since the section that diverges most is Comrac Fir Diad (the Encounter with Fer Diad), and since An Táin Bot has been tweeting this section for the past month... there's been a lot to talk about on this front.
Earlier this year I tried to embark on a project translating these unique passages from Stowe, not being aware of Dunn's translation, as I don't know of any scholarly translations solely of that MS. I didn't get very far, but I intend at some point to go back to it.

Recension av Memories of the Future av Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky
Tumblr media
stil from Quadraturin, short film by Laura Hypponen based on Krzhizhanovsky’s short story of the same name, 2018
In the surreal world of Krzhizhanovsky, there exist characters who could be called purveyors of themes; people who can turn any matter into a theme, who sell philosophical systems and supply others with aphorisms. They seldom seem happy, and we don't really know if what they sell is ultimately of any use or if it is simply a madman's ramblings, but they sure are interesting characters. I would say that the author himself is one such purveyor of themes. Memories of the Future is filled to the brim with ideas, many of them entertaining and interesting, and the majority of them are about writing. One can tell that Krzhizhanovsky is very conscious of his craft. This collection of short stories seems to be sort of a playground for him, where he experiments with thoughts about the possession of the literary "I", the circular motion of time, the existence of non-existing characters... All of it spliced with a beautiful sense of humor, the kind that sometimes seem so prevalent in Eastern European literature: “Resignation to one’s fate takes practice. Like any art. Or so citizen Shushashin maintains. He begins every day - after putting on his shoes and washing his face, before throwing on his jacket - with an exercise. Again, the expression is his. This exercise works like this: he walks over to the wall, puts his back up against it and stands there in an attitude of utter resignation. For a minute or two.” - Red Snow, p. 109.

Sigizmund Krzhizhanovsky, 1912
But however good Krzhizhanovsky is at his best, a lot of it is lost in page after page of fragments. Most of the short stories are branching off into even more stories. We get fragments of conversations, details of events, but we are always in the periphery. The author only feeds us these glimmers of things, blurred instants out of a big whole that we feel exists in the background. What to think of this completely depends on personal taste, but I do feel that I'd like something more than just the bare bones. I want to see these interesting ideas slowly grow, connect into each other, get a view of the harmonies and the clashes. As of now, different thoughts succeed each other at such a speed and with such weak relations to each other that they feel scattered and jumbled. I just can't manage to separate all of these concepts long enough for them to unfold... if that makes any sense. Connected to this, the main characters of Memories of the Future, the ones that we get to follow, are nearly always observers; they are not the ones making decisions, causing actions, having ideas. They are constant onlookers, and somehow this causes a sense of alienation from the text. This character becomes yet another intermediator, an invisible wall between reader and ideas. We, like the characters, never really get a fleshed-out account of anything. So many things are happening just outside of our field of vision. Now, since I don’t read Russian (yet), I have no real way of knowing how true Turnbull’s translation is to the original. Still, there is a sort of clunky feeling about the way things unfold. No idea if this is due to translation, if it is just the author's own peculiar way of writing, or if my usual reading pace just doesn't fit the text. Whatever it is, it kept throwing me off track, kind of waking me up from stories that could’ve been dream-like and immersive. Maybe I just have to let go of catching all of these subjects rushing at me. I think that to get the most joy out of this book, the reader should treat it like an, admittedly cluttered, anthology of themes and ideas, rather than cohesive stories. Some of these themes are really brilliant, hell, many of them are. But that’s what Krzhizhanovsky seems to be here: a purveyor of themes. He will supply them, and you will have to figure out what you want to do with them.

I just learned there's a THIRD recension of the Táin, having operated until now under the mistaken belief that there were only two. So now my "recension hell" planning sheet includes the phrase "Recension III also exists?! :O"

Recension hell continues.
I mean, it is pretty interesting seeing how different versions of the Táin complement and contradict each other, but also, I have read like five different translations of it in the last three weeks and that’s … that’s a lot.
